Swedish War-Metallers get more than they bargained for this Christmas...
Following the capture of Ms. Claus in the back room of Sabaton’s headquarters that night (The HMV Forum, London) We had a good old chat with Joakim Brodén front man of Swedish combat kings, Sabaton about their world tour, flame throwers and his favourite ever Christmas present... So you’re currently on an epic tour... how’s it all going? So far so good both in the UK and Europe I must say! We’ve been having quite a few more people than expected - I mean, I don’t know how many but I heard we sold over 1500 tickets here some time ago already, so… possibly 2000 here tonight in London… it’s gonna be fun! We’ve been on the road since April... we’ve been doing the United States, Canada, South America, we’ve been quite a few places around Europe, also Israel actually, and Cyprus. Then basically all of Continental Europe - except Eastern Europe we haven’t seen much of that yet… we are going there in March next year. It’s not often a band goes to Israel to play... Let’s just say the climate is much better than here! Nothing wrong with the UK, I love it here! Good beer, good people but your climate sucks ass! Israel is different - its a different world from everywhere else, you know? Love the food, love the people there aswell… there is a good metal crowd - really crazy because they don’t get that many metal shows. I think there are more metal shows in London in one week than they get over there in one year in the whole country! So Sabaton are into war. When did you decide to give your music a military theme? Actually we had, many years ago, only the music for the song “Primo Victoria”. And me and Pär (the bass player) sat down and we talked about “what does this music tell us?”. We couldn’t really figure it out… at that time we would write lyrics about just about anything basically, but then we thought - “well it’s got a big epic sound to this song so we need a big epic subject”, so we figured - D-Day. And once we started doing a little bit of research and writing lyrics it was kind of an awakening because writing lyrics wasn’t a
necessary evil anymore…all of a sudden it was fun, more engaging, more interesting for us - so we figured “Hey! Let’s make an album only about war” - and... we’re still doing that! But it makes sense because there are enough bands already singing about drinking beer, f*&%$!g women and killing dragons. But also, there are lots of interesting stories that actually happened that have been forgotten, so why not re-tell them instead? Lots of good content then? Unfortunately we’ve been waging a lot of war over the years, so we’re not gonna run out of material! So we’ve just wrapped up the shoot with Ms. Claus and all of your presents. How was the machine gun she brought you? Heavy! I had to hold it for quite some time. It sounds strange but I like weapons - from a historical point of view, not actually using them! I prefer it when a photoshoot of some kind is connected to what we do instead of somebody just putting, basically ‘the village people in camo pants’ into a setting where it makes no sense for us to belong…but making some sort of heavy-metal-war-christmas - that fits so why not?! Are you looking forward to Christmas? What are you up to this year? I usually go home to Mum and Dad to say “Congratulations” and “Merry Christmas” and stuff like that. I really like Christmas but not because it’s Christmas but because everybody is so busy doing everything

we figured at least here in London let’s try and show you guys how a proper Sabaton show goes. If you go to a festival in Europe, that’s what you get but you guys never had the chance so we thought lets go in and blow the place up! I really think it fits our music perfectly - we have flame throwers - quite a lot of them actually so I would say if you’re taking picture don’t get too close!
We’ve heard you’re filming tonight for a DVD... when do we get to see ourselves on TV? It’s gonna be out within less than a year. We’re gonna So tonight is billed as your “Pyro Show” - can you have this night, one in Oberhausen in Germany and tell us what’s gonna be exploding on stage? Hopefully we’re not gonna be exploding on stage, let’s one in Gothenburg, Sweden filmed and also there is a big festival show in Poland. We’re gonna pack it with start with that... But there is always a slight chance these 4 shows but also a whole road movie starting of it happening! We figured, we always wanted to do the full Sabaton show everywhere - unfortunately it’s from September this year going all the way through to early April next year - it’s gonna be quite a fucked not possible in all of the places we play here in the UK because of roof clearance and stuff like that… but up road movie actually!
