Somewhere in the winding old back streets of London, tucked away from the daily grind of tourists and taxi cabs, you’ll find It Something Hell’s. Step through it’s doors and you’ll be welcomed into one of the UK’s most authentic Rockabilly haunts, and greeted by the Demon Barber of Carnaby Street himself - Mr. Ducktail. Known for his razor sharp cuts and killer quiffs he’s been cutting hair for over 30 years and has mastered his craft to a T. So Mr. Ducktail has got the greasers covered, but what about you vintage vixens out there? Well, the Demon Barber has a partner in crime who goes by the name of Miss. Betty. This French femme fatale sculpts victory rolls and pin curls to perfection, and is a master of cuts and colour. Her well honed handiwork is renowned across the land. We headed down to the salon to see the king and queen of quiffs in action and to collaborate with the dexterous duo on the Attitude Clothing vintage lookbook. Along for the ride were burlesque perfomers Scarlett Belle and Constance Peach, as well as tattooed pin up and salon assistant Ruby Fortune. Miss Betty styled
the girls hair to match their outfits selected from our wide range of retro clothing. We spent the day shooting at the salon, soaking up the rockabilly atmosphere of It’s Something Hell’s and meeting their daily mix of unique clients and visitors. We managed to steal Mr. Ducktail away for a 5 minute chat between appointments to get a glimpse into the life of a rockabilly rebel... How long has the shop been open & when did you start cutting hair? “We opened with Miss Betty in 2008 at Something Hell’s in London, I’ve personally been cutting hair for 31 years. I learnt a modern way, but I suppose I have actually been cutting Rockabilly hair for 31 years now, as I was a rockabilly kid myself.” Where abouts are you from originally? “I was born in Paris but we were living in Toulouse where we had 2 shops, we then sold the shops to move to London. We decided to move here mainly for the music as it was a bit boring in France, no real rocking scene! Now it’s become better there because it’s so in fashion, but 5 years ago it was dead, only a handful of rockabilly people…so London was the place to go.”
Do you do a lot of events work & travel around with the salon? “We used to travel quite a lot when we were in France, but since we came to London we can’t do it anymore. We just keep on a few shows, like The Rhythm Riot as they booked us 10 years ago when no one had heard of us in the UK, so we stay true to these kind of people! Can you tell me about some of the models you’ve worked with?? “There’s normally 2 kinds of models that I work with…the one that I meet in real life who comes into the shop for a photoshoot and then a friend of mine, Scott Cole who is a photographer for a tattoo magazine, he puts a lot of my T-shirts and vests on loads of beautiful models that he works with, it’s always like Christmas when I receive a nice picture from him!!” Tell us some more about your products – you have your own line of grease, right? “Yes, I’m co-working with a French brand that do my grease shampoo and then on the side I have my own range of merchandise- T-shirts, mugs, badges, bottle openers and I hope some knickers, my next challenge is to develop that.” Can you tell us about some of the bands and Rockabilly lifestyle aspects that you are into outside of work. “In London the scene is so big that I manage to see a lot of bands here, there are a lot of young bands coming up that I like, The Caezars, Knoxville – all these young bands that bring new blood into the scene. Rock’n’roll music is for young people, the future, we are the past now!” So you cut hair & showcase your merchandise at London Edge & other events – what’s next for Mr Ducktail? “A holiday! That would be nice, I’ve only had 7 days off this year so a holiday’s a good plan. After that, I don’t know it’s all gone so much quicker than I was thinking, it’s developed into a brand but I never even thought of that…it just happened!” What do you love the most about Rockabilly culture and lifestyle? “The girls!” For more details on It’s Something Hell’s visit their website www.itsomethinghells.com

RUM KNUCKLES IS THE LATEST BRAND TO HIT ATTITUDE CLOTHING. FRESH FROM THE BRAIN OF RUGMAN, ONE OF LONDON’S PREMIERE UNDERGROUND ARTISTS, THIS BRAND MIXES A PUNK ROCK ETHOS WITH AN URBAN TWIST. WE STEP INTO THE RING WITH RUM KNUCKLES TO FIND OUT WHAT MAKES THIS BRAND SUCH A KNOCKOUT... We headed down to the rainy backstreets of Soho to have a chat with the illusive RugMan, co-founder of one of our favourite streetwear brands Rum Knuckles. Combining a rich personal heritage and lashings of artistic experience, Rum Knuckles is not only aesthetically cool but holds a vibrant and fascinating backstory. Working with everything from acrylics to digital, RugMan has a flare for all artistic methods and is able to create some truly unique imagery. With an exciting new collection dropping imminently and the brand venturing into the realms of womenswear Rum Knuckles is truly a cut above the rest. When did you start the brand & can you tell us about the story behind it? I’ve been a graphic designer for years mainly in the realm of fashion, I’d worked for various independent companies and small labels where we’d done
Can you describe your style of art to anyone who hasn’t seen it? My art is very much character based, it’s been influenced by collecting comics from the age of 8…from Disney through to 2000 AD basically loads of different comics. The style is pretty much still stencil based at the moment, so very graphic, pop art-y and VERY punchy.

collaborations with bigger labels – like Vans for example. During my time working in that industry, I decided I wanted to create my own British streetwear brand. The name Rum Knuckles comes from my Great Uncle who was a boxer in the Navy during World War II, he was nicknamed Rum Knuckles because he liked to drink and fight. I always liked that name, so decided to adapt it to a streetwear label, using my artwork!
Tell us a bit more about the collection that’s going into Attitude. It’s quite a big collection this time, we’re in our fourth season but this time we’ve put everything in there. There’s skateboards, lanyards, belts, loads of accessories. The key pieces this season are definitely more geared towards the back print, but there’s also a lot of all over prints, black & white with gold ink is a strong staple too. We’ve also got the varsity & coach jacket and obviously the classic tee’s, sweats, hoodies. So yeah, we’ve really moved it on! How do you balance the brands fashion element with your own separate art career that you have going on? I’m constantly doing work, but in terms of actually painting there isn’t as much time to do that when running a company. But these things tend to be quite seasonal, so for my artwork it really picks up around Christmas, there’s always loads of shows, collaborations, print releases etc. Is there anyone you haven’t collaborated with yet that you would love to work with? Collaboration wise I’d LOVE to do an alternative Disney, if we could get a license agreement with them that’d be amazing. As far as brands wise, I’d love to do some pieces with Vans in conjunction with Rum Knuckles, and the number one brand for me apart from Vans is definitely Stussy. What’s next for Rum Knuckles after the new collection lands? We feel we’ve reached a point in Britain where we’ve got quite a good standing, now we want to move into different territories. Here at Attitude Clothing, we could barely contain our excitement when we heard that Nu-Metal godfathers Korn were back... and this time with Brian “Head” Welch retuning for the first time since his departure some 10 years ago. It’s been a wild ride for Korn thus far and the Billboard topping metallers have enjoyed a new lease of life and return to form with the release of their 11th studio album “The Paradigm Shift”. Having overcome addictions, fall outs and a plethora of personal issues they’re back with their most experimental album to date. Their latest offering sees a return to skull crushing riffs of their early years, and nods to those game changing, genre defining records that put Korn on top all those years ago. Their sound remains as lyrically dark and heavy as ever. Frontman Jonathan Davis tells us a bit more about the writing process for the 11th studio album, “When I was writing the lyrics I was completely on autopilot, I wasn’t there. It’s really hard for me to nail what I was trying to talk about and what I was trying to sing about, it was definitely streaming conscious type stuff. It was awesome having Don (Gilmore, producer) helping me with it and my two boys helped me too. Anytime I was singing I would look down and ask them “Was that good?” and they would be straight up and tell me.” Staying true to their characteristically dark imagery ‘The Paradigm Shift’ artwork is as intriguing as the album title. Guitarist Munky helps shed some light, “Head gave me the sort of push like “Hey! Why don’t you come up with the title for the album?”. I guess he liked the last album title so I started to research some optical illusion stuff on the internet and came across this pencil drawing of a rabbit, but if you look at it another way it’s a duck. It’s whatever your mind wants to see. It made sense with Head returning to the band, it just had a shift – a paradigm is an element that makes another element better.”
The band’s last album ‘The Path Of Totality’ had a collection of different producers involved, including the world renowned Skrillex. Heavily influenced by dubstep and electronica, it was a new direction for Korn, Jonathan & Munky explain not only this crossover, but its influence on the new record. Munky: “I think that Jonathan and I, when we did ‘The Path to Totality’ we just threw everything that we knew out the door to recreate something that was completely fresh, new and exciting. We just wanted to satisfy ourselves”.
JD: “Yeah, it sparked something new within us. Something that I don’t think Head could truly understand cos he wasn’t there with all that experimenting and all that hell we went through trying to figure out how we could make this work. We busted our asses and were so excited about it, of course we wanted to bring it into this one. Me and Head, we were banging heads as he wanted to make a metal record and I was like “Oh God…”. We went back and forth but we needed to do that, we needed to compromise on both sides for it to turn into what it did.” The word on everyones lips is the return of guitarist Brian “Head” Welch, having quit the band in 2005 to pursue his own projects and most notably becoming a born again Christian. It looked as though guitarist & frontman wouldn’t be seeing eye to eye again… That was until May this year, when
Head unexpectedly joined the band on stage for “Blind” at a festival in the US to thousands of elated fans. Since then it seems the group have worked out their issues with Head playing an integral role in the writing and formation of the new album, “With Brian back in the band, I think it’s a lot easier. It gives me more of a relaxed feel because it’s another creative mind in the room, someone that you trust. He’s really good at writing melodies over riffs. The legendary Norwegian black metallers Carpathian Forest are set to descend upon our capital city during the aptly cold and bleak month of December. Attitude Clothing talk exclusively to the band in the build up to their morbid return to Camden Town’s deep, dark Underworld... It’s been a long time since these five satanic warlords hit our shores and even longer since their last album. Forming back in the early 90s under the name Enthrone, Nattefrost or as he was then known – Lord Nosferatu, was at the forefront of the early black metal scene in Norway. Changing the name to Carpathian Forest, which was based upon a powerful and ancient Vampire-like race called the “Carpathians” from the fictional universe of the Dark Series books, the band released a handful of demo-tapes until their first studio work in 1995 via the legendary Avantegarde Music. After several line up changes and a barrage of personal difficulties Nattefrost still remains a solid, and extremley respected, backbone within the black metal community. Propelled to an even higher iconic status by gracing the front cover of Peter Beste’s book “True Norwegian Black Metal” controversially published by Vice and sold worldwide, Nattefrost became one of the most talked about and recognised black metal artists in the world. in 2006, the band took a relative hiatus from touring after 2009, although rumours constantly spread like wildfire it wasn’t until 2012 that the band truly leapt back from their solemn slumber. With a new album in the works and an upcoming intimate London show Carpathian Forest are one of the few bands to remain true to all things black metal. We caught up with the illustrious guitarist Tchort to talk corpse paint, their plans for next year and what it means to be in one of the most brutal and celebrated bands in the black metal genre. 2013 has been a year of one off shows and festivals for you guys – with London coming up in December, why did you choose the intimate settings of The Underworld to mark your first UK show in over 6 years? We always liked to play at the Underworld, and besides, I think we have more energy as a live band when we play smaller stages. The intimate setting suits us better than big festival stages although we did get more experience with them as well over the last year. Anyways, we are looking forward in returning to the UK after all this time.
The band weren’t able to make Maryland Death Fest this year due to multiple visa issues & illness, any plans to return to the US in 2014? We haven’t made any plans for 2014 except for 2 festival shows because we are working on a new album right now and we don’t want to delay it more by filling up our schedules with live shows. I think it’s time to present some new material to the fans and we are looking forward to adding new songs to the setlist as well. That will be our main priority for 2014. When the new album is out returning to the US will definitely be a part of our plan. We love what you guys wear on stage, you have some brutal spiked arm bands– do you make these yourselves? Most of it was crafted either by ourselves or fans, yes. Not all of it is suitable to wear on stage if you want to play your instruments well, but all of it belongs to the «package» that you get with Carpathian Forest. Nattefrost was on the front cover of Peter Beste’s book “True Norwegian Black Metal” which is still being sold in major bookstores worldwide. How did this kind of exposure affect Carpathian Forest? I think Nattefrost (the band/project) gained more publicity than Carpathian Forest did from the photo, but Nattefrost himself had been an icon within the scene for many years and the photos and position he got in the book further increased that status.
Most bands seemed to have ditched the corpse paint & blood look, but Carpathian Forest remain true to their image. How important is the band’s image to you? We have had that discussion ourselves, do we want to stop wearing the corpse paint, etc. and we have done some shows in the past without it, but there was something missing. Apart from the music it’s perhaps that last link to the old days when there was a vibe, a feeling, around the style, the lifestyle and the scene. We are not ready to cut that link. It’s still too important to us. The readers should come check us out at the Underworld in December and witness the full package like it’s supposed to be! With a new Carpathian Forest album in the works, and with fans coming from far and wide to see this one off show, excitement is building and we can’t wait to see what the band have in store for us.
