PINKY’S CORNER

Happy New Year! T By Pinky Kravitz

O MY RECOLLECTION, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME in many, many years that this column came out on the last day of a year. It is easy to write about the past year, but it is more interesting to contemplate what is going to happen in 2010. Federal officials have proclaimed that we are near the end of the economic problems we had over the past year-and-a-half. However, others proclaim that we will not see a complete turnaround until 2011. There is good news and bad news to report from the past year. President Barack Obama instituted the TARP program, which provided loans to our banks so that they could loan money to business owners throughout the nation. During the past few months, several of the banks have repaid their loans with interest — that is good news. However, the banks neglected to fulfill their obligation by providing loans to the businesses. At a recent meeting with representatives of the biggest banks, Obama held a White House conference urging them to open their pocketbooks and allow for loans to businesses throughout the nation. According to news stories I have read, the banks are still not fulfilling their obligation — that is bad news. Hopefully we will see it happen in 2010. Last year, I noted my belief that we would begin to see some progress in our economic conditions before the end of 2009. I noted that I am not an expert in statistical data, but I am a person who sees the glass half full and not half empty. I wagered a slice of the Original Fudge Kitchen’s delicious chocolate fudge that I’d be right. According to the statements of many within the government, my premise that there has been some progress in the economic conditions of our nation is true. Unfortunately, none of you accepted my proposition and, therefore, I will not receive slices of the delicious chocolate fudge.

2010 — A Good Year?

Will 2010 be a good year for Atlantic City? Let’s look first at a few of the good things that we noted were going to take place this year. On Feb. 6, the ACES train service between Atlantic City and New York City began. It took a while to make people aware of the fact that they had another means of transportation between the two cities. A recent statement showed that there was a loss of $6 million in its first 10 months of operation, which included pre-opening and start-up costs. Please be aware that three casinos — Borgata, Caesars and Harrah’s Resort — and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority are responsible for all financial obligations of the train. With the lessons learned from this year’s operation, it is anticipated that there will be a dramatic increase in the rail service in 2010. At the beginning of 2009, an improvement in air service to and from Atlantic City was announced by the South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA). The organization stated that in May, Spirit Airlines would begin offering direct service between Atlantic City and Boston. There would be one flight a day, and that flight has proved to be a successful one for Spirit as its occupancy

rate is over 90 percent. As a result of the successful daily run, Spirit will begin a second daily flight to and from Boston next May. The schedule will permit the opportunity to go to or from Boston and Atlantic City and return in the evening. There were two other airlines that began service this year at ACY. AirTran is now running a daily trip to Orlando and two trips per day to and from Atlanta, where you can connect with flights going around the world. The Atlantic City International Airport now has its first international air service. WestJet, the second-largest airline in Canada, provides service between Atlantic City and Toronto four times a week. WestJet will also offer connections throughout Canada. Operators of the new services are pleased with their occupancy rate to date, and in the first quarter of 2010 it is anticipated that there will be direct service to and from Chicago. Improvements have also been made in the airport’s terminal. There is now a direct escalator that takes you to the baggage-claim area from the second level, where you depart from your plane. In most instances you may pick up your baggage within 15 minutes. By the way, the SJTA has begun work on expanding the Atlantic City Expressway’s two westbound lanes to three lanes, between the 7 and 3.3 mile posts. Pertaining to casino development, it is my belief that Revel Entertainment will receive the necessary funding to complete its first tower within the next couple of months. Revel CEO Kevin DeSanctis has been working diligently to put his deal together so that they may begin working on the interior of the complex. The Tropicana is out of the bankruptcy court and final legal papers are being put in place so that Carl Icahn and his cohorts will soon be taking over full operation of the facility. In a related issue, there is a big battle looming in the bankruptcy court between the Trump Entertainment Resorts’ bondholders and Donald Trump, and Icahn and Beal Bank. Icahn bought 51 percent of the $486 million senior secured bank debt for about 93 cents on the dollar. A judge ruled that the 83-year-old investor could push his plan to take over the casinos alongside the bondholders and Trump’s plan. Trump could get a 10 percent equity stake in the company if his side wins. After spending $225 million to purchase a majority of the bank debt of the companies, Icahn is promising to pump another $225 million into the ailing gambling emporium. This is going to be an interesting year and I wish you and yours have the best one you have ever had. n

Celebrating a New Start

It’s not unusual for an incoming Atlantic City mayor (or returning incumbent) to celebrate their inauguration. But this year’s inauguration of Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford promises to be something special. The Jan. 8 gala at the Trump Taj Mahal is being touted as a true community celebration and also as a statement of hope for Atlantic City’s future. “First and foremost it’s a celebration of Mayor Langford winning the election, says Rita Mack, an Atlantic City businesswoman and one of the event’s organizers. “But I think as everybody on the committee was thinking about what we wanted to do, we were very encouraged by the steps Mayor Langford has taken to bring the community together and to look forward for the city. We are looking at this as the beginning of a renewal process for the city and we’re looking to the future after we emerge from this economy. Langford, of course, has a right to feel vindicated in his victory as he starts his first full four-year term after losing his office to Craig Callaway-supported Bob Levy in 2005 (Langford finished Levy’s term after Levy resigned, winning a special election in 2008). But as for the city’s future, Langford has already made strides to bring the city’s business and community leaders together by holding a summit on the city’s future in November (more are planned). As the city faces stiff competition from emerging casino markets all around it, Langford has named making a coordinated push to improve daily life in the city, as well as growing tourism, a priority. The $250 event, expected to draw more than 500 guests, includes dinner, live entertainment and dancing. Organizers expect some of the proceeds from the event to be donated to local charities. Resolutions in the Air H By Whitney Ullman

APPY NEW YEAR! THE GIFTgiving holidays are over, but now is the time when all the hype is about our personal resolutions and how we are going to accomplish them. To some extent, this day is a motivating factor to get our butts in gear, but in reality it almost becomes a habit for us to blurt out some easy-to-say resolution and then make an excuse a couple of months later when we don’t follow through. When I think New Year’s resolutions I think of weight loss, more time with the family, exercising, traveling, quitting smoking etc. However, when I posted the question of “What is your New Year’s resolution?” on Facebook, aside from the obvious, I did get many other ones such as: “To live within each moment and give back,” “to stay focused and enjoy everything life offers,” “to enjoy the little things as much as the big things in life.” Most of the responses have to do with giving back to each other, the community, your family. Staying focused on your endeavors and remembering that every moment you have you should feel gratitude. I feel that due to our environment and our economy, we are realizing that life is more than having lots of money, fancy houses and cars and things that we want. Be grateful for the small stuff. Be thankful for what you have instead of what you don’t. In 2010, make sure to exercise, keep yourself healthy, spend more time with the family and follow your dreams. Remember, you are your own judge and when you complete your inner goals you will have a strong sense of accomplishment. Once you have that, you can start giving back to the world one person at a time. I found this great article from Businesswire. com regarding a study commissioned from

Dorothy.com and conducted by Harris Interactive. It states that while women are more likely than men to make New Year’s resolutions (74 percent of women versus 58 percent of men) among adults who have ever made a resolution, men are more likely than women to always or often keep them (22 percent of men versus 14 percent of women). Ladies, isn’t that interesting? Their survey polled more than 2,000 adults in the U.S., asking how the population sets and achieves their resolutions. During the study they also found out that 66 percent of adults have ever made a New Year’s resolution, but only 17 percent always or often keep them. Men and women who have dreams in life cited financial limitations as the No. 1 obstacle (36 percent) preventing them from achieving their dreams, followed by lack of time and/or motivation (14 percent) and 33 percent of adults who have dreams in life have used online tools such as search engines and social-networking sites to help them achieve their dreams — gotta love modern technology. Ladies let’s kick it up a notch this year, and try to even out these statistics. n

FOOD & DRINK

An Il Mulino offering

The Place to Dine in ’09

Despite economic gloom there were some great restaurant stories this year in our region By Frank Gabriel

L

IKE TINY, GLITTERING STARS twinkling against the blackness of a winter night, Atlantic City regional restaurants continued to surprise — and often dazzle in 2009 — despite the most turbulent era for our industry in more than a decade. Let’s start with what could be the biggest story in the not-too-distant future, Pinnacle Corporation’s long-anticipated upcoming casino project, and its initial harbinger, Boardwalk-based Megan’s Good Grub and Pub. Offering a gastropub concept originated in Europe but still in infancy stateside, chef Joel Dincher has fashioned a menu that is diverse, fun and quirky yet also cost-conscious. We’ve only dined here twice, but have suggested the pretty, windswept eatery to friends, all of whom found the grub and pop-culture ambiance the makings of a good time. What we like best about the place is the chef’s pride evidenced by his insistence upon crafting virtually everything here from scratch ingredients. I mean, ya just gotta love a guy who’s house-made pickles ladled with fresh dill are a signature delicacy. Moving to existing casino operators, the Trump organization scored an enormous coup bringing New York City restaurateurs Il Mulino to Absecon Island early this spring.

The Taj-based facility boasts both a casual trattoria and a serious, whitegloved dining space, each with its own personality and bill of fare. The formal side also provides an oldschool element that has all but disappeared in today’s culinary world: tableside food preparation. During an April visit, we had the pleasure of sampling delicate porcini mushroom ravioli tossed before our eyes in an astonishing champagne truffle cream sauce and a salt-crusted whole branzino filleted and plated with the skill of a neurosurgeon. Not content to be left out of the competition for upscale Italian fare, Borgata opened its latest venture, Fornelletto, later in the year. Meaning “little oven” the cavernous, multi-level eatery is headed by NYC veteran chef Stephen Kalt. Bringing a bigcity sensibility to the shore, Kalt’s menu combines exotic influences with those more traditional to Italian cuisine. Like an apparently simple app of vivid green olives — Castelvetrano by name — with pecorino toscano cheese and toasted almonds. Or his masterpiece, thin tagliarini pasta with jumbo lump crab, sea urchin butter, sea asparagus (sometimes referred to as “sea beans”) and oven-dried tomatoes. The third in our triumvirate of casino newcomers is similar in origin, but

this time definitively filtered through the prism of New York City’s ItalianAmerican natives. Patsy’s, long an institution among discriminating diners — most notably one named Sinatra — opened in early ’09 at the Hilton. We were above all thrilled at the regal treatment bestowed here upon the noble artichoke; one of that European nation’s most adored and traditional vegetables. Stuffed with a tangy blend of black olives, garlic, capers, anchovy and bread crumbs, the soft inner folds of the triangular thistle — actually a member of the lily family — remained tender, luscious and sexy. Deep in the mainland of Atlantic County, Egg Harbor Township’s Feather bravely opened last spring at 6041 Black Horse Pike. Despite being fully ethnic in theory — owner/operators are Praveen and Satinder Vig — Feather’s cuisine is surprisingly diverse. And while Indian fare, both the more familiar southern and less ubiquitous northern style, is the jumping-off point here, Feather’s extraordinarily large menu defies the labels often associated therein. They’ve even managed to combine traditional Indian elements, like crispy, puffy naan bread, flash-baked inside a blistering 1,000-degree Tandoor oven, in new and novel ways. Their “naanwich,” despite a

Homer Simpson-esque moniker, might be the greatest lunch idea this writer has seen in a very long while. Feather is also a haven for the growing market of non-carnivores, with almost 30 vegetable-based entrees available. Closing out our final column for the year, we’d like to encourage you to check out a pair of nascent spots in our adoptive hometown of Ocean City. The first, 701 Mosaic (701 4th St.) serves authentic Jamaican, Caribbean and Mediterranean food, including the best jerk chicken we’ve ever had stateside. Try the Dip and Fall Back appetizer too, an enormous mound of crunchy fried plantain, cassava and/or batata chips sided with sauce and a real value at only $5.95. Formerly a local newsstand, Jon and Patty’s Coffee Bar and Bistro (637 Asbury Ave.) has quietly become one of the town’s busiest off-season establishments. Feeling the need to clean up your system after the revelry of the holidays? Sample their Bistro Veggie Bomb sandwich, a detox fiesta of field greens, tomato, purple onion, sprouts, avocado, cucumber, cheese and pesto mayo on thick cut black bread. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at fgabriel@acweekly.com see more online @

500 Days

Favorite Flicks From ‘Avatar ‘to ‘Zombieland,’ movies I loved in 2009 By Lori Hoffman

M

breakthrough technology and emotionally satisfying storytelling in Avatar lived up to my expectations. It’s a spectacular flight of fancy that has a strong enough story to keep up with — and be enhanced by — the OMG technology. The anti-romcom, 500 Days of Summer, was the sleeper hit of the summer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are terrific as lovers who are not quite perfect for each other. It was written by Margate’s own Scott Neustadter, who based his story (co-written with Michael H. Weber), on his own experiences with relationships and heartache, and was directed by Marc Webb. Robert Kenner’s Food, Inc. is a documentary/horror story that touches on the obesity epidemic, the soullessness of mass-produced and over-processed foods, Avatar and how little control the FDA has over 500 Days of Summer meat-packing plants that don’t seem to Food, Inc. care about E. coli bacteria. Y MANTRA AS AN OBSESSIVE moviegoer is my nickname: Moviejunkie. Many film critics present a bit of snobbery around the edges. However, as much as I love great dramas and foreign language films, I’ve never hidden my love of science fiction and other less highbrow genres. These are my “favorite” films of the year, not the ten best. As I put this list together, I realized it was not highbrow enough to quality as a best ten list. However, I was not about to cross Star Trek off my list just because it was not “important” enough for a best ten list. My favorite films for 2009 prove that my passion for movies is all over the map. Here then is that list, in alphabetical order:

kept the voice of the soldier from being heard. While watching director Kathryn Bigelow’s breathtaking, in-your-face look at a bomb disposal unit in Iraq, I recalled fragments of Jack Nicholson’s speech from A Few Good Men. You know the one, about wanting these men on the line, needing these men on the line. Maybe American audiences have rejected all these Iraq war-themed movies because we can’t handle the truth. We get to feel safe in our homes because of these men. We don’t think enough about how much we are asking of them. Quentin Tarantino, the great sculptor of genre filmmaking, has carved out another one-of-a-kind masterpiece with Inglourious Basterds. It’s a rollicking, wish-fulfillment revenge fantasy about getting Hitler that is presented with a graphic novel ambiance punctuated with moments of brilliant and far-from-cartoonish tension. J.J. Abrams has delivered a perfectly calibrated new Star Trek, balancing the expectations of obsessive longtime

Trekkies with a slam bang action picture that is entertaining the newer generations of sci-fi fans. Beam me up, Scotty, this Trek rocks. Over the years Pixar has almost singlehandedly turned me into an animation fan. Up is a beautifully balanced effort that will take you up, up and away on its beautiful balloons. Co-directors Peter Docter (Wall-E; Monsters, Inc.) and Bob Peterson (Monsters, Inc.; Finding Nemo), provide an emotionally appealing story that champions respect for the elderly. George Clooney gives the performance of his career in Up in the Air as a man whose job is to fly around the country and help companies downsize — he fires people. His Ryan Bingham is a man who loves air travel far too much and relationships on the ground far too little. Co-written and directed by my new favorite director, Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Juno). For my money Zombieland is the funniest comedy of the year, topping by a slim margin, The Hangover, with a witty, laugh-a-minute screenplay by the writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Director Ruben Fleischer combines blood-and-guts action with terrific performances by his cast, led by Woody Harrelson’s zombie killing zealot. n

BELIEVE IT WAS COMIC PAULA Poundstone who said, “I will get on board with CDs as long as they promise — nothing else!” Unfortunately, for CD Exchange owner Terry Shellock and the local community, digital music seems to be pushing out the CD and taking one of my favorite stores along with it. When the CD Exchange opened in 1997, it seemed like vinyl records were the medium pushed out to make room for compact discs, (ironically, vinyl is finding its own audience again). When I spoke with Shellock about his store closing, his attitude was equally sweet and bitter. “I enjoy running the store,” Shellock says, “but for the past four years sales have been decreasing by about four percent [per year]. I want to get out now before it’s just too late; before I’m really losing money.”

I suggested that maybe his problem of late wasn’t so much lack of interest in CDs as it was the economy forcing people to cut back. That’s when Shellock told me, “Really, with the economy doing poorly, there was a good chance I would have done equally good or better business from people looking to save money by buying used CDs.” Shellock adds, “The problem more so is that you have a whole new generation now who don’t buy CDs at all. They download the songs they want for free or do iTunes. I don’t see where I can compete with the digital market.” Logic tells me Shellock is right. My heart, however, will miss going into CD Exchange on a Sunday afternoon. It was a place to run into all my diverse friends. Sometimes I’d see musicians, DJs, editors;

they would catch me there checking out different sounds and looking for new artists whose music can’t be easily found or previewed at the big chain stores. The store carried thousands of used CDs, and many of the new releases had listening copies that could be checked out in the store. Perhaps the segment of the community that will be most negatively affected by CD Exchange’s closing will be the local independent artist. I feel the world should have the chance to buy their music, and CD Exchange gave local artists a home where the big chain stores don’t. If you walked into the CD Exchange today, you’d see a place nearly empty as blowout sales have been going on there since Black Friday. Currently, CDs are 50-percent off for used CDs and DVDs and $3 off new discs; starting Jan. 4, used discs are 75-percent off. Over the years CD Exchange grew its own character and personality. It’s been the closest thing we had in this area to a “cool” CD store. You could trade in old discs. If you didn’t see the Andrew Sisters or the Brothers Johnson in stock, they

would special order it for you. If you had a music project, you could arrange a consignment deal. I loved talking music and joking around with the staff, and even swapping stories with other customers. Even on my last visit I heard a version of the Beatles’ “Come Together” being performed by Tina Turner. A young girl was enjoying it with her mother. I didn’t get the chance to ask how this pre-teen girl even came across that song, but that’s the CD Exchange experience. For me, the CD Exchange will always be less about the CDs and much more about the experience of the exchange. Unfortunately, the store is scheduled to close Jan. 9, 2010. n

The Hall Goes Gospel S

Where: Boardwalk Hall, A.C. When: Saturday Jan. 2, 5pm How Much: $65, $50 and $35

By Michael Pritchard the city with gospel music and certainly many of the area churches have put on some wonderful concerts, Tesone says. “We think an event of this size should be a nice fit for the area and generate a lot of interest. It should be noted that since Boardwalk Hall, previously Convention Hall, has a history stretching back to 1929, it’s probably not the first gospel program at the arena. But since the refurbishment, the program is a first. The lineup of performers includes McClurkin, who was raised in Amityville, N.Y., amidst domestic violence and drug abuse. His aunt, who sang with gospel great Andrae Crouch introduced Donnie to the man who would prove to be his mentor. He later played keyboards with his church youth choir and eventually formed the McClurkin Singers with relatives and friends in 1979. He became a minister and started the N.Y. Restoration Choir, recording his first album I See A World in 1989. McClurkin was later diagnosed with leukemia, but continued to record music. An appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s show brought him fame and recognition. In 2001, McClurkin established his own Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport, N.Y.,

A New Year Gospel Celebration

A lineup of top acts hits the Boardwalk Hall stage in the first gospel concert there since its restoration in 2001 INCE THE RESTORATION OF Boardwalk Hall was completed in 2001, the historic venue has seen plenty of action, from Springsteen concerts to college basketball tournaments. Shows at the hall have covered everything from auto racing to the circus. But there’s one genre of entertainment that hasn’t made a debut at the hall — namely gospel music. Despite the success of gospel programs at various venues in Atlantic City, the Lord’s music hasn’t hit the new Boardwalk Hall’s stage. That changes Saturday (Jan. 2) when the hall brings in major gospel stars such as Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary, Fred Hammond and J Moss for “A New Year Gospel Celebration. For Boardwalk Hall organizers, the sudden influx of gospel is something they’ve been trying to accomplish for a while. “We’ve talked about having a large gospel event for a long time, says Greg Tesone, general manger of Boardwalk Hall. “But it’s always been a question of setting up the date with the right promoter at the right time. When this concert came to us, it was with someone we’d worked with before and we said we’d love to do it. “The House of Blues has had success in

while remaining focused on his musical works, recording Again in 2003 and the double CD Psalms, Hymns & Spiritual Songs in 2005, each one capturing Grammys. He most recently recorded We All Are One (Live in Detroit) with guests CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, Mary Mary and Karen Clark-Sheard. Urban gospel superstars Mary Mary have won numerous awards since recording their first single, “Shackles (Praise You) in 2000. Sisters Tina and Erica Campbell’s latest album The Sound, held the No. 1 position on the Billboard Gospel Album Chart for more than six months since its release in October 2008. The sisters grew up as part of a large family of nine children in Inglewood, Calif., with both parents active in the ministry and church choir. Fred Hammond has been a songwriter, bassist, vocalist, musical arranger and producer for 25 years. As a solo artist, founder of the urban group Commissioned, and his work with Radical for Christ combined, Hammond has sold more than 7 million albums. He is founder and CEO of Face To Face Productions Corporation and served as producer for more than 80 album projects. His 1998 album Pages of Life;

Chapters 1 & 2 went double platinum and was No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel charts for more than 15 weeks. His latest release, 2006’s Free To Worship, also topped Billboard’s gospel charts and ranked as one of the year’s top-selling gospel albums. Hammond has parlayed his musical and touring success onto the big screen, appearing in the movie The Gospel with a cast of leading gospel artists, and has produced the soundtrack for the film Mama I Wanna Sing. He wrote and directed the musical drama Been There, Done That. Singer/musician/songwriter J Moss hails from gospel-music royalty as the son of Bill Moss Sr., founder of the ‘70s act Bill Moss & The Celestials; the nephew of Dr. Mattie Moss Clark and cousins to the Clark Sisters. Born and raised in Detroit, J Moss began singing at age four with his brother Bill, Jr., and as the Moss Brothers, they recorded two albums in seven years. In 2004 he released The J. Moss Project, a compilation that featured his tenor voice and strong choir backing. He released Billboard Gospel albums chart topper and Grammy nominated V2: The Voice Returns in 2007. His newest work, Just James, is a very personal project that reflects the challenges and relationships of his life.
