his fall, all Atlantic Cape Community College campuses are participating in a fall food and clothing drive that students, faculty and members of the community are invited and encouraged to support. The Student Government Association is collecting nonperishable food items for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s Southern Branch through Nov. 22. Collection boxes are placed at all three campus locations. Each separate campus is collecting specific items for the drives — Atlantic City: nonperishable canned food items for the Community Harvesters Church Food Pantry through Nov. 14; Cape May County: gently used coats, gloves, hats and scarves for the school’s Student Services’ “Warming One Person at a Time” goal. Collection boxes will be available there until Dec. 11. The Mays Landing campus and its Culinary Student Association is collecting jars of peanut butter and jelly through Nov. 31. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s Southern Branch and The Campus Kitchen at Atlantic City will benefit from all donations. The Nursing Club is also collecting coats and jackets for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission through Nov. 19. All donations are happily accepted.

The Head and the Heart

‘Let’s Be Still’ (Sub Pop)

O

ver the past five years, The Head and the Heart has been making a significant buzz in the Northwest, where the band has been based since relocating from the Northeast. Following its self-titled, self-issued debut album — eventually re-released by Sub Pop in 2010 — the band became one of the hottest acts in Seattle. With its second effort on Sub Pop, Let’s Be Still, the five-piece ensemble offers more of its trademark harmonies, earthy folk-pop and catchy, intelligent little ditties. Obvious influences for the band include Animal Collective; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Beach Boys, Arcade Fire; Fleet Foxes, David Gray, Dr. Dog and new folkpop players ala the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons, etc. The 13 tracks of mainly breezy, folk-rock grow on you with each listen. Highlights include the madefor-TV-commercial title track, “Homecoming Heroes,” — a perfect lead-off track — the country-tinged “My Friends” (think Jayhawks) and “Josh McBride,” which references Bob Dylan’s 1963 cut “Boots of Spanish Leather.” — Jeff Schwachter

T

he town of Hammonton (Atlantic County, about 35 minutes away from A.C.) is charming at this time of year and through the holiday season. With a plethora of restaurants and shops, the downtown area beckons for a brisk walk, a stop in a local coffee shop and a show at the historic Eagle Theatre ( 208 Vine St., theeagletheatre.com), which, since the early 1900s, has served as a silent movie house and playhouse, a church and a storage area before being re-opened in 2009. Since then, the non-profit theatre has put on a diverse slate of plays, including its current run of the timeless musical Little Shop of Horrors. A superb cast tells the ancient story of “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side,” with a Skid Row flower shop as the backdrop. Inside the shop, a supernatural plant — dubbed “Audrey II” after the love interest of the young, apprecntice florist, Seymour, grows (on human blood) and grows until things get out of hand. Wether or not you’ve seen the movie and/or the award-winning musicial, this Eagle Theatre production is a treat — captivating with its actors, set design and songs. The show continues in Hammonton’s Arts District Nov. 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 (8pm) and Nov. 17 (3pm). The theatre’s Web site has information about its December production as well as the 2014 season.

Noyes Indie Film Series By Kaitlin Montague

T

his year, the Noyes Museum of Art of The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey celebrates its 30th year. Fred and Ethel Noyes founded the museum in Oceanville (Galloway Twp.) in 1983 to collect, preserve and exhibit American fine and folk art, with an emphasis on local New Jersey artists and folk art forms. During the museum’s expansion period over the past few years, other satellite locations have opened to the public in Hammonton and Atlantic City. All three locations will screen films as part of the Noyes Independent Film Series on Saturday, Nov. 16 (7-9:30pm). The series will feature exciting short film works by talented up-and-coming filmmakers. Imaginative, funny, personal and abstract, these short films have never been showcased to the public and will mark their debuts at the one-day, multi-venue festival. Tickets are $5 for Noyes members, $7 for non-members and $4 for Stockton students and seniors. Visit noyesmuseum.org or call 652-8848 for more information. see more online @

Thor’s Dark Side

It’s hammer time once again with a new villain tying to destroy the universe By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

A

lthough I didn’t like the original Thor movie, I became a bigger fan of the character and Chris Hemsworth thanks to the delightful superhero team adventure The Avengers. Superhero movies certainly earn more gravitas when they go for a darker element and Thor: The Dark World puts its bid for displaying a more serious side right in the title. The story begins with a preview of the newest villain. The Dark Elves were vanquished

thousands of years earlier when the soldiers of Asgard, including Thor’s grandfather, were able to steal the weapon known as the Aether and hide it. Flashing forward to modern London, Thor’s (Hemsworth) scientific main squeeze, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) has found an anomaly that is similar to the portal that brought Thor to earth and later unleashed his brother Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) army of darkness/ world domination bid in The Avengers.

When Jane finds the Aether at the other end of the wormhole, she is soon in the middle of another battle for control of earth and the nine realms as the Dark Elves leader Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) is brought back from suspended animation to lead his army to earth. Our poor planet can’t catch a break. Malekith’s ambience and visual look is very much like the revenge-minded Romulans from Star Trek: Nemesis. One element of the new movie that gives it more energy and sparkle is the renewed sibling rivalry of Thor and Loki who must now team up to stop the Dark Elves. Hiddleston proved to be a dynamic villain in The Avengers and that star power explodes again when Loki changes into the anti-hero Thor must reluctantly join forces with in this quest. Thor: The Dark World has all the CGI action sequences one expects in a superhero movie, and if you have been watching the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. you will recognize the geek/nerd comedy asides provided by Foster’s lab buddies Darcy (Kat Dennings) and Ian (Jonathan Howard) as very similar to the geek scientists on the TV series. Why Stellan Skarsgard, introduced as Dr. Erik Selvig in The Avengers movie, is also treated as a comedy aside, even though he has figured out how to stop the Aether, makes less sense. The Marvel universe is shameless in plugging its other movies so they manage to bring Captain America onboard for a brief cameo.

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

Name: RESORTS, ATLANTIC CITY (00RESS); Width: 60p0; Depth: 5.38 in; Color: Black plus three

You get extra points if you spot Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Borg Queen (Alice Krige) as an Asgard healer, and Chuck’s Zachary Levi all covered in makeup as Thor’s buddy Fandral. Rene Russo also provides a supporting turn as Queen Friga and another Thor regular back for the sequel is Idris Elba as the all-seeing Heimdall. Directed by Alan Taylor, whose primary work as been on the small screen (Game of Thrones) does an adequate job blending the mythological side with the science fiction element. Thor remains a lesser star in the Marvel universe, but Hemsworth has been allowed to shed his arrogance and be a more engaging and complex figure this go-round. His love-hate relationship with Loki adds a layer of believability to the performance. Portman, who was insultingly pegged as merely “the girlfriend” in the previous Thor adventure, is more integrated into the story this time making it a role more worthy of the Oscar-winning actress. And as noted earlier, Hiddleston’s Loki is the wild card who energizes the action. Hammer time is more enjoyable in The Dark World. n

at Benatar was only looking for a guitarist — not a boyfriend — when Neil “Spyder” Giraldo walked through the door of a recording studio in 1979 and fired a musical arrow through the singer’s heart. Describing the 23-year-old musician as “the most drop-dead gorgeous man I had ever seen in my life,” Benatar told herself she’d just met the father of her children. But the singer, who was basically an unknown and still several years away from becoming a rock goddess, didn’t share her feelings with Giraldo, for a couple of good reasons. For starters, Benatar was married to but separated from an Army solider — Dennis Benatar — whom she’d married when she was just 19. And, just to complicate things, Giraldo was in a relationship with Exorcist actress Linda Blair. But love has a habit of finding its own way, obstacles be damned. Benatar, who turned 60 this year, and Giraldo, who’s 57, kept their feelings for one another at bay while they toured and cut Benatar’s debut album, 1979’s Heat of the Night, which went platinum. Finally, Giraldo asked Benatar to have a drink with him and told her he believed Blair had cheated on him. That was all the singer needed to hear. “This is a done deal,” she wrote in her autobiography, Between a Heart and a Rock Place. “You. Are. Mine.,” she remembered. Benatar divorced her husband, she and Giraldo officially became a couple in addition to musical colleagues and the two were married in 1982. Giraldo’s produced each of her albums, written a ton of songs, arranged them and been his wife’s musical muse. In a business where marriages between entertainers are often measured in weeks, Benatar and Giraldo have stayed the course for nearly 32 years. “I feel about him now the way I felt about him the very first moment I saw him, and I am so grateful for that,” she told Parade magazine earlier this year. “We’re nuts about each other. It’s kind of an incestuous relationship. There isn’t any part of our lives that isn’t intertwined, so even when there’s a conflict, you just have to resolve it.” Giraldo said the partnership he formed with his wife transcended their romantic relation-

ship and began virtually from the moment they met and began working together. “We were just two missing pieces that found each other,” he said. Benatar’s route into the world of rock ‘n roll was a circuitous one. She started out as a classically trained coloratura and also studied acting. After one year of college, she had plans to continue her musical training at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. Instead, she dropped out of school at 19 to get married, but said she knew it was a mistake when she was walking down the aisle. “I knew the day we wed that I was making a terrible mistake,” she wrote. She was working as a bank teller to make ends meet, but quit her day job after attending a Liza Minnelli concert. She took a job as a singing waitress at a retro nightclub known as The Roaring Twenties and sang on the side in a lounge band known as Coxon’s Army. Although her biggest hits in the 1980s were hard-driving songs like “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong” and “Invincible,” her biggest break in the music business was in 1975 during an amateur night at Catch a Rising Star in New York, where she sang a very un-rocklike song: “Rock-a-bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody.” The club’s owner, Rick Newman, became her manager and she became a Catch regular for three years. She also landed a part in singer-songwriter Harry Chapin’s futuristic rock musical The Zinger, a show that featured two more up-and-coming stars, Beverly D’Angelo and Christine Lahti. Although she had a huge voice, Benatar realized her classical background was hampering her ability to transition into the rock world. “I was 22 by the time I started to sing rock, so at first I was very conscious of technique and I was overly technical,” she said. “That proved to be inhibiting so it was a disadvantage until I began to sing intuitively. That’s the only way to sing rock — from your gut level feelings. It’s the instinct that the best singers have.” When they play a live gig, as they’ll do in Atlantic City Saturday night (Nov. 16) in Revel Casino’s Ovation Hall, they get equal billing. They’re so inexorably intertwined neither has their own Web site; they share one: benatargiraldo.com. n

nce again, greetings and salutations. Back from sea with the Malt Shop Memories cruise, and if you were with us for any of the last three, this had to be one of the best. Folks who were with us from previous ones were back, along with new members of the family. It was not only the artists but the audience from all over the world all coming together to re-live the golden age of rock and roll. Stay tuned for info about next year or go to maltshopcruise. com online. And it’s going to be a great weekend in A.C. when my pal Frankie Valli returns to the Borgata this Friday and Saturday night. Frankie represents the last of the true class and style of show business. Look for the Jersey Boys movie, which just wrapped, directed by Clint Eastwood, to be out for the New Year. Now, let’s ask the Geator.

I have a question about a movie that was in production in the Philadelphia area in the late ’60s. It was being shot in an abandoned quarry in the Swarthmore area (made to look like Mount Rushmore). You were starring in it? A group of us neighborhood kids were hanging around and watching as they were trying to film it. Just wondering what it was called and if anything was done with the footage. Thanks! — Debbie, California

Bill and I just returned from the Malt Shop Memories Cruise, where he, Jay Siegel, and Jay Traynor (the original Jay of the Americans), brought the house down as Jay Siegel’s Tokens. Bill and his brother Jack were dear friends of mine — as a matter of fact, I did Bill’s wedding way before he joined the group. Bill was well known since the early ’60s, when he sang background on “Pretty Little Angel Eyes” and “Who Put the Bomp.” Jack, who passed away several years ago, was the older of the brothers by two minutes.

That was the movie Cycad, starring Gary Merrill and Ina Balin, along with yours truly playing a drifter (the billing was “and introducing Jerry Blavat”). It also featured a guest appearance by Sammy Davis Jr. One of the problems was that it was shot at a time when X-rated movies were the rage, along with the blaxploitation movies, and the producers could not get a distributor. To my knowledge there is no surviving footage, but perhaps one day it will surface.

And here’s a trivia question. The Tokens were the first vocal group to produce a million-selling record for another vocal group. What was the record? Answer at the end of the column.

Just watched ’60s girls and girl groups on PBS. Fabulous! Where was Maureen Gray? “Gee Whiz” by Carla Thomas was there, but not Maureen Gray. She was your sound, Geator! — Rich Ferrier, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

You have been playing a song called “If,” two versions, one by Perry Como. The other one is Timi Yuro and I would like to find out who does the spectacular piano accompaniment. — Joe D., Williamstown That is the late, great Bobby Scott, who was a composer (“A Taste of Honey” and “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”), producer, arranger and conductor who worked very closely with Dick Haymes, Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones and Bobby Darin. I also play a version of “If” by Roy Hamilton.

Just the best deal in AC!

Bobby Scott

As great a talent as Maureen Gray was, and as great as her songs “Today’s the Day,” “Crazy Over You” and “Dancing the Strand” were, they were not national but local hits. Maureen was a big local star, but unfortunately the PBS shows only feature artists who had recognition on the national charts. Last I heard, Maureen was living in England. Answer to trivia: “He’s So Fine” by the Chiffons. n

Voting will conclude on Dec. 31, 2013, with thousands of entries again expected. The 2014 awards show celebration bash is guaranteed to be a night full of fun and surprises. This year’s celebration will involve an afterparty, new guest celebrities and a variety of surprises throughout the night. “Coming off of last year’s big fifth anniversary of the Nightlife Awards, we are very excited about the 2014 awards and the big bash at Boogie Nights,” says Atlantic City Weekly editor Jeff Schwachter. “This project was created to celebrate and bring together those who work so diligently — behind the scenes in many cases — in the Atlantic City region’s rich and diverse nightlife industry. The awards celebrate the men and women who help make Atlantic City the unique, high-energy entertainment destination that it is. “That the project has grown and evolved over the years speaks to how much of a positive thing the Nightlife Awards has become for the Atlantic City region and its image. We are very proud to present these awards each year and thank all of our readers who have voted.” n

here exists an adage about winemaking that dictates that one cannot learn the business, but instead must be born into it. We like to think that axiom also applies nicely to the restaurant industry, where many of the most successful operators we’ve encountered were second or even thirdgeneration scions. Corey Kurica, of Galloway Township’s new Corey’s Seafood Corner restaurant, certainly meets those criteria of heritage. His parents met working in a restaurant called Ye Cottage Inn in Keyport. The Kurica family went on to own and run the very popular Bayberry Inn in the Ship Bottom section of Long Beach Island for 33 years until Sandy’s arrival in late 2012. Like many restaurateurs, Corey’s training began at the very bottom. He explains “Forty-five years ago I started out as a pot washer, the second year I got promoted to dishwasher.” That was at another LBI establishment, called The Sea Shell, in Beach Haven. In a classic twist of restaurant destiny, one fateful night, kitchen staffers walked out and ownership turned to him and late brother, Carlton, to take over cooking duties. Though both still teens, the pair overachieved enough to be granted kitchen management positions for the next several summer seasons. A decade later, The Bayberry was purchased and became a family-run concern. One of few establishments open yearround on LBI, it quickly became a locals’ favorite kind of place. But after Sandy’s rampage through Ocean County last year, The Bayberry never reopened and was eventually sold.

A sample of the apps at Corey’s

“We didn’t open just for the season, we are year-round.” This presented Corey and wife Nancy, a respiratory therapist by profession, a unique opportunity. After purchasing a house in Absecon, Corey became fascinated by a miniature little roadside eatery fronting the Ten Acres Motel on Route 9 in Galloway. It was a cool-looking anachronism, possessing the old-time roadhouse look and feel of another distant era in time. Open only limited hours for breakfast and lunch, they approached ownership with the idea of completely making the business over. Closing the transaction June 1, the pair spent the next three months thoroughly rehabbing. Gone was the antiquated lunch counter,

instead replaced by a classy BYOB dining room with seating for about 30 patrons. Intimate and charming, the room is now filled with nautical décor, including a rear wall featuring antique replicas of threemasted schooners, salvaged from the former Bayberry prior to sale. Virtually everything in the kitchen is similarly new, including a sexy convection oven that would be the envy of many larger operations. Corey did most of the construction work himself over the course of this past summer and officially opened Sept. 5. While many were skeptical about the post-Labor Day debut, Nancy allows that “I’d rather have a strong local base. We didn’t open just for the season, we are year-

round.” The response thus far from customers, many of whom were returning after not visiting for many years, has been enthusiastic. Corey says, “A lot of people that come in can’t even believe it’s the same place.” As good fortune would have it, they soon reconnected with a former Bayberry staffer, Jim Avery, who has since become sous chef and right-hand-man. (Worth noting: with Corey standing 6’6’ and Avery 6’8’ they constitute the tallest pair of chefs working together we know.) Items recommended by the Kurica’s include apps of lightly-floured fried calamari, Corey’s seafood chowder — crab, shrimp, scallops and lobster — in a Manhattan-style red broth and bacon-wrapped Hawaiian scallops — sourced from Cape May — garnished by water chestnuts and pineapple with a sesame-teriyaki glaze. Entrees offer the expected array of seafood — lobster francaise, jumbo lump crab cakes, shrimp and scallop scampi and Asian grilled salmon among them — plus plenty of options. Most notable among those are a filet mignon and chicken breast combo atop tomato risotto with Madeira wine demiglace and loin lamb chops, three four-ounce center-cut chops. The best part of Corey’s, however, just might be the value. Only one starter — a jumbo lump crab Cobb salad — is priced at more than 10 dollars. Half of nearly 20 main courses are less than 20 bucks, inclusive of house salad, Caesar salad or cole slaw, bread and choice of potato or linguine. For a glimpse of what defines a family restaurant, look no further than Corey’s Seafood. ■

EVENT INFO

Revel’s Battle Royal

Fast becoming a fan-favorite MMA site, Revel is hosting what Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney is calling one of his organization’s most electrifying fight cards ever. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com able fighters who ever competed in MMA. “It’s a different way of looking at it. Boxing has created this false sense that every fighter to be taken seriously has to be 32-0, but fans don’t look at an MMA fighter like Quinton with a 32-11 record and think anything about him other than he’s one of the greatest that the sport has ever seen. Great competitors lose, it’s part of the realty of sports competition and it’s what makes it so compelling. Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos sometimes lose, but their fans never lose faith that they can come back and win the AFC Championship. If everybody won all the time, sports competition would not be as exciting.” The reason losses may come with a bit more frequency to top MMA talent, compared to boxing, is that there are many different ways MMA fights can come to a quick end. “That’s what attracted me to MMA 20-some years ago — it’s just the consummate fighting sport,” says Rebney. “To do it you have to be able to wrestle at an elite national level, your Jujutsu submission-fighting game, your judo throws and ability to take your opponent off his feet at close quarters, your punching ability, your ability to execute kicks and block kicks coming from every conceivable angle — all have to be at a world-class level. To compete at the highest level of this game you’ve literally got to be like a chess player where all the pieces are moving at once. That’s what makes this sport so incredible. “One of the things that substantially differentiates MMA from boxing is that in boxing there is no honor in quitting,” says Rebney. “If you ask a thousand boxing fans what was the biggest moment of disgrace ever in boxing history, most people would point to Roberto Duran’s ‘No Mas’ [where Duran, still on anyone’s list of greatest boxers in history, quit in the ring against Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980 and took a long time to live that down].

“In MMA there’s no dishonor in a tap-out [submission] loss, no disrespect in it, it’s literally just a fighter saying ‘Hey, I’m going to live to fight another day, I’ve taken enough damage and I feel like it’s time to stop. And [MMA] referees approach their oversight of fights in very much the same way. If a fighter is not adequately able to defend himself, they’re instructed and taught to stop the bout immediately, whether that’s in a submission move on the ground, or strikes, or any numbers of mechanisms to stop the fight. In MMA there’s no dishonor in staying ‘I’ve had enough and I’m going to figure out how to be a better fighter and a better combatant, and when I come back next time will hopefully not have to tap out. “It’s part of the game and it protects the fighter to a much larger degree than perhaps a sport where you just literally fight until you’re knocked out.” ■ Wilcox Looks to Cap Impressive Run with Win in Atlantic City Many mixed-martial-arts careers were born out of backgrounds in collegiate wrestling, where the competitive juices continued to flow once scholastic sports end. And while every MMA fighter has a unique story to tell about how he came to compete in the sport, Justin Wilcox’s is particularly compelling. A standout high school wrestler from Cincinnati, Wilcox got recruited to compete for Division-1 Pa. college powerhouse Edinboro. He qualified for the NCAA tournament as a freshman — a rare feat — but a subsequent, serious injury cut his collegiate career short. He then gravitated to bodybuilding, packing about 200 pounds of muscle mass onto a 5-foot-6 frame, before being steered toward MMA when he saw Josh Koscheck, a former NCAA champion and teammate from Edinboro, while watch-

ing an episode of the MMA reality series The Ultimate Fighter. Having started in MMA at the relatively advanced age of 26, Wilcox, now 34, has compiled a solid 13-5-1 record in different divisions, now fighting as a featherweight (145-pound limit). On Friday at Revel he’ll face formidable Patricio “Pitbull” Freire, another fighter hungry for a Bellator title who sports a 20-2 record. The winner gets $100,000 and the right to face Bellator featherweight champ Daniel Straus down the road. Atlantic City Weekly spoke with Wilcox by phone, one week prior to his first visit to the resort town. How confident are you coming into your bout with Pitbull? I took this tournament on seven days notice and find myself in the finals, so now the goal is to continue to fight hard and put on a good show for the fans. I’m excited to be taking on a good fighter like Pitbull. I think this is his third time in the finals. He’s certainly a worthy opponent, so I’m not taking him too lightly at all. What will the key be to beating him? He’s a heavy-handed fighter with good knockout power, so I’m going to have to be wary of that. But in MMA you have to be able to beat your opponent in every area, so I’m just going to have to be prepared for anything he throws at me. You always revert back to what got you there. I’m always trying to sharpen all my skills but with 18 years of wrestling, that’s certainly what I’m going to be relying on most. Do you feel comfortable at 145? I put on a lot of muscle mass [while body building] and in my first MMA fight [as an amateur] I fought at 185. Then my first pro fight I was at 170 [the welterweight division] and the majority of my career has been at 155 [lightweight]. Now I’ve shed some muscle mass, which in this sport is more of a hindrance than a help to you. It takes so much more oxygen to feed all that muscle mass and you’re endurance and mobility suffers. I’m feeling much better now, and I think the 145-pound weight class really suits me. I was up near 170 when I took my first fight in the tournament on short notice. Now, in my third fight [and roughly two months after the first tournament fight], my body’s really settled down at this weight. It’s the best I’ve felt in the tournament right now. My body’s leveled out, and it realizes it’s going to be staying at this weight for a while. You’re 34 now, how much longer do you want to fight as a pro? I don’t look too far down the road. I take each fight as it comes and as long as I feel like I’m in shape and prepared, physically and mentally. I mean, do I want to fight into my 40s? People don’t realize how taxing this is on someone’s body, and it involves spending a lot of time away from my family. I’m really close with my wife and I have a sixyear-old daughter — all that adds up to a lot

of sacrifice that all fighters make, not just me. People not in this game only get to see

the end results, all the glory and appearances on TV. They don’t see all the sweat, blood, tears going on behind the scenes.

Friday, Nov. 15, 6pm Revel, Atlantic City How Much: $55 to $275.

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • NOVEMBER 14 - 20, 2013

ome of fiercest fighters on the mixedmartial-arts circuit have had bouts at Revel since the casino-hotel’s inception, making Ovation Hall a Mecca for MMA fans and one of the fastest-growing hotbeds for MMA events anywhere. That trend continues Friday, Nov. 15, with Bellator 108 — four feature bouts and eight preliminaries starting 6pm. The California-based Bellator MMA is one of the sport’s most successful operations, due largely to tournament-formatted fight cards that make every bout it promotes potential steppingstones toward a title shot. “What it does is put relevancy in every fight and makes every fight matter,” says Bjorn Rebney, who created Bellator (Latin for “warrior”) in 2008. “The sequencing we do on television creates a real timeliness to every single bout going on. There’s an immediacy and a relevance to it that you really don’t find in other combatsport arenas. They make fights for the sake of selling tickets and putting eyeballs on TV, but there’s no real objectivity to it. We’ve created a relevancy that fans seem to embrace.” At the top of Friday’s fight card will be the Bellator debut of former UFC lightheavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (32-11) squaring off against Joey “The Mexicutioner” Beltran (14-9-1). The Bellator Heavyweight World Championship will also be on the line between champion Alexander Volkov (19-3) and unbeaten Vitaly Minakov (12-0). Minakov earned the right to face Volkov by winning a series of preliminary bouts leading up to a Bellator heavyweight tournament final July 31 against Ryan Martinez, who succumbed by third-round TKO. Revel will serve as a tournament final for Bellator’s featherweight (145-pound limit) division, where Patricio “Pitbull” Freire (20-2) will meet Justin Wilcox (13-5-1, see sidebar). The winner will earn the right to face reigning Bellator World Featherweight Champion Daniel Straus (22-4) at a later date, and will also take home $100,000 in prize money in A.C. “There’s a lot on the line in that fight and it’s a really, really packed card — one of the best we’ve ever done,” says Rebney. “It’ll be a ton of fun and ticket sales have been going through the roof, so obviously fans are getting excited about it too.” Much of what MMA fans find so appealing about their sport is that while winning certainly furthers a fighter’s hopes of claiming a coveted belt, losses do not impact title shots in the same way they can in boxing. Lose to an opponent you are favored to beat in boxing and it can be a long way back to a title shot. Lose in MMA and the bump in the road is less detrimental. “That’s how MMA is philosophically different from boxing,” says Rebney. “Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson is a perfect example. He’s one of the MMA’s biggest stars and he’s got 32 wins and 11 losses. If you looked at a comparable fighter in boxing with a 32-11 record? He’d be a journeyman opponent. But look at Jackson, look at [former three-time UFC heavyweight champion] Randy Couture, whose record is similar to Quinton’s in terms of double-digit losses, and they’re considered among the greatest, most popular, most honor-

Drinkin’ Whiskey ‘n’ Rye Atlantic City will be the first in Golden Nugget’s family of properties to launch what is designed to be an annual, multi-faceted Whiskey Festival Nov. 15-16. By Ray Schweibert

ot only will Atlantic City be the forerunner in the Golden Nugget family of properties to host what is intended as an annual Whiskey Festival, it will also be breaking new ground in a much more farreaching sphere this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, at the Grand Ballroom. “I’m being told by all these distillers, suppliers and distributors that we’re the first company of our nature to ever give this a try in the New Jersey area,” says Scott Tarwater, corporate director of wine and special events for Landry’s Restaurants (Golden Nugget’s parent company). “There are other whiskey fests — there’s a gigantic one in New York City [each late October] — but for somebody of our size and our nature, we’re being told that we’re the first to ever give this much of an ambitious shot to this kind of festival, and I think we’ll do terrific with it.”

The inaugural festival features a Grand Tasting Experience Friday from 7-11pm and Saturday 3-8pm hosted by “Masters of Whiskey” Kevin Loser, Sean O’Rourke, Cheetah Fletcher and Peter O’Connor. Guests can partake in 10 different samplings of artisan whiskies, barrel-aged barley beers and turn-of-the-century American fare. “What somewhat astonished me, especially for a first-year event, is how many owners and founders are physically, personally going to be in attendance on behalf of their own brand,” says Tarwater. “Wes Henderson, the COO of Louisville Distilling, will be there both days to showcase his company, which produces Angel’s Envy, a hugely rated bourbon, and they’ve also come out with a rye whiskey. “Andrew Auwerda, president of Philadelphia Distilling, and James Higgins, their head distiller, will be there with a really cool lineup

they call Shine, short for moonshine. They also do a salted caramel whiskey using a very old technique that dates back to the Revolutionary War era, as well as a tea-induced whiskey and a white whiskey. You’re starting to see a handful of whiskey distillers bringing back some old-style recipes that really resonated back then. “Another really cool one, and a whiskey that not a lot of people have seen out there yet but is making major headway in terms of star power and rating, is called Clyde May’s. We have one of the founder’s relatives, Kenny Mays, to represent his family’s whiskey. He is called their heritage ambassador and he’s one of my featured guest speakers for one of the educational seminars that we’re doing.” In contrast to the popular craft beer and wine festivals Golden Nugget has hosted, where patrons sample wares from station to station, the whiskey festival is structured differently. Since whiskey is a more potent spirit, the samplings are staggered among a series of nine seminars that will teach event attendees some fascinating facts about whiskey and its entrenchment in American society. “The thing that fascinated me while doing my research and investigation is that whiskey is just an absolutely massive part of the fabric of the United States and [the nation’s] growing stages, in particular just prior to the Revolutionary War,” says Tarwater. “The first big, big hurdle that George Washington faced as president was the Whiskey Rebellion, and his effort to tax whiskey in the Philadelphia, Delaware, New Jersey area as a way to pay for the cost of the war that had already past and had been won. The tax thing did not go over very well at all.” The regions that later became Kentucky and Tennessee, which were still not yet states immediately following the Revolutionary War, were, and still remain, the premier regions for manufacturing whiskey. “There are just a ton of terrific stories in the background, and certainly integral parts of the fabric of the nation and its growth and heritage, and all of the pieces of the puzzle that go with it.” Tarwater explains that, until recently, home-distilling whiskey (a.k.a. bootlegging) was illegal, unlike home-brewing beer or mak-

EVENT INFO ing wine for personal consumption. Now, though, nearly every state allows distilling spirits for home use. The festival will have “pot still” demonstrations and a company on hand that manufactures and sells the pot stills in which spirits are distilled. “Now that’s it’s been legalized in nearly every single state — and this did not used to be the case — you can actually make small batches of your own distilled product, be it whiskey, gin, vodka or whatever, at home, if indeed it is for home consumption. And what we’ll have is a company that has come up with an entire lineup of personal-use pot stills. So I will have on display a 2.5-gallon pot still up to a 25-gallon, all available for sale at the show and featuring demos on how it works and how to fire one up. This is about the coolest thing that I’ve been able to secure.” Tarwater believes that the immensely popular craft-beer industry has been a driving force in helping to revive a similar trend in artisan spirits. “I think part of the driving force is the craft beer industry. That’s doing so extraordinarily well that it’s helped motivate and push some of these smaller distilleries to come online — companies that are start-ups from scratch and have not been in the industry before, and others that have roots back to pre-Prohibition, Civil War days. Some of these are just being revived. They’ve been around, the equipment has been around, the knowledge of the recipes has been around, and now somebody has either bought the rights to all that or has somehow managed to get their hands on them. You’re seeing properties that are coming back from the past, that somehow just lost their way once Prohibition hit and they didn’t stand a chance, and now they’re making some terrific comebacks.” ■ see more online @

No Stopping Valli

Jersey boy Frankie Valli, who turns 80 in 2014, performs two intimate shows at the Borgata Nov. 15 & 16. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

NOVEMBER 14 - 20, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

I

t’s difficult to believe, but Frankie Valli will turn 80 next year. There has always been something inherently youthful about Valli, who had so much success with the Four Seasons during the 1960s and ’70s. Perhaps it has something to do with the myriad of hits that sound as if they were meant for the eternally young. Such smashes as “Rag Doll,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Working My Way Back to You” smack of innocence and of a simpler time. “I don’t think there is anything like those songs,” Valli says. “They are timeless and wonderful.” Maybe it has to do with Valli’s inescapable charm. He looks and acts like a man who is a generation younger than he is. “I’ve always enjoyed what I do,” Valli tells Atlantic City Weekly. “It’s been an amazing ride.” Valli has been singing professionally since 1951. The Jersey Boy was a natural thanks to his off-the-charts falsetto, which is among the most powerful in rock/pop history. “It was something I was blessed with, but I’ve taken care of it over the years,” Valli says. “A lot of people don’t take care of themselves, but if you’re going to sing into your 70s, at least sing well, you have to take care of yourself.” Valli certainly will have a lot to sing when he comes to Atlantic City for two shows (Nov. 15 & 16) at the Borgata. “There have been so many hits and for that I’m grateful,” Valli says. The numbers are mind-bending. Valli and the Four Seasons rolled up 29 Top 40 Hits.

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

“I think people from all over New Jersey go to Atlantic City when I come to town and they are always so enthusiastic. It’s very gratifying performing there.” Valli had an additional 10 tunes, which hit the Top 40, as a solo artist. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll” and “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” each reached the top of the charts. Valli went No. 1 with “My Eyes Adored You” and “Grease” as a solo artist. “It’s amazing when you look at it,” Valli says. “We just connected and the audience stayed with us. They supported us. Without them, there would have been no hits. I love singing these songs.” The songs will be with us forever thanks to radio and the unstoppable force, which is Jersey Boys. The Broadway smash opened in 2005 and remains exceedingly popular. A film version, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Vincent Piazza (of Boardwalk Empire fame) and Christopher Walken is due out in 2014. “Jersey Boys simply has a life of its own,” Valli says. “It’s fun to sit back and watch it do its thing.” The musical focuses on the formation,

success and breakup of the Four Seasons. Jersey Boys won four Tony Awards, including hardware for Best Musical. Hit after Four Seasons hit is part of the production. “I can’t believe how people just jumped on Jersey Boys,” Valli says. “I guess I can believe it. People love the music. They love the story. It’s unlike anything else. It’s about us.” The title of the play comes from the origin of each of the Four Seasons. “We’re all Jersey boys,” Valli says. “That’s something that’s undeniable. Jersey helps shape you. There’s no doubt about that.” Valli was born in Newark as Francesco Castelluccio. “It didn’t take me long to realize what I wanted to do,” Valli says. “I saw Frank Sinatra perform when I was just a kid and that was it for me. I saw him in New York and that’s what I wanted to do.” Valli has enjoyed an incredible career that will keep going on, even as an octogenarian. “What else would I do,” Valli asks. “If the fans still come out and want to see me and I

can still sing, why not continue singing?” The diminutive performer still possesses a terrific set of pipes. “I do the best I can to take care of myself,” Valli says. “You have to do that if you’re about longevity. That’s what I’m about. I want to do this for a long time. How can I just sit by and rest? What would I do?” Valli deserves props for being part of The Sopranos. He was very convincing as mobster Rusty Millio, in what is arguably the greatest show in HBO history. “It was great to act in something that was as great as The Sopranos,” Valli says. “It was fun learning and executing with such great talent. It was a wonderful opportunity. It was great being part of a show that people will talk about forever.” The same can be said for the songs of the Four Seasons, which will be around in perpetuity. “I’ve just been so fortunate,” Valli says. “There’s no doubt that I put the work in but it’s been a wonderful life I’ve had in the world of entertainment.” But it still continues for Valli, who has plenty of drive and energy. “I’m not stopping anytime soon,” Valli says. “That includes playing in New Jersey. I know New Jersey well. That was what I knew when I was a kid and I’ve played so many places in New Jersey, including Atlantic City for so many years. It’s always good to go back to Atlantic City. I think people from all over New Jersey go to Atlantic City when I come to town and they are always so enthusiastic. It’s very gratifying performing there. They love their Jersey Boys there.” ■ see more online @

Playing in the Band

After more than a decade, South Jersey’s favorite ‘jam band’ the Pedestrians record debut album; hold record release party Nov. 15 in Somers Point. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

A

the band over the years. And with so many of the area’s local-music clubs shuttered, razed or transformed into other commercial ventures, that’s quite an honor. With the new album, the Pedestrians, who maintian a strict weekly rehearsal schedule, come full circle in a sense, according to bass player and vocalist Mike Coyne of Egg Harbor Township. “We focused on the originals really heavy for years and we tried two attempts at making a record,” he says. “Then [we] turned into a four-piece band, and there was a big void in our set list when we played live. So we started playing Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan — and it attracted more customers to the bars.” Most of those bars are now gone though, adds Coyne. “South Jersey is full of great musicians, but there is a huge void of places to play. There was Bubba Mac’s and other places like Schooner’s [both in Somers Point]. It’s rough now, though. You get sucked into playing at the casinos and everything is so structured and it’s

not about your band anymore. It’s tough. Sometimes I think that if we were located somewhere else, the Pedestrians would be making a little more cash. “I feel like Atlantic City has potential for original music and more live venues. I went to all three Phish shows [recently at Boardwalk Hall]. It was awesome. I didn’t see anything go wrong. We played before the Phish show [at Harry’s Oyster Bar at Bally’s] and we had huge crowds. Why not do more stuff like this year-round? Atlantic City should embrace the creative people here. I saw potential for great things while Phish was here. If you keep the legacy of the Atlantic City music scene going we’d have a great thing. If I had the resources to open a rock club, I would.” While the group of musicians — all from the South Jersey / Greater Philadelphia region — bring a funky, jam-heavy sound to the stage, there are traces of New Orleans funk, Little Feat, Neil Young, and even a dose of prog-rock in the Peds’ overall sound, which, on a good night — “as long as the stage is big enough,” says Coyne — features two guitarists (Matt

“These are [mainly] songs we’ve been playing for years and we put them together on an album. It’s controlled improvisation. The band is improvising a lot, but there’s always an end point and beginning point.”

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • NOVEMBER 14 - 20, 2013

legion of loyal Pedestrians fans (Ped Heads) has been waiting for this moment for a long, long time. Following nearly 13 years of performing regularly in the South Jersey area — with a few line-up changes over those years and a point when the band even dissolved for a spell — the area’s most popular “jam band” has finally completed its first album. All original tunes. And it sounds amazing. Unlike the majority of the set lists the (usually) seven-piece rock band performs at its shows — populated primarily with crowd-pleasing classic rock material from the Grateful Dead and Dylan to the Stones, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd and Warren Zevon — the 12-track album, self-titled, contains all original music. Songs such as “Place,” “Long Way Down” and “Jealous of Mary” show the band’s obvious influence and fondness for the Grateful Dead, while tunes such as “Down the Avenue” and “Full Throttle Heater” illustrate the band’s ability to conjure up Little Feat funk and vintage Americana grooves ala the Band. “Crazy,” featuring a gorgeous sax solo by guest Al Webber, is one of the album’s strongest tracks, while the set’s closer, a sort of tribute to the “outside of town” location where the album was recorded, called simply “Farmhouse,” is a genuine Pedestrians cut, pulling together all of the strengths within the band while offering journal-esque verses about the long road the members of the Pedestrians have walked to come to this proud moment in the band’s history. The Pedestrians, a band that has been around since October 2001, will hold an album release party on Friday, Nov. 15, at Caroline’s by the Bay in Somers Point (9pm). The venue, where the Peds perform twice a month, has served as a sort of home base for

Biglan, Lowell Todd ), two keyboardists (Chip Miraglia, Mark DeVaul), two drummers (Joe Furhmeister, Al Olivero) and Coyne on bass. Sometimes guests join the band on stage. Doubling up on the instruments, says Coyne, allows for a much bigger sound — both live and on record. “That’s not something you tend to see at a bar because it’s loud,” says Coyne. “When we play at Charlie’s we only use one [drummer]. One of them will take the night off. Or, they’ll switch. We have a rehearsal space that’s big enough for three drum sets if we wanted, and we practice every week. A huge part of the practice is those guys. You have to change your drumming when you’re playing with another drummer. That changes everybody else’s playing too. When we were a four-piece I really had to change my playing, but it was fun. I got to play a little bit more. It’s really more fun when you have more players and I play less. The whole sound is different. There’s a huge wall of sound.” While the band has its regular monthly gigs at Charlie’s and Caroline’s (both in Somers Point), it has recently been doing some weddings for friends and played a couple shows at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. Coyne adds that having a larger band with players who have been at it together for years, also allows for a sense of security and even a level of pure ecstasy on stage. “It’s like a [net] behind you,” says Coyne. “It’s the greatest feeling.” Sessions for the Pedestrians’ first proper album began in the spring of 2012 and continued on and off until earlier this fall. Recorded, produced and mixed at the Farmhouse in Ocean View, Cape May County, by DeVaul, the band’s newest member, the album also features guest musicians from the South Jersey area. Each of the band members contributed to the writing of the album’s songs. “We were going for familiarity of songs with our friends and fans,” says Coyne. “Songs that we’ve been playing that they’d know. It was like a ‘greatest hits’ almost. These are [mainly] songs we’ve been playing for years and we put them together on an album. It’s controlled improvisation. The band is improvising a lot, but there’s always an end point and beginning point. “We spent a lot of time on vocal harmonies, which is probably what I’m most excited about [on the album],” adds Coyne. “We sat there with Matt on the piano. He was showing us harmonies. We had this awesome Beach Boys sound.” Coyne adds that most of the album was recorded live, with few retakes and overdubs. “We all played together at once — just like we do on stage.” Following Friday’s album release party, Coyne says the Peds have a few immediate goals, including putting together a small tour of the Northeast, getting into some festivals and possibly even recording a follow-up album. “We have enough original tunes that we can record another album right now,” says Coyne. ■
