FOUR SEASONS IN HUNTERDON COUNTY

s Hunterdon awakes from the long winter cold, new life brings hints of green along with the warmer weather. It’s tee time at Hunterdon’s public links, which are just a short, scenic drive from more populated areas of the region. The roster of country golf escapes includes Heron Glen by the rolling hills of Ringoes and Stanton Ridge Golf and Country Club, where breathtaking views are never far away. And if it’s spring, it’s time for baseball, fishing, biking and other lively pursuits. Hunterdon is an angler’s delight along the banks of the South Branch of the Raritan River as well as at Round Valley Reservoir, Spruce Run Recreation Area, Hoffman and Deer Path parks, and Ken Lockwood Gorge, which is often ranked among the top 10 most beautiful locations in the state. The entire county, meanwhile, along with thousands of out-oftowners, celebrate shad migration at Lambertville’s Shad Festival in late April, with a weekend art show, crafters, music, food and family entertainment
want to take their game to the next level. For bicycling aficionados, Hunterdon is filled with choices, including the 15-mile Columbia Trail, which starts in High Bridge and goes to Long Valley, with a turnaround in Califon for anyone who wants a shorter ride. Moving indoors, there are many opportunities for antiquing and the arts. Flemington and Lambertville are two key spots for antique lovers, while the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, ArtYard in Frenchtown and Prallsville Mills in Stockton offer a wide variety of exhibits for art lovers.

unterdon is bursting with fun things to do, from free outdoor concerts to a variety of festivals and day trips for enjoying with family and friends. Every year, the July Festival of Ballooning attracts thousands, with its impressive array of hot air balloons, musical entertainment and family amusements. The Corn, Tomato and Beer Festival is another major draw, where the freshest summer foods delight the crowds, along with plenty of music and kid-friendly activities. On a somewhat smaller scale—but just as revered—are the festivals and musical events sprinkled throughout Hunterdon in summer. The tourist-friendly towns of Frenchtown, Clinton, Lambertville, Flemington, High Bridge, Milford and Stockton are not only great for shopping, they’re also the sites of outdoor art exhibits, car shows, music and fireworks. Meanwhile, at the free “Music Under the Stars” concerts in Deer Path Park, sponsored by Hunterdon’s Division of Parks and Recreation, the talent lights up the sky while visitors bring chairs, food and frisbees and children frolic in the fields. Hunterdon has many options for day trips, including Northlandz, a model train lover’s delight, and the Black River & Western Railroad, where visitors can experience the real thing on authentic steampowered locomotives. The annual Hunterdon County Community Day in June and Hunterdon HUNTERDONCHAMBER.ORG
County Fair in August, both in South County Park, offer two more opportunities for family fun, with lots of food, music and games. For wine enthusiasts, outdoor concerts are an added bonus to tastings and tours, notably at Beneduce Vineyards in Pittstown and Old York Cellars in Ringoes. Hunterdon is also home to numerous historic landmarks, many of which are in Flemington, which offers a self-guided walking tour. Also on the roster are the Red Mill in Clinton; Readington Museums; the Township of Lebanon Museum’s one-room schoolhouse; Prallsville Mills in Stockton; Solitude House in High Bridge, and the HolcombeJimison Farm in Lambertville, which pays homage to the county’s rich agricultural heritage. 5
Fall S
eptember kicks off the fall season with a feast of lively events, including the Central Jersey Jazz Festival in Flemington, sponsored by Flemington Community Partnership, and the Milford Alive Festival, where a zany bed race takes over the streets en route to the Delaware River. The following month, beer drinking—and all things German—highlight the festivities at Flemington’s Oktoberfest. As for leaf peeping, autumn brings vivid hues to Hunterdon’s rolling hills, including the Sourland Mountains, Point Mountain and Cushetunk Mountain, not to mention the county’s many parks, where hiking is a glorious adventure. Cruising into Halloween, the ghouls are alive and well at Frenchtown’s Zombie Night and Lambertville’s annual parade. Clinton’s Haunted Red Mill steps up the fright a notch, when spine-tingly creatures are virtually coming out of the walls to jolt even the most stoic visitors. As Thanksgiving rolls around, Black Friday takes a decidedly historic twist at Dickens’ Days in Clinton, sponsored by The Clinton Guild, where strolling minstrels and horse-drawn carriages liven

up the town with an energy that’s sure to ward off the winter blues. And what outing would be complete without a stop at one of Hunterdon’s “agri-tourism” farms for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes—hours of family entertainment for a crisp fall day? Profeta Farms in Readington offers free weekly tours while nearby Readington River Buffalo Farm adds another dimension to the joys of farm animal gazing. For those who want to channel their inner artist, there’s always the annual pumpkin painting day at Fleming House Museum and Gardens in Flemington, where people of all ages can create personalized mementos of the season while enjoying the fresh autumn air.

Winter F
rom the northern lights at Point Mountain to the glittering streets of Lambertville, Hunterdon is ablaze with celebrations to mark the joys of the season. Now is the time to pick up some fresh greenery at one of the county’s many Christmas tree farms before catching a holiday parade in Flemington and Clinton, or a tree lighting in Frenchtown, where Santa arrives by boat. For more intense revelry, there’s the annual Lambertville-New Hope Winter Festival, a 9-day event that includes ice sculptures, an oldies dance night, a chili cookoff, historic tours and a concert. Speaking of music, what holiday season would be complete without a performance of “The Nutcracker” by the Roxey Ballet? Music Mountain Theatre in Lambertville also has a full slate of shows, including many for the kiddies. The younger set even has its own train – the North Pole Express – on the Black River & Western Railroad from Flemington to Ringoes, where visitors can meet Santa and take photos on his sleigh

while munching on chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa. Flemington Ice Arena offers yet another lively adventure, where visitors can lace up their skates and whirl around the rink as often as they want. To warm up after that, many restaurants in Hunterdon offer cozy fireplace seating, including the historic Sergeantsville Inn, which was once an ice cream parlor, a grain store and a pelt trading center, among other things. As Valentine’s Day rolls in, a day at a local spa is always a great gift. And before anyone can say “hot stone massage” or “mini-facial,” spring is on the way.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT The Hunterdon Art Museum, as well as historic museums such as the Holcombe-Jimison Farm near Lambertville and Prallsville Mill near Stockton, are scattered throughout the county, giving history buffs days of exploration, while fine art galleries provide art collectors choices from some of the finest artists in the country.
