Dec. 25: ‘Chanukah on Ice’

8

The Black Keys

“El Camino’ (Nonesuch)

It’s not always a given that chanukah and christmas will coincide on the calendar, but this year christmas falls on the fifth day of the festival of lights. So surely a party is in order. chabad of Atlantic county will host a “chanukah on Ice” event starting at 3pm on christmas day at the Flyers Skate Zone. Open to the entire community, the event will include open ice skating, organized skating games for children and families, and a special guest appearance by the biblical heroes of chanukah, “The maccabees.” (The Hebrew rebels who re-consecrated the Jewish Temple in the chanukah miracle). There will also be skating to the sounds of chanukah music and the tastes of the holiday including potato latkes and jelly donuts, as well as the all important hot dogs and soft drinks. The highlight of the event will be the lighting of a giant menorah at center ice. “The program is intended to bring the spirit of chanukah to children and their families and instill in them a feeling of Jewish pride” says event coordinator, rabbi Avrohom rapoport. Admission is $7 per person and includes refreshments. Ice skates are available for a $3 rental fee, but participants can bring their own. To rSVP and for more information call chabad at 822-8500 or visit chabadac.com. — Mike Pritchard

The Akron, Ohio band the Black Keys are the White Stripes of today’s rock world. While Jack and Meg have been quiet since 2007, the Keys’ Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have been prolific, releasing four albums over the past five years, including the duo’s recent, and seventh, studio effort El Camino. Produced by Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), the 11-song set is super-charged romp down the expressway of time with short, punchy songs that echo the best of psychedelic rock, Motown, soul, and ZZ Top at its finest. With Burton’s eclectic touches — whether it’s hand claps, synths or fuzzed-out guitars — the Keys’ new songs make for a sweet, if rather short, ride. El Camino is a predictable follow-up to the band’s 2010 breakthrough Brothers, but that’s not a bad thing at all. — Jeff Schwachter Je

uld acquaintance of 2011 may best be forgot for many — and how better to clear the cache and ring in a fresh slate of calendar dates than by partying like there’s no tomorrow? First Night’s Meant Family Fun for 20 Years OK, plenty of adults cut loose on New Year’s Eve and leave the kiddies with the sitter, but if your motto is “A family that stays together, plays together,” then the annual First Night celebration is for you. The traditional Ocean City New Year’s Eve gala celebrates its 20th anniversary on Dec. 31. To mark the occasion its commemorative shirt will feature replicas of all 20 admission buttons designed over the years. The shirts are available for $20 at Downtown Gillian’s, 838B Asbury Ave. in O.C., and at many other locations. First Night offers over 70 varied entertainment programs at centralized locations from 4pm-midnight, Dec. 31, at which time it is capped by a fireworks display. CURTAIN CALL

Trop’s Tony Rodio Talks Boogie Nights By David J. Spatz

W

HEN VETERAN CASINO executive Tony Rodio returned to Atlantic City earlier this year, he hinted he was going to make some big moves as the new president and CEO of Tropicana Casino & Resort.

But grabbing a wildly popular attraction away from a competing property wasn’t initially on his radar. Yet that’s precisely what he did last week when he announced that Boogie Nights, the ’70s- and ’80s-themed club he initially installed at Resorts four years ago, would be moving to the Trop next spring. “I had a space for a club [at Tropicana], and there were a couple of other things that we were kicking around,” Rodio says. “But I didn’t think we’d be able to move Boogie Nights, because it was under contract.” But several months ago, that contract apparently ran out, and Boogie Nights — developed by club operator Dave Pena — was a free agent. Other properties were angling to get Boogie Nights, but Tropicana was “lucky enough to get them to move here,” Rodio says. When the Trop location opens, it will become Pena’s fourth Boogie Nights club, which appeals to a core demographic of people between 40 and 60, but has also proven popular with 20- and 30-somethings looking for a retro music and dance experience. In retrospect and hindsight, a reunion between Boogie Nights and Rodio was probably preordained by the disco music gods. The casino executive and the club date back to the very beginning of the brand. Not only did Rodio help create Boogie Nights at Resorts four years ago, but in 2010, when he was general manager of the Hollywood Casino in Indiana, Rodio brought Pena and his Boogie Nights club to the Midwest gaming hall. Pena opened an 8,000-square-foot, two-level club in Indiana, and just like at Resorts, the club was a winner from the moment the first disco song began pulsing through the sound system. The Boogie Nights that will be installed at Tropicana will be approximately 8,000-squarefeet, or about double the space at Resorts, which has retained the disco-era club and last week re-branded it Night Fever. The Tropicana club will bare little resemblance to the original Boogie Nights, which opened in a space that had been occupied for nearly 30 years by Resorts’ original steakhouse, known as Camelot. “I think when this club is done ... there’s going to be a wow factor,” Rodio says. “The club is going to be on a much higher level than it was down at Resorts.” By doubling the size of the room, thereby expanding the number of guests it can accommodate, increased revenues will allow the new Boogie Nights to reach out to artists from the era to make personal appearances in the club. The Trop is doing more than just grabbing a brand away from Resorts. Boogie Nights is Like us:

more than a name; it’s an attitude that’s carried out by the staff of the room, who are as much entertainers as they are bartenders, beverage servers and celebrity look-alikes like Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. The new club’s location — just off the skybridge linking the Tropicana casino floor with the self-park garage — will also be the catalyst for more change at the Trop designed to enhance non-gaming offerings. Carving the club out of existing casino space reverses a trend in Atlantic City. Properties used to take non-gaming space and turn them into part of the casino floor. Now, it’s vice versa, but Rodio says the casino won’t be reducing the number of slot machines and gaming tables by the introduction of Boogie Nights. “As the market has shrunk over the last number of years, most properties ... have reduced the number of gaming units and positions they have on the [casino] floor,” Rodio explains. “We’ve already done that at Tropicana. The Penny Pavilion will be closing, but our number of slot units isn’t going to decrease [because] we have a number of other spaces where we can re-add those games.” Outside of the club, the Trop plans to install a “party pit” with disco-themed table games and dealers and beverage servers wearing period costumes to create a ’70s- and ’80s-themed gaming experience. And across from the club, the casino lounge known as Tango’s will be expanded in anticipation of the big crowds Boogie Nights is expected to draw. Rodio is bullish on Atlantic City’s future and doesn’t agree with a recent study that suggested the resort would continue to struggle for another five years. He feels 2012 will be a turn-around year when the new Revel resort opens and existing properties continue to refine their operations to make Atlantic City a destination resort. “We sat on our hands for 30 years here in Atlantic City because we were the only game in the area [and] we got complacent,” he says. “We just offered slot machine and table games and we didn’t think about a diversified, all-encompassing entertainment experience. I think Atlantic City has a bright future. I think that with the opening of Revel, we’re going to see the market start to rebound. I think it’s incumbent on each and every one of us as operators to do things like [Boogie Nights] to breath excitement and fun back into our properties that goes beyond just the traditional gaming experience.” n

Poker Lowdown News on tournaments and other action in area casino poker rooms by Mike Pritchard

T

HINGS ARE ABOUT TO CHANGE on the Atlantic City poker scene as the Golden Nugget has quietly set Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, for the opening of its new poker room. We’re not sure if you can call it a soft opening, but we do know that the casino, which is in the middle of a $150 million renovation, has been trying to get the doors open on the room since last month. And it looks like they’re finally there. The room will open with 20 “luxury” tables, which is actually a few less than originally announced. In May, Nugget officials said they expected the room to have about 35 tables. The casino has released very little information on the room, so there’s no telling if an expansion is planned. Anyway, as of now, the room would offer “multiple daily tournaments with low buyins, exciting promotions and special events. Friendly, professional staff will also spread a wide variety of cash games such as No Limit, Pot Limit, Texas Hold ‘em, 7 Stud, Omaha and mixed games.” “We have been very eager to bring this new Poker Room to the Golden Nugget and we look forward to offering players all of the best games a full-service casino has to offer,” said Tom Pohlman, executive VP and GM of the casino, in a press release. While it will be interesting to see if the city’s poker market can handle a new room, there’s no question the Nugget brand is a nice addition to the city. “The Golden Nugget Las Vegas has a rich history in poker and has been home to top rated poker television such as NBC’s Poker After Dark and GSN’s High Stakes Poker,” says John Colville, Golden Nugget poker director. “Prestigious events like the Women in Poker Hall of Fame Banquet and numerous charity tournaments have also called the Golden Nugget home. I’m very excited about the opening of the Golden Nugget Atlantic City Poker Room and the opportunity to bring world-class events and high levels of customer service and luxury to this market, making this the ultimate player’s poker room.” In May, Nugget officials said they plan to cater to high-stakes cash games, which would challenge the neighboring Borgata for big-time play. But with only 20 tables and the casino offering tournament play, it’ll be interesting to see how that works out. Like us:

The casino has also announced its first major event in the room. The newly formed U.S. Ladies Poker Championship Circuit Tour will visit the Nugget’s new room in January. The tour, through the Ladies International Poker Series Tour, held its first event this month at the Choctaw Casino in Durant, Oklahoma. The Golden Nugget stop will be Jan. 7-8. The event includes a $300 + $40 main event on Saturday and a $150 + $25 satellite for September’s $550 buy-in, U.S. Ladies Poker Championship in Las Vegas. Both tournaments have bonus chip buy-ins of $10. One thing that will be interesting to see is whether the Golden Nugget can make any headway against the Borgata, which now controls about half of all poker play in the city. Speaking of the Borgata, on Wednesday, Dec. 14, the casino’s small bad-beat hit yet again, giving out $50,000 to players and keeping the biggest total bad-beat jackpot in the city from getting really high. The casino offers a small jackpot for hands minimum quad deuces to nines and a full payout for a minimum of quad 10s. As it is the total jackpot is closing in on $440,000. The $50,000 win went to Margaret Martin, of Staten Island, at a $1-$2 No Limit table as her quad deuces fell to quad kings. Martin won $20,000, while the holder of the kings, Mikhail Logatchev, of Mays Landing, won $10,000, and the pot. The remaining eight players at the table won $2,500 each. And in some more big jackpot news, the improbable six card super diamond flush jackpot at Harrah’s three card poker tables — a jackpot I couldn’t imagine ever hitting — has hit for the second time. That made a $1 million winner out of an unidentified woman who hit the jackpot Sunday, Dec. 18. The jackpot only hits for a million if the player can make a super diamond Royal Flush (to the nine) combining the player’s and dealer’s cards. It first hit in October for $1 million and also hit for $100,000 (a Royal Flush in hearts) in November. Players must make the special six-card bonus bet to be eligible, which offers payouts with odds paid for all hands trips or better. The jackpots for the super royals are fixed payouts. n

Harvest Market

Address: 1222 Rt. 9 South, Palermo Phone: 390-0028

Fred’s Tavern in Stone Harbor and Harvest Market in Palermo are pleasing additions to Cape May County’s culinary scene. By Frank Gabriel

ne of the most pleasant interludes we can imagine for your holiday time off is a slow, meandering sojourn down southern new Jersey’s peninsula toward Cape may. the county itself — at least south of ocean City — is rather a living anachronism, with a Victorian appeal reminiscent of the english country and seacoast. a pair of new entries to the Cape may County food scene worthy of your time are the harvest market of palermo and fred’s tavern in stone harbor. the latter, smack dab on main drag/bridge road, 96th street, has been established as one of that upscale barrier island community’s preferred watering holes and meeting places for many decades. this past summer the owners began providing full lunch and dinner service as well. In a comfy, pub-style dining space carved from what was once a storeroom — some of the costliest storage space to be found anywhere, given that town’s real estate values — fred’s offers a brief menu of classics, plus a trio of creative dinner additions friday and saturday nights. With these, the kitchen stretches to serve up fare comparable to the quality of many finer places in dining destination Cape may, except at price points about half of what you would expect to pay just a few miles further south. from fred’s regular bill of fare, an absolutely colossal wedge salad would have been enough to work as a dinner entrée for most diners. Bathed in a glorious, flo-

ral coat of chunky bleu cheese dressing, it serves to remind you of how good, simple food can still manage to be inspired. so did my nightly special — a warm, steaming bowl of butternut squash risotto pitch-perfect on the chilly fall evening we dined. smooth and porridge-y, the rice and veggie component had clearly been cooked simultaneously, not combined prior to plating. this resulted in a cool, auburn hue and strong, sweet, earthy essences. a quick glance online at some recent specials serves to illustrate my earlier comments. Items like bone-in, Cajunstyle rib eye, walnut crusted salmon and grilled swordfish with a lemon/wine

sauce are hardly what one expects from standard bar cuisine. a few miles north, in the sleepy little Upper township community of palermo, harvest market on Route 9 vends sandwiches, pizzas, grilled items, salads and extraordinary baked goods — specifically, bagels. Big, puffy rounds in about a half dozen varieties, including an absolutely out-of-this-world sunflower seed version that you are unlikely to encounter at many other places. But harvest market’s line of bakeryfresh goods isn’t limited to the savory. We’ve also sampled excellent cookies, scones, brownies and specialty pastries from the tidy, barn-shaped structure’s

ovens. the transition here began shortly after the facility was taken over by current owner, tara fickes. a year ago she brought in former local restaurateur Rei prabhakar as her on-site baker. previously half of a husband-and-wife team at splendid Karen and Rei’s — a fixture in avalon and later nearby swainton for more than a decade, closed in 2010 — the Culinary academy of america grad says, “one of the things she [fickes] wanted to do was install a bakery.” Walk into the market any day and you will immediately be greeted by the delectable, enticing scent of that artisanal craft. prabhakar, who explains that “I was drawn to food as a teen in france,” and that, “my heart beats as a chef,” is particularly fond of his angel cream donuts, apple fritters and chocolate meringue cookies. he also recommends the baguettes of sourdough, available only on weekends. We’ve been similarly taken in by his pizza, crisp and authentic. especially the “twisted Italian” with capicola, genoa and hard salamis adorned with roasted red peppers and prosciutto. six separate varieties of house-baked bread are available for purchase and sandwich consideration: soft Kaisers, whole grain Kaisers, country rye, honest white, soft torpedo rolls and crusty Italian. and if it is a sandwich ye seek, may we suggest the “prissy” — cranberry walnut chicken salad and brie on a Kaiser. Wishing you and yours a stellar season of holiday feasting! n

Ed McGinty and Erik Weiner’s ‘Boardwalk Empire State of Mind’

‘Boardwalk Empire’ duo dream up hysterical rap song and video based on the show set in A.C.

RIK WEINER IS A WRITER, LYRCIST, actor and a viral video star. The 34-yearold California resident, who famously had one line on the HBO series The Sopranos, which he turned into a 2008 viral rap-video sensation, “One Line on The Sopranos,” got the job as a cast member on Boardwalk Empire (his character was killed in season one, which came back to haunt his killer toward the end of season two) because of that video. Terry Winter, who created Boardwalk Empire, wrote that “one line” that Weiner had on The Sopranos and wanted him for the part of Agent Sebso on Boardwalk Empire. So, just before Weiner’s departure from the show in 2010, he wrote a hilarious rap song, “Boardwalk State of Mind,” which he gave out as CD gifts to Winter, and other cast and crew members on the show. Ed McGinty, an Atlantic City native who not only plays Ward Boss Boyd on the show, but is also a research adviser for the writing team, not only loved the song, but decided to work with Weiner to make a video for it, utilizing his film school, directing and screenwriting expertise. “Boardwalk Empire State of Mind” has already tickled the funny bones of more than 80,000 viewers on Internet video sites such as Funny or Die and YouTube, since its debut Wednesday night, Dec. 8. On a three-way call, a few days following the video’s release, McGinty and Weiner spoke with Atlantic City Weekly. Here are excerpts from the interview. (See full interview and entire video at acweekly.com)

and obviously people who watch the show will get a lot of the inside jokes in the lyrics. EM: Yeah, it was an interesting balance because I wanted to keep the, like you said, the essence of the show, the weight of the time period and that kind of thing, but still make it funny so it was tough. ... We had an original concept that didn’t quite work out. We wanted to do it as if it was a behind-thescenes video of the first rap video ever made [in the 1920s]. But we had trouble getting some of the props we needed for that.

Erik Weiner and Halle Morse in the new video

Who’s the flapper woman in the video? I believe she’s the only other person in the video aside from Erik. EW: That’s Halle Morse. She is a friend of my manager’s who suggested that she could do it, and we met her and she was amazing. Once she got into costume, we were like, “Oh my God! This is perfect!” She’s just an amazing singer and dancer and she added so much to the video; it’s amazing. EM: And this was like an 11th hour thing. We couldn’t figure out who we were going to get, and then we were talking about having three girls in the background and then it was like, let’s just get [one person]. So we got her in the 11th hour and she was so great. We literally just met her before [shooting her scenes], threw her in costume and then it was like, “Action!” And she slinked into the frame and it was so wonderful and it was like, this is just one of those things where it’s such a happy accident. She’s so captivating.

but my second reaction was, “I gotta write a song about my time on the show,” because that would be a nice bookend to the story of me coming on it and leaving it. So the natural one that occurred to me was “Boardwalk Empire State of Mind.” So I started writing it and wrote it and recorded a sort of very janky version of it that I just recorded in my closet at home and when I came back to shoot the final episode I gave CDs to the producers and Ed, who I had become friends with while working on the show by that point, and Michael Shannon and then a couple other people in the crew as a present to say goodbye. A lot of the lyrics were a lot more insular and shout outs to like Ed and Terry Winter and everyone. And everyone Erik, What was the impetus for writing the loved it, especially Ed, who told me: ‘I’m going to direct the music video.’ And it First, congrats on another amazing season. song “Boardwalk State of Mind”? The shooting of the video was done this Erik Weiner: Well, you know the story couldn’t have turned out better. Hat’s off Ed McGinty: It’s an honor to be a part past Labor Day? to Ed, I think he did an amazing job. about how I got on the show [Boardwalk of this incredible piece of work and it goes EM: [Yes] ... because that was a company even further for me because I grew up in Empire] ... so when Terry Winter told me Yeah, it looks amazing and really captures day off for the shooting [for the show] we Atlantic City and I feel as though there is [that my character Agent Sebso] was dying my initial reaction was, “Dang!” You know, the essence of the show in terms of the set, were able to slip onto the set and do it that a real blood element for me. How did you get involved with this video project? EM: Long story short, I was a roadie/ stage manager on big music tours and what not so I had access to a lot of bands and my father and grandfather were both sort of hobbyists with photography so I would photograph the bands and then I got a video camera and it was just a matter of access. ... And then I took some time off from the road and went away to film school, so I used some of that access to do some music videos for a few bands ... but I didn’t really have a director’s job on an actual music video until I met a band called The Distillers and they gave me a lot of work.

day. The beach stuff, we actually shot the next morning at 5am. I picked up Erik and we went over [to Rockaway Beach in New York] before work and it was pouring rain and when we left it was like dark. So we were like, “I don’t know if we’re going to get this, but we’re just going to go there and hope for like an act of God.” And when we got to the beach, the sky just opened up and there was literally a double rainbow — the first double rainbow I had ever seen before in my life — and that’s when we got that opening shot [in the video]. It was just this perfect balance, with the clouds there and the ocean; it was just perfect. We couldn’t have been happier. EW: People have asked Ed if we used CGI for that first shot, that’s how good it turned out. Erik, you wrote the song when you found out your character was going to be killed on the show? EW: It must have been May 2010 because that’s when I finished shooting and then between our schedules it took us some time to figure out when to shoot

the video and try to get sort of a blessing from everyone involved with the show, to sign off on it, and I had to re-write the song and re-record. Not in your closet I presume. EW: No, we went to a real studio in San Francisco; my brother actually has a studio out there, and we chopped up the sample and made the beat and then it just wound out good for both Ed and I to shoot Labor Day. Then we had it ready about a month ago [November 2011] and we just wanted to make sure that everybody was OK with us releasing it and once they did, and we got everyone’s blessing, it just so happened that the day that we were ready to release it was right after there was a “previouslyon” segment before the final episode [of season two] showing Agent Sebso being drowned again, to sort of remind viewers. Right, because it comes up again in the final episode. EW: Exactly. So it was like perfect timing, kind of serendipity ... and we were like, “Let’s post it right now” because the story line is in the air again. So, yeah, it

just kind of worked out exactly how we were hoping. Sunday, Dec. 11, was the season two finale, so that would have been like a few days after? EM [to EW]: When did you put it up? Like late Wednesday night or something like that? EW: Yeah, I think Wednesday night. EM: The response has just been incredible. There have been reviewers of the show that have seen it and they loved it and Terry Winter loves it and speaks about it, and [Boardwalk Empire executive producer] Tim Van Patten saw it and was literally laughing out loud the whole entire time so it’s just an incredible experience. I mean, we just did it for fun, and it was basically just going to be gift for the cast and crew and it’s just turned into something that’s just incredible. ED, you play Ward Boss Boyd on the show. What is your other role on the show? EM: I act as the research adviser for predominantly the research department, but I also assist each department as needed.

And that came out of just growing up in Atlantic City and my grandfather and father both worked at The Ritz. And I met Terry Winter while I was at film school at Columbia and a friend of mine had been keeping in touch with him and when this project came up, he recommended me, having the Atlantic City background, and film background, and we met and completely hit it off and I had two bags of research I had done before the meeting and when I finally pulled out a picture of my grandmother and grandfather standing on the Boardwalk in front of The Ritz in 1922, he just flipped over that and said, ‘You’re hired. I can’t even tell you the dream that I’m living right now because I feel that I have family roots and historic roots. Even the part I play, there was actually a ward boss named Boyd who was my grandfather’s fishing buddy, so there’s a real crazy element. Based on this season, with my character taking the wrong side, who knows what’s going to happen. A safe could fall out of the air, I could slip on a banana peel, all these ways that people die in the ‘20s. [Laughs] n

WHITNEY’S RADAR

Happy Celebrating! By Whitney Ullman

I

t’s that time of year when we are joyous about having days off, but at the same time dreading the almost forced family time. most of us would love to take a holiday vacation, get away from our daily routines and experience new sights and cultures, but during this time of year we are stuck in holiday-related traffic and stressing out about superficial things. Don’t lose sight of the fact that although it’s tough to get along with everyone, especially the odd family members that you just can’t relate to no matter what you do, that you are spending time together because deep down it is a “ritual of reassurance,” as the quote goes by Phillip andrew adams. (“to many people holidays are not voyages of discovery, but a ritual of reassurance.”) you are part of something whole, whether you like it or not. it’s always important to accept those who you don’t understand because we

can’t change others, we can only control our own thoughts and choices. enjoy your time with your family elders because that facet of the holidays gets overlooked too often. i can’t tell you how many times i hear my grandparents complain that they don’t ever hear from certain family members. and make an impact on the young ones because they are very impressionable. Give them wisdom and no matter what your financial situation, make them feel rich from love and respect. and, of course, work on yourself. it’s easy for me to tell you what you should do, and easy for you to see what’s wrong with others, but during this time of year it’s usually an eye opener. we reflect on all that we have accomplished, or didn’t accomplish and think about our goals for the next year. recently a friend told me, “i don’t believe in goals because you can either achieve them or fail.” he then preceded

with, “i believe in outcomes.” if you determine an outcome you will figure out a way to get there. i mentioned what he said to another group of friends and they looked at me like it was the dumbest thing they’ve heard — but for some reason i keep thinking about it. sometimes we just have to know the big picture and if we have that vision then we will figure out how to get there. Visualize your outcome for 2012 and then start on the journey to make it happen. ---for all of you last-minute holiday shoppers, i’ve been finding some really cool and unique gifts online, and although shipping them would get to you after the holidays, these sites and items are still pretty cool to check out. thinkgeek.com has some cool items such as cupcake mints, cookie misfortune — evil fortune cookies — and caffeinated chocolate milk straws. however, if you don’t want all of that sugar then check out another interesting item they have in stock, which is a unique modern approach to weight management — called the withings wifi scale. this is

a wireless blue tooth scale that will accurately weigh you and post it on your own private custom web page that tracks your body mass and shows your progress. Plus it can measure up to eight total family members on each scale, and auto recognize each one! for fun office gifts check out knockknock.biz. instead of the typical “while you were out” message pads, they have ones that read “while you were (check one) enjoying lunch, texting friends, pretending to be sick, getting coffee,” etc. Pretty funny. my favorite new find this year, for us girly girls, are car eyelashes by carlashes. com. Bottom line, whether you are giving or receiving, gifts are a lot of fun and no matter what your age it’s always exciting to unwrap something. especially a thoughtful present from someone who cares. the smallest gesture will go a long way. remember, it’s never too late to make someone’s day. have fun and be merry, but most important, be safe and alert. happy celebrating! n

Latest ‘Mission Impossible’ is action packed; so is the new ‘Sherlock Holmes’ film. By Lori Hoffman film template of cramming in as many jawdropping scenes as possible into the mix, making full use of modern technology. it’s as if Brad Bird, making his live action debut, is determined to treat his cast as if they are animated figures in a spectacular landscape where the rules of nature don’t apply. And, while that makes for a wild thrill ride, a tad more realism around the edges would have been nice. That said, the latest Mission impossible flick will keep your heart pumping.

some fans were not happy with Guy ritchie’s sherlock Holmes flick that transformed the title character from a brilliant man who used his brains to solve crimes to a full blown macho action hero who also happens to have an excellent cerebral side. Actually, i was one of those who complained that there was too much lock, stock and Two smoking barrels and not enough Victorian milieu in robert Downey’s Jr. first foray as the world’s most famous detective. With sherlock Holmes: A Game of shadows i’m drinking the Kool Aid, thanks in large part to the introduction of holmes’ ultra-nemesis, Professor James Moriarity (delightfully played by Jared harris) to the mix. With the ultimate villain making mischief, the usual spectacular ritchie action sequences have a stronger context. The direct holmes-Moriarity confrontations are splendid, in particular the chess match finale. Jude Law continues his excellent support as Watson and stephen Fry comes on board as holmes’ eccentric brother Mycroft. Unfortunately, the wonderful swedish actress Noomi rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) wasn’t given enough to do as a gypsy woman whose brother is part of Moriarity’s plot. That mild disappointment aside, Game of shadows makes better use of ritchie’s “sherlock holmes on steroids” concept. n

he Mission iMpossible series, based on the classic TV show from the 1960s-’70s, has been consistently excellent, full of cool spy ware, amazing action sequences and anchored by superstar Tom Cruise as ethan hunt. The previous Mission impossible film, Mi3 (2006) went for a major emotional payoff with ethan hunt and his wife in peril, but the latest entry is a total blast of pure adrenaline, beginning with a spectacular jail break out of a russian prison. Directed by the former animation specialist Brad Bird (The incredibles) and produced by Cruise and J.J. Abrams (who took over the helm of the franchise when he directed Mi3), Ghost protocol ratchets up the Cold War with a plot about an insane terrorist, hendricks, who plans to initiate a nuclear holocaust. The madman, played by Michael Nyqvist (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) begins his plan by blowing up the Kremlin and pinning it on hunt. Now hunt’s current iMF team (simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Jeremy renner) has really been disavowed, and their support system disbanded. They are on their on — with just enough incredible gadgets to engage in one spectacular action sequence after another. The scene that had earned the most buzz involves hunt forced to climb at the top of the world’s tallest building in Dubai with no ropes, only special climbing gloves that go on the fritz mid-climb. That scene is the big ticket moment in Ghost protocol, but my favorite was the oneon-one battle between hunt and hendricks in a car park that has them falling from car to car when they aren’t beating the crap out of each other. Ghost protocol follows the current action
