n the Monday before Thanksgiving, the United Way of Greater Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey teamed up with Tanger Outlets, The Walk to present “Thanks for Giving Day” as a way to show appreciation to some of the United Way’s supporters. Shopping sprees and gift cards totaling $3,000 were donated by The Walk to 10 winners, and this year, with so many people still suffering the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, Tanger Outlets is spearheading a winterapparel clothing drive through Dec. 21. “Collectively we all came together and said, ‘How can we make this event help?’” says John Emge, executive director of the local United Way chapter. “Thanks for Giving Day is a day of appreciation for our donors. Yet the feedback we received from our campaign chairs and volunteers is that these individuals had already planned to shop for local families in need if they won a spree. It’s this powerful generosity that exists in our community that will enable us to emerge from this disaster even stronger, and more united.” Items donated will be distributed to local families affected by Hurricane Sandy through the Salvation Army. Donations of coats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots may be taken to Tanger Outlets Shopper Services, located at 2014 Baltic Ave. in Atlantic City. For more information, call 404-4483 (ext. 14). Additionally, as part of a $600,000 holiday lighting program and parade scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1, Tanger Outlets The Walk is donating a 35-foot tall Christmas tree to be lit at the foot of the A.C. Expressway. The holiday parade starts at noon at Atlantic and Maine avenues, traveling south and ending at The Walk at Michigan and Baltic avenues. The parade is free and open to the public, and will include floats, bands, costumed characters and appearances by Santa Claus and Miss Atlantic City 2012 Aliyah Montague.

Greg Brown
‘Hymns to What Is Left’ (Sawdust)
Modern-day Bob Dylan and Tom Waits (always) make the weathered baritone voice of Greg Brown sound like Prince on the latter’s 25th studio release, Hymns to What Is Left. The 63-year-old Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter’s beautiful grit, croaking croon and vulnerable, yet aged crackle are in masterful form on the 14 new tracks, including the gorgeous ode to love “I Could Just Cry,” the stirring “Hanging Man” and the moody epic “On the Levee.” Brown’s long-time cohort Bo Ramsey lends his electric guitar to the otherwise acoustic affair, which includes tasty fiddle, banjo, mandolin and button accordion playing as well as guest vocals by Brown’s wife Iris DeMent. From the jumpy Waitsian opener “Arkansas” to the pensive closer “Earth Is a Woman,” Hymns to What Is Left is the collection of songs Brown’s fans have been waiting for since 2000’s Covenant. Certainly, one of the best albums of 2012. — Jeff Schwachter

Gilda Rocks Again!
An uber-successful inaugural event returns to the Taj’s Hard Rock Café, featuring a performance by Rock Hall of Famer Dion and benefiting Gilda’s Club of South Jersey. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
G
ilda Radnor’s brand of quirky, nerdish comedy endeared her to the American public as an original Saturday Night Live cast member, and while her life was cut short in its prime by ovarian cancer, her legacy lives on through the non-profit cancer support group that bears her name, Gilda’s Club. One of the most successful of the dozens of Gilda’s Club affiliates throughout the U.S. and Canada — created as an offshoot to the southern New Jersey-born Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Fund in 2003, about eight years after the original Gilda’s Club was founded in New York City — is Gilda’s Club of South Jersey. A huge part of the reason is the South Jersey chapter’s affiliation with Jim Allen, chairman of Hard Rock International and CEO of Seminole Gaming, and his wife Isabel, a longtime Gilda’s Club of South Jersey board member. The couple has honed a reputation as trendsetters in southern New Jersey civic and charitable circles, and still calls the Atlantic City region their home. Last year Isabel Allen, along with fellow Gilda’s Club of South Jersey board members Joan Licursi, Phyllis Lacca, and Hard Rock senior director of brand philanthropy Annie Balliro, came up with the idea for the inaugural Gilda Rocks On benefit to carry on the club’s grassroots philosophy of providing free support programs to all cancer sufferers and their families. Jim Allen joined the cause and used his considerable influence to make the inaugural event a blockbuster success, raising about $150,000 for Gilda’s Club last November at the Taj Mahal’s Hard Rock Café. The second annual Gilda Rocks On event is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Hard Rock, and — with Grammy awardwinning, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Dion as its feature act this year — has already exceeded last year’s monetary totals. “We’re really fortunate that Jim has these connections to help us out, and just asked Dion to come play for us,” says Gilda’s Club of South Jersey CEO Michelle Chalmers. “Not only is it going to be a great time, this will really help to raise awareness for who we are and what we do in the community, and for anyone touched by cancer. It’s a

great opportunity to get additional exposure when you have a big room coming in, and a performer of that magnitude playing for you. “We’ve already exceeded our goal thus far, and with the ticket sales still coming in this week and a great silent auction, everything else is just a wonderful bonus that will allow us to reach out and assist even more people in the community.” Last year Steven Van Zandt, guitarist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, was in attendance and hopes to be again, as will legendary DJ Jerry “The Geator with the Heater” Blavat. The $200 per-person donation includes appetizers and drinks, and chances to bid on over 50 premier silentauction items like exotic vacation packages with airfare, celebrity-signed guitars and other memorabilia. “Tina LoBiondo [wife of Congressman Frank LoBiondo] is on our committee and she was kind enough to donate a package to the Congressional Wives Luncheon with First Lady Michelle Obama, which is a wonderful event,” says Chalmers. “She did it last year as well, and her husband, Congressman LoBiondo, is donating a touring lunch down in Washington, D.C., as well, which is very nice of him.” For more information, call 926-2699 or go to gildasclubsouthjersey.org. n

y any measure, it isn’t even close. The Moody Blues, those veteran cosmic rockers from the 1960s, have been at it for 48 years, minus a two-year hiatus in the mid-1970s. Fourteen of their 16 studio albums have been certified platinum or gold, they’ve sold more than 70 million albums and it seems like there’s never a time when they’re not on tour. Fellow ’60s progressive rockers Procol Harum have had a solid and respectable career. Their 14 studio albums did well, but their album sales pale in comparison to the Moody Blues. Procol Harum was known more for its live performances than its recordings (save the single “A Whiter Shade of Pale”). And in 1977, the band broke up and didn’t get back together for 14 years. But when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced the nominees for its class of 2013, it was Procol Harum that got the nod. Once again, Cleveland’s rock hall dissed the more obvious candidate. But at least one member of the Moody Blues says he could care less about the snub. “I have to tell you, I don’t have sleepless nights about it because from my point of view, it’s far more important for us to be on stage and touring and meeting the people who have supported us for 40 or 50 years,” says bass guitarist John Lodge, who joined the band in 1967. “That’s far more important to me, that there’s a love for the Moody Blues which cannot be replaced.” Lodge understands there’s an animosity within the hall toward progressive rock. It’s been widely reported the singular source of the antiprog rock movement has been Rolling Stone magazine publisher Jann Wenner, a co-founder of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In recent years, the list of nominees would often include a progressive rock band as an almost grudging nod to the art form. And while he doesn’t seem all that offended, Lodge, 67, thinks the rock hall is doing itself a disservice by leaving out bands with widespread appeal like the Moody Blues. They’ll add to that total when they perform at Caesars Atlantic City Friday, Nov. 30. “It’s a shame, really, because progressive rock ... has been a really integral part of [American music], and I don’t understand why they miss that in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Lodge says during a chat from Naples, Florida, during a short break from the band’s fall tour. “Because from a commercial point of view, if I owned the [rock hall], I’d have the Moody Blues in it. They’re [still] touring and there’s hundred of thousands of people who come along every year to see the Moody Blues on stage. You’d think they want [us] in to attract our fans.” To put things into a better perspective, Lodge points out that the rock hall came along 20 years after the Moody Blues scored their first platinum album, Days of Future Passed. “What came first, the chicken or the egg?”
The Moody Blues
‘If I owned the rock hall, I’d have the Moody Blues in it’ he asks rhetorically with a small laugh, “or the Moody Blues or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?” The Moody Blues were created in 1964 by flautist and composer Ray Thomas, who wanted to include Lodge, who was then a 14-year-old novice bass player. But Lodge put his budding music career on hold to attend college. Two years later, he earned an engineering degree and then joined the Moody Blues for their recording of Days of Future Passed. Lodge says he pursued engineering because he originally wanted to design cars. “I love car design, the exteriors, the interiors, everything about them,” he says. “I thought I was going to be a car designer.” But then he discovered music when he was 13. One year later, he was playing with Thomas in a band called El Riot and The Rebels before leaving to go to technical college in England. Although he’s been a professional musician for more than 50 years, Lodge says he’s found ways to use his engineering degree in the band and in life. “I use the determination to finish what I started, the discipline,” he explains. “I enjoyed engineering because of the mathematics, and music and mathematics do go together very much.” The Moody Blues have slowed down the recording aspect of their careers, but not because they lack the creative spark to produce new music. They just don’t know how to get the music heard. Radio stations that play music by 50-year-old prog rock bands are in short supply, even on the wide-open bands of satellite radio. “That’s one of the reasons we haven’t recorded a new album for a few years,” he says. “Because if you write a song and record it, it’s something from the heart, something you want to share with people. And then it’s finding a way to share it, and I really don’t know you do that [today]. So that’s probably why we haven’t recorded any new material.” n

Operation Hat Trick Shoots and Scores
The hockey game benefit pitting locked-out NHL All-Stars against each other to raise money for several charities related to the victims of Storm Sandy in the tristate region helped bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com
A
tlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall hosted hockey again this weekend, but on Saturday (Nov. 24), it wasn’t your average game
on ice. Prior to Sunday’s AHL game at the Hall, locked out NHL All-Stars Brad Richards (NY Rangers) and Scott Hartnell (Philadelphia Flyers), in partnership with Caesars Atlantic City, presented the first “Operation Hat Trick” charity exhibition hockey game. In fact, many locked-out hockey stars — such as the Philadelphia Flyers’ Hartnell and Todd Fedoruk, Tampa Bay Lightning’s Steven Stamkos, Ottawa Senators’ Daniel Alfredsson and New Jersey Devils’ Martin Brodeur, among others — came together for Operation Hat Trick, a charity hockey game benefit to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Nearly 11,000 people came out for the charity

game, which has been hailed as a big success by organizers, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the victims of Sandy. “Guys already are talking about doing another one in New York,” ex-Flyers Todd Fedoruk was heard saying at a post-game party held at Dusk at Caesars, after the game Saturday night. Operation Hat Trick, which sold out within about week of tickets going on sale, wound up with Team Richards beating Team Hartnell 10-6. But the camaraderie and spirit of coming together as one team — Team U.S.A. — was evident in the Hall on Saturday, four weeks after Sandy struck the Jersey shore. All proceeds from the Operation Hat Trick event will go directly to the Empire State Relief Fund, the New Jersey Hurricane Relief Fund and the American Red Cross, aiding New York and New Jersey families affected by Hurricane

Sandy. Rock and roller Sammy Hagar, whose threeyear-old Sammy’s Beach Bar at Bally’s suffered severe damage from the storm, pledged to donate $1,000 for every goal scored during the game. Hagar said he would donate up to $10,000 “directly going” to the Empire Relief Fund, NJ Hurricane Relief Fund and American Red Cross. Thankfully, for victims of Sandy, the exhibition game was a high-scoring match. “On behalf of myself and Sammy’s Beach Bar and Grill, I’m proud to lend support to our neighbors and communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy and applaud the NHL players who’ll be hittin’ the ice on Saturday,” Hagar said before the game.
“Making sure kids and families have food on the table has been a personal mission of mine for several years and it’s through organizations like the Empire Relief Fund, NJ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund and the local chapters of the American Red Cross that we’re gonna get that needed money into the hands of the people and families who need it to eat and rebuild their lives — right now. So, to Brad Richards, Scott Hartnell and their respective teams, ‘Let the games begin, guys’ cause I’m gonna commit a minimum of 1k for every goal you score on each other.” While in town, some of the NHL players visited with Atlantic City Sandy first responders, including the firefighters at Atlantic City Fire Station No. 2. n

Tastes of Borgata Linger Still savoring the masterful culinary creations at this month’s Savor Borgata By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

NOVEMBER 29 - DECEMBER 5, 2012 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
T
his year’s Savor Borgata, which brought together that facility’s diverse array of celebrity chefs on Saturday, Nov. 10, was undeniably our region’s culinary event of the season. Without further adieu, we offer our experience and opinions regarding the fifth annual edition, titled: “Savor Borgata: An Evening with Borgata’s Culinary Masters.” Start with this: It’s no longer just one event on a single night. Now spanning an entire weekend, the program encompasses several days of seminars, cooking demonstrations, discussions and samplings of wine, whiskey and tequila. But the real focus, of course, remains food, each chef presenting a tasting menu for attendees. Aware based on past experience that iconic, California-based Wolfgang Puck’s lines would undoubtedly be the longest, we began our gastronomic adventure there. Just as in previous years, the kinetic chef was cooking a la minute, and plating personally. Midway through our 10-minute wait in his queue, we couldn’t help but notice the enormous, unmistakable frame of former NBA star Anthony Mason. Mason, every inch of 6-foot-7 and generously listed at 250 pounds during playing days, still looks fit enough to pull down contested rebounds with anybody. Instantly noticed by the sharp-eyed Puck, Mason and companion were politely whisked forward, with the gargantuan retired Knick forward joining the Austrian chef behind his line. Puck even playfully doused him with parsley as they welcomed one another, like a priest dispensing holy water. Their man-hug a moment later was both a hilarious Mutt-and-Jeff display — Mason is at least a foot and half taller — as well as proof positive why Puck has become such a megawatt star. Grinning mischievously, very much in his

Puck even playfully doused him with parsley as they welcomed one another, like a priest dispensing holy water. element, he instructed charges to prep “A Big Boy plate” for the retired baller before turning him over to a growing swarm of autograph/pic hunters. That serving, the most complex execution of any on this night, was a combination of grilled American Kobe beef, Armenian lamb kabobs and ricotta gnocchi with shrimp. Proceeding to the closest station, Michael Mina’s SeaBlue, we thoroughly enjoyed the lighter, exotic notes of cavatelli with black truffles, squash and the Burgundian cheese epoisses. Sticking to strategy, we continued down the Borgata Event Center’s right side, hitting up steak house Old Homestead for a mini Kobe meatball.
The dense, rich meat affirmed its celebrated reputation. Doused with a gob of cool ricotta and ladled in sweet tomato sauce, the only issue became how not to soil apparel while devouring the juicy round. We made our move across the wide floor upon hearing Bobby Flay’s description of his plates via an interview with overenthusiastic, roving host Billy Harris. Harris actually interrupted Flay midsentence, causing the chef to curtly remind him: “I wasn’t finished yet!” One of Flay’s pair of items, a mini Philly cheesesteak blue-corn taco with provolone, was our single favorite bite of the evening. What we liked best was the mild, insistent
heat, not dumbed-down and genuinely piquant. From this point on kind readers will have to excuse us; things get a little fuzzy when we are in the presence of this much extraordinary food. We vaguely remember chatting with Izakaya’s Michael Schulson while awaiting hand rolls of spicy tuna, yellowtail, jalapeno and salmon. On display near his traditionally-Japanese serving platform was a yard-long, magnificent King salmon, probably weighing in at well over 20 pounds. Then, a smoky duck confit tamale from one of two tables manned by Borgata’s in-house restaurant staffers. Across the room we appreciated the subtlety of The Water Club’s creation, supervised by 2011 Iron Chef addition, Geoffrey Zakarian. His Ahi tuna slider, delicate and refreshing, was spooned with a refined slaw of fennel, ginger and lemon. Having reveled at Fornelletto’s agro dolce seasonal preparation of butternut squash during a recent meal, we enjoyed the orange squash’s combination with burrata cheese — a sort of mozzarella-ricotta hybrid — figs and balsamico. Trust us, there was much more food — double lobster consomme, short rib sliders on brioche, Thai chicken skewers and lamb chops Scottadito — than we simply could bring ourselves to consume. Along with a cheese selection, there were more than a dozen wines from producers like Francis Ford Coppola and Perrier-Jouet, plus cocktails by Pernod Ricard. What we made absolutely certain not to miss were the sweet creations of executive pastry chef — formerly White House pastry chef — Thaddeus DuBois. These were highlighted by mini root beer floats, served to order, an orange frozen soufflé sundae, and cool, popsicle-styled lollipops of coconut and lime cheesecake. From our perspective, in this initial year converting the annual Savor Borgata to a glorious, weekend-long celebration of food, things turned out pretty darned well. n

When Walt Whitman Did AC One of the world’s most respected poets had a passion for the people and places along the Jersey shore. By Tom Wilk • feedback@acweekly.com
T
“Passing right through five or six miles (I could have journeyed with delight for a hundred) of these odorous sea prairies we come to the end — the Camden and Atlantic depot within good gun-shot of the beach.” was not any different. The poet turned travel writer to describe his trip for a story in the Philadelphia Times, providing a glimpse of the resort city before it became internationally known. Gazing out the window of his train as it traveled across southern New Jersey, Whitman wrote that he enjoyed seeing the winter landscape. He recounted some of the towns he passed through, including Collingswood, Haddonfield, Williamstown and Hammonton.
Anticipation increased as he drew closer to his final destination when the train rolled through Egg Harbor City and Pomona. “Passing right through five or six miles (I could have journeyed with delight for a hundred) of these odorous sea prairies we come to the end — the Camden and Atlantic depot within good gun-shot of the beach.” Whitman’s first impressions focused on the natural appeal of the shoreline, which he described in glowing terms, marveling at the expanse of unspoiled sand and the recurring
presence of salt waves. In Atlantic City, Whitman traveled around by horse and carriage and on foot. While riding along the beach, he was surprised how the carriage wheels barely made a dent in the sand. He enjoyed the seaside atmosphere that could not be found around his Camden home. After almost two hours on the beach, Whitman took a carriage ride around the city, praising the condition of the streets. He singled out Atlantic and Pacific avenues, enjoying the sight of private cottages on the latter. Following dinner, he took a stroll through the city, relishing the open space and the solitude (“hardly met or saw a person,” he wrote). Whitman also recorded his observations of the ship traffic that caught his eye in the Atlantic, making special note of distant vessels and smoke rising from a steamer. The visit to Atlantic City left him wanting to see more of New Jersey’s coastal towns. He wrote of a long-contemplated exploration of the region, ranging from Sandy Hook to Cape May, expressing a desire to meet the people and explore the natural environment. Whitman also addressed the timing of his visit in January, a month when many people are content to stay away from the shore until the arrival of warmer temperatures. “Although it is not generally thought of, except in connection with hot weather, I am not sure but Atlantic City would suit me just as well, perhaps best, for winter quarters,” he wrote. “As to bad weather, it is no worse than anywhere else, and when fine, the pleasures and characteristic attractions are inimitable.” In the language of the 21st century, Whitman was ready to “Do AC,” regardless of the calendar or meteorological conditions. ■

he writer lived three blocks from the Delaware River in Camden, New Jersey, but his thoughts turned to the Atlantic Ocean when he awoke one Sunday morning in January 1879. “A bright clear sunrise after a good night’s rest” left Walt Whitman in a positive frame of mind. The 59-year-old poet and author of Leaves of Grass decided to set out for Atlantic City for a day trip. Since moving to Camden in the spring of 1873 to live with his brother, George, the native New Yorker had expressed a desire to visit the Jersey Shore. In a letter to a friend dated June 21, 1873, Whitman describes his health ailments in the aftermath of suffering a stroke but also adds: “As soon as I get a little stronger and free from head distress, I shall go down to Atlantic City.” Leo D. Blake, curator of the Walt Whitman House in Camden, where the poet lived until his death in March 1892, said Whitman was attracted to the water. “Whitman certainly did draw inspiration around water,” he says, “from the Hudson and East rivers to the Delaware River and the Atlantic Ocean. His work is immersed in it, often as a reflection of his thoughts.” “He mentions in Notebooks and Daybooks of visiting Jersey shore areas, namely Ocean Grove and Cape May,” Blake added. Two of Whitman’s poems — “Patrolling Barnegat” and “By thine own lips, O Sea” — were inspired by visits to the Jersey shore. At the time of his journey, Atlantic City was undergoing a period of growth since its founding a quarter of a century earlier. The population would grow from 1,043 in 1870 to 5,477 a decade later, an increase of more than 425 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. At a time before the invention of the automobile, many visitors to the Jersey shore traveled by railroad and Whitman

Review: ‘Legends in Concert’
Merry Christmas, Baby Elvis, Marilyn and more ‘Legends’ sing your favorite holiday numbers at Bally’s to Dec. 30 By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

How did you become an Elvis tribute artist? When I was nine years old I was listening to Elvis music and Tom Jones and Michael Jackson, but Elvis stood out to me. I started mimicking him as a kid at family parties and stuff like that. I sang in choirs and after my teenage years I started a band. We did
a fifties thing and played the Jersey shore. I did an Elvis song in the set and people said, ‘Man you sound like Elvis, you look like Elvis, maybe you should do a contest.’ I walked into this contest in Memphis in 1990 with 80 guys in jumpsuit and I was dressed as ’50s Elvis with a pink jacket on and won the whole thing. From there it just took off and I’ve been with Legends since 1993 [when he took over for Tony Roi in the Atlantic City show].
that song for 20 years and I never get tired of singing it.
How do you like the holiday show? It has a different feeling to it. The closing number is awesome and we got a standing ovation the other night. We are trying to give people some holiday spirit.
You’ve been in Atlantic City a long time. Do you have any favorite places? The beach. I love the Boardwalk. I walk the Boardwalk every morning. My main concern when the storm hit was hoping the Boardwalk would still be there. And I like hanging out in Ventnor. Ventnor is awesome, and I love the Downbeach Deli [in Margate]. ■
What is your favorite Elvis song to perform? I love “Suspicious Minds.” I’ve been doing
People love the fact that you meet with fans after every show. Since some fans are so passionate about Elvis, have you had any over-enthusiastic fans? Most fans are respectful but there are a few that go a little overboard. I did have to get a restraining order against one lady who was a bit of a stalker.

“With the current state of casino revues, the fact that the show also has a live band and outstanding dancers is a major bonus.”
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • NOVEMBER 29 - DECEMBER 5, 2012
egends In Concert, the long running tribute show ensconced in the Legends in Concert Theater at Bally’s, is all dressed up for the holidays with a holiday themed set and Christmas music to get audiences in a seasonal state of mind. This show features a particularly strong group of tribute artists presenting Carrie Underwood, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe and a big finish with “The King,” Elvis Presley. Taking the Elvis spotlight is Jersey boy Kevin Mills, who grew up in Cinnaminson, Burlington County. His love of Elvis growing up sent him to Memphis where, in 1990, he won the Images of the King Elvis tribute contest and more recently was awarded third place (in 2009) and second place (2010) at the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest also in Memphis. Mills has enjoyed his time in Atlantic City and on the Legends stage as he reveals in this interview with Atlantic City Weekly.
There is a reason the Legends in Concert name is well respected — the show always deliver on its promise to feature tribute artists who are good at what they do. And with the current state of casino revues, the fact that the show also has a live band and outstanding dancers is a major bonus. The new holiday edition of Legends at Bally’s features a strong group of tribute artists. First up is Sara Hickey as Carrie Underwood, part of Legends’ ongoing plan to bring more contemporary tributes into the mix ala recent shows locally featuring Lady Gaga and Adele. Hickey presents such Carrie classics as “All American Girl,” “Jesus Take the Wheel,” “Cowboy Casanova” and in the holiday spirit, “Do You Hear What I Hear.” Next up is Sharon Owens as Barbra Streisand. Streisand? Someone had the chutzpah to do Streisand? Ms. Owens is the only performer in the Legends in Concert universe who dares. When she first appeared opening night there was a collective gasp in the crowd because Owens really looks like Babs, and immediately wowed the audience with a terrific rendition of “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” a challenging Streisand standard. Owens went on to do “The Way We Were,” and a powerful “Somewhere.” In addition, she does a comedy bit featuring a Streisand rap and a difficult Streisand holiday favorite, Babs’ lightning fast scatting version of “Jingle Bells.” The superstar parade continues with the always entertaining Corey Melton moon walking his way across the stage as Michael Jackson with “Billie Jean,” “Thriller” (a blast for the dancers in zombie finery), and as his Christmas tune, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Stacey Whitton’s Marilyn Monroe is part audience participation comedy routine and part singing (Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend,” “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”). Whitton’s holiday tune was “Santa Baby.” Award-winning Elvis tribute artist Kevin Mills, who first brought his version of “The King” to Atlantic City in 1993, provided the legendary finish with “Burning Love,” “Suspicious Minds,” “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” and a delightful take on “Blue Christmas.” The entire cast returned for a big holiday finish with “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” wrapping up a Legends presentation that manages to be even better than usual. — LH

Holiday Greetings from Clay Singer Clay Aiken rides his sleigh full of Christmas cheer to the Trump Taj Mahal By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com
46
NOVEMBER 29 - DECEMBER 5, 2012 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
C
hristmas apparently isn’t as cool as it once was with recording artists. There are considerably less holiday albums released these days as there were a generation ago. But Clay Aiken reaches for Christmas music at this time of year. The pop artist doesn’t care if Christmas isn’t cool. “That doesn’t matter to me because I’m not cool either,” Aiken tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from New York where he is taping a segment for the Dr. Oz show. “I can see why Christmas isn’t cool. It can be schmaltzy and cheesy but that’s fine for my personality. That’s why I’m out on another Christmas tour. I love it.” The American Idol alum (class of 2003, runner-up to A.I. champ Ruben Studdard), will perform Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Trump Taj Mahal. Aiken says he will tour behind Christmas music each year in perpetuity. “I’m going to do it annually since I hope to become the next Andy Williams,” Aiken says. “I don’t think anyone else wants to be the contemporary Christmas artist and that’s alright with me. I would love to be able to be known as the Christmas artist.”
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
“I can see why Christmas isn’t cool. It can be schmaltzy and cheesy but that’s fine for my personality. That’s why I’m out on another Christmas tour. I love it.” Expect Aiken, who will be backed by an orchestra, to belt out an array of Christmas classics. Such seasonal favorites as “Winter Wonderland,” “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night,” which are on Aiken’s 2004 release Merry Christmas With Love, will be rendered. “I had the greatest time making that album,” Aiken says. “From that point on, I knew I wanted to be a part of the holiday season every year. You don’t have to see me the rest of the year.” Well, Aiken is just kidding. “You’ll hear plenty of my non-Christmas albums in the upcoming years,” he says. But expect much of Aiken’s future mate-
rial to be retro. Aiken was born too late and he knows it. The pop singer would have been perfectly at home during the 1960s singing hits from legendary Brill Building songwriters such as Neil Diamond, Carole King and Neil Sedaka. Aiken revels in singing love songs from a bygone era. “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” penned by the aforementioned Sedaka, Henry Mancini’s “Moon River” and Roy Orbison’s “Crying” is some of the tunes Aiken loves to croon. “I have to agree with [the] ‘born too late’ line,” Aiken says. “I just hope it’s not ‘born too late, died too soon.’ I think my voice fits
those songs from the ’60s and ’70s and I just love those songs. They are wonderful songs from a wonderful period. I feel like I relate to the songs from that period.” That’s why it was so uncomfortable watching the post-Idol Aiken be dressed up by the corporate machine into something he isn’t. You couldn’t help but wince watching Aiken in a leather jacket. “I think it’s so important to stay in your own lane,” Aiken says. “When I put out my first two albums, they were dressing me up like I was going to be the next Justin Timberlake or how Justin Bieber looks today. That image just doesn’t work for me. But there is a type of music that works for me, it’s Christmas music.” Is it just a coincidence that Aiken is performing at Donald Trump’s Taj Mahal after he finished second last spring on The Donald’s NBC hit The Apprentice? “That’s a funny thing, isn’t it?” Aiken offers. “I had a great time on the show. It was very hard work. We worked 18 hours a day, but it was all worth it for the experience. I enjoyed working on Lisa Lampanelli’s team. She is so hardcore and we have a similar absurd sense of humor. It was a challenge every day. I had a project to do that I could take ownership of. It was great. I enjoyed being around Arsenio Hall and Donald Trump was wonderful.” When American Idol alum precedes Aiken’s name, he can’t help but chuckle. “It’s been so long since I was on American Idol that I look through binoculars to see it,” Aiken says. “It’s been 10 years, but I appreciate the opportunity the show gave me. The show has gone through quite a few changes since I was on. Simon [Cowell] is gone and so is Paula [Abdul] and Randy [Jackson]. They were great judges, but they had to move on and the show is moving on. It’s still doing well.” Will Aiken ever do another reality show? “I think I’ve done enough of those shows, don’t you?” Aiken says with a laugh. “I’m just happy doing this. I love to sing and to be on tour and to make albums. I’m right where I want to be. Right now is extra special since I get to do what I love most, which is to sing these Christmas songs every night. “Right now, I don’t think I would change a thing. Everything is going very well.” ■ see more online @
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY PRESENTS THE 5TH ANNUAL
Nightlife Awards Spielberg Does Lincoln Proud History with heart; Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi’ By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
S
Lincoln Directed by Steven Spielberg • rated PG-13
Whale of a Tale Ang Lee’s The Life of Pi, is a mash up of fable, religious allegory, visual 3D feast, Animal Planet special, drama and comedy. How much you buy into these various elements will determine your level of enjoyment. Personally, I was hooked by the reluctant partnership of man and Bengal tiger and the splendid visuals. A teenage Hindu boy (Suraj Sharma) is lost at sea when a ship carrying zoo animals sinks, and winds up on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. The heart of the film is how these two come to realize that each needs the other for survival. There are numerous heart wrenching moments and even moments of humor in this beautiful fable, but to be honest there are also moments of boredom in the set-up before getting to the enchanting part of the story. ■

This is the Lincoln we’ve learned about in school — gentle yet forceful when needed, brilliant as a politician and sometimes overwhelmed by the demands of family when he must focus on being the president of a nation divided. Spielberg and Kushner, with a terrific ensemble, have done Lincoln proud. ■

teven Spielberg knows how to make an epic movie infused with an intimate feel. With Lincoln, he has accomplished that goal while showing us that the nasty in-fighting of American party politics is not restricted to the modern era. Based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography of Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, with a screenplay by playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America), the film highlights the final four months of Lincoln’s life. He was in a hell of a political battle even as the bloody Civil War was still painfully winding down. Lincoln (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) was determined to find the votes to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution (the abolition of slavery) despite an angry, defiant Democratic-controlled House of Representatives and members of his own Republican Party who didn’t want to make such a radical move. The people were concerned about the consequences of freed slaves as newly minted citizens, rather than chattel. While the centerpiece of the film is the political battle, the film provides a rounded picture of Lincoln the man as a loving father to both a young son (Gulliver McGrath) and an older one (Joseph Gordon-Levitt); as a husband with a marriage beset by tragedy (Sally Field plays Mary Todd Lincoln); as a fabled storyteller who still retains his backwoods lawyer persona; as a president during a devastating war; and as the most powerful man in the country determined to wield that power. There is a lot of humor in this historical drama, much of it provided by the 1865 version of lobbyists (played by the delightful trio of James Spader, Tim Blake Nelson and John Hawkes), who are pulling out every dirty trick — patronage jobs, blackmail — to get the votes Lincoln needs to change the face of the nation.
