2010 Hakodate Christmas Fantasy

December 1 (Wed)-25 (Sat), 2010 Hakodate Christmas Fantasy started in 1998, and every year a huge, imposing fir tree presented from Halifax, Canada, the sister city of Hakodate, is decorated with about 50,000 decorative lights and on display in the bay area of Hakodate. During the event, every day a tree-lighting ceremony is held at 6 p.m. and fireworks are set off. The Christmas illuminations and fireworks create a fantastic atmosphere, as do the white night views only available in winter. Come and enjoy Fantastic Hakodate! For more details, see http://www.hakodatexmas.com/ (Japanese version only) http://www.att-japan.net/hakodate/

ith the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen Line directly from Tokyo to Aomori on December 4, 2010, visiting the Aomori area has become easier and faster: only 3 hours and 20 minutes. The picturesque scenery in each season, fine onsen hot springs, fresh seafood and other delicious delicacies, and traditional festivals make Aomori an alluring spot to visit, and also recently the home of nice art museums.

Towada / Lake Towada / Oirase / Hakkoda Breathtaking scenery can be seen from a boat on Lake Towada or from a lakeside observatory deck. The red and yellow autumn leaves are excellent, but the mysterious scenery of winter is also recommended. Oirase Keiryu Stream is a 14-km stream from the lake at Nenokuchi; the gap between the highest and lowest points in the stream is about 200 meters and is dotted with picturesque spots. Strolling around this area is delightful, especially the view of fresh, green spring leaves and the colorful leaves of autumn. Hakkoda-san is the general name for the northern and southern Hakkoda mountain ranges. The highest peak is 1,584 meters above sea level. There are many moors and alpine plants and the ropeway ride provides a splendid view of the moors and mountains. The skiing is great at Hakkoda Ski Resort, which has a

Aomori The southern gateway of Aomori is Hachinohe. At Hasshoku Center, fresh seafood from Hachinohe Port, dry seafood, and rare local foods of Hachinohe are available. You can buy seafood and use the charcoal grills to cook it at the center. About 400 shops open early in the morning every Sunday at Minato Sunday Asaichi, one of the largest morning markets in Hachinohe. Umi no Asaichi is another morning market where, at some shops, you can eat the fresh seafood on site. (Note the markets are closed from December to early March.) dynamic super-long course among the natural geographical features such as juhyo (trees covered with hoarfrost) and moguls from midDecember to mid-May. Walking tours among the beautiful juhyo trees are held, and a path between 9-meter-high snow walls is open for three days in late March as part of a winter event. Tsuta Onsen is surrounded by tall beech trees and is the only hot springs ryokan (Japanese style hotel). The bath is just above the spring source and hot water springs directly into the bath without the use of pipes. Sukayu Onsen is the oldest hot springs at Hakkoda Onsen and its huge co-ed bath, Sennin Buro or 1,000-person bath, is famous. Ranpu no Yado (Lamp Hotel) at Aoni Onsen is a quiet, remote hot springs

resort, located in the mountains and uses only kerosene lamps at night. The pop museum Towada Art Center on Kanchogai Street is constructed of different sizes of white boxes connected by glass corridors and was designed by the famous young architect Ryue Nishizawa. The entire length of Kanchogai Street resembles an open-air museum with the colorful works of Yayoi Kusama and others exhibited along the street.

Aomori Sannai-Maruyama is one of the largest sites of the Jomon period (about 5,500-4,000 years ago) in Japan. Aomori Museum of Art, next to the site, was designed by Jun Aoki. “Aomori-Ken,”

an 8.5-meter tall dog statue calmly meditating, is a must-see. The exhibit of Studio Ghibli’s Layout is being held from October 9, 2010, through January 10, 2011, and an exhibition commemorating the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen Line is slated to take place from December 4, 2010, through March 21, 2011. At Nebuta no Sato Nebuta Kaikan in Aomori Shizen Park, eight nebutas (gigantic lanterns carried on a float) are always on display. Visitors can enjoy a simulation of the Nebuta Festival and experience the making of the papier-mache nebuta. Near Aomori Station, a cultural and tourism facility called “Nebuta no Ie - Warasse” is scheduled to open in January 2011, so everyone can experience the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri

festival throughout the year. One of the popular foods at Furukawa Market near Aomori Station is “Nokke-Don.” For this dish, you buy a bowl of rice for 100 yen and then buy your favorites toppings such as sashimi or salmon roe at the various shops. It is a very popular system for eating fresh seafood inexpensively. Local seafood is also available at the fresh market of AugA in front of Aomori Station. Aspam has an observatory deck and local products are available at the shops. Asamushi Onsen is a hot springs resort that retains an atmosphere of onsen town of good olden days. If you have time, why not go even farther north? In a few hours on the Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry, you will reach Hakodate in Hokkaido.

Hirosaki Hirosaki, a peaceful castle town around Hirosaki Castle, is the place to enjoy walking at a leisurely pace. Zenringai is a town with temples of the Soto Sect of Buddhism. Classic Westernstyle buildings, such as Aomori Bank Memorial Hall and Hirosaki Gakuin Foreign Missionary Hall, are worth visiting. Hirosaki Castle is wellknown for its breathtaking cherry blossoms in late April. Hirosaki is also known for its apples, so why not try an apple pie? You can see large neputa floats and neputa-shaped goods, hear festival music, and experience painting a small fish-shaped neputa at Tsugaruhan Neputa-mura Village. The beautiful, shapely mountain seen from Hirosaki is Mount Iwaki (1,625 meters). It is also called “Tsugaru Fuji” because of its size and beauty. The summit offers a panoramic view of Shirakami mountain range, the Sea of Japan and as far north as Hokkaido. The sunset view

Hirosaki Castle

is also wonderful. Iwakiyama Shrine was built at the foot of the mountain about 1,200 years ago. The huge 22-meter-high two-storied gate, the inner gate and the halls are all interesting.

Kuroishi Seibien in Inakadate Village is one of the three major gardens of the Meiji period (1868-1912) in Japan and now is even more popular since rumored to be in the animated film “The Borrower Arrietty” by Studio Ghibli. Tanbo Art, a huge aerial picture, is created by planting three different colors of rice plants - ancient rice of yellow and purple plants and the current green plant - in a paddy about 145 by 50 meters behind the village office building. You can see the picture from an observatory deck of the building that resembles a castle tower. At Hotel Apple Land at Minamida Onsen, you can take a bath with a number of apples in the water. The aroma of the apples is very relaxing and pleasant.

Goshogawara Goshogawara is well-known for tachineputa, very, very tall festival lanterns. Tachineputa no Yakata displays three tachineputas that are more than 20 meters high. If you visit in winter, a ride on the stove train of Tsugaru Railway is recommended. The nostalgic train with oldfashioned coal-fired stoves makes two runs a day from December to March. Another typical experience in the snow region is walking in the drifting snow dressed in traditional clothes. Strong windows blow the snow upward from the ground, so strong it’s almost blinding.

Shirakami Sanchi Shirakami mountain range was one of the first sites chosen to be a World Heritage site (natural heritage) in Japan together with Yakushima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture. Walking leisurely in the mysterious and natural beech forest, visiting Anmon no Taki Waterfall on the

streamside path (about two hours), and trekking while taking in the panoramic view of the majestic mountains (about four hours) are just a few of the things to do. The Anmom no Taki area includes three separate waterfalls (26, 37 and 42 meters down), and each one is overwhelmingly beautiful. In winter, snow trekking and riding a snowmobile in the beech forest are fun activities.

Koganezaki Furo-Fushi Onsen Koganezaki Furo-Fushi Onsen facing the Sea of Japan is one of the most famous hot springs in the Tohoku region. The sunset view while soaking in an open-air bath is splendid. (Note that bathing around the time of sunset is limited to those who are staying at the hotel.) The JR Gono Line train goes to the Sea of Japan from Aomori Station via Hirosaki and Goshogawara. It is a scenic and restful trip.

Festival Nebuta, or neputa, festivals are one of the most renowned festivals held in summer. The difference in the name is due to the difference of pro-

nunciation in the local dialects. Large and small floats for the festivals are created in about 30 municipalities in Aomori Prefecture. The brightly colored nebuta, or neputa, stand out against the dark sky and the energetic festival music enhances the mood. Aomori Nebuta Festival, one of the three major festivals in Tohoku, is held in Aomori City on August 2-7. This dynamic festival consists of nebuta floats, music, and dancers called haneto. Hirosaki Neputa Festival is held in Hirosaki City on August 1-7. About 60 neputa floats including fan-shaped ones parade in the city. Goshogawara Neputa Festival is held in Goshogawara City on August 4-7, and is another energetic festival in which gigantic tachineputa floats are paraded to lively music and the beating of drums. Hachinohe Sansha Festival is a gorgeous festival of floats that boasts about a 280-year history and tradition; 27 floats are paraded following a portable shrine. It takes place on June 31-August 4. Hachinohe Enburi is a festival to pray for an abundant harvest of the year and is held in Hachinohe City on February 17-20. Dancers wearing elaborate decorations and a

horse head dance, swinging their heads.

Food Aomori Prefecture produces more than half of the total apple production in Japan. Apple picking can be done from September to November. Guaranteed to be delicious, Aomori apples make a good souvenir. Garlic called “White Roppen,” white and of high quality, is also delicious. “Towada Bara-yaki,” a dish of onions and beef ribs cooked with sweet soy sauce soup, is worth trying, and the local sake is quite tasty. Fresh seafood, such as scallops and squid, is also delicious. Oma maguro (tuna) is famous for being caught by pole-and-line fishing, and the plump tuna is superb. “Kaiyakimiso” is scallops and egg seasoned with miso in soup that is cooked in the shell of the scallop. “Jappajiru” is a stew with pieces of cod, daikon radish, and carrots. “Ichigoni” is a splendid dish using sea urchin and abalone. With the new train line, Aomori has become much closer to Tokyo. Visit Aomori and enjoy a variety of vacation activities!

The “Tokyo Game Show 2010” was held at Makuhari Messe, Chiba Prefecture, from September 16-19, 2010. The number of visitors to this year’s TGS exceeded 200,000 - the best attendance figures on record since the event began. The Messe was bustling with visitors of various ages and nationalities. One of the most attention-grabbing exhibits at this year’s event was a special booth showcasing “smart phone games,” which have recently enjoyed great hype and publicity. The sight of visitors playing games by directly touching the screens of smart phones gives evidence of a change in the gaming world and a shift away from the previously dominant formula of “TV/monitor plus console and handheld controller.”

Diversification of Gaming Styles

Tokyo Game Show 2010

With technological innovation at amazing speed, diversification of platforms, changing preferences, etc., “video games” are now at a major turning point. What will be the next game to capture people’s hearts?

Video games have become incredibly popular thanks to the proliferation of arcade games and home video game consoles. Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE)’s PlayStation were born in Japan and spread throughout the world. Portable video game devices, which can be carried around and played anywhere, have since overturned the traditional image of gaming styles where users sit back to play, and these portable games have contributed to the further growth of the video game world.

Video Games - What’s Coming Next?

Home Video Game Consoles Home video game systems have continued to advance, and today there are three hardware devices competing against each other: Nintendo’s Wii, SCE’s PlayStation 3, and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Each of these consoles offers Internet services for online competition or data exchange with other players as well as the purchase and download of games and software programs. Wii has a stick-shaped controller and players play by intuitively waving, swinging and shaking this “remote control.” Upon release, this device completely changed the conventional gaming style of being sat in front of a TV. Some of the most popular Wii software includes titles such as “Wii Sports” and “Wii Fit.” A new release in the “Legend of Zelda” series and the Wii version of “Billy’s Boot Camp” are to be launched in 2011. PlayStation 3 is a multimedia device through which users can play game software of more than 800 titles (including download version), browse the Internet, watch movies (Blu-ray Disc), listen to music, and chat online. A motion controller “PlayStation Move” went on sale in October 2010. PS3 game “Gran Turismo 5,” the latest title in the globally popular racing game series, was released in November 2010. The PS3 version of “Final Fantasy XIV,” which can be played online, is slated to be released in early March, 2011.

A new Xbox 360 accessory, “Kinect,” was released in November 2010. This device has sensors to distinguish the actions and voices of players and reflect these things in the game, which means that players do not need to hold or operate a controller of any kind. Games specifically designed for Kinect will be released in quick succession, including “DanceEvolution,” a rhythm action game from Konami.

Kinza, a mint producing gold coins, was located in Nihonbashi during the Edo period, and now the Bank of Japan is built on exactly the same site. FYI, the famous downtown area called Ginza also used to be a mint but for silver coins. Tokiwabashi-mon was the front gate of the outer moat of Edo Castle, and the stone walls of the gate still remain at the site.

ihonbashi has played an important role as the center of economy and culture in Japan since the Edo Period (1603– 1867). During the Edo Period, the city prospered and was a strategic hub for the Gokaido (the five main arteries) that all starting from Nihonbashi. First-class craftsmen and merchants throughout Japan came to establish their businesses in Nihonbashi and competed for better quality and services. Still today, business people of the leading banks and major companies are seen in the streets, and many shoppers visit the famous department and other well-established stores in Nihonbashi. Recently the area has been redeveloping at a rapid pace. Modern high-rise buildings have been built in Nihonbashi but scenes of the old times remain here and there. Visit Nihonbashi to experience a vital part of Japan’s business culture, not only the new but also the traditional. Let’s begin at Takashimaya Department Store, a symbol of Nihonbashi, a stately, modern structure built in the early 20th century. Yamamotoyama, the tea shop which first produced gyokuro (refined green) tea, has been in business since 1690. At Yamamotoyama, you can sip tasty green tea and try famous sweets of Nihonbashi, such as Nagato’s yokan (bean paste jelly). Haibara is a traditional shop which specializes in washi (Japanese traditional paper). COREDO Nihonbashi is a commercial facility housed in a futuristic, glass-covered building which opened in 2004. The famous Japanese sweet shop Eitaro Sohonpo has been in

Nihonbashi since 1857. The Nihonbashi River Canal was the main canal around Edo (now Tokyo) and there used to be a thriving fish market there. The first Nihonbashi Bridge was completed in 1603, and the current stone bridge was built in 1911. A copperplate marking “an original road of Japan” is embedded in the center of the bridge. Next year will be the 100th anniversary of Nihonbashi Bridge. Mitsukoshi Main Store Nihonbashi, is located north of Nihonbashi Bridge. Mitsukoshi, established in 1673, is Japan’s oldest department store, and was then called “Echigoya,” a kimono fabric shop. Other shops established in Nihonbashi during the Edo Period are Yamamoto Nori Laver Shop established in 1849, Kanmo, a traditional fish-cake shop, and Ibasen, a store selling Japanese uchiwa (fans), sensu (folding fans), and traditional writing materials. Nihonbashi also has shops which sell specialties and souvenirs local to other prefectures. You can buy souvenirs at satellite shops from Nara, Shimane, and Niigata prefectures. Small shops and taverns with the ambience of the good old times are tucked into the narrow alleys behind the big shopping district. Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, built in 2005, contains the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo, and Sembikiya Sohonten, a long-established fruit shop. Sembikiya Fruit Parlor on the 2nd floor is always crowded with customers. The Mitsui Memorial Museum houses Japanese and Oriental works of art which have been collected by the

Mitsui family beginning in the Edo Period more than 300 years ago. COREDO Muromachi and YUITO just opened in October of this year. COREDO Muromachi contains 25 shops including Ninben (a famous shop for bonito flakes) and Kiya (a cutlery specialty shop) to name but a few. Ninben, proud of its 300 year history of dealing in dried bonito, opened a unique bar called the Nihonbashi Dashi Bar. This bar attracts much attention with their delicious soups made with bonito flakes, freshly shaved by professionals. Hakuza Nihonbashi is a famous shop in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, specializing in gold foil, and this is the first branch in Tokyo. It has a small room called "Ougon no Tenku" (Golden Sky) with gilded walls using 16,000 sheets of gold foil. It is a unique experience to be in a room surrounded by gold foil! Ozu Washi is a washi (Japanese traditional paper) wholesale shop with a history of over 350 years. This store also has a museum (free admittance) and offers hands-on washi making workshop (fees and reservations required). The hands-on workshop is about 30 minutes long. Why not give it a try? Near Ozu Washi is Kiriko, a shop selling modern furniture made of kiri (paulownia) wood. More development is expected in Nihonbashi in the future. Check and see what is going on in Nihonbashi because, in 2011, many events are planned to mark the 100th year anniversary of the construction of the current Nihonbashi Bridge.

Nikko 日光 Two shrines and one temple (Furatasan Shrine, Toshogu Shrine, and Rinno-ji Temple) and the surrounding ruins in the “Nikkosannai” area are designated as a Unesco World Heritage site. The area is about five minutes by bus from Nikko Station. The religious architectural structures and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate, are highly valuable treasures. The vermilion-lacquered bridge at the entrance to the area is Shinkyo (Sacred Bridge), a beautiful arched bridge-a fitting entrance to the sacred spot of Nikko. Historically, Nikko Futarasan Shrine was dedicated to Mt. Futara (also known as Mt. Nantai) as its sacred mountain. The 1-km stone path leading to the detached Takinoo Shrine from the back of the main approach goes through the woods and abounds with huge rocks, natural springs and waterfalls. Along the way is the “Undameshi no torii,” a lucky sacred gate, where you can try your luck by throwing pebbles three times through the center hole. The number of the stones that go through the hole will tell you the level of your fortune. Attractions include Nikko Toshogu, the shrine dedicated to Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Yomeimon Gate (Gate of Sunlight) with its over 500 ornate wood carvings in gold and vivid colors, and the ever-charming “three wise monkeys” that symbolize the principle of “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” that every child has heard. Sanbutsudo Hall (Hall of the Three Buddhas) is Rinno-ji’s main building, and houses three large, gold-lacquered statues of the three deities enshrined in the temple: the Senju (thousand-armed) Kannon, the AmidaNyorai Buddha, and the Bato (horse-headed) Kannon. Also in Rinno-ji is Taiyuin, a calm and stately temple with an impressive 315 lanterns standing like a forest on the ground. The mountain area beyond the Irohazaka mountain pass that includes Yumoto Onsen is called “Oku-Nikko,” or outlying Nikko, and has an abundance of natural scenery with lakes, waterfalls, and marshlands. Mt. Nantai is 2,486 meters in height and is a great place for hiking from spring to autumn. Kegon Falls, a waterfall of 97 meters, is one of the most famous falls in Japan. Senjogahara is a highland moor at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level. It was inscribed as a registered wetland under the Ramsar Convention in 2005. Various animals and plants inhabit the marshland, and the alpine plants are particularly beautiful from spring to summer. When it comes to food in Nikko, yuba is a must. In the tofu family but composed of delicate layers of the skin of the boiled soybean milk, yuba was originally a convenient food for Buddhist priests to carry. If you go a little further by train from the World Heritage site, you will come to Kinugawa Onsen, one of the largest hot springs in the Kanto district.

Islands of Art / 藝術島嶼 On Naoshima Island, world famous for art, the harmony of art with nature is intriguing. Architect Tadao Ando designed the Chichu Art Museum, Benesse House, a hotel and a museum, and the Lee Ufan Museum, which opened in 2010. For the Art House Project, old houses on the old streets are exhibited as art works. Inujima Art Project Seirensho (refinery) is one of the works of the Inujima Art Project, which features maintained and reproduced remains of modern industrial "heritages."

This is a unique museum exhibiting Japanese swords. This area was close to a source of the iron sand used to make swords and boasted about the many highly skilled swordsmiths and great amount of sword production. Swords, knives and other forged items can be purchased.

Bizen-yaki is representative of Japanese stoneware pottery. The items are fired at a high temperature of 1,250 °C for 10 to 14 days. The pieces are not glazed or painted but mysterious patterns are created by the fire which makes every piece unique and fascinating.

Winter Resorts in Japan

On January 12, 1911, the sport of skiing was introduced to Japan in Takada Town (now Joetsu City), Niigata Prefecture and so 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the event. Japan now has more than 400 ski and snowboard areas, ranging from areas easily accessible from the big cities for one- or two-day trips or for longer stays to areas with all kinds of slopes and facilities for a snow vacation. Most of the areas can be reached within 2- or 3 hours. Furthermore, ski slopes in Japan are said to be secure because of the strict regulations. Most of all, the snow resorts in Japan offer a variety attractions in addition to skiing, so even those who are not skiing enthusiasts will have a good time. For example, viewing the snow-covered scenery while submerged in a hot tub or eating delicious local food can be a lot of fun. Other activities, such as snowmobiling or snow trekking, and joining a local festival, are sure to be enjoyable. We here introduce major snow resort areas in Japan including some of the extra delights. For more details on ski areas in Japan, see these sites. http://www.snowjapan.com/e/index.php http://www.ski.com.tw/modules/skiresort/region.php?cat_id=51 Transportation information in the text is generally from Tokyo and the fastest travel times.

It’s winter again and that means skiing and playing in the snow. There are various ways to enjoy in snowy fields: skiing, soaking in a hot spring bath, snowmobiling, walking in the snow, and much more.

Hokkaido 北海道

There are many ski resorts such as Furano, Tomamu and Rusutsu that are wider with more facilities than the resorts on the main island of Honshu. Niseko has three major slopes, which each boast a variety of courses and great powder snow, so this area is a paradise for skiers and snow boarders. Many of the staff are English-speaking so you may be relieved to know you can communicate with them. More than 100 restaurants serve crab, scallop and other local fresh delicacies of Hokkaido. After arriving by plane at New Chitose Airport (100 min), the usual way to get to the various ski areas is by a JR train, a bus, or even by taxi.

Tohoku 東北

There are many wonderful places with really great snow even though this area is not as well known as Hokkaido. The ski area in Appi, Iwate Prefecture, is famous for the wide variety of courses to choose from and also the powder snow. Hachimantai is especially recommended for beginners because of its gentle slopes. Crosscountry skiing is very popular in Towada Hachimantai National Park as well. Hotels close to the slopes at all areas are equipped with hot spring baths. Take the JR Shinkansen or a highway bus. Shuttle buses run from JR Morioka Station (150 min by Shinkansen) or Hanamaki Airport (85 min from Osaka) to all of the areas. If you think Yamagata Prefecture, you most likely are thinking Yamagata Zao Onsen with its great courses running through the beautiful snowcovered tree landscape. Open-air baths adjacent to the slopes are available at no charge. For aprés ski entertainment, go to Yamagata City and enjoy a meal at a traditional Japanese restaurant with pretty maiko girls (5800 yen). 40 min by bus from JR Yamagata Station (150 min from Tokyo by Yamagata Shinkansen) Fukushima Prefecture has many skiing facilities and is close to Tokyo. Special ski tours from Korea include a free shuttle bus from Fukushima and Sendai airports. The slopes are blessed with good snow and comfortable skiing. This area also has a lot of hot springs and some good sightseeing. Ice fishing for lake smelt on Lake Hibara in the Inawashiro/Bandai area and the castle town in Aizu are other popular attractions. Shuttle buses from JR stations in Fukushima Prefecture (about 100 min by Tohoku Shinkansen) are readily available.

Conditions vary from year to year but most ski areas are open from around December until the following March. Some places start the fun a bit early (the end of November) and some extend the season if the spring skiing is good until around May. Most ski areas rent the basics (skis, boots, and poles) and many rent skiwear as well. Be sure to bring your own tights and any other undergarments you will need to stay warm. It is better to check in advance if gloves, goggles and other accessories are available for rental as well. Many resorts offer instruction in various snow sports but it is best to make sure beforehand if instructions are available in your language of choice. For beginners, be sure to specifically check for beginner slopes so as not to get in over your head too soon. Many places these days have slopes designed for families. A good way to go to a ski area is by “ski bus.” Tour companies as well as airlines often have special ski packages, promotions and such that are often really good deals.

Joetsu 上越

Niigata Prefecture has a variety of ski areas with very easy access from Tokyo. This is the original ski resort in Japan because it is where Major Theodor von Lerch of the Austria-Hungary military came and taught skiing for the first time in Japan. Everyone, from children who see snow for the first time to skiing veterans, can enjoy the variety of slopes available. Particularly this winter, many events such as one-pole skiing will take place in the Naeba, Yuzawa and Myoko areas to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the introduction of skiing. You will probably see “Reruhi-san,” the yurukyara (character mascot) at the events. After skiing, soak in a hot spring baths while viewing the snow and dine on the local cuisine. The rice from this area is said to be the most delicious in Japan and so the sake (rice wine) is also delicious. Naeba, Yuzawa, Uonuma areas: The Joetsu Shinkansen to GALA Yuzawa Station (80 min) is direct to the GALA Yuzawa resort. Other ski resorts are easily accessible by bus from Echigo-Yuzawa Station (76 min). Myoko: By bus from JR Nagano Station (100 min by Nagano Shinkansen from Tokyo) or Myoko-Kogen Stations (40 min by JR Shinetsu Line from Nagano).

Shinshu 信州

The Shinshu area (Nagano Prefecture) was the home of the 1998 winter Olympics and is one of the most popular ski destinations in Japan for many high level skiers and snow boarders. Here you will find a collection of slopes with various courses and excellent snow quality. Hakuba offers deep snowfall with exceptional snow quality. Slopes with their magnificent scenery and the wide range of variations are sure to please. Heli-skiing, a rarity in Japan is available and there are many programs and services for those who stay more than a few days during the ski season. You can also enjoy aprés ski activities because a shuttle bus going around the town is available in the evening. Shiga Kogen is a typical big ski resort in Japan, at a high elevation and with very fast snow. It is a favorite of the royal family for a ski vacation. Nozawa, enjoyed by novice and advanced skiers alike, is a very large and well-established winter resort with hot springs. At Jigokudani Yaen-koen, you can see wild Japanese monkeys bathing in a large hot spring pond. Direct by bus from Tokyo (about 4 h 40 min); shuttle buses are available from JR Nagano Station (100 min by Nagano Shinkansen) to each ski resort.

Shima Onsen

S

hima Onsen is located in northeast Gunma Prefecture, close to the Niigata Prefecture border, in the eastern part of the Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park. This spa town is surrounded by over 1,000-meter high mountains and next to the meandering Shima River. It abounds in nature: wild deer, waterfalls, flowing streams and great dams deep in the mountains. Shima Onsen’s hot springs and nature were loved and appreciated by prominent writers and poets including Dazai Osamu and Yosano Akiko. The history of Shima Onsen dates back to the end of 10th century. One day an oracle came to a pious warrior received in a dream. After he woke up and went the place of the hot springs gushing out from the earth according to the oracle. He called the hot springs Gomuso no Yu, “dreamt hot springs,” then named this area Shima no Sato. This hot spring resort has over 40 hot spring sources, most of which gush out from the ground. The town is blessed with hot water that creates geothermal energy. It is said that the hot spring water makes your skin smooth and beautiful. Furthermore, drinking hot spring water is said to be very good for the stomach. For more than 100 years, people have been coming to Shima Onsen to ease their pains. Drinking the hot spring waters is good for your stomach and will warm you from the inside. Why not try some hot spring water from fountains located around town? Sekizen-kan is a Japanese style hotel on Ochiai Street with a history of over 300 years. The red bridge in front of the hotel creates a retro atmosphere. The classical hot spring scenery is enhanced by the tourists in yukata (cotton kimono) and geta (sandals). There are 37 Japanese style hotels in Shima Onsen. Each hotel offers fresh, healthy dishes prepared with local ingre-

dients. The locally brewed sake (rice wine) tastes great, especially in the mountain air. The desserts baked with local apples are very popular, too. The town is small and quiet because there are no traffic lights or noisy night spots. The beautiful nature with dramatic seasonal changes is very charming. Other tourist spots are Hinatami Yakushido Temple with its beautiful thatched roof, great waterfalls, and oketsu (holes created by stones and sand caught in the eddies of the river over thousands of years). It is nice to stroll around the impressively blue Lake Oku Shima. and take in the fresh greenery in spring or the autumn colors in fall. Shima Onsen Hot Spring Resort is perfect for a quiet retreat. Trekking paths to the falls are closed during winter.

Hands-on Agricultural Program in Yokohama 「

Yokohama Short Trip

Y

okohama has long been thought of as a “marine city” because of its development over a long time as an international port. But there is another aspect to Yokohama: agriculture. Vast farmlands remain around the city, producing 60,000 tons of vegetables every year. Members of the Yokohama agricultural community have been promoting “local growth, local consumption,” which is a movement that encourages Yokohama residents to consume produce grown locally. This time we will focus on Yokohama as a “farming city.”

Farmers’ Market Farmers set up their own regular vegetable markets at which to sell their vegetables. It is fun to have a chat with local farmers while checking the fresh vegetables they are selling. The “Fureai Asaichi” market is held twice a week (14:00-17:00 on Tue / Thu) on the concourse of Center Kita Station in Yokohama Municipal Subway. A couple of the local farmers in Tsuzuki Ward take turns selling their fresh vegetables. Center Minami Station holds the “Tsuzuki Harvest” on a weekly basis (10:00-14:30 on Fri). This market sells as many as 20 kinds of organic products, including vegetables, pickles and jams, all of which are grown without using chemical insecticides or fertilizers. The “Mercato Kita” market is open every

day (March through September: 8:30-18:00, October through February: 8:30 to 17:00) next to JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) Yokohama. It is convenient to take the bus from Nakamachidai Station. Many local farmers bring their produce here daily, so the market has plenty of variety and quantity.

Harvest Experience “Yours Garden” in Totsuka Ward is a tourist farm that grows about 30 kinds of fruits and vegetables every year, including blueberries, figs, peanuts, sweet potatoes, persimmons, Satsuma oranges. Many visitors are attracted to its “harvest experience,” where they can enjoy picking most of the seasonal crops. Makiko Kadokura, a former flight attendant and the owner of the farm, says that when comparing life overseas to life in Japan, a big difference is the craftsmanship that we have here in Japan. “Japanese people do everything with strict precision,” she comments, “whether it is making machines or growing vegetables.” The staff at Yours Garden take very good care of their organic products. They try to use as little in the way of agricultural chemicals as is possible. Fruits picked by hand are very fresh, and their natural sweetness and deliciousness will bring a smile to your face. Group reservations are possible for groups of ten or more. http://yoursgarden.net

Basic Japanese Home Cooking

Let’s learn from a veteran Japanese housewife!

Buri no Teriyaki Yellowtail in teriyaki sauce Ingredients (serves 4) 4 yellowtail fillets 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp mirin

vegetable oil salt

for accompaniment

2 bunch bok choy

Cooking directions: att. Recipe

If the yellowtail fillets had been refrigerated, set aside until they reach room temperature. Just before cooking, dry the yellowtail using a paper towel or a dishcloth to reduce the fishy smell. Heat a little oil in a pan and place the yellowtail in the pan skin side down. Saute over high heat until the edges of the fillet turns white.

Dry the yellowtail using a paper towel or a dishcloth to reduce the fishy smell.

Turn it over and saute over medium heat until golden brown. Add the soy sauce and mirin to the fish in the pan and boil over low heat until the sauce is reduced to a glaze. For the accompaniment: Cut the bok choy into 4-cm lengths, and then cut each root into 8 pieces lengthwise. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a separate pan and fry the roots and stems. Then add the leaves and season with salt.

The sauce should be poured on after the fish is well cooked in order to prevent it from burning.

Arrange the fish and bok choy on a serving plate. Cover the pan with a lid to protect against the hot oil spattering.

Tips: Please pay attention to the temperature because the sauce can easily burn. Teriyaki is a method of cooking various ingredients in a sweet, hot sauce. It is good for oily fish like salmon as well as yellowtail. Mirin is a sweet, mildly alcoholic rice wine which can be substituted with sake and sugar.

Instructor: Kazuko Karasawa I learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I've been cooking for 18 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.

Japanese Liquid Measures: 1 cup = 200 ml = 6.76 fl oz / 1 tablespoon = 15 ml = 0.5 fl oz / 1 teaspoon = 5 ml = 0.16 fl oz

I sometimes find it difficult to eat fish because of its smell, but this recipe is good and I’ll certainly try it again!

Student: Laetitia Ogawa I was born in France and grew up there. I married a Japanese man. Because Japanese food is good for the health and my son and husband both like it very much, I want to master Japanese recipes.

Quintessence of Japanese Cuisine T okyo is an epicurean city, drawing world's first-class foods and attracts gourmets from far and wide. These are restaurants that can satisfy even the most particular gourmets.

Super Dining ZIPANGU Akasaka Located between Nagatacho, the political part of town, and Roppongi, a glamorous entertainment district, is Akasaka, well-known as the area where adults enjoyed evening entertainment. Traditional restaurants lined the streets and the neon signs of bars and clubs lit up the streets. Akasaka streets of the old days are reproduced in "Super Dining Zipangu Akasaka," a modern Japanese restaurant in the “Nadaman” tradition, a long-established restaurant of Japanese cuisine that opened in 1830. Although still in the style of Nadaman, Zipangu Akasaka, which opened in 2000, is also known for serving a new type of Japanese cuisine that captures the essence of the West and goes well with wine. The 1,330-square meter space offers a variety of atmospheres. There are four counters, each with a different style—sushi, nimono or simmered food, yakimono or grilled food, and a sake tasting bar—private rooms, intimate seat-

ing for couples, families or groups, and even a cigar bar. More than 200 dishes and more than 400 wines, 100 kinds of sake, 70 kinds of shochu, and 100 different cocktails are available. While Zipangu’s policy is to fuse new elements into the traditional, recently the trend has been to return to more orthodox Japanese food. The "assorted appetizer plate," “otsukuri" (sashimi), and other orthodox Japanese dishes are not just based on a wonderful selection of seasonal ingredients, but also as an expression of the renewed feeling of honoring the basics of Japanese cuisine.

ZIPANGU Caretta Shiodome Shiodome is one of the most trendy spots in Tokyo, a city always transforming. Caretta Shiodome is the most distinguished high-rise building. The ZIPANGU Caretta Shiodome restaurant opened on the 47th and top floor of the building in 2002 and, at 200 meters above the street, every seat has a splendid view. At lunchtime, there’s a fantastic view of the lush Hama-rikyu Gardens and the Tokyo Bay. At dinnertime, the illuminated Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower, sparkling Tokyo Bay, and the streams of highway lights can be seen. Watching

the lights of planes landing and taking off in the distance at Haneda Airport also enhances the romantic mood. The décor of the restaurant is modern Italian with modern jazz music playing in the background. You have the choice of a private room, counter seats, or dining table seating, depending on your purpose and the number of guests. More than 80 wines and kinds of local sake are available, and more than 90 dishes are mostly authentic Japanese that go well with both wine and sake. Dine on delicious Japanese cuisine, sip a fine drink in a stylish space with a fusion of Japanese and Western senses, while taking in a breathtaking view—what a luxurious time! Quintessential Japanese cuisine can be found at these special restaurants in Tokyo.

Blending "Western cuisine" elements into the traditional Japanese cooking of NADAMAN Zipangu Caretta Shiodome is located atop Caretta Shiodome, an outstanding and prominent building on the Shiodome Shio-Site. Observe Rainbow Bridge, Hamarikyu Gardens and even see as far as the Boso Peninsula while you eat authentic Japanese food and sample from over 100 brands of wine and sake from around Japan. Tourist Information Transportation / 交通

Rail Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere -- the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line. Japan Rail Pass allows you to use the whole JR system (including the Shinkansen) but is only sold outside Japan. 28,300 yen gets you a full 7 day ticket (adults). For more info, check the Japan Rail Pass website: http://japanrailpass.net

Bus Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

Boat There are many sea routes connecting Hokkaido, the Honshu mainland, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa, respectively. There are also many sea routes to remote islands. Sea fare is usually less expensive than airfare. There are also international routes to China, Taiwan, South Korea and Russia.

Tourist Information

Taxis Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is

unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued.

Getting Around in Tokyo / 東京的交通 In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the under and over ground train system is well organized and highly efficient accessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in different stations, it is highly recommended to purchase pre-paid cards.

Transportation cards/useful tickets If planning to stay in Japan for a longer period why not try using IC cards? (500 yen deposit returned when returning the card) Simply touch the card on a rectangular pad beside the ticket gate and the fare used is automatically deducted from the value of the card. In Tokyo the cards are known as Suica or PASMO and are accepted on JR lines, subways and most other railways and buses. The Tokyo Furii Kippu (東京フリーきっぷ) (http:// www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/) is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 wards), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day -ending at midnight -- at a charge of 1,580 yen.

Getting Around in Osaka /

Transportation cards/useful tickets In the Kansai (Osaka) area ICOCA or PiTaPa is available IC cards similar to Suica / PASMO. The Kansai Thru Pass (スルッと関西) (http:// www.surutto.com/) offers a similar service to the Tokyo Furii Kippu in Kansai and enables subway, railway (bar JR lines), and bus use throughout the Kansai area. Price - 3,800 yen for 2 days or 5,000 yen for 3 days.
