June streaming options feature diverse superheroes, teen vampires and siblings from an alternate dimension
MS. MARVEL
High school just got a whole lot more complicated for Avengers superfan Kamala Khan, who gets new superpowers. The Pakistani-American teen is magically infused with the same powers as her idol Captain Marvel - talk about growing changes. The new show is based off the comics of the same name and follows her life in New Jersey as she balances fighting bad guys while getting home in time to finish her homework. Actress Iman Vellani is carrying the cape for all young teens of color who haven't gotten to see a diverse set of superheroes. As a mother to a Desi 5-year-old, I'm thrilled she's going to be able to look up to a heroic young woman with her skin color. Marvel is finally doing it right.
Disney Plus 6/8 FIRST KILL
Speaking of teens with supernatural abilities, First Kill - based on a short story by Victoria Schwab described as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Killing Eve" - is tailor-made for the newest generation hooked on blood-sucking romance. Sarah Catherine Hook plays Juliette, a freshly-made vampire who falls in love with vampire hunter Calliope, played by Imani Lewis. We get the same heat of the will-they-or-won’tthey relationship as Elena and bad boy Damon first gave us in The Vampire Diaries. It’s even more intensified since they are supposed to be mortal enemies. Will they kill each other or put their otherworldly differences aside and form a beautiful bond? Keep the crosses within reach and make sure you have plenty of garlic on hand when this show premieres!
Netflix 6/10 THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY SSN 3
After the nearly apocalyptic ending of season two, our favorite band of misfit sibling superheroes are back. Or are they? The dysfunctional bunch created an alternate timeline and version of themselves and must face off in the latest season. Meet the Sparrow Academy - the elite new siblings from the alternate dimension are most certainly going to create issues for our original crew. Elliot Page is now returning as Viktor and I applaud Netflix for their ability to quickly adapt to such a beautiful and authentic change for the actor. For those still mourning the loss of Ashtray in season two of Euphoria, slip those tissues back in your Kleenex box because Javon “Wanna” Walton is taking on a surprising and well-deserved role in the series.
