tlantic City VIP, a new online marketing and promotion company in Atlantic City (atlanticcityvip.com), in cooperation with the Showboat, is presenting the first Fall Into Winter event on Friday, Dec. 6 (7-10pm), at the Foundation Room inside Showboat Atlantic City. For $75 a person, the holiday-inspired night will include specialty bites, cocktails, silent auction, live acoustic music, DJ, dancing, and more. Tickets can be purchased through Gilda’s Club South Jersey by calling 926-2699 or online at gildasclubsouthjersey.org/events. All proceeds benefit Gilda’s Club South Jersey. “BJ Hamilton and I wanted to create a new and exciting event, and with so many people we know affected by cancer we felt Gilda’s Club was a natural fit,” says Boardwalk Hall’s Kara Cermanski, co-chair of Fall into Winter with Hamilton, of Market City Solutions. “With the help of our wonderful committee members, we were able to give 100% of all the proceeds raised to Gilda’s Club South Jersey.” Cermanski and Hamilton came up with the event because they know there are so many young professionals in the area that want to give back and volunteer, but don’t know how. “With the help from Lauren Crenshaw from Gilda’s Club South Jersey, BJ Hamilton and I formed a 35-person committee and created the first Fall into Winter benefiting Gilda’s Club,” adds Cermanski. “We are so thrilled at the effort that the committee has given to this event. There are so many moving parts to Fall into Winter that will make it a not-to-be-missed event!” Hamilton adds: “It has been a great honor and great pleasure to work with so many talented and young working professionals. Seeing this event come from inception to fruition has been amazing.” Local businesses big and small also stepped up to the plate for the benefit. “It just goes to show how much a community can accomplish when they choose to work together to support such a great cause like Gilda’s Club, who does so much to help so many,” adds Hamilton. “Unfortunately we can all relate to cancer, but our strength together shows that no one will have to face it alone.” Crenshaw, the special projects coordinator for Gilda’s Club South Jersey, says the event is attracting “a demographic of young professionals that have not come to our fundraisers in the past.” She adds that, “Thanks to the generosity of Caesars Entertainment [and] Showboat, 100% of the $75 ticket price will go to GCSJ,” to ensure that its free programs for those affected by cancer can continue.

South Jersey Wind Ensemble at Stockton PAC By Jeff Schwachter

T

he Stockton Performing Arts Center hosted a variety of great shows in 2013 and on Monday evening, Dec. 9, the South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble brings its annual holiday concert, An Olde English Christmas, to the venue, located on the campus in Galloway. A 65-member concert band of music teachers and professional musicians will play songs of the holiday season with a few special musical nods to the holiday song tradition “across the pond.” The showtime is 7:30pm and all tickets are $17. Visit stocktonpac.org or call the PAC box office at 652-9000. The holiday spirit will continue at the Stockton PAC on Dec. 13 & 14 with the Atlantic City Ballet Company’s annual performances of The Nutcracker.

Billie Joe Armstrong & Norah Jones ‘Foreverly’ (Reprise)

T

he unexpected dynamic duo of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and pop-jazz chanteuse Norah Jones recreate the unique double lead vocal sound of the Everly Brothers on this strong release, which is based on a 1958 album the Everly Brothers released called Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, featuring southern torch songs and American folk songs from the south. All the songs are redone by Billie Joe and Norah, who sound like they’re having a blast right from the opening notes of “Roving Gambler” to the closing track “Put My Little Shoes Away.” Writes Billie Joe (who, like Jones, grew up in the south and has memories of these songs from his childhood in Oklahoma): “Jonesy and me got together for nine days in New York City to record and sing these pretty hymns in the name of tradition.” Amen. Other stand-out tracks include the mournful “Down in the Willow Garden” and the shuffling “Kentucky.” — Jeff Schwachter

A.C. Library’s Kwanzaa Program Dec. 7 By Ray Schweibert

O

ne of the Atlantic City Free Public Library’s most popular traditions, its annual Kwanzaa program, will be held 2:30pm on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the main library (One N. Tennessee Ave. in A.C.). The Mount Laurel-based Afro-One Dance, Drama and Drum Theatre will perform and discuss the seven principles of Kwanzaa in an entertaining and educational format. Dr. Patricia Reid-Merritt, the founder and director of Afro-One since 1974 and a professor of Social Work and AfricanAmerican Studies at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, will lead the presentation. The founding philosophy behind Kwanzaa, says Reid-Merritt, is that “African Americans here in the United States represent a cultural nation, and they need to do things to make certain that that cultural nation will be preserved.” Kwanzaa is celebrated each year from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. The holiday recognizes seven principals of African Heritage called Nguzo Saba — “principals that should not only be adhered to during Kwanzaa, but throughout one’s life,” says Reid-Merritt. They include Unity, Self Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. “Kwanzaa is a period of time when we celebrate the goodness in our community and the goodness that we expect in the future,” says Reid Merritt, the recipient of numerous honors including the NAACP Freedom Award. Additionally, the library will show the Kwanzaa film The Black Candle on Friday, Dec. 27, at 2pm in the main library’s second-floor meeting room. The Beer Buzz

Two new N.J. craft breweries get state go-ahead while Maryland brewer benefits Gonzo Foundation with limited edition Porter. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

If you can spare $500 to contribute to a worthy cause, and would like to own (and possibly even consume) a craft beer of the highest quality brewed in the smallest of batches, Flying Dog Brewery of Frederick, Maryland, is releasing 100 collector-edition magnums of its Gonzo Imperial Porter. Gonzo Imperial Porter is named after famed author Hunter S. Thompson, who was a longtime friend of Flying Dog founder George Stranahan. When Thompson died in 2005, the brewery named the beer in his honor. Ralph Steadman, the brewery’s 77-year-old label artist who also worked closely with Thompson, designed the illustration of a cigarette-smoking skeleton proclaiming “OK, let’s party” that adorns each bottle of Gonzo Imperial Porter. The special edition brew is packaged in 750-millilitre bottles and specially aged for three months in oak whiskey barrels. Steadman has signed each special-edition magnum, and each is sealed in wax and comes in a custom-fitted wooden display box branded with the Flying Dog logo, originally created by Steadman in 1995. A numbered certificate of authenticity and pair of Flying Dog goblets are also included with each magnum. All of the proceeds benefit The Gonzo Foundation, a nonprofit organization created by Thompson’s wife, Anita Thompson, to promote literature,

journalism and political activism through the legacy of Hunter S. Thompson. Most Flying Dog brands are available in most New Jersey retail outlets, including Gonzo Imperial Porter, but due to Maryland shipping laws the special-edition porter is only available at Flying Dog’s brewery in Frederick, (about 20 miles northwest of Baltimore). Visit flyingdogales.com for more. *** As anticipated by local beer expert Gary Monterosso, two local craft breweries received approval from the state’s Division of Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) to open for business. According to articles by Jeff Linkous of the Web site beerstainedletter. com, Glasstown Brewery of Millville got ABC approval Nov. 25 and will soon open in about 2,400 square feet of space at the Millville Airport, pending city approval. The brewery will be producing seasonal beers as well as an American pale ale, a stout, an IPA and a hefeweizen. Rinn Duin of Toms River, which intends to brew English, Irish and Scottish style ales, was granted a temporary license by the ABC Nov. 30, with final licensing anticipated in mid-December after the brewery’s bottling line is installed. Monterosso, incidentally, released the latest in his entertaining line of podcasts called “Still Crazy After All These Beers”

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

Name: RESORTS, ATLANTIC CITY (00RESS); Width: 60p0; Depth: 5.38 in; Color: Black plus three

recently, this time focusing on the growing popularity of strong ciders. He interviewed Adam Redding of the Gettysburg (Pa.)-based Good Intent Cider at the 2013 Pour the Core Festival in Philadelphia earlier this fall, which was the first in a series of cider events sponsored by Starfish Junction Productions. Monterosso noted that strong ciders are experiencing the same sort of popularity surge they saw about 20 years ago before leveling off, and asked Redding what might be the impetus behind the latest resurgence. “I think some of it is the education that Americans are getting on ciders again, and I think it’s sort of following the tail end of the craft beer movement,” said Redding. “People are looking for other alternatives, which is why they were [originally] turned on to craft beer.” When asked if it’s largely beer drinkers or wine drinkers gravitating toward ciders, Redding replied, “I hope it’s both. I would hope they’re both going to meet somewhere in the middle, because cider tends to span the gap between them.” Finally, Dec. 5, is the 80th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, which was signed into law in 1920. Just think, without it, there would be no Boardwalk Empire on HBO. ■ see more online @

Memorable dining. Spectacular water show. breathtaking views. It’s all here. And nowhere else!

Farewell 2013 By David Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

I

t’s finally beginning to look a lot like the holiday season in Atlantic City’s casino showrooms. It wouldn’t have been easy to say that just a few weeks ago, though. Faced with casino revenues that are about half of what they were six years ago pre-recession and pre-competition, casinos have been very careful about how they spend their money on entertainment, especially during the tricky marketing period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The only possible exception is Borgata, which continues to keep its two main performing venues well stocked with artists who have proven track records. Today, casinos that used to deck the halls with acts virtually every weekend right up until the week before Christmas have cut back on the number of showroom bookings. Basically, it boils down to the supply-vs.demand theory. Sure, there may be enough entertainers out there willing to sell their holiday shows to the gaming halls. That’s the supply-side part of the equation. But it’s the demand part that’s more important. Gone are the heady economic times when people had enough extra bucks that they didn’t have to decide between spending money on gifts or a night on the town — they simply did both. Today, it’s not that easy. So in mid-November, the name that popped up most frequently on the December showroom calendar was “dark.” Oh, there were the usual exceptions, like Kenny Rogers’ annual holiday show visit to the Boardwalk, which he did last weekend at Resorts. Or 1950s and ‘60s hitmaker Neil Sedaka, who played Trump Taj Mahal over the weekend. But it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that December finally began to look pretty entertaining. Here are just a few of the acts that caught my eye. Now call me crazy, but the act that brought a smile to my face when it was announced was Paul Revere and the Raiders, who’ll bring their holiday show to the Atlantic Club Friday and Saturday nights (Dec. 6-7). Still fronted by Revere, who’s (gulp!) 75, the six-man band has a reputation for being one hell of a party band, especially when they run through their hits from the 1960s and early ’70s like “Kicks,” “Hungry,” “Good Thing,” “Just Like Me” and their only No. 1 single, “Indian Reservation.” Although former lead singer Mark Lindsay left the band in 1975 and never returned, at least three of the current Raiders have been playing with Revere for close to 40 years, so they’ve mastered the Raiders songbook. Yes, they still perform in their Revolutionary War soldier uniforms, but I suspect there’ll be

‘Legends’ rocks on. See p. 22.

some holiday trimmings on their waistcoats, especially since they’ll be playing some seasonal songs along with their hits. Borgata is getting into the holiday spirit this weekend as well with two proven seat-fillers from across several generations. Comedian Lewis Black, who never fails to sell out the Music Box, will rant and rave about current events on Friday and Saturday nights, and you can bet he’ll have a few choice words to say about the Obamacare Web site debacle. Also at Borgata on Saturday, chances are (that’s a play on a song title) Johnny Mathis will fill the Event Center with a gang of folks who probably aren’t big Lewis Black fans. They’ll be looking for Mathis’ silky smooth and laid-back voice and the long string of hit singles he had back in the 1960s. And with the number of holiday shows he’s done over a career that spans nearly 60 years, you’ll find a few seasonal chestnuts in his show. A few other shows that I’m looking forward to in December are America’s two most loveable stoners, Cheech and Chong, who’ll be performing in Atlantic City on Dec. 13. While they’ve already played a few gigs in town over the past 18 months, this will be their first since the state-licensed medical marijuana clinic opened in Egg Harbor Township in October. I’m sure if someone on the stage crew at the House of Blues at Showboat tips them off about it, they may deviate from their set list and riff on the subject. Now I was under the impression that comedian Gallagher had announced his retirement after he suffered a massive heart attack a few years ago. But it seems like he may have been a little premature with his announcement. The Golden Nugget has announced a performance of “Gallagher’s Last Smash” for Dec. 14. I wonder if this really is his farewell tour, and what effect it will have on the price of watermelon futures? Also keep in mind that “farewell” tours sometimes only mean farewell for the night. Anyone recall Cher playing her “farewell” tour twice at Boardwalk Hall? I’m just sayin’. ■

n our annual Wish List column last January, the final item was a simple request; more women leading local kitchens. We got what we asked for at Tropicana’s new Casa Taco and Tequila-owned by restaurant/retail magnate George Siganos — in the form of executive chef Jennifer Galligan. The Williamstown native, a veteran of Jose Garces’ Distrito Cantina, has developed a sophisticated, contemporary menu, simultaneously respecting historic foundations of Latino cuisine. Like an intense, made-to-order guacamole, done tableside by well-trained staffers. Combining two whole avocados, tomato, jalapeno, cilantro and plenty of lime juice inside a black stone mortar, the result was a chunky, authentic product. Still-warm tortilla chips arrived without a hint of other flavors, indicating both that they were made recently and in a fryer dedicated strictly to them. (This was later confirmed by Galligan.) Taquitos, tightly wound little bundles of chicken and queso (cheese) were crunchy and bright, presented beneath a blanket of shredded lettuce and diced tomato. An item we’d been jonesing to try — picadillo tacos — since spying it on Casa’s bill of fare way back in July during their opening absolutely failed to disappoint. Soft tacos, presented in a cool little, horizontal serving vessel, were stuffed with a ground beef, potato and golden raisin mix. Seasoned aggressively, the heat and spice were cut artfully by both these added elements, especially raisins. Picadillo, common throughout Latin America, is a masterpiece of hot/sweet cuisine whose ingredients vary from country

to country and even regionally. Galligan’s, uniquely Mexican in origin and style, does honor to that culinary legacy. Tortilla soup, based on traditional Mexican brunch food chilaquines, were an ideal antidote for the frost of this deep November night. A spicy golden chicken broth served as base, with viscosity added via a puree of tortillas, heavily doused by chile sauce. Warm and dense, it was one of the finest soups we’ve sampled this year. Another item from the middle of Casa’s expansive menu, ensalada pepita, utilized tropical mainstay ingredients jicama and mango. Diced and tossed with field greens, bacon and candied pepitas (roasted pumpkin seeds) they worked to add crunch plus a hint of exotic sweetness. Worth mentioning; the portion is immense,

easily enough for two persons, and a real value at less than 10 bucks. Owing largely to the fact that poblanos are our favorite pepper, classic chiles rellenos have always held a special attraction. Casa’s modern, minimalist presentation just might be the very finest we’ve ever encountered. A large, single pepper, packed with dynamic ingredients — chicken, queso mixto, grilled corn and cilantro — served atop a bed of aromatic red chile sauce. The pepper itself was a marvel, possessing all the intricate qualities for which poblanos are renowned. Spicy one moment, full of fruit flavor another, it had been handled more like high art than simply mere produce. Lounging pretty at a jaunty angle on the plate, it did everything but wink at us,

naughty and beguiling. This composition definitively reflects the skill sets possessed by Galligan and her kitchen staff, verifying that refined, feminine food need not suffer from any lack of ferocity or inspiration. Another entrée, carne asada, brought plenty of tender, marinated, bias-sliced skirt steak. Drunken beans, red rice and house-made tortillas rode shotgun. The beef was accompanied by a trio of sauces; green, herbal chimichurri, a chunky house salsa and more of the spectacular red chile sauce also utilized in the rellenos. Simple sweets proved the order of the day after this hefty repast. We split two shiny gelatos, Mexican chocolate and dulce de leche. Both are crafted by another Siganos enterprise, Tazza, located in the main lobby of Caesars. Irony is that we’ve been ogling these creamy delights seemingly forever, without ever sampling. Chocolate, typical of Mexican thought, is a bit more on the savory side, with hints of cinnamon and chile pepper evident. This serves a clear reminder as to just who fashioned and initially developed chocolate, and how it was intended to be consumed. Dulce de leche, honey-colored and luscious, brought another distinct level of sweetness — from condensed milk — than merely the superficiality of sugar. One additional fact; Casa also serves an upscale breakfast daily, including ethnic specialties huevos rancheros and huevos benedictos, a Mexican variant featuring chorizo, avocado and salsa rojo. n

Where to shop for Local Gifts, Stocking Stuffers, Charitable Ideas and more!

A

lthough Hanukkah is over and the children — or your significant other — may have already written their e-mails to Santa this year (or Tweeted him), there are still stocking stuffers to buy, local businesses to patronize, deals to be had, and several days left to get those “last-minute” holiday gifts. According to several stores at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, big this year are cashmere sweaters, over-the-knee-boots (for women); watches (men); Dr. Martens booties, Uggs (for juniors) and anything Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hunger Games: Catching Fire (for the youngsters). Maybe this season is the one where giving during the holidays means supporting a charity close to your heart. Or maybe you have crossed everyone off from your list (lucky you!) with the exception of that uncle you always have a hard time shopping for. Here are some suggestions to make your holiday shopping experience a little easier. Local Gifts Absecon Lighthouse Superstorm Sandy Boardwalk Ornaments The gift shop features laser-cut ornaments custom made from the Inlet section of the Atlantic City Boardwalk that was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. There is also lighthouse apparel, home décor, publications, toys, collectibles, glassware, puzzles, souvenirs and more.

Taylors of Harogate English Breakfast Tea A box of 50 bags is $8.50. Teas from India and Africa are combined to create this classic blend. The taste is full-bodied, rich and refreshing. During the holidays, Absecon’s British Connection also makes plum pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies and Christmas crackers for gifting. Order online at yourbritishconnection.com or stop by 130 New Jersey Ave. in Absecon. A second location is in Ocean City. ‘Hit Me: Fighting the Las Vegas Mob by the Numbers’ by Danielle Gomes and Jay Bonansinga — The daughter of the late Dennis Gomes, who operated and owned Resorts and was in the casino business in Atlantic City and Las Vegas for decades, brings what started as a college writing project to book form. She interviewed her father for dozens of hours about his involvement as a Gaming Control Board enforcer in Vegas and his subsequent role as a key witness in one of the biggest mob busts in gaming history. Dennis Gomes’ Vegas take down of the mob was portrayed in the book and film Casino. (Online: $21.05, hardcover)

Back Is Black

Comic Lewis Black rants his way back to Borgata Dec. 6-7 By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com hen Lewis Black graduated from the “I’ve never looked at what I’m doing as a vehicle for Yale School of Drama in 1980, the clever wordsmith figured on a career something else. I love comedy.” people how stupid it is. I’m just thankful this all worked out because when I started doing stand-up, I didn’t expect this to become my career. It was done on a lark and I enjoyed it so much, I just kept coming back to it. I just kept working at it until I found my voice.” Stand-up has worked well for Black because it’s immediate. A play requires the assistance of many different players, actors, a stage crew and others in order to put on a production. “What I always loved about stand-up is that I could get my work out there as quickly as possible,” Black says. “There’s no gatekeepers at comedy venues and it’s all on me. I look back at how much I loved how quickly I could just take my material right to the stage.” Black might not have used stand-up as a stepping stone to television gigs, but he did make a splash on the small screen. Black has been hilarious when he has appeared in the

consistently strong “Back in Black” segments on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. That led to the late and much lamented Comedy Central series Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil. The short-lived show, which ran for just one season in 2008, was formatted as a mock trial. Comedians were basically acting as lawyers arguing that their client is the root of all evil. Comics argued that Dick Cheney, Paris Hilton and Viagra were the root of all evil. You never knew what such inspired humorists as the late Greg Giraldo, who was an attorney, Andy Kindler, famous for his Just For Laughs festival keynotes or the underheralded Kathleen Madigan were going to do. “It was a great show,” Madigan says. “But there is nobody like Lew. He’s a total original, who is a great comic. I can’t say anything bad about the man except when he dragged me on to a cruise. Lew said, ‘Don’t

as a playwright. After eight years and more than 30 produced plays, Black realized there was another need he had to fulfill. Black, who will return Friday and Saturday (Dec. 6 & 7) at the Borgata, became a stand-up comic. Good call. Black has risen to the top of the comedy echelon. Black is as angry as Louis C.K., as surprising and clever as Demetri Martin, and is also an inventive original. “I enjoyed what I did [a generation ago] but I love being a stand-up comic,” Black tells Atlantic City Weekly. “I’ve never looked at what I’m doing as a vehicle for something else. I love comedy.” Black, 65, is George Carlin cerebral but it’s more about being funny than anything else. “The bottom line is making the audience laugh,” Black says. “That’s the most important part of what I do. I come up with something and then figure out how to make people laugh. I’ll go with a serious topic and just show

you think doing a cruise is a good idea?’ I said, ‘No. Cruises are for people who like to eat and drink excessively. I don’t like schedules, so I don’t like to go on a cruise.” Madigan hates open-water vacations but she likes Black. The same could be said for the aforementioned Carlin. It doesn’t get much better than when one of your heroes validates your work. Black adored Carlin, who admired the former playwright. “Lewis Black is terrific,” Carlin said. “He’s smart, funny and entertaining. He’s one of my favorite comics.” Black’s humor is relatable, such as when he waxes about health care: “It’s crazy about what’s going on in this country with insurance and doctors. Healthcare is so bad here that people are flying out of America for surgery. Who would ever think that would happen? If you told people here that two generations ago, they would have thought you were crazy. Who would have ever thought that you would fly out of here to New Dehli for gallbladder surgery? We have to catch up with the other countries. It’s incredible where America is right now. But it was worse under Bush.” Obamacare is a hot button issue but there are many other issues President Obama and Americans must deal with. “There’s healthcare and so much more,” Black says. “How about America’s infrastructure? The infrastructure of this country sucks. Do you want to worry about being attacked by the bridge you drove over every day? The level of greed [in America] is ridiculous.” The point is that we need to laugh more than ever. Black brings up heavy topics, but he takes us away with his sharp humor. “That’s my job,” Black says. “[And] I’ve found the right job.” Even though Black is a senior citizen, expect him to continue cracking wise for years. “That’s the great thing about being a comic,” Black says. “You don’t have to retire. You can go on for years just as long as you’re funny.” ■

Place Your Bets ... Online Atlantic City’s casinos are the conduit through which New Jersey now operates as the third state to offer licensed Internet gaming. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

38

DECEMBER 5 - 11, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

“The business that would be the first to know if there is an issue is the casino industry, so obviously the casinos that have gotten involved see this as a net benefit, otherwise why would they get in it?”

A

degree of uncertainty is likely to linger regarding how great an impact Internet gaming will have on Atlantic City’s future since the concept was launched Nov. 26, making New Jersey the third state behind Nevada and Delaware to provide licensed online wagering. What seems fairly evident, though, is that Atlantic City’s casinos — through which the state’s online gaming will operate along with their Web site and software partnerships — are clearly convinced that this is the main tool to help reverse steadily declining gaming revenue in A.C. since 2006. Otherwise, says Dr. Israel Posner, executive director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism at the Richard Stockton College of N.J., why would they be working so hard and spending so much money to promote the business? “The business that would be the first

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

to know if there is an issue is the casino industry, so obviously the casinos that have gotten involved see this as a net benefit, otherwise why would they get in it?” says Posner “The casino is always going to evaluate whether the total cost of marketing to a particular customer is worth the revenue associated with that customer, regardless of the source of that revenue.” Speculation has varied from A.C.’s bottom line being boosted by Internet gaming by tens of millions of dollars in the early stages to potentially billions if the business pans out as hoped. Bricks-and-mortar casinos are taxed at an eight percent rate with 1.25 percent going to the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) coffers. Internet gaming would be taxed at roughly double that rate (15 percent; 2.5 to the CRDA). Additionally, A.C.’s 12 bricks-and-mortar casinos see online wagering as a means to establishing new clientele, stay connected to existing

clientele, and bring more tangible business to town through redeemable amenities like hotel rooms, dining and entertainment. “A lot of people are asking what the Internet gaming revenue is likely to be next year, and I think it’s so totally premature to try to project anything like that because it’s like we’re in spring training,” says Posner. “We’re really not even in the on-deck circle for a real game yet, and I think it’s going to take a bit longer than a lot of people who are casual observers might think before this Internet gaming is fully ramped up. “There are many technical issues that, not surprisingly, have to be worked out by the various Internet gaming operators who have been approved with permits. Each casino has the opportunity to brand up to five different ‘skins’ or brands [online sites targeting particular types of games or clientele] and there is a lot of marketing and jockeying taking place. In fact I think there’s some very fierce competition going on, and will be going on in the coming months and years as these different Internet sites are up and marketed. “I think that the revenue is going to slowly ramp up over the years, but the real question is overall profitability. As this thing rolls out and hopefully becomes successful, there are a lot of beneficiaries to a successful business, not the least of which is the casino, but also all the employees and the public revenue associated with taxation. There’s a lot going on, a lot of moving pieces.” Conceivably, if each of the 12 casinos becomes connected with a gaming operator approved by the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, there could be up to 60 different skins in Atlantic City (12 casinos with five sites each). Right now there are only six casinos operating about a half-dozen skins. All players must be at least age 21, can legally open a wagering account (i.e. are not banned from gambling) and are physically within the boundaries of New Jersey. State Senator Raymond Lesniak, the legislator who sponsored the original online gambling bill in New Jersey, is also sponsoring a bill to grant online gaming licenses to overseas nations that would, if approved, operate through A.C.’s online gaming superstructure. “As I understand it [Lesniak]’s saying that he’s hoping the bill would allow foreign operators based in Europe — and there are thousands of Web sites based in Western Europe — to get licensed in New Jersey,” says Posner. “New Jersey’s well known around the world as being one that has a very, very strict regimen for licensing and running a very clean operation. It’s almost like getting a good housekeeping seal of approval. The point of it would be that New Jersey would become known around the world as the place to get licensed in the same way that Delaware is known around the country as the place for corporations to basically to set up their corporate head-

quarters due to various favorable tax and legal features of that state.” Another harbinger of how Internet gaming would be a boon to Atlantic City and the entire state is through the number of jobs it could potentially create. “It’s interesting, when you look at a live casino it’s very obvious to even the casual observer that there is labor and cost with operating that casino, because you can see dealers, technicians, security,” says Posner. “It’s very visible what the costs are and what the jobs are. In the case of the Internet, it’s all behind the screen, and behind the screen involves, on one end, customer service representatives. There will be many people with various issues logging on and staying on and having questions answered, and there will no doubt be support service required. There will be a tremendous amount of marketing support to publicize these Web sites. There is the game-content provider that has to be compensated for the casino licensing for the particular game or set of games. There are promotional dollars that may involve free play to market the products that must be accounted for, so there’s accounting involved — there’s a lot going on behind the screen that is not as obvious to a casual observer.” Another uncertainty might be that if other states adopt Internet gaming, will they siphon business away from Atlantic City in the same way the recent plethora of live casinos have done in neighboring states? “Let’s look at Pennsylvania,” says Posner. “Pennsylvania casinos are all local, regional casinos who attract local players. Atlantic City is a destination that attracts players from a little further away, maybe 100 miles away. Nobody’s going to drive 100 miles to go to Harrah’s Chester or SugarHouse [in Philly], it just doesn’t happen. New Jersey is a very densely populated state, so it becomes relatively easy to market and relatively inexpensive to market to New Jersey residents and a lot of people due to its dense population, particularly in the north. A lot of people can be touched via radio, TV, billboards at a much more efficient way than a broad state like Pennsylvania. “The other piece is that in New Jersey, the Internet provides a convenience vehicle that would be in existence behind the destination. So in a sense New Jersey would have both a convenience vehicle as well as a destination. In the case of Pennsylvania, for example, you only have bricks-and-mortar casinos. If they were to add Internet, it would simply be another convenienceoriented vehicle that could take away from their own bricks-and-mortar businesses, because there you’d be talking about convenience competing against convenience. In New Jersey you’d have convenience incrementally against a destination resort. They’re different businesses.” ■ see more online @

Magnificent Dame

Judi Dench sparkles in touching ‘Philomena’; remembering Paul Walker By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

T

here is a rare group of actors in the universe who never seem to slip up or pick bad projects. They always give a great performance, whether in the central role or in a memorable supporting turn. In the category of fabulous British grande dames there are two ladies who soar above the rest, the amazing Maggie Smith and the remarkable Judi Dench. Since Downton Abbey is still a month away from returning on PBS, it is Dame Judi who is

front and center in Stephen Frears’ Philomena, playing an Irish woman who was forced to give up her baby as a teenager by nuns who essentially ran a baby brokerage. Dench is legendary for playing women with a cutting wit, but in Philomena she constructs a woman whose unending patience and lack of guile make her a gentle soul who has been holding back the heartbreak of a lost son for 50 years. She babbles on about her unassuming life much to the consternation of the recently

fired and cynical journalist Martin Sixsmith (played by Steve Coogan, who also co-wrote the screenplay) she has hired to help track down baby Anthony. Based on true events chronicled in the book, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Sixsmith, both the screenplay by Coogan and Jeff Pope and Frears’ command of the story allows the true pathos of this search to proceed without tugging at our heartstrings too vigorously. While the actions of the nuns, who shamed the teenage mothers into thinking they were bad and didn’t deserve to keep their babies, is horrifying, reminding me of another film about Catholic nuns exploiting vulnerable girls, The Magdalene Sisters, Philomena treats the subject more gently. There’s an odd couple comedy vibe about Philomena and Sixsmith tracking down leads and learning about the life that her child has led, a trail that leads to the United States and encounters with people who can fill in the details she has long dreamed about. Coogan’s Sixsmith is a delightful foil to Philomena. He is annoyed at first by her ramblings as they travel on their quest, and sometimes frustrated that she isn’t angry about how she was treated. However, he comes to realize that there is great strength in her quiet determination, as do we. A story of heartbreak told in the form of an endearing road trip, Philomena allows Judi Dench to prove once again that she is a cin-

It is always painful when we lose someone too soon. Paul Walker, 40, star of the Fast & Furious films with Vin Diesel, died in a car crash last weekend, along with his racing driver partner Roger Rodas. He had just completed a charity event for Reach Out Worldwide, an organization he founded after he volunteered in Haiti in 2010. The event was held for families affected by the typhoon in the Philippines and a tornado in Indiana. The more I read about Walker, an actor who shunned the spotlight and who was a hands on participant in his charity endeavors, the more I realize we have lost a wonderful person as well as a likable movie star. Universal Pictures has announced that a portion of the sales from the DVD, Blu-Ray and digital releases of Fast & Furious 6 will go to Walker’s charity. You can also make a donation to Reach Out Worldwide via the Web site roww.org. n
