New to Attitude Clothing, Syd & Mallory is an independent label made in Sheffield. Celebrated fashion designers Lucy Jo Newell and Kirsteen Hardie are at the helm of this unique label, taking inspiration in everything from their home turf to the 90’s Seattle grunge scene and of course a healthy smattering of British Punk. We caught up with Kirsteen, one half of this dexterous duo and got the lo-down on all thing S&M… What point did you realise you were interested in fashion? I have a Smash Hits diary dated 1989 in which the inlay was a questionnaire about the diary user. Question 10 was, ‘What is your dream job?’, I have answered – “a fashion designer”. I was age 9 at the time. My business partner has always had a creative flair also as her mum is an art teacher. We both made outfits for dancing and [toy] dolls as children. We had a strong mind when dressing even at an early age, which caused tension with our parents. I was the only child in school who was into grunge when all the other kids were wearing sports gear – I looked like a new age traveller with half my head shaved. When did Syd and Mallory come into being? We wanted to create a story behind a concept for the label. The idea is a story loosely based on Mallory Knox (the character Juliette Lewis plays in Natural Born Killers) and the music icon Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd. It’s the idea of their lives if they were together and the kind of relationship and influence they’d have. We are hugely influenced by the trashy American style and psychedelic sounds and styles. Everything has a DIY feel hugely from the true idea of a punk lifestyle. You make handmade limited runs. Is this something that’s important to you? This is the most important aspect of the company. We have often been tempted by cheap, mass produced goods or easy copycat designs but have stuck to our guns and kept the ideals unique and handmade. Although we have had to source extra seamstresses to keep up with wholesale demand we have a great relationship with the people we work with and the city we come from. We are tempted regularly by the joys of London but I think our style and brand needs the struggle of the north and the determination that good design and manufacture can come from anywhere. WITH... 5 MINUTES

We caught up with Front Columnist, alternative model heavy-weight and entrepreneur Arabella Drummond on set at the recent Kill Brand shoot in London earlier this month. She found the time to sneak off from the shoot to answer a few of our questions and tell us about her awesome new business venture opening its doors in Soho this July...

really.

I got into modelling totally by mistake - I had some pictures taken by a friend who was a photographer and they ended up being sold to Front Magazine. After that I was picked up by an agency and that’s it! It was by accident

I enjoy travelling with my work - I’ve had various photo shoots in different countries, I’ve been lucky enough to shoot over in the states, I’ve done some campaigns for companies like Puma and Professor Green and his whole crew. I’ve had loads of fun. I’ve been able to travel and meet loads of awesome people - that’s been the best part of it. I’ve done all of the lads’ mags, a few tattoo magazines and some lifestyle magazines as well. I’ve even been in Graphotism which is a graffiti magazine! I haven’t really done that much fashion stuff, which I would quite like to do now… I like shooting for front magazine because the styling is pretty much the clothes that I wear everyday. It doesn’t really feel like work! They’re the most relaxed. My first tattoo was like when I was 14 or 15 - I don’t even know how I got the tattoo cos I looked like a child! I waited quite a long time before I started getting heavily tattooed. I really planned everything out that I wanted and I’ve been quite specific with the kind of artists that I’ve gone to and what I’ve wanted from them. I’ve left my whole left arm and hand for an artist to do. I really like realism, Nico Hurtado, Cecil Porter are some of my favourite artists and they’re not even in this country! UK artists I’ve got to say Matt Difa, he did my whole right sleeve, I like that new school like comic book, mad perspective, awesome lighting, under lit faces. I’ve never really felt like a person that’s wanted to follow the trends of tattooing, I’ve always gone for things that I liked and I think that’s important. One By One is my baby: I wouldn’t call it a tattoo studio; I would call it more of a lifestyle store because it’s not specifically a tattoo shop. It’s over 2 floors: the basement is a 5 chair tattoo studio and the ground floor is streetwear brands, collectables and art pieces. I’ve hand picked all of the brands that have gone into the store. I’m also working with magazines: fashion magazines, art based magazines as well, that will be stocked in the store. So it’s kind of everything I’m into. People don’t realise that I’ve got a degree in womenswear and I studied fine art so my passion and the things I’m interested in are very much influenced by fashion and art so this feels like a natural direction for me to go in now...

A self confessed tour junkie, Dez Fafara has only just returned from a mega tour with DevilDriver and he’s already ready for another assault on Europe with the recently revived nu-metal legends, Coal Chamber. We managed to catch up with frontman Fafara ahead of this onslaught to get the full story… One of the first things we noticed about Dez was the awesome shirt he was sporting for our photoshoot at London’s Kentish Town Forum. Dez has become quite the ambassador for the new and super-cool LA based label BlackCraft Cult, which you can find exclusively here at Attitude Clothing in the UK. We asked him to give us the lo-down on the brand… “BlackCraft Cult Clothing is a lifestyle choice for those into the esoteric. The designs are cool, edgy, thought provoking and above all, unique. The apparel is made from high quality cotton and the T-shirts are tag-less, making them some of the most comfortable shirts I’ve ever worn! I wear Blackcraft every night on stage with both my bands, DevilDriver and Coal Chamber, and have become tied to the brand!” Mr. Fafara certainly rocks BlackCraft Cult with the full force of all that is heavy and metal: beard, long hair and a plethora of ink. However, any reader born before the 90s will remember a very different Dez - coloured braids, eyeliner and a distinct lack of

facial tattoos. Pioneering the nu-metal movement, any respectable metal fan that lived through the era has a copy of Chamber Music or Dark Days in their collection. And despite disbanding in 2003, hits such as Loco, Sway and Fiend are still hitting the playlists across UK metal clubs. So after 10 years, why return now? “I think it was just time. Those guys have come a long way in their life, you know, they’re off hard drugs. I wanted to revisit the music and it seemed like the perfect time for it. After doing the shows in Australia, doing the shows in South America, it was obvious it was time to revisit it. My key word right now is fun, if it’s fun I want to be in it. It’s fun doing Coal Chamber right now. First time we’d play any of those songs in eleven years, and we come up to Loco and we hear 60 or 70 thousand people singing every word, that was the catalyst to me saying, OK let’s do it in some other places. We got on really well and we had fun. That’s the most important thing right now.” Big things are already happening for the band. Taking their music all over Europe for a nostalgic summer tour with Sevendust and Lacuna Coil, as well as pulling out the big guns for Download, Graspop and Nova Rock. With all this touring taking up their time, Dez rules out the possibility of any new material for the moment. “No, no new stuff for Coal Chamber. We’re just

going to do some tours and see what happens. The catalyst to it was doing Australia and then going down to South America and seeing five or six hundred people outside the building before we went on. Everybody was in their teens, they were probably five years old when we broke up, and it made me think ‘OK let’s do this a little further.’ We’re bringing it to the stage and then coming back for festivals.” Dominating metal current affairs is the news of the Randy Blythe trial, and the impact it will have. With his shows having a reputation for mayhem, Dez admits “Things have changed. DevilDriver shows are pretty crazy, so we normally have stage divers and all of that, but if people come on the stage now I shut the show down. It just doesn’t happen anymore. The other night we had six, seven, eight people jumping off at once so I stopped, I said ‘this is not happening. Stop.’ I don’t think people understand, if they jump off and they don’t get caught, something can happen to them as well, and of course the recourse comes back on us. That’s not what it’s about, it’s about the music. If you’re in the pit go ahead and get crazy, but stay off the stage.” Splitting his time between both DevilDriver and Coal Chamber, we have to know, what’s next? “Touring. I go out with Coal Chamber and then Coal Chamber comes back over here to do festivals and we get ready to release a new record for DevilDriver in August. We’re really excited about that, we’re definitely going to plan tours around it. I love being on the road. You’re either built for it or you’re not, and I like touring.” Finishing up a co-headlined tour with American Death Metal titans Cannibal Corpse, Dez is already itching to get back out on the road and onto the stage. With questions surrounding the choice of combining such different styles on one mega tour, Dez lays any fears to rest. “The Cannibal guys are great and the shows have been incredible. Their fans are taking to us, our fans are taking to them.” Swapping the stage order round from country to country, Attitude

asks, how did you decide? Rock, paper, scissors? “Well we basically said, you guys can close here but we want the UK, and we closed Berlin the other night too. We switched back and forth on that for a bit and everybody was cool with it, like I said they’re like the nicest guys I’ve ever toured with.” So is the UK important to you? “Throughout my career I’ve realised, if you can go to New York, if you can go to LA, if you can go to London and make it happen, you have a chance in other places in the world. I’ve always had a great time here, I have great friends here and it’s always a good time”. Looking forward to a triumphant return to our shores at Download later this month Dez reminisces “The UK is what made Coal Chamber. When we came over and made it here, the rest of the world started really taking off. We had great times here, it’s going to be fun.” Visit www.devildriver.com / www.coalchamberofficial.com for the latest news, releases and full tour details.

and it’s been a really good attendance throughout the whole tour, so great tour for sure. Trevor from Black Dahlia reckons you’re “the nicest guy in metal”… Well I don’t know about that, he’s a very nice guy too and all those guys, Black Dahlia, are one of our favourite bands to tour with. This is probably the fourth, fifth or maybe even sixth tour with them so they’re good friends of ours, they’re great people. We’re actually sharing a bus with the Black Dahlia Murder, great bunch of people to be around and they’re an amazing band, so very cool.

Legends of guts and gore, Cannibal Corpse are potentially one of the most controversial bands in the world. With enemies in high places, including the US government and albums still banned in certain countries these metallers have never been short on publicity. On their recent mega-tour featuring DevilDriver and The Black Dahlia Murder, bassist Alex Webster catches up with Attitude to talk about kittens, sparkles and YouTube parodies.

How do you feel about the negative publicity you have received over the years? If it’s only publicity then it doesn’t bother us, in fact it helps advertise the band. I mean we’re proud of what we do and so if somebody out there is saying “this is bad, don’t listen to this,” chances are the people that like our kind of music are going to be that much more interested in it, you know. So if you’re into metal and you hear about this metal band that have lyrics that are so bad that it’s making some government official angry you’re gonna want to hear what that’s all about. Where it becomes a problem is if they’re able to censor us somehow, for example in Germany we’ve actually got to the point where some of our albums are now available there. That’s the country out of all the countries in Europe we have the most problems in by far. Ever been tempted to write an album about sparkles and kittens? I know that’s supposed to be a humorous question, but we know exactly what Cannibal Corpse is supposed to be. Cannibal Corpse is a gore-oriented death metal band and that’s all we’re ever going to be. Some songs are written from the point of view of victims, some songs are written from the point of view of the killer or whatever, but none of them are going to be about kittens and things like that.

You’re currently on tour with DevilDriver and The Black Dahlia Murder. How has it been? It’s been great, you know. We’ve just finished a whole bunch of shows we did in continental Europe, last night we were in Saarland, Bous in Germany and now we’re up here to being the final part of the tour, which Everyone always talks about your cameo in Ace Ventura. Is Jim Carrey your biggest fan? is four shows here in the UK. That’s been fantastic. We get on great with those guys, they’re a killer band He definitely was aware of who we are and said he

There are lots of Cannibal Corpse parodies on YouTube. Do you have a particular favourite? My favourite right now is the Disposal of the Body one by the JensAndRikard. It’s these two Swedish guys and what they do is they take death metal songs and death metal songs are usually written in a dark sounding minor key, we’re always looking for really dark sounds, we want them to be creepy and horrifying, and they’ll switch the songs slightly. They’ll play it in a major key to make it sound happy and then they’ll do cartoons that go along with the lyrics. Hilarious. It’s my favourite right now. So JensAndRikard, their parody of Disposal of the Body is awesome. Go watch it right now! It’s incredible.

liked it. He had just picked up a couple of our albums a while before that movie was scheduled to be made and I guess he liked it. At first he thought it was kind of funny, he’d never heard anyone sing like that, I seem to remember him saying these things. He knew of our songs and said he grew to like those records that he bought, I think he had Butchered at Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated, and so he asked for us to play certain songs by name for the movie. He was really nice to us and everything but we haven’t heard from him since. From what I hear around the music scene or whatever he’s not really into death metal at this point in his life.

Jim Somers and Bobby Schubenski, founders of BlackCraft.

What’s in store for the next BlackCraft collection? We’re doing a BlackCraft premium line with different washes and dyes. Crop tops, denim vests with hoods, leggings. A whole section of white tees (believe it or not!). And a lot of new tees for men and women. BlackCraft is making waves among the well known. How have you grown the cult? People from all walks of life have been drawn to this brand. It’s been kinda crazy when I stop and think about all these creative and inspiring people wanting to wear BlackCraft. What’s next for BlackCraft? Just trying to be smart by growing the brand organically and making new goals all the time.

Blackcraft Severed Hands Men's T-Shirt - £24.99 BKF102

What was your main drive and inspiration for starting the label? To start something to encourage people to believe in themselves. The fact that people still think there’s a god in 2013 gives us a lot of drive and inspiration. A lot of inspiration

also comes from surrounding yourself with like mined, successful and driven humans. It’s important for us mentally to think positive, work hard and give as much as possible.

Blackcraft Lucifer The Cat Men's T-Shirt - £24.99 BKF105

When did you launch BlackCraft? Can you give us a mini bio of the brand? Bobby and I started the brand 8 months ago with $100 to invest in blank tees. We wanted to start a company that we were both superpassionate about and believed in. Both of us come from a music and clothing background and we work really well together. The message we want to get through BlackCraft Cult is to believe in yourself. We feel really strongly that there is no god and you don’t need to pick one of the 3000 gods on planet earth to be a good person. We also run this company based on our intuition and feel that it’s really important to listen to that gut feeling, it’s never wrong.

Blackcraft Witchcraft & Black Magic Men's T-Shirt £24.99 BKF106

BlackCraft is a brand taking the world by storm. Its’ occult imagery and monotone allure have captured the eye of many, including Dez Fafara, Megan Massacre to name but a few. Attitude Clothing had the pleasure of meeting up with the overlords of Viking Metal, Amon Amarth for a chat ahead of the release of their ninth studio album - Deceivers of the Gods. We grabbed a beer with vocalist Johan Hegg, and guitarist Olavi Mikkonen in the bar of a very nice hotel in West London to talk about everything from Norse mythology to the pairs favourite battle weapons. Be sure to check out our video of this most heavy of metal meetings online for all the gory details.

At Attitude we love Amon Amarth because not many bands can claim their ninth album as the most powerful, dynamic, and downright aggressive of their career. Having exploded onto the Swedish melodic death metal scene with 1998’s Once Sent From The Golden Hall, every album has arrived bursting at the seams with power, melody and immersive storytelling centred around the richness of Norse mythology. Deceiver of the Gods captures the quintet at the peak of their powers. “Everytime we start working on new music we begin with the idea that we’re going to write the best album ever,” vocalist Johan Hegg states. “We knew we wanted a more aggressive, live feeling to this record but there’s no formula

behind what we do. We just try to write something that takes us a step further than the last record, and is something that will excite us and our fans. Deceiver of the Gods is the result.” With 2013 marking Amon Amarth’s twenty-first year, as well as the fifteenth anniversary of their debut full-length, their longevity and reputation for releasing killer album after killer album places them on a similar trajectory to the likes of Slayer and Cannibal Corpse, which is rarified company to be in. Likewise, having seen many younger faces flocking to their shows alongside their longtime faithful, the band are enjoying themselves now as much as they ever have, and Hegg wouldn’t have it any other way. “It feels fantastic that we’ve been able to do this for so long and managed to get this far, and it’s been a hell of a ride. I don’t think we’ve yet reached the limit of how far the band can go, and we still have plenty of aspirations - and opening for Iron Maiden one day remains high on the list! I’m just happy as long as we can continue doing this. I try not to lose myself in dreams of what might be and rather focus on where we’re at and what we’re doing right now, and having as much fun along the way as we can.” Check out www.youtube.com/attitudeclothing for our full interview.

TOLLING 13 KNELL The essential lyric-key, with which the album is made, is based on some vibrational/musical trends that are developed in an esoteric-line, thus there’s a musical support to the lyric description and to the text’s visualization. The present album is not a concept, each piece being a single chapter.

Recorded at StopMusicStudio (Italy) in August 2000 Mixed at Massive Arts Milano by Ivo Grasso Remastered: Authoma Studios (Italy) in February 2013 by Federico Pennazzato Music and Lyrics by Mortuary Drape (WP) Guests: Joe F. (vox) and Daniele (keys) Cultus Sanguine Photos by Roby Novello Layout by Wild Prod. (Italy)

The method used for the composition is the following: Descriptive: description of the lyrics by sounds and harmonizations able to be closed to the text. Riffing: such as to look for the riff or the right chord for the said description. Inspirational: sometimes the lyrics “arrive” spontaneously and instinctively, they are “heard”, such as the auditory senses heard the sounds (for ex. See “Laylah”, “Not still born” and “Vertical”). Because of this theory based on the sound-vibratory power of the music, the band chooses a title able to express his aim: “TOLLING 13 KNELL”. In this title there’s: The action of playing (tolling) The instrument that gives out the vibration (the bell) The “13” stands for the 13th year, 1999 (from 1986 when the band was founded), in which the album was conceived. The “knell” is a clear reference to what has always been an important search of concept linked to the sense of occult in death, of the astral world and necromancy.
