here is nothing like a leap into the frigid Atlantic Ocean after a night of partying, or perhaps a brisk run to get you off to a fresh start in the New Year. Both of these activities are part of Ocean City’s First Day at the Beach celebration, Jan 1, 2013. And, if you’re dubious about running into the Atlantic, it is warmer than usual this year because of a mild fall, around 48 degrees, rather than the usual mid-30s. A 5K Boardwalk run/ walk begins 12:30pm (giving you time to sleep in a bit) at the Music Pier. Registration starts at 11am. Entry fee is $20 (with shirt while they last). Without shirt, fee is $10. Pre-registration fee is $18 if received before Dec. 28. For more info, contact Mike Givens at 861-0674 or at runawayac@comcast.net. Awards will be presented for the 5K Race, male and female 1st. 2nd, 3rd and Overall. The age groups include 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 and over. The walk is non-competitive. The “First Dip in the Ocean” is set for 2pm. All participants should report to the registration area in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, where they will sign a waiver and receive a “Beach Nut Certificate” proclaiming that they have bravely negotiated the waters on New Year’s Day in Ocean City. Visitors will also be able to make an optional donation to support OCNJCARE, the volunteer organization that is assisting those still recovering from the recent Sandy storm.

Sublime soul, straight-ahead rockers and a pair of tracks produced by indie troubadour Beck barely scrape the surface when describing Dwight Yoakam’s first album of new tunes since 2005’s remarkable Blame the Vain.. The 12-song set, 3 Pears, released in September, is undoubtedly one of the singer-songwriter’s greatest collections of new material during his wildly prolific career. The two tracks co-produced by Beck (“A Heart Like Mine” and “Missing Heart”) are groovy standouts and although the album is modern in every sense, 3 Pears has a 1960s-era vibe rollin’ throughout, as well as some good ol’ honky tonkin’ twang. One of the best albums of 2012, 3 Pears will surprise you, haunt you and get you dancing too. (Yoakam plays the Golden Nugget in A.C. Jan. 26, 2013.) — Jeff Schwachter

he Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Murphy Writing Seminars have teamed up to bring wordsmiths a chance to hone their craft at the 20th Annual Poetry and Prose Getaway. The three-day conference will take place over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, (Jan. 18-21, 2013) at the Stockton Seaview Hotel in Galloway. The Winter Getaway, which is geared toward educators, encourages teachers to attend to improve their own writing to in turn provide better instruction to students. “Teachers who write become better teachers of writing,” says Peter Murphy, conference director and veteran writing teacher, having spent 29 years teaching at Atlantic City High School. Those whose schools are part of Stockton’s Educational Technology Training Center (ETTC) may use their ETTC credits to attend the Getaway. The conference will host some of the most prestigious authors from the area, including Stockton’s Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Creative Writing, Stephen Dunn, and Pulitzer Prize in Poetry winner Dorianne Laux, who will assist attendees in a number of workshops including poetry, nonfiction, and memoir. With classes of 10 or less, attendees will receive intensive and specific instruction and feedback, receiving constructive insights from both instructors and peers. Teachers will earn 18 hours of professional development credit, and engage in Common Core Standards as they practice different styles of writing for different audiences. Julianne Paper was fairly unfamiliar with creative writing prior to attending the Getaway, but left feeling emboldened. “I like the atmosphere which engendered positive feedback and I am now inspired to write more,” she says. Non-educators are also permitted to attend, with registration available at wintergetaway.com.

esperate times often call for desperate measures, even in the music business. Especially in the music business. That’s where the members of Grand Funk Railroad found themselves in 1972. Two years earlier, they had sold more albums in one year than any other American band. Their popularity was so huge that in 1971, they broke The Beatles’ attendance record at Shea Stadium in New York by selling out the 70,000seat ballpark in just 72 hours. But behind the scenes, GFR was on the verge of jumping the tracks. They were being sued for breach of contract by their former manager, Terry Knight, whom the band had fired because of mismanagement. And, in spite of their huge fan base, albums flying off the shelves and sold-out concerts, the music critics were savaging their live shows and recordings. GFR needed to make a major musical statement, and they needed to do it fast. “We were really just looking for hit material,” says GFR founding member and drummer Don Brewer. “We were going through a big lawsuit with our former manager who had kind of ripped us off of everything. And we were also going through a major change in radio from FM underground to being more of a hit-oriented format. We really had to get with the times if we were going to stay alive. It was sink or swim time.” Touring behind their 1972 album Phoenix, Brewer found himself thinking about the band’s job as they toured from one city to the next. “I was just looking at what we were doing, and I kind of felt like we’re coming to your town, we’ll help you party down, because that was our job,” Brewer says during a recent chat from his home in Florida. “And so I had this line in my head, and pretty soon I sat down with my little guitar and I was screwing around with two-finger chords and stuff and I came up with some chord changes.” A new song was percolating, and Brewer, 64, didn’t have to look very far lyrical for inspiration. Life on the road offered plenty of opportunities — wink, wink, wink. “I wrote the lyrics about things that were happening on the road,” he remembers. “There was sweet Connie in Little Rock and the four chiquitas in Omaha [and] playing cards with [bluesman] Freddie King all night.” The only thing missing was a tag line for the song, which presented itself a few weeks later. “That’s when it dawned on me that the perfect answer to everything is that we’re an American band, and that’s when it all came together,” Brewer says of the song that eventually became known as “We’re An American

Grand Funk Railroad

“I knew the song was going to be a major hit.” Band,” which became GFR’s signature and remains an iconic tune that’s still in regular rotation on practically every greatest-hits radio station in the country. Brewer, who’ll lead Grand Funk Railroad into Resorts Casino Hotel for shows Dec. 30 and on New Year’s Eve, knew the song had hit potential. But he had no idea that it was going to have four decades of staying power. “I knew the song was going to be a major hit the first time I heard it on the radio,” he remembers. “I had to pull my car over and off the road because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, because on the radio it sounded so great, it just had the sound of a hit record. I think it still does today. When I hear that opening drum lick and the cow bell and the way the song comes on, it just takes control.” Grand Funk Railroad already had several hit singles, including “I’m Your Captain/Closer To Home,” when it released “We’re An American Band” in 1973. The song shot to the top of the charts and would be the first of two number one singles the band would release that year, along with their cover of “The Loco-Motion.” Forty years after their biggest hit, Brewer and founding member and bass player Mel Schacher perform about 40 shows a year. The band’s third founder, Mark Farner, last performed with GFR during a period in the late 1990s. Yet the band, who used legend-in-waiting Todd Rundgren as one of their record producers in the 1970s, still captures the original GFR sound with its collection of all-star musicians. Keyboard, guitarist and songwriter Max Carl, a former member of .38 Special is part of the current GFR lineup. So is Bruce Kulick, who spent 12 years playing lead guitar behind KISS. Veteran session musician and keyboardist Tim Cashion, who has played behind Bob Seeger and Robert Palmer, rounds out the band. n

F

ormerly known as Dayglow, Life in Color is the world’s largest paint party, featuring some of the hottest names in Electronic Dance Music (EDM) today. Headlining the countdown to midnight in Atlantic City is famed electro house artist and DJ, Steve Aoki, who will be joined by Tommy Trash, Adventure Club, and resident Life in Color DJ, David Solano. Bader Field, which hosted the Metallica Orion Music + More festival in June, and the Dave Matthews Band Caravan the previous year, among other events, such as this fall’s A.C. Seafood Festival, will be lined with food and beverage vendors, as well as Life in Color and artist merchandise available for purchase. VIP tables are also available with bottle service in “paint-free” zones. Show-goers need not worry about the bitter cold of the night, as a custom-made heated tent will house the paint-splashing spectacular. “We’re building this custom heated tent that can hold up to 10,000 people plus the main stage production with lighting and sound, and all types of cool décor, with performers walking around,” says CEO and cofounder of Life in Color, Sebastian Solano. “We want to turn the whole thing into a different world. Because it’s custom-made, it makes you feel like you’re in a different place. With the DJs performing, the Life in Color sounds, visuals, the paint and everything, we want to transport you to a different world.” Solano, along with his partners Lukasz Tracz, Patryk Tracz and Paul Campbell, just recently decided to change the name of

Show-goers need not worry about the bitter cold of the night, as a custom-made heated tent will house the paint-splashing spectacular. their now larger-than-life paint party phenomenon from Dayglow to Life in Color. “As a brand we have been evolving in a new direction,” says Solano. “We want to be perceived as a lifestyle. We’ve created a whole new trend with the concept of the paint party. We thought Life in Color would be a bigger name, represent the culture of it, as we step forward to a new chapter in 2013.” Recently, DJs and electro artists have evolved into some of the most coveted acts at nightclubs and festivals, especially over the past year, which as been noted as Year of the DJ. Atlantic City has become a significant EDM destination, and with some of the most famous names in the genre lined up for this New Year’s Eve weekend, including Tiesto at Revel, is sure to bring 2013 in with a bass boom. Being that New Year’s Eve is such an illustrious event, it’s significant that so many prominent artists chose to spend their last performances of 2012 in Atlantic City. According to Aoki, who spoke to Atlantic City Weekly on a phone interview before catching a flight from London, it is not so

much the physical location as it is the people who live here. “[There were] actually a couple different offers and one was like playing in Thailand, off the island, like a private island gig,” says Aoki. “And then I was like A.C.? Thailand? Thailand would be sick, it’d be fucking sweet. But yeah, of course I picked A.C., because I love Atlantic City. More importantly, I love New Jersey. I love the Jersey crowd, the New York crowd, the Philadelphia crowd. All the surrounding areas of A.C., and that’s why I love coming there. It’s not really the city, it’s the people. The people there are awesome. Like, all my shows, even if they’re dressed to the nines they’re still raging fucking crazy. Really, really energetic crowd, really passionate crowd — they make it memorable each time.” Solano, who, along with his partners, initially selected Atlantic City’s Bader Field as the New Year’s Eve venue, shared Aoki’s love for the South Jersey and its surrounding area. “There are a couple reasons, but the main one is because it’s where we have the most fans,” says Solano. “The Northeast, the tri-state, even DC area … is so great, the

people are awesome. It’s where we have our biggest fan base. We always wanted to do a New Year’s Eve [event] and for our first one we said, ‘Let’s do it for our biggest fans who deserve it.’ We had to find a neutral spot so all the surrounding areas could come to the show. We thought it would be perfect because there are the casinos, the clubs, the restaurants; it’s a cool place to go. We were thinking about our fans. They can make a weekend out of it!” Atlantic City has been very much involved with the rising growth of the EDM culture, with artists like Aoki having evolved with the movement. “I feel like I had a residency at Borgata, I mean like once every other month at least,” he says. “I’m actually surprised how much I’ve come [to Atlantic City]. I’ve kind of grown with the scene too. I remember playing at Borgata as a DJ and not an artist, and playing whatever the club wanted me to play kind of thing. “And then as I evolved as an artist and started writing more records that people were getting familiar with me, I started just playing my own music, which has completely changed within the last year. It’s been a big shift, and I’m glad that I was part of that shift.” The celebration starts at 6pm on Monday, Dec. 31, and will last until 2am. Guests must be at least 18 years to enter, 21 to drink, and will need a valid ID for admission. Tickets are now available at lifeincolor. com/nye for $99, $159 and $250. Atlantic City will be hosting a healthy dose of EDM with artists like Dave Guetta (Dec. 28) at Borgata and Rusko (Dec. 29) at the House of Blues. Venues such as Providence at the Tropicana Quarter, Dusk at Caesars, the Pool at Harrah’s, HQ at Revel, and other venues in town are offering dance parties galore (see cover story). ■ see more online @

Last Chance to Catch ‘Legends’ egends In Concert, the long running tribute ensconced in the Legends in Concert Theater at Bally’s, will present a special New Year’s Eve performance on Monday, Dec. 31, 10:30pm, complete with party favors and a midnight countdown with the cast. There is also a show at 8pm that night. Those shows will be the last chance to see Legends in Concert for several months as the show is taking a winter hiatus, with a scheduled return March 5 when the first of five all-star line-ups for the year will kick off with the Blues Brothers, Madonna, Elton John, Dolly Parton and Stevie Wonder.. The current show features a particularly strong group of tribute artists presenting Carrie Underwood, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe and a big finish with “The King,” Elvis Presley. There is a reason the Legends in Concert name is well respected — the show always delivers on its promise to feature tribute artists who are good at what they do. Sara Hickey as Carrie Underwood presents such Carrie classics as “All American Girl,” and “Jesus Take the Wheel.” Sharon Owens presents her take as Barbra Streisand, and if you have the chutzpah to do Streisand, you better be good and she is superb. Her selections include “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “The Way We Were,” and a comedy bit featuring a Streisand rap and Babs’ lightning fast scatting

version of “Jingle Bells.” The superstar parade continues with the entertaining Corey Melton moon walking his way across the stage as Michael Jackson with “Billie Jean” and “Thriller.” Stacey Whitton’s Marilyn Monroe is part audience participation comedy routine and part singing (“Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend,” “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”). Kevin Mills provides the legendary finish as Elvis with “Burning Love,” “Suspicious Minds” and a delightful take on “Blue Christmas.” Taking the Elvis spotlight is Jersey boy Mills, who grew up in Cinnaminson, Burlington County. Mills has been an Elvis fan for a long time. “When I was nine years old I was listening to Elvis music and Tom Jones and Michael Jackson, but Elvis stood out to me. I started mimicking him as a kid at family parties and stuff like that.”

New Year’s Eve 2013 Party Guide Some may surpass Atlantic City in quantity, but not quality of options for celebrating the dawning of a new year. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

Y

ou’ve lived through the end-of-the-world scare and Hurricane Sandy (which for many may somehow seem linked), so now is the time to celebrate like there’s comfort in knowing there will be a tomorrow. No East Coast town does New Year’s Eve better than Atlantic City and its environs (yes, New York City, that includes you), so here are a few suggestions for those who have not yet gotten around to planning out their big night. You’re the same ones who should probably make “stop procrastinating” one of your New Year’s resolutions.

The Ebbitt Room in Victorian Cape May offers a cheery, jolly holiday adventure — and a creative menu. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

isiting Cape May during the holidays has become a family tradition passed down through multiple generations for locals and visitors alike. The town possesses an authentic Victorian atmosphere where each and every year, the season’s wonder is magically nurtured and recreated. With the bracing Atlantic Ocean just steps away at New Jersey’s southernmost point, one can almost envisage a windswept coastal English town from Dickensian lore. No destination in this still-great food town — don’t buy the hype about Cape May’s dining demise, folks — better represents the distilled essence of that spirit than The Ebbitt Room. Housed in the historic, restored Virginia Hotel — itself dating to 1879 — the Ebbitt’s pretty space transforms via an array of lights and decorations into a holiday spectacle. Including Santa himself, perched on the front of the building. At year’s close there is also big news to report from this prestigious facility. Executive chef Lucas Manteca — an enigmatic Argentinean and former Atlantic City Weekly Top 40 Under 40 honoree — officially parted company in August. His replacement is the equally dynamic, although more understated, Anthony Micari. A Mays Landing native, Micari unveiled his initial menu here on Oct. 29. The new executive chef’s body of work is formidable, particularly considering he only celebrated his 28th birthday on Dec. 8. After initially working for Susanna Foo, he moved on to New York’s BLT in late 2010, run by famed French chef Lauront Tourondel. A little over a year later, Micari returned home, “to help open Revel,” he says. “It was an easy decision.” The Ebbitt Room post became available when Manteca, a sort of culinary Icarus who seems often to opt for flying a bit too close to the sun, moved on to help run he and wife

With the bracing Atlantic Ocean just steps away at New Jersey’s southernmost point, one can almost envisage a windswept coastal English town from Dickensian lore. Dina’s newest personal venture, Cape May Point’s The Red Store. Commenting on his predecessor, Micari allows: “He is definitely an active risk taker,” adding that Manteca “likes to pick the best.” Having sampled the latest bill of fare, we can unequivocally state that Micari’s remake will do nothing but honor those high standards. This began with roasted beet salad — one of our “new classics” ubiquitous on upscale menus everywhere — dotted with strips of peppery arugula and bitter frisee, candied pecans and goat cheese.

A pair of seafood courses — yellowfin tuna tartare and a magnificent bacon-crusted scallop — followed. We especially delighted at the addition of pearl onions and mushroom jus to the latter — potent, earthy compliments to the pristine discs of seafood. Our favorite item this night — bias-cut triangular slabs of roasted pork tenderloin — were presented alongside an elegant vanilla parsnip puree. Baby carrots, apricots and a stripe of bing cherry glaze completed this fascinating course. We admired the kitchen’s daring, serving

pork at a correct — and quite pink — midrare. The result: fork-tender meat, practically oozing sweetness. Any further cooking might have rendered this, the leanest of all pig products, grainy, unpleasantly dry and grey in color. Parsnips, laced with just enough vanilla to be exotic but not cloying, proved an inspired piece of composed plating. Closing was a classic fillet of beef. Four thick slices were served with a crunchy salsify gratinee, which we sincerely hope Micari will return to the menu. Soon. Since then, he’s opted to replace it with a seasonal root veg — “gorgeous local sweet potatoes” — blended with Amaretto and mascarpone cheese. Another unique aspect of the Ebbitt is its synergistic relationship with their proprietary Beach Plum Farms, located in nearby West Cape May. The 60-acre, largely organic farm provides produce and eggs for not only the Ebbitt, but also other members of the Cape Resorts Group umbrella: Cape May’s Blue Pig Tavern and Rusty Nail and Atlantic City’s Teplitzky’s and Chelsea Prime. Micari mentions Beach Plum is presently raising their first 20 or so heads of boutiquey Berkshire swine, a British variant — that country’s oldest — much prized for its rich, heavily marbled meat. (FYI, if you can still recall your highschool literature class, a “rather fierce looking Berkshire” named “Napoleon” was the antagonist — and Stalin metaphor — in George Orwell’s classic Animal Farm.) Those prized piggies will be utilized in what Micari characterizes as a pair of “hoofto-snout harvest dinners” in late-spring and fall of 2013. For now, if you seek a cheery, jolly holiday adventure, replete with fine regional cuisine, feel free and indulge at Cape May’s Ebbitt Room. n

Party with Jane’s Addiction ‘Escape’ 2012 with the Cali rockers on NYE at the House of Blues at Showboat By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

ane’s Addiction always takes it up a notch for special shows. “And whenever we play New Year’s Eve, well, that’s a significant event for our band,” says drummer Stephen Perkins. “When we play Atlantic City, it’s going to be a party. We want people to be moving, drinking, having fun and fucking. That’s the kind of band we’ve always been. We’re a band that stimulates people with our music and our shows. When we play Atlantic City, we approach it like Las Vegas; it’s a carnival atmosphere. It’ll be fun since we’re in a groove right now.” Jane’s Addiction, which will play Monday, Dec. 31, at the House of Blues, is rolling while supporting the band’s first album in eight years, The Great Escape Artist. The band manages to appropriate the visceral power from its brilliant salad days back in the late 1980s when it emerged as the next band to break from Los Angeles. But the quartet also sounds contemporary with its fusion of the ethereal and the space between sounds. It’s a winning combination and the new material complements the vintage tunes. “We just decided to do what fits best for

“When we play Atlantic City, it’s going to be a party.” this album,” says Perkins while calling from his Los Angeles home. “We are who we are and so you’ll hear sounds that were part of this band 25 years ago. But we’re all about expanding that palette of sounds. We’re not about to be stagnant. Back when we started, we had to be adventurous and that remains the same.” Jane’s Addiction made a massive impact not long after forming a quarter century ago. There was a huge buzz around the band. Rolling Stone proclaimed that Jane’s Addiction would be the band to emerge from the West Coast in 1987. (The East Coast band, according to RS was Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers!) “We came out of such a special scene,” says Perkins. “There were bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were already established, Fishbone and so many really cool acts.”

But nobody sounded like Jane’s Addiction. The band combined guitar driven rock, primal percussion and a quirky, arty sensibility. “Me and [guitarist] Dave [Navarro] are younger than [vocalist] Perry [Farrell] and [former bassist] Eric [Avery] so we acted our age. We liked to play loud and fast. And then there was Perry and Eric, who were really into Bauhaus and bands like that, which are more subtle than what Dave and my influences were. The combination really worked well.” Jane’s Addiction reached rock’s upper echelon after releasing a pair of seminal albums, 1988’s Nothing’s Shocking and 1990’s Ritual De Lo Habitual. Most of the songs wear well. “People still go crazy for those songs and we’ll always play then,” says Perkins. “We feed off the energy from the crowd. The new

EVENT INFO songs are connecting with people as well.” Will Jane’s Addiction, which has released only five albums in 25 years, come back with a disc sooner than later? “I think the answer to that is definitely,” says Perkins. “We’ve really supported this album. We’ve played about 65 shows this year and we feel great as a band. I don’t think there’s a reason to take a break. I don’t want to just play the old songs. I think a band needs to make new music often. That’s what is best for a band. I don’t ever just want to be a nostalgia act. We get how good the response has been to the new songs.” Major League Baseball tabbed the first single “Irresistible Force (Met The Immovable Object)” as the bed for commercials during the playoffs. “That was incredibly cool,” says Perkins. “It’s cool since there is the recognition that we can still bring it. The other cool thing is that I’m a huge baseball fan. I was a shortstop as a kid and I still appreciate the game. We were very proud of that.” So what will Perkins do in Atlantic City after the New Year’s Eve show? “I’m just going to hang out and watch what people do,” he says. “It’s a celebratory night. People are going to get together and gamble, have fun and party like they do in Las Vegas, which is awesome to me. I’m going to perform and we’re all going to take it all in and mark what is a fascinating year. We’re going to try to give everyone something to remember. I think that’s what shows should be about because when I was growing up, I would go to shows and I’d remember these events because anything could happen. What’s special about Jane’s Addiction is that anything could happen when we step onstage. We have three musicians, who are locked in and we have a great singer. Those are the ingredients necessary to make something special happen.” While Perkins is chatting, the demands of his-three year old are audible. “I love being in this band, but what people don’t know about me is that my number one priority is being a great daddy. That’s what matters most to me in the world, especially when you look at the horrific events that [just] happened in Connecticut. You need to spend as much time as you can with your loved ones. That’s what it’s about. It’s about that and making the best music that you can.” ■ see more online @

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY PRESENTS THE 5TH ANNUAL

Nightlife Awards Oscar Worthy ‘Playbook’

Comedy and drama collide beautifully in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’; plus ‘Hitchcock’ by Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

Silver Linings Playbook Directed by David O. Russell • rated R

★★★ Second Look at Hitch Alfred Hitchcock was such an incredible personality that it shouldn’t be a surprise that two movies were made from his life this year. The first was the flat The Girl on HBO that looked at his creepy obsession with his blonde leading ladies. In Hitchcock, directed by Sacha Gervasi, his obsession is hinted at, but only to illustrate how it hurt his marriage to his wife and professional partner Alma Reville, who is given a serious glamour upgrade with Helen Mirren in the role. Anthony Hopkins, meanwhile, is buried in makeup beyond recognition as Hitch. As a film historian, I enjoyed this inside look at how a movie nobody wanted, Psycho, became Hitchcock’s biggest box office hit, but I can’t imagine how anyone who hasn’t studied Hitchcock would find much of interest in it. Capturing the essence of Hitchcock has eluded filmmakers twice this year. n

desperate to get his life on track. Lawrence, already an acclaimed and Oscar nominated actress (Winter’s Bone), has topped off her year as an emerging superstar thanks to The Hunger Games with a performance that will also earn an Oscar nomination. We knew she could handle drama, but her deft hand in comic line readings is unexpected and enchanting. Unlike the 2012 Eagles, this Playbook is full of winning moments.

ne of the highlights from my annual September trip to the Toronto International Film Festival was the irresistible new film from writer-director David O. Russell (The Fighter, Three Kings), Silver Linings Playbook, which has finally reached our shores Christmas day. The film stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in game-changing performances as two broken people with mental issues who find each other, and while that might sound like a drama, it is so funny it resists being so easily labeled. And, as an added bonus, the film is also a love letter to the city of Philadelphia and in particular, the passion of Eagles fans. Robert De Niro plays Cooper’s father, a rabid Eagles fanatic and bookie. That the native New Yorker is on screen trashing the Giants made me smile. Bradley is Pat, a man who has spent the last eight months in a state institution after he beat the crap out of the man have an affair with his wife. Newly released into the custody of his parents (De Niro, Jacki Weaver), Pat is still far from past his manic state, although he plans to stay calm and get his wife back. Seeing how manic his dad is as a Philadelphia Eagles fan, it’s clear that his family environment is not exactly the perfect place to find inner peace. The other half of this soon-to-be engaging, offbeat romance is Tiffany (Lawrence), a young widow whose issues include being so depressed she had sex with everyone at her job. When Pat and Tiffany connect, the film becomes a smart, unconventional love story that is as winning as it is believable. Unlike the usual run-of-the-mill romcom, this film bristles with life from the central core of the love story, to the quirky band of supporting players who add to the fun, including the hilarious De Niro, Chris Tucker as Pat’s buddy from the mental institution and the understated Weaver as a mom who just wants her son to be happy. Bradley elevates his sexy leading man persona to the next level, respected actor, with his Oscar-worthy performance as a man
