A Force of Friendship

ANDY AND MAC EVERETT HONOR BISHOP GEORGE E. BATTLE JR. WITH MAJOR GIFT

Afriendship forged over decades has resulted in a significant gift that will promote equity in medical education at Atrium Health. Loyal supporters of Atrium Health Foundation, Andy and Mac Everett, donated $250,000 to honor their longtime friend, Bishop George E. Battle Jr. Their gift will be dedicated to the scholarship fund named in Bishop Battle’s honor.

The Bishop George E. Battle Jr. Scholarship Fund was established earlier this year with a $5 million commitment from Atrium Health. The fund will support the continuing education of students from underserved communities who are pursuing degrees in health sciences at an Atrium Health-affiliated college or university, including the future Wake Forest School of Medicine in Charlotte. Andy and Mac were some of the first to step up with an additional gift.

Mac, who retired from Wells Fargo as Senior Executive Vice President, Director of Corporate and Community Affairs, worked closely with Bishop Battle during their years of service on the board of commissioners at Atrium Health. In addition, their paths crossed as Bishop Battle led efforts for small businesses and after school programs for at risk youth, while Mac led the United Way and served on the chamber of commerce. Thanks to their longtime friendship and shared passion and commitment to education, students pursuing a health career have hope for a brighter future.

1. The bond between Bishop Battle and Mac Everett extended beyond business and community service and into a friendship forged between their families. When Mac’s daughter married, Bishop Battle was there to officiate; and when his granddaughter Helen came along – the Bishop was there to welcome her.

2. The Everett's gift follows numerous contributions they have made to health and education, including Levine Children's Hospital, Levine Cancer Institute, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
