On behalf of the Executive Committee and members of the Eastern American Cricket Association, I congratulate Atlantis Cricket Club on its 47th anniversary. As one of the premier clubs in the EACA, Atlantis has set so many examples of which all of us within the league are extremely proud. Atlantis’ participation in the EACA over the years has been consistent, and one can always expect the performances of the club’s players to be of a high standard, on and off the field. Your organization has set the bar for other clubs to emulate, and our league is pleased to have had Atlantis as a competitive member over the years. As one of the leading clubs within the EACA, Atlantis is a trailblazer, and this is evident in several areas on and off the cricket field. More recently, your women’s cricket program has garnered much respect and support across the USA. Your club’s support for the development of an Atlantis Women’s Cricket team has resulted in back-to-back T20 championships in Atlanta, GA, and a host tournament against the Atlanta Pearls in New York. This is indeed a remarkable accomplishment in only two years. The EACA hopes other clubs within the league and the New York Cricket Region would follow your lead in helping women’s cricket to grow. It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our 2013 Awards Dinner. As we bring down the curtain on our 47th season, am pleased to report that our club is as strong as it’s ever been.
I
Not unlike last year, we had mixed fortunes on and off the field. As they did last year, the women’s team enjoyed success in the two tournaments they participated in. In the Memorial Day Weekend Atlanta’s T20 tournament organized by the Georgia Women Cricket Association (GWCA), the ladies dominated the competition in successfully defending their 2012 championship title. Atlantis was led by US National player Nadia Gruny, who had a wonderful weekend, emerging as the tournament’s MVP. We were honored to be joined by West Indies women’s batting superstar, Stafanie Taylor, who sported the Atlantis colors in a one-time appearance in the finals. Stafanie did not disappoint and treated the crowd to a masterful display of strokeplay. The women’s team did not miss a beat as they hosted the Atlanta Pearls team over the Labor Day Weekend at the Erskine Cricket Ground in Brooklyn. Once again, the ladies emerged victorious. However, the theme of the weekend was less about winning or losing, and more about showcasing women’s cricket and player development. Congratulations ladies, well done! Despite being one of the youngest and more talented teams in the Eastern American Cricket Association, our men’s team once again failed to deliver a championship in either the Power40 or T20 tournaments. We played well enough to make it to the semi-final in the Power40 competition where we lost to Richmond Hill Cricket Club. In the T20 tournament we suffered a similar fate in the quarter-final match to the same team. As we reflect on this season past, it is clear that our talent alone is no guarantee for success. We all have to re-dedicate ourselves to working together to provide a quality and fun-filled environment to help us achieve our goals. Once again this year, we honored the memory of Shevonne Mentis, through the Shevonne Mentis Educational Scholarship Fund by awarding financial stipends to Jasmine Newton, the daughter Herbert Newton, our Executive Vice President, and Atlantis all-rounder Alex Amsterdam. The Shevonne Mentis Educational Scholarship Fund is funded entirely by Atlantis’ members and friends who support our various fundraising activities. Part of the proceeds of every dollar we raise goes into the scholarship fund. Thank you all for you support. Today, as we look forward, Atlantis Cricket Club is in a unique position. We have an opportunity to positively impact the growth and development of cricket in the United States. With the team of dedicated cricket enthusiasts and administrators in our midst, we must continue to seek new ways to encourage young people to join our sport. While at times frustration with the many obstacles we face in trying to grow the game may derail us, it is important that we remember the many benefits this lovely game has given us and look to pass that on to the next generation of cricketers here in the USA. I want to take this time to thank the members of our club for their support throughout the year. In particular, I would like to give special thanks to Leslie “Tulu” Lewis and John Aaron for their tireless efforts in working to keep our club as one of the premier institutions in the cricketing community. I firmly believe that our club would be infinitely better as an organization if we were to use these two gentlemen as examples of the commitment required to build a successful organization. Tonight Atlantis honors one of the stalwarts of our club; Hewlett Ewart “Letty” Matthias, is a living testimony to the longevity of Atlantis, and our ongoing effort to acknowledge the contributions of such individuals as tonight’s honoree. Letty you are joining an esteemed bunch of Life Members. Congratulations and enjoy the company. Ewart “Letty” Matthias
Hewlett Ewart “Letty” Matthias grew up in the village of Agricola on the East Bank of the Demerara River in Guyana, where he first learned his basic cricketing skills. The fourth of six children, Letty played “Little League Cricket” in his native British Guiana, later Guyana, and grew up playing in the shadows of such cricketing stalwarts as Vincent Mayers and Neville “Plantain” Waldron, and according to his brother Oscar Matthias, “…much to the amusement of others like Carlyle Miller, Winston English and Rudolph Phillips.” In 1968, Letty followed his oldest brother and two sisters to North America and with him traveled his passion for the sport of cricket, where he later joined Atlantis Cricket Club in New York and played alongside many of same players he associated with in Guyana, including Vincent Mayers with whom he played for the East Bank XI in Guyana, and later under the captaincy of Oscar Williams, for Atlantis in New York. Rudolph "Philly" Phillips, who has known Letty for more than 35 years, recalls Letty playing for the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and Maltenoes Sports Club in Guyana, as an opening batsman, before leaving Guyana for Canada and subsequently the USA. Another Atlantis stalwart Carlyle Miller fondly remembers the days when Letty played alongside him as an opening batsman and off-spinner on the Atlantis team and under the captaincy of Oscar Williams in the early 70s. Unfortunately, in 1997 Letty lost the love of his life and wife of 22 years, who left behind an adopted daughter that now resides in South Carolina. Five years later, Letty suffered a stroke and lost his ability to speak. Everyone hopes that with God’s help and the ever-improving nature of science and medicine, that one day Letty would regain his ability to discuss, and even debate who the cricketing heroes of his time were. Letty, through his brother Oscar, remains thankful for his friends who have been able to support him throughout his ordeal, and steadfastly holds out the hope that the good Lord works in mysterious ways. It is obvious from speaking with some of the former Atlantis cricketers, themselves Honorary Life Members of Atlantis that Letty Matthias is more than deserving of such an honor. Tonight, Atlantis is proud to add the name of Hewlett Ewart Matthias to its honor roll, and as one of its Honorary Life Members. Letty is more than deserving of joining such an esteemed fraternity of those who were similarly honored. 9

2013 Year of the Women - Atlantis is Atlanta’s Women’s cricket has been around for quite sometime, despite the dominance of men at the sport. Atlantis Cricket Club - NY is making it possible for women to once more become actively involved in the sport, in the New York metropolitan area and beyond. Atlantis...more than just men’s cricket!
Indeed, girls played sports before 1895, but these were intramurals. A basketball match was played between girls of Montclair High and Horace Mann of New York City in 1897. But the Pelham Hall versus Rosemary Hall cricket match preceded both this basketball match and the Girls Interscholastic Athletic League, which was formed in 1900. In fact, a photo is said to exist in the Pelham Library in a book titled The Pelham Manor Story 1891 - 1991 written by James B. Saunders, who wrote "Young ladies of Mrs. Hazen's School (Pelham Hall) dropped their bat and ball long enough to pose for the photographer before engaging the girls of Rosemary Hall in a serious contest of cricket." Mr. Saunders also wrote, "Results of the game are lost in history." Mr. Saunders need not have despaired. CRICKET IS USA'S FIRST INTERSCHOLASTIC GIRLS SPORT - 1895 CRICKET MATCH BETWEEN PELHAM HALL AND ROSEMARY HALL
By Venu Palaparthi In 1895, Rosemary Hall, a girls preparatory school founded by Mrs. Caroline RuutzRees of England defeated Mrs. Hazen's School for Girls (popularly known as Pelham Hall) in a cricket match played at Wallingford, Connecticut. There is no official record of this first ever match but New York Times referred to the 1895 victory of Rosemary Hall a year later when Pelham Hall returned the favor. The contest, where the winner took home a "light blue banner," became an annual tradition, and is the oldest interscholastic sporting event for girls in USA for any sport.
In a story filed on November 14, 1896, Times noted: The Esplanade lawn at "Prospect Hill was the scene here today of a winter contest of a most unusual kind." The writer was quite taken by the novelty of it all and went on to describe the occasion vividly. "Bareheaded and wearing sweaters and short skirts, daughters of some of the most prominent men in the country defied the cold, wintry wind. With enthusiasm and skill the twenty-two bowled, batted, and fielded. A large crowd, chiefly composed of Pelham's most fashionable folk, witnessed the game. Excitement ran high, for last year the Pelham Hall girls journeyed to Wallingford and were defeated by the Rosemary cricketers. ...more than just cricket! Shevonne Mentis Educational Scholarship Fund In demonstrating that Atlantis is more than just cricket, the Shevonne Mentis Educational Scholarship Fund was established by Atlantis Cricket Club – NY following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and in memory of the 25-year old daughter of Aubrey “Major” Mentis, a member of Atlantis. Ms. Mentis was an employee of Marsh USA Inc. in the World Trade Center. At her untimely death, the very ambitious young woman was pursuing a degree in Business Management the from the Borough of Manhattan Community College of the City University of New York. The fund provides financial scholarships and/or book stipend awards to approved individuals pursuing educational opportunities and recommended by members of Atlantis Cricket Club. It is funded by the financial contributions of members, supporters, and part-proceeds from the club’s fundraising events.
In addition, the fund has made an award in Ms. Mentis’ name to her alma mater the Borough of Manhattan Community College, for students majoring in Business Management. The fund wishes to thank those individuals and businesses that have contributed, for their generosity.

Annual Toy Collection Drive
Atlantis Cricket Club collects several dozen coats and other articles of warm clothing each year and present same to homeless persons and community outreach agencies that provide warm clothing for the less fortunate members of our society.
For the past eleven years, the members of Atlantis Cricket Club have collected new unwrapped toys for donation to the pediatric departments of local New York hospitals, the College Opportunity to Prepare for Employment (COPE) program, and many other notfor-profit agencies that distribute toys to children at Christmas.
Habitat for Humanity Program Atlantis Cricket Club participates in Habitat for Humanity’s home building program in the New York metropolitan area. A program aimed at assisting low-income families construct their first homes. 18
Since the fund was established, twenty-three recipients have benefited and have or are currently attending such American educational institutions as the University at Buffalo, The University of Maryland, Harvard University, University of New Mexico, New York City Shevonne Mentis College of Technology, Nassau County Community College, Bard College and Boston University.
The toys are collected at the club’s annual holiday party in December, and presented to the agencies in time for distribution to the children during the Christmas holidays. NOTE: To contribute or participate in any of the above programs, please e-mail us at info.atlantisccny@gmail.com
