Atlantic Club By Jeff Schwachter
A
tlantic City is a resort town that seems to always be a-changin’ and 2014 ought to be no exception to that rule. The buzz during the last weeks of 2013 point to at least a few major shifts in the city’s dynamics with regard to the casinos. First, it was announced on Dec. 20 that after a year of failed deals and suitors from as far as cyberspace, the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel will be sold to a pair of companies with casinos in Atlantic City. Following the approval of the deal by a judge during a Monday, Dec. 23, bankruptcy hearing, Caesars Entertainment Corporation confirmed that its subsidiary, Caesars Entertainment Operating Company, Inc., which operates four casinos in Atlantic City (Bally’s, Caesars, Harrah’s and the Showboat), will acquire the non-gaming assets of the Atlantic Club, which will close its doors on Jan. 13, 2014. Tropicana Entertainment, meanwhile, will acquire the Atlantic Club’s gaming assets. The sale will reduce the number of casinos in the resort to 11, marking the first casino to close since the Sands in 2006. The two gaming companies will pay a combined $23.4 million for the business, with the Tropicana taking the slot machines and table games for $8.4 million, and Caesars getting the Boardwalk property and its 800-plus hotel rooms for $15 million, according to reports. A press release from Caesars issued on Dec. 20 states that Caesars expects to close on the purchase of the Atlantic Club following the closure of the property. It also states that: “Caesars does not intend to resume gaming or hotel operations at the facility, and is evaluating options for the use of the assets, some of which may be used in the company’s other Atlantic City properties.” In the days between the announcement on Dec. 20 and the court ruling on Dec. 23, reports surfaced that Atlantic City’s newest casino, Revel, was in negotiations with Hard Rock International to purchase the property. A story in the New York Post quoted unnamed sources saying that Hard Rock, which has expressed interest in adding an Atlantic City casino to its operations, “plans a makeover of the Revel to turn it into a prime destination.” A few weeks ago, Revel sent out a statement to the media saying the company was “exploring strategic partnerships.” The Hard Rock deal could be this anticipated partnership or potentially just one of them. Time will tell.

Fruitcake Toss Day By Lori Hoffman
J
oining the great traditions of pumpkin tossing and watermelon tossing, Resorts will join a nationwide tribute to that re-gifting superstar, the holiday fruitcake. As someone who likes fruitcake, I’ve never understood the national loathing for this once popular holiday treat but if you’re one of the haters, you will love what happens on Saturday, Jan. 4. In honor of National Fruitcake Toss Day (Jan. 3, 2014), head for the beach at Resorts’ LandShark Bar for a chance to win prizes while throwing fruitcakes from noon-3pm. Fruitcakes can be purchased at LandShark Bar & Grill ($1 for one or $3 for 5) and thrown at a target located on the beach. Some of the fruitcakes will reveal prizes such as T-shirts, overnight stay and one grand prize of a Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker will be given away. Additionally, teams can register to play in a cornhole tournament with the winning team taking home a new, LandShark cornhole game. Proceeds from the event will benefit Gilda’s Club South Jersey. Tournament teams can register online at resortsac.com/party/margaritaville or call 340-7647.
Freezin’ for a Reason: Local Polar Bear Plunges By Ray Schweibert
C
ross a crazy stunt off your bucket list, fulfill a resolution by contributing to a worthy cause, and cure a New Year’s Eve hangover all in one shot by taking an annual Polar Bear Plunge. One of the area’s longest-running plunges is in Brigantine, where the 14th annual event will benefit the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that provides housing, transportation and assistance to wounded military veterans and their families. “Fisher House stepped up big time to help military families during the government shutdown, and the Brigantine Polar Bears are again stepping up to help Fisher House,” says event co-founder John Hand. Over the past eight years, Hand and his dedicated group of volunteers turned a quirky tradition into a charitable cause. The Brigantine Polar Bears have raised over $180,000 for Fisher House, including $40,000 last year alone, which saw about 1,000 people take the plunge and roughly 9,000 spectators. This year’s goal is $50,000 and even more plungers/spectators are expected. This event is free and starts with pre-plunge festivities at 11am at the 14th Street South beach, in front of the Laguna Grill & Rum Bar, Wednesday, Jan. 1. The official plunge is at noon. Jim “The Singing Lifeguard” Craine is the master of ceremonies. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes, and prizes will be awarded for best costumes. There will be a bonfire on the beach and an after-party at the Laguna Grill with live music by the Mott’s Creek Pickers and a $10 buffet. For more call Linda (412-7020) or John (892-0365), or visit Fisher House.org or BrigantinePolarBears.com. Atlantic City’s annual Polar Bear Plunge will be at noon Jan. 1 in front of Resorts. Participants who go completely under water will receive an official Polar Bear certificate, and everyone is encouraged to donate to the event’s charity, the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America. Visit atlanticcitypolarbearclub.com or call Michael at 267-566-4649 for more info. Ocean City’s First Night Celebration on New Year’s Eve will be followed by a First Dip in the Ocean Jan. 1 at 2pm in front of the O.C. Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Call 525-9300 for more information. see more online @

working as a doorman at a popular nightclub. One night, Palminteri made what turned out to be the biggest mistake of his life — and the best, too. He refused to let Swifty Lazar, the now late but then legendary superagent to the stars, into a party at the club. Compounding the problem? It was Lazar’s party, and the agent had Palminteri fired on the spot. Between that and the fact that Palminteri couldn’t find the right parts to play on stage or on screen, the actor decided to take matters into his own fingers. Plus, he was hungry. Literally. He needed to find a way to put food on the table. “The impetus was desperation,” he says. “I had credits as an actor, but I ran out of money like any stage actor does. I couldn’t find the right parts for me, so I decided if they won’t give me a great part, I’d write one myself.” And he did. The result was A Bronx Tale. The stage version is a one-man play in which Palminteri plays all 19 characters, and just about each of those 19 is someone he knew as a kid and who in some way shaped his life. He admits it’s easy for him to play all 19 characters because he not only wrote their lines, but most are based on people he knew. But he still needs to pay attention and not get too complacent during the show, because sometimes three or four of his characters are carrying on a conversation. But he knows the characters well, because — in one way or another, good or bad — they were his heroes: his bus-driver dad, the cop on the corner, the local loan shark and the rackets guys who were foot soldiers in the local Mafia family. Palminteri admits his life could have gone in one of several directions, and not all of them were good. He credits his parent for helping to steer him down life’s better path. “My mom and dad really gave me a strong foundation and my father always said the saddest thing in life is wasted talent,” he says. “He said, ‘If you want to be something, don’t make stupid mistakes.’ And I guess I made the right choices.” Although Palminteri took A Bronx Tale to Broadway in 2007 and received great reviews, that was a one-and-done deal. He’s content to do the show in different cities, but the next time he hits the Great White Way, it will be in a completely different project. n

n a way, it isn’t a stretch to say that legendary film star Robert DeNiro and actor-playwright Chazz Palminteri were a symbiotic relationship waiting to happen before the two met backstage in an offBroadway theater in the early 1990s. DeNiro, of course, was already an abovethe-title Hollywood star. Palminteri, on the strength of his one-man stage play A Bronx Tale, had graduated from “who’s he?” status but whose name wasn’t exactly on the tip of everyone’s tongues. DeNiro wasn’t the first to recognize the box office and career potential of Palminteri’s play, which had already received rave reviews and got a real buzz going when he premiered it in Los Angeles in 1989. DeNiro not only wanted to turn the stage show into a movie, but he wanted it to be his film directing debut. Palminteri, who had already turned down $1 million to sell the movie rights to his play, had similar ideas. He wanted to write the screenplay for any movie version of his show. But Palminteri, who at the time was known mostly for his stage work, also wanted to jump-start his screen acting career. All that needed to happen after that is for the two men to reach a deal — which they did quickly. In 1993, the film version of A Bronx Tale, directed by and starring DeNiro playing opposite Palmenteri, made its debut. Today, a quarter-century after he wrote A Bronx Tale — a mostly autobiographical account of Palminteri’s life growing up in a Bronx brownstone, where he hung out with local Mafia soldiers and even witnessed a mob hit at 11 — Palminteri is known more from his work in TV and film than he is on the live stage. Still, he finds time to occasionally go out and perform A Bronx Tale, which he’ll do Saturday night, Dec. 28, at Trump Taj Mahal. “I love doing the show because it’s a part of me. This is what Robert DeNiro saw, this is how I became a star,” the 61-year-old actor says during a recent phone call from the set of ABC-TV’s sitcom Modern Family, on which Palminteri has a recurring role. Palminteri, who loved to entertain the wise guys on the corner with his impressions of them when he was a kid, was a struggling stage actor in Los Angeles in the 1980s. He couldn’t seem to find the right roles. Between stage roles, he supplemented his income with a variety of jobs, one of them

Colorful Congregation at Bader Field
‘Life In Color’ is bringing back to Bader Field some of the biggest names in electronic dance music, while blasting fans with a psychedelic blend of nontoxic neon paint. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
A
nightlife trend sweeping the nation made its A.C. debut inside a heated tent that housed about 10,000 frenzied fans last New Year’s Eve at Bader Field. The tent was among the largest found anywhere in the nation. So monumentally successful was Life In Color — an electronic dance music (EDM) extravaganza that combines multiple entertainment components, the most off-the-wall of which is showering show-goers with several shades of nontoxic paint — that event producer LineRocket Entertainment opted to turn it into an annual event at the resort. The Atlantic City Life In Color marks the final stop of around 50 gigs called the LIC Rebirth Tour, which never visits the same town more than once per year. Round Two of Life In Color in A.C. is Dec. 28 — tactfully scheduled on Saturday night so as to not siphon off of A.C.’s slate of NYE parties on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Modified and expanded, according to show producers, Life In Color again features many of the highest-
profile names in EDM along with laser lights, aerial acts, contortionists, fire shows, stilt walkers and, of course, blasting fans advised only to wear white with multiple colors. Christina Rodriguez is a lifelong Atlantic City resident and recent Rowan University graduate who attended the inaugural Life In Color party last year with several friends. “Life In Color was unbelievable,” says Rodriguez. “I had so much fun with my friends. It was the best New Year’s party I ever attended. The paint, the music, the people — it was just a blast, an unforgettable moment. I’m sure this year will be amazing since Krewella will be performing.” EDM sensation Krewella is a trio formed in Chicago and comprised of songwriting/ vocalist sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf, and Kris “Rain Man” Trindl. The band blends self-produced electro, house and dubstep with several other EDM influences. Krewella is currently on an international tour as a follow-up to its debut album Get Wet, which charted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 200 in its first
week. The group recently teamed up with charity organization Dance For Paralysis to help raise money and awareness for those living with paralysis, and to give paralyzed teens premium show seating and the chance to meet the trio backstage after shows. Also scheduled in A.C. is Sebastian Ingrosso, formerly of the internationally acclaimed DJ trio Swedish House Mafia that performed at many of the world’s largest music festivals. Ingrosso is also a renowned music producer who penned number-one hits rated by Beatport (the foremost authority on the EDM genre) including “Reload,” “Calling (Lose My Mind),” and songs made into hits by other artists including Kylie Minogue, Usher, and Britney Spears. Dutch breakout EDM artist Dyro will also be part of the Life In Color festivities Dec. 28, as will TJR (real name TJ Rozdilsky, who twice topped the Beatport charts with his songs “Funky Vodka” in 2012 and “What’s Up Suckaz” this year) and others. Sebastian Solanco, who co-created Life In

EVENT INFO Color with college friends Paul Campbell, Lukasz and Patryk Tracz in 2006, opted to make Atlantic City the final destination on the LIC Tour due in large part to A.C.’s growing reputation as an EDM hot-spot. “There are a couple reasons, but the main one is because it’s where we have the most fans,” Solano told AC Weekly after the inaugural LIC event at Bader Field. “The Northeast, the tri-state, even the D.C. area — the people are awesome. “We always wanted to do a New Year’s Eve [event] and for our first one we said, ‘Let’s do it for our biggest fans who deserve it.’ We had to find a neutral spot and thought it would be perfect [in A.C.] because there are the casinos, the clubs, the restaurants — it’s a cool place to go. Fans can come and make a weekend out of it.” The Chelsea hotel in Atlantic City (111 S Chelsea Ave. in A.C.; thechelsea-ac.com) has a special Life in Color hotel package with rates starting at $99 for Friday, $169 for Saturday and $99 for Sunday. Go to linerocket.com and click “ticketing,” then click The Chelsea hotel link on the left side of the window. Or you can call 800-548-3030 to book rooms. ■ see more online @

Still Got Them Boots? By Jerry Blavat • feedback@acweekly.com
O
nce again, greetings and salutations. And, of course, the jolly fellow is now on his way back to enjoy the New Year with Mrs. Santa. As usual, he made lots of folks happy, but more important was the good will, good cheer, and sparkle dust that he sprinkled for all of us. Now as we head into the New Year, let’s look forward to good things and happiness for family and friends. And talking about that, don’t forget our gala New Year’s Eve bash at Valley Forge Casino Resort with special guests the Soul Survivors, a lavish buffet, open bar, and the works, all for $125 complete. For more info and tickets call 610-354-8118 and mention the code jblavat1231 to be seated in the Geator’s group. Then it’s our appearance as Grand Marshall of the Murray Fancy Division for the New Year’s Day Mummer’s Parade seen on Channel 17 starting at 10am. Also for the new year, don’t forget our salute to the sounds of the ’60s at the Kimmel Center on Jan. 25 featuring the great voices of Bobby Rydell, Jay Black, Jay Siegel’s Tokens with former Jay & the Americans lead Jay Traynor, Pat Upton of the Spiral Starecase, Eddie Holman, and Gary U.S. Bonds. Contact the Kimmel Center at 215-893-1999 or kimmelcenter.org. And now, let’s ask the Geator.
cesses they really haven’t paid their dues, and their music reflects that. My friend and I are trying to figure out who sings lead on “Stoned Love.” If it’s not Diana Ross, then who? — Paula, Ocean City That voice belongs to Jean Terrell, who joined the Supremes in 1970 when Diana decided to pursue a solo career. Jeannie’s brother was a boxing champion from Philadelphia, Ernie Terrell, and she and Ernie were in a group together for a while called Ernie and the Heavyweights.
Just wondering what you think of music nowadays. — Heidi (via e-mail)
I wonder, do you still have the desert boots you danced in at Chez Vous? — Kathleen, Wyndmoor, Pa.
Heidi, I’m not really too impressed with much of the music from today. Music has to have a storyline that people can identify with or emotions you can relate to, plus a dance or rhythm that makes you feel good. Too much of today’s lyrics are derogatory to women or blame society for everything. Also, many of the current artists are created by music videos and marketing to cater to the trend of the day. I don’t think these artists will have longevity. Most did not start out in the wings, and unfortunately when they become overnight suc-
Strange that you ask because after watching some episodes of Mad Men I realized that they were dressing like we did on The Discophonic Scene. And I still do have my desert boots, my V-neck sweater, and the Highboy button-down shirt on which I would keep the two top buttons open for the show. I even have my chino pants, so I figure if I do a Discophonic Scene reunion, I’ll come out dancing with the entire wardrobe. Only I may have to get the pants taken in because now I’m a size 28 instead of a 30. n

EVENT INFO When Miller returns to Atlantic City, keep your eyes peeled for him since he likes to poke around the Boardwalk. “I love to look around,” Miller says. “Atlantic City is an interesting town. I want to see some more, since last time I was there it snowed. My tradition is eating at Johnny Rockets. We’ll see if I can add to that and start a new tradition there as well. I love Atlantic City. It’s a cool town. I’ve gotten so much support there. I’m going to keep going back to Atlantic City.” Perhaps some of Miller’s posse will be made up of his childhood friends, who

hen Mac Miller plays the Northeastern corridor, he usually misses New York and Philadelphia, but plays Atlantic City. “It’s the way it is for whatever reason,” Miller tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from Los Angeles. “I think this will be the fourth time in a row when I’ve come East that I’ve played the House of Blues in Atlantic City. I don’t know what it is. I guess the craps tables have been really nice to me.” Miller, 23, is joking. He doesn’t gamble much except in the studio, where some of his risks have paid off. Watching Movies With the Sound Off proves the artist also known as Malcolm McCormick has taken a step or two from his solid debut, 2011’s Blue Slide Park, which put him on the hip-hop map. Miller’s latest album is light, fun and offbeat. He comes with rhymes that range from righteous to raunchy. Miller’s wit is unrelenting, which will beg for comparisons with Eminem. “Any comparisons with him is an honor,” Miller says. “I just try to do the best that I can and paint a really vivid picture.” A number of cuts, “S.D.S,” “Birdcall” and “I’m Not Real” pack hooks as well. Impressive work for a young rapper. “I’ve worked at this for years,” Miller says. “I think all the work that I’ve put in has paid off for me. But I still have plenty of other work to do.”

often make the scene with the rising rapper. “There’s nothing wrong with staying connected with those who were with you before you ever had a taste of this [success],” Miller says. “The thing is that I haven’t changed. I think the worst thing you can do is change
“Atlantic City is an interesting town. I want to see some more, since last time I was there it snowed. My tradition is eating at Johnny Rockets. for the wrong reasons. I’m still true to the people who have had my back since I was growing up. I still love being around my old friends. “You stay loyal; I feel that way about everything. The people I don’t get are the ones that grew up in a city like Pittsburgh. They move to Los Angeles and. all of a sudden, they’re all into the Dodgers. They wear Dodgers jerseys and they forget about the Pirates. That’s just not me. Stay true and good things will happen.” When Miller walks the boards in Atlantic City, he’ll be difficult to distinguish from any of the other skate punks taking it all in. A variety of tattoos, a ballcap and, perhaps, a hoodie will shroud him in anonymity.
Miller has a great sense of humor, which stands out in the self-important world of hip-hop. “I’m a goofball and I’m proud of that,” Miller says. “There are too many guys that take themselves way too seriously in hip-hop. I have no problem making fun of myself. It’s weird that I’m out here in Los Angeles. That’s a joke in itself.” Living in L.A. is painful for the Pittsburgh native, who misses his hometown.
“I don’t give two craps about L.A.,” Miller says. “It’s all Pittsburgh for me. Give me the Steelers, the Penguins and the Pirates. I’m coming back to Pittsburgh for Christmas. I’ll hook up with [NL MVP] Andrew McCutcheon, who has helped the Pirates return to prominence. I’ll see him around Christmas time. We interviewed each other for a magazine and have become friends. I’m looking forward to flying East.”
“I’m not looking to be recognized,” Miller says. “Like anybody else, I just want to go about my business and have my kind of fun.” The best kind of fun Miller knows how to have is on the stage. Miller brings it with unbridled energy, palpable passion and plenty of charisma. “Performing is a good time,” Miller says. “That’s the way it’s always been for me. I don’t expect that to change and I don’t expect to change.” ■ see more online @

New Restaurants of 2013 The Atlantic City region welcomed an impressive slate of new dining options in the year following Sandy. By Frank Gabriel

ith gaming revenue eroding, Atlantic City’s regional economy continues to migrate towards restaurants, further cementing a reputation as one of the East Coast’s finest dining destinations. A year devoted to recovery — both economic and from 2012’s Superstorm Sandy — saw a remarkable number of commendable new food businesses locally. Let’s commence with a pair of Ventnor eateries. Stella, new by husband and wife team Nick and Stephanie LoBianco, opened on Ventnor Avenue, offering trattoria-style Italian cuisine. We’ve yet to sup in the suave-looking monochromatic BYOB, but like the sound of their signature soup: roasted tomato-fennel with pesto drizzle, an app of bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with almonds and goat cheese plus entrees like lemon sole and crab. Megu Sushi was a similar springtime debut. We’ve visited the Atlantic Avenue restaurant on a couple of occasions, relishing their excellent sizzling hamachi collar, tuna pizza and a couple of house specialty rolls, notably the Black Dragon, shrimp tempura and lobster topped by eel. Margaritaville. Fun and wonderfully frivolous, this food and retail complex from the undisputed king of Caribbean lifestyle fits perfectly fronting the boards at Resorts. Portions were plentiful, especially the largest platter of nachos known to man, and pleasantly authentic, like the trademark-protected Jimmy’s Jammin’ Jambalaya. A terrific addition to Resorts which should generate foot traffic for that end of town as well. Roberta’s, the initial restaurant from precocious wunderkind Joseph Muldoon, formerly of Bally’s The Reserve, opened in the spring at
The Iron Room
the Center Point Plaza, at Route 9 and Tilton Road in Northfield. Tucked in a landlocked spot within the shopping center, Muldoon nonetheless managed to be cooking for packed rooms by midsummer. We’ve dined thrice, one lunch and a pair of dinner visits, always wowed by Muldoon’s flawless technique and modern dining sensibilities. Items like Arcadian harvest salad — with guava vinaigrette and enoki mushrooms — cilantro grilled swordfish smeared by chipotle molasses BBQ sauce and misoyake glazed Scottish salmon with soy butter also reflect his fascinating personal ethnology. It has all the makings of a Jersey shore classic. The year’s biggest splash, however, was generated via Tropicana’s grand opening event, celebrating six new food outlets in summer. Led by a gargantuan, multi-level oceanfronting Chickie’s and Pete’s, this restaurant revisit also witnessed the addition of the
very cool-looking Broadway Burger, replacing tired former inhabitant Red Square. (Look for a feature on BB in this column early 2014.) Dotted throughout the landscape of the property are the subterranean and simply wonderful Casa Taco and Tequila, Tony Luke’s, Perry’s Pizza and Marketplace Express. The year’s most unique concept belongs to Borgata’s weekend-only edition of acclaimed NYC chef — and Water Club food guru — Geoffrey Zakarian’s Lamb’s Club pop up restaurant. Taking over space that is 28 West, the Friday to Sunday run brought a truly memorable salad of heirloom tomato, lobster and peach — Zakarian confiding that peaches, flown from California, cost six dollars each — plus entrees like spectacular lamb ribeye and Chatham salt cod risotto.

Think the family-owned and operated restaurant phenomenon is deceased? Look no further than a pair of diverse ventures debuting on the mainland this year — Mambo Café in Pleasantville and Corey’s Seafood in Oceanville, Galloway Township — to be proven wrong. Mambo, from Colombian-born natives Jose Marin and wife Martha, takes the prize for the year’s most inventive, colorful design, along with an intrepid menu fused from a plethora of pan-Latino sources. Corey’s, also from a couple, Corey and Nancy Kurica, represents a return to ownership after losing a cherished family restaurant, LBI’s Bayberry Inn, during last autumn’s tempest. Kurica’s expertise, seafood, is readily on display in the snug, nautical-themed dining room he literally built himself Shuckers. Johnny and Joanne Liscio’s remaking of longtime Fedeli’s Italian restaurant allowed them to complete a three-property monopoly between Jefferson and Adams avenues in Margate. Defined as a traditional Jersey shore raw bar and seafood house, it’s the middle of the Liscio’s three siblings, sandwiched between sit-down Johnny’s and stand-up John’s Steaks. With rugged exteriors and a spacious, open seating plan Shuckers appears to nicely fill a niche for casual seafood Downbeach. What remains to be said about The Iron Room, A.C.’s modern speakeasy of a restaurant located in the back room of the Atlantic City Bottle Company on Albany Avenue? Worldly, sophisticated and whimsical, chef Kevin Cronin’s itinerant selections reflect both seasonality and his prior body of work in Central America and New York City. Quirky, but ambitious, the menu is designed thoroughly in concert with ACBC’s world-class selection of distilled spirits. Two items promised permanence on the bill of fare are beef tartare and the house flatiron burger; grass-fed beef, thick bacon and either gruyere or cheddar on a pretty Brioche, one of the best beef patties this writer has ever encountered. With all due apologies to another Frank from New Jersey — it was a very good year. n

A messy look at schemers and dreamers and the big con By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
A
merican Hustle has earned a ton of praise and awards and looks like a sure bet to become a multiple Academy Award nominee. Despite that praise and the fact that I have been a major fan of director David O. Russell, in particular Silver Linings Playbook and Three Kings, American Hustle left me cold. While sitting back and enjoying these very skilled actors — Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence — playing colorful schemers with a desire to grab the brass ring and running around like lunatics, the story itself wasn’t all that engaging. A fictionalized account of the Abscam scandal of the late 1970s that sucked in a handful of politicians, including the mayor of Camden, a U.S senator and some congressmen, the real star of the show is the period music and clothing and the most bizarre comb over hairstyle in movie history. When you have Christian Bale in the lead role and you walk out of the theater obsessed with his hairstyle, that’s not good. While Atlantic City was a very minor player in the real Abscam FBI sting operation, it is the heart of desire for the characters in American Hustle. Bale stars as Irving Rosenfeld, a conman who specializes in taking money from desperate people who think their $5,000 fee to Rosenfeld will buy them a $50,000 bank loan. He just pockets the money. Rosenfeld also dabbles in selling forged artwork. When he meets Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), he finds a soul mate who adds a touch of class to his low rent scheme reinventing herself as Lady Edith, a British woman with “banking connections” overseas. Unfortunately for them, the FBI catches them in the act, represented by the wacky agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), wound as tightly as the curls on his head. To avoid jail, Irving and Sydney agree to
help DiMaso in an FBI sting to nab corrupt politicians. The play for the sting is that an Arab sheik is looking to invest in an Atlantic City casino and wants to pay a few influential politicians to grease the wheels. The first fly to get stuck in their trap is Camden Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner). This leads to more politicians and a scheme that balloons out of control and becomes a chance to catch the major mobster who controls Resorts International. The only thing that isn’t fiction in this new slant on the sting is the name of Atlantic City’s first casino. Jennifer Lawrence also shows up as Rosenfeld’s nutty wife whose big mouth creates some problems for the operation. Russell, who took the original screenplay by Eric Singer and gave it a fictional spin, was left with a story that spins out of control and lacks a comedic focus. It is all over the place, and the sense of improvisation that permeates the film feels like bad jazz riffs that wind up going nowhere. While Bale is excellent hiding behind that hair and beer belly, Amy Adam turns in the best performance. She feels like a real person surrounded by cartoon characters. You feel for her Sydney as someone who sees through all the bullshit and figures she has to stay and hope she is left standing when the crap is done hitting the fan. This concludes my minority view on a film that has earned rave reviews elsewhere. n
While Atlantic City was a very minor player in the real Abscam FBI sting operation, it is the heart of desire for the characters in American Hustle.

2013: Year in Review
Miss America returns, the Borgata celebrates 10 years, Margaritaville opens and the Atlantic Club announces it will close. Plus, a whole lot more.
T
he year 2013 will go down in the history books as a mixed bag for Atlantic City. While inventive minds collaborated to make several new and interesting non-gaming attractions a reality, the gaming side of the resort town suffered due to increasing competition from new and nearby markets. There was a lot to cheer about, however, in Atlantic City, including the return of the Miss America Pageant following an eight-year absence, as well as the return of several festivals, which, in recent years, have helped make Miss America Returns — Nina Davuluri (Miss New York) was crowned Sunday, Sept. 15, at Boardwalk Hall as the Miss America Pageant returned to Atlantic City for the first time in eight years.
at Golden Nugget; Beyonce July 26 at Boardwalk Hall; Toby Keith Sept. 22 at Revel; Phish Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Boardwalk Hall and John Fogerty Nov. 2 at Borgata — to name a few. Revel’s Change of Plans — Revel, which opened in April 2012, retooled its game plan over the summer, stepping up efforts to bring in more gamblers and hiring consultant Bernie Dillon to better utilize The Social and Ovation Hall entertainment venues.
Margaritaville — Opened Friday, May 24, at Resorts, to much fanfare, later featuring a free concert by Jimmy Buffett June 15. New Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian — Won Nov. 5 election. He will become A.C.’s first Republican mayor since 1990 when sworn in Jan. 1, 2014.

earth. That’s the best part of my job, being a positive role model. What has been your favorite place to visit? Being in Greece was cool. There is so much history there. Italy was also one of my favorite countries. I played there professionally in 2010 and it was cool to be back. Those two are my favorite so far. Professional basketball overseas is huge. I went to Afghanistan last year with the military tour and I’m looking forward to all the other future places I will get to visit. What team do the Globetrotters play? We play the World All-Stars and they give us a great challenge.
Sweet J Ekworomadu is one of three women who hit the hardwood as a Harlem Globetrotter. She comes to Boardwalk Hall Dec. 29. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

Sweet J is looking forward to playing at Boardwalk Hall. A rookie with the Globetrotters, the 5-10 sharpshooter out of Texas State University has played professionally in Italy and Poland and has been a member of the Nigerian national team since 2007. How did you get on the team? A tryout? Everyone has a different story. I knew someone on the team that went to my college [Texas State University]. He told them about me and I went and tried out and they liked what they saw. I’m the 12th female player in the history of the Globetrotters. It’s cool to be part of this history. I’m a rookie this year so the other female players [TNT Maddox and T-Time Brawner] showed me the ropes, and all the other guys have given me
advice, tricks and tidbits about being a Globetrotter. Is there a friendly rivalry between you three? No. There is no rivalry; it’s more like a sisterhood. We look out for each other. It’s one big family. Maybe there’s a rivalry between the guys and myself during a shootout. We all have one mission, to put smiles on peoples’ faces. What has been your favorite part about being a Globetrotter? My favorite part has been is the impression I’m making on children all over the place. I just got back from a military tour in Europe. You walk through the doors and their eyes light up and they [the children] think you are the coolest people on

Tell us about the “Fans Rule” World Tour. We have a trick shot challenge, the hot hand jersey [extra points awarded for the person wearing the jersey making a shot] and the four-point shot, which can happen anytime in the game. During the fourth quarter, fans are going to be able to vote live for the rule they enjoyed most, so they can see it in the fourth quarter. We want the fans to be involved in the entertainment. So, have you made a four-point shot? It’s pretty far and I’ve made a couple behind closed doors. There was a day in practice when I make four in a row. I want to do that in a game. ■ see more online @

he Harlem Globetrotters have been international ambassadors and hardwood heroes with their magical, funny antics for 88 years, a history that includes playing teams organized by Margate’s Red Klotz, the Washington Generals, New Jersey Reds and the Atlantic City Seagulls. However, but it wasn’t until 1985 that Lynette Woodard broke the Globetrotter gender barrier by becoming the first woman to suit up with the team. In the years since a total of 12 women have donned the uniform, including the current team, which sports a trio of female players, TNT Maddox, T-Time Brawner and Sweet J (Joyce) Ekworomadu. The Globetrotters 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour comes to Boardwalk Hall this Sunday, Dec. 28.
What do you practice more, straight basketball or the tricks? To be a Globetrotter you have to be an awesome basketball player. We have to practice a little bit of everything, including the entertainment side of it. I would say it is about equal.
