San Pedro is blessed with sunshine, ocean breezes and comfortable temperatures. If you are beach-bound, check your favorite weather app for surf and sailing advisories. It’s easy to explore our rocky cliffs and follow seaside trails by foot or car. We have included some of our favorite spots to explore for history, public art, and natural beauty. LOS ANGELES HARBOR LIGHT - ANGELS GATE

Point Fermin Lighthouse Point Fermin Park

At the tip of a 2-mile long breakwater, the 73-foot Angels Gate San Pedro’s lighthouse welcomes local sailors and global container ships. The best ways to see this steel-framed and cast iron decorated tower are by the telescope turnout on South Gaffey Street near 36th Street, and from the Cabrillo Beach pier. It’s been called the Los Angeles Harbor Light since 1914, but locals refer to it as “Angels Gate.” Both Point Fermin Park (sea cliff side) and Angels Gate Park (hilltop) offer spectacular cliffside views of Catalina Island, worldbound cruise and container ships, and SoCal yachters. Bring your picnic lunch and a basketball for a pick-up game near the Korean Bell of Friendship.

This landmark and historic lighthouse was built 1874 in keeping with early Victorian Stick Style. It is the oldest navigational light on the West Coast. Its first lighthouse keepers were sisters: May and Ella Smith. Walkways give classic seaside vistas, and picnickers are welcome to sit under some enormous Moreton Bay Figs and palm trees. Free afternoon concerts on Sundays in July.

Fort MacArthur was active between 1914 and 1974. Now this US Army Coastal Defense location has been Hollywood’s go-to film location for more than 75 years (Including Tora! Tora! Tora!). It remains so, with a fleet of vintage military vehicles, and well-preserved coastal defense structures. The Battery Osgood-Farley, on the National Register of Historic Places, is considered the best-preserved example of a United States coastal defense gun emplacement. It was named after Lt. General Arthur MacArthur, whose son Douglas MacArthur commanded American forces in the Pacific during World War II. There’s much more here, including a K-9 service animal cemetery.

Korean Bell of Friendship at Angels Gate Park

Presented in 1976 by the Republic of Korea for the Bicentennial Jubilee of American Independence, this symbol of enduring friendship between the people of the United States and the people of the Republic of Korea stands for peace, freedom, justice and unity. The six-ton ceremonial bell is struck on the 1st Saturday of the month at noon and on five holidays: New Year’s Day at midnight, Korean American Day (January 13th), Independence Day (Hosted by the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce), Korean Liberation Day (August 15th) and Constitution Day (September 17th). continued page 10

San Pedro Fisherman’s Memorial Sculpture and Tile Wall

Commemorating the once-dominant industry role of those who built San Pedro’s fishing and cannery industries. Look closely at the surrounding tile wall for a delightful ode to San Pedro’s StarKist tuna brand’s cartoon mascot “Charlie Tuna.”

On select days it is possible to visit behind Station #112 to see the Old Fire Boat No 2, the Ralph J. Scott, which launched in 1925. The Ralph J. Scott fireboat served until 2003, longer than any other LAFD apparatus.

The Los Angeles Fire Department Harbor Museum is housed in Old Fire Station 36, one of the oldest buildings still standing in San Pedro, which is also City Hall. The museum features LAFD trucks and firefighting tools, including port fire and SCUBA equipment. Across the street is an active fireboat at Fire Station #112. This is one of two Los Angeles Fire Department museums; the other is in Hollywood.

This is a hospital for ill, injured and orphaned California sea lions, northern elephant seals, harbor seals and northern fur seals. Mammals on the mend, in contained, outdoor pools, are visible to the public as they play, rest, and gobble up healthy seafood meals. Educational staff and volunteers greet visitors to explain types of seals or sea lions and how they got there. Rehabilitated mammals are released to shores along San Pedro. The annual patient count has ranged from 709 in 2015 to 272 in 2018. Open daily during daylight hours.

San Pedro honors its military, fishing, and labor union history with a promenade designed with beautiful memorials, from ship parts as art, to sculpture, art tiles and monuments. Enjoy the fountains and exercise stations on this roughly 1-mile walk from the cruise terminal to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.

Architect Frank Gehry designed this research and public education facility. Live sharks, eels and octopuses are among the residents on display. Highlights of the aquarium include the Aquatic Nursery and Tide-Pool Touch Tank. The Gift Shop offers many treasures for gifts and personal treasure. Murals by renowned artist John Van Hammersveld grace the walls of the gift shop, along with a restored piece of neon art by Candice Gawne, 10

This Mediterranean-style building was built in 1932 for that year’s boating events for the Olympic Games. It was declared an historic landmark in 1989 as one of the last bathhouses built in Southern California and renovated in 2002. Now it’s an annual gathering spot for the San Pedro Polar Bears Club New Year’s Day swim and a popular recreation center.

Here’s where fishing is free! This 1,200-foot concrete structure was built in 1969 and renovated in 1988.

Cabrillo Outer Beach

This slim beach, braced with enormous rocks, is all about the ocean view. See ships headed in and out of the harbor, and windsurfers suiting up for an expert-level experience. Strong westerly winds inspired its name: “Hurricane Gulch,” It’s also a good place to meditate—or dig in the sand. continued page 12

Here’s where the annual Polar Bear plunge happens on New Year’s Day, where grunion wash ashore to mate and hatch anew under new and full moons, fishing types cast a line from the public pier, and contained bonfires are still allowed.

Extend your Harbor Promenade past 22nd Street with a bike ride to the S.S. Lane Victory. This is one of only 5 Victory Ships still afloat of 531 that once carried supplies across the Pacific Ocean from World War II to the Vietnam War. It was built by the California Shipbuilding Corp. of Wilmington and launched in 1945. In 1950, the S.S. Lane Victory evacuated over 3,800 U.S. troops and 1,100 vehicles from Wonsan, North Korea. It returned to rescue 7,009 South Korean civilians from approaching Chinese troops.

WHITE POINT/ROYAL PALMS This area was separated from the Point Fermin/ Angels Gate area by a 2011 cliffside collapse, which took out a portion of Paseo Del Mar Road. You can still hike between Point Fermin and White Point, where the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy maintains hiking trails and a nature center. The sunrises and sunsets here are inspiring. The Nature Preserve hike includes exploring old military bunkers. It’s a sunny spot, so slather on sunscreen and don a hat! Tip: There are no food stands or restaurants in this immediate area, but there are a handful of popular lunch spots to stop for sandwiches on the way, including Chori-Man, 2309 S Alma, and The Corner Store, at 1118 W. 37th St., San Pedro, CA 90731.

Battleship IOWA Museum Battleship IOWA This is a must-see self-guided tour, located between the cruise ship terminals and the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, a crosswalk away from downtown shops and restaurants. A top-10 tourist destination for Los Angeles, The Battleship IOWA launched in 1942 and was in active service for more than 50 years. Since docking on the LA Waterfront in 2012, the IOWA keeps improving their exhibits and added an art gallery, as well as “Lost at Sea” exhibit, documenting Dr.Robert Ballard’s rescue adventures. For the thousands of former service members who visit each year, the IOWA is a place to feel welcome, to remember, and to heal. Plans are underway for a $19 million restoration and expansion program, called the Museum of the Surface Navy to be completed in 2030.

The Preserve is owned by the City of Los Angeles and managed by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Since 2001, the Conservancy has dramatically restored the site with help from hundreds of volunteers who planted rare native scrub and coastal grasses, and installed public trails with interpretive signage. The Nature Education Center is housed in a repurposed historic Cold War assembly building surrounded by a native plant demonstration garden. Exhibits in the Nature Education Center tell the story of White Point from the Pleistocene era to the present through interactive displays, interpretive exhibits and staff naturalists.

The San Pedro Post Office, built in 1935 as a Works Progress Administration effort under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is a work of art itself, with marble walls, carved wood, brass and tile decorations throughout. Dominating the wide span of the lobby is artist Fletcher Martin’s 1937 mural depiction of challenging mail delivery scenes worldwide and here at the Port of LA. In 2020 restaurants in Downtown San Pedro were able to add an outdoor dining experience to their unique culinary offerings. The San Pedro Business Improvement District, the entity spearheading this initiative, started this effort long before the pandemic hit, and was able to accelerate the program over the past year with the leadership and support of 15th District Councilmember Joe Buscaino. Outdoor dining kept San Pedro’s restaurants afloat financially during this health crisis. SAN PEDRO ARTS AND CULTURE

The San Pedro Arts & Cultural District’s peninsula geography lends a small-town atmosphere despite belonging to the nation’s second largest city. The historic core of downtown San Pedro has been renting to artists since the 1920’s replete with studios in storefronts and warehouses. Many commercial buildings also house studios, arts organizations, and work/live options in the district. A coalition of San Pedro cultural organizations joined together to win the state distinction, led by the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District, and including collaborating partners - the Office of Council District 15 Joe Buscaino, San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Angels Gate Cultural Center, and the Grand Vision Foundation. The Arts & Cultural District features colorful public art in the form of painted DOT boxes, at 25 locations near traffic signals. Large scale murals grace the stage house of the Warner Grand Theatre and in the walkway next to the historic venue. Two new painted storm drains at 6th and Harbor highlight the drain’s connection with the ocean. Numerous murals depict our commitment to public art throughout the district. CRAFTED at the Port of LA, a permanent weekend market with handmade apparel, home decor and food goods, houses a plethora of artists with space and marketing to sell their artwork at the Port of Los Angeles. The Angels Gate Cultural Center offers studios in former army barracks for more than 50 artists of all disciplines. Vacant spaces remain, open to new artists and organizations, providing more opportunities and promise to grow the district’s arts culture. These nontraditional spaces offer regular arts events, with monthly art openings and classes in settings all over the district. For 24 years, the community has participated in a 1st Thursday ArtWalk, one of the first in the region. Thousands of residents show up every First Thursday to celebrate the visual arts, socialize, and patronize participating restaurants.

The Arts District’s programs celebrate the diversity of our neighbors and inspire deep appreciation of the many cultural and artistic influences found in San Pedro. San Pedro’s arts community has been a naturally occurring haven for the arts since the 1920s and has been an arts destination as other areas become unaffordable. The San Waterfront Arts District promotes the dozens of San Pedro art galleries, artists and performing art spaces, as well as collaborating with them to manage the 1st Thursday ArtWalk. The Arts District specializes in public art, a visual expression of our cultural heritage, in existence since antiquity. Some of the earliest forms in Roman and Renaissance times were stonework or statues commemorating Emperors, royalty, or mythical characters as God-like figures looking down on the public from on high. Creating and displaying public art, creates an indelible sense of place, giving residents and visitors a chance to enjoy memorable art in an outdoor setting.

During the 20th and 21st century the scope of public art widened dramatically. Greater political purpose was invested into public art projects, as seen in the idealistic propaganda art of Soviet Socialist Realism, nationalist Mexican murals, and Chinese art around the Cultural Revolution. One of the most prominent and contentious sites for impromptu public art was the Berlin Wall, part of which still exists as an open-air site known as the East Side Gallery preserved by the Berlin Wall Foundation. On view throughout the Arts District are 25 artist-painted traffic signal boxes, numerous large-scale murals (like the one on the parking lot side of Sirens) and two new painted storm drains at the foot of 6th and Harbor Boulevard. San Pedro’s 22nd Street park opened in 2010 with approximately 18 acres of grassy fields, open meadows and ample parking. This park offers marina views along trails with way-finding signage to other waterfront locations, bike paths, two bocce ball courts, benches, lighting, and restrooms. Walking the park’s perimeter is about 1 mile. A staircase leads up to a bike path. A variety of birds can be seen and heard.

This 64-acre complex with sweeping coastal views and grassy fields is the coastal highpoint of San Pedro. You will recognize the basketball courts from many Hollywood movies. An extensive $7.1 million restoration completed in 2017 brought this public pool with ocean views back to life, with a nod to its World War II history. Once the Gaffey Street Pool, “ Hey Rookie “ refers to a play written and produced by soldiers stationed at Fort MacArthur. Their production raised $250,000 that was used to build the pool for its original opening in 1943.

The Averill Park gazebo sets a spectacular background for weddings and its pathways delight photographers. A gentle waterfall rambles downstream and under a wooden bridge to a peaceful pond that is home to wild ducks, swans and geese. The park also features barbecue pits and picnic tables.

Bandini Canyon Park

San Pedro, One end is adjacent to Bandini Elementary School, the tot lot end is at Marshall Court. The trail includes seating areas, lighting, and security fencing. It’s near the recently dedicated San Pedro Welcome Park (at 415 N. Gaffey Street).

The Cabrillo Beach Park

Cabrillo Beach has two beaches – one outside the breakwater with ocean surf, and the other within the harbor, a protected bay perfect for families with children. The Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse Recreation Center, a fishing pier, tide pools, picnic tables and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium are all within barefoot-walking distance. As whale-watching season draws to an end, grunion season begins. Twice a month, from March through August, these silvery fish emerge from the water at Cabrillo Beach to lay their eggs in the sand under a full or new moon.

You’ll find four lighted public tennis courts, a lighted football and soccer field, batting cages, a golf cage, basketball court and picnic area. It’s where Mary Star of the Sea High School played football between 1954 and 2017. The San Pedro High School Pirates also played football there until 2000.

Here’s where to sign up for baseball, volleyball, basketball and flag football teams for youth and adults. The center also offers preschool and pre-K classes. The Bogdanovich Recreation Center was remodeled in 2006. Fishing History: Martin Bogdanovich was born in Croatia in 1882, emigrated to the United States in 1908, and started a sardine fishing business with three partners on Terminal Island in 1910. In the 1940s the French Sardine Company shifted to canning tuna. That tuna became Star-Kist.

This is the home for Girls Play LA (ages 8-15) program, L.A. Kids Classes, a day camp, indoor recreation facilities and lighted outdoor basketball, volleyball, and baseball courts and fields. Peck Park and Recreation Center

This annual holiday weekend tradition is not your ordinary Nutcracker performance. Since 1994, more than 5,000 people have attended over three performance days. In a series of big, bold investments in San Pedro, West Harbor may be the biggest, boldest, yet. Construction is set to start in 2020 for a $150 million redevelopment of 42-acres facing the LA Harbor Waterfront between our historic downtown and the Cabrillo Way Marina. The project has a world-class feel with local commitment: San Pedro’s Jericho Development has partnered with Southern California developer, The Ratkovich Company, in a multi-year, community-engaged design effort. The plan is to build an all-new waterfront entertainment, shopping and restaurant venue. With careful, yet playful attention to design and outdoor amenities, West Harbor aims to become the center of the hearts and lives of San Pedro’s residents and visitors. Also in the works is an outdoor waterfront concert venue by Nederlander Concerts that will seat 6,000 people and a mile-long waterfront promenade will connect to the LA Cruise Terminal Promenade. Visitors will enjoy outdoor dining and entertainment,

ANIMAL SERVICES Help for Birds, Marine Mammals, Cats and Dogs

As a coastal town, San Pedro residents share their love of animals a bit beyond cats and dogs: There’s a hospital for sea lions and seals, and a bird rescue operation for birds oiled by crisis spills. Both the Marine Mammal Care Sea Lion Hospital and the International Bird Rescue (located next to one another at the Angels Gate Complex) work with local schools for on-site visits and mobile classrooms.

International Bird Rescue’s Los Angeles wildlife center in San Pedro treats approximately 1,500 waterbirds a year and specializes in wildlife rehabilitation, education, and oil spill response. Bird Rescue has responded to over 225 oil spills worldwide and is a proud member of California’s Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN).
