Subject of Course The lecture courses Architecture Theory 1 + 2 are concerned with architecture with respect to anthropological, social, cultural, political, economical, technical, mathematical, theories of science, technology, and communications, as well as aesthetic, religious (both history and practice), and gender related discourses and disciplines.

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung Die Vorlesungen Architekturtheorie 1 + 2 befassen sich mit Architektur unter anthropologischen, sozialen, kulturellen, politischen, ökonomischen, technischen, mathematischen, kommunikations- und wissenschaftstheoretischen, sowie ästhetischen, religionspraktischen und -geschichtlichen, sowie genderbezogenen Gesichtspunkten.

VO Architecture Theory 1 guides the students through a broad historical spectrum (with respect to developments in science, culture, and architecture). It introduces conceptual and mathematical instruments at work in architecture theory, and it learns to distinguish a variety of ‘theoretical gestures’ in how these abstract instruments have been and are being ‘played’ by architects. VO Architecture Theory 2 builds upon the first lecture course, and attends mainly to more recent and contemporary architecture and architecture theory.

Die Vorlesung Architekturtheorie 1 führt durch ein breites Spektrum von Architektur-, Wissenschafts- und Kulturgeschichte, und vermittelt begriffliche und mathematische architekturtheoretische Instrumente, kontextualisiert in vergleichender Weise deren Entstehung und Veränderungen, und unterscheidet variierende ‘theoretische Gesten’ im Umgang mit diesen abstrakten Instrumenten. Die Vorlesung Architekturtheorie 2 baut auf der ersten Vorlesung auf und widmet sich hauptsächlich der jüngeren und gegenwärtigen Architekturtheorie.

Learning outcomes After successful completion of the course, students are able to identify architecture as a site where ‘world pictures’ and ‘world models’ manifest and express themselves. Through the two VOs Architekturtheorie 1 and 2, they have been introduced to think about technology from a philosophical point of view and have learnt to relate critically to architecture. They have acquired knowledge of a broad spectrum of stances and approaches to architecture theory throughout history as well in the contemporary condition. They are introduced to the key concepts and instruments (language and mathematics) at work in architecture theory. With this, students are capable of grasping and relating critically to the complex entanglement between theory, technics, knowledge, skill and power. They learn to recognise analog situations throughout different domains, and how to locate and contextualise them respectively. They are familiar with the fact that, and in a basic sense also with how, different theoretical stances entail different implications and effects upon a the respective practice.

Lernergebnisse Nach positiver Absolvierung der Lehrveranstaltung sind Studierende in der Lage, Architektur in einem breiten wissenschafts- wie kulturkritischen Verständnis als Ort des Ausdrucks und der Manifestation eines jeweiligen Weltbezuges zu erfassen. Sie erwerben in den beiden VO Architekturtheorie 1 und 2 Kenntnisse der wichtigsten Theorieansätze in der Geschichte der Architektur wie auch in der gegenwärtigen Architektur, und sie sind vertraut mit den zentralen begrifflichen Instrumenten und mathematischen Konzepten der Architekturtheorie. Damit sind sie in der Lage, als angehende ArchitektInnen das voraussetzungsreiche Verhältnis von Theorie, Technik, Wissen, Können, und Macht zu erfassen und zu reflektieren. So What? Daydreaming at the Crossroad of Architecture and Music

Live Lecture Vorlesung

Subject of Course What? A proposal for daydreaming at the point of “So what?” where nothing–at a conceptual level–could only be itself. A polycentric seminar rethinking the boundaries of aurality and spatiality… Dwelling on the metaphor of orbital movement, it allows participants to follow interdisciplinary paths through philosophy, architecture, and music in which the path never remains the same and the continuous questioning becomes a perpetuum mobile.

As the relation once of a physical reality, audial and spatial, rushes to gain a complexity it evolves into music and architecture. To be able to deal with this complexity we need to dwell on overarching concepts and mobilize them. Within this polycentric setting a question rises like a mountain in the midst: How could we generate an articulate thinking in a sophisticated, yet humble and novel manner? How? The seminar dwells on the tripartite structure of thinking, reading, and expressing. Accompanied by reading and presenting text clusters, participants are expected to raise individual questions laying the foundations of a structured research process. A non-physical displacement through brain-and-ear-storming online meetings with guests to discuss novel ways of understanding the relation between the aural and spatial awaits participants. Submission of a seminar paper is required. Why? Outcomes of this seminar could be set forth as a set of â&#x20AC;&#x153;awareness,â&#x20AC;? starting by perceiving the overarching importance of theory. As active contributors to the seminar participants get accustomed to theory in a-temporally and contextually-polycentric layout. On the one hand, confronting clusters of ideas and learning how to mobilize them throughout the process of research, on the other hand, being able to transform this process of critical thinking to a novel synthesis without compromising creativity. Scheduled fieldtrips and meeting guest scholars aim participants to become aware of the importance of intellectual and spatial surroundings as inputs. Through a selected reader list and its group presentations participants get the opportunity to practice individual and group-working skills.

Learning outcomes After successful completion of the course, students are able to work with texts (writing and research), and can distinguish between academic and journalistic writing. They are aware of the correct handling of quotation and bibliography, basic principles of library and internet research, as well as primary forms of argumentation. Participants are be able to perceive, structure, and organize a specific topic in such a way that it can be thoroughy discussed in a seminar paper. Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung Dieses Modul breitet ein Instrumentarium für eine digitale Architektonik aus, welches einführt in die Denkstrukturen, wie Architektur, Mathematik, und Philologie vor dem Hintergrund der generischen Informationstechnik, Big Data, und Maschineller Intelligenz zusammenspielen können. Learning outcomes After successful completion of the course, students are able to see the vast societal transformations that go along with digitalization in a big picture. They have acquired ideas of how contemporary technology can be anchored with respect to the tradition of thinking about technics in the tradition of architecture. The module addresses specifically students interested in pursuing an academic and research oriented career, with emphasis on theory in architecture and urban design and planning. This module will llet the students actively participate in the ATTP research pursuits, as well as in our cooperations with other international universities.

Methods The lecture courses will be prepared in online form, as modular episodes. In parallel, there will be live discussions in Zoom each Friday from 10:00 to 14:00, with all the lecturers from the different courses present together with the students of the module. The exercise course consists of guided writing exercises with the intent to unite the acquired ideas in the active exploration of the genre of treatise writing. Subject of Course The lecture “Architecture and Mathematics” introduces architecture in dealing with theorems. Cities and buildings are miniatures of the world. Mathematical theorems host virtual views of the whole world. They are less a world model than a virtual world view, against the background of which a specific locality can be communicatively qualified. The lecture conveys fundamental figures of thought in mathematics, as an uncorrupted ‘way’ (method) to enable the roles of nature, space, time and intellect to be tapped through all ages and cultures.

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung Die Vorlesung “Architektur und Mathematik” führt in eine Architektonik im Umgang mit Theoremen ein. Städte und Gebäude sind Miniaturen der Welt. Mathematische Theoreme beherbergen virtuelle Sichten auf das Ganze der Welt. Sie sind weniger ein Weltmodell als vielmehr ein virtuelles Weltbild, vor dessen Hintergrund ein konkreter Ort kommunikativ qualifiziert werden kann. Die Vorlesung vermittelt grundlegende Denkfiguren in der Mathematik, als unkorrumpierter ‘Weg’ (Methodik), um die Rollen von Natur, Raum, Zeit und Intellekt durch alle Zeiten und Kulturen hindurch erschließen zu können.

Subject of Course The lecture “Architecture and Philology” deals with the role of language in today’s architecture. This suffers from the increasing flood of images that are largely meaningless (because they are generic and unspecific in what they represent). In contrast, as in the Renaissance, many interesting vernacular colloquialisms emerge on a new technical basis. We follow the idea that architecture is spoken and not drawn, and gives generous space for speaking. It deals with the rhetorical and dialectical figures, as well as literary formats in which the techniques and manners of an era manifest themselves. Furthermore, current discourses

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung Die Vorlesung “Architektur und Philologie” beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle von Sprache in der heutigen Architektur. Diese leidet unter der zunehmenden Flut an Bildern, die weitgehend bedeutungslos werden (weil generisch und unspezifisch in dem, was sie darstellen). Subject of Course The lecture exercise course “Architecture and Treatise” is a course in which the students bring together the contents of the lectures and write independent texts on digital architectonics, including methods of digital humanities as well as classic poetics, rhetoric and dialectics. The students will exercise themselves in how one can learn to take the old architecture treaties seriously today, and how one can find inspiration to learn from architecture to speak and write again in a relevant way about the current transformations of our world.

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung Die Vorlesungsübung “Architektur und Traktate” ist eine Lehrveranstaltung, in der die Studierenden unter Einbezug von Methoden der Digital Humanities, wie auch der klassischen Poetik, Rhetorik und Dialektik, eigenständige Texte zur Digitalen Architektonik schreiben. Es wird geübt, wie man die alten Traktate wieder ernst nehmen kann, und wie man darin Anregung finden kann, um aus der Architektur heraus wieder auf relevante Weise zu den gegenwärtigen Transformationen unserer Welt sprechen und schreiben zu lernen.

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung Im Zentrum dieses Moduls steht das Verhältnis von Architektur und Code. Es geht in allen Veranstaltungen um die Architektur als eine kritische, kommunikative, wie auch erfinderische Praxis: eine Architektin, ein Architekt soll in eigenem Namen die eigene Arbeit signieren können. Dafür gilt es heute mehr denn je, die Formen, Formate und Fertigkeiten in Kommunikation und Vermittlung nicht nur zu kennen und zu verstehen, sondern auch zu ,können’. Darin schulen sich die Studierenden in diesem Modul.

The module sees architecture as an inventive and critical practice. In order to realize a project, architects need not only convince with their proposals and designs a great number of decision makers. But they must also be able to grasp for themselves, with clarity and articulacy, the ideas and ambitions they pursue. In other words, they must be able to index and code what they are after, in order to communicate it well. The ability to comprehend of oneself as a participant of discourses with a public audience does not come easily, and wans to be exercised. This module presents and trains several skills and strategies for achieving such literacy. It addresses ambitious architects and everyone who wants to learn how to write, talk, research, curate, and critically asses their architectural practice in public: be it in concept work, theory discourse, architecture research, journalism, film, communication and public relation, curation.

Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung Die Vorlesung “TALK” untersucht philosophische Theorien zum relevanten Kultur- und Architekturdiskurs, und bezieht dabei Themen u.a. aus der Ökonomie, der Ökologie, Politik, Ethik, Kunst, Pädagogik, Ingenieurs- und Rechtswissenschaften mit ein. Diess Semester wird die Vorlesung “TALK” den Fokus auf mathematisches Denken legen. Es ist der invariante und explizite Teil in Bezug auf mathematische Konzepte, dem eine ArchitektIn in der täglichen Arbeit selbstverständlich begegnet - wie z.B. ‘Form’,

‘set,’ ‘system’, ‘type,’ ‘proportion’, ‘volume’, ‘area,’ or ‘power’. Many people believe that in mathematics, one follows only rules, mechanically and with no deliberation. In many ways this is true, of course. But at the same time mathematical concepts have a history and are part of sociocultural contexts. We will put special attention also to this philosophical and inventive part that belongs to mathematics too. Having an awareness of this sociocultural scope of deliberation that mathematical thinking provides is a basic literacy highly relevant with regard to the capacities of thinking abstractly; perhaps it is as relevant for the kind of abstract thinking in which every architect needs to be proficient as being able to master basic grammar or basic arithmetics is with regard to dialectical thinking in general. This course will be co-taught by Elias Zafiris, a theoretical physicist and professor in mathematics and logics, and Vera Bühlmann, professor for architecture theory and philosophy of technics. No special previous knowledge or affinity with mathemathics is assumed. The course is based on general mathematics (Matura level).

‘Regel’, ‘Struktur’, ‘Zahl’, ‘Feld’, ‘Gruppe’, ‘Menge’, ‘System’, ‘Typ’, ‘Proportion’, ‘Volumen’, ‘Fläche’ oder ‘Leistung’. Viele Menschen glauben, dass man in der Mathematik nur Regeln befolgt, mechanisch und ohne nachzudenken. In vielerlei Hinsicht trifft dies natürlich zu. Aber gleichzeitig haben mathematische Konzepte eine Geschichte und sind Teil soziokultureller Kontexte. Wir werden auch diesem philosophischen und erfinderischen Teil, der ebenfalls zur Mathematik gehört, besondere Aufmerksamkeit schenken. Das Bewusstsein für diesen soziokulturellen Rahmen der Erwägungen, den das mathematische Denken bietet, ist eine grundlegende Literacy, die im Hinblick auf das Vermögen abstrakten Denkens von großer Bedeutung ist; vielleicht ist sie für die Art des abstrakten Denkens, in der jede ArchitektIn fähig sein muss, ebenso relevant, wie das meistern grundlegender Grammatik oder grundlegender Arithmetik hinsichtlich dialektischem Denken im Allgemeinen. Dieser Kurs wird gemeinsam gelehrt von Elias Zafiris, theorethischer Physiker und Professor für Mathematik und Logik, und Vera Bühlmann, Professorin für Architekturtheorie und Technikphilosophie. A selection of three tasks will be offered for the students to chose one, and to write a short essay that shows the student’s application of the learnt themes to an architectural artefact. There will be a deadline to submit the essays via TUWEL. Video documentation as well as a text reader will be provided for the students to solve their exam tasks in proficient manner.

In poetics for example by establishing a unity of place, time and action; in rhetoric for example by demonstrating a case by means of ‘common topics’ or ‘commonplaces’, by recognising and utilising kairos (seizing and fitting the moment), and by a process of stasis, meaning the critical assessment and questioning of an argument and thus bringing an unsettled state into one of balanced stability.

Our interest will be in how these terms are treated in the traditions of rhetoric and poetics as separate entities that play together in ‘a plot’ of which we can think architectonically. The principled treatment of these entities (place, time, and action) are not only central to every text, but also to architecture across all scales (for example place making through identification of site, task, and context of a project; time with regard to identifying a style, or a building’s classicality or modernity; and action with regard to the great importance of ‘agency’ at work in the planning and building of our environments). This course will be co-taught by Sebastian Michael, a professional writer of plays, novels, poetry, as well as popular science prose, and Vera Bühlmann, professor for architecture theory and philosophy of technics. There will be weekly lectures combined with practical exercises along the classical canon of “progymnasmata” exercises – adapted to our contemporary interests.

Learning outcomes After succesful completion of the course, students are able to deal with language and words rhetorically and poetically. They are equipped with a basic vocabulary of ideas and concepts in rhetoric and poetics, and have gained practical experience of how to use them. Furthermore, students have been introduced to exercises form Creative Writing that help to loosen a ‘writer’s blockage’.

Methods The course will consist of lectures as well as exercises: (1) Lectures on the principles of rhetoric and poetics – the students will be provided with a basic vocabulary of concept as well as (2) exercises to acquire proficiency in articulation, which all students will be expected to participate in. Mode of examination and Examination modalities Written. The semester will be structured in eleven meetings, ending before the Christmas break. Attending the sessions and participating in the exercises is mandatory. The students are expected to submit weekly exercises via TUWEL, and to complete the course with a longer piece of writing (due in January before the Semester ending): students will be expected to draw together all the skills from the weekly exercises, and compose a rhetorical ‘oration’.

Prüfungsmodus und Leistungsnachweis Schriftlich. Das Semester wird in elf Einzeltermine strukturiert sein, die vor den Weihnachtsferien enden. Subject of Course This semester we will ascertain distance (— just not geometrically), and pixels (— just not colouring), and act (— take action) upon its architectonics to question what is inherent in the representation of things — those which are on the raster screen and on the picture plane and on the imagination. If to look at everything from above is an act of sabotage of terrestrial laws— the unique relationships between the house, the mountain, the basement, the cornice are all lines joined at altitude — perhaps to look up on

the skies could be the precisely the contrary: only ever addressed projectively upon the spheric celestial, the sky can be seen as space in between and cosmic distances only measurable in scales of time; all lines joined at constellations. Distances between such bodies, together with planets and moons, can be registered through their relative position amongst calculations that ultimately allow us to make a distinction between a foreground and a background —following the method called parallax measuring—. The absence of any depth or physical distance between the measured would present identical pictures in time after displacing our observatory; the effect of parallax is then the observed apparent change in the position of an object resulting from a change in the position of the viewer. Therefore, through distance we will address stillness and motion. Perhaps the least familiar of the half dozen or so terms used by William Gilpin (1792, Three Essays: On Picturesque Beauty; On Picturesque Travel; and On Sketching Landscape: To Which Is Added A Poem, On Landscape Painting) to define the picturesque is keeping. Occasionally compared to aerial perspective, keeping refers to the representation of distance and depth in images. For a picture to be considered picturesque, in Gilpin’s terms, it has to produce the effect of keeping distance between objects in a painting, as the composition moves from front to back and from one object to the next. Keeping can be achieved not by the absence of detail but by displacement and obfuscation of detail through processes of addition and erasure. Learning outcomes After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop new formats and ways of architectonic thinking that encompass not only dealing with two dimensional drawings and paintings but also the sculptoric gesture of arraying such things in a constellation of distances.

Additionally, students will acquire basic tools on how to render animations and specific guidance on how to deal with images and other visual contents. Methods This course is an active part in composing a report on the architectonic image. It is aimed to students which interests also deal with images and text in the form of edition and editorial. Each student will produce one image. Such an image should be considered an image of nothing but the effective keeping of distance. And one text. Such a text should be considered a written form of the image which is not euphoric and not descriptive. The minimum text submitted should be a title. Mode of examination and Examination modalities Immanent. Submitting all completed exercises is mandatory to be considered eligible for grading. Attendance and participation to all sessions is required. Additional Information Course Materials: An image bank would be provided, as well as text excerpts and layout examples. Projects from 20th to the beginning of 21th century will be discussed. Subject of Course The main reading will be a selection of articles and book chapters around the interest in relating PRESENT TENSE POETICS to CODIFICATION AND MEMORY, tbd. The weekly meetings entail: readings of approx. 30 pages The seminar is conducted as a joint course with PHD candidates from ETH Zurich. It can be joined either actively (with the rewards of 3 ECTS) or passively (as a listener, without credit points).
