nce again Ocean City is ringing in the New Year with an array of events and entertainment on its annual First Night celebration on Monday, Dec. 31. The family-friendly action kicks off with the Hegeman String Band at the Music Pier at 4pm where there will be face painting and design-your-own New Year hats. Trout Fishing in America and Tommy Cash will follow as the venue’s entertainment through the night. The Civic Center will host unique inflatables for the kids from 4-7pm, with the widely loved Fabulous Grease Band taking center stage from 9-11pm. Families are invited to enjoy a taste of the Jersey shore as provided by the Ocean City Restaurant Association at Ocean City High School’s cafeteria featuring a menu that gives guests a savory sample of Ocean City cuisine. Dinner will be served from 4-8pm and is $20 for adults, $8 for children, with reservations available online at eatinocnj.com. Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and Island Adventure Golf will be open for a rare chance to enjoy the rides and mini-golf in the winter season. Harmony Show Choir, OC POPS, and The Burchfields will be featured at the Tabernacle, along with story-telling and more from 5-11pm. Other participating venues include Ocean City Primary School, St. Peter’s Sanctuary, and the Ocean City Senior Center. The night’s festivities will culminate at midnight with a spectacular fireworks display that will light up the shore skyline. Admission to all events will be noted by the First Night 2013 button, available at firstnightocnj.com for $15, with a complimentary Jitney service offered for button holders from 5pm-midnight between the Transportation Center, 9th St. and Haven Ave., and 7th St. Parking Lot, 7th St. and Central Ave. For more information visit firstnightocnj.com or call 525-9300.

Revel has something going on at nearly every one of its venues, including live flamenco dancing at Amada restaurant, and parties at Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly (starting at $100 per head, $25 after midnight) and HQ nightclub with DJ Bambi (9pm, $125). The Casbah nightclub at Trump Taj Mahal has always been a hot spot on NYE, and this year its Lucky 13 party carries a mere $20.13 cover charge. There will be 13 flavors of vodka offered, 13 prizes awarded after midnight, and every 13th person in line gets in free. Additionally, the Taj Mahal Arena Party starts 9:30pm at the Mark G. Etess Arena. The $139 per person cover includes an open bar, dinner, dancing and live music with the Steve Delisi Orchestra. If a swanky, stylish and perhaps slightly more subdued atmosphere is more your pleasure, Ono Restaurant at the Atlantic Club will feature revered pianist Bud Noble on NYE from 9pm-1am. The Chelsea hotel will have several packages available, including parties at C5 nightclub and the Crystal Room with general admission entry starting at $65. Also outside the casinos, the Tun Tavern has an interesting offering that includes a five-course dinner with a beer pairing for each course, hosted by Tun brewmaster Tim Kelly. It is $79.95 per person and includes a DJ and dancing from 9pm-1am. Caffe Luciano in Longport will also offer a five-course dinner and festive atmosphere after peak dining hours are over, including live music by the Big House Band that boasts a killer rhythm section covering soul, funk, jazz, rock, pop and dance. ome casinos seem to have taken the safe route in booking their headline acts on the Friday and Saturday leading up to New Year’s Eve this year, as the mass singing of “Auld Lang Syne” happens to fall on a night that causes entertainment directors everywhere to cringe — Monday. But there will be no bucking of the trend when it comes to New Year’s Eve parties in and around Atlantic City. There will be no simulated or mock ball drop on Dec. 29 just to accommodate those who can’t see themselves frothing into a festive frenzy on a Monday night. No, the biggest night for parties perennially in Atlantic City history (Halloween might give it a run for its money) will take place Dec. 31 — Monday (barring the Apocalypse) — so be there or be in Times Square. In selecting some of the more unique NYE party alternatives — a more detailed and comprehensive list will appear in the next (Dec. 27) issue of AC Weekly — foremost on the list is this oddity at Bader Field that might have made everyone over 40 wonder if they would ever engage in such activity if they were still 23 and carefree. Headlined by famed DJ/ electronic music producer Steve Aoki, the event is dubbed Life in Color and billed as “the world’s largest paint party.” It is essentially a huge concert where DJs blast electronic dance music while dousing the crowd in neon, multi-colored (and presumably non-toxic) paint. Attendees are encouraged to dress in as much white as possible. Tickets started at $99 and some ticket outlets were listed as sold out, so it seems plausible that many of today’s less youthful might have been interested in giving it a try if they could turn back time. It is far more likely, though, that the middle-aged-and-up set would rather dig the gig going on at Boogie Nights at the Tropicana, where ’70s sensation The Village People will be performing on New Year’s Eve. Tickets start at $45 and the party starts 9:30pm. As always, it is one of many parties taking place inside the Trop on NYE, with others happening at The Palm, Anthem, Planet Rose, Providence, Ri Ra and Tango’s. Likewise, Borgata has its usual slate of killer parties scheduled at Mixx and mur. mur nightclubs (both starting 9pm at $50 per head), and Caesars Entertainment properties that prove prime places to party on

Who in the Hall
Among A.C.’s future entertainment focal points will be the legendary Brits performing their rock opera ‘Quadrophenia’ at Boardwalk Hall in 2013. By David J. Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com
W
ith acts stretching across the broad spectrum of the entertainment world, the word “eclectic” is often used to describe the artists and attractions shuttling in and out of the various entertainment venues. Perhaps the most jarring example of the diversity of artists set to appear on local stages during the first quarter of 2013 can be found at Boardwalk Hall during one 24-hour period in late February. On Feb. 22, The Who — those aging but still relevant British rockers who stole the show at the recent 12-12-12 fundraising concert in New York — will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of their trailblazing album Quadrophenia by performing it in its entirety, along with some of the group’s biggest songs. The following afternoon, the the Mummers Show of Shows brings the prize-winning string bands, fancies and comic brigades to the big room on the Boardwalk for a single afternoon performance. Following a pattern that began years ago, Atlantic City’s gaming resorts continue to book fewer shows during the first three months of the new year. But casino show business is hardly no business at all. Predictably, properties like Borgata and the House of Blues at Showboat have the most active lineups. Borgata is relying on many of the acts that have proven track records at filling seats in both its concert venues and casino gaming tables. Rob Thomas, the lead singer and songwriter of Matchbox Twenty, seemingly can’t get enough of the casino’s Music Box. He’ll fly solo in the 1,000-seat venue Jan. 18-20 and then return with Matchbox Twenty on Feb. 23. Several shows during the first three months of the year are ones that had been postponed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in late October, including Steve Martin and the bluegrassmountain band Steep Canyon Rangers, who are now set to perform at Caesars on March 15. A few casinos are holding off on announcing acts for the beginning of the year. With rumors of the impending sales of both the Atlantic Club and Trump Plaza casino hotels, neither has announced any headline entertainment. And Revel, which has offered only sporadic but generally huge acts since September, is keeping its bookings under wraps for now. The LP Debuted in Atlantic City

utside the Traymore Hotel in Atlantic City, the crash of waves on the beach provided a soundtrack for the start of summer in June 1948. Inside the luxury hotel, the sound of music and history were being made at the two-day convention held by Columbia Records. More than 400 distributors and related salespeople had come to the hotel at Boardwalk and Illinois Avenue to hear about Columbia’s revolution in sound with a formal demonstration of the long-playing record. As the introduction of television to American homes after World War II changed a nation’s viewing habits, the unveiling of the vinyl album would forever alter the delivery of music. Columbia had spent most of the 1940s working on the development of the longplaying record to replace the 78 rpm disc and intensified its efforts after World War II ended. The advantage of the vinyl LP, which played at 33-and-a-third revolutions per minute, could accommodate 22 minutes per side, as opposed to about four minutes a side for the 78. The LP also had the advantage of durability. “The vinyl LP revolutionized the way Americans listened to music and the way artists and their labels recorded music,” says Sean Wilentz, author of the recently published 360 Sound: The Story of Columbia Records (Chronicle Books). In Atlantic City, Columbia laid the foundation for introducing the LP to the public via its sales staff with a mix of music and technology. The presentations included “dramatic skits which spared no humorous digs at competing record companies” and the distribution of special booklets to all sales rep-

Paul Southard, sales manager for Columbia, came up a special way to drive home the sonic advantages of the LP. While he delivered his speech, Southard made sure it was the same length as “The Nutcracker Suite,” which took up the length of one side of an album, and played in the background as he spoke. When Southard completed his speech and removed the stylus from the LP, the distributors at the Traymore erupted with an extended round of applause. Howard Scott, a Columbia Records employee who has been described as a “founding father of the long-playing record,”
attended the convention in Atlantic City. His role was to let the sales representative know when to adjust the sound of the “The Nutcracker Suite” recording during Southard’s speech. It was “the record that changed the music business,” Scott recalled in a 1998 interview with The New York Times. No Columbia Records convention would be complete without entertainment and the company featured some of the label’s biggest acts that spanned the spectrum of American music. On the convention’s first night, jazz drummer Gene Krupa led his orchestra through a vibrant set while country singer Roy Acuff ran through a series of hits, including the
“Tennessee Waltz.” On the second evening, pop vocalist Buddy Clark, known for his duets with Doris Day, and the hits “Linda” and “Matinee,” and childhood singing sensation Toni Harper were among the featured acts. After the convention, consumers were quick to embrace the LP, boosted by a national advertising campaign. “The label worked hard to make sure the public would accept the new format, going to the trouble of helping to design and market adapters that allowed existing phonographs to play at 33 and a third,” says Wilentz, a professor of history at Princeton University. By the end of 1948, Columbia had sold more than a million long-playing records, a number that would climb in subsequent years. Sales of Broadway cast albums and classical music were the biggest beneficiaries. The LP, coupled with the development of the 45 rpm single would spell the end of the 78. To better market the album, Columbia created the Columbia Record Club to allow people to buy LPs through the mail, much like the Book of the Month Club did with hardcover volumes of fiction and nonfiction. South Jersey enjoyed the economic benefits of the LP in 1961 when Columbia Records established a manufacturing plant for albums in Pitman, about 20 miles from the border of Atlantic County. The plant was a big employer in the region, providing jobs to 1,600 people by the mid-1970s. While the plant shut down in 2011 as sales of compact discs fell and digital downloads increased, the LP had left an indelible mark on American popular culture and would remain the choice of many audiophiles. “It’s without question Columbia’s most important technological innovation,” says Wilentz. n

In the days leading up to the Savor for Sandy event, Wish Upon a Hero collected specific “wishes” from Caesars employees that consist of items they need replaced most. Proceeds from Savor for Sandy — through funds raised from ticket sales, a silent auction and a cash bar — were then applied toward making wishes come true by giving families up to $1,000 per household to help them recover from the devastation. Chateau Ste. Michelle wine and Patron tequila donated many of the holiday spirits, and all silent auction items were donated through the generosity of local businesses. Wish Upon a Hero is the world’s largest social helping network. The peer-to-peer platform connects people in need with people willing to help. Wishes range from basic needs to medical and financial needs. Heroes can help by donating money, offering a service, or purchasing a specific item. f you’ve got an inveterate food fanatic on your holiday shopping list, someone who truly appreciates all things gastronomic, this column is for you. We’ve asked some of the region’s finest chefs to share their tips for holiday gift giving, both items they would enjoy receiving, or ones they might likely offer up to others. Sammy Demarco, Sammy D’s, Harrahs — I would love any rare cigars, gins or scotch … and I’ll send you my address. Give the gift of knowledge and pair it with taste — a cookbook and a bag of tea. Gift cards to chef tastings or events such as ‘B.R. Guest.’ We also do a lot of cooking classes, chef demonstrations, wine tastings that you can get a gift card for. Cool stocking stuffers might be flavored salts, vinegars, oils and the like. Jose Garces, Revel — Garces Trading Company Chocolate Bars. Our chocolate bars are a great gift. The fun and unusual flavors set them apart from other artisanal chocolates, and I think they’re a wonderful showcase for some of our unusual ingredients and also for how versatile high-quality chocolate can be. If it’s someone close to me I find out what they really like and enjoy, a hobby item or if they like chocolate I might for example make them a chocolate torte or buy a good gourmet product. Vermont
has all kinds of artisan gourmet products or maybe nice a piece of pottery serving platter. I paint so I might paint a picture of their home and give to them. One of my new favorite cakes to make is a tres leches cake (three milk cake). This is different and outstanding. With a good imagination you can be the star at your next cookout. Michael Charlianza, Bobby Flay Steak at the Borgata — I’ve been asking for the “Big Green Egg” for three years straight. It’s a ceramic dome cooker, grill, and smoker. On the expensive side, but the benefits are endless. Two additional suggestions from this columnist — first, a microplane. No, not some kind of tiny aircraft but an elongated grating tool, originally used in carpentry. The device’s straight shape (think of a ruler with a sharp shredding surface) allows for easier use than traditional box graters, and a greatly reduced risk of inadvertently including pieces of your knuckles, too. Light and ergonomic in design, this will become your preferred implement for cheeses, citrus rinds or shaved chocolate. Also, a tube of quality vanilla pods, preferably from Madagascar. Powerful and intoxicating, real vanilla is one of life’s still affordable luxuries. It’s perfectly seasonal in sweets or fruit dishes, and indispensable for luxurious French toast. ■ see more online @

f nothing else, 2012 was a year of partnerships and coming together in the Atlantic City region. While the media reported on declining casino revenues, Revel’s first year, Hurricane Sandy and a “destroyed” Boardwalk, the people and entities in the region came together, not only to dispel myths about Atlantic City, but also to make the city and area better for the future. From the CRDA and the ACA, the ACA and ACCVA, Mohegan Sun and Resorts, Stockton (and just about everyone), charity events for the Red Cross following Sandy
and even the federal and local governments (minus the Langford-Christie saga that continues) were working together in new and exciting ways. Partnerships were forged this year that will have a lasting impact on Atlantic City and its environs. The year 2012 was also one of the busiest summers for casino concerts in history, while new entertainment options, casino offerings, non-gaming options and big-time festivals helped make the new ‘DO AC’ campaign an even more robust one. MELISSA ETHERIDGE – Oct. 19 – Singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge brings a gamut of emotions and a fierce rock attitude to Caesars’ stage. 8. CARRIE UNDERWOOD – Nov. 9 – Underwood’s extravaganza, including a floating stage and hot rising star Hunter Hayes, draws fans hoping to forget Hurricane Sandy for a night at Boardwalk Hall. At the show, the pop star announces that she would be donating all proceeds from the concert to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. 9. AEROSMITH – Nov. 23 – Thanksgiving weekend kicks off with Aerosmith’s rocking performance at Revel. 10. ‘DO AC’ DEBUTS • SLOGAN CHANGE – Jan. 19 – Atlantic City’s slogan ‘Always Turned On’ is officially turned off after eight years, and a new slogan — ‘DO AC’ — is in the works. • NJ TOURISM CONFERENCE – March 14 – At the conference, the Atlantic City Alliance (ACA) announces plans to re-brand and market Atlantic City anew with new advertising, entertainment, and other ventures. • ‘DO AC’ – April 13 – The Atlantic City Alliance begins to promote non-gaming attractions in the city in hopes to lure more visitors to town this summer and beyond with the launch of the ‘DO AC’ campaign. • ‘DO AC’ CAMPAIGN STICKS – July 5 –The ‘DO AC’ carmagnet giveaway, part of the Atlantic City Alliance’s marketing campaign to boost tourism, grows into a craze, with a large number of cars hauling the eye-catching magnets.

AC FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL – July 26-29 – The sold-out annual event takes place across all four Caesars Entertainment resorts and features celebrity chef participants, namely, Anne Burrell, Robert Irvine, Paula Deen, Aaron Sanchez, Buddy Valastro and Andrew Zimmern. 4. Dennis Gomes, CEO and co-owner of Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino Hotel, died on Thursday, Feb. 23, of unconfirmed causes in Philadelphia at the age of 68. Gomes’ legacy in Atlantic City and the gaming universe is extraordinary. “My family and I are deeply shocked and saddened by Dennis’ untimely passing,” said Morris Bailey, Gomes’ Resorts partner. “Dennis was a man of integrity who embraced all who knew him with respect and love. We have not only lost a business partner who was an industry leader and visionary — we have lost a friend and family member. We are committed to continuing Dennis’ vision for Resorts and Atlantic City, and our success will be a tribute to his memory. Our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara, Aaron and the entire Gomes family.” Aside from bringing his vision and long-time gaming experience to Resorts, purchasing it in 2010, Gomes also was responsible for The Quarter at Tropicana, which kicked off (literally) a new era for Atlantic City. Gomes was a true trailblazer in both Las Vegas and Atlantic City. As a gaming investigator he was a legend in the business, with the Martin Scorsese film Casino based on his story involving busting the mob in Vegas. Nicholas F. Moles, vice president and general counsel for the casino, said upon learning of Gomes’ death: “Dennis was truly the most giving, gracious and kind-hearted human being. Everyone who knew him loved him. We are all blessed to have worked with him, to call him our friend and to be part of his family. We are devastated by this loss and our prayers are with the Gomes family during this time. We are committed to continuing Dennis’ vision for Resorts.”

1. STEEL PIER OPENS WITH NEW OWNERS. — On Aug. 3, it is announced that Steel Pier Associates, LLC, has taken ownership of Atlantic City’s famed Steel Pier from Trump Entertainment Group, Inc. A staged, multi-million-dollar renovation project is underway through 2015. 2. LPGA RETURNS — On June 3, Stacy Lewis wins the ShopRite LPGA Classic at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club. Lewis held the lead wire-to-wire, winning by four strokes over Katherine Hull and becoming the top-ranked American golfer on LPGA tour. 3. BOARDWALK EMPIRE SEASON 3 — On Saturday, Sept. 15, the HBO original series Boardwalk Empire Season Three debuts at Caesars. The on-air third-season premiere is shown on HBO the following night, Sunday, Sept. 16. Season Four is soon announced. 4. ATLANTIC CITY RODEO — Held March 30-April 1 at Boardwalk Hall, the second annual rodeo draws exceptionally large crowds to see many of the nation’s top professional riders compete for $56,000 in prize money. Many of the casinos and community partners tie special rodeo-themed promotions and events into the three-day extravaganza. 5. FINAL ATLANTIC 10 MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT — Held March 9-11 at Boardwalk Hall, the 14-team, Division-1 tournament sees St. Bonaventure defeat Xavier 67-56 on March 11 for the 2012 A-10 title. Having taken place in Atlantic City for five years, the tournament transfers to Brooklyn in 2013. 6. MARGARITAVILLE @ RESORTS — On Nov. 14 construction kicks off on the Jimmy Buffett-themed Margaritaville project at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. The project, which is expected to be completed by Memorial Day weekend 2013, includes a 16,000-square foot Landshark Bar & Grill, which will be located across from the casino. 7. ‘ARTLANTIC’ PUBLIC ART PROJECT — A dedication ceremony takes place Nov. 9 for the Boardwalk’s new multi-phase, five-year public art project ‘ARTLANTIC.’ 8. BOARDWALK HALL LIGHT SHOWS — Boardwalk Hall debuts a sophisticated, 3-D light-projection show, “Duality,” that brought the Hall’s historic façade to life on July 4 and every night throughout the year. “Winter Sweet” is the seasonal replacement for the outdoor light show, which premieres on Dec. 1 and will run through March. 9. ATLANTIC CITY AIR SHOW — For its 10th anniversary on Aug. 17, the Atlantic City Air Show moves from midweek to Friday and draws record crowds. Next year’s show is slated for Wed., June 26, 2013. 10. SOMERS POINT BEACH CONCERT SERIES — The Somers Point Beach Concert Series celebrates 20 years and hosts some of the best rock, blues, zydeco and New Orleans musicians on the planet for free Friday evenings during the summer. Performers include multi-award winning blues violinist Lionel Young, Commander Cody, and Walter Trout.

Have any of your views of Atlantic City changed since you started working with the ACA? Anything that surprised you? Yes, I think I’ve been a little surprised at some of the depth of the misperceptions about Atlantic City [outside of Atlantic City]. One thing, maybe because it’s so fresh in my mind having just done these focus groups in Philadelphia, I just think Atlantic City has this spectacular physical setting. The ocean, the beaches, they’re very nice and beautiful. And I guess Sandy made them even bigger, which has yet to be discovered by the world. But I sat in these groups and had these people say to me that the beaches aren’t clean and not well maintained. And they have no other reference outside of word of mouth. So, the depth of the word of mouth bad-mouthing of Atlantic City continues to surprise me.

n the fall of 2011 it was announced that a former Aramark executive from Pennsylvania had been named the CEO of the new non-profit Atlantic City Alliance. The ACA, funded by Atlantic City’s casinos, was created to bring in more visitors to the city and change the perception of the resort. In 2012, Atlantic City and its environs have experienced the impact Liza Cartmell has had on the city and its perception as it pertains to visitors and locals. To recap her first full year heading up the ACA, Cartmell spoke to AC Weekly.
How has your first year in the trenches in Atlantic City with the Atlantic City Alliance been? And can you give a recap of some of the ACA accomplishments this year? I would just say it’s been frenetic. I mean it’s just been non-stop. It started with hitting the ground and just getting added on board immediately and recruiting a team to come on, and really kind of creating the team from scratch. [Then we launched] the [DO AC] campaign in April, and got that out and broadly distributed through all the different media forms. Then [we] really starting to ramp up PR initiatives and event initiatives. [Also] getting things in place like the “3D” shows, launching the first one in July and then we just launched the second one Dec. 1. Getting the art program [ARTlantic] in place, the partnership with the CRDA in terms of getting those local enhancements in place that we feel will enhance the visitor experience as well as drive a lot of media attention. Getting the volleyball up and running, doing the fireworks, and then of course, most recently dealing with the aftermath of Sandy and the need to really be aggressive around reframing people’s perceptions about the damage to Atlantic City and making sure the word gets out that we are open for business and now launching the new incentive for the subsidies for trying to attract business conventions.

“I think that there are some very discreet and accurate statistical measures that show increase in economic activity.” What long-term effects do you think Sandy will have on Atlantic City and Jersey shore in general? Well, I think it obviously had a very different impact depending upon where you were on the New Jersey shore, but I know that even the way the media has portrayed, both nationally and internationally, the New Jersey shore as one lump sum as being just decimated, and the picture of the Seashore Heights roller coaster is sort of the symbol that they’ve now established as the “Jersey shore.” So, combating that to the extent that it is a) not accurate for this destination, and then b) making sure that we don’t continue to suffer diminished visitation because people don’t think we’re open. Sure, which amazingly is still a problem. It’s a big problem. Well, we’ve done a whole series of new PR. We’ve re-shot the commercial. We’ve re-done radio. We reproduced new print. We hired people to do all sorts of video and photo images so we could put out storylines. We’re going into media that we hadn’t been in, in terms of either geography or style or messaging. It’s just been a full-out push. We’re battling uphill because everybody was watching the Weather Channel report Atlantic City had been destroyed. The Sandy onslaught appeared and then everybody stopped watching TV, either because they lost power or because the storm was gone. So you don’t get that opportunity for that 100-percent attention and so as a result we’re trying to get in front of people who you don’t normally get in front
New Jersey community so that as they rebuild we can make sure that we retain the people in New Jersey. So upside really depends on what happens with retaining our core, and then being able to build out extra on top of it.
of trying to fix word of mouth, trying to correct people who are making inaccurate statements even well after the fact, such as the Al Roker story. People, out of sympathy, refer to it as “Oh, my gosh, New Jersey, and Atlantic City [has been washed away].” And it’s like, “No, that’s not even a picture of us! That’s Seaside Heights.” We just did focus groups yesterday, and we had a group of middle aged, 35-50, people. We had a woman who had actually been to Atlantic City two weeks ago and sat there and swore to the other six people that the Boardwalk was largely all gone. She was in Revel looking out at the inlet side, and said, “Oh yeah, it’s destroyed, it’s gone.” We were trying not to jump out of our chairs and say “No! You’re totally wrong!” And she had all other six people in the room saying, “What a shame, how terrible.” That’s crazy. Yeah, it was. Later on she admitted, because we rushed and got the picture of the New York Times ad we did and brought it in and we showed it to them all, and she said, “You know, I did go to Bally’s and there was that section in front of it, that was intact.” We said, “No, this picture isn’t even the Bally’s section!” Do you anticipate increased visitors next summer in relation to Sandy? I mean, I think it’s a real possibility. Right now we’re grappling with the fallout of the people who would typically travel more distance to get here and we don’t want to lose them. We want to retain that and potentially support the rest of the
How would you gauge the success of the “DO AC” campaign in terms of attracting new visitors — before Sandy? I think, “really steady progress” would be the way I would describe it. Statistically, from a brand perception, we were just going over, before the focus groups, our third wave of research work and in all of the key parameters between Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia we’re measuring whether or not people are changing their perceptions about Atlantic City, and there has been a statistically significant movement across the board in Baltimore and New York, less so in Philadelphia. But in terms of moving visitation, we’re starting to collect benchmarks, in fact there are a couple different players in town that are going to start to publish those more specifically that will relate to the non-gaming activity in the marketplace. So when you measure things like cars coming in that are parking, spending measured by luxury tax, increased occupancy that we saw this summer in terms of setting a record new level of rooms that were occupied, I think we feel good that there are some very discreet and accurate statistical measures that show increase in economic activity. Having said that, as we look forward to the next year, we really want to move even more aggressively to maintain the brand messaging and growth, but really become a little more targeted in terms of helping with additional promotional elements like events that will physically draw people here. What was your favorite 2012 AC moment? Probably the [July 4] fireworks and the “Duality” launch on the Boardwalk. I just remember the feeling of being on the Boardwalk and the night and the crowd and the reaction. I might have said “ARTlantic,” but then again that was winter, and that was just a sneak peek. Next June when we really launch those two when they are really fully completed, and the next one is completed, and the Pinnacle site will be in full bloom, next year that might be the peak. But this year, that [July 4] experience was just so resonate of Atlantic City, it was all about the Boardwalk. n see more online @

throwdown while covered in dwarves. Bilbo also finds himself in a one-on-one battle with Gollum when he gets lost from the group. The problem with The Hobbit is that these characters are not nearly as interesting as Frodo, Sam, Aragon, Gimli and Legolas from the Ring movies. We just don’t learn as much about them. In addition, their adventures along the way to get to the “great adventure” Bilbo has been asked to join, aren’t compelling enough to make us forget that a battle with a super dragon is what we were expecting. Obviously, I’ve not read the books. As a filmgoer, I was expecting that battle and when it turned out to be three hours of skirmishes to get us to the next film, I was disappointed. The Hobbit presents a series of adventures that fail to engage us, because we don’t have the same emotional connection with the new characters that we had with the characters from the earlier movies. Even the beloved Gandalf feels a bit distant. And, while Bilbo Baggins is given opportunities to become a memorable character in the Middle-earth universe, he didn’t feel particularly memorable. He was bland. Three hours of set-up for the next chapter means, hopefully, that the battle with Smaug will be memorable. We just have to wait a year for the payoff that was missing in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. ■

s it crazy to call a three-hour movie kid-friendly? No, not when it is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Attending the movie with my brother’s family (including a teen, pre-teen and eight year old), the youngest, Will, was not happy when the adults agreed that The Hobbit was not nearly as engaging as the original trilogy. Will thought it was terrific, and the proof was that he was mostly quiet and attentive for those three hours. The Hobbit is less dark than the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, which is another element that makes it more enjoyable for the younger set. As the bah humbug grown-up, my biggest complaint about this latest adventure in Middle-earth is that it is three hours worth of set-up for the next movie, which is what made this grown up grumpy. Wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) visits his friend the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), and asks him if he is interested in having an adventure. Content in the Shire with a loaded pantry and a quiet, happy life, Bilbo turns down the offer. However, it turns out Gandalf is the Godfather of Middle-earth. His request is, apparently, “An offer you can’t refuse.” Bilbo is soon watching in dismay as 13 ravenous dwarves eat their way through all his food. Bilbo is asked to help these dwarves reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. While still reluctant, he eventually joins the dwarves and marches into danger wondering why he is doing this. Led by the warrior, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), the group is soon doing battle with the usual suspects, Goblins and Orcs (how do you tell them apart by the way?) and climbing a mountain that is actually giant rock people who decide to have a
