Your Health Means Everything”, that’s why we offer a newly remodeled mammography suite with a comfortable setting, state of the art 3D mammography, and one on one patient care. Here at SMRMC we have two radiographers registered in mammography and breast ultrasound as part of our team.

What

does that mean for you???

You can have your initial screening mammography AND any diagnostic follow-up imaging necessary performed at the same facility, by the same familiar face. Screening results will be available for your physician the same day. During any follow-up imaging, we have a radiologist on-site that reviews the imaging, if an ultrasound is needed, that “same familiar face” is able to perform your study in the same suite, that very day, and you will receive verbal results BEFORE you leave! If you have never been a patient here before, NO WORRIES, our staff can request your prior medical records for you.

DR. ROBIN E. BOWEN, PRESIDENT

Dr. Robin E. Bowen was unanimously elected the 12th president of Arkansas Tech University by the Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees on April 22, 2014. She took office on July 1, 2014.

The institution has developed and enacted two strategic plans (2016-2022 and 2022-25), a new campus master plan and new mission and vision statements under Dr. Bowen’s leadership. Arkansas Tech has achieved significant gains in its four-year graduation rate for firsttime freshmen on the ATU campus in Russellville and the three-year graduation rate at ATU-Ozark Campus during the Bowen presidency.

During the 2020-21 academic year, Arkansas Tech achieved reaffirmation of its institutional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission for an additional 10-year period.

ATU has earned national acclaim from the CollegeNET Social Mobility Index as a leading institution in providing students with access to an enhanced economic position following graduation. Arkansas Tech ranked No. 1 in Arkansas on the Social Mobility Index seven consecutive years through 2020. In addition, ATU was named to the Colleges of Distinction Best Colleges cohort for 2021-22 and 2022-23 and U.S. News and World Report selected ATU is the No. 1 public, regional university in Arkansas as part of its 2022 college rankings.

Private support for Arkansas Tech has steadily increased during Dr. Bowen’s tenure as president. Donors provided more than $12.5 million in new gifts and pledges to the ATU Foundation during the 2021-22 fiscal year.

Dr. Bowen is the first female president of a public, fouryear university in Arkansas. She has been identified by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group as one of the Arkansas 250, an annual list of the state’s top influencers and newsmakers. The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Region IV-West presented Dr. Bowen with its 2020 President's Award, a special recognition reserved for a college or university president who has, over a sustained period of time, advanced the quality of student life on campus.

In 2017, the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville College of Education and Health Professions presented her with an outstanding alumni award in recognition of her achievements in and contributions to higher education.

She was selected as a 2016 recipient of the INSIGHT into Diversity Presidents and Chancellors Giving Back Award, the only national award that honors college presidents and chancellors for their commitment to diversity by giving back to their campus and community.

Dr. Bowen earned the 2016 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council 750 President’s Award

in recognition of the diversity and inclusion initiatives Arkansas Tech has established during her administration.

She has previously been recognized as one of AY Magazine’s Most Powerful Women, and she received the Arkansas Traveler certificate from the State of Arkansas.

Dr. Bowen is a board member for the International Women’s Forum, the Russellville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas River Valley Alliance for Economic Development and the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce.

As is obvious from her volunteer work, Dr. Bowen is passionate about advancing education, at all levels, and enhancing economic development in Arkansas. She received her Doctor of Education degree with an emphasis in higher education administration from Texas Tech University. She also holds a Master of Education degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of Arkansas and a Bachelor of Science degree in occupational therapy from the University of Kansas.

Dr. Bowen and her husband, Doug, are parents of son, Brock; and daughters, Alexa and Brynn.

At Arkansas Tech University, being first is about forging a personalized path to academic and personal achievement with the support of faculty and staff who make student access and success their No. 1 priority.

OUR MISSION

Arkansas Tech University is dedicated to student success, access, and excellence as a responsive campus community providing opportunities for progressive intellectual development and civic engagement.

Embracing and expanding upon its technological traditions, Tech inspires and empowers members of the community to achieve their goals while striving for the betterment of Arkansas, the nation, and the world.

As a result, ATU was ranked No. 1 in Arkansas on CollegeNET’s Social Mobility Index seven consecutive years. The annual rating is an indicator of a university’s success in providing graduates with a pathway to an enhanced economic standing.

Arkansas Tech is recognized as a statewide leader in STEM education. Students explore intersecting career paths made possible by more than 100 undergraduate degree programs and more than 25 graduate degree options.

ATU has continued a wave of academic innovation with several new degree programs in recent years. These include applied statistics with a data science option, computer engineering, criminal justice and criminology, cultural and geospatial studies, cybersecurity, game and interactive media design, environmental science, electrical engineering biomedical option, computer science education, chemistry education and physics education.

Without scholarships, the dream of a college education would be unattainable for many students. Arkansas Tech recently received a $4 million gift from the Windgate Foundation that will support new need-based scholarship assistance and help ATU maintain its heritage as a place of opportunity for the people of Arkansas.

Service learning opportunities, fraternity and sorority life and Norman Career Services prepare

ATU students for success in academics, careers and life. Campus and outdoor recreation activities keep ATU students’ minds and bodies strong while they build new friendships and explore their next steps.

More than 93 percent of ATU students are Arkansans, and 3 of 4 ATU graduates remain in Arkansas to apply what they have learned and help further develop the state’s economy.

CAMPUS AMBASSADOR - JERRY THE BULLDOG

Jerry the Bulldog was adopted as Arkansas Tech University campus ambassador by proclamation of the ATU Student Government Association during its meeting at the Doc Bryan Student Services Center on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013.

The action by the ATU SGA represented the re-establishment of an Arkansas Tech tradition that had been lost for more than three-quarters of a century.

The original Jerry was a daily part of life at Arkansas Tech in the mid-1930s. He was owned by William O. Young, who oversaw the business affairs of Arkansas Tech as secretary and bursar from 1917-41 and acted as interim president of the college from 1923-25; and his son, Robert A. Young Sr., who grew up to serve as purchasing agent, business manager, vice president for business affairs and vice president for administration and finance at Arkansas Tech from 1941-84 as well as interim president in 1972. Dr. Robert A. Young Jr. has continued his family’s Tech tradition by serving as president of the Arkansas Tech Foundation and as a loyal supporter of Tech athletics.

The original Jerry spent much of his time on campus at the armory (later known as the Stroupe Building) with National Guard Battery F. The students and guardsmen there adopted Jerry as one of their own.

An article from the Feb. 26, 1936, issue of the Arka Tech student newspaper stated that Jerry was “always present at anything of importance at the armory,” which was a social center of campus at that time and the site of Arkansas Tech home basketball games.

When the original Jerry passed away in late 1937, the headline in the Arka Tech proclaimed “Campus Loses Mascot in Passing of Jerry.”

The first modern Jerry, whose full name is Jerry Charles Young I, was born on July 17, 2013. He is an English bulldog. He was introduced during a Homecoming Saturday ceremony on Oct. 26, 2013, which was the 103rd anniversary of the first day of classes at Arkansas Tech.

Today, Jerry attends a variety of campus events and alumni gatherings as well as Wonder Boys and Golden Suns athletic competitions. In keeping with the original Jerry’s connection to the armed services, Jerry is escorted to many of his official functions by students from the Arkansas Tech U.S. Army ROTC program.

Visit www.atu.edu/jerry to learn more about Jerry the Bulldog.

• Nine 20-win seasons; two 30-win seasons

Dave Wilbers is a coach for life. From coaching high school football and basketball, to community college basketball and volleyball, to becoming an NCAA women’s basketball coach, coaching is in Wilbers’ blood.

Wilbers was named Tech’s sixth women’s head coach on April 30, 2007.

In the 15 years since, Arkansas Tech has remained a women’s basketball powerhouse and has posted a 328108 overall record (.751) and 204-71 record in conference play (.742). The Golden Suns have won 12 conference championships (regular season and tournament combined) under Wilbers and have reached the NCAA Division II Regionals nine times.

Wilbers has coached 34 all-conference selections, 33 all-conference academic team members, 5 conference MVP’s, six all-region picks and seven all-Americans. Wilbers was also named the GAC Coach of the Year for the 2020-21 season. Nine times, Wilbers has won 20 or more games at Tech and twice has won 30 or more. In terms of national rankings, a Wilbers-led team has been nationally-ranked at any point in a season 10 times. Among those, he has guided the Golden Suns to the top of the rankings on a pair of occasions during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.

Prior to coming to Tech, Wilbers spent six years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Oral Roberts University, an NCAA Division I school in Tulsa, Okla., that is a member of the Mid-Continent Conference. While at ORU, Wilbers was responsible for recruiting three-straight heralded recruiting classes that helped the Golden Eagles to win two Mid-Con Tournament championships, two Mid-Con

regular season titles and earn two berths in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Prior to Oral Roberts, Wilbers spent three seasons on Cindy Stein’s staff at the University of Missouri of the Big 12 Conference, as the first assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. While at Missouri, the Lady Tigers made it to the Sweet 16 of the 2001 NCAA Basketball Tournament and finished with a 22-10 overall record. In his three years in Columbia, Mo., the Lady Tigers showed consistent improvement as they won 13 games in 1988-89, 18 games in 1989-90 and 22 games in 2000-01.

Before heading to Missouri, Wilbers served as the assistant women’s basketball and head volleyball coach at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan., for five years (1993-98). While at Seward, Wilbers helped lead the women’s basketball program to an overall record of 143-21 and four Jayhawk Conference Western Division Championships (‘94, ‘96, ‘97 and ‘98). In addition, SCCC made two straight appearances (1996-97 and 1997-98) in the NJCAA Region IV Final Four.

In addition to his college coaching experience, Wilbers also spent one season (1991-92) as the head girls basketball and softball coach at Welch High School in Welch, Okla. He also served as an assistant football coach at WHS. He also spent one year (1990-91) coaching high school basketball at Putnam City High School in Putnam City, Okla.

A native of Kansas City, Mo., Wilbers is married to the former Christina Urton and the couple have two children, a daughter, Bailey and a son, Brett.

MARK DOWNEY

| @MDOWNEYATU RECORD AT TECH: 103-78 (7TH SEASON) CAREER RECORD: 269-184 (16TH SEASON)

NOTEWORTHY :

• Returning to ATU for second stint as head coach

• Initial four season stint was 2006-07 - 2009-10

• Led Wonder Boys to team-record 30 wins in final season

• Also led ATU to No. 1 ranking during that season

• Won 20 or more games five times as a head coach

Mark Downey recently completed the second season of his second stint as head coach at Arkansas Tech. Downey’s first stint saw him lead the Wonder Boys from 2006-07 to 2009-10.

That initial time patrolling the sidelines at Tech was memorable as he guided the Wonder Boys to a 77-43 mark overall with 53 of those victories coming in the final two seasons. The final season of Downey’s first stint with the Wonder Boys in 2009-10 was among the finest in program history as they won a school-record 30 games.

That year, Arkansas Tech won its first 25 games of the season, attained a No. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history, captured the GSC West Division regular season and GSC Tournament championships and earned the right to host the 2010 NCAA Division II Tournament South Regional.

Following that year, Downey returned home to his alma mater to become the head coach at the University of Charleston. He remained at Charleston for three seasons before

moving on to become the head coach at the University of West Alabama for the 2013-14 season. At Charleston, Downey went 60-29 and advanced to the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament in 2011-12.

After his one-year stint at West Alabama, where he went 17-11 overall and advanced his team to the NCAA South Region Tournament, Downey became an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level, serving as an assistant at Bowling Green State University (2014-15) and at Purdue University-Fort Wayne (2015-16 to 2017-18).

After those four seasons as an assistant coach at the DI level, Downey returned to NCAA Division II as head coach at Northeastern State University in 2017. There, he orchestrated a turnaround similar to the one he had performed at Arkansas Tech where he inherited a Wonder Boys program that had accumulated a conference record of 9-39 the previous three years and within three years had them in the NCAA Division II Tournament after winning the 2009 GSC Tournament Championship.

At Northeastern State, Downey inherited a RiverHawks program that had gone 28-81 the previous four seasons. By year two, Northeastern State was back in the postseason.

During the 2019-20 campaign, Downey’s third and final season in Tahlequah, the RiverHawks finished 18-11 overall and appeared in the quarterfinals of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament. It marked just the third 18-win season in the last 15 years at Northeastern State.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR • ABBY DAVIS • 1ST YEAR

ABBY DAVIS @ARKANSASTECH_AD

NOTEWORTHY

:

• Named full-time Athletic Director in June 2022

• Became the first-ever female AD in Tech history

• Is first female college AD at a public institution in the state of Arkansas

• Spent 18 years as head women's tennis coach at Tech; winningest coach

• Four-time GAC Coach of the Year

Abby Davis has been a fixture at Arkansas Tech for over two decades serving as a student-athlete, coach, educator, mentor and administrator. In June 2022, after three years as the department's Interim Athletic Director, Davis made history as the interim tag was taken away from her title and she became the first-ever female Athletic Director in Arkansas Tech history.

Tabbed as Interim Athletic Director in August 2019, Davis led the ATU Athletic Department through some of the most challenging circumstances imaginable.

Just a few months into her role as Interim AD, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the United States and in the middle of March 2020, collegiate sports were abruptly suspended for the remainder of the athletic year. Over the next few months, Davis worked alongside athletic leaders and medial professionals within the Great American Conference and the NCAA to find ways to facilitate a safe and healthy return to competition for all sports at Arkansas Tech.

Following a conference-wide decision to postpone fall sports in 2020 to spring 2021, Davis continued to work hard to ensure that resumption of competition would be done so in a safe and healthy manner. In January of 2021, Arkansas Tech resumed competition and practice in all sports.

Despite the challenges throughout her time as Interim Athletic Director, Davis continued to lead the athletic department forward and played an integral role in improving the department’s fundraising efforts with numerous financial gifts and pledges secured to benefit the more than 300 student-athletes at Arkansas Tech. The projects that Davis has spearheaded fundraising efforts for include facility upgrades, scholarship opportunities for studentathletes and overall enhancement of the studentathlete experience.

Davis' leadership during the unprecedented time as Interim AD also yielded success in competition as Arkansas Tech has captured Great American Conference regular season and/ or postseason championships in volleyball, women's basketball, men's golf, baseball and softball as well as an NCAA Division II Central Region title in women's golf and an NCAA Division II national championship in men's golf.

The ATU Athletic Department also continued to enjoy success in the classroom under Davis. Spring 2022 marked the 10th consecutive semester in which ATU studentathletes achieved a cumulative grade point average above 3.0.

As she was serving as Interim Athletic Director, Davis remained the head coach of Golden Suns tennis, but has stepped aside from that role now that she is full-time athletic director.

In 18 years as head coach, Davis became the winningest coach in Arkansas Tech women's tennis history with a career record of 206-154. Davis and the Golden Suns posted a winning record in 13 of her last 15 seasons. The 2021-22 season marked the 14th consecutive year in which Arkansas Tech played postseason tennis.

Under Davis, Arkansas Tech claimed three regular-season conference titles and one conference tournament championship, including both championships in the inaugural year of the Great American Conference. The Suns also recorded a 2-2 record in NCAA regional play.

Davis coached over 50 all-conference picks, three conference player of the year selections and five conference freshman of the year honorees. She also was a four-time Great American Conference Coach of the Year.

Off the court, Arkansas Tech was named to the ITA All-Academic Team five of her last six years, and over 50 student-athletes have received conference academic honors. The Golden Suns also represented the Central Region with the ITA Community Service Award in 2017 and 2018, totaling 635 hours of community service.

2022-23 BASKETBALL

In the summer of 2019, Davis was named chair of the NCAA National Tennis Committee and served until the conclusion of the 2021-22 year.

Davis' tenure as coach followed a four-year run as a Golden Suns tennis player, where she captured allGulf South Conference honors.

A native of Paris, Ark., Davis lives in Russellville.

SPORTS MEDICINE

Sports Medicine is an integral part of any athletics program, and the same is true at Arkansas Tech University. It is the sports medicine team consisting of professional doctors and trainers and the athletes themselves that help Tech play at its physical best week after week.

Brett “Duke” Waldon is entering his 12th year at Arkansas Tech as the head athletic trainer and associate athletic director. In his duties at Tech, Waldon is responsible for providing medical coverage for all of the school’s 11 men’s and women’s athletic teams, including serving as the athletic trainer for the Wonder Boys football, men’s basketball, and the men’s and women’s golf teams.

Waldon, who is a native of Fort Smith, Ark., returned to Tech after spending two years as the head athletic trainer at Langston University. In his first stint at Tech, Waldon spent three years as an assistant athletic trainer, where he served as the athletic trainer for both the football and men’s basketball teams. He began his athletic career as an assistant athletic trainer at Ouachita Baptist University.

Waldon is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA), the Arkansas Athletic Trainers’ Association (AATA), he is also certified in CPR/First Aid/AED and is also a certified member with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). He received his masters degree in May 2006 in sports administration from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark., and earned his bachelor of science degree in recreation and sports medicine from Henderson State in 1996.

Both Dr. Robin Kirby and Dr. Neylon Pilkington at in their second year as the Wonder Boys' team physicians. Dr. Kirby, a native of Russellville, graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and then attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock. SPORTS MEDICINE

It was Sept. 21, 1968, when Dr. Stan Teeter first stood on the sideline of an Arkansas Tech football game as the school’s official team doctor. Prior to his retirement in December of 2000, Teeter spent 154 Saturday afternoons or nights on the same sideline – a span of some 33 years.

He examined some 6,000 student-athletes over the years and played a major role in keeping those young men and women healthy. As a result, Tech’s athletic teams won 48 conference championships during his time as team doctor.

Teeter practiced in Russellville between 1965-2000 and he was a full-time family practitioner with Millard-Henry Clinic. Before joining Millard-Henry Clinic, he served five years as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy.

Before his retirement in 2000, Teeter was selected by the readers of The Courier as “Best Doctor” in the Arkansas River Valley. In 2009, Arkansas Tech University dedicated the Stanley D. Teeter Training Center in the Hull Building after Dr. Teeter.

It is the goal of the sports medicine-athletic training staff to provide the student-athletes, participating in intercollegiate athletics at Arkansas Tech University, with the highest standard of medical care possible both on the field and in the athletic training facilities.

The health of every student-athlete at Arkansas Tech University is the primary concern of the Tech Sports Medicine-Athletic Training staff, a group that covers every facet of comprehensive healthcare. From emergency medical care throughout the functional return to play, the sports medicine-athletic training staff serves the many needs of the Tech student-athletes. The staff is constantly updating knowledge on the latest in sports medicine and athletic training techniques through seminars and clinics.

Under the guidance of Head Athletic Trainer Brett “Duke” Waldon and assistant Cesiley Rideau, the Tech sports medicine-athletic training staff offers the most comprehensive health care with a special emphasis placed on injury prevention methods. The sports medicine-athletic training staff offers daily services and care for all Tech student-athletes. The Athletic Training staff are all certified members of the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATA) and Arkansas-licensed practitioners in cooperation with orthopedic and internal medicine physicians.

Tech student-athletes receive highly specialized medical care when required from our team physicians Dr. Robin Kirby, Dr. Neylon Pilkinton and Dr. Bruce Brown. Aside from our team physicians, Tech studentathletes have access to the Tech Student Health Center located in Dean Hall, as well as St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Millard-Henry Clinic, and other consulting specialty physicians and health care facilities located in the area. They provide a comprehensive team approach in the delivery of health care services to the Tech student-athletes.
