Internet Gambling Gets Go-Ahead in A.C. By Ray Schweibert

n what has been called the largest expansion of New Jersey’s gambling industry since the arrival of casinos in the late 1970s, Internet gambling got underway in Atlantic City as of midnight Tuesday, Nov. 26. Following a trial period of about four days to ensure Web site components passed muster with the N.J. Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) — things like verifying that gamblers are physically within New Jersey’s borders (done through global positioning systems that each player must install by app in their computers), that they can provide proof of legal age, and that electronic payment technology is functioning properly — six of the seven A.C. casinos granted permits were deemed ready to proceed. Those casinos and their Web site operators include Borgata (bwinparty.com), Bally’s (888holdingsplc.com), Caesars (amayagaming.com), Trump Plaza (betfair.com), and Trump Taj Mahal (ultimategaming.com). The seventh, Golden Nugget, has opted to wait about another week to work the kinks out of its system. All 12 A.C. casinos eventually intend to offer online gambling, and each can operate up to five gambling Web sites. According to a release from the director of the NJDGE, David Rebuck, about 10,000 players registered on currently 13 active Web sites. New Jersey became the third state to allow Internet gambling, joining Delaware and Nevada. In the cases of N.J. and Delaware, each offers most of the same games online as in its casinos, while Nevada currently limits its online gambling to poker only. As well as bolstering existing clientele through the Internet, each Atlantic City casino intends to cross-market and cross-promote online to bring more clientele to its brick-and-mortar buildings through comps and incentives. In related news from the office of State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, the senator who sponsored the original bill to allow online gambling in N.J. (passed by the N.J. Legislature in 2011; revised and approved by Gov. Chris Christie in Feb. 2013 after he initially vetoed it) — a new bill was proposed to authorize the NJDGE to provide Internet gambling licenses to overseas countries to operate through A.C.’s online-gambling superstructure. “New Jersey’s casino industry is well regulated and highly respected, which gives us an advantage,” says Lesniak. “We can capitalize on our strengths and attract business to build and invest in our state … New Jersey’s Internet gaming law will be a real boost to the state, Atlantic City and the casino industry. International online gaming will provide even more opportunities, more jobs and more growth. We need to lay the foundation now.”

Do ACB for the Holidays By Kaitlin Montague

T

he Atlantic City Ballet is preparing for the Christmas season in more ways than one, after a busy fall. The ABC began working on their brand new holiday ballet It’s A Shore Holiday (Trump Taj Mahal, Dec. 7), which is set to everyone’s favorite holiday tunes combined with both classical and contemporary dance, live music and singers. To pair with the new holiday ballet is the holiday classic The Nutcracker (Stockton PAC, Dec. 13-14). The Nutcracker is an annual holiday event that has been in the repertoire since 1982, choreographed by ACB founder Phyllis Papa. The production will travel to colleges and casinos over the next few weeks. The Nutcracker is a family tradition that embodies the holiday spirit and remains as the most well attended ballet in history. With the busiest season of the year underway, ACB continues to ready itself for its Spring 2014 season.

irst released as a two-CD set in the colossal 47-CD Bob Dylan: The Complete Album Collection, Vol. 1 on Nov. 5, Side Tracks is being released as a numbered limited-edition three-LP set (200 gram vinyl) exclusively for the annual Black Friday version of Record Store Day. The rarities compilation — only available at independent record stores — contains a collection of tracks from throughout Dylan’s monumental 50-year career that have not appeared on any formal Dylan album. The career-spanning collection, however, includes songs — some of them, such as “Caribbean Wind,” “Abandoned Love,” “Things Have Changed” and “Up to Me,” among his most compelling works — previously released on 1985’s box set Biograph and other compilations, as well as non-album singles, live tracks, songs from films, alternate takes and demo versions. Mainly for Dylan completists, the 200 gram vinyl edition of Side Tracks is a spiffy collection of some of Dylan’s greatest non-album tracks, which sound a heck of a lot better than they do on CD or old, scratched up vinyl. The demo version of “Forever Young” alone is worth the price. — Jeff Schwachter

21st Annual Winter Poetry and Prose Writing Seminar By Kaitlin Montague

T

he Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, in partnership with Murphy Writing Seminars and veteran writer and educator Peter Murphy, will present the 21st Annual Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway at the Stockton Seaview Hotel in Galloway from Jan. 17-20, 2014. Two individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 will be sponsored by the Jan-ai Scholarship Fund in order to attend the four-day retreat and intensive writing conference. The recipients will have the opportunity to chose from 17 different workshop categories in novel, memoir, children’s market, creative nonfiction, poetry, song writing and more. “The Jan-ai Scholarship Fund commemorates the life and untimely death of young writer, poet and photographer, Jennifer Cakert [1980-2006],” says conference director Murphy, of Ventnor. “She was an unusually talented young woman.” Previous winners include writers from the tri-state area, including Christopher Moore and Meghan Privitello, of Ventnor; Rachel Bunting, of Lumberton, who has gone on to receive a fellowship at the Norman Mailer Writers Colony; Cate Stevens-Davis, from Pittsburgh, Pa., who has since published a book of short stories; and Emma Eisenberg, from New York City, who is now a second year student in the University of Virginia’s MFA program in creative writing. Guest appearances will be made by Stockton’s own Stephen Dunn, Pulitizer Prize winner for poetry, and Tony Hoagland, poet and writer. The deadline to apply for the Writers Conference scholarship is Nov. 30. To learn more and apply online visit wintergetaway.com. see more online @

Borgata’s two nightclubs have stayed relevant among the late-night revelers by always keeping on the cutting edge and bringing in top talent. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

ingering too long in the fickle nightlife industry can often prove fatal without tweaking one’s design and reconfiguring one’s image once in a while. Club-goers like to be shaken up with new sights, sounds and exciting new options occasionally to avoid feeling stuck in a time warp, and nobody knows that better than Borgata. “It is extremely important that Borgata continue to offer a fresh and innovative product, whether that involves periodically renovating and remodeling our club space, introducing a loyalty program targeted specifically towards our nightlife customer [called Borgata Nightlife Rewards], or featuring an incredible array of new and established talent on a nightly basis,” says Joe Lupo, Borgata’s senior vice president of operations. “There is a standard of great service and sensual style that our customers have come to expect from Borgata. “When Borgata opened in 2003 we introduced the Atlantic City market to a Las Vegas-style destination on the East Coast,” adds Lupo. “With the debut of two uniquely distinct world-class nightlife venues in MIXX and mur.mur, we worked to position ourselves as the preeminent entertainment and nightlife option in the city, effectively raising the bar for party-goers throughout the region.” MIXX, one of the Borgata’s original residents dating back to 2003, and its subterranean sister mur.mur that materialized three

years later, were always forerunners on the late-night weekend club scene and never really lost that luster. Nonetheless, since seven is a lucky number in the world of wagering (or possibly just by sheer coincidence), both clubs underwent total, spectacular makeovers seven years after their arrivals — MIXX in 2010 and mur.mur earlier this year in tandem with Borgata’s 10th anniversary celebration. Renovations to the multi-leveled MIXX in 2010 included a huge LED screen over a relocated DJ booth directly connected to a new hardwood dance floor, allowing for more intimate contact with guests. Mur.mur, part of a $200 million casino expansion project in 2010, was modified in 2013 with a brand new color scheme and upgrades to its carpeting, drapery and lighting, and an elongated dance floor — flanked on each end by bars and adjoined by personalized VIP table service — that was also subject to a significant transformation. “Aside from the differences aesthetically that both clubs present, each has its own unique personality,” says Lupo. “Mur.mur offers a more intimate nightlife experience with signature bottle service and an infectious energy, orchestrated by celebrity guest DJs like Samantha Ronson, Vice, Ruckus, D Nice, and Jesse Marco. MIXX is our larger, bi-level concept with a sensual, city-inspired party vibe and dance club experience, including unique nightlife performances and afterparties to major concerts at Borgata.

“It is not uncommon to see one or both of our DJs such as Steve Aoki, Vice and Lil Jon perform at both MIXX and mur.mur in a night,” adds Lupo. “We are always working on innovative promotions to speak to our nightlife customers at both venues. For example, throughout the month of November we’ve offered party-goers at MIXX Sundays and mur.mur Mondays the opportunity to win a pair of tickets to some of the hottest concerts of the year, including Kanye West, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke.” Ronson, who co-hosted MIXX’s grand reopening party in 2010 with singer/songwriter/guitarist Orianthi (currently Alice Cooper’s lead guitarist and formerly a touring guitarist for the late Michael Jackson), performs at mur. mur this Saturday, Nov. 30, starting 10pm. “Borgata is an amazing entertainment and nightlife destination, and mur.mur is one of my favorite places play,” Ronson said just prior the MIXX grand reopening [on June 26, 2010]. “I could not be more happy to DJ alongside such amazing talent and pull together another incredible night sure to go down in Borgata nightlife history.” ■ see more online @

Voting Open in 2014 Nightlife Awards On Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014 Atlantic City Weekly and ACWeekly.com will present the sixth annual Atlantic City Weekly Readers’ Choice Nightlife Awards, celebrating the best in nightlife that the Atlantic City region has to offer. The award ceremony, party and after party will once again be held at Boogie Nights at the Tropicana. Doors open to the public at 7pm. Voting is now open at acweekly.com/ nightlife-awards. You can cast your votes in more than two-dozen categories for the Atlantic City region’s “best” in area nightlife — with venues and entertainers from Atlantic County and upper Cape May County eligible to be honored. Cateogies include “Best Nightclub,” “Best

Happy Hour,” “Best New Place to Party,” “Best Casino Lounge Act,” “Best Local’s Bar,” “Best Club to Find Celebrities,” “Best Local Band” and more. Every year since 2009, the best in Atlantic City region’s nightlife industry have been honored by the readers of Atlantic City Weekly and ACWeekly.com. Voting will conclude on Dec. 31, 2013, with thousands of entries again expected. The 2014 awards show celebration bash is guaranteed to be a night full of fun and surprises. This year’s celebration will involve an afterparty, new guest celebrities and a variety of surprises throughout the night. “Coming off of last year’s big fifth anniversary of the Nightlife Awards, we are very excited about the 2014 awards and the big bash at Boogie Nights,” says Atlantic City Weekly editor Jeff Schwachter. “This project was created to celebrate and bring together those who work so diligently — behind the scenes in many cases — in the Atlantic City region’s rich and diverse nightlife industry. The awards celebrate the men and women who help make Atlantic City the unique, high-energy entertainment destination that it is. “That the project has grown and evolved over the years speaks to how much of a positive thing the Nightlife Awards has become for the Atlantic City region and its image. We are very proud to present these awards each year and thank all of our readers who have voted.”

Ironclad Innovator

The Iron Room

A small back-room restaurant component of the Atlantic City Bottle Company, The Iron Room has a New York City vibe, with some enticing, eccentric and fearless cuisine. By Frank Gabriel

ince opening in late summer 2013, the Atlantic City Bottle Company and its backroom “speakeasy” restaurant, The Iron Room, have quickly developed a following among food and beverage enthusiasts locally. Their business model is a combination of high-end boutique liquor store plus the attached eatery that features brilliantly eccentric new American small plates — something we feel Atlantic City desperately needs. Chef Kevin Cronin, an Ocean City High School alumnus, presides over the kitchen, crafting dining’s equivalent of small-batch brewing. His dance partner is Leonard Schafer, ACBC’s beverage guru. Formerly employed at Resorts’ bygone whiskey lounge called Torch, Schafer offers a complimentary array of superlative drink options, emphasizing single-barrel scotch, rye and bourbon. Plus a dash of British sci-fi icon Dr. Who … read on. A recent meal began with Kentucky fried frogs legs accompanied by thick, housemade sauce called Dantes smoky inferno. Yep, frogs legs. This will illustrate what we admire most about Cronin’s cuisine; it’s utterly fearless. In fact, ACBC is the only place we know of in a 50-or-so mile radius offering these delicious swamp denizens. For those of you who have never encountered frog legs, let us say there is good reason the French — the world’s most notoriously persnickety gourmets — so relish what they call “grenouilles” in their native tongue. Crunchy and without a hint of gaminess, three pieces were golden brown, expertly battered. Meaty and tender, they taste and look very much like handsome little chicken

drums. Now stop making that face and try them, we guarantee you’ll approve. Next, an old-school favorite — croquettes. Loaded with bacon and Serrano ham, four crisp little discs were steamy hot when cracked opened, accessorized by incendiary sriracha catsup. Ideal cold-weather fare, these hearty, deep-fried bundles and their daring dip warm from the inside out. Mushroom salad combined the world’s most obscure, expensive funghi — chanterelles, matsutake, shimeji, bluefoot and hen of the woods — topped with peppered, sunnyside egg. Beneath the mound of ‘shrooms, a reduction of balsamic and molasses offered just a hint of sweet, dancing merrily with the star ingredient’s natural earthiness. Easily this meal’s most visually striking plate, wild-caught, head-on East Coast shrimp, was finished via a persimmon prosecco sauce

and grated radish (pictured). Four colossal-size crustaceans arrived nicely coiled together, barely cooked until just beyond sashimi. Complete with savory heads, these oceanic monsters looked more like prized European langoustines than standard Atlantic coast shrimp. Their intense flavor, decidedly assertive, was accentuated with a liberal crust of coarse salt, adding just the right punch of seasoning. Our favorite item of the evening, housemade pappardelle, were tossed with brown butter. An ingenious, autumnal addition, pepitas — roasted pumpkin seeds — added crunch and a creamy, nutty essence. Soft ribbons of fresh pasta were further adorned with a dusting of Parmesan. Airy and supple, this is northern Italian cuisine at its very finest. Our only issue: wanting more, much more, of this ethereal preparation.

648 N. Albany Ave., Atlantic City 348-6400 acbottlecompany.com

Our final savory sampling, flat iron burger, is so named for the cooking technique, not cut of meat. The beef, however, is a juicy blend of certified grass-fed Angus served on a shiny Brioche roll trucked from the Hudson Bakery in New York’s Queens borough. Thick slabs of bacon, gruyere cheese — cheddar is also available — and housemade Belgian-style fries elevated this casual American classic. If you consider yourself a burger aficionado, as we do, this is a hallowed experience. We enjoyed a pair of desserts; one a common item well executed and the other a coloring-outside-the-lines Cronin creation. First crème brulee, creamy and pictureperfect; the other, sweet potato funnel cake, which reiterated this kitchen’s willingness to take risks. Our reward was a tangle of bright orange fried dough loaded with seasonal root vegetable complexity. Literally something we have never elsewhere seen. With a menu changing daily, Cronin indicates that he soon plans braised chicken thigh ravioli, rabbit muffuletta (a ‘Nawlins Italian classic defined by its olive salad condiment), and whole Atlantic fish, either sea bass, branzino or pompano but “as local as they catch from Maine down to Florida,” says Cronin. Guests at an upcoming Bellview wine dinner scheduled for Dec. 11, and under the direction of ACBC partner Paul Tonacci, should look forward to prized Kurobuta pork. Now about that Dr. Who mention. Schafer’s current list of specialty mixology includes a pair named for the good doctor, and one of his female allies, Amy Pond. Apropos for a place so ahead of its time. n see more online @

On the 10th ‘Year’ of Christmas ... The Brian Setzer Orchestra brings its ‘Christmas Rocks 10th Anniversary Tour’ to Caesars Nov. 30 By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

T

here’s never an off-season for Brian Setzer. The prolific veteran recording artist rarely takes time off.

But there is an off-season for Setzer’s

favorite sport, baseball. The national pastime is significant as Setzer’s retro swing music is inspired by — what else? — a swing. The latter swing is of the baseball-playing variety, which actually has a huge effect on the charismatic singersongwriter’s sonic swing. “I’ll be watching a baseball game for three hours, and then I’ll plunk around with the one of his Gretsch guitars. “I’ll come up with a little guitar riff.” That’s how it goes for Setzer, who is on his “Christmas Rocks, 10th Anniversary Tour.” “I’ve always enjoyed the Christmas shows and that goes for the fans as well,” Setzer says. “They always come out.” That’s no exaggeration. Sales are always brisk for Setzer’s holiday concerts. It’s always a blast of retro fun at a holiday Setzer show, which returns to Atlantic City on Saturday (Nov. 30) at Caesars. Setzer, 54, embraced swing music courtesy of his parents’ record collection, while coming of age in Long Island during the 1960s.

Fellow rocker Dave Edmunds discovered the Stray Cats and produced a few singles for the band, which found an audience in the United Kingdom and eventually America in the 1980s. It’s never easy for Setzer to compile a set list for his holiday shows as he chooses between Stray Cats cuts, Christmas classics and other material. “I’m really fortunate because there’s a lot to choose from,” Setzer says. “That’s a good thing. It’s fun no matter what we play. Sometimes I don’t think it matters what we do because people just want to come out and have a good time. What’s great is that this is good-time music. It was good-time music when I was a kid, and that’s something that hasn’t changed one bit. The people come out, and they love this style of music, and I can say the same thing for myself.”

“Kids tend to dig into what their parents are into,” Setzer says. “I loved that kind of music ever since I was small.” But unlike many others, who embraced other genres, Setzer refused to let go of swing or rockabilly. “I remember growing up, and so many kids were into Jethro Tull and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and I just couldn’t relate to them,” he says. “The lyrics to many of those songs just didn’t connect with me at all. No offense, but that’s not my thing. I found my thing and I’m just going to keep making that style of music.” It’s worked well so far. After arriving in London a generation ago hoping to kick off his career with the Stray Cats, the perpetually lean vocalist-guitarist has thrived whether with his on again/ off again band or his orchestra. “I have so much to be thankful for because when I got to London, it was all about punk,” Setzer says. “But we broke through.”

guitar,” Setzer explains while picking up

“I’ve always enjoyed the Christmas shows and that goes for the fans a well,” Setzer says. “They always come out.”

Setzer isn’t some one-trick pony. He might be looked upon as one dimensional by the myopic, but he’s enjoyed a varied career. He has hit with the Stray Cats, his orchestra and with his solo material. His latest of the latter, Setzer Goes InstruMental, is arguably the high-water mark of a very productive career. The 2011 release is surprisingly the only instrumental album he’s made. Yes, there’s rockabilly, but there’s also some bluegrass tossed in as well. “I really enjoyed making [that] album,” Setzer says. “It was a blast. I’m fortunate. I’ve had the opportunity to get to make the kind of music I want to make.” Setzer has also appeared in film and on television. He played himself in what is arguably the funniest episode of The Nanny, Story in which Fran The Bobbi Flekman Story, Drescher nods to her greatest role, playing metal publicist Bobbi Flekman in the hilarious mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. Setzer was also in La Bamba and in the lionized longtime animated series The Simpsons. “Who doesn’t want to be in The Simpsons?” Setzer asks. “That’s something that you can’t help but look back and laugh about.” When Setzer isn’t on the road, you might find him at the Metrodome watching his Minnesota Twins. “I love going to games,” Setzer says. “The fans are so good in Minnesota. I was at a Twins playoff game and it was late in the game and the Twins were coming back but I had to pee and I didn’t want to leave my seat but I had to and a fan said, ‘Sit down, Setzer, you don’t want to miss this.’ “I appreciate that sort of thing.” It’s the same sort of thing for fans, who catch Setzer’s shows. You don’t want to miss a minute of the high energy performance by Setzer and his orchestra. It’s not just the Christmas songs and Stray Cats tunes Setzer delivers. An audience may be treated to an off-the-wall television theme song from classic shows such as The Munsters, Peter Gunn and The Flintstones. Setzer is an all-around entertainer, who not surprisingly is a throwback, both sonically and the way he engages a crowd. It’s no wonder Setzer’s Christmas shows have been such a hot ticket for each of the 10 years it’s been around. ■

esorts Casino Hotel is presenting two entertainment options in December that are budgeting conscious without skimping on entertainment value. In the Superstar Theater, The Fat Pack features a trio of friends who might have gained a few inches around the waist, but can still deliver both the sounds of the season and Rat Pack regulars Frank, Dino and Sammy, plus a few jokes in between the serenading. Without A Cue Productions mixes together Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in their interactive murder-mystery dinner theater production A Dickens of a Murder in the Starlight Room.

Ernie Bruno, who is celebrating his 60th year as an entertainer, gave Atlantic City Weekly the scoop on how the Fat Pack — Bruno, Bobby Parella and Johnny Dell — came together. “We had known each other for about 30 years. We all played the same area, the same clubs. We would go see each other work. The young fellow in the band [Johnny Dell], I used to work with his dad. “But we hadn’t worked as a group up until about a year or so ago. Since we are all on the chubby side, I said, ‘The Rat Pack has nothing on us, we can be the Fat Pack,’ so the name was born.” The trio is from the Hudson River Valley in New York, around the Albany-

Troy area. They performed the show in that region and eventually expanded out, now reaching Atlantic City. “This particular show is a Christmas show, then we take a little break in the middle and do some of the music of the Rat Pack,” explains Bruno. He adds that, “We have a live band, a wonderful, fantastic quartet, great musicians.” Holiday songs in the show include “Jingle Bells,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and a production number around “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” including an appearance by another chubby fellow with a white beard. As for the Rat Pack tribute, Bruno

explains, “We don’t try to imitate them. It’s not impressions; it’s our interpretations of the music. We’re all capable of doing Sinatra songs, Dean Martin songs, and Sammy songs, whatever we feel like doing at the moment. We also have a wonderful female singer who will perform at several of the shows, Maria B. Sickey.” Audiences have been very receptive to the show, which returns to Resorts December 3. “It’s really been wonderful. They’re going out of the theater singing. It’s a fun show. And just about every song in the show people will be able to sing along.”

Search for Scrooge’s Killer

Fans of interactive dinner theater productions should enjoy a visit to the Starlight Room at Resorts where on select Saturday nights and a Sunday matinee you might bump into Sherlock Holmes. What was planned as a one-year Christmas Party celebration of Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation into a humanitarian has been turned into the search for Scrooge’s killer, led by the famous detective from 221B Baker Street. Charles Dickens meets Sir Arthur Conan Doyle with dinner, a choice of oven roasted French breast of chicken with hunter sauce, oven roasted potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables, or bow tie pasta primavera. Salad, dessert and coffee are included. Help find the clues or sit back and watch the events unfold — it’s your choice. Either way you will be entertained by the clever thespians from Without A Cue Productions, based in Bensalem, Pa. ■ see more online @

here was only one thing Ralph Hunter wanted to do this past Monday morning, the day the long-awaited annex of his African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey debuted alongside a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton College in Atlantic City. Get a haircut. “Well, the sad part about the whole thing is that I was scheduled to get a haircut this morning and I couldn’t go get my haircut simply because the barber shops are closed on Mondays,” Hunter said with a half smile, sitting in his new Atlantic City office, following an emotional afternoon of standing and talking and being congratulated by the hundreds of people who showed up for the big day. Hunter, a long-time Atlantic City resident and founder and president of the museum, the main site of which is in Newtonville (Atlantic County), was the man of the hour — for many hours — as everyone from his family and friends to Stockton College President Herman Saatkamp, Atlantic County freeholders such as Alex Marino and Frank Formica, the Noyes Museum’s Michael Cagno, iconic Atlantic City businessman and author Reese Paley (“He gave me my first job,” says Hunter), A.C. Mayor-Elect Don Guardian, former Sen. Bill Gormley, Hunter’s board of directors and others, turned up to show support for his longawaited new location in Atlantic City. Hunter didn’t need the haircut; he looked marvelous as usual in his tan suit and bow-tie. And it’s a marvelous new location, too, anchoring the new $1.6 million, 16,000-square-foot Arts Garage (2200 Fairmount Ave., at Mississippi Avenue) and its 18 arts, retail and museum spaces. There are currently nearly 20 regional artists’ works on display at Hunter’s new annex, in addition to historical and cultural pieces from Hunter’s collection. Following two ribbon-cutting ceremonies — one for the Arts Garage and one for the African American Heritage Museum — several speeches, and hundreds of people exploring the new and extraordinary spaces — there was a sense of comraderie and genuine joy

rarely felt at such as an Atlantic City event. If you were there, you might have been driven to tears. Earlier in the afternoon, Hunter spoke near the front of the Arts Garage, where the day’s events kicked off with speeches by Dr. Saatkamp, Assemblyman Chris Brown, Cagno and others. Hunter was the last to speak and garnered the loudest round of applause. Standing at the podium, referring to the other speakers, Hunter said, “They all had notes. I have no notes. I have passion. And my passion is for the arts and African American history, which is American history. “Right now we have art and artists in Atlantic City,” he added, mentioning how when Resorts first opened in 1978, he worked there and saw first-hand how people flocked to Atlantic City when gambling was legalized. “Now they can come to Atlantic City for a totally different reason,” he said. “Atlantic City is going to change because of the arts.” Hunter, his board of directors, volunteers such as Joyce Hagen, and even Freeholder Marino and the Noyes’ Cagno, all helped get the AAHM and Arts Garage ready for its debut, hanging art and even sweeping the concrete floors (a few hours before the start of the event), which give the whole Arts Garage a cool, industrial look and feel. Hunter and the vice president of his board of directors, Brian Jackson (who is also chief of staff for Dr. Saatkamp at Stockton), gave an exclusive interview to Atlantic City Weekly towards the end of the day. Here are excerpts. How long have you been on this journey to bring your own museum to your own town? Ralph Hunter: It’s been a long journey since day one. We had hopes of opening in Atlantic City from the first time we tried to get a museum. We looked at properties here in Atlantic City and it just didn’t work out for us. With the acceptance and the location in Newtonville, we’ve been there for 11 years. So, we’re really delighted to have the opportunity to work with Richard Stockton College and the Noyes Museum to bring the museum into Atlantic City’s arts district.

they can go to the beach and now they can go to the Arts Garage to really understand what art is all about in Atlantic City. Do you think this new annex will expose artists and their work from Atlantic City who may not have been recognized otherwise? RH: No question about it. I think that the opportunity artists will have with the African American Museum, along with the Noyes Museum, will give them a venue to showcase their goods. It’s a 60-mile ride to Philly heading west, but east is the Atlantic Ocean. So, there [was] really no place to go within the borders of Atlantic County [for local artists] to be able to showcase their goods to the people who come down the Jersey Shore. What are your hopes ideally for this annex? BJ: Well, we certainly want to have a presence in Atlantic City for a long period of time. After we’re all gone, we hope the museum will still have its presence. At some point, I think one of our other goals is to be in a larger facility where we can exhibit more of our permanent collection. We have thousands and thousands of items that are in storage because we don’t have the space to show them. We want to be able to exhibit more of our items as well as have a research component so that items that aren’t necessarily displayable can be accessed for research purposes. We have photographs, papers, records, videos, as well as other material that is isn’t necessarily right to be displayed. We want people to access it for research purposes. The art is one component, but the other is the culture. RH: The most important thing is the culture. If you can tie in the arts with the culture and history, I think you’ve achieved your goal. Today’s grand opening was extraordinary. There’s a great turn out. How does it feel now that the day’s winding down after years of anticipation for you? RH: It was a great day for our board of directors. It was a great day for the artists. It was a great day for the CRDA and for Stockton and for the Noyes Museum. It was a great situation for everyone that was involved and I just look forward to next year and hope this just builds on the momentum. More and more people know that we’re here. It’s not just a parking lot; it’s an art garage.

What are your feelings on the arts district and how it will evolve?

Will the Newtonville location of your museum still be the same?

RH: The arts district is going to be extremely strong because of the number of people that come to Atlantic City. Twenty million people come here for our gambling industry and to visit our beaches and our Boardwalk. Now we offer a brand new venue and that venue is the arts. The part of the puzzle that was missing is now in place. They can go to the casinos,

RH: [This annex] won’t affect Newtonville at all. We’ll still be operating in Newtonville and we’ll be operating here. The reason that we’re here is because it’s another business opportunity for the museum to be involved in. A new location means different people come through. We’re changing things around there as well as we’ve been doing here. We have this massive

amount of archival material that just can’t be put in one place. We have this 16,000-squarefoot building here with the African American Museum’s archives. That’s the master plan. BJ: We want a place were kids could come in and do art projects and work with some of our artists. We want a place where we can have lectures and hear our artists speak. We want speakers from the region and Atlantic City who can come and talk to young people about the impact of the arts in this community. That’s ideally where we’d like to get. This is our next step towards that. When you were growing up in Atlantic City did you ever think you’d be here today? RH: No, I thought I’d be mayor of Atlantic City! Those were my first thoughts. I grew up in Philly and came to Atlantic City and I saw these black businesses and these black cab companies and black poolrooms and I saw that all of these things are African American and I was wondering how they did this. In Philadelphia there were a lot of immigrants who came in and took over stores, but here [African Americans] were running and operating their own businesses. It was mind blowing. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I kept telling my mother and father how important it was for me to keep coming to Atlantic City to see this and have an opportunity to see what Atlantic City was all about. Knowing the history and having learned about Atlantic City over the last 25 years is great for me because I’m able to retain those things. It all comes together in the great circle of life. It will never be like that again in terms of black and white and different sides of the town, but I think that the next generation will be very interested in finding out how they got to the next level. **** * The entire Arts Garage project was about people and entities working together, which is really how Atlantic City is going to move forward. From Stockton College, the Noyes, the CRDA, the artists and volunteers, local and state politicians to those who donated money to make Hunter’s dream and the dreams of the other artists a reality, this is the beginning of the next chapter in Atlantic City’s history. Following Dr. Saatkamp’s astute remarks at the grand opening program on how the current exhibit at the new AAHM annex flows in a historical way around the room, Cagno added: “So we’re not New York or Philadelphia. Who cares? We’re Atlantic City!” And the cheers from the room were so loud that they may have been heard in the heavens by those many African Americans whose blood, sweat and tears built the resort, a once segregated city, that now has an African American museum in Ducktown, across town from the Northside. ■

‘Catching Fire’

Seeds of the growing rebellion are planted in ‘Hunger Games’ second chapter By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

I

n my review of The Hunger Games, I noted that the chore of setting up the series background made the first film slow in spots and lacking in fire until Jennifer Lawrence is unleashed in full heroine mode as Katniss Everdeen. Even so, I still thought the film was a bit gentle considering that the Games of the title are children killing children to entertain the privileged. This time around, the keys of the fran-

chise have been handed over from Gary Ross to director Francis Lawrence, a popular music video director whose film credits includes I Am Legend and Water For Elephants. With a story that ups the stakes and brings in the first signs of an uprising among the oppressed citizens, the intensity level explodes in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The triumph of the Hunger Games champions Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark

(Josh Hutcherson) is a brief respite. While touring the districts of Panem as the stars of the Games and star-crossed lovers (an effective ruse that upped the ante on their popularity), their appearances stir up hope in the huddled masses, resulting in protests and several riots. To crush the brewing rebellion, troops are sent to the districts. Meanwhile, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and new game master Plutarch Heavensbee (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), hatch a deadly twist. Since it is the 75th Hunger Games, it is the Quarter Quell, meaning that the competitors will all be former champions. Katniss is the only female champion from District 12, and Peeta, who volunteers to take the place of Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), are both back in the Games. These Hunger Games will feature a lively collection of badasses, including the angry and sharp-tongued Johanna Mason (Jena Malone), the arrogant youngest champion in the history of the Games, Finnick Odair (Sam Clafin), senior citizen Mags (Lynn Cohen) and a duo of technical specialists, Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) and Wiress (Amanda Plummer). The Games are more vicious and the stakes are higher as alliances are formed and battles are waged against a pack of killer baboons, deadly poisonous fog and of

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

course the competitors trying to kill each other to survive. Catching Fire spreads the hero duties around. While Lawrence’s dynamic heroine Katniss remains the heart of the story as her relationship with Peeta intensifies, the new faces add some fire to the battle, in particular Malone, who shines as the tough-as-nails survivor with some serious anger management issues that make her an endearing addition to the story. The contrast of the capital’s decadent and insanely dressed upper crust one-percenters and the desperately clinging-to-life minions in the outlying districts are about to mix it up in a battle to change the world. Alas, that is a battle that is coming in the final chapters of the series, but Catching Fire does indeed ignite our desire to see how that future unfolds. Director Lawrence has the franchise roaring like a muscle car headed for the finish line. n
