ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD: RIVER WEST Located within the neighborhood of West Town, northwest of the Loop, River West is a small community located just west of the Kennedy Expressway. Like much of Chicago, the area was originally farmland, until major settlement began in the area during the 19th century. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was divided predominantly along ethnic lines, with distinct neighborhoods reflecting the nationality of those who inhabited it. However, as the years progressed, these divisions gradually faded, and the neighborhoods that presently exist were formed. Public education is provided by the Chicago Public Schools system, which offers education to children in grades K-12. Numerous ‘L’ trains run through the community, including the Blue Line, which provides transportation to O’Hare International Airport, and the Chicago Loop. Additionally, the CTA runs dozens of bus routes through the neighborhood, which connects River West with all areas of the city. In addition to a new generation of residents, the neighborhood has also seen a number of trendy eateries, bars and boutiques pop up along throughout the area. With trendy Wicker Park nearby, residents also have immediate access to dozens of restaurants, eclectic shops and art galleries.
