Bally’s Goes Back in Time Inspired by ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ Bally’s will soon launch a free walking tour that blends elements of its Beaux-Arts architecture with historic artifacts, photographs, classic cocktails and more. By Ray Schweibert

Some of what will be on display will highlight specific areas of what is directly connected to Bally’s, and others more general historically significant photos and objects connected to Atlantic City in the ’20s and ’30s. Much of the display came from Pergament’s prized collection, such as photographs that were blown up into giant reproductions. “What Boo also provided us with, in addition to the photography and such, is some commentary,” says Chamberlin. “What was so much fun was when we were at his house and he was showing us some pictures, and he’d launch into a story behind each picture. We thought, ‘This is what we need to capture,’ so he’s provided a lot of the historical commentary that goes along with the photography. There will be audio [narrated by Pergament], so folks can download it as podcasts to their iPods, but there will also be little signs similar to those you’ll see in museums, so that if you don’t have the audio tour downloaded you’ll still be able to walk around and read descriptions of each item.” If Pergament is the tour’s de facto narrator, Margate’s Mattola holds a similar role from a visual standpoint. “She does the kind of artwork like murals of the old-style bathing beauties from the 1920s,” says Chamberlin. “We have a lot of that installed on the building already [on Bally’s Boardwalk exterior], and it will be coming back into the property. There will be different themed murals, I’d say about 10-by-10 foot in size, depicting some of the more historic moments in A.C.’s history.” The free tour will have its central staging area in Bally’s hotel lobby, and the lobby bar will be part of the experience with employees in era-apropos outfits, cocktail menus with specials on drinks with a nod to the past [like Manhattans, Stingers, Sidecars, Rusty Nails, etc.], and the whole concept will be tied into some forthcoming December promotions at Bally’s, like a 1920s classic-car giveaway. “I think, depending on the kind of response we receive, [a guided tour] might be something that we consider too,” says Chamberlin. “Maybe we’ll have someone from the local library give a semi-guided tour at certain times, like on a busy Saturday afternoon. We’ve been kicking that idea around a bit along with some others.” N

O S T O F T H E M A J E S T I C hotels that graced Atlantic City’s Prohibition-era skyline have faded into oblivion — like the Ambassador, the Breakers, the Brighton, the St. Charles, the Marlborough-Blenheim and others. Two still flourishing are tied to the same property, Bally’s at Park Place and the Boardwalk, and this unique link to the city’s past as an original seaside resort sort of gives Bally’s sovereign status amid the hoopla created by HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Bally’s’ annexed Dennis and Claridge hotels have both undergone multi-milliondollar restoration projects prior to the TV series’ start. That, coupled with their historic stature, helped hatch the notion for a 1920s-’30s-themed walking history tour that will likely be launched this weekend. “Bally’s has a lot of different historic parts to it, so we thought ‘the history’s here, we have the room to do this, and it just seems so right and legitimate to do it at Bally’s,’” says Erin Chamberlin, VP of marketing for Bally’s and its Harrah’s Entertainment sister property, Caesars. It was partially due to a rousing response to a recent Caesars’ event that helped incite the idea for the Bally’s walking tour too. “At Caesars we had such a good response to the Boardwalk Empire premiere [in September during the show’s premiere viewing party, a meet-and-greet with cast members, and a panel discussion hosted by AC Weekly editor Jeff Schwachter],” says Chamberlin. “We had easily over 1,000 people at Circus Maximus who came to see the premiere and hear the panel. So there was a lot of interest in that whole era in Atlantic City that the panel was discussing, and not just how it related to the show. We thought, ‘Wow, there’s a lot of interest here and we should try to take advantage of that.’ “A good population of folks who come visit us at Bally’s are locals, and we wanted to do something that really spoke to those folks, so we started brainstorming and reaching out to a few people like [Allen] Boo Pergament [a noted historian who was part of the Sept. panel], Virgi Mattola [a local artist who depicts historic components of Atlantic City in 1920s-themed murals], and we put a bunch of people together from our team and from outside, and came up with this idea for the walking tour.”

Held in tandem with the milestone dates of two entities that have done much to positively influence Atlantic City — the 75th anniversary of the world’s most famous board game, Monopoly, and the 36th anniversary of Atlantic City Weekly — several pieces of artwork were on display at Atlantic City Weekly’s Then & Now party last Friday night, Nov. 12, at The Disco at Trump Marina. Noted board-game artists Jim and Kathleen Keifer recreated oilon-canvas Monopoly game pieces on board squares and loaned them to the party for display. The works are part of the couple’s “Art of the Game” series that also includes Scrabble, the Art! Jim Keifer is a longtime game designer for Mattel, Parker Brothers and the Milton Bradley Company. He has designed hundreds of games and puzzles that are manufactured and distributed throughout the world, and holds 15 patents dealing with game-play mechanics and component configuration. He grew up in Pacific Palisades, Calif., according to his Web site, and studied aerospace engineering at Notre Dame. “When I went to Notre Dame I wanted to be an aerospace engineer, like my father,” Keifer writes on his site. “But I quickly found out that higher math sucked and that I was more interested in the art classes. Better to sculpt a cool flying machine that looked fantastic, like the Zephyrs, than to have to design one that actually worked. Instead I focused on painting and industrial design. ‘Johnnie’s Run’ to Benefit Christian Clopp

Established to promote public awareness and provide financial and moral support for families dealing with childhood illnesses, the 12th annual Johnnie’s Run 5K race and onemile fun run will take place Sunday, Nov. 28, at Fred and Ethel’s Lantern Light Tavern in Smithville, starting 11:30am. The race committee for this year’s event has named eightyear-old Hamilton Township resident Christian Clopp the primary beneficiary. A third grader at the George L. Hess Educational Complex, brother to 11-year-old Mark Jr. and son of Mark Sr. and Joan Clopp, Christian was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October. He currently receives homebound instruction while undergoing daily radiation treatments at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. A participant on the Hamilton Township Soccer Club’s U-8 Bulls soccer team and a member of Cub Scout Pack 254 of Mays Landing, Christian and his family will receive financial assistance and emotional support from this year’s Johnnie’s Run — an event named after a young man, Johnnie Bieniakowski, who contracted Lymphocytic Leukemia at age four. Portions of the run’s proceeds will also go to the Friends of Trisomy 21 Center, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the ARC of Atlantic County. I T H A L L T H E H Y P E surrounding Boardwalk Empire, many are taking the time to learn more about the rich history of Atlantic City. And as some have been researching and looking forward to watching more episodes of this season’s hottest TV show, which airs Sundays at 9pm on HBO, others have been working on providing people with a piece of history through a different medium. One such person is Galloway Township-based jewelry designer Paula Jerome of Paula Jerome Designs. At a much simpler time in life, Jerome spent her childhood going “down the shore� to Atlantic City to beat the summer heat in Philadelphia. She reminisces about the beautiful white sandy beaches, the Boardwalk with its rolling chairs, the salt water taffy, Miss America pageants, and the thrilling Diving Horse shows. With all of these memories etched in Jerome’s head, it only seemed logical to share them through her passion: making jewelry. Hence, The Atlantic City Charms Collection, her Fall 2010 collection of Atlantic City landmarks, was born. The new collection features eight different hand-crafted charms each representing either historic or current Atlantic City landmarks. Not only are the charms beautiful; they are made from 100-percent recycled sterling silver and 14k gold. No mines were stripped for the precious metals, according to Jerome, and her designs are cast using a “green� method in which no groundwater is polluted. When asked about her favorite design, Paula says she has two — one from her heart and one from her soul. The Bathing Beauty piece has her heart and was inspired by a picture of her mom in her 20s, posing on the Atlantic City beach. The Atlantic City Postcard charm has her soul because it speaks to her childhood nostalgia of Atlantic City and “more simpler times.� Other iconic charms to choose from in the collection are the James Salt Water Taffy, Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy, the Diving Horse, Rolling Chair, Atlantic City Jitney, and, of course, Lucy the Elephant. Although Jerome’s pieces were inspired by her Jersey shore memories, she consulted two local historians — Vicki Gold Levi (a consultant to HBO on Boardwalk Empire) and Allen “Boo� Pergament — to check the charms’ historical accuracy. These unique, localized and timely pieces can be worn for both casual days and upscale events. Jerome says that her jewelry seems to have found a home with the “self-purchasing woman.� In other words, a woman who “knows who she is, what she wants, and has the ability to purchase it.� This woman can be a fashionista, a young mother, a career woman, or even a baby boomer like Jerome. The jeweler says she tries very hard to keep all of her charm bracelets “balanced� so that they don’t roll around on one’s wrist, respecting the wearer without compromising her design. “If you are blessed to be working with your passion that is a true sign of where you need to be,� says Jerome, who encourages artists to never give up on their passions. One of her favorite books is Malcolm Gladwell’s popular Outliers. One Jersey Boy Helping Another By David J. Spatz

S

OME PEOPLE WAIT FOR WHAT seems like forever hoping for their life to come full circle. John Menzano made the trip in just 25 years. Menzano will be back on an Atlantic City stage this weekend. Only instead of standing next to an equally anonymous musician on a casino lounge stage, which he did for about three years, he’ll be standing next to a music legend. When Frankie Valli opens a threenight gig Friday (Nov. 19) in the Music Box at Borgata, Menzano will be playing his bass just a few feet away. “Whenever Frankie walks on stage and I hear the crowd roar, I get goose bumps,” says Menzano, who grew up in South Philadelphia before moving across the river to southern New Jersey, where he graduated from Highland Regional High School in Blackwood in 1980. “The man is a true icon,” he adds in something of a solid gold understatement. The journey that took Menzano from the stages of the casino lounges of Atlantic City in the early ’80s to the stages of the world is a fairly inspirational one. A self-taught musician, Menzano followed a fairly time-honored path, especially for guy who spent the first 12 years of his life living in South Philly. “My dad was a member of a string band, so then I joined,” he tells Atlantic City Weekly. The Menzanos were members of the Original Trilby String Band and marched in Philadelphia’s annual Mummer’s Parade. “We were always bad,” he adds with a laugh, “but I loved it. I still get excited when I hear [string band] music today.” After moving to New Jersey, Menzano’s natural talents helped him hook up with several bands. Through high school and beyond, he played the local circuit with regular gigs at places like the old Penalty Box in Wildwood and Dick Lees in Bellmawr, which is now the Pennant East. Menzano was mentored by Keith Benson, the house drummer at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. Benson hooked Menzano up with musician Keith Alexander and spent three years working four or more sets a night, six nights at week, in Atlantic City’s casino lounges. In 1985, a friend announced he was moving to Los Angeles to attend music school.

Menzano decided there would never be a better time to expand his musical knowledge, so he followed suit. “My dad was in the car business, and I kind of dabbled in it, but then [dad] finally asked me what I wanted to do [with my life],” Menzano recalls. “I told him I wanted to do music.” Menzano struggled through and survived the starving-artist period many young musicians endure and began landing jobs in rock bands and even on television. Menzano eventually made the switch to smooth jazz and began touring with artists such as Dave Koz, Rick Braun and Peter White. He hooked up with Three Dog Night “for about a minute,” spent time touring with pop star Sheena Easton, and then served as Donny Osmond’s music director for two years before joining Valli’s band. Along the way, he recorded his own album, a smooth jazz instrumental titled Thumbs Up, which features contributions by jazz artists like Michael Lington, Everette Harp, Lee Thornburg and Brian Culbertson. But the gig with Valli is easily a major career highlight, Menzano, 47, says. “I grew up listening to that music, especially songs like ‘Grease’ and ‘Who Loves You,’” he explains. “And my parents were big fans of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. They used to see them at Palombo’s [in South Philadelphia] all the time.” Even after working with Valli for two years, Menzano says he’s still amazed that the original Jersey boy routinely sells out 2,000-seat concert halls and has fans from 10 to 80 and older in the audience, and all the generations are singing the lyrics. “Not too many artists can do that,” he says of the 76-year-old singer. “Plus not too many guys his age can get out there and do what he does every night. He’s just amazing. The people still go crazy for him.” N

HANKSGIVING IS APPROACHING, so I’ve been reaching out to the people and organizations in the area I am thankful for, and asking them for a few words on why they are thankful this year. Atlantic City Councilman Mo Degaldo: When I met Councilman Degaldo, he was freshman Delgaldo at Atlantic City High School. We grew up in the same neighborhood, and if anyone cares more about community than me, it’s Mo. The fact is, no one in Atlantic City was more capable of filling the seat formerly held by the great Eugene Robinson. What is Councilman Delgado thankful for? “When all else fails, despite the hardships had and the barriers we place in front of each other, I am thankful that God affords opportunities to all.” Lisa Johnson of Lisa Johnson Communications: I was thankful because Lisa was one of the great minds behind bringing back the annual Diabetes Telethon here in Atlantic City. Sandra Usry, a woman I give credit to for opening doors for me, played a very important role in the annual event during her lifetime. What is Lisa thankful for? “I am thankful for everything that happened to me in 2010 — good and bad. Every step and misstep were steps toward making me a better person. I guess you can say I have an attitude of gratitude.”

OKER MAY BE THE MOST popular casino table game in the country right now, but from the viewpoint of a casino’s bottom line, it’s still just a marketing tool. Poker players play against each other, not the house. Casinos see little revenue from the game. But casinos offer the game for a variety of reasons — not the least of which is what kind of a casino are you if you don’t offer the most popular form of gambling out there? Essentially, however, poker is offered to attract players (who may play other games as well) and excitement to the property. And right now, several Atlantic City casinos are using poker very well during a traditionally slow time of year for the resort. Most notable is the Borgata, which is probably the best at using its poker room to keep its casino floor crowded. Aside from its four seasonal “opens,” including the Borgata Open in September (a World Poker Tour stop), the casino is absolutely ingenious about offering special tournaments during the off months. One of the casino’s most successful promotions is its guaranteed Deepstack tournaments. This month the casino offered a series of Deepstack events capped off by last weekend’s $250,000 guaranteed, No Limit tournament. The $1,000 buy-in event attracted 317 players and thus a $317,000 prize pool. The tournament was won by Eric Wasserman of Narberth, Pa., an online pro making a rare splash in a live event. He won $97,165. Lots of burgeoning pros have used the Borgata’s tournaments as a stepping stone. John Racener, for example, who finished second in the World Series of Poker main event this year, has several Borgata cashes on his record, including an $89,000 cash at a Borgata guaranteed Deepstack event in 2008. Unfortunately, not all tournament promotions are as successful. The Taj Mahal’s United States Poker Championship has continued to underwhelm this month in turnouts for its events. Still, the championship’s regular events have offered some local amateurs a chance at nice payouts without too much hardcore pro competition. But that could change Friday when the actual “championship” event gets underway. The $5,000 + $250 four-day event,

which will be broadcast on syndicated TV, may be just what pros have been waiting for and should finally bring some big crowds to the Taj poker room. A series of $525 + $25 satellite events are also scheduled for Thursday. Needless to say, The Taj needs a good turnout to salvage the championship series and bring some attention to the property. In December, Harrah’s Entertainment keeps the ball rolling with a World Series of Poker Circuit event, which could really light up December for Harrah’s Resort. The circuit events have been drawing well, especially when a regional championship event is included in the mix. And Harrah’s will be offering a regional event, along with its $10,000 buy in, on Dec. 19. The circuit event also offers an $1,100 No Limit event Dec. 9 and a $1,650 “main event” Dec. 12. As stated here before, a recent circuit event in Chicago, which also included a super regional, drew record crowds for a circuit event and a slew of pros. Though most of the other events in the circuit event are similar to the USPC’s tournament, Harrah’s benefits from its WSOP brand and the marketing effort behind it. Still, for our money, the city’s best poker marketing tool is still its bad-beat jackpots. While competitors such as Delaware Park and Foxwoods certainly have their own bad beats (actually, everybody seems to use the gimmick now), there’s still no other place outside of Vegas that gives you so many choices, high jackpots and chances to win the bad beat as Atlantic City. In the last week, for example, two badbeat jackpots hit in the city. The Borgata’s bad-beat jackpot hit Tuesday (Nov. 9) for $251,402. And that’s the full jackpot, set for a minimum hand of quad 10s. In this case, Nathan Presnal of Edgewater, Md., saw his quad jacks lose and took home $100,560. Raghavan Sathianathan, of Montclair, took home $50,280 and the pot with quad kings. The remaining seven players at the table won $14,366. Also Sunday, the Taj Mahal’s bad beat hit for about $141,000 as a queen-high straight flush took down four queens. No details were released, but that should be an about $70,000 hit for the bad-beat winner/loser. And nothing promotes the city better than players winning money. N

Shinedown strums into town on its acoustic tour, the hard-rock band’s third 2010 appearance in Atlantic City. By Jeff Schwachter HE NINTH OF DECEMBER WILL MARK Jacksonville, Fla., hard-rock band Shinedown’s 442nd concert. “And I know it’s probably well over that number,” says the band’s lead singer and chief songwriter Brent Smith. “We didn’t even start counting till the record came out [Shinedown’s third and last studio album, The Sound of Madness, released in June 2008 on Atlantic Records] and we were doing shows three months before the record came out. We’ve been supporting this record for a long time, and on Dec. 9 in New Orleans it’ll be two years and seven months that we’ve toured it.” Before touching down in Louisiana, the band plays the House of Blues at Showboat on Saturday, Nov. 20. The kind of relentless touring that Smith describes — “We’ve played the House of Blues at least 15 times,” he says — is what it takes for many a young band to make it in the music biz these days. And Shinedown has embraced it over the past several years.

By year’s end, the band — which features the Knoxville, Tenn.-bred Smith on vocals, Barry Kerch on drums, Zach Myers on guitars, and Eric Bass on bass — will have performed three times in Atlantic City alone. First at the House of Blues at Showboat with Puddle of Mudd in late January, then over the summer opening for Nickelback at Boardwalk Hall, and finally this coming Saturday night for a return performance at the House of Blues. Saturday’s show, however, will not be the same show fans got the last time around. Not only will Shinedown headline this time out, but the band will also be hawking a new release, the deluxe CD/DVD re-issue of The Sound of Madness, featuring bonus tracks, B-sides and a new single, “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay-Boom-Lay Boom),” which the band recorded for the Sly Stallone flick The Expendables. Additionally the band will be playing naked. Not in the actual sense, but musically speaking. Be prepared to hear the original album’s three No. 1 singles – The Sound of Madness debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Top 200 chart upon its initial release in 2008 — “Devour, the double-platinum certified crossover hit, “Second Chance” and the title track — stripped down. Earlier this month, the band kicked off its first acoustic tour, entitled the “Anything and Everything” tour, which runs in conjunction with the Nov. 23 re-release of the band’s The Sound of Madness.

Borgata’s Culinary Sensation

Savor Borgata brought some of the finest chefs to Atlantic City for a fine-food and drink extravaganza By Frank Gabriel

Wolfgang Puck with Marc and Andrea Sherry Mina’s second offering, piccolo fritto misto, arrived in a delicate basket. Three tiny, perfectly fried shrimp — no easy task with items this small — combined with the unique citrus flavors of Meyer lemon. Our dining strategy next brought us to Geoffrey Zakarian’s realm, the New York-based food guru of Borgata’s sister property, The Water Club. He served up what we consider to be the most challenging, thoughtful items on this night. As with DiBona, we had an opportunity to converse with Zakarian, and queried about one of these creations — a brandade beignet with spicy rouille and roasted lemon. Brandade, characterized by the chef as “a hearty, peasant preparation� is composed of rehydrated salt cod (baccala) blended with potatoes passed through a ricer to create a smooth texture. Zakarian’s out-of-the-box thinking was to create a beignet, New Orleans’ favorite fried breakfast treat, in savory form from that fish and veg mixture. This resulted in a crisp fritter-like exterior, hot and soft within. His other plating, rillettes of foie gras with truffled fig marmalade and dragees hydromel was nothing short of

genius. The foie, slowly cooked in oil, was rich and luxurious enough to stand alone. Add to that the seasonal sweetness of chocolatey figs, and this became a transcendent experience that we returned to sample multiple times. Representing Spain, Chef Michael Chiarlanza of Bobby Flay steak house served a surprising stuffed piquillo pepper. The crimson, mildly smoky chile, stuffed with tuna tartare, was finished by one of the night’s finest sauces, a saffron-infused yellow pepper blend. Michael Schulson of Izakaya’s “new style� seafood paella offered octopus, chiles, chorizo and a saffron-miso vinaigrette. What really got our attention, however, was the rice. Puffy and light, it reminded us of a haute-cuisine take on Rice Krispies, novel and whimsical. The evening’s longest lines, throughout the event, belonged to Austrian-born, California-based Wolfgang Puck. Snaking almost halfway across the spacious room, we wondered why? Obtaining visual range, things became clearer. Puck’s minions were busily engaged preparing steamy orders of fresh ricotta gnocchi, tossing and saucing those creamy discs. Simulatenously, cooks grilled huge hunks of Bistecca Fiorentina, the glorious, Tuscan-style porterhouse. Basting with natural “brushes� of olive oil soaked rosemary, the foresty aroma wafted and intoxicated. Trust us, a la minute preparation like this takes great big culinary cojones. Puck, sweat on his brow, personally carving and portioning that precious, mid-rare beef, adding a pinch of salt before sending. How cool is that? Rounding out our evening — no big deal, just former White House Executive Pastry Chef Thaddeus DuBois. His service delivered hot espresso-chocolate gelato from Italy, a Mantecados biscuit with lemon creme from Spain, and authentically French crepe Suzettes. The best part for us: watching this creme-de-la-creme dessert master burn his fingers banging out massive quantities of espresso with press-style coffeemakers. And not stop moving for a second. N

AJOR CORPORATIONS THROUGHOUT the world have what is known as a “Key Person Policy.� Simply put, this dictates that head honchos — whoever they might be — not travel together, in case of catastrophic accident. The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa defied that logic again Saturday, Nov. 13 with its second annual “Savor Borgata� dining extravaganza. Nine of the world’s finest chefs, including a former White House executive chef, convened to present a evening of astonishing gastonomic art. Held in that facility’s Event Center — the room reconfigured from rock concert use to an open, airy space filled with bright lights and white heat — allowed a glamorous, dramatic stage for those culinary stars to present their creations. Working with the theme “A Taste of France, Spain and Italy,� each country was represented by several of Borgata’s restaurants. We began our meal, as all great sups should begin, with oysters. Not ordinary oysters, mind you, but rare, round Belons from the rocky shores of Brittany, in north-westernmost France. These massive creatures were topped by rough shaved strips of fresh horseradish. Presented by chef Romeo DiBona of Old Homestead steakhouse, they were finished by a dousing of champagne migonette. Speaking with the Philly-born chef a few hours prior, he hinted at an insider tip. The classic vinegar-shallot dressing had been augmented with a tiny hint of amber Vermont maple syrup. Together, the combination of meaty, steely oysters plus heat, sour and sweet opened our palates, preparing for the delights ahead. From his station we also sampled a fine filet mignon with carmelized shallots and arugula on grilled toast. Moving to SeaBlue’s Michael Mina, we were treated to a pair of seafood items. The first, tuna crudo with fennel and black olive “panzanella� was deceptively simple, allowing the ahi’s natural fattiness top billing.

his era may go down as the nadir in entertainment. Part of the reason that music, comedy and film have hit rock bottom is that performers care too much about how they are perceived. Too many stars worry about appealing to the masses. But there are some folks in Hollywood who thumb their nose at the establishment. Bill Maher is one of those comedic mavericks. Maher, who will perform Saturday (Nov. 20) at Caesars Atlantic City, hasn’t wavered since his aptly titled former vehicle, the late and lamented Politically Incorrect TV show debuted in 1993. Maher doesn’t care what anyone thinks. He’ll stick his neck out anytime while voicing an opinion. Shortly after the 9/11 tragedy, Maher suggested that the terrorists who flew into the Twin Towers were hardly “cowards.” That’s why Politically Incorrect was snuffed out. Maher, 54, host of the HBO gem, Real Time With Bill Maher, may be aging, but he is still cynical and irreverent. The edgy antithesis of Fox talking head Bill O’Reilly has gone Howard Cosell (i.e., he tells it like it is). The political and cultural arbiter of taste does what he wants. Maher had the nerve to make Religulous, a comedy documentary about one of the humorist’s favorite subjects: religion. Maher has always been a risk-taker. “I’m just the way I am,” Maher says. “It’s not like I’m trying to be a certain way. I have a viewpoint and it’s comedic. Regarding Religulous, I wanted to make a documentary that’s funny. I wanted people who go to the multiplex say, ‘What’s the alternative to the new Owen Wilson film? What else here is funny?’ I wanted to make a documentary that’s enlightening and amusing.” Comedy is at the core everything Maher delivers. He is perhaps most amusing when discussing politics, which is usually what he and his panel chat about during Real Time.

Comic and host of HBO’s ‘Real Time’ brings his words of wisdom to Caesars

Since many politicians are part of the Fox News crew, you would think that perhaps the cocksure Maher would consider a run for presidency. Maher laughs off the possibility. “I would be the easiest candidate to ever knock out of a race,” Maher tells Atlantic City Weekly. “All they would ever have to do is show any show I’ve ever done.” Maher’s pro-drug/anti-religion stance wouldn’t help him win over the heartland. “There you go,” Maher says with a laugh. “Right off the bat I’ve lost the race. Politics is all about being ultrasafe. That’s why I like having people on who are no longer in politics. They can dish.” Maher is certainly on the liberal side of the fence, but not so much that he believes that the Bush administration knocked down the Twin Towers. During one taping of his HBO show, 9/11 conspiracy nuts freaked out at the Real Time studio. “They tried to shut my show down,” Maher says. “I had to kick them out of my audience. They were mad at me because they think I speak out in so many areas. They agree with me on a lot of things. They think I’m someone, unlike the puppets on TV, who sees past the crap. They were extremely disappointed that I don’t see things their way and they believe that George Bush knocked down the World Trade Center.” The world did see the footage of the planes crashing into the buildings, which suggests that extremists did indeed topple the towers. “Exactly,” Maher says. “Unless someone planted charges all the way up the building ... don’t you think someone would have seen the person doing that? ‘Fred keeps going out in the hallway an awful lot. Is he in that stairwell again?’ It’s silly. They look at me like I’m

the crazy one.” Maher isn’t crazy. He is provocative, unpredictable and usually very funny. He’s also a hard worker. His Real Time schedule is rigorous, but he still manages to squeeze in stand-up comedy shows. “It’s not easy,” Maher says. “That show takes a lot out of me. There are so many elements to put a show together, even if it is just an hour. I feel like I’m working non-stop, but I’m doing something that I love to do. I don’t think I can complain, but I’m usually pretty fried when you add up all the hours put in for Real Time and then there is the stand-up I’m doing, but it beats having a regular job somewhere. I’m sure people with those jobs are fried and I’m not sure they love what they do as much as I love what I do.” Maher likes the fact that he has a long-running show on HBO, which is usually thought of as “an artist’s network.” However, don’t tell Maher that he tells it like it is due to HBO. “The misconception that I always hear is: ‘It’s great you’re on HBO; you can say whatever you want,’” Maher says. “That’s not true. I’ve always said whatever I wanted. Sometimes it’s gotten me in trouble, but that’s the way it is. I never pull any punches.” Maher is happy with his lot in life. He doesn’t lust after a network talk-show gig, but he believes he could do the job. “I think it would be a waste [to do a late-night chat fest],” Maher says. “Honestly, I think I could do it with one hand tied behind my back. I don’t think it’s nearly as challenging as what I do with [Real Time]. That’s a lot of work. It seems like it would be a lot easier talking to Lindsay Lohan for 10 minutes. I think I can probably handle that stoned and drunk.” n

three shows into its current acoustic tour, Smith says the crowd response has been “spectacular.” He adds: “People are walking away really astonished with the show. This is the very first time I’m speaking about these songs and telling people exactly what they’re about. This is how the song was written. This is where it came from and this is why we wrote it. It’s the first time I’ve laid all the walls down around these songs…. This is what these songs mean to me, and this is why I wrote them. “The biggest element of Anything & Everything is the fact that this is the very first time that this is really a [VH1] Storytellers type of event,” says Smith. “I didn’t want to take the name Storytellers because VH1 uses that, so that’s ultimately why we named the tour Anything & Everything — because you can ask us anything and we’ll tell you everything.” Smith advises fans not to expect a snoozer of a show, with the acoustic setting dismantling the band’s renowned kick-ass rock show. “Ultimately, there are points of the [current] show with seven people on stage at one time,” says Smith. “And we’ve basically gone in and reworked these songs into a different manner. And then the other big part of the show is that it’s still a full on rock show. We don’t want people thinking that they’re gonna walk in and it’s like gonna be all quiet, and that you’re supposed to sit in your seats, sip your wine and all that kind of stuff. It’s still a full-on Shinedown show and our goal is to always let it go, on every single level.” N

“The vinyl is a really cool thing we got to do very, very last minute,” says Smith. “And the only thing was, we said that if we were gonna do a vinyl [version] we had to make it really, really super cool.” Smith says they made 600 copies of the vinyl reissue and “they were gone in no time” courtesy of pre-orders. Smith advises vinyl-loving Shinedown fans to look out for some “Christmas specials” over the next few weeks, during which the band is going to reissue more vinyl copies of the reissue. “We’re gonna reissue a couple thousand [more] for Christmas time,” says Smith. Here’s another tip from the band’s leader: Don’t be late for Saturday’s concert. “Bear, who is our drummer’s tech, actually has a 20-minute set at 7:20 every night,” says Smith. “When the doors open, he’s actually playing the vibes and the timpani bells, and also playing these giant, giant boulder drums and a lot of tambourine and shakers. He has a huge setup with these really eclectic worldly type instruments. It’s a very, very percussionary [sic] style and element that he’s bringing to the show.” A good balance with the acoustic show, which will also feature a Q&A session with the band. “Four people [will] get an opportunity to ask us questions [at each show on this tour],” says Smith. “That’s usually done through winning the opportunity from a radio station. If you win the opportunity to ask a question, the questions aren’t screened; you can ask us anything you want.” Speaking by phone after the band was

y anyone’s reckoning, Michael Frawley, COO of the Atlantic City Hilton, has a highpressure job. He runs a casino in a highpressure market in a high-pressure and decidedly down economy. Everyday, someone seems to start a rumor of his casino’s imminent demise. Like we said — pressure. So a guy like that needs to blow off a little steam, find a release, get some R and R. And like so many of his fellow casino heads, Frawley finds that release in one of the most tranquil and relaxing places around — down in the pit of hardcore rock shows by groups such as Social Distortion or Papa Roach, snapping away on his camera. OK, maybe you won’t find all that many casino execs that relax by morphing into a rock photographer. “Some guys play golf, I take pictures,” Frawley explains. “I love it and I find it to be such a great release. I’m the kind of guy who gets tired when he has nothing to do. I like to try and capture the energy and the passion I see in these groups.” So much so, that Frawley works about three times a week as a photographer. But we know what you’re thinking. Somewhere, there’s a befuddled group of Hilton employees who have to indulge their bosses photography whim. “Yes Mr. Frawley, that’s a wonderful picture of the Christmas Spectacular you’ve taken. Santa seems so life-like.” Not hardly. For one thing, Frawley rarely shoots at the Hilton. And secondly, he doesn’t do Christmas shows (not that there is anything wrong with that). Nope. Frawley can be found at venues all over Atlantic City, from the House of Blues to the Borgata, and in numerous live-music spots in Philadelphia. And when it comes to the acts he shoots, it’s a decidedly rock feel. Just this past weekend, he shot the Allman Brothers at the Taj Mahal and the Hendrix Experience concert at Caesars. “Some of the shows I’ve loved doing recently have been Papa Roach, and I especially enjoyed shooting Billy Idol, largely because his guitarist Steve Stevens was so gracious and nice to me. And I loved the

[recent] Social Distortion show.” Noticing a trend here? The COO of the Hilton is a punk-rock-loving hardcore bad ass. “Actually, I’m more of a blues guy,” Frawley says. “But this has really given me an opportunity to discover some music I didn’t know too much about. The thing for me though is the passion and the energy. These types of bands are very passionate about their music. For me it’s about trying to capture that on film.” Frawley spent years in “another life,” as he describes it, as an aspiring guitarist and was involved with video and other ways of presenting shows. But it was only about five or six years ago he picked up photography. For a relative newcomer, he’s developed a signature style quickly, with a vibrant use of color and a knack for action in his shots. He ascribes his quick development to Atlantic City and the Philadelphia area, which has a constant stream of shows and a steady, talented group of photographers on the scene to learn from. “One of the great things for me is working with all the photographers around here,” he says. “We trade tips and I learn so much from them. You know, how to work with changing lighting and colors

to be moonlighting, he says his passion for photography isn’t about the commercial. He shoots mostly for publicity firms and not the Hilton. “It’s not really about money for me,” he says. “It’s about art. That’s why I do these rock bands. I’m trying to capture what they’re doing on stage. It’s all about capturing their passion in a photo. That’s what I’m in it for.” And like most commercial photographers shooting the Atlantic City show scene, he is willing to take his turn in the pit. “I’ve been down there with the crowd surfers and the wild crowds,” he says. “I’ve even had blood spit on me from the stage. But that’s the challenge. Many times when you shoot a show, you only get to do the first three songs before they kick you out. You have to be ready and you have to think quick.” Only three songs? ack in September I selected some fall favorites on my cinematic “to-do” list — including the soon-to-arrive Burlesque, and in December, Tron: Legacy, Country Strong and True Grit — but here are a few more movies that look like they are worth the time and effort to check out when you have a break from holiday shopping.

movie star and Scott hired his favorite star, Denzel Washington. They have made five films together, including two train stories in a row (the other was 2009’s The Taking of Pelham 123). Washington provides the spark of humanity needed to instantly like his character, veteran conductor Frank Barnes. Rising star Chris Pine (Star Trek) provides the standard young whippersnapper turn as Will Colson, the rookie conductor who joins forces with Washington to stop the unstoppable. The film provides a bit of contemporary flavoring involving corporate downsizing, but basically this is a movie about the big scary train and the two guys who will defy the corporate bean counters and do what’s right, even if it means they have to jump onto a moving train doing 80 miles an hour. It isn’t realistic (the actual runaway train was doing about 10mph when the real-life hero hopped on board), but it’s fun and it will get your heart pumping. n
