Hockey All-Stars Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers and Brad Richards of the New York Rangers, in partnership with Caesars Atlantic City, will present Operation Hat Trick, a charity hockey game that will take place at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 7pm. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Empire State Relief Fund, the New Jersey Hurricane Relief Fund and the American Red Cross, aiding New York and New Jersey families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Tickets range from $20-$100. Tickets can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office and all Ticketmaster locations. For more information visit the event Web site, facebook.com/ AtlanticCityHeroes. “The lives that have been touched by the devastation are people in our own communities and the communities of our fans,” says Hartnell. “To have the opportunity to be able to raise money for the relief effort by participating in this game is an honor and we are asking fans of the tri-state area to assist in anyway they can to help the communities and people affected.” Adds Richards, “We are all overwhelmed by the damage and destruction caused to our area by Hurricane Sandy and as professional hockey players, we wanted to come together to help those who were victimized by the storm.” Richards and Hartnell will each captain a team represented by several of their professional teammates as well as other notable legends from throughout the hockey world. Participants joining Richards and Hartnell, either on the ice or in support of “Operation Hat Trick,” include Bobby Ryan, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, James van Riemsdyk, Simon Gagne, Ville Leino, Daniel Carcillo, Steve Eminger, Jeff Halpern, Brian Boyle, Jody Shelley, John Carlson, Taylor Pyatt, Steve Downie, Wayne Simmonds and James Neal. With all the NHL fans in the region starving for hockey thanks to the lockout, there should be a big turnout for the event. — Lori Hoffman

Nominations Being Accepted for 2013 Top 40 Under 40 Atlantic City Weekly and the Greater Atlantic City Jaycees are again teaming up to pay tribute to the best and brightest young pillars of our community. The ninth annual Top 40 Under 40 event each year honors 40 contributors to the betterment of our region who are under the age of 40. If you have a deserving candidate in mind, nominations are being accepted now through Jan. 25, 2013, by going to acweekly.com/top40. Candidates can be community leaders, volunteers, entrepreneurs, professionals, executives or managers from either the private or public sectors who have not yet turned 40 years old. Once nominations are closed Jan. 25, a panel of judges (from Atlantic City Weekly and from the Jaycees) tallies the votes and determines the honorees. Bios and photos of each of the 40 selections will appear in a special edition of AC Weekly in March, and all honorees will be invited to what has become one of the hottest parties of the year, also, March 22, at MIXX at Borgata. For more information, see acweekly.com/top40 or e-mail editor@acweekly.com — Ray Schweibert

If Diamond Eyes was any indication of the direction Deftones were going, they’ve taken that concept and launched it into the stratosphere. This is, without question, the most mature and cohesive record the band has ever recorded. It’s a woven tapestry that takes the most stirring elements of the band’s previous work and breathes into it new life and urgency that begs to be listened to as a complete piece. The band’s influences are laid out for all to see on this record. Fans of My Vitriol, Duran Duran, Meshuggah and more will hear subtle nods throughout this record. The delicate way that the music swings between tender dreampop and soul-crushing hardcore is an exercise in perfect balance and restraint. That’s what makes Koi No Yokan such a sweeping triumph. It knows precisely when to hold back and when to let go entirely. Overall, this album is quite simply a masterpiece. If White Pony set the bar, Koi No Yokan has taken it to vertigo-inducing levels. For those who have been hungry for some metal with substance, look no further. This is the real deal. — Craig Billow

NIGHTLIFE

Melding Music Culture

A recently formed alliance called the Latin Connection Family has created a buzz by fusing more traditional nightlife tracks with velocity-gaining Latino vibes. By Ray Schweibert

O

N A TYPICAL FRIDAY OR Saturday night at Cuba Libre, hundreds of revelers can be seen dancing and partying behind a blend of high-energy Latin hits and more traditional top-40 sounds, eventually spilling into the Quarter at Tropicana shortly before the sun comes up. The force behind the fun is a team of DJs who sought not only to fill a void among a growing population of young Latino revelers, but to create a sort of cross-cultural mash-up that attracts partiers of all ethnicities. The group is called Latin Connection Family and was created by Brooklyn-born Ariel “DJ Decybals” Monzon, who now resides in suburban Philadelphia. It includes about a dozen members with club residencies in several metropolitan areas, each of whom brings special-guest performers to their respective gigs and acts as more of an “entertainment ambassador” than a typical DJ. Along with Atlantic City and Philadelphia, Latin Connection spans the areas of Baltimore/Washington D.C., the Lehigh Valley, New York City and parts of Virginia. They’ve also been hired for individual gigs, festivals and private parties up and down the East Coast, and as far south as Texas. “We’re more like a full-fledged nightlife company, not just a DJ crew,” says Monzon. “A lot of people don’t think of the Latin community being as big as it is, but consider that a large section of the casino industry are Latino service workers who like to go out and have fun. If you look at the Tropicana [Cuba Libre], we’re usually open to 4am with 500 people in there, and we retain a lot of people because we’re bilingual. If I play just Latin music in a traditional nightclub, the likelihood is a lot people would walk out, but if I mix 10 Spanish songs with 10 English songs, chances are you’re going to stay whether you’re Latin, black, white, Asian or whatever. We cater to so much variety.” Monzon is a lifelong music enthusiast who interned at Metropolis Studios in East Harlem, New York City — the producer of 106 & Park and other hit shows on the BET network. After meeting his future wife in NYC and moving to Lansdale, Pa., he rejoined the entertainment scene as DJ Decybals in late 2007 and was brought onboard in 2010 by the prestigious Bum Squad DJs — an international assemblage with a highly organized business model. “The Bum Squad is huge because, in the

DJ Decybals industry that we’re in, one of our main goals is to travel and explore different markets and create some kind of demand in different markets,” says Monzon. “When you start to travel to places like Atlanta, Orlando, Memphis, you start to realize that people live differently even though we’re in the same country. So what the Bums do is they give me a heads-up in other areas — what works in marketing, what things people like, what we can expect. “A lot of people kind of forget that DJs do other things than play music,” he says. “We have to come up with branding, marketing, public relations — there’s a lot of expectations, and the better we do on the business end of it, the better we do on the DJ side of it. What most people at a party or in a club audience sees is maybe 10 or 15 percent of what goes on overall.” Monzon essentially took elements of the Bum Squad’s successful business acumen and applied them to creating the Latin Connection Family. “I collectively got many of the best Latin DJs in the area and made sure of a couple of things — the most important thing is that they were born and raised here [in the U.S.],” says Monzon. “None of us are first generation. I was born in Brooklyn. Most of us are 25 or 30 years old and born in the United States, we just happen to have a second culture behind our American culture. All the DJs in the Latin Connection Family already have the connections in the English [speaking] market, so we started to bring in a little bit of the English influence [to our Latin shows]. “Once we switched up the music format, and started mixing things up and letting everybody know that we’re second- and third-generation Latinos, everybody just started coming out,” he adds. “We saw this coming and we’re well prepared to grow it for the next 10 or 15 years. This is a whole transition we’re living through.” n

OME EXTRA THINGS TO CHEW ON — besides turkey — this Thanksgiving: Erroneous media reports of the destruction of the Atlantic City Boardwalk during Hurricane Sandy had members of the entertainment community wondering if their future paychecks had been washed away along with the boards. Last week, during back-to-back interviews, Aerosmith bass player Tom Hamilton and The Moody Blues bassist John Lodge each expressed concern about the town where both bands will be performing over the next eight days. “Is it as bad as we’re hearing?” asked Hamilton, who expressed relief when he learned that TV and radio network news outlets along with major print media inaccurately reported Sandy’s destruction of the Boardwalk. Hamilton said he’d heard conflicting reports about what Sandy did (or didn’t) do to Atlantic City. But he also said there was never one word of discussion whether Aerosmith would be able to play its Friday (Nov. 23) night concert in Revel’s Ovation Hall. “They never said a word about canceling,” he said. Lodge, who’s been visiting Atlantic City with the Moody Blues for 30 years, was relieved to hear the Boardwalk was mostly intact, save a couple thousand feet of rickety boards in the Inlet section that was going to be replaced anyway. “Atlantic City always reminded me of Brighton [England],” Lodge told me. Brighton is a major coastal resort in the south of Great Britain and has a boardwalk similar to Atlantic City’s. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked on the [Atlantic City] Boardwalk,” he added. “I love getting up there and seeing the ocean. It would have been a tragedy to have lost [the Boardwalk].” Based on the media reports he’d seen out of Atlantic City, Lodge was concerned the entire Boardwalk had been washed away during the storm. “That’s how [the media] made it seem,” he said. Another longtime Atlantic City entertainer called me the day after Sandy rolled through. Tony Orlando, who had been following the storm from his home outside Branson, Mo, was worried about what he’d seen on television. “Thank God you answered. Are you OK?” he asked with obvious concern in his voice. “Is Atlantic City OK?” I told him not to believe everything he’d seen on TV and gave him the accurate story on how Atlantic City had weathered the storm. “That’s not what I was seeing; I was seeing the Boardwalk floating down the street,” he said. He was relieved when I told him the footage he’d seen was aired out of context and that 99 percent of the Boardwalk had escaped

the storm without damage. *** Hurricane Sandy’s flood waters had barely receded when word leaked out — and was then confirmed — that a massive Hurricane Sandy fundraising concert was being planned for Madison Square Garden on Dec. 12. The core lineup consists of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Jon Bon Jovi, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, The Who and Roger Waters, with more artists being added to the show on a daily basis. This isn’t the first time at the dance for the producers of the concert — Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, The Madison Square Garden Company and The Weinstein Company. It’s the same group that produced the start-studded Concert for New York City 11 years ago in the aftermath of 9-11. The MSG show — titled “12-12-12” — will also be televised, although channels where the show will be seen haven’t been announced. I received more than a few calls, e-mails and Facebook messages asking why the concert was being staged at Madison Square Garden and not at Boardwalk Hall. The prevailing thinking was that the show should be in Atlantic City to show the world that the Boardwalk was intact. While I agree that Atlantic City should have been considered, I also understand there’s an economic factor at play here. Madison Square Garden can seat about 20,000 for a concert. Boardwalk Hall’s concert capacity is about 12,000 — or about half the size of the Garden. Since the purpose of the show is to raise money for charities assisting in the hurricane relief effort, you want to raise as much as possible so you go with the bigger room. In spite of how we all embrace Boardwalk Hall as our venue, we need to realize that any event in MSG immediately gets put on the world stage. The more people who see it, the more money gets raised. A.C. is doing its part in the relief effort with Saturday’s “Operation Hat Trick” (see p. 6). And there’s still talk of doing some kind of fundraising concert in Atlantic City post “12-12-12,” but details are sketchy and the potential event is still largely theoretical. n

H

urricane Sandy may have caused substantial damage to local shore towns, but the super storm was unable to break the spirit of Sofia, the stunningly attractive Mediterranean restaurant at the corner of Amherst and Adams avenues in Margate that debuted in 2006. Located at what was perhaps the hardest hit area of Margate’s bay front dining and entertainment district, Sofia sustained damage to both the interior and exterior of the restaurant. Resiliently, sisters Sofia Papastamelos and Angela Diamantis, along with their contractors, worked around the clock to restore the wonderfully eclectic and Mediterranean-style restaurant to its former state. Fully functional and back to its normal hours of business since Friday, Nov. 16, Sofia is prepared to serve the community this holiday season and deliver the same ambiance, aromas and tastes of a European

costal villa that patrons have both enjoyed and missed. To learn more about the establishment’s dinner specials and upcoming events, including their Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner, please visit HYPERLINK “http://sofiaofmargate. com” \t “_blank” sofiaofmargate.com or call 609-822-9111. Sofia of Margate looks forward to welcoming the public back to their favorite seaside dining destination! — Christina Migioia

NCE AGAIN, GREETINGS AND salutations. Yep, that will be me waving to you folks from the ABC Channel 6 Thanksgiving Day Parade. I’m kicking it off at 8 in the morning, and as you know, the parade opens up the holiday season, so I extend to you, your family and loved ones good cheer, good tidings and a wish that you enjoy this holiday. To those who suffered heavily during the storm of the century, let’s hope that we can put this behind us and move forward, and let’s give thanks for the many blessings we have as Americans in this wonderful country of ours. Now, let’s ask the and “You Were Always on My Mind.” Geator. I went to Goretti and graduated in First I’ve got a great trivia question for ’59. Carmela Murphy was in my homeyou. Love the Murphy sisters. Carmela was a couple of years younger than I, and I really began dancing with her sister Mary first. And it wasn’t American Bandstand at that time, it was Bob Horn’s Bandstand. After Bob lost the show, the Murphy sisters, along with yours truly, never went on Dick’s show. I also dated her, but when I went on the road with Danny & the Juniors, we lost touch. Periodically she would come by and see me throughout the years. Last time I saw her, which was many years ago, she looked great, was happily married, and had kids.

No, you’re not going crazy. I’ve used many wonderful instrumentals throughout the years for backup around the commercials, promos, or just the Geator Rap. “Firewater” is definitely one of them. Help! I am going crazy. I remember back in the ’60s listening to you on the radio and I can hear your theme song in my head, but no one knows what I am talking about when I say the name was “Firewater.” I remember having this on a red label 45.

The Taj Mahal’s newest dining addition, Robert’s Steakhouse, is destined to take its place among the city’s best. By Frank Gabriel

TLANTIC CITY’S STEAK HOUSE marketplace is as crowded and competitive as any dining category to be found anywhere. With headline names like Old Homestead, Morton’s, Ruth’s Chris and Bobby Flay, it’s a fast track of real industry players. Which makes the auspicious debut of our latest entry — Trump Taj Mahal’s glossy New York City transplant Robert’s — all the more attention grabbing. We visited twice during their opening week and went away marveling at both the lusty cuisine, directed by executive chef Will Savarese, as well as the staff’s exemplary level of white-glove service. Robert’s physical space, carved from part of a former high-rollers club, is masculine and mirror-filled, creating the illusion of a larger room. It’s warm and inviting, without a hint of pretension, a real food lover’s enterprise. We began our review meal with oysters, specifically six West Coast Kumamoto varietals. Clean, fresh and icy-cold, they arrived sided by a superb mignonette, thick cocktail sauce and grated horseradish. The bivalves themselves were expertly shucked — no small feat considering their deep cup-like shells — and loaded with briny aquatic taste. House signature Robert’s salad delivered a creative twist on the Italian standard cold seafood salad so popular in the metropolis to our north. This featured a half-dozen whole steamed shrimp plus a small lobster tail, presented standing up for full dramatic effect. Blended with these oceanic proteins were thin, tender green beans — haricots verts to the French — along with tomatoes plus a surprise guest star, diced mango. That tropical fruit was also utilized in the dressing, complimenting the sexy seafood. We’ve said it before and it bears repeating: make a dish your specialty and it better be just that. This heaping plate lives up to that axiom. But even a simple salad of mixed baby greens was an elevated creation. Fresh herbs — we noticed parsley, basil and chives and were informed by Savarese of tarragon

New at the Taj: A classy NYC import and celery greens — along with an assertive shallot vinaigrette added depth to these leafy vegetables. My dining partner’s main, one of four seafood entrees, was seared sea scallops. A trio of large, pearly white day boat quality mollusks were perfumed by citrus and prettily plated surrounding baby carrots. The scallops were nicely caramelized, but still creamy and dense in their middles. Robert’s selection of beef includes filets — in eight- or 12-ounce portions — plus New York strip, rib eye, porterhouse and Gold Label Kobe strip steaks. All are dry aged inhouse for upwards of 30 days, making this one of very few establishments regionally to provide this sort of spa treatment for gourmet meat. And it shows, my choice, boneless rib eye, probably topped out at close to 20 ounces of

hefty beef. This is despite that aging process, which inevitably results in weight loss via evaporation. The major upside to that aging, however, is an unbelievably intense concentration of flavor, which manifests. Those glorious results were readily evident from my first bites — this steak was nothing short of spectacular. Ordered and delivered at a perfectly pink rare, the rich, fatty cut also possessed an aweinspiring, no-knife-required, buttery texture. After a few thick, initial cuts, we contented ourselves with shaving the succulent beef razor-thin, then sampling it doused with a thoughtfully provided quartet of sauces. Our favorites were a timeless green peppercorn au poivre and a lighter-than-air bernaise, fragrant with just a hint of licorice from thin strands of tarragon.

Savarese, whose resumé reads like a directory of New York’s iconic restaurants — La Cote Basque, Aureole and Le Cirque among them — was similarly kind enough to supply us numerous sides. Creamed spinach ate more like a classic souffle, elegant and dreamy without an abundance of heavy dairy influence. Sauteed mushrooms, an ideal compliment to any steak, brought crimini, shiitake, oyster and royal trumpets, all wilted soft but not rendered dry. “Everything” fries were the potato equivalent of heaven — seasoned with coarse salt and pepper, garlic and sesame seeds. A smoked paprika aioli for dipping added another level of silken indulgence. Another defining element at Robert’s is their encyclopedic compendium of desserts, ably constructed by pastry chef Bruce Connell. Jr. Topping out at more than a dozen once sorbets, ice creams and gelatos were considered, this array of sweets makes Robert’s stand out among all local restaurants, not just those of the steak house genre. Highlights began with another signature, Robert’s Melt Down. A soft chocolate chip cookie, baked atop a mudslide brownie, is then finished with a decadent scoop of Maker’s Mark (bourbon) ice cream. Equally delightful was a chocolate hazelnut bomb, accompanied by spiced Marsala oranges and crisp chocolate tuile. The dome of semi-sweet cocao paired smoothly with the tangy fruit and crunchy nuts. A trio of frozen delicacies — black Mission fig sorbet, dulce de leche ice cream and a stunning, Sicilian pistachio gelato — further demonstrated Connell’s remarkable culinary skill set. What we might like best of all about Robert’s is its positioning within the massive Taj property. Situated next door to the lovely Il Mulino and Trattoria Il Mulino, they together serve to fashion a sort of mini New York restaurant row. Which only makes sense in a building bearing the Trump name on its doors. n

An extensive menu at both locations allows for numerous dining options, including veal, seafood, chicken, and pasta dishes, all served with the freshest ingredients. Lighter fare is available as well, including specialty sandwiches and wraps, while vegetarian and gluten free choices are also highlights on the menu. The delicious brick oven pizzas are favorites amongst regulars, while also enticing new visitors to explore all that JoJo’s has to

S

INGER-COMEDIAN DON Coulombe created the stage name “Don Who?” in response to people who couldn’t pronounce his French last name and it has worked for him since 1988. Before beginning his own variety show, he was the drummer, singer and composer for the New England based band Fox. He is also a regular performer in the popular Las Vegas show V: The Ultimate Variety Show. Originally from the White Mountains in New Hampshire, naming his holiday-themed show after his home region was a natural fit. Now, Coulombe has brought his show Christmas From the White Mountains to Resorts. In an interview with Atlantic City Weekly he talked about his show and his reaction to the news reports post-Sandy.

Review: ‘Christmas From the White Mountains’

Don Who? in town for holiday show at Resorts but as far as being hired to do a sevenweek stretch, this is the first time for that length of time. How did you start doing musical impressions? I started performing at 12 with my brother and I had a show band for many years [Fox]. Then back in 1988 I started doing the Don Who? Show. Playing in a band all those years, you have to copy other artists so I got pretty good at doing impressions. I do a lot of comedy in my show and I think my comedy is stronger than my impressions. Why did you come up with the stage name ‘Don Who?’ My real name is Don Coulombe [pronounced Coo-Lo]. I used to own a resort in the White Mountains and I’d greet

It’s a newer Christmas song. I I love Atlantic City. My wife and I have more people wanting to buy my come down here often. I’ve done private shows at the Hilton [now Atlantic Club] CDs because of that particular song.

Essentially a one-man show enhanced with video footage and pre-recorded music, Don Who? has such a likable, low-key stage presence he pulls off the task of keeping everyone attentive and entertained. You almost feel like you are in his living room, where he just happens to have a bar with a cutout of Dean Martin. Don Who? goes from a funny story or joke into a musical impression to a bit with the audience. With his pleasant timbre and crooner style, his Dean Martin is excellent (“Volare,” “Let It Snow”) and the vocals are also solid for his Elvis — although with only the cape and sunglasses as props, he looks more like a singing Dracula while doing “Hound Dog.” The Christmas music ranges from the ridiculous (“Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”) to the sublime (“The Christmas Song”) with other favorites like “White Christmas,” Elvis’ “Blue Christmas” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” If you’re looking for a major production, this show is not for you, but if you’re in the mood for holiday sounds with a solid professional at the helm, Christmas in the White Mountains Featuring Don Who? fits the bill. n

Aerosmith Dreams On (and On) The band’s Global Warming Tour with Cheap Trick flies into Revel’s Ovation Hall for post-Thanksgiving show. By Ed Condran

Steven Tyler (center) is back in the saddle again

NOVEMBER 22 - 28, 2012 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

T

HE FUTURE WAS UNCERTAIN FOR Aerosmith three years ago. It appeared that the band and vocalist Steven Tyler were moving in two different directions. Tyler spoke about moving on and guitarist Joe Perry called him on it during an interview. Perry said that the band could replace Tyler as it was marking its 40th anniversary. “It was something that we really talked about doing,” Perry tells Atlantic City Weekly. “We didn’t know what he was planning to do. We acknowledged that we had a great band. We said, ‘So we have this band and we’re not going to do it anymore?’ I would have been fine doing the project [without Tyler]. It would have been quite exciting, but we never got that far and we’re still Aerosmith, which is where I would rather be.” Despite the friction between the band and Tyler, who served as an American Idol judge for two seasons until he quit the Fox reality show in July, Perry called the period “a blessing in disguise.” “It all worked out since we realized that

[Guitarist] Brad [Whitford] threw in. [Drummer] Joey (Kramer) had a song from years ago.” Tyler believes that the communal effort

helped bring the band together. Over recent Aerosmith projects, Tyler had written songs with such guns for hire as Diane Warren and Richie Supa. “Everybody was on fire with the fact that we were doing this together,” Tyler says. “We got the feeling like we’re an old family and we’re suddenly together.” The collaboration worked as the group came up with familiar sonics. “It sounds like Aerosmith,” Perry says. “For every ballad on the album there is a kick-ass rock song.” That’s been the Aerosmith formula since the band made a remarkable commercial comeback with 1987’s multi-platinum smash Permanent Vacation. After stumbling through the early ’80s in a drug-induced haze and plenty of internal issues, Aerosmith proved to be incredibly resilient and became more

popular releasing the pretty “Angel” next to the rave-up “Dude Looks Like a Lady.” “We proved that we could take a punch and get back,” Perry says. “We’ve been able to weather storms and get back to where we need to be. We do what we have to do to be the best that we can be.” That’s part of the reason Aerosmith is the most successful American rock band of all time. The band has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide. Aerosmith has 21 songs that have hit Billboard’s Top 40. Speaking of the Billboard charts, the band’s new album clocked in at No, 5 on the album charts in its opening week. There are a number of strong tracks on the album. Expect some of the new tunes to be showcased in Atlantic City. “We’ll do four songs,” Tyler says. “We’re hoping to do ‘Freedom Fighter’ and ‘Oh Yeah.’ We’ll do ‘Legendary Child’ and ‘What Could Have Been Love.’” Don’t be surprised if the band comes back with some more chart-toppers. But it’s not just about the hits, it’s the respect the band has garnered with such influential albums as Toys in the Attic and Rocks, which had a huge impact on members of Metallica and Guns ‘N’ Roses during the ’70s. “It’s been an amazing run over these 40-plus years,” Perry says. “We really have had it all. We’ve written so many songs.” So many that it’s not easy to write a concert set list, particularly with a new album out. “It’s not a breeze to put that list together but we do our best,” Perry says. “We play the new, but we also go back to the earlier days. It’s a lot of ground to cover. It’s a lot to figure out when making a set list, but it’s a good problem to have. It’s something I would like to figure out for many years to come.” Don’t be surprised if Aerosmith is around for many more years; according to Perry and Tyler the band is getting along famously once again. “We’re having a lot of fun with each other,” Perry says. “There [has] been a lot of laughs and a lot less tension. “But we’ve been at this for a long time. There [are] cycles with everything. We’re in a good cycle right now and we’re just going to enjoy it by making music and putting on shows [like only] Aerosmith can.” n

Moscow Ballet’s ‘Great Russian Nutcracker’

Where: Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City When: Thursday, Nov. 29 to Sunday, Dec. 2 (9pm), with an additional 2pm show on Sunday How Much: $26, $41, and $56.

As you travel from city to city, your daughter, Polina, comes with you sometimes. Is she interested in dance? She does a few different things. She loves to draw. She really loves going to school. She just entered the third grade and she is very proud. She feels like she’s an adult (laughs). She plays the piano, so I think that is enough for now. It’s a tough life to be a ballerina; you travel a lot, every day you have to go from airplane to airplane, packing your suitcase. All the time on the road, it can be a little overwhelming. She’s only seven.

The Moscow Ballet comes to Harrah’s Resort

HE WORLD-RENOWNED MOSCOW Ballet pirouettes into Atlantic City on Thursday, Nov. 29, as it celebrates its 20th anniversary production of the Christmas classic, the Great Russian Nutcracker, at Harrah’s Resort. Over the past 20 years, the Great Russian Nutcracker has introduced some of the world’s most talented dancers to audiences across the globe. Among those accomplished performers is Moscow Ballet audition director and soloist, Svetlana Todinova. The Russian native, who completed formal ballet training at the prestigious Ufimsky Choreography School in 1997, now named the Rudolph Nureyev Russian State Ballet Academy after the legendary graduate, has been with the Moscow Ballet since 2001, and a soloist since 2006. Actively involved with Moscow Ballet’s Children’s Program, “New Horizons,” Todinova juggles her roles of mother, dancer, teacher and humanitarian with a smile on her face, her delightful demeanor contagious. Always on the go, Todinova took some time out of her busy schedule for a phone interview with Atlantic City Weekly. Between the months of September and November you travel to over 20 U.S. cities auditioning and training dancers as audition director for the Moscow Ballet. In your various travels have you come to Atlantic City before? Yes, I’ve been there before. It is a beautiful city, I really like it. I do love water, although I’m not a fan of swimming (laughs). But yes, I love the city because the beach is so very beautiful. You also do a lot of traveling to work with

children. Yes, I love it. Usually I come around two months before everybody else comes and I teach the kids dancing, some of them eventually dance with us, I audition them, and then I also do rehearsals with them. In regards to your work with children, you were recently in Las Vegas for the Children’s Miracle Network with Donny and Marie Osmond. What was that like? It was a nice experience. We had a good time. Donny and Marie are beautiful people. They are so very kind, and it’s very simple to talk with them. It was so easy to talk. We took pictures together, we had dinner — they are such nice people. They were really, really interested in the ballet, and they asked me so many questions about ballet, how I was trained. And of course, they invited me to their show, [which] was just beautiful. They are not very well known in Russia, but I really, really enjoyed their show.

This is the 20th anniversary of the Great Russian Nutcracker, are there any new things we can look for this year in the show? Yes, yes. There are a few new things that make our ballet a little bit different than last year. We have two beautiful, beautiful dancers Sergey (Chumakov) and Elena (Petrachenko), and they will be dancing an Arabian dance. It is breathtaking watching them; they are such a stunning couple. Also, two people will be dancing the Dove of Peace, which is a beautiful, beautiful new costume with a 20-foot wingspan. We also have two folk characters, Father Christmas and the Snow Maiden, who escort Masha to the Land of Peace. And such beautiful costumes — 200 new costumes, nine hand-painted backdrops, all hand-made in Russia.

In addition to the Great Russian Nutcracker, you have such an expansive repertory that includes Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Carmen and more. Do you have one that is your favorite to perform? I do love Romeo and Juliet. We danced it last year in Canada and the U.S., about 20 shows. I just love the music by Tchaikovsky; it’s such a beautiful ballet. A really sad story, You’ve been a dancer for such a large part but I love it. of your life, how did you initially become interWhat is it that you love the most about what ested in ballet? you do? I was nine. In Russia you have to be When the show ends, and the audience nine to go to enter ballet school, no older [than] nine. I came to the audition with my is standing up and keeps applauding, you cousin because he started to dance when he can see their faces; there are smiles on their was five; he was dreaming to be a dancer, a faces. And you just enjoy it because they very good professional dancer. I came along enjoyed your show. They are smiling, they with him just for fun. While I was waiting want autographs. I feel like a star. And also, for him, one famous ballerina asked what I love to teach kids. I enjoy that part of my I was doing there, and to just come on in job so much. Also the ballet keeps you in and try something with my cousin. Just like shape! That is another important thing for that I was accepted! me; it keeps me young always. n

Sexual Healing

Likely lost in the shadow of the final Twilight film, The Sessions also opened this past week and is worth a trip to the multi-plex. The amazing John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone) stars as a man confined to an iron lung who doesn’t want to die a virgin and hires a sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) to accomplish that goal. Written and directed by Ben Lewin, this tale, based on a true story, is tender and touching, full of humor and heart, and features likely Oscar-nominated performances by Hawkes and Hunt. n

They see Renesmee as a particular type of vampire threat, and plan to wield their power to prevent that threat from coming to fruition. The Cullens prepare for the final showdown by encouraging the other clans to support their belief that Renesmee is special and not in a way that threatens the vampire kingdom. This allows us the opportunity to meet the cool Amazon women vampires, and a couple of classic Dracula-style bloodsuckers from Romania. The twist that had Twihards in an uproar has imprinted on my film critic’s psyche in a good way, so that while I have trashed the series in the past for good reason, my final impression is favorable. To the Twihards out there, I hope you find cinematic passions to embrace in the future.

WIHARDS, DON’T RIP MY HEAD off for saying this, but I enjoyed your reaction to the final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn, Part II, more than the actual movie. Director Bill Condon and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg concocted a scary little plot twist to freak out Twihards during the final Cullen family feud with the icy Volturi. This twist turned the theater into a talk-back-at-the-screen audience participation event. Distressed fans were yelling at the screen at each disturbing moment, literally moaning as they saw their beloved characters overwhelmed by the bad guys and in turn cheering when vengeance was earned. Twihards, I salute you for your passion; as a lifelong film fanatic, it is a passion I have been lucky enough to channel into the workplace as a film critic for the past 37 years. Now back to the “job” part. Breaking Dawn Part II stretches the credibility of the Twilight universe with an ambience of designed absurdity on top of the obviously planned laughs. There is plenty of fun to be had in the final chapter, a necessary change since the whole intense Bella, Edward and Jacob romantic triangle has been long settled. Seeing Bella (Kristen Stewart) enjoying her vampire gifts under the amused, watchful eye of Edward (Robert Pattinson) and exploring her power, while learning to control her thirst for blood, makes for an enjoyable opening portion of the film. That Bella isn’t cool about Jacob’s (Taylor Lautner) romantic imprinting on her newborn Renesmee (played by Mackenzie Foy after an impressive hybrid baby growth spurt), is a nice comic aside but Bella is right, it is also creepy. Meanwhile, those haughty Volturi vamps, led by Aro (Michael Sheen), just can’t leave the Cullen clan in peace.
