Ocean City’s First Night Bash

Do you view New Year’s Eve as primarily a celebration for grown-ups, with resolutions, champagne toasts and tossing back a few drinks until the ball drops? Well in Ocean City, the answer would be an emphatic “No!” For the past 19 years, families have been spending N.Y.E. together through O.C.’s annual First Night Celebration, which starts 4pm Friday, Dec. 31, and ends with a spectacular fireworks display at midnight, Jan. 1. The festivities include the First Night buffet (4-9pm) in the cafeteria of Ocean City High School that is $20 for adults and $12 for children, and also features 60 shows/events at 16 locations throughout Ocean City. All shows are accessed by purchasing a First Night button for $14, and they include magicians, jugglers, games, puppeteers and a variety of musical groups including string bands, barbershop quartets, folk and gospel music, Japanese drummers and the return of three-time Grammy award-nominated Trout Fishing in America. Your participation in First Night also helps support a variety of local scholarships and charities, including the Ronald J. Moretti Foundation, the Hero Campaign, and the Waves of Caring that provides toys and clothes for needy children during the holidays. On Saturday, the “First Day at the Beach” celebration will include a 5K run starting at 1pm and the “First Dip in the Ocean” at 2pm. Call 391-0060 or go to firstnightocnj.com for more info. — Ray Schweibert

Jazz Corner Returns

Last year the Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation’s head Henrietta Shelton and upand-coming tri-state promoter Malkio (of Malkio Entertainment Group) wanted to try something new: take the weekly jazz series that Shelton’s CBBHF has helped to bring to the Atlantic City Boardwalk for the past decade — with its touted national acts and noteworthy locals opening — and bring it indoors for the winter. So by the raging fire, and with jazz combos and spoken-word artists performing, the Jazz Corner series was born. The Chelsea in Atlantic City, with its retro feel that just calls for good jazz music to be played within, embraced the idea last year, extending it weeks past the initial endof-series date. “The atmosphere is New York style,” says Shelton. “I don’t think any other place in A.C. has this kind of ambiance.” This year, the Chelsea hosts the event again — every Wednesday night — with a happy hour on the 5th Floor from 6-7pm and performances starting at about 7pm. Following two consecutive Wednesdays of live music (with Pete Chavez on Dec. 22 and ZAMA on Dec. 29) the upcoming line-up includes Dwain Davis & Friends (Jan. 5) and Tony Day & Friends (Jan. 12). Expect that this series gets extended into February. Check chickenbonebeach.org for updates. — Jeff Schwachter

HAT HAPPENS WHEN JERSEY boys grow up? They become men, of course. Midtown Men, to be precise. Christian Hoff, Daniel Reichard, Michael Longoria and J. Robert Spencer, the original stars of the 2005 hit Broadway musical Jersey Boys, are out there on their own now. They’re touring under the name the Midtown Men, a concert act that’s more than just the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the ’60s singing group whose story is told, warts and all, in Jersey Boys. Their current tour, which has been warmly received in 46 cities in the United States and Canada, wraps up at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City Friday night with a New Year’s Eve performance. Liberated from the artistic shackles of the characters they portrayed in the Broadway show, the Midtown Men have begun exploring the music of other ’60s pop and rock stalwarts like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Jackson Five and the Mamas & Papas. Still, the Four Seasons tunes are easily the highlight of their concert set list. “It’s a small percentage of our show, but it’s a very key and exciting part of our show because we get to reunite with the sound that we found [playing] the Four Seasons,” Hoff says during a recent chat from his Los Angeles home. Hoff, who won a featured actor Tony Award for his portrayal of Four Season Tommy DeVito, says audiences can finally learn more about the actors because they’re not constrained by the characters they played on Broadway for three years and over 1,000 performances. “[We’re] four very strong personalities, four very talented individuals, and four guys who not only butt heads but join forces every day,” he explains. “We’re like four brothers, and it’s really exciting to see how we deal with those dynamics and the challenges that everyday life brings. And then to carry that onto the stage has really become a large part of our style, a sort of Rat Pack way we deal with one another.” Although they didn’t meet until they were cast in the musical in 2005, Hoff, 42, says he and his stage partners know one another “inside out” and rib each other constantly on stage and off. “We know each other’s flaws, each other’s strengths and we play off it, and

the audience gets to know us in ways that they never knew us before,” he says. When the four artists left the Broadway show, it was to move on to other performing challenges, says Hoff, who earned his first show business paycheck when he was just eight years old. Hoff was cast in a New York revival of Pal Joey in 2008 but had to bow out of that show when he injured his foot during a preview performance. Reichard went on to play the title role in a New York City Opera production of Candide. Spencer received a Tony nomination for the play Next To Normal and Longoria became the featured vocalist in a short-lived Cirque du Soleil show titled Banana Shpeel. Even while they were performing in Jersey Boys, they were able to do side gigs at galas, fundraisers and private parties, with some restrictions. “It gave us the opportunity, out of necessity, to sing songs other than the Jersey Boys/Four Seasons tunes, because while were under contract [to the show], we couldn’t sing any of those songs,” he explains. Touring as the Midtown Men, they’re permitted to use their connection to Jersey Boys in their publicity material and on marquees. That’s been key, especially for audiences who knew the Broadway show but weren’t familiar with the actors who created the roles. “Part of our success, if not all of our success, has to do with where we come from,” he says. Besides the live concerts, the Midtown Men are also laying down tracks for what will become their debut studio album. “That’ll be taking our focus in the early part of [2011], and then we should have something ready to release in late spring,” he says. “At the same time, we’re routing our new tour. The whole thing has been a true learning experience for us as we bring all of our skills into play as the producers of our own show.” ÊN

T’S DIFFICULT TO SAY THAT Atlantic City casinos had a good 2010, what with ever-declining gaming revenue and the effects of new competition — and poker rooms — in neighboring states. But there have been some bright spots, and many of those have been in the city’s poker rooms. From the Borgata Open to record badbeat jackpots, at least one part of the resort’s gaming industry is thriving. With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top poker news stories for A.C. this year.

June: Billy O’Neil, of College Park, Md., wins the Borgata Summer Open and $180,595. The $2,000 buy-in event attracted 321 players. With the WSOP underway in Vegas, the summer open was dominated by local pros and amateurs.

January: The Caesars Atlantic City badbeat jackpot hits for $533,958, then a record for an A.C. casino (and possibly any U.S. casino). The growing jackpot creates weeks of frenzy in the Caesars poker room.

July: The WSOP circuit announces a reorganization of its events. Harrah’s Resort gets to host a $10,000 regional championship event in December as part of the reorganization.

February: Pro Jeff Madsen wins the Borgata Winter Open’s main event, taking in $625,000. The event drew 766 entries and a $2.45 million prize pool for the $3,300 event. The open is a great success, attracting more than 1,500 players to the first event, despite several frigid days when the Borgata lost its hot water supply to a water main break.

Good Morning America. May: The Tropicana ups the minimum hand for its bad-beat jackpot to quad eights. It’s the first of a series of moves by A.C. casinos to raise jackpot totals on the wildly successful bad-beat promotions.

August: Caesars Entertainment announces it will combine the bad-beat jackpots of all four of its properties into one massive jackpot. The first jackpot is set at $524,000. It hits less than three days later for $535,000 and is reset to $100,000.

WHITNEY’S RADAR

Phones Work Both Ways By Whitney Ullman

T

HIS PAST WEEKEND WE LOST another loved one in our family, my father-in-law, Dr. Robert Bruce Ullman, OD. His suffering finally ended and he is now at much-deserved peace. According to Jewish custom, after a funeral we follow a tradition called “sitting shiva.” In layman’s terms, this is a period of seven days where the family of the deceased stays in their home while their relatives and friends visit. It was so nice to see everyone willing to take a break from their busy lives to make sure their loved ones were taken care of — some bringing food-and-fruit baskets and platters, and some coming armed with great memories to share. Whichever the case, the important thing is that during this somber time, we find comfort in fond memories and honest conversation. It was heartwarming to witness old friends of the family share stories and even get a few laughs from the mourners. Everyone is seemingly

in good spirits considering the circumstances and the feeling of having support from so many people is truly gratifying. As the evening comes to an end, you hear things said like, “I hope to see you again under better circumstances” or “Call me, let’s get together soon.” Later that night, a couple of us were sitting around the dinner table and the phenomenon of the “receive-only phone” came up. The topic arose because, as someone was preparing to leave, they remarked, “You know where I live.” Slightly offended, the reply was, “You know where I live too.” It was innocent enough banter, but in truth included a slight jab both ways and went beyond its surface meaning. It quickly became the evening’s hot topic, making us ponder: “Are phones meant to just receive calls or are they for calling out too?” The answer is obvious, and I’m sure we can all relate on many levels. Often we say to people, “Let’s hang out,” or “Call

me” or “Oh my God it’s been forever, we have to catch up!” But then we sit around and wait for that person to call us. Well, I say, “Shame on you!” Telephones work both ways, so why are we waiting for others to call us? Why do we always complain that we don’t have many friends when we’re not putting out the effort to cultivate new ones? It’s kind of funny that, in today’s world, with texts, e-mails, etc., we lose that human touch. We yearn to hear someone’s voice, or receive a personal card via “snail mail,” yet we don’t often think of reciprocating. Doesn’t it make you smile and isn’t it exciting when you get an occasion card in your home mailbox? It’s a treat, right? Well it’s the same when you call someone. Believe me, I am guilty too — it’s just easier and more convenient for me to text most of the time. But it always impresses me when I get a call. I hear the inflection in people’s voices and realize the importance of

communicating effectively by talking, and not guessing what they’re feeling by reading a text. We are currently embarking on a new year and making attainable resolutions for ourselves. Please make sure you add one more to your list, because the point here is that if you have an old friend or even a close family member who you want to stay in contact with, or care deeply for, then make sure to be more personal with them. Turn your phone into a dualpurpose machine where receiving and sending are equally necessary. As the old yet relevant AT&T saying goes: “Reach out and touch someone.” N

REETINGS AND SALUTATIONS. Hope you had a blessed Christmas with family and friends, and now, as we celebrate the coming new year, a healthy, prosperous, and happy 2011 to one and all. And we’ll celebrate New Year’s Eve together at the Trump Taj Mahal. Don’t know if any more tickets are available as I write this, but call the box office at 449-5150 to find out about that and other events at the Trump properties. The big news for the New Year — the Geator returns to KOOL 98.3 weekdays from 5-7pm over the Geator Gold Radio Network. We’ll start in the next few weeks. But now, time for your questions. For the meatballs, it’s a combination of veal, pork, and beef, two egg yolks, hard Italian bread soaked in water or milk, using only the insides of the bread, fresh parsley, basil, and a handful of locatelli, parmesan, and romano cheese. Mix this all together, form balls with your hands, fry in a pan with olive oil and garlic, turning the meatballs around until brown and crispy all over. Take them out of the pan, combine the ingredients for your gravy, put the meatballs in the gravy, and let them simmer while the gravy cooks.

5 Questions With... James Valentine of Maroon 5 By Lori Hoffman

Maroon 5 plays the House of Blues Dec. 31

I

previously? I think it’s a continuation of what we’ve been doing. I think over the years we’ve created a certain sound and we’re exploring it further on this record. How would you define that sound and what do you think makes it successful? The best way to describe it is soul-influenced rock. It’s resonated with people because of the themes of the songs. Adam [Levine] always talks about relationships and heartbreak, which are universal themes. Adam’s voice, too, just connects with a lot of people. You’ll be here for a New Year’s Eve show. Have you done them in the past and are they crazy? I love New Year’s Eve shows. Ever since I started playing music, I always seem to be working on New Year’s Eve. There’s an extra energy in the air — everything could easily go off the rails and it usually does.

You’ve played Atlantic City before. Are you looking forward to returning now that all this added excitement has been added by the TV series Boardwalk Empire? I haven’t been able to get into Boardwalk Empire yet, but I guess that will be my preparation for [playing in town] getting caught up on that show. We played there on New Year’s Eve about four years ago. I remember the weather was really poor and we were trying to get back to New York Is Hands All Over a new direction for the City for a party with friends. The roads band or an extension of what you’ve done were icy and we barely made it back. N How did you get into music? My older brother had a band and they rehearsed in the basement. I’d sit at the top of the stairs and listen to them and that was really exciting. Once I heard a cassette tape of Rush, I really got interested in playing the guitar. We all [his band mates] came of age during the grunge era, specifically, the record Ten by Pearl Jam. That really taught me how to play guitar.

N A ERA WHEN MUSIC STARS RISE and fall at the whim of Internet downloads, Maroon 5, a band that combines well-crafted pop music with an R&B sheen, has sustained a solid fan base since its 2002 debut album Songs About Jane, featuring the hit singles “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love” and “She Will Be Loved.” The band’s followup, 2007’s It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, was another multi-platinum hit topped by the single “Makes Me Wonder.” Released this past September, the band’s third studio album, Hands All Over has been a critical success. The All-Music Guide calls it “[Their] best album, capturing their character and craft in a cool, sleek package.” Before launching a 2011 international tour, the band will perform a New Year’s Eve set at Showboat’s House of Blues. Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine talked with Atlantic City Weekly about the band and the show.

Dining Distinctions of 2010 By Frank Gabriel

OST OF YOU WILL PROBABLY be more than happy to bid adieu to 2010. And with good reason, since the nation’s economy disproportionately affects a primarily seasonal market like Atlantic City and its environs. What remains equally undeniable to anyone paying attention is that the southern New Jersey shore continues to be one of the most dynamic, relevant restaurant regions in the nation. The year 2010 was headlined by a trio of openings from celebrated chefs with national reputations, albeit in dissimilar formats. Luke Palladino — the wunderkind behind original Borgata entities Specchio and Ombra — set up shop in a tiny, landlocked strip mall space near Tilton and Route 9 in Northfield in early spring. Serving handcrafted, authentic Italian fare from a boutique, BYOB environment, Palladino’s focus and energetic persona shone brightly. A few miles east, in midtown Atlantic City, New York-based Carl Redding commenced operations late summer. Specializing in authentic southern cuisine, Redding’s recipes run the gamut from low and slow cookery like ribs, mac-n-cheese and greens to spectacular fried chicken. Redding’s venture is easily the most ambitious private restaurant to open locally in several years. This also marks a return to the big stage for its larger-than-life chef, a dude chock full of star quality. From the casino side of the ledger, Fin at the Tropicana bucked the current trend of outsourcing dining venues. Featuring seafood in an aquatic, ocean-fronting

environment, chef Demetrious Haronis’ bill of fare extensively pays homage to locally sourced product. Starting with Cape May salt oysters and including Jersey littlenecks, flounder and day-boat scallops, Fin showcases the finest the mid-Atlantic region has to offer. This admirable philosophy encompasses swordfish from Block Island, R.I., fisheries, Point Judith (also Rhode Island) calamari and, of course, Maine lobster. Down Pacific Avenue at the Hilton, a trio of new eateries opened simultaneously on the second floor. Most notably, the third celeb chef to grace us with his presence was Kerry Simon at steak house Simon Prime. Serious carnivores will require a special trip here to sample the signature Tomahawk rib chop. Served up with a foot-long, Flintstonian bone, this 26-ounce monster instantly became

the most outrageous, eye-catching cut of beef available in the region. Across the hall, you’ll find Atlantic City’s first freestanding upscale burger emporium — yes, we know about Gallagher’s but consider that part of a larger entity — exactly as requested by this writer in an early 2010 “wish list feature: Nick’s Burger Bar. Named in homage to Hilton honcho Nick Ribis, the menu allows a choice from a halfdozen different meats, including two beef options, lamb, turkey, veal and buffalo all crafted to order. Diners also select from among a half-dozen cheeses, five types of bacon (one is perennial shore favorite, pork roll) an equal number of veggie toppings and six sauces. The final of Hilton’s upgraded restaurants is also its most diverse, PanAsian Ono. Their menu carves a broad

swath across that massive continent, encompassing Japanese sashimi, sushi and miso, sticky Thai wings, grilled Szechuan pork ribs, Peking duck spring rolls and Korean-style beef short ribs. On the subject of Asian fare, Showboat’s petite Oshi, headed by former Susanna Foo chef Tony Fok, dazzled with everything that emerged from the open-air kitchen during a late October repast. Of special interest are sashimi presentations, the product of world-class knife skills, and hearty noodle dishes like the chef’s signature item, seafood udon soup. Well-established local southern food/ barbecue providers Kelsey & Kim’s opened their second location this summer in A.C.’s inlet section. After more than a decade successfully managing a well-respected Pleasantville soul food outlet, K&K’s now looks to compete with Redding’s in what is suddenly a competitive Absecon Island market for America’s original indigenous cuisine. Other notable moves in the last 12 months include the debut of 800 Bay in Somers Point. That historic Victorian property provides some of the region’s most dramatic, sweeping water views. Perhaps the biggest non-story of 2010 was the closing of a100-plus year old landmark, Busch’s Seafood in Sea Isle City. Reported extensively in mainstream media sources as all but a done deal, ownership’s planned sale to developers was scuttled by a common conundrum — inability to obtain financing. A recent expedition to the closed eatery revealed that neither signage nor equipment had yet been removed. Ê N

Teena Marie R.I.P. By Ray Tyler

W

H E N E VE R I L I S T EN T O T H E classic R&B cut “Fire and Desire,” there is a part in the song that really chills me to the bone (in a good way.) It’s when Teena Marie moans — on key — the words “love them and leave them.” The song, with Marie’s mindblowing, heart wrenching, and a passionate, almost scat-like singing, was where we met musically for the first time. Ever since Marie has had a special place in my heart. So, you can imagine how I felt when, on Sunday, Dec. 26, I woke from a nap to find out (via the Internet) that R&B legend and one-time Rick James prodigy Teena Marie had passed away at age 54. From first hearing Marie sing through See more remembrances at acweekly.com my radio via WUSS in the early 1980s to her 2010 Mother’s Day appearance at ist and Absegami High alumna): “I’ve Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, Marie could seen Teena perform at Boardwalk Hall bring a song to life like no other singer. and in Philly. I watched her jump from percussion to bass and I was amazed! I will always aspire to be as great an artist [as she was]. We lost a huge icon in soul. It hurts that I’ll never hear her sing ‘Portuguese Love’ again. But her music will always live on in my heart.

DJ Do It (former Rap City DJ): “Teena was a black voice trapped in a white body.” DJ Able (DJ for A.C. hip-hop band 120): “Teena Marie definitely had one of the most distinctive voices in music. And she could rap. She showed the ’80s R&B artists of her era how it should be done. Even artists like Prince and Stevie Wonder, who were fascinated by hiphop, did not lyrically master the art of rap performance as well as Lady T.”

Marie’s musical legacy is a brand of soul that cannot be duplicated or replaced in today’s pop-music age of Auto-Tune. Likewise, her long-standing career in music can never be matched by the latest 20-something willing to sing as long as she’s wearing a push-up bra. In fact, Marie was about to embark on more touring before she passed away. The late Marie’s voice, timing and songwriting are what you would call “the real thing.” Her legacy is also peculiar in that she was a white performer who excelled in the genre of R&B music. She was referred to as “Lady T” over the years as she gained more and more respect in the R&B world. Sadly, Marie got little respect from listeners who were not checking out R&B. Unlike Hall & Oates, or other white artists who placed hits on the soul charts, Marie seemed happy to make “black music” for “black people.” There are, however, many non-black music lovers who love Marie’s music. Artists such as Joss Stone, Robin Thicke, and even Eminem, could be called direct descendants of Marie. Marie was one of the best musicians of any color that R&B ever produced. Here’s what other performers and other industry people had to say upon hearing of Marie’s sudden death on Christmas 2010. Barbara Sheree (Billboard charted art-

he Atlantic City area had a year that had people looking so far forward, it was almost easy to forget what was actually happening right now. Mired in recession and reeling from new competition, Atlantic City and southern New Jersey seemed to just want to hunker down and wait for better times. But in July, when Gov. Chris Christie announced his plan to have the state takeover Atlantic City’s “tourism district,” it became official. A.C.’s future became a matter of here and now. From then on every weekend line-up of casino shows, every fortunate TV premiere (Boardwalk Empire) and every new casino mogul on the scene was given one charge — make southern New Jersey cool again. As far as the economy and the new state-run Atlantic City “tourism district” goes, 2011 could be a year of big change. But as we look back on 2010, remember, there are still a lot of things the area does right. We still have hot headliners, great cheesesteaks and subs everyday, big jackpots, amazing restaurants and yes, even a snowfree season when the sun rules the beaches and Boardwalks. So as we put 2010 in the rearview mirror, we remember that even with prophecies of doom all around, southern New Jersey is still on a helluva ride towards the future. — Mike Pritchard

True Grit

Best Movies of 2010 Ten movies that were worth the trip to the multi-plex this year By Lori Hoffman

Winter’s Bone

Co-written and directed by Debra Granik, Winter’s Bone is that rare modern movie that explores the crushing poverty of America’s rural regions, a Grapes of Wrath style story with a country noir twist that feels authentic, especially in the brilliant, Oscar-worthy performance of Jennifer Lawrence as a fierce teenager who has to make grown-up decisions. n To read more about movies and other topics covered by movie critic Lori Hoffman visit the ‘Atlantic City Central’ blog at http://blog.acweekly.com/

This remake is a western with a Coen twist that also remembers the original with a fond tribute. The Coens have made the iconic figure of lawman Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) grittier than the John Wayne original. There is a ton of dry humor in True Grit and the Coen brothers extract every laugh out of the numerous opportunities. Hailee Steinfeld, as the 14-year-old Mattie Ross, delivers a sassy, indelible debut.
