The Cover The bronze Boxer of Quirinal* (also known as the Terme Boxer) is a Hellenistic Greek sculpture dated around 330 B.C. He is nude and he is sitting still wearing his caestus, a type of leather hand-wrap. The statue is a masterpiece of Hellenistic athletic professionalism, with a top-heavy overmuscled torso, scarred and bruised face, cauliflower ears, broken nose, and a mouth suggesting broken teeth. The statue depicts a muscular athlete approaching his middle age. He has a thick beard and a full head of curly hair. The pugilist has the slanted, drooping brows that bespeak torn nerves. The forehead is piled with scar tissue. The statue was displayed in the United States for the first time from June to July 2013 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City as part of the "Year of Italian Culture in the United States". During the time of its display the New York Magazine published a full page dedication to the special qualities and attributes of the statue.
The fingers and toes were worn from being rubbed by passers-by in ancient times, which suggested that the Boxer was carefully buried to preserve its talismanic value when the Baths were abandoned after the Goths cut the aqueducts that fed them. *Quirinal – One of the Seven Hills of Rome

I am a member of the ‘Wise Generation’ also known as the Senior Citizens. Not fully aware of what my new duties are, and until someone tells me different… this is what I do:
5 AM – I get up every morning, drink FRAPPE black coffee without sugar, and gaze the sky as the night meets the day… this is the time when I get all of my bright ideas…
7 AM – I walk down hill one kilometer, link up with a friend, and drive to the ocean. On my left there are mountains, and on the right the vast blue ocean… a splendid sight!
8 AM - Immersed in water up to the wait… o o o o o
600 - Kicks Walk – 500 Meters 400 - Jumps Stretch in the shallow water Walk – 500 Meters
We eat breakfast while gazing the sea, and drag ourselves to the car for the drive back home which includes one kilometer; this time uphill…
12 Noon – My day now starts…
Training Season “kicks-off” at Okikukai Hellas Hombu
Training season started at the Okikukai Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do Dojo in Volos, Greece. Old and new students returned to Dojo’s regular schedule which is three to four times a week. Our Kancho, Michael Grigoris, Yon-dan Jun Shihan, welcomed everyone and wished us a good, productive year, in best spirit and health.
Grigoris Sensei (in black karate gi) and his assistants, Sempai Kokova Eleni and Antonis Tzounis, with the rest of the students plan to attend local festivities and social events in order to promote Uechi-Ryu Karate Do to the greater community.
Plans for the new season also include a seminar with Popovic Sensei and, possibly, a visit to Serbia’s Hombu Dojo in Belgrade. Training among students of the three Uechi Ryu Karate Dojo are planned for this year also. We have a strong conviction of the benefits of cooperative work, exchange of knowledge and experience in order to broaden our vision. For this reason Okikukai Hellas Hombu is always open to invitations, visits and student exchanges. Text and Photo submitted by Antonis Tzounis

Bubishi students return from summer vacation…
With a broken arm, first to return was Nikos Theodorou. Unable to train we dedicated two hours to Okinawa karate discussion and focused on Mark Bishop’s book ‘Okinawa Karate’. There are always ways to continue learning even if we are physically handicapped… September 8th.

‘Plaka Dojo’ came alive when we held our first class! Alexandros Marios Sarris sported a cast on his hand due to a broken finger
acquired in a summer camp basketball game. Nevertheless, Alexandros was a real sport and joined our training in a limited capacity. The doctor ordered absolutely no training, so, Alexandros would sit, watch, keep score, and work a timer with his other hand… reluctantly, his mom agreed… September 14th.
We had an amazing visit when Fujiwara Seiichi Sensei and his wife Fujiwara Chizuko san visited Greece for the very first time! Accompanying the duo was none other than Leo Lipinski Sensei, Seiwakai representative of Europe… September 14th.
Dimitris Lemonis rose to the occasion and oversaw the entire logistics of transport and entertainment… my job was to keep them laughing…
Leo Lipinski Sensei had lots of water… and I, had lots of… wine! Who looks happier?
We had a nice time…
