Leadership is doing the right things.”– Peter Drucker This quote kicks off Leadership Delaware County, session 1, hosted by The Foundation of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. Facilitator, Michele Martin, owner of The Bamboo Project, starts the course laying the ground work for what’s to come in the next 8 sessions and creates an interactive, welcoming platform for participants to share with Vegas Rules, “What happens here, stays here.” Michele is a certified Career Development Instructor with over 20 years of experience in career, leadership and workforce development. Leadership Delaware County started in 1989 and every year getting its own reflection and review, has had a few name changes, but is now back to the name that most blatantly explains the program – Leadership Delaware County. This program runs from September to June, through a series of interactive sessions, and has over 350 distinguished alumni. Over the course of nine months, participants expand beyond the management skills that make them effective
at work to develop the leadership abilities that will help them inspire their teams, create innovation and opportunity in their organizations and the community. Sessions vary from networking insights to the importance of volunteerism and non-profit engagement, learning from mistakes, teamwork and a DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance) assessment to understand how you and your team are motivated. Each session hosts a panel discussion during lunch, with county business leaders who offer past experiences, share lessons learned, and allow participants to pick their brains. Leadership Delaware County includes a trip to Harrisburg to learn leadership in government and tour of the State capitol, as well as a volunteer opportunity at Comcast Cares Day in the local community,

Past alum, Lindsey Isler, a DELCORA project specialist said, “I thought it was going to be more book-and-class like… I thought we were going to sit there and be told, ‘This is how things are.’ It was a bit more conversational. You really got to hear different ideas … What it meant for me was it was a nice, diverse group and the best thing was we had all different ages with different knowledge and different experience levels.” What starts with roughly 25 people at very different stages of their careers, fairly unfamiliar with each other, ends nine
Class of 2016 and tickets to a few signature Chamber events. Donna Marandola, Director, Financial Services for the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies and a leadership alum said, “I took away some great learnings and A-ha moments from (facilitator) Michele Martin. I felt that every speaker we had connected with us in either a professional capacity or a personal capacity.” The final session ends with Ignite presentations by each participant. An Ignite presentation is one that can be somewhat challenging, but has the slogan, “enlighten us, but make it quick.” The presentation is only five minutes, and contains exactly 20 slides. The slides advance automatically after each slide is displayed for 15 seconds. With fixed timing and clear constraints, the Ignite style is suitable for any presentation situation, getting right to the point and keeping spectators engaged.

SBA OFFERS FREE BUSINESS EDUCATION For Small Business Owners By Jennifer L. Tilden, Lead Business Opportunity Specialist, U.S. Small Business Administration
The SBA’s mission is three-fold: Counselling, Contracting, and Capital. While we are probably most famous for capital – guaranteeing loans made by banks to small businesses – we also offer training and support for businesses wanting to enter the Federal marketplace (contracting). Perhaps most importantly, however, is counselling: the free and low-cost business education we offer to new and growing small businesses, which is primarily provided through three important resource partners I will introduce here: SCORE, Women’s Business Centers, and Small Business Development Centers. SCORE is a group of former and current business owners who have “been there, done that,” failed, succeeded, learned, and now want to “pay it forward” to other business owners. SCORE provides

classes on topics of interest to small business owner-operators like “Social Media” or “QuickBooks Accounting.” But most importantly, SCORE can be a sounding board, a supportive network of other people who truly understand where you are, what you’re going through, and aren’t family or friends. Sometimes, especially if you’re confronted with the problems of a new or growing business, a sounding board is the best thing there is. You can connect with SCORE at www.score.org. Women’s Business Centers (WBC), including the Women’s Business Development Center on Walnut Street in Philadelphia, obviously focus on providing assistance to women in business, but will certainly help business owners of any gender. You can help with certifying your small business as woman-owned for federal contracting, networking with other business owners, or receive mentoring, counselling and coaching. You can find a WBC to connect with at: www.sba.gov/women. Finally, and possibly most importantly, are our Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs). Funded in part through the universities they are co-located with across Pennsylvania, SBDCs offer myriad services to small business owners at low or no cost. Each SBDC has specialty services based on their particular location and university – the SBDC at Temple University, for example, offers low-cost legal services through their law school clinic. SBDCs offer a vibrant class schedule, and one of the largest management and technical assistance networks in the nation. There are 18 SBDCs across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Some SBDCs even have Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs); professionals who can help a small business navigate the warren of federal contracting through a grant from the Department of Defense. In 2015, they assisted an average of 32 new business starts every single day. Delaware County has its own SBDC, located at Widener University: www.widenersbdc.org. Your local District Office is located in King of Prussia, and can be found online at www.sba.gov/pa. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we offer online learning through our website at www.sba.gov, where you can find more information on everything from financing a small business to selling to the federal government. The SBA is here to help you start, grow, and succeed in your dream.

Governor Wolf Releases Innovative Budget Plan By Alex Rahn, Warner Associates
GOVERNOR TOM WOLF DELIVERED HIS 2017-2018 FISCAL BUDGET to the General Assembly during the first week of February. This ambitious budget seeks to save $2 billion in taxpayer money by merging departments together, modernizing the workforce, and offering new, early retirement programs.
Also, the Chamber is excited to see the proposal does not include any broad-based taxes, such as a personal income tax increase of expansion of sales tax. However, the Chamber will continue to analyze and monitor some of the proposed new taxes to see how it impacts our members. This includes the Governor’s plan for a 6.5 percent severance tax on natural gas extracts, changes to Corporate Net Income (CNI) Tax rate, expansion of the insurance premiums tax to most previously exempt insurance entities, and elimination of exemptions in the sales and use tax for specialty software and computer services, prepared food sold to airlines, aircraft maintenance and repair, and business storage. In addition, as reported by PA Legislative Services, Gov. Wolf is proposing to lower all available tax credits by $100 million by combining them into a block grant “to focus these initiatives on those credits that have demonstrated the greatest return in new business investment, education access, and community development.” As the budget process unfolds, the Chamber of Commerce is committed to continued work with the Governor and our Legislative Delegation to support pro-business policies which will go a long way toward making our area and state a better place to live, work, and raise a family.

EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY on Managing Chronic Diseases Education plays an important role in the health of a community. To support a population’s health, community hospitals offer access to multiple healthcare programs that focus on education for disease management. For Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital, caring for the community means much more than treating the patients who come through the door. It’s about providing an environment that supports the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of those who live, work, play and pray in Delaware County. Two initiatives at Mercy Fitzgerald help advance that mission: the Chronic Disease Management Committee and the Dine with the Docs program. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic diseases are responsible for seven in 10 deaths each year and account for 86 percent of our nation’s healthcare costs. To aid in the management of chronic diseases, the hospital provides several opportunities to build a healthier community for its neighbors. Physicians from Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital’s Chronic Disease Management Committee identify high-risk patients (who are often readmitted to the hospital) and make sure they receive the necessary resources to stay well. These resources may include home care services, transportation and access to pharmacies and medication. In addition, the Chronic Disease Management Committee ensures patients are educated about discharge instructions before and after

leaving the hospital. After a patient is discharged from the hospital, a nurse visits the patient’s home to review with them discharge instructions and educational materials. “It is important to stay in touch with our patients once they leave our direct care,” said Martin O’Riordan, MD, Medical Director of both the Cardiovascular Service Line and the Chronic Disease Management Committee. “By extending our relationship past their hospital visit, we can help patients address barriers to care and possibly prevent exacerbations of their disease.” Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital also provides members of the community resources to help them understand and better manage health conditions. The “Dine with a Doc” program invites community members to a free, light dinner at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital featuring a brief talk and a Q-and-A session with a healthcare professional on various topics. Future “Dine with a Doc” programs will discuss congestive heart failure, bariatrics and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Offered one to two times a month, the programs give attendees vital information and increased confidence in their ability to manage their health. Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital’s proactive community initiatives reflect one of its core values – commitment to those in need. The Chronic Disease Management Committee and the Dine with the Doc programs are two examples of how Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital carries out its mission and remains faithful to those who are most vulnerable. DELICIOUS DELCO
QUINOA GRANOLA FOR STUDENTS Recipe by Karen Shaw, Sales Associate at Martindale’s Natural Market
Use this classic dish to show family hospitality to a group of hungry students with a modern twist: use quinoa flakes (pronounced “keen-wa”) instead of oats. Quinoa is an amazingly nutritious, gluten free grain with very high quality plant protein. The flakes are simply the grains of quinoa flattened out into a flake, similar to rolled oats. They are high in fiber, B-vitamins, and iron, while being low calorie and low fat.
INGREDIENTS 4 cups quinoa flakes 2 cups total of your favorite flavorful nubbins such as: hemp seeds almonds coconut flakes chia seeds sunflower seeds dried cranberries dried cherries flax seeds 1 cup olive oil (healthy fat) 1 cup honey 1 T. cinnamon (helps reduce sugar cravings) Line large baking sheet with parchment and grease it. Mix all ingredients in bowl and pack smooth onto sheet. Bake at preheated 275° for about 20 to 30 minutes or until golden. Check often, then cool when done. Break up and store in tightly sealed container until the students arrive. Serve with natural yogurt. What – no students? Just eat it yourself!
