The very famous summer festival in Aomori Prefecture is “Aomori Nebuta Festival.” Here you can enjoy the sight of gorgeous vivid floats called “Nebuta” made of fragile washi paper, hand-designed wire and bamboo frames. Usually, you can only see them during the summer seasons but here at “Hoshino Resorts Aomoriya” you can enjoy Nebuta made by four different Nebuta artisans even in the winter season. The 2-meter-high and 1.5-meter-wide brightly-colored floats will put on display and the contrast with the white snow scene is just fantastic. 說到青森的夏日祭典，那便是「青森佞武多祭（睡魔祭）」。「星野集團青森屋」將在冬季舉辦能夠同時欣賞到四名睡魔工匠作品的「睡魔雪燈展示」活動。龐大且色彩鮮豔的睡魔與純白雪景產生強烈對比，營造出夢幻般的神秘氣氛。

Yellow Falls in Urabandai Ski Resort

A snowshoe trekking tour that heads out to see the Yellow Falls. The huge 10-meterhigh, 8-meter-wide Yellow Falls only appears at the explosion crater of Mt. Bandai in midwinter, so it is called the “Phantom Falls.” The water contains sulfur and iron, and during the midwinter it freezes one layer after another and creates a frozen waterfall that shines in a unique golden color.

只有冬天才看得到的黃色瀑布的雪鞋觀光。從磐梯山的噴火口形成的黃色瀑布，是個高 10 公尺、寬約 8 公尺的巨大瀑布。由於這座瀑布只會在嚴冬時期出現，因此被稱為「夢幻瀑布」。含有硫磺成分及鐵成分的冰被層層堆疊，閃耀著金黃色的光輝。

Zao is known for its juhyo (“snow monsters”), or trees that are glazed with snow and ice. At ski resorts in Zao, these snow monsters are lit up and you can enjoy these prodigious art works of nature. 隨著天氣變化，被冰雪覆蓋的樹木會凝結成「樹冰」，由於外觀看起來就像怪物一般，故也被稱為「雪怪」。藏王的滑雪度假村將舉辦樹冰燈光秀，讓遊客們能欣賞到大自然的藝術傑作。

One of the biggest and most popular winter events in Japan, and many people visit from all over the world. At Odori Park in the heart of Sapporo, which is the main site, both small and large snow sculptures are located along the 1.5-km-long park. The beautiful light up service starts from sunset time and it is a must-see. At the TSUDOME site you can enjoy the huge snow slides and various events where you can interact with snow.

Niigata, “snow country” only a little more than one hour away from Tokyo, is a famous onsen area and a big rice producer, producing Japan’s best sake. I will introduce you to places to visit along with winter activities.

新潟，從東京出發只要 1 小時左右就能抵達的雪國。說到此處，就一定要提到這裡豐富的溫泉，以及產著可釀出日本最好喝的日本酒的米。以下介紹可在參加冬季活動時，順道拜訪的景點！

Located just in front of the station ticket gate, “Gangi-dori Chuo-ichiba” (Gangi-dori street central market) has a full line of Niigata’s specialties, from sweets, sake, and rice, to traditional crafts, which make great souvenirs.

從車站的剪票口出來後，眼前便是「雁木通中央市場」。在這裡有著適合當作伴手禮的點心、美酒、米、傳統工藝品等商品，為數眾多的新潟特產均聚集在此。

Noemi’s recommendation!

One of the most famous Niigata’s specialties, sasa dango is a sweet dumpling with sweet bean paste in rice dough containing yomogi (mugwort), wrapped in sasa (bamboo) leaf, and steamed. It was the first time I saw this sweet. It has a cute shape and great taste! I will buy this again!

In Niigata, people call amaebi (Alaskan pink shrimp) “namban-ebi,” as their bright red color and shape resemble those of namban (red hot chili peppers). This sembei cracker has a nice crunchy and crispy texture with a fragrant flavor.

新潟名產「竹葉糰子」，是一種用摻有魁蒿的麵皮包入摻有核桃的紅豆餡後，再以竹葉裹起蒸新潟的蝦子因為顏色鮮紅，外型又與紅辣椒熟的點心。我也是第一次看到，不僅外型可愛，（日語中亦稱南蠻）相似，因此得名「南蠻蝦」。嘗起來也超級好吃！好想再買哦。香氣誘人，酥脆的口感類似仙貝，非常美味。

An array of sake tasting machines creates an amazing sight that you have never seen before!

品酒自動販賣機壯觀地排在一起，感覺好新奇！

裡頭有「品酒區」，遊客可以在此試飲新潟縣所有酒窖的知名商品。除了日本酒之外，還有葡萄酒及梅酒，也具備各種酒精濃度的酒類。愛喝酒的人在這裡絕對能玩得開心，而不太會喝酒的人也可以試試看酒精濃度較低的商品。這裡的酒類多達 90 種，如果不知道該喝什麼的話，就參考一下熱門排行榜吧！若是找到自己喜歡的口味，也可以在店內購買。（15 歲以下不可入場）

You can sample the major kinds of all the sake breweries in Niigata at “Kikizake corner” (sake-tasting corner). There is also wine and umeshu (plum wine) along with sake, with a variety of alcohol percentages. If you cannot drink much, you can choose low alcohol-type brands to try. There

are some 90 brands available in all, so if you are not sure which ones to try, check out the ranking of popular brands! If you find your favorite one, you can purchase it at the store (children at age 15 years or younger are not allowed to enter). Exchange 500 yen for 1 sake cup and 5 coins. Put a coin into one of the machines and push the button. You can get a cold cucumber (100 yen) for a snack. Eat it with moromi-miso. 先用 500 日圓兌換酒杯及 5 枚代幣。操作方法很簡單！只要投幣然後按鈕就行了。買根冰小黃瓜（100 日圓）當下酒菜。沾點醬油醪味噌，我還可以繼續喝唷～

Try the famous specialty, “bakudan (bomb) onigiri”! “Yukinto,” an onigiri (rice ball) shop with an eating area, serves a famous gigantic onigiri made with a cup of Koshihikari rice produced in Minamiuonuma. A total of 18 kinds of stuffing are available (470 to 880 yen per onigiri, including miso soup and pickles). If you are a big eater, you can try “daibaku onigiri” (big bomb), made with four cups of rice (you can choose five kinds of stuffing). For small eaters like women and children, “shobaku onigiri” (small bomb) may be just right.

即是為了祈求開運、趨吉避兇等願望，所隨身攜帶用的護符。雖然一般的護身符大多為小型袋狀，但近來特殊造型的護身符，也與日俱增當中。

People carry around omamori as a wish for good luck, bringing of happiness, and expelling of evil. Traditional omamori are in the shape of a small pouch, but there are now new types of omamori with unique shapes.

何謂護身符？

Omamori from shrines and temples are amulets or lucky charms, which are considered to contain the power of a god or Buddha within. People carry them around on themselves, their bags, or in their wallets, in a wish to avoid disasters, protect themselves, get involved in a good romance, or get lucky in money. At shrines, it is said to be better to pray after first getting an omamori.

It is said that omamori are effective for one year in many cases, so it is common for people to bring back their omamori after one year to the original shrine or temple and get a new one. If it is difficult to return your omamori to its original place, you can dispose of it wrapped in a sheet of white paper, according to some shrines and temples. 據說護身符的效力能維持一年，一般來說過了一年後，就會將它歸還到原本的神社或寺廟，並再次求取新的護身符。如果無法歸還到原來的地方的話，有些神社或寺廟也接受信眾以白紙包覆護身符，再自行處理掉即可。

At shrines and temples, omikuji and ema are as popular as omamori. Omikuji are fortune-telling paper strips, which tell your fortune with several levels of blessings and curses. Get one omikuji, read it, and tie it to a designated place, such as a pole or a tree, on the premises to create a good connection. If you want, it is okay to bring it back with you. An ema is a wooden tablet on which you write down your wish and/or appreciation of your granted wish, and then it should be left at the shrine/temple. Area Where Traditional Fabric-dyeing Techniques Continue Even Today

Tokyo fabric-dyeing, one of the traditional fabric-dyeing techniques for a variety of beautiful patterns of kimono, and a representative of the traditional culture of Japan, is still vibrant in Shinjuku, along with the fabric-dying techniques of Kyoto (Kyoto Pref.) and Kanazawa (Ishikawa Pref.). Fabric-dyeing factories started gathering along the river about 100 years ago, looking for clean water necessary for dyeing. There are various fabric-dyeing techniques, including Yuzen and Komon. At present, 19 fabric-dyeing factories and studios are each honing their own techniques.

Some no Komichi, a Colorful Sight to See Just Once a Year Feb. 22 – 24, 2019 Some no Komichi festival is held to offer large numbers of people opportunities to see, feel, and understand the traditional fabric-dyeing culture of the Ochiai area. There will be “River Gallery,” where many tanmono (long strips of cloth) will be hung out to float above the river, and “Road Gallery,” where colorfully-dyed noren (split-curtain signs for shops) will be displayed on the front of the stores. 檸檬沙瓦配方集

Nippon Distillers Association (www.shochu.or.jp/) taught us some delicious recipes of lemon sour. They are easy to make, so why not try some!

由日本蒸餾酒工會（www.shochu.or.jp/）傳授的美味檸檬沙瓦調配方法。作法相當簡單，請務必嘗試看看！

Squished Lemon Sour Ingredients

Directions

-60 mL of shocu-korui -150 mL of carbonated water (Standard ratio of shochu and carbonated water is 2:5) -2 lemons -Some ice cubes

(1) Cut the lemons into 4 pieces with a vertical cut and a horizontal cut. Cut each of the 4 pieces into halves to get a total of 8 pieces from 1 lemon, therefore a total of 16 pieces from 2 lemons. (2) Freeze 12 pieces of the 16 pieces of lemon and put the remaining 4 pieces into the fridge. (3) Put both the frozen pieces and chilled pieces of lemon into a glass, pour the shochu-korui over the lemons, add the carbonated water into the glass, and stir briefly with a muddler.

Lemon Tower Sour Ingredients

-70 mL of shochu-korui -280 mL of carbonated water (Standard ratio of the shochu and carbonated water is 1:4) -1 lemon -1 tablespoon of honey

Directions (1) Cut the lemon into thin round slices with a thickness of 5 mm or less, place the slices in a row on a sheet of plastic wrap, cover the lemon with another sheet of plastic wrap, and place it in a freezer. (2) Pour the shochu-korui and honey into a glass, stir it well with a mud dler, and place the “tower” of the frozen lemon slices from (1) into the glass so that it will be sticking out of the glass upright. (3) Pour the carbonated water into the glass and stir it briefly.

Icy Lemon Sour Ingredients

Directions

-50 mL of shochu-korui -200 mL of carbonated water (Standard ratio of shochu and carbonated water is 1:4) -1 lemon-flavored popsicle (without any milkfat)

(1) Pour the shochu-korui and carbonated water into a glass and stir it briefly with a muddler. (2) Place the popsicle in the glass and drink it while stirring it. ( When you’ve finished the drink, you can pour additional shochu-korui and carbonated water as you like)

製作（1）將檸檬以十字對切成四等份。再各自對半

切，將一顆檸檬分為 8 片，兩顆檸檬共 16 片。

方式

（2）將 (1) 步驟中切好的 16 片檸檬切片，取出 12 片放入冷凍，剩餘的 4 片放入冷藏。

（3）在玻璃杯中裝入 (2) 步驟中處理完的冷凍及冷藏檸檬片，並倒入燒酒（甲類）。最後加上氣泡水，以攪拌棒稍微混合即可。

檸檬高塔沙瓦材料

‧ 燒酒（甲類） 70c.c. ‧ 氣泡水

280c.c.

（比例基準燒酒（甲類）：氣泡水＝ 1: 4）

‧ 檸檬 1 顆

‧ 蜂蜜 1 大茶匙

製作（1）將檸檬切成 5mm 以下的薄片，在保鮮膜上

稍做重疊排成 1 列，再蓋上一層保鮮膜，放

入冷凍庫裡冰凍。

(2) 在玻璃杯中倒入燒酒（甲類）及蜂蜜，以攪

拌棒充分混合均勻，再將 (1) 冰凍好的檸檬薄片高塔直插進玻璃杯中。

(3) 裡加入氣泡水，稍微混合即可。

沁涼檸檬沙瓦材料

‧ 燒酒（甲類） 50c.c.

‧ 氣泡水 200c.c.

（比例基準燒酒（甲類）：氣泡水＝ 1 : 4）

‧ 檸檬冰棒（不含乳脂成分） 1 個

製作（1）在玻璃杯中倒入燒酒（甲類）及氣泡水，以方式

攪拌棒稍微拌勻。

(2 ) 將檸檬冰棒放入 (1) 裡混合飲用。（喝完之

後，可依照個人喜好再次倒入燒酒（甲類）及氣泡水。）

This time, we learned how to make nikujaga (pork and potato stew), horenso no goma-ae (spinach dressed with sesame sauce), kimpira gobo (fried burdock root), sawaniwan (soup filled with julienned vegetables) and taking out the soup stock which is a course that the students can easily learn the important foundation of the Japanese food from the professional cooking teacher!

Professional Cooking Teacher (Chie-san) Next Cooking Class: This menu is simply based on Japanese soup stock [dashi]. The first soup was used for a soup filled with julienned vegetables and the second dashi was used for the pork and potato stew. Because both broth are effective, you can eat deliciously without adding any extra seasoning. By grinding the sesame seeds in a mortar right before mixing the spinich, you can enjoy the rich fragrance of the sesame.

Nagato Yumoto Onsen is located in Nagato City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the westernmost point of Honshu (the main island of Japan). It is the oldest hot spring in Yamaguchi Prefecture with a history of 600 years. According to a legend, the hot spring was discovered by a priest from Tainei-ji Temple in this area, who was guided by a divine revelation. The water quality is alkaline and very soft. It is especially good for the skin and often called “the hot spring water for beautiful skin.” It is not so hot but warms the core of the body, so you won’t get cold even in winter after taking a bath. The best part about visiting an onsen town is not only enjoying the hot springs but also touring the town on foot. Taking a walk beside the Otozure River that flows through the town is a perfect way to relax. This area is currently in the middle of a renovation and you can enjoy a pleasant moment at a stylish café that was originally an old Japanese-style house. Various kinds of events and workshops are held where you can taste local foods and communicate with local people. Two public bathhouses long popular among locals are also under re-construction to welcome more visitors, and also internationally famous hotel brand “Hoshino Resort KAI” is scheduled to open in 2020. With these, Nagato Yumoto Onsen is sure to attract even more attention from near and far.
