ara Prefecture, located in the eastern part of the Kansai region, has towns in the northern area and steep mountains in the southern area. This historic region was the first permanent capital of Japan in ancient times, and is home to three Unesco World Heritage sites: Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, Buddhist Monuments in the Horyu-ji area, and Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range. In addition to historic sites, it is blessed with much natural beauty.
Nara City Around Nara-koen Park After a five-minute walk east from Kintetsu Nara Station, you will arrive at Nara-koen Park. Feeding shika-senbei, or rice crackers for deer, to the cute deer is fun. Passing through the park, you will see

Todai-ji Temple. It was built in the mid Nara period (710-794), and has always been one of the major temples in Japan. From Nigatsu-do Hall, you can get a sweeping view of the town of Nara. Kaidan-in Hall houses national treasure Shitenno-zo (Four Heavenly Kings statue). A 10-minute walk from Nigatsu-do through the approach lined by trees will bring you to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. It was built during the Nara period. Its vermillion-lacquered buildings are beautiful and the main shrine and treasure house which houses many national treasures are attractive. Japanese wisteria in the garden is at its best in early May. Lanterns in the precincts are lit in the evening during the period of time of the Mantoro Festival in February and August, and it lures and fascinates visitors with the fantastic atmosphere. A retro Western-style building just to the west of the shrine is the main building of Nara

National Museum. It mainly features Buddhist art and there is no other museum of this type in Japan. The Buddhist sculptures in the main building are especially a must-see. Kofuku-ji Temple is well-known for having the tallest five-story pagoda in Nara. After first construction in 730, this pagoda burned down five times, and the current pagoda was rebuilt in 1426. Among many temple treasures in the Kokuho-kan (Treasure Hall), the Ashura statue is a must see. Its melancholy face has long fascinated visitors. 1352
Naramachi The area from Kintetsu Nara Station to JR Nara Station is full of unique shops and is a good place for eating and shopping. When you walk southward about 15 minutes from Kintetsu Nara Station thorough the shopping mall, you will arrive at Naramachi.

around World Heritage Gango-ji Temple was a merchant district that prospered along with the temple. Common people’s houses that were built from the 19th to 20th centuries still remain, surrounded by narrow allays, which creates a pleasing nostalgic atmosphere. Gengo-ji Temple is an old temple. Its origin is the Hoko-ji Temple that was one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Asuka village in Nara Prefecture and was moved to this location in 718. Imanishi-ke Shoin is a typical shoin-style building built in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) and its Japanese-style garden is also splendid. Naramachi Koshi no Ie is a replica of a traditional house of Naramachi. You can see the structure of the house and how commoners lived in olden days. It has a wonderful lattice structure through which you can well see outside from inside of the house, but you can’t well see inside from outside.
Five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple
Nishinokyo Yakushi-ji Temple is located five minutes on foot from Nishinokyo Station. It was built in 680 by the command of Emperor Tenmu. At the back of the vermillion-lacquered corridor, To-to and Sai-to pagodas stand. To-to (East Pagoda) is a national treasure which has been preserved for more than 1,300 years without damage, even though there were several fires in the temple compound. Sai-to (West Pagoda) was burned down in the 16th century, the Warring Sates period, and rebuilt only in 1981. Comparing the old To-to and beautifully vermillion-lacquered Sai-to is interesting. Toshodai-ji Temple to the north of Yakushiji was built during the Heian period (794-1192) by Ganjin, a Chinese Buddhist priest who came to Japan, as a school for priests to study religious precepts. Both Yakushi-ji and Toshodai-ji are desig從2010年4月24日~6月30日及9月1日~11月7日這 段期間中,將舉行平城宮跡導覽介紹。 http://www.1300.jp/

Commemorative Events of the 1,300th Anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo Capital In 710, Japan’s capital, Heijo-kyo, was built in Nara. In 2010, commemorating the 1,300th anniversary of the Heijo-kyo founding, various events are being held in many places in Nara, including the Heijo Palace site (main venue), which is a World Heritage site. It takes about ten minutes to the Heijo Palace site from Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji Station on foot. A bus is available from Kintetsu Yamato-Saidaiji Station and JR Nara Station. You can see reconstructed buildings and experience the life of people of bygone days. Daigoku-den Hall took 10 years to be reconstructed in its original form. It was the largest

The architectural style and inner walls, on which the four gods who governed the four directions of the compass are depicted, are must-sees. At Heijo-kyo History Museum, you can learn how people engaged in exchanges with China and Korea and how people developed the country viewing a big screen and other displays. There is an original-size replica of a Kentoshisen ship, by which Japanese people in ancient times went to Tang-dynasty China to study. At Heijo-kyo Narikiri Taiken-kan Hall, you can experience clothing and types of work of people of the those days and also excavation the ruins of the Heijo Palace site. Through these, you will learn how people in Nara in ancient times lived. From April 24th through June 30th, and from September 1st to November 7th, guided tours are conducted to see the Heijo Palace site. Volunteer guides guide you around the site and explain the passion and vision of the people who established the capital 13 centuries ago, and also about more mundane things such as their clothing, food and homes. Tours in English, 宅。

Ikaruga is a basin-shaped area located at the southwestern edge of Nara City, and features the World Heritage “Buddhist Monuments in the Horyu-ji Area.” Beautiful temple buildings related to Prince Shotoku are dotted here and there amidst the idyllic scenery. It takes about 50 minutes from Kintetsu Nara Station by bus. Or after an 11-minute ride from JR Nara Station to Horyuji Station, it takes about 15 minutes on foot. The highlight of this area is Horyu-ji Temple. It was built at the beginning of the 7th century by Prince Shotoku, famous for drawing up Japan’s first national constitution, and Emperor Suiko. The present buildings, which were rebuilt in the 8th century, are designated as a World Heritage site as the oldest wooden structures in the world. Horyu-ji was Japan’s first designation as a World Heritage site. The principle image of the temple is enshrined in the Kondo main hall and Japan’s oldest Shitenno-zo statues and many other Buddha statues are also housed in the Kondo. A five-story pagoda, Goju-no-To, next to the Kondo is the oldest five-story pagoda existing in Japan. The upper roofs are smaller than the lower roofs, which gives an elegant appearance to the pagoda and which is highly valued in terms of aesthtics and architecture. Most temple treasures are housed in the Daihozo-in/Kudara Kannon-do halls. The elegant Kudara Kannonzo statue is well known for its balanced proportion and is the temple’s most famous statue. If you have time, Chugu-ji Temple, Horin-ji Temple, and Hokki-ji Temple in this area are also recommended for a visit.

Imai Town
Imai Town Traditional streets of the Edo period remain in Imai town, Kashihara City. Houses with plaster walls and lattice doors create a quiet atmosphere. Head for Hanairaka, the transportation hub of the town, from Kintetsu Yaginishiguchi Station. You can learn about the history of the town and get a map there. Imanishi Family House was built by the family that played a leading role in governing the town. This interesting house is similar to a castle. The Toyota Family House is the house of a lumber dealer. This is a luxurious house using expensive materials such as a zelkova central pillar and pine beams. Shonen-ji Temple is a temple of the Jodo-shinshu sect of Buddhism and the center of Imai, a fortified, temple-centered town. The Kawai Family House is the house of the family that ran a brewery, still in operation today. Placing a parlor on the second floor is a characteristic of this type of merchant’s house.
Asuka Rustic houses are scattered among rice paddies, surrounded by gentle mountains. This typical landscape of ancient Japan is preserved among the ancient ruins and surroundings of Asuka, an area that was the center of Japanese history for 100 years during the Asuka period (592-694). Start at Kintetsu Asuka Station. Touring by bicycle in a relaxed manner is recommended. A 10-minute ride will bring you to Takamatsuzuka tomb. Brilliantly colored wall paintings, on which ancient people are vividly portrayed, were discovered inside the tomb in 1972. There are several theories about the identities of the tomb’s deceased persons. You can see a model of the stone chamber, replicas of burial goods and original-sized imitative paintings at Hekiga-kan Hall next to the tomb.

Ishibutai burial mound is located 20 minutes by bike ride from Takamatsuzuka tomb. It is a stone chamber mound made of some 30 gigantic layered rocks. It is estimated that the rock of the ceiling is 77 tons. You can enter standing inside the mound. Nara Prefecture Hall of Manyo Culture is a facility themed upon the Man’yoshu, the oldest (8th Century) existing anthology of Japanese waka poetry. Seeing videos, Japanese paintings, and the botanical garden is enjoyable.
Hase/Muro A 20-minute walk from Kintetsu Hasedera Station, located in the eastern part of Nara Prefecture, will bring you to Hase-dera Temple. The Hondo, or main hall, which was rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, is similar to a stage and is designated a national treasure. It enshrines a celebrated 10-meter-high Juichimen-Kannonzo statue (Eleven-faced Kannon, Goddess of Mercy). Noboriro is a 200-meter-long corridor. Thousands of large flowers of the Japanese peony tree are gorgeous along the corridor in springtime. Since cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and other flowers bloom at various times throughout the year, the temple is famous for its flowers. Muro-ji Temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism is situated on the mountainside of Mt. Muro. Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture, a World Heritage site that is also the sacred site of the Shingon sect, once did not allow women to enter the mountain. In contrast, as Muro-ji

has allowed women to enter, it has been called Nyonin-Koya (Female Koya). Kondo Hall, a national treasure, Hondo Hall, and a five-story pagoda stand in the precincts surrounded by trees. In spring, a profusion of pale pink rhododendrons creates a splendid sight.
Yoshino Yoshino is located in the middle of the prefecture. It is well-known as a cherry blossom viewing place. You can enjoy breathtaking cherry blossom views for about a month as the blossoms advance from lower elevations (“Shimosenbon”) to higher elevations up the mountainside (“Oku-senbon”). Fresh green leaves in spring and autumn colors in fall are also strikingly beautiful. The World Heritage site Mt. Yoshino was developed as a sacred place of shugendo, which is a religion of ascetic mountain priests who train in mountains and in which Shinto and Buddhist deities co-mingle. Kinpusen-ji Temple is a symbol of Yoshino. Its majestic main hall, Zao-do, is the second largest wooden building after the Hall of the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple. Anybody can participate in devotional exercises each morning and evening. Yoshimizu Shrine was once the Imperial Court of Nancho, founded by Emperor Godaigo in 1336 after escaping from Kyoto where he was confined. In 1594, warrior Toyotomi Hideyoshi held a lavish cherry blossom viewing party here together with a total of 5,000 of his retainers. Emperor Godaigo worshipped piously at
Yoshino
Nyoirin-ji Temple. At the mountain in back of the temple, there is a tomb of the emperor. Chikurinin Temple has the shukubo (lodging facilty) Chikurin-in Gunpoen, and Gunpoen is famous for its beautiful garden. Yoshino-Mimakuri Shrine is an old shrine at Kami-senbon. Yoshino’s specialty is kudzu and you can eat kuzukiri, or noodles made from kudzu flour and sugar, at shops around the town. Kakinoha-zushi is pressed sushi. Pieces of mackerel or salmon are placed on rice and the whole is wrapped with kaki-no-ha, a persimmon leaf, which gives this sushi its name. It takes about 75 minutes from Osaka Abenobashi Station to Yoshino by limited express train on the Kintetsu Line. Nara, the center of ancient Japan, is blessed with long history and traditional culture, and beautiful natural surroundings. Touring in Nara is sure to be a highpoint of travel in Japan.

What is Green Tea?
Let’s have some tea
Green tea was once the exclusive drink of aristocracy and warriors. In the 16th century, Sen no Rikyu perfected the traditional Japanese way of drinking tea and the art of the tea ceremony was born. Later, commoners also began to drink green tea and it has since become the center of the Japanese lifestyle. Tea is made from the cha or tea plant, a theaceous evergreen tree. Surprisingly, black and oolong teas are also made from the same plant. But, unlike other teas, green tea is immediately heattreated after being picked and not fermented.
To learn more, go to a green tea specialty shop. At Kiminoen in Ameyoko, Tokyo, you can sample various teas and buy teapots and cups as well. Matcha ice cream is enjoyable wonderful treat. http://www.kiminoen.jp/ (Japanese only) Modern green tea cafes have been popular for some time in Japan. In Tsukiji, Tokyo, try sencha or matcha at the modern but Japanesefeel Jugetsudo. http://jugetsudo.com/0202jugetsu. html (Japanese only) Cha-Ginza, in Ginza, Tokyo, serves sencha and matcha in a stylish Japanese atmosphere. http://www.uogashi-meicha.co.jp/shop_01.html (Japanese only) Green tea cafes run by the tea manufacturers are dotted throughout the tea plantations in Shizuoka, the largest tea producing prefecture in Japan, as well as facilities where you can experience various things related to green tea. Sipping tea while viewing the splendid green tea fields, with Mt. Fuji rising grandly in the background, is surely a luxury.
How to make Soft water, which contains less calcium and magnesium, is best for green tea. Water in Japan is mostly soft water. The water temperature is important. For sencha, 70-80 °C once-boiled water is good, and for gyokuro, 50-60 °C onceboiled water is best. When making bancha or hojicha, use very hot water and pour quickly. The temperature differences are because each tea has different components. Gyokuro contains a lot of amino acid which creates the mild taste, and sencha contains tannin which makes it bitter and astringent. Amino acids are melted at low temperatures, but tannin and caffeine need higher temperature to melt. That is why tea made with lukewarm water is more mild. However, you need not be overly nervous. If you like hot tea, using very hot water is not wrong. Tea is a luxury you should enjoy as you like. http://www.o-cha.net/english/cup/serving.html#02 http://www.nihoncha-inst.com/basic/basic5.html (Japanese only)
World O-CHA (Tea) Festival 2010 The O-Cha (tea with the honorific ‘O’) festival will be held in Shizuoka for four days from October 28 through 31, 2010. Various events will be held including a trade show and great tea ceremony. http://www.o-cha2010.jp/world/

Types of green tea There are various types of green tea, each with a distinctive taste and characteristics. When you sweat after sports, sencha and hojicha are good because it is easy to drink a lot to replace lost fluids, and also they go well with food. Hojicha is especially refreshing after eating fatty foods. Bancha, hojicha and genmaicha have less caffeine than regular green tea, so they are good for the appetite or before going to bed. They are also recommended for the elderly and children.

Most green tea produced in Japan is sencha. The picked leaves are steamed, rolled and dried. This tea contains a lot of catechin and vitamin C, and so is attractive as a beauty and health aid. It has a mild taste with a fresh aroma. When you want to clear your head or have a hangover, sencha, made with hotter water is good because it contains a lot of caffeine. A cup after meals helps prevent food poisoning and cavities.
Generally, green tea leaves are steamed, but this tea is roasted in a caldron, rolled and dried. This method was introduced from China around the 15th century and the practice persists today in some areas of Kyushu.
Toasted bancha or sencha is called hojicha. They have less caffeine and are less astringent but have a nice aroma.
Gyokuro is a high-quality green tea with a noble aroma. The plants are raised in a covered tea garden to protect the leaves from the light which produces a condensed flavor.
Matcha is the type of tea used for the tea ceremony. It is frothed before drinking with a bamboo whisk called a cha-sen.
Bancha has a bitter and astringent flavor, contains a lot of catechin, and is very refreshing.
Genmaicha is a mixture of toasted rice with sencha or bancha. It has a delicious tea taste plus the delicate flavor of toasted rice. It goes down easily and so genmaicha is great for those who are not familiar with the taste of green tea.

World Heritage Site and Grand Nature: Nikko Two shrines and one temple (Furatasan Shrine, Toshogu Shrine, and Rinno-ji Temple) and ruins surrounding them are designated as a Unesco World Heritage site in the “Nikkosannai” area that is about five minutes by bus from Nikko Station. Representative Japanese religious architectural structures and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo shogunate, are highlights of the area’s sightseeing. At Toshogu, the shrine dedicated to Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, visitors flock to see the Yomeimon Gate (Gate of Sunlight) decorated with over 500 ornate gilt wood carvings and vivid colors, and the charming “three wise monkeys” that symbolize the principle of “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” taught in childhood. The One Thousand Samurai Warriors Procession is presented at the semiannual shrine festivals held each year in spring and autumn. At the temple’s main building and the Sanbutsudo Hall (Hall of the Three Buddhas) in Rinno-ji Temple, there are three large gilt statues of the three deities enshrined in the temple: the Amida-Nyorai Buddha, the Senju (thousandarmed) Kannon, and the Bato (horse-headed) Kannon. Rinno-ji’s Taiyuin, which is the mausoleum of the builder of Toshogu Shrine, has a calm, stately atmosphere, and 315 lanterns standing like a forest on the temple grounds are also very impressive. Nikko Futarasan Shrine is historically dedicated to Mt. Futara (also known as Mt. Nantai) as its sacred mountain. From the back of the main approach a stone-paved path runs through woods abounding with huge rocks, springs and waterfalls, and it is about 1 km to the detached shrine, Takinoo Shrine. “Undameshi no torii” – the sacred gate of the test of luck – is built in the middle of the road to the shrine, and here you can try your luck by throwing pebbles three times to the center hole, and the number of the stones going through the hole will tell you the degree of your good or bad fortune. The area after passing over the Irohazaka mountain pass including Yumoto Onsen is called “Oku-Nikko,” or outlying Nikko, and abounds in natural scenic spots such as lakes, waterfalls, grassy meadows, and marshlands. Mt. Nantai is 2,486 meters in height. This is good place for hiking from spring to fall. Lake Chuzenji formed in the blocked valley that was created by the eruption of Mt. Nantai about 20,000 years ago. This area is one of the sacred places for mountain worship. The area is also popular as a summer resort and a resort villa. Kegon Falls, a fall of 97 meters, is classified as one of the Three Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Japan. Senjogahara is a highland moor spreading out at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level. Various kinds of animals and plants inhabit the marshland, and alpine plants are particularly beautiful during summer. Yuba is a local specialty of Nikko. It is a processed food of the soybean, and is a delicacy composed of layers of the skin of boiled soybean milk. It was originally a portable food for Buddhist priests. When you go a little further by train from Nikko, you will come to Kinugawa Onsen, which is one of the largest hot springs in the Kanto district and there are many Japanesestyle inns and hotels along the grand gorges of the Kinugawa River. In the Edo period (16031868), when the onsen was founded, only Buddhist monks and feudal lords were allowed to use it, but then since the late 19th century it has been open to the public. Nearby are Edo Wonderland, in which Edo style streets and scenes are reproduced, and Tobu World Square which exhibits on a one-25th scale replicas of famous buildings of the world. Tobu Railways limited express trains run from Asakusa in Tokyo to Nikko and Kinugawa, and, also, using the direct connection from JR Shinjuku to Tobu Railways limited express is convenient. Either way is about a 2-hour trip.
Central Tochigi Prefecture: Utsunomiya Utsunomiya City is the prefectural capital of Tochigi Prefecture. Ooya Stone is a kind of tuff and is quarried in the western part of Utsunomiya for use as a building material. It was used for the Imperial Hotel that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1922, and at
present the main entrance part of the hotel is preserved and exhibited in the outdoor museum Meiji-Mura in Aichi Prefecture. The Ooya Stone Museum and Ooya Heiwa Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) also are good places to visit. Recently gyoza (Chinese dumpling) has become a specialty of Utsunomiya and is very popular. There are many gyoza-only restaurants in the city, and many tourists visit the city to enjoy the specialty.
Storehouse Town: Tochigi Tochigi had flourishing exchanges with Edo (present-day Tokyo), and it is sometimes called “Ko-Edo” (Little Edo) because of its remaining Edo-style residences. The city flourished as a mercantile city which had the advantage of transport to Edo by water via the Uzuma River running north and south in the center of the city, and was a post station of the Reiheishi Kaido route that emissaries called “reiheishi” sent by the Edo government to Nikko Toshogu traveled along. Tochigi’s main attraction is perhaps its retro streets where princely storehouses and old Western-style buildings still stand. Between the main street where mercantile houses and storehouses stand, and the Kourai Bridge over the Uzuma River, many plaster-clad storehouses are lined up side by side. Thus as you walk about here you may feel as if you have slipped back in time to the Edo period. On the Uzuma River, where carp are swimming, you may romantically enjoy the storehouse views and the river breezes as you ride a sightseeing boat (April to September, 12:00 to 16:00 everyday, except when raining). The Tsukada Museum of History and Legend beside the Korai Bridge was once the residence of a wealthy merchant named Tsukada who ran a timber trade firm, and its black fence and white clay wall storehouse is one of the representative sights of Tochigi. Going north from the Kourai Bridge, you will come to the Dashikaikan (Hall of Doll Floats) and Kuranomachi Museum of Art. On the other side of the Uzuma River, there is the Yokoyama Kyodokan (Folk Museum). It was formerly the residence and business premises of a wealthy merchant who ran a hemp wholesale business on the right side of the shop and a bank business on left side in the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Tochigi was the prefectural capital of the old Tochigi prefecture (the south part of Tochigi Prefecture and a part of Gunma Prefecture) until 1884, and its official remnants can be seen in the moats, which are called Kenchobori (moats of the prefectural capital). The Annex of Tochigi City Hall is an elegant Western-style structure built in the Taisho period (19121926). Strolling around and seeing museums converted from renovated storehouses and clay storehouses of old families, and Taisho period modern-looking Western-style buildings in the town is enjoyable. Tochigi’s local specialty is Tochigi fried noodles containing potato, and they have the good old common taste such as we enjoyed at the neighborhood sweets shop in old days. It takes about 70 minutes from Asakusa to Tochigi by limited express train on the Tobu Nikko Line. Or, about 80 minutes from Shinjuku by direct limited express via JR and Tobu lines. If you use the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train, change at Oyama Station to JR Ryomo Line and it takes about 10 minutes from Oyama to Tochigi. You can fully enjoy walking around the town in half a day.
Ramen Town: Sano Sano is the neighboring town of Tochigi. The Soshu-ji Temple is one of the three major temples famous for yakuyoke, or expelling evil spirits, in the Kanto district. This temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism is commonly called Sano Yakuyoke Daishi, and is very crowded with worshippers during the time for New Year’s visits. In recent years, Sano ramen has made the name of Sano popular throughout Japan. The clear soy saucebase soup is its staple taste. Sano Premium Outlets opened in 2003, and some 180 domestic and overseas brands are brought together in buildings styled on East Coast cities of America. It takes about 20 minutes from Tochigi to Sano by train on the JR Ryomo Line.
Ashikaga is in the southwestern part of Tochigi Prefecture, and the Watarase River runs through the center of the city. Ashikaga Gakko (Ashikaga School) is said to be Japan’s oldest academic institution, and was built in either the late Heian period (794-1192) or the early Kamakura period (1192-1333). Passing through the massive gate with “Gakko” engraved on it, you may enter the large school premises. Classes took place in the square room with the thatched roof. There is a kuri, which is a temple-style eating facility and was used as a dining room, a shuryo that was used as students’ living quarters and other facilities. Ashikaga is also called “Sho-Kyoto (Little Kyoto) in the East.” Brick buildings, Westernstyle buildings with delicate carvings, and Taisho-roman-style buildings dot the city landscape. Even now, most of these are still used as factories and shops. The Banna-ji Temple near the Ashikaga Gakko still keeps the style of old samurai residences of the Kamakura period (1192-1134) on its mounds and moats surrounding the temple. A stone-paved street connects the Ashikaga Gakko to Banna-ji Temple. The town formerly flourished as a fabric industry town, and thus some Japanese kimono and old fabric stores still stand on the streets. There are also antique bookshops selling Japanese books of the Edo period. Stores selling rice crackers and anmitsu sweet parlors or eating parlors are best for food sampling while walking around. Ashikaga Orihime Shrine, dedicated to the god of marriage, is in Ashikaga. The former Ashikaga Mohan Nenshi Factory (now Antares Sports Club) was one of the model twine factories that used to be built all over Japan, and is the only one that still physically exists. The former Ashikaga Orimono Corporation (now Tochisen Corporation) was a dye works with red brick walls built from 1913 to 1919. The former Kimura Exporting and Textile Factory office building (now Ashikaga Textile Museum) was the office building of a textile factory built in 1911. Ashikaga Flower Park is a wisteria paradise with a 1,200 tatami-mat size (about 2,000 square meters) gigantic wisteria trellis, an 80-meter-long white wisteria tunnel, and in total about 300 wisteria trees. Koko Farm Winery is on the outskirts of the town, and you may tour vineyards or wineries, and enjoy lunch with a well-matched wine. Getting to Ashikaga takes about 70 minutes from Asakusa by limited express train on the Tobu Isezaki Line. It takes about 50 minutes from Oyama on the JR Ryomo Line. Tochigi is close to Tokyo, and there are many great sightseeing spots. It is a wonderful place to visit.

Taking a short trip around port town Yokohama on a bicycle taxi
Yokohama Short Trip
“V
elotaxis” are cute and highly mobile three-wheeled taxis that are powered by humans and therefore output zero gas emissions. How about taking a short trip around Yokohama on one of those bicycle taxis? You can grab a velotaxi running in the city, and can also fi nd them parked near sightseeing spots in the bayside area. The basic fare is 300 yen per person. Your fare will be determined by the length of your journey, so it is a good idea to check the price with the driver before taking a ride. The backseat can carry two persons – take your seat and you will hear the driver ring a bell to signal the start of your journey. As there is no window on the vehicle, the air, sounds and smells of Yokohama can be sensed directly. There is no engine sound, either, and it is a very comfortable ride. The car travels along a tree-lined street in front of Yamashita Park together with automobiles, and then weaves its way through the narrow lanes of China Town. Onlookers are often curious, turning around
to look at us and occasionally waving! At Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, a brick building constructed in the early 20th century, you can enjoy shopping and dining. Osanbashi Pier offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the harbor, passenger boats and Bay Bridge, and also is the venue for various events. Minato Mirai is one of the most attractive locations. Visit Cosmo World and ride the futuristic attractions, or walk around and drop by shops selling plenty of fashionable items. Meanwhile, the Anpanman Museum is recommended for visitors with children. You can also spend some luxury time savoring the beautiful night view of Minato Mirai. While controlling the taxi with his excellent footwork, the driver offers various guide information depending on the customers’ wishes. Some drivers are able to provide guides in English. Enjoy the summertime in Yokohama and feel the refreshing sea breeze!
「Velotaxi」 。

anki Shirahama is one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Nanki, an area including Wakayama Prefecture and the southern part of Mie Prefecture. There are various types of accommodations ranging from luxurious resort hotels to reasonablypriced minshuku inns to public facilities. You can fully enjoy soaking in baths at hotels and also touring baths of pubic bathhouses. A number of hot spring resorts in this area are collectively called Nanki Shirahama Onsen. The onsen has a more than 1,350year history and is one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan along with Arima Onsen and Dogo Onsen. Yuzaki Onsen is said to be the origin of Nanki Shirahama Onsen and is mentioned in ancient books like Man'yoshu (A Collection of a Myriad Leaves) and also Nihonshoki (Chronicles of Japan), both of which were written in the 8th century. In addition, there are also spas in Higashi Shirahama, Tsunashirazu, Oura and Kogaura. There are six public bathhouses in Shirahama and among them "Shirasuna" has an open-air bath in which you can enjoy soaking wearing a bathing suit. Because people can enjoy the bath simply by wiping off beach sand after swimming in the ocean, the spa attracts many people in summertime. Those who enjoy all six of the baths will be given yunohana mineral deposit, a kind of bath salt, as a souvenir. Shirarahama is one of the major beaches for swimming in the Kansai area. Basic Japanese Home Cooking
Kabocha no goma sauce Pumpkin with sesame sauce Ingredients (serves 4) 1/2 pumpkin 8 pods soramame broad beans (can be substituted with soybeans or peas) 1/2 onion 4-cm piece of carrot
Sesame sauce 4 tbsp dashi (fish soup stock) 4 tbsp soy sauce 4 tbsp mirin (sweet rice wine for cooking) 3 tbsp nerigoma (sesame paste)
Cooking directions:
When cutting the pumpkin, be careful because the rind is very hard and may be difficult to cut.
Remove the soramame beans from the pods.
att. Recipe
Wash the rind of the pumpkin carefully. Remove the seeds and strings with a spoon. Cut the pumpkin into 8-mm wide sections, without peeling. In France, soramame are not common but any other similar kind of bean is OK for this recipe.
Peel the half onion and cut into 4 vertical wedges. Peel the carrot and slice into 1-cm rounds.
Place the pieces of pumpkin in a steamer with the rind side down. Add the pieces of onion and carrot. Make sure there is enough space between the vegetables for the steam to rise evenly. Cover and steam for 10 minutes over high heat. In a small pan, bring the dashi, soy sauce and mirin to a boil. Turn off the heat and mix in the sesame paste little by little. If sesame paste is not available, use sugar-free peanut butter or zhimajiang. Option: Chinese sesame paste with zhimajiang In a bowl, dilute 2 tbsp zhimajiang with 1.5 tbsp sake. Add 1 tbsp vinegar and 1 tbsp soy sauce and mix well. Then mix in 2 tsp sugar.
When cutting the onion, leave the root end intact so the layers will not separate. You can use a pasta pot with a colander insert. Or, put ingredients in a bowl, place the bowl in a big pot and add water to just under the half the height of the bowl.
When the pumpkin is soft (test with a toothpick or small knife) add the beans and steam for an additional 5 minutes.
Make sure there's enough water so it doesn't boil away during cooking. If so, add hot water as needed.
Serve on a plate with the sesame sauce on the side for dipping.
Tips: For a tasty summer dish, serve after cooling in the refrigerator. Broccoli, corn and other vegetables can also be used and can be steamed easily in a microwave oven.
Instructor: Kazuko Karasawa I learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I've been cooking for 18 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.
Be careful of the hot steam when lifting the lid of the steamer.

Japanese Liquid Measures: 1 cup = 200 ml = 6.76 fl oz / 1 tablespoon = 15 ml = 0.5 fl oz / 1 teaspoon = 5 ml = 0.16 fl oz
It is very easy, but also good feast for guests. I'll serve this when my mother-in-law comes to our home.
Student: Laetitia Ogawa I was born in France and grew up there. I married a Japanese man. Because Japanese food is good for the health and my son and husband both like it very much, I want to master Japanese recipes.

Rail 鐵路 Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.
Getting Around in Tokyo /
There are many sea routes connecting Hokkaido, the Honshu mainland, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa, respectively. There are also many sea routes to remote islands. Sea fare is usually less expensive than airfare. There are also international routes to China, Taiwan, South Korea and Russia.

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.
Japan Rail Pass Japan Rail Pass allows you to use the whole JR system (including the Shinkansen) but is only sold outside Japan. 28,300 yen gets you a full 7 day ticket (adults).

In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the under and over ground train system is well organized and highly efficient accessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in different stations, it is highly recommended to purchase pre-paid cards.

In Tokyo the cards are known as Suica or PASMO and are accepted on JR lines, subways and most other railways and buses. Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere.
