WMGM Set to Rock Fifth Annual ‘Operation Help’ South Jersey’s premier rock station 103.7 WMGM Rocks will be kicking off the fifth annual Operation Help campaign — hosted by Morning Edge show personalities JoJo Borsello and Scotty Reilly — Saturday through Wednesday, Nov. 17-21, from Chickie’s & Pete’s in EHT. This year’s event will span roughly 120 hours of live broadcasts and is set to be the most critical and significant Operation Help to date, benefiting the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and its 260 partner agencies that have been working diligently to assist victims of Superstorm Sandy right here in southern New Jersey. As in years past, JoJo and Scotty will “camp out for a cause” in an RV motor home outside Chickie’s & Pete’s, urging listeners, local business owners and community members to stop by their makeshift home with food and monetary donations, which will be accepted 24 hours a day. Last year’s donation-drives raised over $8,000 in cash donations, as well as 2,654 pounds of food benefiting the FoodBank. Due to the devastation of Sandy, there are now more people in need of donations and support than ever before. “This is the most crucial Operation Help event we’ve hosted todate, because for many New Jerseyans everyday life has changed dramatically in the wake of Sandy,” says WMGM vice president of broadcast operations Paul Kelly. “Now more than ever, south Jersey residents are in need of basics like food and water, as well as financial assistance to get back on their feet. With the holiday season right around the corner, we could not be more proud to serve our community in partnership with our friends at the FoodBank to offer help and support to those in need and help make their holidays a little brighter.” — Christina Migioia

Trail of Two Cities to Run (and Walk) The 17th annual Trail of Two Cities Run & Walk between Ocean City and Somers Point has been pushed ahead two weeks to Saturday, Nov. 17, due to Hurricane Sandy. Beginning at the Ocean City Transportation Center at 9th Street and Haven Avenue, participants will run or walk the course that now follows the recently completed $400 million causeway connecting the two cities, ending at John F. Kennedy Park in Somers Point. The competition consists of residents from both neighboring cities, and the race’s goal is and has always been to bring the two towns together — a feat made easier with the new bridge. With its 11-foot-wide shoulders, 10-foot-wide walkway, a fishing dock, and an information center, the new structure allows pedestrians and cyclists to safely commute between Ocean City and Somers Point. Proceeds from the event will raise funds for the Somers Point Foundation for Education and Ocean City Children’s Programs. Registration is still open. It is $30 per person and participants can register online at lmsports.com, or at 7am on the day of the race at the Ocean City Transportation Center. The race run from roughly 8-9:30am, during which the

‘Diva Bingo’ to Bolster Support of RNS Mobile Mammography Fund The Ladies Invitational Bluefish Tournament (LIBT) committee will present “Diva Bingo” on Friday, Nov. 16, in support of the organization’s mission to fight breast cancer and raise money for the AtlantiCare RNS Mobile Mammography Assistance Fund. The Mobile Mammography Assistance Fund helps provide mammograms and potentially life-saving screenings to uninsured women at no charge. Hosted by the cast of Divas Do AC in Resorts Superstar Theater, the event encourages guests to dress in their best Pretty In Pink outfits. The most outrageous outfits will win prizes. Registration is from 7-8pm and the event starts 8pm in the Superstar Theater. A $10 donation benefits the RNS Mobile Mammography Assistance Fund, and bingo prizes will be awarded in slot cash, so be sure to sign up for a Resorts players card at the promotions booth if you don’t already have one. “The Divas are absolutely hilarious, and we hope to fill the showroom for a great cause,” says Barbara Gates, LIBT committee member. “Their version of Bingo is like no other.” The 29th annual LIBT is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2013. A non-profit organization, the LIBT has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for RNS since its foundation in 1984. — Ray Schweibert

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros

Re-Issues (HellCat/Epitaph)

Late Clash leader Joe Strummer would have turned 60 this past summer and the HellCat label has remastered and re-issued the three stellar albums he made between 1999 and his 2002 death with the Mescaleros: Rock Art and the X-Ray Style, Global A Go-Go and Streetcore (one of the best albums ever!). The new versions come with rare b-sides, bonus tracks, including previously unreleased live versions of songs such as “The Harder They Come” and “Pressure Drop,” as well as new liner notes penned by Jim Jarmusch and Bill Flanagan specifically for the re-issues. Joe Strummer died too soon, but his final three albums sound even better now and have aged with grace. — Jeff Schwachter

as a good bartender certainly hinges on the ability to memorize the ingredients to a wide variety of drinks, but ask the average patron on the other side of the taps what matters most and you’ll realize there’s much more to it than that. They gave most of my life,” says the 2003 my mom and brother a room Atlantic City High School grad. I was there the regulars were given rooms for a while and I guess they at discounted rates while they thought I was doing a good job, sorted everything out, while so one day they asked me ‘Hey, at the same time many other how about if we throw you places were price gouging like behind the bar?’ I thought sure, crazy. owner with her husband Jack (and manager of the 40-room inn above the pub, personally primped by the French-born Jeannine) if there were any employment openings. “My boyfriend and I actually had our first couple of dates here,” says Rivero of the pub, located about two blocks in from the beach and near the Tropicana. “I love this place, so I came over and asked if they had any openings. I’m thinking maybe a waitress job, something to get my foot in the door, because there’s no way they’re going to hire me to bartend right away. But the owner asked if I know how to bartend and I said yes. She said I can give you a couple of shifts and just threw me in, telling me ‘I’m sure you’ll do fine.’” Apparently Rivero did, as

input and advice, as the Chelsea Pub bartenders — and probably all bartenders everywhere — are often asked to morph into amateur psychologist mode. “One of my regulars, a local guy I’ve known for about 10 years, came in late at night this past weekend all upset,” she says. “He said ‘Gia, you wouldn’t believe what just happened to me 10 minutes ago. My girlfriend and I just split up. Is your Doctor Is In sign up?’ I told him it sure is, let me get you a beer and you can tell me all about it. The guy was all upset and he left here marginally better and not so crazed. I think I got him partially calmed down. Hey, if you can’t trust your bartender, who can you trust?” Another local named Larry regularly gives Rivero weather reports, knowing she is fretful of thunderstorms. Then there’s a couple of couples who regularly show up — who Rivera fixed up. “I introduced two bar regulars of mine, and they’re on their second child,” she says. “There’s another couple that had been coming here for years who got married and then came in the same night of their wedding, and have been coming in ever since.” Coming across unfamiliar drink orders is not an uncommon occurrence among bartenders, says Rivero, but a good mixologist should always be able to work through it. “Some places might have different names for drinks, or call them something different from what you know them as, so you just ask what’s in it or how to make it,” says Rivero. “A lot of times I’ll hear ‘Just make me something good,’ and I’ll ask them ‘Well, what do you like, vodka, rum, gin? What kinds of flavors do you like?’ And I’ll just throw something together. Usually they’ll like it, and then they’ll ask me what it’s called. I’ll ask them what their name is and when they tell me their name, I’ll tell them ‘That’s what it’s called.’” n

HE MOMENT MIKE EPPS realized his comedy tour would bring him to hurricane-battered Atlantic City, he promptly decided to donate a portion of his ticket sales to the storm relief effort. Then he did the next logical thing: He began working on some Sandy-esque material. “I like to think people would be willing to help [me] out if something bad happened,” Epps says, beautifully leading the punch line. “Like, if I was late on my child support, maybe they’d do a relief thing for me.” Ba-dum bump. (Where’s a real rim shot and a cymbal crash when you need one?) But seriously, folks, Epps feels it’s important that he do whatever he can to lessen the impact Hurricane Sandy had on many of his fans throughout the region. He isn’t pretending that handing over some of his income this weekend is going to solve all storm-related problems. “I don’t feel like I can help everybody, but to give back some of the proceeds, I think it’ll help a few people,” he tells Atlantic City Weekly. “Give people encouragement, make people laugh. If I can make people laugh in a situation like this, and give back a little something, I feel like I did my part.” Be forewarned, however. Epps will probably crack a few storm-related jokes during his two shows Saturday, Nov. 17, at the House of Blues at Showboat. At the end of the day, Mike Epps is still a comedian, and he’s got a job to do, damn it, and that’s to make people laugh. Especially some of his fans who likely suffered losses during the storm and who will likely at his shows. “I think cracking jokes about pimps with flashlights, prostitutes with rain coats, that’s always funny,” he says, chuckling at the line he makes up on the spot during a phone call late last week. Don’t get the mistaken impression that Epps is insensitive to the plight of storm victims. He knows many people are facing a major crisis in their lives, and he’s sensitive to that. “I think I’m going to approach it like I’m a part of this, too,” says Epps, who’ll turn 42 the day after his House of Blues gig. “I’m speaking from a victim’s viewpoint. I’m going to be there as one of y’all.” Now that most people who were victims of the storm are all cried out, Epps believes those same people are on the cusp of exploding — with laugher. “That’s an audience waiting to laugh, that’s

1 10 0

Like us:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

an audience wanting to get some things off their minds,” he says. “That’s an audience that’s coming out to have a good time. I think that’s just how God works sometimes. He gives certain people certain challenges, and they really come in handy in certain situations. This situation right here is really going to come in handy for me, because nothing is a better cure, nothing is a better medicine, than laughter.” After performing stand-up comedy in high school and then honing his technique in comedy clubs, Epps caught his first break on Def Comedy Jam in 1995. Then came the role of Day-Day Jones in the movies Next Friday and Friday After Next and the part of Black Doug in The Hangover series of comedies. But Epps is careful not to become stereotyped as just another comedy actor. Earlier this year, he appeared opposite Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston — in her final film role — in a remake of the movie Sparkle. It was a dramatic turn for Epps, whose character was a stand-up comic by day and an abusive and evil drug lord by night. “That’s always been my thing, to not let them typecast me,” he explains. “I can be funny [and] I can be serious when I want to. I’m an actor; I’m a comedian and an actor.” But, first and foremost, Epps is a comedian. “I love to laugh, and I love to make people laugh,” he says. “Normal people make me laugh. But I don’t laugh at nobody who’s trying to be funny.” n

Resorts’ new project is going forward off the Boardwalk post-Hurricane Sandy. By Lori Hoffman

Hurricane Sandy would have an impact as to whether there was enough beach left at Resorts for the Margaritaville project to get underway, the good news for Atlantic City (and Parrotheads, of course) is that the project is still on track. Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville project at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City began construction on Wednesday, Nov. 14, on the beachfront. The Massett Building Company is beginning the project with the foundation for the LandShark Bar and Grill. “We are thrilled to get the Margaritaville project underway,” said Gary Van Hettinga, the new president and C.E.O. of Resorts Casino Hotel following a partnership deal with Connecticutbased Mohegan Gaming Advisors, who will have a minority ownership in the property. “Seeing the first signs of work occurring on the beach in front of Resorts is an exciting first step. The LandShark Bar and Grill will be the first of its kind in Atlantic City and this landmark moment will be one of many in an aggressive

Fold them into the cranberry puree with a wooden spatula. • Brush four souffle dishes generously with butter, then coat with granulated sugar. • Turn over to remove excess sugar. Spoon souffle batter into sugared dishes. • Bake at 325 for 25 minutes, serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Add first layer of zucchini topping with mozzarella, parmigiano and sauce, repeating with eggplant. • Alternate layers until all are used, top with sauce and parmigiano. • Bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes.

Broner vs. DeMarco at Boardwalk Hall

Big Bouts: Bright young star Adrien Broner takes on Antonio DeMarco; plus Seth Mitchell fights Johnathon Banks in Atlantic City By Rob Scott PHOTO BY HOGANPHOTOS/GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS

A

Antonio DeMarco (left) and Adrien Broner TKO over the tough Vincente Escobedo back in July and DeMarco made quick and explosive work of equally tough John Molina Jr. this past August. With Broner’s career being in its proverbial infant stage, it’s easy to see why anyone who has followed the sport of boxing can think that the bravado shown by the young star may be equivalent to writing checks that he just may not be able to cash. When the fight was announced, DeMarco was quoted as saying, “Broner talks a big game but he’s never been in the ring with a hungry Mexican fighter like me. I wanted this fight from the moment it was offered to me because I know I’ll be the first person to beat Broner and put him in his place. When I put my hands on him, he’ll regret his decision to move up to my division.” Broner, with his ever-present confidence,

stated, “I’m not coming just to win this fight, I’m coming to knock DeMarco out. This fight is speed versus power and it’s going to be just another day in the ring for me. Going up in weight is going to be different and I know he can hit, but you can’t hit what you can’t see and I’m too fast and furious for him.” Also in the co-feature, heavyweights take the stage as rising talent Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell, 25-0-1 (19 KOs), from Brandywine, Md., defends his NABO heavyweight championship against Johnathon Banks from Detroit, Mich., 28-1-1 (18 KOs), in a scheduled 12-round bout. Mitchell, a former Michigan State linebacker, is coming off of an exciting knockout of Philadelphia native Chazz Witherspoon this past April at Boardwalk Hall on the Bernard Hopkins versus Chad Dawson undercard. Since that win, more whispers of Mitchell

being the next U.S. heavyweight star are being spoken, with the volume surely being raised up a significant notch if he were to score an impressive win ove Banks. It’s a fact that Mitchell doesn’t ignore. “Every fight from here out is a really big fight for me,” he says. “I truly believe that, in the latter part of 2013, I will be ready for my opportunity to fight for the heavyweight world title.” Banks, a student of the late, great Emmanuel Steward since start of his career in 2004, also served as an assistant to Steward up until his untimely death less than a month ago. Since then, Banks has pulled double duties, officially replacing Steward as head trainer for world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in his latest successful title defense, and also continuing his own preparation for his battle with Mitchell. Banks’ only loss was to Tomasz Adamek back in 2009 when he campaigned at cruiserweight. All in all, it’s a matchup of two heavyweights that should determine a world title shot, whoever should emerge victorious. Past and present, Atlantic City has always been a place for the best in boxing — on Saturday, Nov. 17, come see the future. (Promoter Golden Boy will be donating $2 per ticket and $1,000 per knockout to the Atlantic City Boys & Girls Club. De La Hoya and Caesars will match the donations.) n

TLANTIC CITY HAS BECOME synonymous with big fights. It also has a long history that will forever be linked with some of the very best fighters as they’ve made their ascensions to the top of the sport. On Saturday, Nov. 17, that tradition continues when Boardwalk Hall plays host to whom many boxing pundits are labeling as a definite fixture in the sport’s future landscape, when former WBO super featherweight champion, Adrien “The Problem” Broner, 24-0 (20 knockouts), steps up in weight and class, and challenges the very eager and equally capable Antonio DeMarco, 28-2-1 (21 KOs), for his WBC lightweight championship. Broner, while promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, has been a self promoter in a sense, because what can GB Promotions say about the talented Cincinnati, Ohio, native that he hasn’t already said about himself? Applied to the Muhammad Ali and Floyd Mayweather schools of though, Broner has indeed shown himself to be at the top of his class both in action and self promotion. With combination of speed, power and extreme bravado, the boxing world has definitely taken notice of this 23-year-old personality, as thus far he has talked the talk and walked the walk. His walk has led him into the direction of hard-hitting DeMarco, who hails from Los Mochis Sinaloa, Mexico. Following in that old true Mexican spirit of welcoming challenges, DeMarco jumped at this opportunity after Broner issued the challenge on HBO after his last win. Both are coming off of exciting televised wins — with Broner registering a fifth-round

By Ed Condran You said from the stage that if Barack Obama were re-elected, you would leave for Canada. Have you started packing yet? A lot of that was stage fodder. You’re talking about the Singapore incident. I was just there marveling how beautiful Singapore is and I started thinking about how our nation is changing and I don’t know if we can handle all of the taxation. I know years ago that in England the taxes got so out of control that people left and I can see it happening here. There could be a mass exodus here. There are quite a few musicians who are blessed enough to be making $250,000 or more a year and they will be taxed. I think what will happen is that bands will be dying left and right. What’s happening now is that everything America has been built on will be destroyed.

“We’re a strong nation, no matter who is in the White House. God is in my White House.”

We just have to get there. But green army vehicles driving through Los Murphy and Richard Pryor and it had a huge effect. what’s similar about now and then is Angeles.

UCH HAS CHANGED AND much has stayed the same in the 20 years since Megadeth released Countdown to Extinction. Megadeth vocalist-guitarist-songwriter Dave Mustaine took some time to AC Weekly talk about why the classic metal album, which will be showcased in its entirety Friday, Nov. 16, at the House of Blues at Showboat, is still resonant today. He also expounded on the similarities and differences between this era and when grunge broke. The revered metal figure also commented on his recent claim that if President Obama were elected, he would leave for Canada.

What do you think will happen in the future? The way things are going after this election is that I think a lot of people are going to be hoping the Mayan Calendar — [saying the world ends December 21, 2012] — is correct. I think life will continue on. We’re a strong nation, no matter who is in the White House. God is in my White House. I’m a Christian and I make a lot of mistakes, but I try to keep my head up and do the right thing. It’s crazy out there. I’m a dad. Oddly enough, my son just got a notice from the Selective Service and he has to register. No one else from his school mentioned they got a notice. My daughter said that she thinks they’re targeting [my son] Justice because of me. I said, “No they are not!” But I was thinking, “What’s going on?” But having two kids, I try to do my best. I have four children, who are 14, 10, 7 and 3 and I have no choice but to do my best. I wish you the best of luck with your kids. I have a few years on you when it comes to parenting. I wanted to have a big family and have four or five kids. It sounds like you have what I very much wanted.

5 Questions With ... Don Felder The former member of the Eagles performs at Golden Nugget Atlantic City By Ray Schweibert

D

ON FELDER’S FRIEND, FELLOW

NOVEMBER 15 - 21, 2012 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

guitar god, and former Eagles colleague Joe Walsh once penned a popular song that satires the pitfalls of the mega-rockstar lifestyle. Felder himself authored in 2008 a best-selling book that chronicles in more detail and less jest what that behind-the-scenes lifestyle can be like. Both Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall-of-Famers have hit the heights of musical success, but while Walsh — a one-time wild man whom Felder helped seek sobriety in the late 1980s — still tours with the Eagles, Felder may best be remembered for a surprising dismissal from the band after a 27-year association (1974-2001), and often tumultuous relationship with Eagles’ front men Glenn Frey and Don Henley that’s detailed in his book Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles. Felder’s success, of course, far overshadows any infamy that may have been born out of a bad band breakup. Besides his New York Times best seller, Felder’s written music for films, television, children’s programs and other musicians. He co-wrote the music for the Eagles’ biggest blockbuster, “Hotel California,” and several of their other hits, and for the past eight years has toured with his own band of thoroughbred musicians. Last month he released just the second solo album of his career, Road to Forever, that features 12 songs suggestive of the guitardriven sound he is well known for. Atlantic City Weekly recently spoke with Felder in anticipation of his Nov. 16 show at Golden Nugget. How has the new record been received by your fan base so far? (Laughs) You know, I had a great deal of trepidation about releasing a record myself. I recorded a solo record in the early ’80s (entitled Airbourne), and when I did I had been on the road for about 11 months out of the year. The first eight or 10 years of my kids’ lives I was an absentee father. This time around I found it a completely different experience. I’ve had a band of my own now for eight years, my kids are all grown and married and out on their own. I had a joyous experience in the studio putting together this record with a bunch of great players who are not only amazing players for their musical ability, but for their very positive energy. You’ve probably heard that all the studio work in the past with the Eagles were less than joyous, very contentious, and not exactly fun to be in the studio with. So it was a completely different feeling for me. When I finished I was very proud of those songs that I had written and co-written with some friends of mine, but I still had some trepidation about releasing it. Once it was out, though, the response I got from those who reviewed the record, the fans on Facebook, and all the people who came out to the shows, was very positive and well received. Like us: 46

Where: The Showroom at Golden Nugget, Atlantic City When: Friday, Nov. 16, 9pm How much: $29.95 general admission; $38.95 premier seating Who else is in your band? I have some amazing players in my band. Everyone in the band has a sterling, substantial pedigree, and I mean by the artists they’ve worked with in the past, the records they’ve made, the entire package. Timothy Drury, my keyboardist, was on the road with us during the Eagles’ Hell Freezes Over tour. He and I left the band around the same time, and we became really close friends during that tour. He’s a great writer and great player, and a brilliant musician. My guy on drums is Scott Deavours, who was out with Roger Daltrey and often tours with The Who when their regular drummer Zak (Starkey, Ringo Starr’s son] is not drumming for them. Frank Simes, my guitar player, is also The Who’s musical director and he’s currently out with them until about mid-February. When they finish he’ll come back with me. In his absence I have another amazing guitar player named Greg Suran, who was in the Goo Goo Dolls for about five years. I have a great bass player named Shem von Schroeck, who’s an operatically trained tenor and actually sings opera once or twice a year. He’s a great singer and bass player who sometimes goes out on tour with Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald and others.

Don Felder plays the Golden Nugget Nov. 16 How else has producing and marketing music changed most since you first started as a musician? In the ’70s all the radio stations were owned by mom-and-pops, whether it was in Atlanta or Dallas or Chicago or New York, they weren’t controlled by one monster corporation like Clear Channel [Communications, Inc.], and anybody would play anything on their radio station that they liked. They followed suggestions for formats, but each DJ kind had his own take on what he wanted to play on his own show. Now it’s kind of gotten to somewhat of a conglomerate approach to play-lists and control of broadcasting. All the brick-and-mortar companies have pretty much gone away as far as record sales — there are very few places where you can go and buy a physical copy of a record without ordering it online. The record companies have pretty much abandoned their old format as far as production and promotion and distribution and everything now. The way they sign artists and the way they make deals now, it’s in what I think is a great state of flux — it gives a lot of people the opportunity to expose themselves through the Internet or independent releases or their own promotion, whereas before, unless you were with a major label, you didn’t really have the chance to expose yourself, per se, on a national level. It’s been both really good and bad. The only thing I regret about the whole transformation of the music industry is that MP3s sound terrible when compared to the level of what you hear

11

in the studio when you’re making a record — so compressed and degraded that if you’re listening through those tiny little ear buds, the quality of what we used to call hi-fidelity has just disappeared. I think there’s a resurgence of vinyl and turntables and people using tube amps and getting away from that digital delivery. And the artwork on vinyl used to be really big, where you could see liner notes, read all the facts, information and credits that go along with the songs. I think that’s been a loss along the way. I listened to an interview you did with Adam Carolla where you and he talk about having to write ideas down right away when you get inspired for new material. Where does most of your inspiration for songs come from? You never know when the inspiration for a song is going to strike. It may be driving down the street and seeing something on the side of the road or walking down the street. I have my iPhone with me all the time and it has a little dictation program in it, and I can just turn it on, sing or talk, whether I’m driving in a car, at home, in the studio — if I get struck with an idea I can throw it down before it goes away, because a day or two later, it’s gone. I can never quite recall what it was I was thinking, or have the same feel, inspiration, idea or energy behind it. I’m constantly scribbling stuff down on legal pads, singing it into my iPhone, trying to capture that moment or take a little Polaroid of it before fine-tuning it in the studio.

What can the audience expect to hear in A.C.? About 60 percent of my show are songs that I either co-wrote, recorded or toured with the Eagles for the 27 years I was with the band, like “Hotel California,” “Victim of Love,” “Heartache Tonight,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” “New Kid in Town” — a lot of those songs we made together and co-wrote and/or recorded together. I do a tip-of-the-hat to Stevie Ray Vaughn, I do (the Vaughn) song “Pride and Joy,” which gives me a chance to rock out and play the blues. I do a song I wrote for an animate movie called “Heavy Metal,” I do probably three or four songs from the new record — it’s about an hour and 45 minutes, sometimes two hours if I yammer in between songs. It’s songs most people know the lyrics to, they’ll be dancing to the last four or five songs. It’s a good time, a rockin’ time. I plan on bringing some joy and rock-and-roll vibes to Atlantic City. Honestly, I’ve played some of the biggest arenas and stadiums in the world, but some of these smaller showrooms have much better sound and there’s much more intimacy. The people get a real special look at the music and how it’s played instead of sitting in the back of a big stadium looking at a big video monitor. It’s a different way to present music, and I personally prefer it. It’s so impersonal to walk on stage with 30, 40 or 50 thousand people where you can only see the first five or 10 rows, and then it’s just a sea of heads. It’s much more personal to play in smaller arenas. n

into a deranged and revenge-minded evil genius. This might be a good time to mention that the film is directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, Road to Perdition), whose career track of character-driven dramas doesn’t seem a natural fit for a Bond adventure. However, working with a screenplay by Bond veterans Neal Purvis and Robert Wade plus John Logan (Gladiator), he has introduced us to our first glimpse at the Bond back story. We learn that Bond is Scottish (a nice nod to Sean Connery), that he was orphaned and that according to M, orphans make the best spies. We aren’t given the details, but we suspect that M deliberately provided a mother figure for her young recruits as a way to control and manipulate them as needed. Silva is a prime example of that manipulation gone horribly wrong. While the middle section of the film drags more than a bit (20 minutes could be trimmed easily), the finish is so spectacular — both emotionally compelling and action-packed — that the Bond franchise appears to be quite healthy and fit for possible decades to come. There is also a nice setup for the next Bond flick, introducing a trio of actors who should enhance the franchise: Naomie Harris (28 Days Later) as Eve, the agent who was ordered to take the shot on the train; Ralph Fiennes as an MI6 executive who turns out to be more than a politician and Ben Whishaw (Cloud Atlas) who takes over as the computer geek/gadget master Q. Best of all Craig, the blonde Bond, continues to prove that he is the second best 007 in franchise history. n

AVIER BARDEM REALLY KNOWS how to rock a bad haircut as an ultimate villain. In the latest Bond adventure, Skyfall, Bardem plays cyber terrorist Silva, who sports a magnificently awful bleach-blonde dye job and has serious mommy issues when it comes to his hatred for M (Judi Dench). He’s totally deranged, but with enough control to be a worthy opponent for not only James Bond (Daniel Craig) and M, but the entire British secret service. It has been four years since the last Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, left us wondering if the franchise was running out of steam again. However, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the franchise with the 23rd Bond film, the answer is decidedly no. With a grandiose opening, a spy vs. spy chase sequence through Istanbul, and a thrilling final confrontation at a Scottish castle (the Bond family’s ancestral home as it turns out), the less-than compelling middle section of the film doesn’t do as much damage as one feared sitting through it. Bond is in Istanbul chasing after a damaging piece of intel that could expose the identities of numerous agents embedded around the globe. The list is lost despite the best efforts of 007, who is shot while fighting atop a moving train, plunging into the water below. Several months later with Bond assumed dead, the MI6 headquarters is attacked via a complex computer program that causes a gas leak and an explosion. This terrorist is determined to bring down MI6 with a personal vendetta against M, suggesting that he once worked for her. Bond isn’t dead (alert the media!) and comes back into the fold to protect M and stop the terrorist, Silva, who was indeed a former MI6 agent and who blames M for the injuries that have turned him
