VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Evansville's Chloe Wannamuehler has always been a friend to animals, growing up with numerous cats, dogs and guinea pigs. Once out on her own and settled, she cared for a beloved rescue dog up until its passing just five months ago - a loss that hit hard after 11 years together. And while she still had a tortoise to keep her company, Wannamuehler missed the companionship of a furry friend, eventually opting to start the search for another dog last month. She scoured the VHS website and caught sight of Chomper, a Pitbull mix whose history somewhat mirrored her previous rescue in the sense that he was reportedly a little aggressive towards children and other dogs. That gave Wannamuehler pause. "I thought I should find a match that would be a little friendlier," she says. "But I couldn't really find one and then got back on the website and Chomper was still there - such a cute little chunker. I couldn't resist."

Wannamuehler took a friend with her to the VHS for a meet & greet with Chomper who initially came across as indifferent to their presence, almost cold. But everything changed for the better quickly. "There were toys on the table, including a plushy toy - a stuffed animal - and he was all about it," she recalls. "We played tug and ripped the plushy in half on accident. He was super cute, let me take the toys out of his mouth with no aggression. He minded well, would come or sit on command - he was just as sweet as can be." That sealed the deal for Wannamuehler; she signed the adoption papers and headed home with Chomper to begin a new journey in life together.

Somewhat surprisingly - but much to the delight of Wannamuehler - Chomper immediately blossomed under her care, his previous indifference replaced by excitement and enthusiasm. Perhaps most unexpectedly, the three-year-old pup lives for cuddling. "He wants nothing but to spoon and be the little spoon," Wannamuehler says with a laugh. "I have not slept without this dog being the little spoon since I got him. He's 73 pounds so he doesn't leave me much choice - he's there whether I like it or not."
