VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Evansville's Nick Corey needed some time to grieve before seeking out a new furry friend after the passing of his 18-year-old cat earlier this year. It took about four months to get in the right head space, but in early July he finally felt ready to adopt an animal from a local shelter. Given the opportunity, Corey would have brought home a dog - a large one, ideally - but apartment life dictated otherwise so he set his sights on rescuing a cat from the VHS where an acquaintance, Mackenzee McKittrick, serves as the Events and Volunteer Coordinator. Turns out she had been fostering two kittens and suggested that Corey meet them. The rest, as they say, is history.

"I didn't necessarily have my eye on adopting two kittens, but I kind of fell in love with them when I met them," Corey explains. Not hard to see why because Freya and Artemis - siblings described by Corey as "a Maine Coon type and then one that just looks like a normal grey cat" - are incredibly cute and super playful. And it was a good decision to keep them together as Corey works long hours on third shift. The caring staff at the VHS emphasized the importance of the kittens having each other for company while he's gone - a sentiment with which Corey, a lifelong animal lover, wholeheartedly agreed. While he's currently employed at a plastics company, his résumé includes a six-year stint in pet retail which saw him educating people on proper animal nutrition. "That was my big passion," he states. "People just don't really know how to properly take care of their animals."

Safe to say Freya and Artemis are being cared for very well at their new home. Corey notes that the pair adapted quickly to the change in scenery, taking all of 30 minutes to get acclimated before getting down to the business of being kittens, running around and "acting all crazy." Reportedly, they can still be a little skittish with strangers but warm up quickly. Next year, Freya and Artemis - who currently share the apartment with a Leopard gecko - might get another roommate when Corey moves to a bigger place where he can properly house a large dog. Could be another adoption spotlight down the road...
