2012

Steve Welcome

President Atlantis Cricket Club - NY On behalf of the members of Atlantis Cricket Club - NY, I welcome you to our 2012 Awards Dinner. By any measure, this was another successful year for Atlantis. Even though a championship once again eluded us on the field, we continue to blaze the trail for cricket in the USA, and leading by example. One month ago, our leadership in the cricketing community was recognized, as our secretary John Aaron, was inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame, in Hartford, CT. This honor could not have been given to a more deserving person. John joined cricketing luminaries like Clive Lloyd and Sunil Gavaskar, to name a few, in the Hall of Fame.

On the playing field we had a terrific season, but came up short in the 40-Overs final and the semi-final of the T20 tournament. However, we played consistent cricket during the year under skipper Prashanth Nair and vice captain Nicholas Standford. The irrepressible Nick had several scintillating knocks, reaffirming his status as one of the best batsmen in the country, and achieving the rare feat of scoring a magnificent double century in one of his many spectacular innings. Nick was well supported by other centurions Henderson Blades, Shawn Mason, Steven Jacobs and Ron Andrew. In the bowling department we had solid performances across the board. The disappointing end to our 2012 season has not dimmed our expectations. We fully expect to come back even stronger next year.

This year we fielded our first-ever women’s team and saw it as an opportunity to broaden our base membership, and as a contribution to the development of women’s cricket in the USA. Of course, the Atlantis ladies along with some guest players wasted no time in entering and winning their first championship - The 2nd Annual Atlanta Women’s T20 Tournament held over the Memorial Day weekend in the peach State of Georgia. The Atlantis ladies played sparkling cricket in dominating the competition to emerge unbeaten and uphold the championship trophy. Kudos to skipper Nadia Gruny, vice captain Sara Farooq, Joan Alexander-Serrano, Sihle Wilson, Joy Jones, Neha Sukhija, Ivy Mahabir, Gul Imran, Bushra Imran and Sandra Ibarra. We are excited about playing our part in helping women’s cricket grow in the USA.

During the summer our men’s team traveled to Guyana; winning two matches against the Guyana Police Force and losing two to our hosts Demerara Cricket Club, with whom we have been twinned since 2001. It was an enjoyable tour and many of the Atlantis players were visiting Guyana for the very first time. I would like to express our appreciation to President Alfred Mentore and the DCC membership for their gracious hospitality, as well as to the legendary Clive Lloyd - an Atlantis honorary member, for his very generous help during the tour.

It has been our tradition for the past eleven years, to honor a former Test cricketer each year. This year was no different, but as the season’s end approached and our Executive Board reflected on having our first women’s team, it became clear to us that the best way to mark that historic initiative was to add a woman to our exclusive list of former Test cricketers. We are thrilled to bestow honorary membership on Trinidadian-born Stephanie Judith Power. Ms. Power has certainly done her part in the development of West Indies women’s cricket over the years as a player, captain, and assistant coach, as well as conducting coaching clinics here in New York and across the USA.

I am equally pleased and honored that Dr. Glendon Archer has accepted our invitation to become an honorary member of Atlantis. Having known Glendon for almost 40 years, I feel uniquely qualified to say that honor is long overdue. Glendon has represented Atlantis admirably on the field, bowling his gentle but deceptive medium pace. Off the field, Glendon has served in several capacities on the Executive board, including president. Over the years he

has been our principal sponsor and continues to do so. Glendon, we know that your modesty doesn’t allow you to comfortably enjoy this recognition, but we felt that the time was right to show you how much your service to your “country club” means to us. To all our supporters and friends, new and old, thank you for your continued support and generosity.

Alfred Mentore

President, Demerara Cricket Club, Guyana

I’m very pleased to send this message to your members on the occasion of your 46th Anniversary celebrations.

Due to the enthusiasm and hard work of the founding members, the Atlantis Cricket Club NY has grown to be an active and established organization in the life of cricket in America. The activities the club organized to bring closer ties amongst New Yorkers living in and around the metropolitan area and also maintaining strong relationships across the globe, especially with the Demerara Cricket Club in Guyana, is commendable and encouraging. Your prompt response to our invitation to participate in our Centennial Anniversary celebrations here in Guyana showed the interest and concern you have for your alma mater, a club that was instrumental in the formation of Atlantis Cricket Club. This is especially at a time when there has been economic hardship in the NY area. Members of the Demerara Cricket Club continue to strive under the most difficult conditions, and surely value the relationship and assistance that the Atlantis Cricket Club provided, for which we are most grateful. Notably too, 2012 marks the 11th Anniversary of the twinning of the Demerara Cricket Club and the Atlantis Cricket Club and ever since, the two clubs have become one.

I therefore wish to congratulate the President, Executives and members of the Atlantis Cricket Club for all the good work they have done in the past 46 years to foster goodwill, camaraderie and competitiveness amongst members, and the support given to the Demerara Cricket Club. I convey our greetings and good wishes on this happy occasion of your 46th Anniversary celebrations, and also wish you all the best for the future. Congratulations and best wishes!

Alfred Mentore Alfred Mentore President, DCC

At the time of Ms. Power’s retirement from cricket, Rachael Thompson-King of the Trinidad Guardian said, “Power retires a satisfied woman, ending her career at the top of her game, leading the ‘Calypso Girls - T&T’s national women’s team…”

Ms. Power has been a public school teacher in Trinidad for the past 36 years. Except for taking a three-year hiatus from cricket after giving birth to her son Stephan in 1986, she has maintained her connection with the cricketing community and the development of cricket in the Caribbean, and particularly with regard to women’s cricket. Atlantis is very pleased to honor Stephanie Power and to bestow Honorary Lifetime Membership upon such a worthy individual.

This recognition is as much for Ms. Power’s contribution as a player, as it is for her many contributions to the growth of the sport off the cricket field.

2012 Club Honoree: Dr. Glendon F. Archer Dr. Glendon F. Archer has been a member of Atlantis Cricket Club for the past 20 years, where he played as a out-swing medium-pace bowler and hard-hitting middle-order batsman. During that time Glendon has served Atlantis with dedication and commitment as its Secretary, Assistant Secretary Treasurer, and President. As a player, Glendon Archer has made five overseas and several domestic tours with Atlantis and on many occasions served as the team’s chef. He is renowned for his culinary skills. Dr. Archer has been a very generous financial contributor to Atlantis, without his assistance and that of his company Metallica Commodities Corporation; Atlantis could not have provided some of the essentials needed to manage a club where the focus is not only on cricket, but one that plays an integral role in the community. He has on many occasions been the first to volunteer his time, expertise and resources, including his Ossining, New York home for club nights, Bar-B-Ques, Family-Fun-Days and other recreational club activities.

During his earlier cricketing days in Guyana, Glendon Archer represented Queens College, in Guyana and was called to trials for national selection on two occasions. After migrating to the USA, Glendon Archer pursued his academic studies, obtaining degrees from Columbia University: BS (Metallurgical Engineering), MS (Extractive Metallurgy), MS (Mineral Economics), and Doctor of Engineering Science (Extractive Metallurgy) while working at leading industry corporations such as ASARCO, Inc. as a research engineer and manager of raw materials, and as CEO of Centro Trade Minerals & Metals, before becoming the founder and CEO of Metallica Commodities Corporation in 2001 – now a highly successful mineral trading and development company doing business on five continents around the world. Despite Dr. Archer’s hectic international travel schedule, he always finds time to attend several Atlantis matches during the season, often commuting more than 75 miles each way, simply to “hang” with the guys and support his “country club” team.

Dr. Glendon Archer truly exemplifies what it means to be a member of Atlantis Cricket Club.
