n Saturday, Nov. 30, the Atlantic City Alliance (ACA) is bringing back the popular 3D sound and light show Winter Sweet on the facade of Boardwalk Hall for its second year. To celebrate the season (and holiday sweets) the ACA will also have a free Winter Sweet Spectacular every Saturday starting Nov. 30 and running through Dec. 21 (from 5:30–7:30pm). At the Saturday Winter Sweet Spectacular, in front of Boardwalk Hall on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, guests will be able to enjoy free cupcakes, hot chocolate and salt water taffy, as well as festive music. A free photo in the “Winter Sweet” Photo Booth, with the A.C. Ballet’s Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker, will also be available during the Spectacular events. In case you missed it last year, Winter Sweet is a seven-minute show that features three magical worlds. According to the ACA: “By using hundreds of visual elements, including a number of 3D effects, Montreal’s Moment Factory captured the enchanting season and heartwarming, memorable moments of winter.” Winter Sweet will be shown nightly every half hour from 5:30-8:30pm (Sun.-Thurs.) and 5:30-9:30pm (Fri. & Sat.) between Nov. 30-Dec. 21.

fter 55 years, the radio show “Pinky’s Corner” has flourished on News/ Talk radio 1400 WOND. During that time, Atlantic City legend Pinky Kravitz broadcasted for over 196,000 hours (more than 701 consecutive days) from at least 20 different remote broadcasting locations. Even after 55 years, Kravitz still has a loyal band of followers and has become one of the region’s “most recognized, trusted and beloved media personalities” via what has become the longest-running radio program (on one station, by a single personality) in the country. Kravitz has worn many hats during the course of his lifetime, including nightclub manager, physical education teacher, basketball coach and newspaper columnist. He wrote his “Pinky’s Corner” column for Atlantic City Weekly (and for its predescesor the Whoot!) for more than 25 years and earned the nickname “Mr. Atlantic City” due to his interest in making Atlantic City the best resort it can be. After debuting, Kravitz’s radio show became a must-do for celebrities and politicians in the city. Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe, Eleanor Roosevelt, Frank Sinatra, Sen. Hap Farley, Gov. Jon Corzine, and many Miss Americas are just a few of the hundreds of wellknown guests who have spent time live on air in “Pinky’s Corner.” “I’ve been blessed to not only have the support of my family, a radio station and city for all of these years, but also the love and support of an entire region,” says Kravitz. WOND will mark Pinky’s broadcasting milestone with a special live broadcast and celebration on Friday, Nov. 22, from 4-6:30pm at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, where the show is currently broadcast. “It’s amazing that in an industry where longevity is often measured in months or years that we measure Pinky’s career on WOND in decades,” says Dave Coskey, president of Longport Media, WOND’s parent company. “Pinky’s career spans not only decades but generations — generations of listeners [who have all] spent time in ‘Pinky’s Corner.’ And his brand is even stronger today than it was in 1958.”

‘Don’t Tell the Driver’ (Anti-)

on’t Tell the Driver,, the first solo effort from Mick Turner (guitarist in the Australian trio Dirty Three) in six years was written and recorded over a fouryear stretch. Along with the expected watery, wandering and home-strewn instrumentals, this grand new album from Turner includes vocals (by Caroline Kennedy-McCraken and opera singer Oliver Mann) in addition to a band (made up of some fine Down Under musicians). Including bass, drums, melodica, brass instruments, Rhodes piano, vocals (on some tracks) and Turner’s characteristic hushed electric guitar lines and wobbly, snake-like melodies, the album is being pushed as a rock opera/concept album. But even on first listen, it’s clear that this is Turner’s most rewarding solo effort since 1999’s Marlan Rosa. The Drag City release (Turner’s return to the label that he first released solo albums on back in 1997) captures the sullen beauty of the human female voice with the appearances of Kennedy-McCracken’s other-worldly vocals. Mann’s baritone stands out in contrast in “Over Waves,” while the album’s striking horn arrangements loom throughout with a haunting counter-balance to the rest of the instruments. Meanwhile, Turner’s guitar, its strings plucked as if they were the voices of lost souls in a post-rock limbo, rolls about, over and over itself like a self-made ball of twine. In the nine-minute title cut, the voices break through the walls of sound with a confusion and uncertainty that carries the album’s 11 songs: “Tell the driver we’re going home,” goes the refrain, which continues: “No, no, no, don’t tell the driver — we’re going home.” — Jeff Schwachter
Love A.C. Music & Arts Festival By Josh Kinney
C
arrying on a tradition of re-inventing and revitalizing Atlantic City’s art scene, local artists, musicians and businesses are putting on a three night music and arts festival this weekend at Le Grand Fromage and the Boneyard. Both clubs, which are located back to back on Virginia Avenue and Gordon’s Alley (across from the Trump Taj), are hosting the “Love A.C. Music & Arts Festival” as a sequel to the live-music venues’ “Re-Do AC” show last winter. Admission is $10 per night and will go to help the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy and is still feeling the effects. The goal is to make the “Love AC” fest an annual event and to put a spotlight on the region’s many talented musicians and artists. The Elephant Talk Indie Music magazine / blog (a site focusing on music and unsigned independent artists) is the main presenter of the festival, along with JP Entertainment. The other goal, according to the presenters, is to raise money for a local cause while gathering many of the creative forces in the area in one place for an “unforgettable” weekend. “See how cool these festivals can be if we all work together?” says Jerry Ryan, one of the event coordinators. Over 60 bands and artists will be showcasing their music between the two venues this weekend.” The shows are all ages each night up until 8pm; after that it’s 18 and up, 21 to drink. NIghtLife >> Cape May Brewing has expanded its operation twice since conceiving the idea to start a local brewery in 2010. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
W
B ER BUZZ
hile the adage “choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life” may not apply 100 percent to Cape May Brewing Company — the three founding members and now 10-person full-time staff had to work hard to get where they are — it is certainly about as close a fit as you’ll find. Ryan Krill and Chris Henke, college friends from Villanova U., and Ryan’s dad Bob Krill were all home brewers who saw the niche for a craft beer market in a part of southern New Jersey best known for its wineries. They started their company in a warehouse in the Cape May Airport with a single account and the capacity to brew about 50 gallons per batch. They expanded to a 150- and eventually a 500-gallon brewing capacity, and now have nearly 50 accounts throughout Cape May County. The Atlantic City Bottle Company on the Black Horse Pike (across from Surf Stadium) recently became their first Atlantic City client. “We started on a shoestring down in Cape May and started with one account,” says
Ryan Krill. “That was it, and we called ourselves a brewery. “We had been talking about expanding up into Atlantic City for some time. This past summer we capped ourselves at 40 accounts, and the reason was that we didn’t want to over-commit to our customers or potentially run dry. We also have a taproom here [opened in 2011, with as many as 12 craft beers on tap at any one time]. The previous summer, our first summer, there were times we actually ran out of beer at the brewery, meaning we had to tell our accounts that we couldn’t make a delivery or hang a sign on the taproom door that said ‘Out of Beer.’” Cape May’s Centennial IPA, competing against several India Pale Ales from across the country, won the Best IPA award at last year’s “Celebration of the Suds” beer festival in Atlantic City. Currently Cape May has about a dozen craft brews on tap including a Hefeweizen, Mop Man’s (Bob Krill’s nickname) Mop Water Five-Spiced Ale and their ultra-popular Devil’s Reach Belgian Strong Ale. “Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada have done a great job in getting people into this mindset of seasonal beers that come out once a quarter,” says Ryan Krill. “Because we’re relatively small, we are inclined to be very nimble, meaning we’re always coming out with new beers. Constantly. Like every two weeks we’ll come out with something new

and exciting. Our taproom is where we like to release those, and many of our accounts are really into the variety. “We allow all of our employees to design a beer. The latest creation is an Imperial Stout made with maple we’re calling Paul’s Bare Knuckle Imperial Stout. We also have a cranberry wheat made with local cranberries.” “They were really excited to be working with us,” says Atlantic City Bottle Company’s bar/restaurant manager Lenny Schafer. “We visited them back in May — me and Chef [Kevin Cronin] went down to the brewery and talked with them. Down here when you think of New Jersey brewing you typically think of Flying Fish [in Sommerdale, Camden County], up north it’s Carton and Kane — Cape May is still new to the game but they’ve been putting out some phenomenal products. We had a little Oktoberfest event where we did nothing but New Jersey beers. We had their IPA on draft for maybe six hours before it kicked, it was that popular.” “They wanted to work with us, they know we’re doing lots of craft beers and that’s our goal — to bring good craft beer to people along with good food and wine,” adds Cronin. “And the local beer nerds, once they realized we carried Cape May they were coming in saying ‘I don’t have to drive all the way down to Cape May to get it anymore?’ Nope, you can get it right here.” ■ see more online @

he magnificent renaissance at Atlantic City’s Golden Nugget since its transformation from a former Trump property has produced an additional benefit; multiple superior restaurants and several nationallyrespected brands. Which makes sense, since the Nugget’s parent company, Landry’s, is first and foremost expert restaurateurs. Our prior meals at the Chart House and Vic and Anthony’s — the latter of which we consider to be A.C.’s most-underrated steak house — have been nothing short of stellar. So, visiting their Italian outlet Grotto recently, we brought along lofty expectations. Our meal began with clams casino, seven pretty middle necks, layered with a savory blend of diced red and green peppers, bacon and cheese. This classic holds great nostalgic fondness for yours truly, as it was one of the first dishes we ever learned how to prepare and cook, at the tender age of six. We are happy to report that Grotto’s version did nothing to tarnish those childhood culinary memories. The bivalves were moist and fresh, locallysourced and tasting of the briny ocean plus a gentle dose of butter and garlic. Each ingredient, portioned properly, allowed sampling of the entire entourage in a single, delightful bite and slurp. Simple, but spectacular. Calamari toto, one of the best local versions we’ve found of a fairly ubiquitous app, included a few fried shrimp and numerous chunks of crunchy-outside, creamy-within artichokes. The squid had not been uniformly cut — a positive sign of to-order prep — and were crisp, lively and possessing just the right
All elements in this fish dish revealed a singular ability to comfortably stretch beyond the bounds of standard Italian fare. amount of pleasant chew. Add-ons shrimp and artichoke provided pleasant counterpoints, like the soft harmony of a favorite song. From an impressive list of six salads, my dining partner and I split a chopped version called Ward. Bringing together a chiffonade of romaine and iceberg, spinach, hearts of palm, tomato and cucumber, it practically glowed an appealing shade of vivid green, so welcome on a cold November evening. We adore a good chopped salad, and this one was like consuming a delicious bowl of healthful energy. Seasoned exactingly to compliment those ingredients, a tangy vinaigrette added contrast and acid.
Entrees began with chicken penne diavolo. Riffing on the traditional hot Italian red sauce, Grotto’s take included unique elements mushrooms and peas, all topped with generous chunks of gooey, melting mozz. Penne and chicken, each in similarly plentiful quantities, filled the steaming bowl almost to overflowing. Next up was easily the most unusual item of our meal, snapper Siciliano: a beautifully butchered filet, probably close to 10 ounces, crusted with a blend of capellini pasta and jumbo lump crab. Thin shards of intertwined capellini clung atop, adding textural crunch while still allowing the snapper’s natural essence — one of

Grotto’s yummy desserts
the ocean’s sweetest fish — front-and-center attention. A bright, lovely Roma tomato and shrimp sauce finished this creative plating. All elements involved in this fish dish revealed a singular ability to comfortably stretch beyond the bounds of standard Italian fare. In fact, executive chef Keith Baskerville, an Atlantic City native, seems to have a feel and flair for Italian cuisine that few others may lay claim to. Even pizza from his kitchen — we sampled a sausage, artichoke, mushroom, garlic and roasted pepper combo called “Morty” — arrives thin, crisp, just a little smoky, not overly weighted by toppings nor cheese. In other words; it’s all about the crust, just as it should be. If you are going to label your restaurant “Cucina Napoletana,” which Grotto does, this shows an admirable degree of veracity. Desserts reflected that sense of commitment as well. My dining partner’s mezzanotte chocolate cake arrived a dense, intense slab of dark, rich cacao-infused sweet. But it was my strawberry crostada, which literally stole the show, an Everest-sized mountain of seven-layer angel food cake bound together via a sublime blend of ricotta and whipped cream. Like Italian-style cheesecake — utilizing ricotta rather than cream cheese of New York varieties — this was airy and light, loaded with thinly sliced berries and their sweet, red liquid. Just as its sister eateries in this nowrevitalized resort complex, Grotto succeeds on every level. ■

EVENT INFO You came out on stage with Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones in San Jose to sing “Let It Bleed.” That must have been amazing. It was wonderful. I’ve known [Jagger] since I was 19 and I hung out a lot with those guys over the years. We’ve opened for the Stones a few times and I was actually on their last DVD. It’s an honor to be included and a lot of fun. I’m such a big fan.
Breaks Through (Again) The redheaded singer-slide guitarist who once idolized and emulated blues legends is now one herself. She performs at Caesars Nov. 23 on tour in support of her Grammy-winning album ‘Slipstream.’ By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
I
You’ve had a career that has come full circle. You once idolized great blues artists like Fred McDowell and Sippie Wallace and now young artists like Adele and Bon Iver are covering your songs. How do you feel about that? My heart is warmed. I’m excited. I was very happy to have a new crop of fans coming to my concerts and more interest in my music whether it is shows like The Voice or American Idol that cover “Something to Talk About” or “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and I hear about it. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Adele, to have people of their caliber cover that song [“I Can’t Make You Love Me”] has been wonderful. To reach this point where Muddy and John Lee and Sippie Wallace were when I started out. You are at that point where you don’t have to look over your shoulder to see if your next record will be received well. I have a little bit of security and I thank my fans for that. Slipstream is a terrific album, earning a Grammy award for a newer category, Americana. It was great that they came up with that umbrella. People like to put music in little boxes. There is such a wide range that fits in Americana [roots, blues, folk].
You self-released Slipstream on your Redwing Records. What made you decide to start a record label? Was it a necessity because of the current record business? No, not at all. I had a lot of interest from some labels. For me, as a legacy artist who is established, the math works really well if you have the stomach and the staff to put together a great distribution, PR and management team. I have three wonderful women who are great at accounting, social media and my social activism side. Managing a label is very daunting task and those three are fantastic. In a climate that sells less CDs, it’s a good investment to have your own label. How comfortable are you with the way records are released and promoted with social media? It is certainly a great way to get the information out starting with the Web site. It’s a great way to communicate directly with fans and the fact that we can sell digitally is another reason for having our own label. Unfortunately, like bookstores, the mom and pop record stores are [nearly gone]. It’s just a reality of the business.
Will you be working on a new album after this tour? You took seven years between albums last time. With all the preparation before recording the album it has been a three-year cycle and I think I deserve a break. But I’ve definitely got some ideas in mind and I’m hunting for new songs. I haven’t really had any time at home in the last couple years. It will be nice to settle for a bit and unpack my suitcase and not repack it right away. You are well known for being passionate about various charitable and political causes over the years. What’s you current passion? Getting money out of politics. Whether you are left or right or the middle, I hope that is something we can all agree on going forward. It is just a travesty what has happened to what we call democracy. It is really an auction instead of an election these days. And clearly the energy and climate situation, whether it’s Hurricane Sandy or the fires out west, we [need] to keep pushing for safer alternatives to nuclear energy, coal and fracking. Those alternatives are available and we can bring the price down. The energy situation, the campaign reform and Wall Street reform, those are high on my list. ■ see more online @

“In a climate that sells less CDs, it’s a good investment to have your own label.”
With your early success in the Philadelphia region, you should have a great audience here in Atlantic City, not a typical casino crowd. We did almost 100 dates in the U.S. and we were two months Down Under and two months in the U.K. and Europe earlier this year. These 40 dates are really to pick up the fans that didn’t get a chance to see us last time. It’s a continuation of the Slipstream tour with a lot of songs from the new album and other songs from my previous catalog I switch around depending on how I’m feeling that night. Playing with Marc Cohn is such a treat. We did a lot of shows with him and with Mavis Staples last year. As for the casino audience verses regular venues, by the time the lights go down and I come out there on the stage I’m just grateful to have a heated venue with great lighting, a showroom with comfortable seats and great sight lines. With my fans there it just feels like another Bonnie Raitt concert.
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • NOVEMBER 21 - 27, 2013
n the late 1960s-early ’70s Bonnie Raitt was a young artist on the college/folk music circuit who idolized the African American blues legends whose music she emulated — people like Mississippi Fred McDowell, Sippie Wallace, Muddy Waters and Ruth Brown. Sometimes she opened for them in concert, all the while developing a distinctive blues, rock and pop style all her own. For many years that made Raitt a cult favorite with albums that included Give It Up, Takin’ My Time, Streetlights and Green Light. This was until a magical period in 1989 through the mid-1990s when Raitt became a bonafide star thanks to the commercial and multi-Grammy winning albums Nick of Time and Luck of the Draw and hit songs such as “Nick of Time,” “A Thing Called Love,” “Something to Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” In the years since, Raitt has continued to deliver critically acclaimed albums and become a beloved music icon for younger artists like Adele, Bon Iver and Katy Perry, who have all covered “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” In 2012 she released her first album in seven years, Slipstream, another gem featuring her still powerful vocals and dynamic bottleneck guitar picking. The final leg of her Slipstream tour stops at Caesars Atlantic City, Saturday, Nov. 23. Prior to that visit, Atlantic City Weekly had a chance to chat with Raitt.

Trop Rings in the Holidays The Tropicana’s Holiday Extravaganza is stunning in its set designs and team of talented singers and dancers. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

n established go-to guy for many of the most popular revue shows brought to Atlantic City over the years, producer Mario Bazinet returns to town with the Tropicana Holiday Extravaganza that runs on select dates through Dec. 20 at The Showroom. Fellow French-Canadian Richard Massicotte is production coordinator of the show, which segues from many of the more traditional Yuletide staples into more contemporary numbers like “The Prayer,” made popular in a duet by Celine Dion and Andrea Boccelli and sung in both English and Italian lyrics. Created by Bazinet expressly for the Tropicana, the show features two exceptionally talented female vocalists and a
male vocalist, a chorus of accomplished dancers and an aerialist who performs gymnastic maneuvers from a white tapestry suspended from the ceiling during a rendition of the song “Ave Maria.” “It starts with more classical holiday music then works its way into more modern material with beautiful singing and dancing,” says Massicotte of the approximately hour-long show. “And of course we’ll have a visit from a very special guest, Santa Claus. It’s a show the whole family will love from the grandkids up to great grandmom. When the curtain opens and the audience first sees the set, there are going to be many oohs and aahs.” The male lead vocalist opens the show with a rendition of “Most Wonderful Time
of the Year” accompanied by a contingent of seven female dancers in pink skirts and two male dancers in black suits. The stage backdrops and outfits of the dancers change constantly and all are magnificently designed. The male and female vocalists tend to alternate singing when not performing numbers together, teaming particularly well on songs like “White Christmas,” “All I Want for Christmas is You” (which incorporates two male dancers doing a sort of break-dance routine) and “Oh Holy Night,” which garnered a standing ovation from many members of the audience. “This elaborate production gives guests a reason to slow down from the holiday hustle and take the time to enjoy the

sights and sounds of the holiday season,” says Tropicana general manager Steve Callender. “There is something special for everyone of every age.” During the number “Let It Snow,” faux snowflakes fall from The Showroom’s ceiling, a la the Winter Wonderland/laserlight show display the Trop has again brought back to The Quarter’s Fiesta Plaza. The song “Frosty the Snowman” features a routine with two snowmen dancing with one of the female lead vocalists, and Santa makes his grand entrance during the song “Santa Claus Comes Tonight” and remains on stage with most of the cast through “Jingle, Jingle, Jingle [I am old Kris Kringle]” and an energized rendition of “Santa’s Gonna Rock and Roll.” One of the more ambitious numbers the singers perform is “Do They Know It’s Christmas [Feed the World],” the 1984 song originally done by the charity supergroup Band Aid that was assembled to raise money to fight famine in Africa. A team of female dancers donned in skimpy white tuxedoes, complete with matching top hats and white canes, do a high-kicking, aesthetically pleasing rendition of “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.” Other songs include “The Christmas Song,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland” and a medley to close out the show in which the performers beckon the crowd to stand up and dance along. ■

Thankfully Chandor decided that his character was interesting enough to engage us without any backstory. Perhaps the only necessary shortcut was having a face as well known as Redford’s at the helm. Because of his history, we are immediately on his side in a way that a lesser-known actor might not have accomplished. With Redford’s effective and quiet determination in facing the series of obstacles in his way, All Is Lost provides more drama than you might expect. Certainly it is a story that hasn’t been designed for the masses. It is a film that wants to explore a man’s confidence in his ability to survive, facing setbacks with skill and determination until reaching the moment then surrendering to death seems the logical choice. That is a film worth embracing. Redford’s now leathery exterior, well earned from his decades as an outdoorsman, is in such contrast to his once striking youthful good looks yet there is still beauty in that well worn face. Redford survived a different open ocean, the hazards of a life in the movies, and made his place on his own terms. Once thought of as just a movie star, a lightweight actor, he has spent decades earning respect with performances and directorial efforts that belied the notion that he was just another pretty face. The face is no longer pretty, making it much easier for us to see the talent that was there all along. n

atching Robert Redford facing the perils of being alone and lost at sea, one’s memories drift back to the 47-plus years he has been engaging us on the big screen. He began his career as a gorgeous golden boy (Barefoot in the Park), continued that phase as a major movie star (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Way We Were, The Great Gatsby, All the President’s Men), found his way behind the camera as an acclaimed director (Ordinary People, A River Runs Through It) and then passed along his knowledge by creating the Sundance Institute to mentor young filmmakers. Redford, now 77, is the only human being on screen in All Is Lost. Written and directed by J.C. Chandor, it is the director’s sophomore effort after making his screen debut with Margin Call, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Redford’s character (his name is never revealed), is alone in the Indian Ocean on a sailing yacht that has just been struck by a cargo container and is taking in water. Among other survival issues, the water damaged his radio leaving him without the means to call for help. The sea is calm and so is the man as he devises a plan to repair his vessel and the arduous task of pumping out the water by hand. You can’t help but admire his precision and wonder how you would handle these circumstances. You also can’t help but reference other movies about being alone — or alone with a tiger — at sea (Cast Away, Life of Pi,). While not a silent film, Redford barely makes a sound and the trick for the actor and filmmaker Chandor is to keep us engaged in this titanic, yet low key, struggle to literally stay afloat waiting for a ship to come along. There is the inevitable storm that shatters what progress had been made, and in a minor supporting role, the inevitable school of sharks swimming by. An awkward or insecure filmmaker might have relied on flashbacks to flesh out how a man in his seventies decided to have an adventure this fraught with peril.
