MILLS & KILNS of Days Gone By
If Hunterdon County is synonymous with one image, it has to be the Red Mill in Clinton. Gracing calendars, phone book covers and various other mediums, the beautiful and stately Red Mill is iconic - and for good reason. Hunterdon County is home to over 40 mills. The tale of the evolution of the Red Mill is a history lesson in and of itself.
According to Paul Muir, Executive Director of the Red Mill Museum, the historic building’s story began in 1810 when the Mill was used for wool processing. Once protective tariffs were dropped, foreign cloth was brought to the marketplace, which edged out the Mill’s wool production.
Subsequent owners utilized the Mill as a grist mill for area farms for a time, followed by graphite processing, until new tariffs and public outcry over the black dust the graphite generated ended that chapter of the mill’s history.
From the mid to late 1800’s, the Mill was the original water pumping facility for the Clinton Water Authority. Interestingly, in 1892, the Mill powered the first electric streetlights in Clinton. Muir explained how all the streetlights exploded the first night of use because the operators were still learning how to control the electric current.
The years 1901-1928 were the last years of operation for the mill. It was left dormant for a time, and eventually became a museum in 1963. A symbol of the foundation of economic stability for the town of Clinton, the Red Mill Museum is the core of heritage and tourism, hosting 20,000 visitors annually. “The Mill itself is our greatest asset, in its beauty and the rich history of stories behind it,” said Muir.
Another iconic industrial facility in Hunterdon County is Mulligan Quarry. This Quarry harvested and processed limestone - the bedrock for many roads and railroad beds in New Jersey – and would also cook the limestone in kilns to make lime for fertilizer.
Irish immigrants founded the quarry in 1848, hoping to make a new life in a new land. The quarry operated until 1960, when it was sold to the Red Mill Museum Village. Over the course of ten years, the quarry was integrated with the museum. Today, visitors can visit the original Mulligan Quarry office, the dynamite shed, the screen house (a rock crusher with a conveyor system to sort stone), the fully functional blacksmith shop, a tenant house, and the original lime kilns.
For more information on the history of the Red Mill, Mulligan Quarry, and other Hunterdon County treasures, visit TheRedMill.org.
FUN FACT: The Red Mill Museum’s water wheel was replaced in 2020 with support from Custom Alloy in a nod to the industrial history of the Mill. The engineer assigned to the project fondly remembered coming to the Red Mill Museum as part of a school trip, many years ago.
Cheers to the NEXT GREAT
FAMILY DAY TRIP!
You probably know someone who has taken part in a winery excursion, but did you know that within the state of New Jersey, there are SIX different wine regions? In fact, within Hunterdon County alone, there are FIVE wineries? That’s a lot of vino!
Tom Cosentino, Executive Director of the Garden Statewide Growers Association, is the spokesman for the wine industry in New Jersey. He works closely with the Department of Agriculture, the Division of Travel and Tourism and many other organizations to get the word out about all things wine and winemaking.
A big fan of the winery and vineyard experience, Cosentino notes the interplay of history, explaining, “Here in New Jersey, you can have wines made from native American grapes that have been growing here for centuries or see the viniferous style grapes that are made famous in Europe - each stop along the way is a different experience, and to actually see the vineyard where the wine you’re drinking came from is a beautiful experience.” He added, “Our “Garden State” is very diverse and so are the palates of our drinkers – New Jersey wineries and vineyards offer something for everyone.”
There’s much to discover about this niche hobby that is a passion for many, but still an untapped treasure for some. David Wolin, owner and founder of Old York Cellars Vineyard and Winery explained it well when he said, “A visit to a winery is a unique, outdoor experience that’s both fun and safeit’s a way for you to experience new things, even if you’re not a wine lover.”
Old York Cellars is a 28-acre farm in Ringoes that opened in 2010. It features ten acres of grapes, a tasting room, gift shop, and a hospitality area with a terrace and large tents. Sixteen full-time and 40 to 50 part-time employees keep this winery hopping as they host some small weddings and private events in addition to their daily
tours and wine tastings. Local and regional musicians perform on the weekends and guests of all ages are invited to stroll the vineyards.
“Come out and try our wine and food pairings – if you’re not experienced, we’ll walk you through and find something that you enjoy,” said Wolin. Example of their pairings include wine and tappas; wine and chocolate (in cooperation with The Fudge Shoppe in Flemington); a six-course dinner pairing; and a chocolate, cheese, and charcuterie pairing. Non-alcoholic beverage options are also available.
“We’re family and pet friendly,” said Wolin. “While we do have the food pairing options, guests are welcome to bring their own picnics if they’d like, and they can reserve rows in the vineyard for families or 6-8 person cabanas.”
The Old York Cellars vineyards overlook the Sour Land Mountains which, Wolin says, “make guests feel as though they’re in Napa or the European wine region.” Regardless of the season, there’s always something going on, whether it be pruning, harvesting, winemaking, or bottling, for an up-close look, visit a vineyard.
Old York Cellars is also home to a 1,700-member Vintner Club, now in its sixth year. The Club hosts regular activities for members throughout the year. For more information, visit: oldyorkcellars.com
Just a short drive away in Pittstown is Beneduce Vineyards and winery, a 77-acre farm that began planting vineyards in 2009 and opened to the public in 2012. The vineyard has a 12,000 sq. ft. barn that serves as the production facility and tasting room, and they currently have nine full-time employees and as many as forty part-time employees during the peak season. Mike Beneduce is co-owner and winemaker, although, like most farmers, he wears many hats, also serving as general manager and vineyard manager.
Beneduce Vineyards offers a selection of local cheeses and meats for sale in the tasting room, as well as charcuterie boards with their wine tastings and a rotating schedule of food trucks on site. Non-alcoholic beverage options are also available for purchase. Guests may venture indoors or outdoors, and live entertainment is frequently on the schedule.
“While our main priority is making high quality wines, we serve them in a down-to-earth atmosphere that lacks the unnecessary pretension that can sometimes be found in our industry,” explained Beneduce. “We focus on crafting small batch wines from estate grown grapes, meaning we’re only using fruit grown here on the farm.”
Beneduce agrees that a winery excursion is an experience well worth trying. “Wineries offer a great opportunity to enjoy some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in Hunterdon County. They can serve as meeting points for co-workers, friends, and family, and many, including ours, are child and dog friendly.”
Those interested in visiting Beneduce Vineyards are encouraged to check out their website in advance and plan to make a reservation, since the facility often reaches full capacity, particularly on the weekends. Reservations are required for the weekly “Group Therapy” and Sunday Picnic events. For complete information on their offering of activities and events, visit:
beneducevineyards.com
As more and more people check off “Visit a Vineyard and Winery” on their bucket lists, Cosentino encourages everyone to investigate a new, user-friendly app, “Passport to NJ Wine Country”. The app helps enhance the winery experience by presenting comprehensive information all in one place and assisting with organization of excursions – large or small. It features links to winery websites, lists of wineries by region, reservation and check-in functionality, itinerary building tools, directions, lodging information, space for excursion notes, and more. For additional information, visit: newjerseywines.com
According to Cosentino, New Jersey currently boasts 53 wineries, with some waiting for final licensing that will soon put the total number of NJ wineries to 60. With those numbers, winery excursions will be beckoning many to join the fun.
“Get out and explore!” urged Cosentino. “There’s so much to see, and you really can explore New Jersey’s wine country all year long.”
“Wineries offer a great opportunity to enjoy some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in Hunterdon County.”

FINE DINING
THE HISTORIC ROAD TO FINE DINING
Arguably, one of the best things about Hunterdon County is its roster of fine dining establishments. Adding to the charm of this bounty is the fact that many of the restaurants have a rich history, chock full of interesting back stories. Take the historic Clinton House, for example. The original structure dates back to 1743, with the inn component added circa 1808/1810.
According to current owner Nick Gialias, The Clinton House began as part of a series of historic inns that served as meeting points during colonial times for travelers along the path from New York City to Philadelphia. The inns were strategically located a day’s ride by horseback apart and consisted of a tavern that served food, with rooms above and a horse stable.
“Hunterdon County is both interesting and historic,” said Gialias. “All the small towns are beautiful - from Clinton, to the river towns of Frenchtown and Lambertville.”
“There’s a powerful connection to the history of this area –you’re transported back in time and that’s special,” explained Gialias. “Hunterdon County towns are often very soulful places, rich in history and tradition – the people who live here chose to be here for those reasons – they didn’t end up here by accident.”
The Gialias family, restauranteurs for two generations, bought The Clinton House in 1995. They were the third family to own The Clinton House in the last 100 years. Known for its seafood and meats – prime rib is a staple of The Clinton House. Nick’s father is a trained chef, with a background in meat and seafood.
A certified sommelier, Nick took the reins from his father in 2019, and brought a world class wine list with him. In fact, The Clinton House won Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
“I’ve put together a wine list that complements our American steakhouse menu – including New World wines (largely California, Oregon, the Finger Lakes, and New Mexico), as well as wines from South America, Australia and New Zealand,” explained Gialias.
In addition to standard dining, The Clinton House hosts small parties, baptisms, small weddings, funerals, corporate meetings, wine tastings and wine dinners. To learn more, visit TheClintonHouse.com

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP
Franklin Township lies smack in the heart of Hunterdon. Established in 1845 as an agricultural community, it was settled in earlier decades of the 18th century by Quakers moving north from the Trenton area. Quakertown has one of the state’s few remaining Friends Meeting Houses built of stone. Franklin’s agricultural heritage is encouraged by ongoing farmland preservation, which now protects 2,082 acres and by protective right-to-farm ordinances. Seventy percent of Franklin is under farmland assessment, and it is home to Snyder Farm, the Rutgers’ Research Farm located on 377 acres donated by Township residents. Multiple hiking trails running along the south branch of the Raritan River and the Capoolong Creek provide beautiful outdoor recreation options.

With fine old houses tucked among its hills and valleys, the township offers beautiful scenery, sizable lots, and plenty of outdoor recreation options.
