‘Can-DO AC’ Blog to Provide Information and Inspiration In the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s wrath, and as Atlantic City and its neighboring communities rally to pick up the pieces, a new blog called “Can-DO AC” has been created to help document and facilitate a quick and complete recovery. The Atlantic City Alliance (ACA) began posting a variety of photos (like the one above showing the ArTLAnTIC public art installation at the

www.ACPetHotel.com

nying Twitter handle of #CanDoAC, these social-media tools serve the dual role of keeping locals abreast of the recovery while offering resort enthusiasts a venue to express their moral support and inspiration. “We knew we needed a quick and efficient way to communicate visually how Atlantic City is faring in the wake of Hurricane Sandy,” says Liza Cartmell, president of the ACA. “By creating a place for people to actually see the progress, we hope to ease any concerns people may have about the overall recovery period, and also create a space where people can be inspired by the irrepressible spirit of Atlantic City and its citizens.” Visit the blog site at candoac.tumblr.com. All 12 Atlantic City casinos were given clearance by the Governor’s Office to reopen at their own discretion, the last of which did so 10am Monday, Nov. 5. The Governor’s office has also created a Web site and relief fund to help all New Jersey communities rebuild and recover from Sandy. Go to sandynjrelieffund.org for more information, or call the state hotline at 1-800-Jersey-7 to volunteer or donate needed supplies. “Hurricane Sandy has brought unthinkable devastation to parts of our state, destroying homes, businesses and some of New Jersey’s most identifiable icons,” says N.J. First Lady mary Pat Christie, the fund chairperson. “In the aftermath I urge you to support our friends, neighbors and communities impacted by the storm. They need our help and need it quickly. Thank you for your generosity. We are strong and resilient. We are proud New Jerseyans.” — Ray Schweibert

Ocean City Goes Silent Ocean City’s annual Quiet Festival returns this week hoping to provide the community with a fun distraction in the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s aftermath. Slated to start Wednesday, Nov. 7 at noon, the hushed hurrah kicks off with the Annual Yawn Along Ceremony on the lawn of City Hall, featuring performances by the Ocean City Sign Club, the Wind Chimes Band, and the Yawn Along singers. This segment of the festival is dedicated to those downtown merchants who face the daunting task of repairing damage inflicted by Sandy. The celebration of silence continues Friday with a paper airplane making session led by pilot Ken Thorpe at 4pm in the ocean City Library (room 110). The same location hosts an open poetry reading and discussion Friday at 7pm, where guests are invited to read, listen or nap, presented by nAP: The national Association of Tired People. The White Mice, Hamster, and Guinea Pig Challenge will take place Saturday at 10:30am in the Ocean City Community Center Senior room. This quiet pet contest will judge the competitors’ lack of energy, unusual sleeping positions, and general disinterest in its surroundings. Other contests include a Guinea Pig Lettuce eating Contest, and awards for costumes. HALT rescue’s Danielle Clark will lead a discussion on caring for such peaceful pets. Ribbons will be awarded to first place winners, with a special award going to Best in Show, while all participants will receive a certificate for their involvement. New to this year’s Quiet Festival is the Snore at the Shore in which competitors will attempt to create their most realistic imitation of a snore. All events are free, including free pet drawings and pictures with Big Bart, the giant tortoise, and Martin Z. Mollusk, Ocean City’s famous hermit crab. To register your pet or for more information, call 525-9300 or email msoifer@hotmail.com. — CH

HEN LISA MARIE PRESLEY began writing music again after a seven-year layoff, she wasn’t sure where it would lead. “There was no agenda,” Elvis Presley’s only child said. “I was given the freedom and space to find myself again, to start again and get a fresh perspective. I didn’t know what was going to come of it. I was half expecting nothing was going to happen.” Her manager, Simon Fuller, was a little more focused. He was hoping the 44-yearold singer, songwriter and lyricist, who’s enjoyed an eclectic career and moves easily between folk, blues and country, would write enough material to create what would become her third studio album. Without her knowledge, Fuller sent some of the songs to T. Bone Burnett seeking some input from the Grammy Awardwinning producer. Burnett knew his client would be freaked out and become a nervous wreck waiting for Burnett’s assessment of the new material. Burnett liked what he heard so much he summoned Presley to his Los Angeles home and said he wanted to work with her on what would become her third album, Storm & Grace. The album, released in May, has been described as a country-pop “moody masterpiece” that explores the demons and angels in her life. Once she was ready to go into the studio, Burnett’s idea was to pair Presley with a variety of different writers and musicians to help her craft her new sound. Collaborators included songwriter and guitarist Richard Hawley of the band Pulp, Fran Healey from the band Travis and songwriter Ed Harcourt. The writing process sounded fairly simply. Presley said she wasn’t influenced by any outside musical influences. “Honestly, at the time, I was not listening to any music at all,” Presley told Spinner magazine in May. “What happened with these songs was I would sit with the cowriter and we’d lock in on a melody and a format, and then they’d basically leave me in a room five to six hours. Then they come back in and wonder what’s come out of it, out of all that.” All told, Presley and her writers created more than two dozen songs over a two-year period. Then she turned them over to Burnett hoping he could work the same magic on her album that he’s applied to a broad swath of artists ranging from Roy Orbison, Elton John, Tony Bennett and k.d. lang to John Mellencamp, Elvis Costello and

“My music has helped people and I hope that continues.”

Diana Krall. “He has an orbit of musicians that he loves and rearranges them accordingly with what he’s recording,” said Presley, who performs Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Xanadu at Trump Taj Mahal. “I had the utmost respect with everything he wanted to do. He already had his ideas. I wasn’t going to interject mine. I never would have gotten in his way. And they were all so incredible you couldn’t argue.” Growing up in the shadow of her legendary father — and then dealing with the rumors and media scrutiny that’s dogged her ever since his 1977 death — Presley has developed a hard shell that helps her deal with criticism and living life in a public fishbowl. Her own personal life — which includes four marriages, among them to Michael Jackson and actor Nicholas Cage — has only heightened interest in Presley. She admitted that it hasn’t been easy living and dealing with, on a near daily basis, the baggage that comes from being the only child of a legend. “I don’t know anyone that it wouldn’t bother. I don’t know a time when that didn’t happen,” she said candidly. “These days, you’ve got people hiding behind their computers and bullying people. I think that’s gotten really, really bad. It’s a vehicle that people use to hide and attack other people. It’s generally an epidemic right now. Obviously the Internet is also a lovely and wonderful thing overall, but you have to deal with mean comments. You have to have a stronger skin than ever.” Presley, who moved to England several years ago with her husband and in 2008 gave birth to twins, said she’d looking forward to touring behind Storm & Grace. “I like the touring part. I love the immediate gratification from people that want to hear your music,” she said. “It’s a little bit hard to do, hard to put yourself out there. It’s like putting a target on your head and saying, ‘Please shoot! Fire away!’ It’s a free-for-all out there and kind of scary. I understand too that my music has helped people and I hope that continues. I hope that it continues to reach people.” n

Revel’s HQ Nightclub, Atlantic City’s newest club already renowned for bringing in some of the most famed electronic dance music (EDM) talent on the international circuit, is spearheading a humanitarian cause to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy. With a stellar lineup slated for this weekend, Nov. 9-11, the club, in collaboration with associates Angel Management Group, the EMM Group and Revel, will be utilizing the performances from all three nights, and the revenue they generate, as an opportunity to reach out to a local community in dire need. In the wake of Sandy’s devastating blows to Atlantic City and similarly affected shoreline districts, and following the lead of N.J. Gov. Chris Christie and First Lady Mary Pat Christie in their establishment of a nonprofit relief fund to assist New Jersey families impacted by the destructive storm (SandyNJReliefFund. org), HQ Nightclub has developed Revel Nightlife Relief — an effort to support Atlantic City locals and surrounding neighborhoods by donating all weekend ticket and door sales directly to the cause. On Friday, Nov. 9, HQ kicks off with AN21 followed by Bambi on Saturday, Nov. 10, and Afrojack on Sunday, Nov. 11 — the latter of whom is an EDM icon in the midst of his wildly successful “Jacked” tour. Revel Nightlife Relief has already raised $35,000 for the cause, with the hope of achieving or surpassing its goal of $100,000. Tickets start at $20 each for AN21 and Bambi, and $60 for Afrojack, and are available at RevelNightlife.com. Doors open at 10pm each night and are for guests of 21 years and older. Come out for a night (or two, or three) of top-notched nightlife entertainment while simultaneously contributing to a great cause and muchneeded relief. Visit the Revel Nightlife Facebook page (facebook.com/revelnightlife) for more. — Casey Harper

Surviving Sandy

Not heeding pending-storm evacuation orders is never a wise move, but it can afford a better appreciation for what workers are up against when making barrier islands safe for return. By Ray Schweibert

M

ETEOROLOGISTS WILL TEND to hedge bets with talk of percentages when making weatherrelated predictions. Any of them will tell you that forecasting future weather events is never an exact science, as too many variables can change things quickly and dramatically. Most often meteorologists very accurately predict what the weather will do. And when they do not, it’s certainly never deliberate deception like the “boy who cried wolf” tale we were all told as children. Yet it’s sort of suggestive of that tale that many more barrierisland residents opted to stay put and deal with Hurricane Sandy’s wrath rather than go through the same inconveniences as August 2011, when we were told Hurricane Irene would pack a wallop and it fizzled. Obviously Sandy did anything but fizzle and some, myself included, will never brush off a warning to evacuate Brigantine again. A phenomenon that will remain ingrained with me after Sandy has passed was a pair of perceived and distinctly different time distortions. It was reported to be about 36 hours from the huge storm’s arrival to its departure, which seemed more like an eternity, especially when the power went out. Then on Sunday, Nov. 4, around 4pm, I realized a week had passed since Sandy sort of boomeranged into the Atlantic City area after

tracking up the East Coast, as the weather prognosticators predicted it would. It seemed instead like the storm had just been on top of us yesterday. On Tuesday, Oct. 30, I biked around the island to see what Sandy had done. Many residents, particularly those on the north end of Brigantine or closest to the bay or ocean, sustained maximum damage from record-high tides and/or sustained, hurricane-force winds, but every building was affected somehow. President Obama toured Brigantine with New Jersey Gov. Christie after flying into Atlantic City International Airport on Tuesday, pressing the flesh and posing for photos at the community center that served as a shelter for evacuees (many of whom underestimated the storm and had to be rescued from their homes). The governor even obliged a request to snap a shot of Brigantine resident Mary Moyer and her friend Monica with the president. Later, when Obama’s motorcade visited North Point Marina (one of the hardest-hit sites on the island), a photo of the president consoling North Point owner Donna Vanzant sort of epitomized the island’s plight and wound up on the White House’s Web site (whitehouse.gov), battered boats and scattered debris serving as a backdrop. Sandy tossed aside this boat and demolished her dock. renovated oceanfront establishment at the base of an historic Brigantine hotel, suffered extensive damage and will likely be months before reopening. Another casualty of Sandy, located less than a mile from North Point, was the Rod ‘n’ Reel Tavern, which sustained extensive structural damage. The nearly 80-year-old

island mainstay took on about two feet of water and may be deemed too unsound to repair. “It looks like there’s no amount of cleaning and minor repairs that’s going to get anything done,” owner Tom Devine said in a USA Today report. “It’s suffered a few storms, but this may be the one that’s the end.”

I remember Harry McGarrigel, now 83 and a co-founder of the Brigantine Elks Lodge in 1970 (and a retired 45-year member of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol) once telling me that plenty of public policy affecting Brigantine was made in the Rod ‘n’ Reel, where local politicos used to sit down, talk things over, and make decisions over a handshake and a cold beer. A frustrating fact about evacuating the island after Irene last year was wondering why, so long after the storm had passed, residents were told to continue to stay away. The reason became evident after Sandy had passed and the island was suddenly a beehive of workers clearing washed-up debris, downed trees, branches and power lines (some still live), cops patrolling streets to curtail looting (some are that unscrupulous, apparently), and doing whatever it took to make the island safe again as quickly as possible. It was a massive and quite impressive task to watch unfold. To allow an influx of hundreds of cars back onto a barrier island in the middle of all that would have created untold chaos, so patience is a virtue in such cases. And most importantly, when a mandatory evacuation order emanates from the Governor’s

Office, it’s for good reason — primarily not putting residents’ or rescue workers’ lives in jeopardy. “Given my typical subtlety and understatement, if something looks stupid to do, it is stupid,” Christie said in a poststorm TV interview from North Point Marina. “Staying on barrier islands for 36 hours of hurricane-force winds of 75 miles-per-hour or more — sustained, not gusting — is stupid … Because [Hurricane] Irene did less to the barrier islands, folks are saying to themselves, ‘See, he was wrong the last time.’ [But] I turn out to be right and you turn out to be dead, that’s not a great equation. So for all of you here, and I met a bunch of you today in Brigantine, who disregarded my admonition to get the hell out of here, you’re forgiven this time — but not for much longer.” A relief fund and Web site has been established by the Governor’s Office to help New Jersey families impacted by the devastation of the storm. and Lithrini (sautÊed red snapper file with fresh fennel, onions and peppers over rice pilaf). Finally for dessert, it would be hard to pass up their signature cakes and pastries. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner and features BYOB accommodations. A children’s menu is also available. Be sure to stop by and explore the authentic Greek cuisine at Athenian Garden, which is certain to please everyone’s palette. — Christina Migioia

Nick and Roula Psounos have consistently prepared quality cuisine at Athenian Garden in Galloway, a family-owned and operated Greek restaurant serving traditional home-style recipes in a cozy atmosphere. Athenian Garden offers an eclectic Greek menu that changes seasonally and contains detailed descriptions of each delicious dish. Amongst the changing menu, the owners note that broiled fish dishes are popular in spring and summer, while many classical dishes made with lamb, pork, chicken and pasta are year-round favorites. For dinner, famous appetizers include Taramosalata (made from cured codfish roe), Spanakotiropita (spinach and Feta cheese baked in filo dough), and Melitzanosalata (a purĂŠe of onion, garlic, and olive oil). Two must-try entrees on the menu are Mausaka (ground lamb and beef with potatoes and eggplant)

Sandy Spares Memories By Jerry Blavat

O

NCE AGAIN, GREETINGS AND salutations. Hopefully, after the terrible impact of Sandy on the Jersey shore, everyone is readjusting and rebuilding. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes something as traumatic as this to bring people together, with neighbors and strangers lending a helping hand during and after the storm. It shows what Americans are capable of and what we’re truly about. Now let’s get to your questions. Even with all the photos and news reports, it’s difficult for us here on the West Coast to fully grasp the intensity of the damage and the trauma Hurricane Sandy has generated for so many in NJ and NY. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who were impacted in any way. With you on the air and at your club dates, it will help uplift the spirits of all of your fans everywhere. There are very few that are blessed with ability to do that in both good times and bad. I don’t [know] what happened to Memories in Margate during Hurricane Sandy, but I hope it will be up and running when Memorial Day rolls around. —

The Andantes

ists in the ’60s, including the Partridge Family, the Monkees, Henry Mancini, and Burt Bacharach. My favorites, of course, were the Andantes. You never realized when you listened to the Four Tops, the Supremes, the Marvelettes, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Martha & the Vandellas, and on and on, that they were the background voices behind those artists. Hard to believe that just three ladies contributed so much to the hit sound that came out DJ Harry Duncan, Roots & Rhythm Series at of Motown. Amoeba Music, San Francisco

To all of you who have been concerned, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You know the magic and the impact Memories has had for people from all over the world for the last 40 years. Apparently the man upstairs has felt that magic, and for some strange reason we had no wind damage and a minimal amount of flooding. Perhaps being on higher ground helped keep us intact, and we are one of the few in that area that were spared.

Are you going to have a Turkey Trot this year, and where? Someone asked me about it. Hugs — Nanci from South Philly

Yep. As you know, we created the annual Turkey Trot more than 50 years ago when we did it for my dear friend Father Cox at Bishop Neumann. It is always the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and this year we’ll do it at Chickie’s & Pete’s (in South Philadelphia) right after my live broadcast in Philly. And the next day you can watch the Geator in the Thanksgiving Day Parade with a salute to Who do you consider the least appreciated Dick Clark. n background singer groups of the rock and roll era, the Andantes or the Ron Hicklin Singers? Both groups are featured on some of the most J ERRY B LAVAT memorable songs of the 1960s and ’70s but very few people have heard of either group. Got a question for Jerry? Borgata’s Culinary Royalty: (L to R) Schulson, Flay, Puck, Mina, Kalt and Zakarian

“As soon as Labor Day passes, we start thinking about Savor Borgata.” during what has to be an incredibly busy schedule, to take a few minutes and give Atlantic City Weekly an insider’s view of the event. Chef Mardigian explains that, “As soon as Labor Day passes, we start thinking about Savor Borgata. The executives start planning and I contact Wolfgang, asking him what his thoughts are; he asks what my thoughts are, and we come together with a plan.” Mardigian adds that the aftermath of Sandy hasn’t changed his plans for the event (“So far, so good, keeping my fingers crossed”), although he had a tree come down and knock over his fence at home. “It’s not worth mentioning compared to some of the people I work with and friends and seeing the television reports.” As for cooking specifics, Mardigian says, “We have these beautiful New York strip steaks. What Wolfgang loves about these events is being able to interact with the audience. It’s an extensive line wait-

ing, but when they get there Wolfgang wants them to be wowed. We are always cooking, so people can smell it and they can see and when they finally get to Wolfgang I love to witness it. The looks on people’s faces when they get to meet him and taste the food; it is a great experience for them. He will be there the entire time and slice steak for every guest in line.” Puck will also be serving up freshly made ricotta gnocchi, a staple at his Borgata restaurant since it opened. “We’ll be making that with a tomato basil garlic sauce.” Showing how to make the gnocchi will also be the primary presentation at the “In the Kitchen with Wolfgang Puck” event in the Music Box at 3pm. “We’ll talk about meat and steak and grilling and marinades and then show them how to make gnocchi. People are pretty intimidated about making gnocchi, but when they see with their own eyes, they say, ‘I can do that!’” n

Saturday, Nov. 10 • Live with Bobby Flay ($35), at 1pm, Borgata Music Box. Flay shares tips and techniques while cooking his favorites. • Whiskey Sips & Sliders at Long Bar ($29), at 1pm at the Long Bar. Jack Daniel’s brand ambassador, Ana Kornegay, leads guests through pairings with a variety of sliders that showcase Jack’s barbeque recipes. • Mad About Meatballs ($39), at 2pm, at the kitchen of Fornelletto Cucina & Wine Bar with Chef Stephen Kalt. • Sweet Surrender, ($39) at 2pm, Event Center, with Chef Thaddeus DuBois, who oversees the pastry production for both the Borgata and Water Club hotels. A lesson on how to perfect the pastry world’s hottest new trend: cake pops. • Tequila & Tacos at Gypsy Bar ($29), at 2pm, invites guests to join a Espolón Tequila Master Distiller explore the ingredients behind this 100 percent Blue Agave premium tequila, accompanied by four tempting tacos. • In the Kitchen with Wolfgang Puck ($35) at 3pm at the Music Box. Puck will share the tips and techniques while making favorite recipes. • Wine Seminar ($39) at 3pm, Water Club. Oenophiles can take their taste buds on a journey through Francis Ford Coppola’s winery with its director of winemaking and GM, Corey Beck. — LH

Savor Borgata Cooking Demonstrations

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • NOVEMBER 8 - 14, 2012

N THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE Sandy, there is a strong desire to get back to normal. Luckily for area foodies, Sandy did not derail the exceptional dining event at Borgata known as “Savor Borgata — An Evening with Borgata’s Culinary Masters,” scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the acclaimed culinary conclave of the property’s top chefs. Inside the Borgata Event Center, each restaurant will be represented with its own culinary station, offering guests the exclusive opportunity to interact with Bobby Flay (Bobby Flay Steak), Stephen Kalt (Fornelletto Cucina & Wine Bar), Michael Mina (SeaBlue), Michael Schulson (Izakaya, A Modern Japanese Pub), Wolfgang Puck (Wolfgang Puck American Grille), Geoffrey Zakarian (The Water Club), restaurateurs Greg and Marc Sherry (Old Homestead Steak House), and Borgata’s executive pastry Chef, Thaddeus DuBois, while sampling each chef’s unique approach to the culinary arts. The event, hosted by Billy Harris, will offer a variety of wine, beer, and spirits from across the globe. In the days leading up to Savor Borgata, the casino is featuring the second year of its Borgata Restaurant Week, with $39 and $49 three-course prix-fixe menus now through Friday at Borgata’s restaurants. New this year is various cooking demonstrations on Friday and Saturday with the superstar chefs, including “Live with Bobby Flay” and “In the Kitchen With Wolfgang Puck.” (See a complete listing of events elsewhere on this page.) “We are so excited to be celebrating the fifth year of Savor Borgata,” says Joe Lupo, senior VP of operations for Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. “Since its inception, Borgata has been committed to providing the market with innovative dining experiences and Savor Borgata is a great example of that commitment. It’s a rare opportunity to mix and mingle with some of the world’s most celebrated chefs, and even more so to do it all in one night. “This year, we’re thrilled to expand Savor into a complete program of events that includes interactive cooking demos, tastings, and specially priced restaurant menus all week leading up to the main event.” Aram Mardigian, executive chef of Borgata’s Wolfgang Puck American Grille since July 2007, was gracious enough

Shatner Beyond ‘Star Trek’

Multi-faceted entertainer and big-time star of the small and big screens, William Shatner brings his one-man show to the Concert Venue at Harrah’s Saturday, Nov. 10. By Ed Condran

“I’m still going strong and I will continue to do so since it is my world.”

NOVEMBER 8 - 14, 2012 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

W

ILLIAM SHATNER COULD REST on his laurels and just live the life of an octogenarian cowboy. The iconic star of Star Trek, who adores horses, as much as Trekkies love conventions, has done it all. Shatner, 81, will always be known as Captain Kirk. The eloquent Canadian is a smallscreen hero courtesy of Star Trek, but he has also starred in T.J. Hooker, Boston Legal and most recently brokered deals for the commercial Web site Priceline as “The Negotiator.” What else could Shatner do in his twilight years? How about a one-man show? Shatner is on the road with his aptly titled production Shatner’s World: We Just Live In It, which is slated for Saturday, Nov. 10, at Harrah’s Concert Venue. Shatner was between projects when he received a call that sparked the show. “I was contacted by someone in Australia,” Shatner tells Atlantic City Weekly in a phone call from his Los

Angeles home. “They said they would like me to do a one-man show. I went down and worked on the visuals. It went over very well. It worked out so well that we got an offer to do the same thing in Canada. I worked on improving the show we did up there, and then we got an offer from Broadway and we did it and had even more fun.” So Shatner is taking the show around the country. “It’s great to take it everywhere,” Shatner says. “With this show you’ll have drama, music and comedy. It’s a show unlike anything you’ve seen before. It’s my life. It’s about things that have happened to me. I just try to make it as entertaining as possible. You’ll be surprised how moved you are by this show. You’ll also have great big belly laughs.” Shatner looks back proudly at his accomplishments. “I’ve done so many things over my career,” Shatner says. “I’ve had great roles in television. I’ve enjoyed the theatrical

productions I’ve done. I’ve enjoyed the music I’ve done. It’s been a very eclectic career.” His interpretations of “Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds” and “Mr. Tambourine Man” are offbeat and unique. Some folks, such as Howard Stern and other humorists, have had fun at Shatner’s expense. Singer-songwriter Ben Folds produced and co-wrote a number of tunes with him, enjoying the experience. “I had a great time working with him,” Folds says. “William Shatner is unlike anyone else out there.” Shatner isn’t taking his last lap around the track anytime soon. “I still want to work,” he says. “If I’m presented with a really great project, I would like to be on board with something like that. I’m still going strong and I will continue to do so since it is my world.” Star Trek is a big part of his fans’ world, but Shatner has never watched an episode of the classic television show.

‘Shatner’s World: We Just Live in It’

Where: The Concert Venue, Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City When: Saturday, Nov. 10, 9pm Tickets: $75 and $105 “It’s true that I don’t watch Star Trek,” Shatner says. “But it’s not just Star Trek — I rarely see anything that I’m in. But I will reveal that I saw Star Trek the movie [2009] at home and I thought ‘what a great ride.’ I watched a little bit of that. But it reminds me of what [Star Trek costar] Leonard Nimoy says, which is that ‘you know you’re old when you go back in time and you’re still old.’ That’s our story.” Shatner avoids his shows and most television programs, but he enjoys watching NFL football, particularly if his favorite player, Peyton Manning, is featured. “I love watching Peyton Manning, but it’s really my wife who is obsessed,” Shatner says. “She’s from Illinois and the Indianapolis Colts were always her team and Peyton Manning was part of the Colts for all of those years. But now that he is with the Broncos, she and I watch as many of their games as possible. I’ve been watching him week after week this season and he’s just as incredible now with Denver as he was with the Colts. It’s so compelling every time he goes out and plays. He’s the greatest to ever play that position. He’s had four operations on his neck. He’s phenomenal.” Would Shatner ever do a commercial with Manning, who may be the finest athlete-pitchman of this modern era (and possibly ever)? “If I had that opportunity, sure, I would do it,” Shatner says. “Let me know if you can set it up.” Football isn’t Shatner’s only passion. The native Canuck is a hockey fan, and he’s not pleased about the strike. “I hope the season isn’t lost,” he says. “I enjoy hockey very much. I come from Montreal but I live in Los Angeles. How weird is it to say that I live in the land of the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings? There is no sport like hockey. One of the highlights of my life was being at the last Winter Olympics [2010] in Vancouver and watching that overtime goal when Canada beat the U.S. It was incredible.” It was amazing — but was it on the level of Shatner’s one-man show? “That’s apples and oranges,” he says. n
