‘Velvet Underground & Nico’ - 45th Anniversary

K

ey West, Fla., musician Scott Kirby is regarded highly among Jimmy Buffett fans as well as Buffett himself. Anyone who listens to Sirius XM’s Radio Margaritaville knows his music. The New Hampshire native’s 10th album, slated for an April 15, 2013, release date, is being produced in Somers Point by Lew London at the Charter-Tech High School. Kirby and London have known each other for about 15 years, Kirby tells AC Weekly during a phone chat from Manhattan. “I was playing a gig in Somers Point with Peter Mayer,” says Kirby. “Lew opened for us and we asked him to sit in with us and play fiddle. I think it was The Waterfront. We’ve been playing together a few times a year ever since.” London, who teaches music and recording at Charter-Tech is not only lending his fiddle talents to the new Kirby record, but is giving his students the chance to experience the recording sessions, which have taken place at the state-of-the-art recording studio at the high school for a few weeks. Kirby will finalize his vocal and acoustic guitar parts this week, then will head back to sunny Florida, where he plays frequently. London and Kirby assembled a fine list of musicians for the sessions, including Gabriel Donahue (piano, accordion) from Philadelphia, Michael McAdam (guitar) from Nashville, Jim McConnell (drummer) from Somers Point and Andy Lalasis (bass) from Absecon. The album, Sol Searching, will include nine tracks recorded in Somers Point and one track Kirby cut in Los Angeles last year, “Guys Like Us,” with producer-drummer extraordinaire Russ Kunkel. Virginia harmonica master Gary Green also plays on the album. Kirby hopes that some of the students will either play or lend vocals to the tracks during the overdubbing process. “The students have really been interested in the engineering process,” says Kirby. “It’s been great.”

It’s not every year you get to celebrate the 45th anniversary of one of the most highly regarded albums of all time, so to honor the 1967 masterpiece, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Universal Music / Polydor has assembled six different anniversary re-issues of the Velvets’ debut. The Super Deluxe six-CD set comes with stereo and mono versions of the remastered original album, rare 1966 Scepter Studios recordings, the previously unreleased recordings of Lou Reed and company rehearsing at Andy Warhol’s Factory for the album as well as an unearthed November 1966 live date from Ohio with the original five-member Velvet Underground. The set also comes with Nico’s sublime 1967 album Chelsea Girl. The 88-page booklet and info therein is also outstanding. An historic release for an historic album. — JS

oining a long list of artists who have made recent efforts in aiding those severely affected by the wrath of Sandy is R&B vocalist Terri Showers. Showers, best known for her powerhouse vocals backing up the Bubba Mac Blues Band, is teaming up with ’70s soul group The Stylistics to raise Sandy relief funds with two benefit concerts on Saturday, Dec. 15, and Sunday, Dec. 16. After hearing of the devastation so many families faced in the hurricane’s aftermath, Showers was compelled to take action. “I called on some of my friends for help and together we decided we want to make a difference by helping those who need it most,” said the local songstress. In addition to The Stylistics, whose chart toppers include hits “You Are Everything” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” Showers has worked with many recording artists and performed for the Queen of England and President Bill Clinton. The performance on Saturday will be held at the Shiloh Baptist Church and Community Life Center, 701 Atlantic Ave. in Atlantic City, from 4-6pm and will include Showers, The Stylistics, Bubby Fann and Praise Beyond, among others. St. Peter’s Methodist Church, 501 E. 8th St. in Ocean City will house the Sunday performance, featuring Showers and Chosen, Mandy Decker, Leon Hart and more. A non-perishable food item or a new, unwrapped toy are asked for admission, to be donated to the Food Bank of New Jersey for victims of Hurricane Sandy. These concerts are a great way for families to come support other families in need, while enjoying an entertaining showcase of abundant vocal talent. For more information, contact Showers at 741-1071.

n show business, timing is everything. In casino show business, timing is especially everything when it comes to New Year’s Eve. In a perfect world, if the casinos had their way, the year would always end on a Friday or Saturday. It would never end on a Monday, as it does this year. Because 2012 is going out on a Monday, entertainment offerings are noticeably slim when compared to years that ended over the course of a weekend. “If [New Year’s Eve] falls on a weekend — even if it’s a Sunday — [the casinos] are more inclined to book heavier,” said one booking agent who does business with Atlantic City casinos. “They can make more creative multiple-show deals with the [entertainers] and have them for more than one night. But with New Year’s Eve on a Monday, it looks like the entertainment focus is more centered on the days leading up to [Dec. 31].” Unless there are some last-minute surprises — which is doubtful this late in the game — there are just five headliners working public shows in the casinos on New Year’s Eve along with Life In Color, the big electronic music dance (EDM) party that will be held in a giant tent pitched at Bader Field. This doesn’t include private shows featuring headline artists that casinos often throw on New Year’s Eve for their premium players. As 2012 morphs into 2013, the casino shows will split the gaming generation gap in half. The House of Blues at Showboat, for instance, will present the alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction in its 2,200-seat Music Hall. Revel has set their sight squarely on a younger demographic that’s into EDM by turning its 5,000-capacity Ovation Hall venue into a massive dance club featuring world-class Dutch DJ and EMD producer Tiesto doing the spinning on the big stage. Borgata, which has a private party scheduled for its Event Center, will open up its Music Box for a performance by comedian Billy Gardell, who stars on the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly. Resorts and the Tropicana and Resorts are going back to the beginning and end of the 1970s as Resorts presents the long-running rock band Grand Funk Railroad Dec. 30-31 and the Tropicana offers the latest edition of disco era stalwarts the Village People on Dec. 31. But in the days leading up to Dec. 31, Atlantic City is loaded with mostly contemporary shows. Revel has secured Kanye West for three shows in Ovation Hall Dec. 28-30. West was a lastminute addition to Revel’s summer lineup and sold out a pair of concerts over the July 4th

Because 2012 is going out on a Monday, entertainment offerings are noticeably slim when compared to years that ended over the course of a weekend. holiday weekend. The House of Blues skews all across the demographic spectrum with shows during the three nights preceding Dec. 31. On Dec. 28, the funky, Philadelphia-based band The Roots performs a one-night stand. British dubstep producer and DJ Rusko follows the Roots with a show on Dec. 29 before turning the Music Hall stage over to the re-born early ’90s vocal group Backstreet Boys on Dec. 30. On Dec. 28, R&B singer Chaka Khan headlines the stage of the Concert Venue at Harrah’s Resort, while across the street at Borgata, French DJ and music producer David Guetta mixes things up in the Event Center. Caesars Atlantic City, which seems to be prospecting for a slightly younger audience, joins the year-end festivities on Dec. 29 when it presents the rock band 3 Doors Down in the Circus Maximus Theater. Borgata has booked an artist with Jersey Shore beach sand in his shoes on Dec. 30 when G. Love and his band Special Sauce perform in the Music Box. In addition to the Life In Color dance party at Bader Field on New Year’s Eve, there’s a Dec. 29 show at Boardwalk Hall that’s bound to draw a big crowd: rap stars Future, Fabolous and Teyana Taylor. The Life In Color party on New Year’s Eve — formerly known as Dayglow — bills itself as the world’s largest paint party that combines high-energy EDM with art and big splashes of colorful paint. The event has toured the world since it began on college campuses in 2006. The Atlantic City show will feature DJ Steve Aoki and other EDM artists n

Shops at Historic Smithville — If you are looking for something unique for that hard–to-please person, the shops at Historic Smithville is the place to go. With 71 shops on site, there is much to choose from. A few of our favorites: The Christmas Shoppe is the perfect place if you need an ornament for the annual ornament exchange. With thousands of ornaments and other holiday treasures, you are sure to find something special for the tree. For the foodie on your list, The Cook’s Corner features a wide array of kitchen gadgets and unique food items, including hot sauce, marinades, and coffees. Celebrity Collectables stocks old-time music and movie memorabilia, such as “I Love Lucy,” “Marilyn Monroe,” “Elvis” and “The Three Stooges,” for those craving childhood nostalgia. Trendie Treasures has a wide array of jewelry and accessories for the fashionista on your list, including Pandora and Chamilia-compatible beads. And let’s not forget Tomasello Winery and Gifts, for wine glasses, bottle openers, and specialty wines, for the wine-o on your list. Lenox Outlet in Egg Harbor Township — Shop brand name without paying the hefty price tag. The Lenox Outlet sells various Lenox products, including fine china, ornaments, and glassware for up to 70 percent less than the department stores. Shoppers can’t go wrong with Lenox, a household name and good quality merchandise. And the best part? The recipient will think you spent a lot more than you actually did. “The Walk” - Tanger Outlets in Atlantic City — The Tanger Outlets are the place to go when shopping for the brand-loyal guru on your list, whether you want to pick out something special or surprise your loved one with a gift card to his or her favorite store. Because the stores are outlets, store prices are lower, and coupons are often available. Some of the stores include Coach, Nine West, Guess, Aeropostale, Old Navy, Ralph

Washington Street Mall

Don’t let holiday gift giving stress you out. Lauren, and Forever21. There are more than 120 stores in the strip, so it’s really a onestop shop. Washington Street Mall in Cape May — Make a day of it and go shopping in the Old Dickens village. Several quaint shops and boutiques line the streets. Try the Fudge Shop, which specializes in whipped cream fudge, premium chocolates and macaroons, to satisfy a sweet tooth and pick up some stocking stuffers, or stroll over to the Popcorn Factory for a salty addition to a gift basket. The Popcorn Factory offers traditional flavors, such as Kettle Corn and Caramel, as well as exotic flavors like Candy Caramel Apple and Jalapeño. Before you leave town, pick up a few bars of homemade soap and bath bombs at A Place on Earth to give a special recipient on your list the gift of relaxation. Shopping is a science. It’s all about where and how you shop. If you know the proper methods, you can save money while you spend! First, look at your finances and make a budget. Then, make a list and check it twice: compose a list of who you need to shop for and jot down gift ideas for each person. Check for sales at the stores you frequent most often. Some stores offer “Family and Friends” or similar promotional events, where customers can save up to 25 percent. Also, clipping coupons for your favorite products and stores can save you money. When shopping, don’t hesitate to shop clearance (your recipient will have no idea you paid just a few bucks). For super savings, combine deals. Shop during a sale event and use your coupons! With these tips, you can spend less time stressing and spend more time with the ones you love. (See “Pinching Pennies” online at acweekly. com for holiday meal shopping deals.) ■ see more online @

Heavenly Health Café 581 West Ocean Heights Ave., Somers Point Mon.-Sat., 8am-4pm 601-1700

Marie Peterson and Joan Branella have created a Somers Point café where the food is not just good, but good for you. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

espite being one of the nation’s fastest-growing dining categories, our southern New Jersey region possesses few restaurants fully dedicated to healthful fare. While that “healthful” term may appear broad or vague, there is nothing to be misunderstood about Somers Point’s Heavenly Health Café. As owner Marie Peterson makes clear, “I believe that our bodies are to be preserved.” Peterson — a healthcare professional employed as a medical assistant, and a devout Christian — has developed an integrated message of holistic living and eagerly applied it at this new venture. Located at the triangular intersection of Ocean Heights Avenue and Bethel Road, Peterson has owned the property for more than 15 years, having previously run it as Chubby’s Restaurant. Her return, however, is clearly marked with powerful, portentous omens of success. Most of all, joining her this time is sibling Joan Branella, serving as chef. Branella and Peterson grew up together on Georgia Avenue in Atlantic City’s famed Ducktown district. Their father, also in healthcare, was a pharmacist for many years. Joan rhapsodizes on her family’s Italian traditions, saying, “We didn’t eat anything out of a can, and everybody ate the same way.” These days, she runs her first professional kitchen — ensconced in a wide, subterranean space below the dining area — with the same philosophy. “Everything is made here,” says Joan. Together, the sisters seem to radiate a sort of magical symmetry that bodes well for the future. Raven-haired and energetic, Marie evinces the sort of customer-service traits that endear patrons to establishments. Watching her interact with diners during an early morning interview, we witnessed a rare level of professionalism. “I’ve been in this industry before, and I know you can lose people before you get them,” she says. Their food has been painstakingly sourced — the chicken has no hormones or antibiotics, the eggs are free-

“I don’t produce what I won’t eat.” range, the turkey is used for bacon and sausage, and no red meats are served. All produce comes from respected Northfield purveyor B.F. Mazzeo, the bread from Atlantic City’s nearly century-old bakery Formica Brothers, the flour is unbleached, jellies and jams contain no high fructose corn syrup, only real maple syrup — an amber liquid that is one of nature’s most sublime ingredients — and all diners reap the rewards of such a careful selection process. The beauty of the maple syrup was evidenced in a simple, magnificent roasted apple we sampled. A luscious Granny Smith had been slowly cooked until rendered soft, laced with maple syrup and a crunchy, sticky layer of walnuts — sweet, seasonal fare that also just happens

to be quite good for you. On the subject of seasonality, Joan specifically mentions her made-from-scratch soups as being a source of particular satisfaction. On this day it was a roasted red pepper, but a few others she’ll be serving include lentil, chicken pastina, Italian wedding, butternut squash, and kale with white beans. Currently open six days weekly from 8am-4pm, the sisters plan to expand and offer dinner starting in spring. The facility, already having been booked for several private parties, is a high-ceilinged, pleasantly lit room with a capacity for about 50. A petite lunch counter and wide, expansive deli cases line the food-prep side. Walls and furniture, bathed in shades of eggshell and hunter green, create a mood of gentle calmness. This mirrors Marie’s personal mission, one of education. “I don’t produce what I won’t eat,” says Marie. Currently available are a little more than a dozen breakfast items, covering all standard egg/omelet, pancake, French toast and oatmeal possibilities. Lunch offerings are a half-dozen or so sandwiches plus a similar number of grilled paninis and salads. Among those we found most novel were a roasted turkey breast, cranberry chutney and brie sandwich, and a pair of salads — one of roasted beets, baby arugula, pear, almonds and goat cheese in red wine vinaigrette, and another combining spinach, craisins (a cranberry-raisin blend) and almonds with a poppy seed dressing Heartier eaters aren’t left out either, as Heavenly Health serves multiple burgers like a Greek turkey variant with olives and feta, another of black beans, pepper jack cheese and caramelized onions, a balsamic-glazed Portobello mushroom, a veggie burger and fresh tuna with wasabi mayo burger. But the special relationship between these two talented women is clearly what makes Heavenly Health a unique addition to the local food scene. “She had the idea and I came on board to help her,” Joy says of Marie. “She’s fabulous!” ■

ome area establishments go the extra mile by supplementing their discounted Happy hour prices with live music and entertainment. Ri Ra Irish Pub in the Trop Quarter does a latenight Happy hour from 11pm-closing (2am Sun.-Wed., 3am Thurs.-Sat.) that includes acoustic solo acts every Wednesday, and original and cover bands most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Ri Ra also offers $6 cosmos, appletinis and choctinis during this time, along with $5 Captain-nCokes, $4 well drinks and beer specials. Johnny’s Café in Margate has pianists entertaining seven nights a week starting 5pm (overlapping their 4-7pm Happy hour), among them Johnny D’Angelo, Joe Mancini and “Bill the Man.” Every Wednesday and Sunday singer-entertainer Benny Marsala is at Johnny’s from 6pm to closing. Sofia restaurant on Amherst Avenue in Margate hosts Happy hour every 4-7pm Sunday through Thursday (and 4-6pm Friday) that includes DJ entertainment during its $5 martini night every Wednesday, and live piano music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Multiinstrumentalist Don Ellsworth performs every Thursday night at Sofia when $20 black Angus steaks and half-priced bottles of wine are featured. This Friday, Dec. 14, Village Whiskey at Revel will host the acoustic quartet Pressing Strings to perform for free starting 9:30pm. The group plays a mix of covers and originals, and has opened for some big-name headliners. Other local hot-spots for Happy hours include Tomatoe’s in Margate (on Amherst Avenue), the Smithville Inn and Fred & Ethel’s in Smithville’s historic district, St. George’s Pub and Cellar 32 in Brigantine, Yesterday’s and Obadiah’s in Marmora, Brick House Pub, Cousin Mario’s and the Mays Landing Country Club in Mays Landing, East Bay Crab & Grill, Library III, Chickie’s & Pete’s, and A Touch of Italy in EHT, Bulldog’s Bar and Grill in EHC, and Girasolé, Maloney’s Uptown, Teplitzky’s at the Chelsea, and the Tun Tavern in Atlantic City. any employees at Caesars Entertainment’s four properties in Atlantic City — Caesars, Bally’s, Harrah’s Resort and Showboat — were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Now they will be getting help thanks to the culinary skills of acclaimed chef Chris Scarduzio. Scarduzio’s Table 31 Restaurant, 1701 JFK Blvd. in Philadelphia, in a partnership with Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City chefs and the Star Group, will host “Savor for Sandy,” a special culinary event to raise money for Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City employees affected by Hurricane Sandy, on Sunday, Dec. 16 from 6-11pm. All of the event’s proceeds go directly to the Wish Upon a Hero Foundation. Tickets for “Savor for Sandy” are available from savorforsandy.eventbrite.com and prices are at $100 for general admission; $250, which includes admission and access to the Patron VIP Lounge; $500, which includes the above and a stay at Caesars Atlantic City, and $1,500, which includes admission, VIP Lounge, stay at Caesars and a Viking Cooking Class at Harrah’s Resort with Chef Scarduzio on Thursday, Jan. 10. “I jumped at the opportunity to give back to the community and to help those who are in dire need by offering to host ‘Savor for Sandy,’” says Scarduzio, executive chef and proprietor at Table 31 in Philadelphia, and in Atlantic City, at Caesars’ Mia and Scarduzio’s Steak Sushi Lounge at Showboat. “I know people from Philly and South Jersey will rally around this cause and bring their appetite to support their coastal neighbors, all while enjoying a wonderful night of great food and company.” By utilizing the Wish Upon a Hero Foundation, funds raised at Savor for Sandy will help Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City employees recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. Then, proceeds from “Savor for Sandy” will be used to make approved wishes come true by giving families up to $1,000 per household. “We are honored to have a partner like Chris Scarduzio; his passion for the Jersey Shore and commitment to the surrounding communities of Atlantic City is as genuine as the food in his restaurants,” says Don Marrandino, eastern division president for Caesars Entertainment Atlantic City. “On Dec. 16, celebrities and renowned culinary talent will all come together in Philadelphia for an evening of fundraising which will go a long way to helping raise much needed funds for Caesars

Favorite Holiday Movies My 10 favorite flicks to watch during the holiday season By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

W

ith only one new movie opening last week, Playing For Keeps, which ended up with a beyond horrible two-percent approval rating on the movie site RottenTomatoes.com, I had no reason to go to the movies last weekend. Instead, here’s a list of my 10 favorite movies to watch during the holidays in alphabetical order.

Bell, Book and Candle (1958)

This film is good for Christmas and Halloween since it is about modern witches and warlocks in New York City set during the holiday season. Stars ravishing Kim Novak as a witch who falls in love with the book publisher played by Jimmy Stewart. With Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs and Elsa Lanchester.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

Yes, it is not technically a movie, but is the holiday season complete without watching this classic half-hour cartoon?

This classic British version of Charles Dickens’ classic is my favorite CC movie starring Alistair Sim as the grumpy miser who must be taught a lesson in Christmas cheer. I also enjoy the 1984 TV movie with George C. Scott as Scrooge and the 1999 TV version with Star Trek’s Patrick Stewart.

Home Alone (1990)

The movie that made Macaulay Culkin a star. He’s a clever kid stuck with the dilemma of the title who does battle with two inept burglars (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern).

The House Without A Christmas Tree (1972) Finally available on made-for-TV tearjerker girl (Lisa Lucas) who a Christmas tree, but

(Jason Robards) has always refused because it makes him remember his late wife. With Mildred Natwick as grandma.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Adorable Natalie Wood doesn’t believe in Santa Claus until Macy’s Department store Santa Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), comes into her life. With Maureen O’Hara as her “bah humbug” mom who also comes around to believing in Santa Claus. Miracle on 34th Street (1994) This is the rare remake that catches some of the magic of the original, with Richard Attenborough as Santa, Mara Wilson as the enchanting child and Elizabeth Perkins as the mom. Carol

(1992) Michael Caine plays Ebeneezer Scrooge, while Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy take on the roles of his long-suffering employee, Bob Cratchit, and Cratchit’s loving wife. One of the best of the Muppet movies.

Joyeux Noel (2005)

It’s Christmas Eve, 1914. In the trenches during World War 1, the German, French, and Scottish soldiers create their own moment of peace during the holiday night, learning to appreciate their shared humanity. The film is based on a true story.

New Year’s Eve (2011)

I’m a sucker for the cliché-ridden feel good movies that Garry Marshall has been churning out for decades and this one, a series a vignettes set during the holiday season, has a great cast topped by Hilary Swank, Halle Berry, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron and Jessica Biel. ■ see more online @
