The Culture of Stones Omi is also famous for its many examples in the stone-carving arts. Even the written characters meaning ‘rock’ and ‘stone’ in Japanese are used in many of the place-names as well as in the names of temples and shrines. It is because the land in this area has always had superior stone carvings that talk of Omi as being the land of stone-material production had come about. In among the mountains there still remain gigantic pedestals made of rock upon which enormous sculptures once stood as well as stone huts from the varying-sized ancient burial mounds. he who controls Omi commands the world. During the Edo Period (1603-1867), the circuits connecting Kyoto and Edo, the Tokaido and the Nakasendo; the Hokkoku Kaido leading to Echizen; the Western Omi Road going north along the west bank of Lake Biwa and leading to Tsuruga; the Shiotsu Kaido linking Tsuruga and Kohoku Shiotsu; the Wakasa Kaido (Saba Kaido), which created for the purpose of carrying marine products harvested from Wakasa Bay from the Middle Ages to the capital; and other routes as well were maintained to display the prosperous activity in each and every post station along these roads. It is because of the remaining streets and towns painted in so much tradition and history that still even today all of the areas of Omi are overflowing with varied highlighted places of interest. These places include the UNESCO World Heritage site at Mt. Hiei and wonderful national treasures of Japan such as: Hikone Castle, original and creative museums, and ninja village, just to name a few. The Kohoku and Kosei regions have an abundance of nature remaining from the ancient times and, in the colder months, the beautiful snow-covered winterscapes become a paradise for migratory birds like the tundra swan. to the top. Up at the summit sits the ancient temple, the time-honored Kannonshoji Temple. Omi is also known for its many famous castles. Near the summit you will find the ruins of the main castle the Sasaki clan used in its 400-year long reign of Omi. The castle was destroyed by Oda Nobunaga (one of famous warlords, 1534-1582), but an undamaged stone wall still remains. Hikone Castle is the only castle in this area that still remains in its complete form but just by looking at the stone wall at the ruins of Azuchi Castle, one can conjure up an idea of what a magnificent site it must have been back in its day. Then there is Sakamoto at the base of Mt. Hiei, known as a town with beautiful stone walls remaining from days of yore.

Well then, without delay, let’s take a little journey through Shiga. Otsu It is only 10 km (6.2 miles) from Kyoto to Otsu, the southeast region of Lake Biwa. Since ancient times even aristocrats have enjoyed the natural beauty of the four seasons of this lake country. With many merchants and post stations, each place has taken in the various cultures of those who passed through thus creating a very unique and open atmosphere. Rising 848 m (2,782 feet) high above sea level on the border between Kyoto and Shiga stands Mt. Hiei. From up near the summit you have an extraordinary view on either side with Lake Biwa on the one and Kyoto city on the other. The mountain mostly belongs to the Enryaku-ji Temple. Mt. Hiei Enryaku-ji Temple was founded on the mountain top by a man named Saicho about 1,200 years ago and is divided into 3 large areas: Todo, Saito, and Yokawa. Todo is the main area with the Konponchudo Temple, a national treasure, as well as the Daikodo auditorium and other important temple buildings. The oldest structure within the grounds is Shakado and can be found in the Saito area. Yokawa is

an area rich in nature and is where Shinran, Nichiren, and other noted monks carried out their pursuits of knowledge. This whole temple is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site and there is a shuttle bus that loops through the complex should you get tired of walking. If you decide to spend the night at the Enryakuji Kaikan assembly hall, you will be able to join in the 6:30am morning prayers. Within the eastern base region of the mountain is Sakamoto, a prosperous town originally built around Enryaku-ji. There is a beautiful, solid rock wall called “Anoshu-zumi,” of which similar style walls can be seen at other places such as Shigainmonzeki and Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine. There are a great many venerable ancient temples in Shiga Prefecture. For example, Miidera (Enjou-ji) was established in year 686. On the extensive grounds you will find the national treasure Kondo Main Hall which itself houses over 100 national treasures and other important cultural property. Another temple, Ishiyamadera, is said to have been founded in year 761, and has served as a popular pilgrimage destination from long ago seeing visits from a good many pilgrims. The most famous of visitors, Murasaki Shikibu, author of the Tale of Genji, often visited this temple and is said to have

worked out the plot for her story there. Along with the national treasures of the Tahoto twostoried pagoda and Hondo main hall, there are a number of other national treasures and pieces of important cultural property as well. All over the temple grounds you can see the oddly shaped Wollostonite rocks protruding from the mountain, which is how the temple name was derived (ishiyama means “rock mountain” in Japanese).

Koto – East side of Lake Biwa Omi Hachiman is a castle town that was created in the mid-19th century and, as a key point for economic and distribution markets, sent out many Omi merchants into the world to promote and continue its prosperity. Former residences of wealthy merchants from the Edo Period, the former residence of American architect William Merrell Vories as the Vories Commemorative Museum as well as other Western style architecture from the early Meiji Period (1868-1812), and many other great examples in architecture still remain in this area. White-walled earthen storehouses and old prestigious houses line the canal waterways and the Hachiman-bori Moat. You can tour this waterfront community on a “suigo meguri” boat with one of the 4 companies currently running tours on motorized as well as non-motorized vessels. Within the peaceful rural area of Gokasho, another Omi merchant town, you can see whitewalled and plank board fenced merchant mansions all lined up. The Nakae Jungoro residence, Tonomura Uhee residence, and Tonomura Shigeru residences were built adjacent to each other and you can buy a combined pass to see all three of the merchant homes. A huge pond sits in the middle of the very large garden in the Fujii Hikoshiro residence and there is a path to follow to view the area. Inside the Western style house, the personal collection of Western furniture and miscellaneous articles of Mr. Fujii are on display. In the past, Hikone prospered as a castle town but is now known for its national treasure, Hikone Castle. Then again, nowadays focus tends to be on “Hikonyan.” This character mas-

Omi Merchants In former Edo, if you said ‘merchant,’ you were talking about Omi merchants. These were men with a talent for business who would travel the whole country selling their wares and, with only a little bit of money for capital, would later set up shops in the large cities. As for corporations with roots going back to these Omi merchants, there are the trading companies like Marubeni and Itochu; the department stores Takashimaya and Daimaru; the spinning companies of Toyobo and Nisshinbo; and companies like Nissay, Seibu Group, Yanmar, Wacoal, and others who have come to be the examples representing Japan. Among the many wealthy merchants, most came from Gokasho, Hino, and Omi Hachiman, and many elegantly built homes and facilities of merchant families can still be seen in these towns.

tions of feudal lords from the Ii family served as Shogunate Chief Ministers. On the outside, Hikone Castle remains today just as it was back in the Edo Period and is one of only four preserved castles designated as national treasures (the other three being Inuyama Castle, Aichi, Himeji Castle, Hyogo, and Matsumoto Castle, Nagano). On the south side of Hikone Castle you can find Yume Kyobashi Castle Road, a redesigned street where the buildings look like those from the original castle town with white walls, blackened gable roofs, and black latticework. Nearby Yonbancho Square is a shopping area with stores and houses recreated in an attractive gas-lamp lit Taisho-era style. In 1937 the school building and auditorium of Toyosato Elementary School in Toyosato-cho town was first commissioned to be designed by Vories, then constructed, and finally donated all by Furukawa Tetsujiro, a graduate of the school himself who had gone on to become the managing director of Ito-Chuubee-Shoten (which would be the predecessor of the Itochu Corporation and Marubeni Corporation). A majestic structure back in those days, it is still definitely worth taking a look at and, as a matter of fact, on May 30, 2009, it was given a fresh new start as the town’s facilities for education and welfare.

In Koka, at the southern tip of Shiga Prefecture, is one of the two main ninja areas, the famous School of Koga ninja village. Iga City of neighboring Mie Prefecture, the second main area, was the birthplace of the School of Iga ninjutsu and both areas once had a large number of ninja houses. At these facilities, it is considered that while ninja performed their daily training, they served the daimyo and feudal lords through acts like stealth surveillance and assassination. Here at Koga Ninja Village you can adorn the garb of the ninja and experience ninja training for yourself. You can also try the different hidden mechanisms in the houses, things like hidden doors, pull-down staircases, and other stuff from scenes you have read in comics and seen on television. The western part of Koka City is Shigaraki, known for its ceramic and porcelain wares, especially the tanuki raccoon dog. The Miho Museum with its ancient works of art is a famous art museum also in this area. The museum, designed by the same designer of the Louvre pyramid, I. M. Pei, was made to feel like an ancient

Integrated into the surrounding landscape and buried in the thick mist of the deep mountain valleys, this mostly underground piece of art in itself attracts numerous visitors from foreign countries as well. Another museum built well incorporated into the surrounding mountain landscape is the Sagawa Art Museum. In the image of Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, this modern building feels as though it is floating on a water garden. The modern tea house was created in 2007 and is definitely worth visiting. The tea house is open every week on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and national holidays (except for the first and third Friday of each month when it is closed) but advanced reservation is always required. These reservations can be made by telephone only, at least one month in advance.

Kohoku – North side of Lake Biwa With grand dreams the warring state military commanders faced off on this land. Reminders of this are all over the place as in scarred battlefields where the fate of the whole land was influenced or in the various temples remembered in connection with the warring daimyo feudal lords. However, around the skirt of the mountain the peaceful country expands out and is dotted with villages that lie unaffected by the strife. The first territory Hashiba Hideyoshi (later known as Toyotomi Hideyoshi) received from Lord Nobunaga was Nagahama. With the construction of Nagahama Castle and the policy of free markets and open guilds, commerce started to develop. At one time the castle was abandoned in the Edo Period but the influence of Nagahama continued as a post station and as

a hub for trade and commerce. The old blackwalled houses remaining along the Hokkoku Kaido are currently getting a second life as a shopping district called Kurokabe Square, which means “black wall” square in Japanese. One such shop makes use of a former bank building constructed in 1900, the Kurokabe Glass Museum, where glass products are on display and for sale. There are various other shops as well, such as the Hikiyama Museum (floats used in festivals) and the Kaiyodo Figure Museum (toy figures).

各樣的商店林立。琵琶湖最裡面是浮在湖面、圓周長為2公里的竹生島。登上多達165階的石階，斜坡是都久夫須麻神社和寶嚴寺。自古信奉為西國33所名剎，現為琵琶湖八景之一。湖北曾以海拔923公尺的己高山為中心，發揚獨特的佛教文化。歷經多次戰亂及政局變化，留下許多佛像，其中大部分是當地人不管宗教派別，努力保存下來的。木之本町的己高閣與世代閣裡，安置許多和己高山有淵源的佛像。井上靖（1907-1991）和水上勉（1919～2004）的小說裡也有描寫到湖北的十一面觀音。廣為人知的是位於高月町的向源寺（渡岸寺）。祂是於西元736年製作，身體稍為扭腰並佩戴耳飾，呈現出印度及西域的風格。據說，在全國7尊國寶級的十一面觀音像之中，最為美麗。相傳在戰國時代，寺院倒閉荒廢之際，村人還將其埋入土中加以保護呢！西野藥師觀音堂的十一面觀音像設於平安時代（8-12世紀）初期，胸部及大腿結實有力，看起來相當穩重安定。石道寺的十一面觀音，至今嘴唇上還留有口紅，容貌秀麗，是國家重要文化遺產之一。木之本曾為北國街道的驛站而繁榮，現在還有舊式宅院林立的街道。據說，淨信寺（木之本地藏院）對於祈求眼疾康復特別靈驗。如果想參拜各處的佛像，可租借腳踏車前往。只要在北琵琶湖圈內的最近車站歸還。登山健行也是一大樂趣，秋天的紅葉相當漂亮。織田信長死後，想要爭奪霸權的豐臣秀吉與柴田勝家（1522?-1583），於西元 1583年曾在賤岳開戰，現在此地可搭纜車前往山頂附近，再從山頂一覽琵琶湖的風光。關原以前是中山道的交通樞紐，現今為新幹線經過的要道。西元1600年重要的關原合戰也是在此地發生，德川家康（江戶幕府首任將軍）因此掌握天下大權。當地清澈的泉水及自然豐富，孕育出滋賀第一高峰－

Floating on the water in Lake Biwa is an island with a circumference of 2 km (1.24 miles) called Chikubushima. If you climb all 165 steps of the rock staircase, you will find Tsukubusuma Shrine (Chikubushima Shrine) and Hogon-ji Temple built as if they were clinging to the slanting surface of the mountain. For a very long time this temple has gained the faith of many travelers as an important stop on the 33-site Saigoku (Western Japan) Kannon Pilgrimage and is counted as one of the 8 most beautiful scenes of Lake Biwa. At one time, a distinctive Buddhist culture flourished in Kohoku with Mt. Kodakami, a mountain 923 m (3,028 feet) above sea level, at its center. Outlasting the many wars and political turmoil, many images of Buddha are still remaining on the mountain. through the generations have wanted to protect and pass the precious pieces down to future generations just where they stand. There are, however, a number of pieces with a connection to Mt. Kodakami enshrined at Kokoukaku and Yoshirokaku in Kinomoto-cho. Images of the Bodhisattva of Compassion (eleven-faced Kannon) in Kohoku are portrayed in novels by Inoue Yasushi (1907-1991) and by Mizukami Tsutomu (1919-2004). Particularly known is one created in year 736 and kept by the Kogen-ji (Dogan-ji) Temple in Takatsukicho town. This statue, adorned with earrings and having the body slightly turned at the waist, conveys the style and manner of India and western China. It is said to be the most beautiful image of the eleven-faced Kannon out of the 7 national treasures of its kind within Japan and loved so much that even back when all temples were on the verge of being wiped out during the warring states period, village people buried their beloved Bodhisattva in the earth to protect it, saving it from destruction. The eleven-faced Kannon image at the Nishino Yakushi Kannon-do is from the early Heian Period (the 8th-12th century). A solemn, steady sense of comfort can be seen in this statue with the chubbiness of the body, notably the chest and thighs. As for the eleven-faced Kannon image at Shakudo-ji Temple, even now some of the red coloring remains on the lips and makes for a very elegant face. Both statues are designated as important cultural property. Old houses still remain lining the streets in the prosperous Hokkoku Kaido post station of Kinomoto. Joshin-ji Temple (Kinomoto Jizo-in) is said to offer the grace of healing for those with eye problems and there are many other interesting places to see as well in the town. It may be a good idea to make use of the rental bicycles and go around touring the various Buddhist statues. You can drop the bicycle off at the station nearest you anywhere within the northern Lake Biwa area and maybe even enjoy some hiking. Historically, an important battle just after the death of Oda Nobunaga, the Battle of Shizugatake, was fought in this area in 1583 as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie (1522?1583) vied for supremacy. Sekigahara, formerly part of the Nakasendo, is now an essential point for the Shinkansen Bullet Train track to run through. In the year 1600, a decisive contest, the Battle of Sekigahara, was fought in this area with the winner, Tokugawa Ieyasu (a founding general of the Edo shogunate), finally grasping real control of the entire land. Today, blessed with pure water wells this area is abundant with nature and also has the highest peak in Shiga Prefecture, Mt. Ibuki at 1,377 m (4,518 feet). In the mountains medicinal plants can be found and in the summer around the summit you can see the heavy growth of the alpine plants in fields of alpine flowers. You can also enjoy activities in nature, such as mountain climbing, paragliding, and skiing. There are many locations of spring water known in Shiga Prefecture and Izumi Shrine is one of these. Many people go to draw water from this spring. Another, the Jizo River, is home to Ito fish and the green sturgeon, both of which can only survive in places with very clean water. This plentiful spring water is also being used to cultivate rainbow trout at the nearby Samegai Trout Farm.

skiing in the Kansai region. There are hiking routes, outdoor leisure facilities, campgrounds, and other fun things set up to be enjoyed as well. The Shirahige Shrine in Takashima is said to have longest history in Omi. In Harie region, the culture of water and water-usage called Kabata remains since a long time ago. The spring water is drawn into the house and into a pond on the premises with the cleanest water being used for drinking and cooking. The grains of rice stuck to the tableware after a meal are fed to carps in the ponds and after the water is purified it is flowed into the town’s river. Every year in early summer small white Baikamo flowers can be seen growing in the Harie-okawa River that flows through the middle of the town. Baikamo can only grow in water that is always clean and at a constant temperature throughout the year, so this is proof that Harie is indeed a town rich in water. Kaizu has prospered as a post station and port town back from times long ago. Tile roof houses with beautiful latticework, shops that are generations old offering practically the only funazushi in Japan, sake breweries, and other relics remaining in this former post station. Makino Pickland is a hands-on experiencestyle agricultural park. Cherries, chestnuts, grapes, and other fruit picking can be enjoyed here. There is also a private place that is rumored to resemble the popular Korean television drama “Winter Sonata.” In the middle of Makino Pickland, there is Metasequoia Avenue, which is a straight row of about 500 Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) trees extending for 2.4 km (1.5 miles). Arihara is a village unchanged and traditional with lines of private homes with thatched roofs. During the winter season, this area sees heavy snowfall and the atmosphere becomes that of a completely secluded, unexplored region.

The Takashima Trail is a walk along the mountain ridge from Makino to Imazu and Kutsuki and spans about 80 km (50 miles). Recently, overhaul of the trail has been making progress. Hiking where you can have a great view of the Sea of Japan and Lake Biwa is very popular.

Lake Biwa Ancient Lakes hold over some hundreds of thousands of years of history and there may be but only 10 in the world. Lake Biwa is one of these such lakes. About 80 different types of freshwater fish, half of the species found in all of Japan, inhabit this lake with more than 10 of those species being found only in Lake Biwa. Occupying an area of 1/6th Shiga Prefecture, the circumference of the lakeshore is around 235km (146 miles). There are luxury cruises from Otsu Harbor and high-speed boats connect all of the ports of Konan, the southern part of the lake. Water-quality study ecology cruises are becoming more and more popular and you can even enjoy various water sports as well.

There stands an old plum tree surrounded by stone stakes in Kongo-ji Temple, a 15-minute walk to southwest from Ome Station. This tree is called “the plum of Masakado’s oath,” and it is believed that the town of Ome was named after this plum. The famous warrior Taira-no-Masakado (903-940) once visited this place. He planted a plum branch that he had used as a whip for his horse, and made a wish: “If my dream should come true, grow big; otherwise, wither away.” The branch took root and became a tree. However, after the summer had passed, the fruits borne on the tree never ripened and remained green on the branches. This is said to be the reason why this area came to be called Ome - green plum. This old tree still exists and bears green plums in the fall. Kongo-ji Temple is also known for its 150-year-old weeping cherry tree.

A one-hour train ride from Shinjuku takes you to Ome, an area filled with excitement that cannot be experienced in central Tokyo.

First, let’s gather information at the tourist information counter, found on the right from the south exit of Ome Station. There you can obtain maps and useful pamphlets. The signboards of classic movies from home and abroad panel the street, evoking the nostalgic ambience of the Showa era (1926-1989). Why not see if you can find your favorite movie, a classic that you enjoyed in the theater years ago? Ome Akatsuka Fujio Kaikan is a museum dedicated to the feat of a cartoonist, Akatsuka Fujio (1935-2008), who created the popular manga, “Tensai Bakabon.” The museum, a five-minute walk from the station, displays many things including pictures drawn by Akatsuka’s own hand. It also sells cute character goods. The adjacent museum, Showa Retro Shohin Hakubutsukan, displays a replica candy shop, as was often seen on streets during the Showa era. There is also the Showa Gento-kan, exhibiting dioramas recreating various Showa scenes, as well as the movie signboards mentioned above. A single ticket for access to all three museums is sold for 700 yen. Ome Tetsudo Koen (Railroad Park) is located on the hill stretching from the north side of Ome Station. Many steam locomotives which once ran throughout Japan are displayed outdoors in the park. In addition, the front carriage of the shinkansen (the bullet train), a symbol of Japanese economic growth, is also on display here - its dynamic form will leave you overwhelmed. Go north for 20 minutes on foot from Higashi Ome Station to arrive at Shiofune Kannon-ji Temple, by way of Fukiage Shobu Koen (Iris Park) where 100,000 irises bloom every June. Shiofune Kannon-ji Temple is a prestigious temple with 1,300 years of history: it is known as a temple that has beautiful seasonal flowers. The most famous flowers here are the azaleas in springtime. Kasumi Kyuryo Shizen Koen (Natural Hill Park) is located on the north side of the temple, where you can enjoy walking through the pine woods. Go further to the north and you will come to Iwakura Onsen-kyo hot spring resort, the origin of a myth of Yamato Takeru (a legendary Japanese prince of the Yamato dynasty). The hot spring is said to make your skin smooth and beautiful. The route from Fukiage Shobu Koen through Shiofune Kannon-ji Temple to Iwakura Onsen makes for one of the best hiking courses. You can enjoy a leisurely soak in the onsen at inns along the way. It might be very refreshing to also visit the baths after hiking.

Storing shelves of fermented sake

Around the area between Mitake Station and Sawai Station, there is a trekking trail along the Tama River parallel with the railroad. Along the trekking trail, there are many tourist spots such as museums. This is one of the best areas for you to enjoy hiking, and you can do so while listening to the babbling of the stream as background music. Gyokudo Art Museum is five minutes walk from Mitake Station. It displays the works of Kawai Gyokudo (1873-1957), who was an honorary citizen of Ome, and a great modern Japanese painter. The scenery of Okutama as painted by Gyokudo are mainly exhibited here. Next, go east along the river through Kanzan-ji Temple and visit Sawanoi Museum of Traditional Japanese Hair Ornaments. The large comb monument hung above the entrance attracts peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention. They exhibit Japanese combs and hair accessories here, collecting approximately 400 items from the Edo era (1603-1867) through to the Showa era. The entrance lobby commands a beautiful view of the Tama River. Ozawa Shuzo is located across the Tama River from the Sawanoi Museum. This longstanding brewer has been brewing sake made with the abundant spring water of Ome for 300 years. You can visit their sake cellars and learn about the brewing process. The temperature of the cellar is kept constant all year round, and it is cool even in summer. Air conditioners do not control the temperature, but the thick walls of the kura (cellar) structure naturally preserve a balanced, even temperature inside. The porcelain-enameled tanks for the brew also stand inside. Although the tanks are not all of the same size, for a typical example is big enough to store a volume of sake that would take 60 years to drink if one drank the appropriate amount every day. You can also see the storing shelves of fermented sake (fermenting of sake is not common), and the well from which a crystal stream gushes out through the rocks. At the end of the inspection tour, you can try tasting the fresh sake. Anyone who has interests in Japanese sake will be happy to drop by here.

Mt. Mitake Trekking and Nature Experience Mt. Mitake is surrounded by magnificent nature. It is amazing that Mitake has such a great, full-scale hiking course even in Metropolitan Tokyo. Seasonal flowers and singing birds welcome visitors to Mitake. Musasabi, Japanese flying squirrels, are sometimes seen here. Mt. Mitake, which stands 929 meters above sea level, has long been worshiped as a spiritual mountain, and there are more than 20 shukubo (lodgings for pilgrims at temples) here today. It is recommended that you stay overnight at one of them, enjoying the heavenly stars and night views. It is convenient to take the cable car when visiting Mt. Mitake. From JR Mitake Station, take a bus to the last stop (Cable-shita stop). Then transfer to the cable car (at Takimoto Station) to climb half way up the mountain. It is very convenient and fast (the ride lasts just 6 minutes) and it travels up the mountain at an average incline of 22 degrees. The higher you go up, the better and wider the scenery appears in front of you. When you get off the cable car at Mitakesan Station, you can take a single lift to the observatory. If you want to walk up ahead, go left and enter through the torii gate. When you head for the direction of the mountaintop, why not drop in at Mitake Visitor Center and collect some information. You can obtain pamphlets describing hiking courses, as well as maps in English. Keep walking through the shukubo lodgings and shops to the top of the mountain. It is about 25 minutes on foot from Mitakesan Station to Musashi Mitake Shrine. Visit and pray to the god in the main building, which has a sacred atmosphere and commands a view of beautiful town scenes. Close to the main shrine building, the treasury museum displays various important items including red armor appointed as a national treasure, and more items designated as important cultural assets. You can find Nanayo-no-Taki Waterfall and Rock Garden. Since more than 100 species of wild birds live here, it is also known as a popular bird-watching site. If you walk west, you can go through to Okutama. However, the roads are very rough and rugged, so you will need special gear for hiking if you wish to continue walking.

Musashi Mitake Shrine

Seasonal events Yoshino Baigo (Plum Village) is the area on the south bank of the Tama River from Hinatawada Station to Futamatao Station, stretching a distance of 4km from east to west. The annual Yoshino Baigo Plum Festival takes place from the end of February through to March 31. This is the largest plum festival in the Kanto (Greater Tokyo) Area and more than 300,000 visitors come here from across Japan. About 25,000 pink and white plum blossoms bloom beautifully, with the fragrance drifting through the air. There are other sightseeing spots such as Ome Kimono Hakubutsukan (Museum) in the neighborhood. Ome Marathon, held every February, has been a pioneer of citizens' marathon meets since 1967. About 15,000 people, from athletes to ordinary citizens, run through the streets in Ome. Welcoming crowds standing along the street to cheer and shout encouragement to the runners.

Hands-on art workshops in Ome Ome is located in the suburbs, far away from central Tokyo, and it is a serene place covered with trees. Many artists have their studios here. They also hold hands-on workshops for crafts such as pottery and glass art, and these workshops are open to the public. Kosoen, the Aizome (Japanese indigo dyeing) studio, has been involved in the dyeing industry since the early Taisho era (1912-1926). The owner renovated an old Japanese farmhouse into a dyeing studio and started to offer hands-on workshops to visitors 20 years ago. Beginners' indigo dyeing classes last one hour (fees apply). You can make your own unique tie-dye handkerchief, which will surely be a good hand-made souvenir. The first vending machine in the world is believed to be a “holy water dispenser” found in a book by Heron, a scientist from Alexandria, Egypt. This was an unprecedented success thanks to its fountain performance and a reasonable price of just 10 yen per paper cup. Later, as companies engaging in the vending machine business appeared and beer companies also entered the vending machine industry, the number of vending machines rapidly increased from 240,000 in 1964 to 1 million in 1970. In 1973, the number exceeded 2 million and by 1984 it had reached 5 million. The number of vending machines in Japan has increased moderately since then.

Why has only Japan’s vending machine industry made such unparalleled achievements when the presence of these machines in other countries is comparatively limited? In other countries, for security reasons, the locations used for vending machines were limited to indoor places such as offices, factories, and schools. Customers who buy products from the machines are, therefore, also limited and specified.

In Japan, however, its low rates of vandalism and petty crime ensured that vending machines could be placed outside. As the number of vending machines increased, the machines came to cater to a larger number of customers. As a result, the number of users expanded. In 1967, 100 yen coins made of silver were recast as cheaper nickel coins. Thanks to this, the number of 100 yen coins in circulation, then about 800 million, increased to approximately 1.6 billion two years later, and now stands at more than 10 billion. This large circulation of coins made it possible for the Japanese to use vending machines more casually and frequently. In the 1970s, a major beverage company created canned coffee and began to sell it through vending machines which could keep drinks either hot or cold. Later, an improved version was produced that could keep hot and cold drinks in the same machine, at the same time. This made it possible with the same machine to sell only cold drinks in spring and summer, then both hot and cold ones in fall and winter. Another reason why vending machines are so popular here is partly because the Japanese feel close to robots. A vending machine can be regarded as a kind of robot that undertakes chores for the benefit of humans. Japanese people have a positive view of robots, which is described in Japanese animation such as Astro Boy and Doraemon. Most Japanese do not mind buying goods or receiving services from robots.

One drink vending machine in Japan has its own lottery: after purchasing your drink, an electric roulette starts. If you win, you can get another drink free of charge. However, because it has not been legislated by law, a small number of the old vending machines - without age verification systems - still remain in the streets. There is another growing concern over the electricity consumption of the machines. Particularly, drink vending machines, which run nonstop 24 hours a day in order to keep drinks hot and cold, have come in for harsh criticism. The vending machine industry has already developed a technology called “zone cooling,” which can quickly and intensively cool down the products to be sold. There has also been a drive to try to cut energy by using automatic lighting systems with sensors, and by reducing the brightness of the lighting. Thanks to such initiatives, in 2005 the industry finally succeeded in cutting the annual electricity usage per vending machine by half, compared with the energy use statistics in 1990.

Take a historic stroll through streets lined with old-fashioned buildings! The cityscape of Sawara Sawara developed greatly as a town for commerce during the Edo period. Along the Ono River there remain the homes of merchants featuring historic architecture dating back more than 100 years, mortar storehouses, and brick structures of western-style architecture. There are also a number of families here that have continued to carry on the family business from the olden days. Inoh Tadataka, who produced a precise map of Japan, was born in the present-day Kujukuri-cho, and at the age of 18 he became the adopted son of the Inoh family, a family of brewers in Sawara. The Old Inoh Tadataka Residence features the main building and store where Inoh Tadataka spent some 30 years of his life. A ride on an Ono River tour boat is an elegant way to view the streetscape from the river. There are two large festivals held in Sawara each year, one in summer and the other in autumn. Chiba Prefectural Boso-no-Mura Museum Walk through this streetscape, which recreates streets lined with old-fashioned buildings such as the homes of merchants from the 17th to the 19th centuries, farm houses, and samurai warrior residences and you will feel as though you have gone back in time. Various shops have been recreated, including confectionary shops, tea shops, book shops, and restaurants, and there is even a rice paddy. Do not just view the exhibitions, please experience the various menu of things to do and see. At the pottery shop, for example, you can experience ceramic arts, while at the restaurant you can cook rice in a kamodo (cooking pot). At the samurai residences you can try on some armor. There are activities that require reservation in advance, as well as those that you can register for that day. A temple where you can feel 1000 years of history! Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple Narita, the home of Narita International Airport, originally developed as a temple town of Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple. Shinsho-ji Temple was founded in the year 940. There is an approach of about 800 meters from the Narita Station to the temple gate. The Niomon gate, Gakudo hall, Shakado hall, three-storied pagoda, and Komyodo hall are all structures that display the architecture of the Edo period and they have been designated as important national cultural properties. The Fudo Myoo (a Buddhist divinity) is enshrined in the Daihondo hall and prayer services are held there. The Narita Gion Festival is held each year around the beginning of July, and includes the parading of portable shrines, floats, and the setting up of numerous stalls for food and such. Enjoy either by hiking or by ropeway! Nokogiri-yama (Mount Nokogiri) Mount Nokogiri (meaning "saw mountain"), is 329 meters above sea level, and has a steep ridge line. There is a hiking course or you can take the ropeway for easy access to the peak. The view from the peak observatory is superb with a look over the precipitous cliff Jigoku Nozoki (peering into hell) being a thrill that will make your feet slip and knees weak. Nihon-ji Temple, whose precincts cover the entire mountain, features an approach that is 4-km long with 2,639 stone steps, and offers access to a huge stone Buddha and statues of the goddess of mercy. Here you will find the huge Daibutsu, which boasts of being the highest magaibutsu (Buddhist image carved into the surface of natural rock) in Japan, as well as numerous other images of Buddha, including 1,553 stone images of Buddha carved into the rock. An abundance of beautiful nature spreads wide across this small country but is often passed over for touring around the history-laden Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples to shopping in the super-modern cities. The whole adventure lasted 3 hours but was packed with thrills Canyoning (or canyoneering)… It sounds like a word we’ve heard somewhere before... Anyway, it was with this casual passing acquaintance with the whole notion that we set out to give it a try. At first, things seemed quite serious once we were all wrapped up in a few layers of wetsuits, but that anxiety would later slip away when we plunged into the waterfall basin. 溪降運動…「這個名詞好像在哪裡聽過耶」我們滿心狐疑的工作人員就抱著姑且一試的心態進行這次的體驗。隨著被重重包起的防水服所引起的不安情緒，在落入瀑布池水的那一瞬間轉變成無可言語的快感。

First we suited up in layers of wetsuits and shirts and donned the appropriate shoes, gloves, and helmets. Next came the yellow lifejackets that our lives would be entrusted to. These were a bit tight on the chest and the pressure gave me an idea of what it might feel like to be a robot. After we were all geared up, there were shrieks from the participants as the guide duly noted, “The water might be a bit cold today.” 身著好幾層防水服及衣衫，再戴上安全帽、穿上防滑鞋然後再戴上手套後，再穿上保護生命的黃色救生衣，胸部感覺有點壓迫感，好像自己變成了機器人的感覺。「今天的水也許有些冰涼」嚮導的這番話引起參加者一陣軒然。

The boat rocked as we headed out to our start point. The water was crystal clear with a gentle current but with all of the trees grown in thickly, you couldn’t see where the water flow started. The guide briefed us on some points of caution as we entered the water up to about our knees. We proceeded into the trees in a single-file line of 6 people while paying attention to the rocky ground at our feet.

Right about the time we were deep in the surrounding trees the guide instructed, “Float your body on the water,” and so we did. With our backs in the water and heads up to the sky, we could see the clouds gently rolling by. Slowly swaying in the water gave the very comfortable sensation of your body being carried away just like the clouds above. Now, there was a moment of slight panic when I felt some water come into my suit, but it is a WETsuit after all, and I quickly became accustomed to this new feeling as well. I went on floating and floating until I noticed that I had stopped as my body had run aground on a rock. It was very relaxing.

從防水服的縫隙跑進來的水讓人感到瞬間沁涼，不過馬上就會習慣了。一不留神身體還會飄浮到岩塊上給卡住了呢。

We did things like burying our faces in the curtain of water formed by the water flowing over a drop and just enjoyed the time. We formed a circle by holding hands and, being carried by the current, finally arrived at the source of the reverberating roaring sound of the 20m-high (65ft) waterfall. I thought, “No way, we’re not going down this, are we?” but my hunch was right on the money. Up at the top, a rope was connected to me and I was lowered down the waterfall until about halfway down. I could feel the roar of the waterfall and sheets of spray at my back. I prepared myself for what was to come and waited. The tautness of the rope went slack and for a moment my whole body felt liberated. My feet came upon the water in no time and before I knew it I was already underwater! Drained of all my energy I floated to the surface. After gazing around the waterfall basin, I turned my body up to the sky and took a deep breath. Ah, what a great feeling! 有時把自己的臉埋入水流落差處所形成一片水簾裡，有時大家手牽手成為一個圓圈圈順著水流，不知不覺中就到了水聲轟隆作響，高達20公尺的瀑布了。心想，該不會從這麼高的地方掉下去吧? 果然不出所料，結果從上面綁著繩索，被放到瀑布中腹。背後可以感受到瀑布的轟隆聲及水花濺灑，而心裡已做好準備等待那一刻的來臨。繩索的另一端一放的瞬間，以為自己可以解脫了，結果「啊!」的一聲之下感覺腳下有水，接著就進入了水裡! 在無力狀態下身體漂浮出了水面。一邊眺望著瀑布池，身體朝著天空深深地呼吸著新鮮空氣…真的好舒服!

We continued the course, crossing through the rock jump and yielding our bodies to the washing machine-like whirlpool. Pressing forward we experienced the early summer fresh greenness, occasionally popping our heads up to the beautiful sky, and the sounds and smells of clear babbling brooks. We arrived at the second large waterfall of the day and, to my surprise, this time the instruction was, “Please slide down head-first.” So, while looking up to the sky, my body was suddenly sucked in by the water and down into the waterfall I went. 有時用跳的越過岩石處，有時將身體交給像是洗衣機一般的漩渦中地邊向前進。眺望著初夏的新綠及偶而會露臉的天空，傾聽著潺潺溪流聲，感受清澈流水的氣息，就到了今天的第二個大瀑布。居然這次叫我們大家「請從頭部向下滑落」。仰望著天空，接下來身體已經不由自主地被吸入瀑布水池中了。

The whole adventure lasted 3 hours but was packed with thrills and though we only traversed about 300 meters (about 1/5 mile), I was unbelievably overflowing with satisfaction. I still can’t forget the feeling of challenging the water and frolicking in the water sprays. It looks like I’ll always have at least one plan for subsequent future summer vacations ready to look forward to. 共約3小時的冒險旅程，以距離來算的話大概只有300公尺左右，不過充滿了超出您的想像的刺激及滿足。挑戰水流，與飛濺的水花嬉戲的那種感覺，讓人念念不忘。今年暑假一定還要再去一次!

The next day we went whitewater rafting. Our 8-person group piled in the raft and we went down the raging rapids of the Tone River. This is nothing less than nature’s version of a roller coaster. You get a great sense of teamwork and belonging by joining forces with your fellow raft group members and paddling with all of your might. All of the water splashing around feels nice on a hot day and even though I totally fell into (or was maybe pushed into??) the mighty river, it still made for great memories. 隔天則體驗泛舟活動。8人一組搭乘一艘小艇，在利根川進行激流泛舟，就好像坐上了天然的雲霄飛車一樣刺激。大家同心協力地搖槳所感受到的向心力感覺很棒。四處飛濺的水花在炎炎夏日裡反而覺得很舒服，執筆的工作人員還不小心掉落水裡(還是被甩落的?)，也算是種難忘的回憶。

Ito Onsen

to Onsen, located on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula, is one of the most popular hot springs in the Izu area, and is proud of its abundant flow of spring water and fresh seafood dishes. Ito is also an attractive resort because of the balance between its highlands and the sea, as well as its famous onsen. Izu Kogen Highlands have many unique museums. Why not visit one of them and appreciate the fine arts on display? Jogasaki Coast commands a breathtaking view of the steep cliffs, the deep blue sea, and a view of the Izu Seven Islands on the horizon. If you take a chairlift to the top of Mt. Omuro, which looks like an upside-down bowl, you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of Sagami Bay. Lake Ippeki’s emeraldcolored water reflects images of the surrounding mountains of Amagi. How to bathe in an Onsen ///////////// 溫泉入浴方法 You’ve finally made it to the hot spring. But how do you go about making use of it? Above all, you should never forget to observe the manners and etiquette needed throughout. Here are some important rules to guide you through your first onsen experience a primer to the laws of the onsen:

up to your waist, followed by chest, then neck. In doing so your body will slowly get used to the water temperature. Do not put the towel into the water. You may see people fold and put it on their heads, now you know why - it doesn’t belong in the water. You may also put it on the side of the tub.

First of all you will have to completely undress. Clothes are to be taken off in the dressing room (known as the datsui-jo in Japanese). Other than your birthday suit, you may bring one small towel or washcloth to the bathing area for washing with. Do not make the mistake of changing into and going in your bathing suit! It is not allowed.

Once in the bathing area, rinse off with hot water before getting into the onsen. At some places there will be a stone tub by the entrance, at others you may be able to wash with soap, bucket and using a tap, and at other you will have to take the water directly from the onsen itself (In Japanese this is called kakeh-yu). Kakeh-yu can be done with a small bowl or bucket (sometimes with a handle). Hot water is drawn from the tub or tap and poured over the entire body to rinse thoroughly. This is considered one of the most important points of onsen manners. After you have completely rinsed, it’s time to get into the hot tub. It’s best to get in slowly at first. Get in slowly up to your knees, then

Where tap and washing stalls are available, switching from wash stall to tub and back is up to you. Do so at will. Never bring the soap or suds into the tub!

Some hot springs provide more than one tub, such as the rotenburo (outdoor onsen). Switching from bath to bath may also be done freely.

Once out of the onsen, dry off with a towel. Taking a nap is effective; bathing in a hotspring takes quite some physical energy.

When your body is hot and you are totally relaxed, taking a shower is entirely up to you, although may be a waste of the onsen’s mineral healing properties. Leaving them to soak in may be better for your skin.

入浴時間以一次十分鐘為適當。因為含有礦物質，適當的入浴時間不但可以放鬆而且還可以吸收礦物質。一天的入浴次數以2-3次為佳。

如果有盥洗的地方，來回於溫泉池和盥洗的地方幾次也是不錯的。＃請不要將肥皂帶入溫泉池內。

從溫泉池出來用毛巾把身體擦乾。睡個午覺對身體也很好。溫泉有恢復體力的效果。

像露天溫泉〈戶外的溫泉〉等，有的有好幾個溫泉池。可以自由來回使用。足夠暖和又覺得輕鬆後就起來吧！因為溫泉的礦物質殘留在身體上，沖不沖澡依個人喜好。

any of the first events and happenings to occur in Japan occurred in Yokohama.

Japan’s first modern western-style horse race was held in Yokohama. The Yokohama Horse Racetrack, located on a hill near JR Negishi Station, was constructed for foreign residents living in Yokohama as a recreational facility in 1866, and a horse race was first held there the following year. The place is also referred to as “Negishi Horse Racetrack,” after the name of the area. The facility was closed in 1942, and the site has since become Negishi Forest Park, where citizens can relax. The Horse Museum, which exhibits materials on horse racing and the equestrian arts, is open in the park. This place is regarded as one of the most famous parks to see, comparable to Yamashita Park and Harbor View Park (Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen). Since it is located on a hill, it commands a view of Minato Mirai District and even Mt. Fuji on fine days. The gentle lawn field in the park is very popular, and is visited by many people in spring as it is one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Honmoku Area is located 2 km east of Negishi Forest Park. Mycal Honmoku is a shopping complex that includes fashionable clothing shops, sports shops, restaurants, and a movie theater. This mall carries different styles of goods and clothing from the neighboring Motomachi area. The Honmoku area was once a site of a U. S. military base, and somehow it retains the atmosphere of the West Coast of the United States. Go a little further and you will come to Sankeien Garden. Sankeien was built and owned by Hara Tomitaro, a Yokohama businessman who succeeded in the silk export business. Some valuable historic structures were moved from Kyoto and Kamakura and rebuilt there. Many people visit Sankeien Garden to enjoy the seasonal flowers as they bloom beautifully in the vast, Japanese-style garden of 175,000 square meters. 在橫濱是有很多「日本首次」的，各種最初的東西。

小鯵の南蛮漬 Koaji no Nambanzuke

Deep-fried small mackerel marinated in seasoned vinegar

Ingredients (serves 4) 16 small mackerel (koaji) *8 cm (3 inches) to 10 cm (4 inches) long 50 g (0.1 lb) flour 1 red pepper 1 cup of vinegar

4 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 onion (tamanegi) 2.5 cups salad oil

att. Recipe

1. Mix vinegar, sugar, soy sauce. Remove the seed of red pepper, cut it into 1 mm (0.04 inch) -thick rounds.

2. Cut the onion in half and cut them into 1 mm (0.04 inch) -thick slices.

4. Coat the fish in the flour.

3. Remove the Zeigo, clean and wash the fish. (Zeigo are scales located near the tail.)

5. Heat the oil to 180 degrees C. Deep fry the fish in the oil.

6. Leave the deep-fried fish in the marinade. Add the onion and red pepper. Let it cool until the fish is well soaked. Cooling in a refrigerator increases the dish’s taste.

Rail Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere -- the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

Japan Rail Pass Japan Rail Pass allows you to use the whole JR system (including the Shinkansen) but is only sold outside Japan. 28,300 yen gets you a full 7 day ticket (adults). For more info, check the Japan Rail Pass website: http://japanrailpass.net

Bus Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

Tourist Information

Taxis Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers.
