DELAWARE COUNTY REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE – OFFICIAL MAGAZINE

From the Desk of Trish McFarland As our fiscal year comes to a close, we look back at our 2017-2018 year in review and recall our Annual Membership Luncheon on Wednesday, June 20 at Springfield County Club. We also spotlight a Lifetime Achievement honoree, recognize our boards and graduate our Leadership Delaware County Class. See page 11 for details about our leadership program and how to apply. Also stop by our office to check out our Year in Review piece and see the leaps and bounds of progress the Chamber has achieved over the past 12 months.

The end of June also offers two really fun events. Our Young Professionals are hosting their 4th Annual Kickball Tournament in Folsom. For a bigger splash, we have an event that has made the news a few times, Sips in Sea Isle on the Friday before Independence Day. We’ve partnered with the Sea Isle City Chamber and LPL Financial to bring you a networking event in DELCO EAST at Kix McNultey’s in Sea Isle. It will be a tremendous opportunity and an excellent way to kick off Fourth of July weekend! As the summer months arrive, so does a handful of events that allow you to grow, learn, meet and have fun. The summer season is the most popular time to travel, dine out and attend entertainment events. As we emphasize in this issue, the Delaware County Chamber can also be a resource to you outside of the professional world. Check out our calendar and although we try to keep it light over the summer, don’t forget about us and the events we have going on! We hope that nothing but warm days, sunshine and a few moments to relax await us. Stay cool this summer. We hope to see you at a Delaware County Chamber event soon! Best wishes, Trish McFarland, President Delaware County Chamber of Commerce

DELAWARE COUNTY

DINING Delaware County is home to a wide variety of authentic and delicious restaurants. Media is best known for the food scene that they have centrally located on State Street. There is a restaurant for everyone; you can find everything from Mexican and Italian to Greek and Sushi.

Delaware County is a great place to grab a bite and have a memorable dining experience. Every year, from May until September, Media hosts Dining Under the Stars where participating restaurants put their tables out in the street on Wednesday nights and allow for a unique dining experience. Dining Under the Stars attracts hundreds of locals and tourists to State Street to indulge in great food, while being able to enjoy the summer weather. No matter what your taste buds desire, Delaware County is home to restaurants that will satisfy your cravings. Whether you are looking to do dinner on the cheap or have a fine dining experience, Delaware County is a great place to grab a bite and enjoy a memorable meal or snack.

ENTERTAINMENT After dinner, you might want to visit Rose Tree park for a free outdoor concert. Delaware County is hosting its 43rd Summer Festival in Rose Tree Park from June 13 until August 12. Almost every night, there will be a free concert by a variety of artists at the scenic outdoor amphitheater. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday through Sunday evenings, and two morning children’s shows begin at 10:00 a.m. You will not need to travel far for a Broadway-like experience because Delaware County has a vast theater scene. Since 1976, Upper Darby Summer Stage has been educating young people and entertaining families through the power of theater. Summer Stage is a great opportunity for young people to get involved with a local theater and a great opportunity for residents to support a local theater by attending one of their 72 annual performances. In addition to Summer Stage is the Media Theater, which has won 86 Broadway World Awards for ‘Best of Philly Theater’ from 2012-2017. This summer will feature the musical production of Heathers and a few vocalists.

Orchards in Media also provides a family-friendly environment where families can pick their own fruits and vegetables, get lost in a corn maze and feed animals. During the summer season, they host a variety of festivals to celebrate a fruit or vegetable coming into season. This summer, they will be hosting a Raspberry Celebration (June 24), Blueberry Festival (July 7), Corn & Blackberry Celebration (July 22), Peach Festival (August 4) and Tomato Celebration (August 26). Located in Chester is Harrah’s Philadelphia and Talen Energy Stadium. At Harrah’s you can catch a show, visit the casino or watch live horse racing. In addition, Harrah’s is home casual, upscale and has fine dining restaurants. At Talen Energy Stadium you can watch the Philadelphia Union take on an opponent in a competitive soccer match. Home to a variety of entertainment experiences, you can always find the perfect event. Whether you are looking for free/cheap events or willing to risk it all at a casino, Delaware County has the entertainment and events that you are looking for.

TRAVEL While some weekends are spent at the shore, in Delaware County we are fortunate enough to have 191 square miles of beauty within our county. From Radnor to Chester, Lansdowne to Chadds Ford this area is full of tourist opportunities. This allows for a great chance to explore the county, while still getting away from home. Make sure to put one of the many historic attractions on your to-visit list this summer. You can visit the precise spot where William Penn landed when he first arrived in the territory of Pennsylvania in 1682. The monument dedicated to William Penn’s landing is located in Chester. You can also march along the Brandywine Battlefield in Chadds Ford where the American army, led by General George Washington, fought the British army on September 11, 1777. When family comes to visit, they will have a wide variety of hotels to choose from. Most hotels are situated in Tinicum township due to the proximity to the airport, but there are plenty of other hotels spread throughout the county. With about 100 hotels in the county, it will not be difficult to find one that suits your needs and budget. Check out all of the events happening in Delaware County on page 4!

HOW TO AVOID FOOD-BORNE ILLNESS while Traveling Abroad

T

raveling is one of the best things you can do to promote a healthy lifestyle. It helps your mental, physical and emotional health. Although there can be stressful moments, such as getting there, stepping out of your everyday surroundings is good for the soul. As much as you may love to travel, tasting food from around the world can cause sickness. Did you know food can be contaminated with more than 250 food-borne diseases, including bacteria, parasites, chemicals, viruses and toxins?

According to the Food and Drug Administration, about 48 million cases of food-borne illnesses are reported annually, which is the equivalent of 1 in 6 Americans each year. Additionally, each year, these illnesses result in an estimated 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths.

“After you consume a contaminated food or drink, it may take hours or days before you develop symptoms,” said Sonaly Patel, M.D., gastroenterologist at Mercy Gastroenterology at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. “The symptoms may range from mild to severe and depends on the type of germ swallowed. The most common symptoms of food-borne illness include upset stomach; stomach cramps; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; and high fever.” While it is unlikely you can avoid food-borne illnesses entirely, Dr. Patel encourages travelers to follow these tips to help reduce the likelihood of sickness.

❚ Know which foods are most likely affected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s list of foods most likely to contain food-borne illness culprits include chicken, beef, pork or turkey; vegetables and fruit; raw milk, cheese or other dairy products; raw eggs; and, seafood or raw shellfish. Also, the CDC provides a list of countries that pose high risk for developing foodborne illnesses across several continents, including Asia, South America and Africa. ❚ Avoid tap water. This includes beverages with ice and swallowing water while brushing your teeth or bathing. Drink only bottled water, and make sure the bottle has an intact seal before you open it.

❚ Skip street food. As hard as this may be, avoiding street food can help you avoid many potential risks, including vendors’ hands that may or may not be clean and microbes that may contaminate utensils and surfaces used to prepare and cook food.

❚ Take preventive Pepto-Bismol. The over-the-counter medication can help reduce the risk of foodborne illness. When you arrive at your destination, before your first meal, repeat before every subsequent meal and at bedtimes. However, always consult your primary care physician before taking medication to assess potential side effects. ❚ Wash hands often. Before eating, wash your hands thoroughly using soap and water, or hand sanitizer if none is available.

❚ Eat hot meals. High temperatures help kill bacteria and other organisms that cause illnesses; however, refrigeration does not. Avoid cold or room temperatures foods when eating out.

If you experience symptoms of food poisoning, such as diarrhea or vomiting, drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. See your doctor or go to the emergency room if you have severe symptoms, including high fever (over 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit), blood in stool, and diarrhea lasting more than three days.

Your Guide to

ACING A BUSINESS LUNCH

BUSINESS LUNCHES can be a great alternative to stuffy board rooms or

impersonal conference calls, especially in terms of adding a personal touch to a potential professional relationship. Whether you’re interviewing for a position or trying to attract new clients, there are certain protocols that should always be followed. Just because there’s food involved shouldn’t change how you treat the process! A lunch interview should be treated just like any other interview. Give yourself time to prepare accordingly – make sure you have the correct address and know where you’re going. Allow extra time to compensate for traffic. Make sure you give yourself an extra ten to fifteen minutes in order to make sure you can use the bathroom prior to your lunch appointment. If you arrive before your dining companion, feel free to wait by the host stand or at the table. If you’re offered a drink prior to their arrival, start with water or a soft drink – grabbing a glass of wine or a beer may settle your nerves, yet it could also deliver the wrong first impression. Once your companion arrives, they may very well order themselves a cocktail and encourage you to do the same. Keep in mind that you have the right to decline – (have you ever met anyone whose

demeanor has been improved by alcohol?) however, if you do choose to drink, know your limits! Keep it to one and make it last throughout the meal. When it comes to the conversation, some interviewers are all business right away and prefer to dive right in, yet others are more laid back and appreciate some basic small talk. Regardless, it’s important to stay focused on the opportunity that’s in front of you. While the person you’re dining with obviously wants to get to know you, they don’t need to hear about your newfound love of organic gardening, how you feel about processed/fried foods or the fact that you can’t have dairy. (Unless of course, this somehow relates to the position you’re interviewing for!)

reiterate that being engaged with your dining companion is crucial in making a good first impression. Good eye contact, sitting up straight and good table manners can only improve your chances of landing a position. Remember – you only get one chance to make a good first impression! When its time to choose your meal, keep in mind that this is not the time to branch out and try new foods! Stay away from anything too spicy or garlicky, and avoid wings, ribs and spaghetti – remember, you want to look the same at the end of the lunch as you did when you first sat down…. And eating anything that should require a bib is NOT the first impression you want to make. As the meal comes to a close, the person who set up the lunch should be responsible for paying. Don’t forget to thank them and follow up with a handwritten note – it can only improve your chances of success!

Obviously, this should already be understood, however, it’s important to

“Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right things.”

– Peter Drucker.

This quote kicks off Leadership Delaware County, session 1, hosted by the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Facilitator, Michele Martin, owner of The Bamboo Project, starts the course by laying the ground work for what’s to come in the next 8 sessions. She creates an interactive, welcoming platform for participants to share with Vegas Rules, “What happens here, stays here.” Michele is a certified Career Development Instructor with over 20 years of experience in career, leadership and workforce development. Leadership Delaware County started in 1989, every year getting its own reflection and review, has had a few name changes, but is now back to the name that most clearly explains the program – Leadership Delaware County. This program runs from September to June, through a series of interactive sessions and has over 375 distinguished alumni. Over the course of 9 months, participants expand beyond the management skills that make them effective at work in order to develop the leadership abilities that will help them inspire their teams, create innovation and opportunity in their organizations and the community. Sessions vary from networking insights to the importance of volunteerism and nonprofit engagement, learning from mistakes, teamwork and a DISC (Dominance – D, Influence – I, Steadiness – S, and Compliance – C) assessment to understand how you and your team are motivated. Each session hosts a panel discussion during lunch, with county business leaders who offer past experiences, lessons learned and are there for participants to pick their brains. Leadership Delaware County includes a trip to Harrisburg to learn leadership in government and tour the

State Capitol, as well as a volunteer opportunity at Comcast Cares Day in the local community, and tickets to a few signature Chamber events. Donna Marandola, director, Financial Services for the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, a leadership alum says, “I took away some great learnings and aha moments from (facilitator) Michele Martin,” she said. “I felt that every speaker we had connected with us in either a professional capacity or a personal capacity.” The final session ends with ignite presentations by each participant. An ignite presentation is one that can be somewhat challenging, but has the slogan, “enlighten us, but make it quick.” The presentation is only 5 minutes, and contains exactly 20 slides. The slides advance automatically after each slide is displayed for 15 seconds. With fixed timing and clear constraints, the Ignite style is suitable for any presentation situation, getting right to the point and keeping spectators engaged. Past alum, Lindsey Isler, a DELCORA project specialist said, “I thought it was going to be more book-and-class like…I

thought we were going to sit there and be told, ‘This is how things are.’ It was a bit more conversational. You really got to hear different ideas…What it meant for me was it was a nice, diverse group and the best thing was we had all different ages with different knowledge and different experience levels.” The program starts with roughly 25 people at very different stages of their careers, fairly unfamiliar with each other and ends 9 months later with 25 friends, who are able to motivate, assess, reflect and understand, not only their own work environment, but most importantly themselves. Participants graduate at the Chamber’s Annual Membership Luncheon in June. ––––––––––––––– Tuition starts at $1,200. Get your application for Leadership Delaware County – Class of 2019 at www.delcochamber.org/ foundation. Scholarships are available, as well as, sponsorship opportunities. Application deadline is Wednesday, August 15. “Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” – John Maxwell

DELICIOUS DELCO

MUSHROOM HEMP TARTLETS

Recipe by Martindale’s Natural Market

Serve these delicious tartlets as appetizers at your next dinner or family celebration. Packed with essential fatty acids and highly digestible protein, hemp is rich in minerals, gluten-free and has no known allergens. Hemp has a fascinating history that dates back to colonial times. For example: During the 1700s, American farmers were required by law to grow hemp in Virginia and other colonies; the Declaration of Independence, signed in 1776, was drafted on hemp paper; in 1797, the U.S.S. Constitution was outfitted with 60 tons of hemp sails and rigging. Read more about this amazing fiber and seed oil crop.

INGREDIENTS 16 oz. of organic white button mushrooms 2 tsp. olive oil 1 tbsp. rosemary, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk 4 oz. of goat cheese 1/2 cup Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts 1/4-cup parsley, chopped 1 package of Gee Free Puff Pastry Sheets

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Heat the oven to 400°F. 2. Add all of the mushrooms except about 6 to a food processor and pulse until they are chopped into fine pieces. 3. Add the olive oil, chopped mushrooms, rosemary and garlic to a pan over medium heat and sauté until the mushrooms are browned. Stir in the flour until the mixture is well coated and then add the almond milk, goat cheese and Hemp Hearts. Cook over low heat until the mixture thickens. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the parsley. Cut the remaining mushrooms into thin slices and in a separate pan, sauté them with olive oil until they are cooked.

4. Defrost Gee Free Puff Pastry Sheets, shape into tartlets and bake according to package instructions. Once they are done and have cooled slightly, add about 2 tbsp. of the mushroom mixture to each shell. You want them to be filled to the top. 5. Add two thin slices of the cooked mushroom to the top of each tartlet and sprinkle with extra Hemp Hearts. Serve immediately.
