Arts Umbrella INSPIRING KIDS FOR LIFE THROUGH THE ARTS At Arts Umbrella, children and youth learn to reflect on their world and themselves, to venture into self-inquiry, and to use their own voice to describe, articulate and develop ideas. Since 1979, Arts Umbrella has been fulfilling its mission to inspire kids for life through the arts. In the past year alone, inspirational learning opportunities in visual, media and performing arts were delivered to 22,000 children and youth through tuition-based programs and free-of-charge Outreach programs. Arts Umbrella is founded on the idea that arts education plays a critical role in healthy childhood development, and that all children should be granted the same opportunity for growth. With more and more Arts Umbrella programs happening throughout Metro Vancouver, more children are benefitting from access to high quality arts education. As a not-for-profit organization, Arts Umbrella relies on the generosity of the community to deliver inspiring arts programs year after year, to as many children as possible.

message from CEO & board chair INSPIRATION IS AT THE CORE OF OUR BUSINESS It is hard to believe that 2014 marks Arts Umbrella’s 35th year. As with every worthwhile journey, ours has been filled with incredible successes and chances to learn. We’ve met amazing people along the way and taken every opportunity to develop our craft. Our experience is not unlike the creative journey undertaken by the students who fill the halls of our four vibrant locations. Young minds come to Arts Umbrella to experience the arts, and leave with a better sense of self, alongside the techniques necessary for creative growth. The Arts Umbrella journey has also been one of self-exploration and development. Over the years, we’ve expanded our programs to engage diverse interests and talents including innovative offerings such as Eco-Art and Making Music Digitally. Our new locations in Surrey are alive with creativity, bringing arts education to even more neighbourhoods in need. Arts Umbrella’s growing community involvement, from a fun presence at public events to our dynamic array of fundraisers, brings our passion for the arts beyond our youthful studios and into the lives of those young at heart. Though change and growth drive our ongoing journey, the connection to our roots is what keeps us on course. Through continued work with the best local artists and instructors, we ensure the highest quality arts education. Our focus on technique and process ensures each student a unique and inspired experience. And with generous supporters at our side, we are able to pursue our commitment to accessibility through outreach programs, community partnerships, performances and subsidized classes touching the lives of over 22,000 students each year who deserve the chance to experience the arts.

how arts umbrella works ABOUT ARTS UMBRELLA At Arts Umbrella we believe that the arts can change young people’s lives for the better. When children connect with the arts, they develop the capacity for personal expression that helps them to find their place in the world.

Self-confidence, independence, teamwork, patience, and giving and receiving feedback are all part of what is learned in an Arts Umbrella class. Classes inspire students to explore and appreciate the arts not only as creators

and performers but also as members of an audience. Most importantly, Arts Umbrella is about creating a difference: the type of difference that can result when encouragement, support, creativity and fun come together to change a child’s life.

INSIDE ARTS UMBRELLA STUDIOS All Arts Umbrella studios are places of magic, inspiration and learning. With classes available for young artists of all skill levels, children and youth can develop new skills and hone interests while discovering more about the power

of the imagination and their unique view of the world. Students are taught that art making is a process, one that can be undertaken at any point in their lives, and that skills can

constantly be improved. At Arts Umbrella students are asked to push boundaries in their thinking, to be creative, critical thinkers, and become an active member in the communities they live in.

TEACHING THE PRACTICE OF ART – ARTS UMBRELLA INSTRUCTORS An inspirational instructional staff is the cornerstone of the Arts Umbrella experience. Caring, artistic individuals provide the technique and inspiration to empower students to be artists, make their own decisions, and develop their own vision.

All Arts Umbrella classes are led by practicing artists who are invested in teaching young minds and creating a vibrant community. By relating the student’s work to their own personal investigation of the artistic process, instructors in all disciplines bring a richness and depth to the studio experience.

This type of guided inquiry and learning creates an environment of positive interaction and development for all students, regardless of skill level. There is a magic that happens when young learners can see that their instructors care deeply not only about the subject that is being taught, but also about the learning process of each student.

Arts Umbrella’s Outreach programs harness the magic, experience and expertise of Arts Umbrella programs and bring free-of-charge, high quality arts education directly to schools and community and neighbourhood centres. Accessibility is one of Arts Umbrella’s key mandates; overcoming barriers to participation and addressing vulnerability factors means more children can access the life-long benefits of arts education. Through Outreach programs, children and youth who may not otherwise have access receive the opportunity to explore the arts as creators, audiences and performers. By working directly with schools and community service providers, Arts Umbrella ensures programs meet the needs of the children in each specific community, from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood. DANCE IT OUT

Weekly instruction in elements of performing and visual arts helps students develop creative expression and self-confidence. Working in groups supports positive peer connections, while exploring creative expression and the creative process.

This program provides young immigrants the opportunity to develop creative expression skills and build self-confidence through play, movement music and art making. The safe and supportive environment focuses on working together and learning positive modes of expression.

Fun and exciting dance instruction fosters balance, coordination, fitness, creative expression and teamwork. Students learn basic dance movements in a variety of styles, including hip hop and contemporary dance.

This engaged program is available to priority after-school programs.

This engaged program is available to children and families going through a settlement program at Immigrant Services Society in Vancouver.

COMMUNITY CONNECT THROUGH ART Dance and Visual Arts Engaged Ages 5–12

This program is run in conjunction with Immigrant Services Society of BC and SD 36 English Language Learner Welcome Centre. Weekly classes in dance and visual arts equip students with the ability to express themselves through movement, music and hands-on art projects. Students gain self-confidence, problem-solving skills and positive peer and cultural connections. This engaged program is available to children of recently immigrated families attending various schools in Surrey, as determined in the Fall.

DRAMATIC ROOTS Creative Drama Engaged Ages 7–12

Presented in conjunction with Immigrant Services Society of BC and SD 36 Community Schools Partnership, this weekly class provides the basics of expression in Creative Drama. Through theatre games and exercises, students develop positive peer connections, self-confidence, cultural connections, and expand their English language knowledge.

Dance Engaged Ages 5–11

This engaged program is available to Grades K–5 students of Henderson Annex Elementary South East Vancouver.

DRAMATIC FLAIR Theatre Engaged Ages 5–10

This program introduces elements of creating character to students through games, improvisation and scene work. The basics of theatre vocabulary, story-telling and other elements of the ‘art of pretending’ foster confidence, and help students develop skills in decision-making and the respect for self and others that are required to work as part of a group. This program is open to participants in the Kiwassa Children’s After-School program in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood in Vancouver.

This engaged program is available to children of recently immigrated families attending K.B. Woodward Elementary in Surrey.

Dance, Theatre and Visual Arts Engaged Ages 3–4 This program provides young learners with broad experiences in many artistic disciplines, allowing them to discover their interests. Through learning how to express themselves in different ways, the program supports children’s ability to reach ageappropriate developmental milestones. HSBC ARTS UMBRELLA ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM Theatre and Visual Arts Workshop Grades 1–7

This program helps children develop critical thinking skills and an awareness of environmental issues through art projects. Students respond artistically to an environmental topic and explore their own impact on the planet. The workshops include elements of theatrical performance and visual arts, and helps children gain skills in personal expression. This workshop program is open to priority elementary schools in Metro Vancouver. Participating classes are chosen by lottery. MOVE, GROOVE AND MAKE Dance and Visual Arts Engaged Ages 2–4

Through movement, music and art making, young learners develop their imaginations and learn ways to express it. This program supports the development of gross and fine motor skills, coordination and balance in early learners of all skill and ability levels. This engaged program takes place at the Waterside Child Development Centre in East Vancouver.

OPEN STAGE YOUTH Theatre Engaged Ages 7–12

This eight-month program meets every week, and provides students with a safe environment to learn the basics of theatre. Elements of improvisation, movement, clowning and storytelling give students tools to enhance their self-confidence, ability to work as part of a group, and express themselves. Each week, a nutritional snack is provided. At the end of the year, a public performance is held for family and friends. This program is open to Grades 3–7 students of Strathcona Elementary, Seymour Elementary and Queen Alexandra Elementary schools. SUPPORTED BY:

OPEN STAGE TEEN

PERFORMANCE ARTS SCHOOL TOURS Theatre and Dance Live Performance Grades K–12

Thousands of Metro Vancouver students from select inner city schools experience performances by the Arts Umbrella Dance Company, and the Junior, Senior and Laboratory Theatre Troupes. After each show, students can further their learning through a discussion with the performers. These shows bring live performance directly to schools, and can foster a lifelong appreciation and a greater understanding of the arts. Participating schools are chosen based on their vulnerability factors, as determined through consultations with school boards. RIO TINTO ALCAN VAN GO & STAGE COACH Theatre and Visual Arts Workshop Grades K–7

Students learn to sketch, draw, paint and act in response to a thought-provoking theme, developing critical thinking skills, self-expression techniques, and a better ability to work with others as well as independently. This workshop program is provided to select schools in Metro Vancouver, as defined through consultation with school boards. Preference is given to schools that would normally not have access to programs. Chosen schools will be contacted in Fall 2013. SUPPORTED BY:

The Focus Foundation of BC offers a variety of support services for youth, city-wide. This weekly program provides a fun and safe environment for students to develop self-expression skills through the visual, media and performing arts. The basics of drawing, painting, photography, media arts and theatre help students discover new interests and methods of expressing their own ideas through art. An inspired introduction to self-expression for children ages 2 to 6, Early Learning classes provide young learners with their first experiences with the arts, at a key point in their cognitive development. Early Learning (ages 2–3) Locations: GI Q7 In this class, parents take part in the activities! Play and model various exercises for your child. Elements of dance are subtly introduced in a playful environment, where children are taught to move in different ways using imagery, songs and props. Early Learning (ages 3–4) Early Learning (ages 4–5) Locations: GI Q7 SS In these classes, group dances, percussion games and choreography encourage coordination, balance and self-confidence, providing the foundation for future dance expression. Through improvisation and imagery exercises, children learn to enjoy movement and to express themselves. Although the emphasis is still on play, classes progressively prepare them for the more structured Ballet class of the General Program Level 1. Basic dance vocabulary is taught and provides an introduction to various dance genres, from ballet, to contemporary dance and tap.

Early Learning (ages 2–3) Locations: GI SS This class offers a supportive and fun learning environment for parents to support and share with their children while tapping into their imagination and creativity. They experience the joy of creating with materials such as clay, paper, watercolours, oils and chalk pastels. Each project is open-ended and is based around a theme, allowing children full creative freedom while introducing the foundation of visual arts.

Early Learning (ages 3–5) Locations: GI SS SC Young artists begin to explore art on their own, without a parent. They learn to elaborate on their project and respect their classmates, instructors and their materials. They have fun creating their own art projects using a variety of materials. This can include painting, printmaking techniques and multimedia materials including found objects. They experiment with two- and three-dimensional artwork, all in an environment of creative exploration and encouragement.

Early Learning (ages 3–5) Locations: GI This unique half-day program combines the world of dance and visual arts in a playful and collaborative package! Young artists will learn the foundations of expressive movement and visual arts through supportive and creative exploration. Instructors will offer a cohesive, thematic program including play-based creative movement, musical awareness, drawing, painting and multimedia art techniques, inviting students to explore concepts through different artistic disciplines. The program includes a transition where children will meet up between classes to have a snack and move smoothly into the next discipline. Explorations in various art forms – from painting and drawing, to architecture, photography and fashion design – teach students how to represent their ideas and the world around them in two and three dimensions. Students are introduced, in various levels of depth, to elements and principles of visual and applied arts. They explore colour, line, form, shape, space, texture, balance, rhythm, pattern, contrast, focus and composition by using a wide variety of materials and techniques. The history and background of visual and applied arts and the work of important artists are explored and used as a foundation to understanding the arts, as well as inspiration for the students’ own work. Students also learn practical skills and behaviours in an art class, from setting up and cleaning up a work space, to safety while respecting others and their materials.

Her background includes a BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and a BEd from UBC. She has won multiple awards, including the Kathleen Elliott Memorial Scholarship, Brissenden Scholarship in Art Education, Jason Singh Memorial Award, Moving Towards Independence Award, and the Citizenship Award. This competitive, juried program is for aspiring artists who are seriously considering postsecondary studies in visual arts. Committed participants, with a passion and a talent for visual arts, gain insight to an exhibiting artist's professional life and the dedication required to succeed. Receive mentorship and encouragement to explore unconventional ideas and develop critical thinking skills in art making, as you create conceptually innovative and aesthetically engaging works. Projects created in this class build portfolio content and works for public exhibition. A series of professional guest artists bring their techniques and ideas of art making to the class, enriching your understanding of contemporary art practice. Intermediate (ages 10–12) Locations: GI Cameras, film and a fully-equipped dark room are included. This class helps you develop your technical skills with a manual 35mm camera. You learn about the history of photography and how pinhole cameras, photograms, cyanotypes and hand-colouring were part of the evolution of creating still images. Field trips on Granville Island provide ideas and inspiration from the natural and built environment.

ARCHITECTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI This class is about learning to understand the relationship between architectural and urban design and the environment. Basic concepts of environmental design—energy conservation, water management, sustainable landscape, car culture critique and sustainable rating systems, such as LEED—are all discussed. Individual model-making projects and a larger-scale group project help bring the theories and information to life.

NEW! JEWELRY: ACCESSORIZE YOUR FASHION LINE

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI This course will focus on fabricating jewelry made from things not normally used in jewelry. Sheet plastics, found objects, fabric, paper, plastics, paint, rope, clay, and metals will be sawed, pierced, filed and assembled into constructed forms and finished pieces. The work made will enable the student to think outside of the box, reinterpret process and explore alternative methods to traditional techniques in ornamentation. The body of work produced will serve the students well in complimenting their fashion collections. The main objective in this course is to develop a student’s capacity to problem solve independently, and make beautiful contemporary art jewelery.

FASHION FOUNDATION

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI Prerequisite: Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration, or equivalent with portfolio review by instructor. Take your inspiration, illustrations and knowledge of fashion design to build on your portfolio and explore pattern making and create a prototype of your illustrations and designs. This class will also focus on building knowledge of designers and fashion history, including local and independent designers in the community.

FINE ART STUDIO

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI It is recommended that students have previous experience in a visual or applied arts medium. This studio helps you build or expand your own portfolio with experienced mentors. It helps you understand what to include in your portfolio and what to expect in the first year foundation class at an art school. You will be guided through experimentations and explorations of techniques based on your own ideas and your own creative voice and expression. Explore concepts such as composition, portraiture, self-inquiry and theme development, and create in two and three dimensions with painting, drawing, collage and sculpture. Develop a portfolio for admission to a post-secondary institution or the Buschlen Mowatt Visual Arts Scholarship Program.

NEW! INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE: THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Teen (ages 13-19) Locations: GI This course will introduce you to the elements of design that make up our interior spaces. We will experience the impact that form, volume, scale, texture, colour, light, pathways and viewpoints have on the spaces in which we exist everyday. Through hands on exploration and the study of real life examples, you will become familiar with the close relationship between people and space.

MIXED MEDIA AND SCULPTURE

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI Enter the world of two- and three-dimensional art forms and develop your skills and technique using the materials and methods of sculptural design. Create your own pieces both with traditional techniques and experimental methods with such materials as wood, paint, clay, papier mâché and found objects.

PHOTOGRAPHY: PROJECTS AND PORTFOLIO

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI Cameras, film and a fully equipped dark room are included. Begin or continue your artistic exploration of blackand-white photography with a focus on shooting, developing the film and creating black-and-white photographic images. You will also be introduced to digital photography and how to download, manipulate, edit and print photographic images with the use of Photoshop. You will participate in discussions about your work and your classmates’ work, and give a small presentation on a photographer who inspires you.

MIXED MEDIA AND CLAY SCULPTURE

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI Apply the elements and principles of art to convey your sense of aesthetic, emotion, energy, and interpretation of the creative process. In this class, you will examine the relationship between experimentation and interpretation, the influences of art history, and personal experience. Critical thinking and critiquing skills will be enhanced through working cooperatively and individually on various projects that function aesthetically and technically with various media including clay. All clay projects will be glazed and/or handpainted.

PHOTOGRAPHY: IMAGE MAKING

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI Cameras, film and a fully equipped dark room are included. This class begins with the basics of black-andwhite photography, as you shoot with a 35mm manual camera. Develop film and create original prints in the dark room. In the process, you learn about lens selection, exposure, depth-of-field, composition and presentation.

Media Arts students learn how to use new, digital media for creative expression and discovery. Students develop an understanding of the fundamental visual arts concepts, such as line, colour and shape, as they explore their own artistic voice through new media.

COMPUTER ANIMATION

Intermediate (ages 9–12) Locations: GI Previous computer experience recommended but not required.

Students are also introduced to composition, rhythm and timing, as well as interactive and non-linear design. Techniques of media art production, such as storyboarding, image development and editing, further their ability to express their creative ideas in new and innovative ways.

Get familiar with animation tools such as Adobe Flash and sound software such as GarageBand, and Photo Booth. Learn to use a Wacom Tablet while you explore important aspects of animation, such as timing, stretch and squash. You will also learn about timeline, frame rate and how to make frame-by-frame animation. Through several animation exercises, you create a 30-second final project using the skills you have learned.

You take pictures with digital cameras and web cams, and then transfer images onto the computer and/or download them from the internet. You record and create sounds on the computer and learn basic animation techniques. The class covers the use of the digital camera’s manual functions, and how to achieve proper exposure using aperture, shutter speed and ISO as your tools. Composition and white balance are also covered, and field trips and photo critique will help in developing your own expression even further.

Participants with a passion for animation, a talent for storytelling and commitment to the program, will be able to develop a strong portfolio piece for post-secondary school application. This full scholarship program concludes with a group exhibition at Electronic Arts. Applications must include a portfolio, a letter of interest, and an artist statement. Year-long theatre programs are for students ready for a larger commitment to the art and craft of theatrical and musical performance. From September to June, you will work with industry professionals to take your skills to the next level, in preparation for further study, including the PreProfessional programs.

In this class, you develop critiquing skills, informing and enhancing your own work, and the work of the group.

NEW! STAGE FIGHTING: WITH ACADEMIE DUELLO

Teen (ages 13–19) Locations: GI The art of stage combat makes a performer into an action hero or a credible victim. Safety and optimum audience effect go hand-in-glove, and every actor will sometimes need a slap in a drama, a sword fight in Shakespeare, or a massive battlefield in a war movie. Academie Duello's David McCormick teaches the fundamental safety techniques, and how to create the illusion of violence for an exciting scene. By the end of this class, you will incorporate your skills into a choreographed scene including slaps and punches, as well as sword fighting for the stage.

By the end of this intensive, you will be able to identify the wants and needs of a character, and use various tactics to portray them.

YOUTH THEATRE INTENSIVE

You will experiment with emotional and physical portrayals of a character, learning to trust your own emotional experience and expression. You will also learn techniques such as Laban, and explore other styles of theatre, such as mime and mask.

pre-professional theatre program This intensive, year-long training program is for aspiring professional actors. Participants are chosen by audition to take part in classes and troupes that emphasize teamwork, discipline, creative input and cooperation. Students work with industry professionals, and mount a production in May, preparing them to continue on into post-secondary training, or the workplace. Many past students of this program have enrolled in post-secondary theatre programs or are now working as professional actors. Troupe fees include class time, extra rehearsal hours, technical rehearsals, headshot sitting fee, costume fee, Troupe jacket and tickets for three theatrical productions throughout the year. All Pre-Professional Program options require an audition and a full year commitment. Auditions for 2013/14 programs take place May 26, 2013, with call-backs and second-round auditions on September 8, 2013. The year culminates with public performances at Waterfront Theatre, as part of Expressions (see P23).

JUNIOR THEATRE TROUPE

Pre-professional (ages 13–16) Locations: GI Develop the on and off-stage skills, and team spirit necessary for touring and producing a play. In addition to honing your performance skills, you will learn about other staging elements, including lighting, sound and a touring set. Fall session is dedicated to intensive training in movement, voice, improvisation, group scene studies and script work. Winter and Spring sessions are dedicated to mounting a professional production that tours to elementary schools across Metro Vancouver. The year culminates with public performances at Waterfront Theatre, as part of Expressions (see P23).

MUSICAL THEATRE TROUPE

Pre-professional (ages 13–19) Locations: GI Work with industry professionals in music, dance and theatre to build and polish your audition repertoire and gain valuable experience through intensive training in ensemble and solo performances. Make the connection between singing and storytelling for yourself and your audience, as you hone your skills and musical theatre performance. Develop your actor’s voice while learning in-depth singing and acting technique. Complete the year with public performances at the Waterfront Theatre. MASTER CLASS SERIES

(ages 13–21) Locations: GI SS This series of workshops is meant for serious students who would like to explore the many aspects of theatre arts training with industry professionals. This is your chance to get a taste of the type of in-depth training offered at post-secondary institutions in an intensive, three-hour session. These workshops allow you to further your learning in a safe and supportive environment with like-minded students. Arts Umbrella’s Dance program is internationally recognized for producing highly employable graduates who are dancing in companies around the world. Our high quality training develops the whole dancer, stressing technique, strength, intellectual and artistic expression, with a focus on health and wellness. The program has a strong foundation in Classical Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary dance forms. Program options range from early learning creative movement classes to career-level dance training, including half-day academic and graduate-level programs. Arts Umbrella also offers a dance diploma through Vancouver Community College. Program placement is based on age and ability, as assessed through faculty placements or audition, as specified for each program level.

artistic director, ARTEMIS GORDON Artemis is Ballet Mistress and Artistic Director of the Arts Umbrella Dance Program and the Arts Umbrella Dance Company. She is a graduate of the National Ballet School’s Teacher Training program, and has taught at professional training schools throughout Canada. Artemis has been Artistic Director at Arts Umbrella for more than 20 years and has fostered and nurtured the professional training program, setting the high standard that Arts Umbrella is known for today.

general program Entry into the General Program is based on age and academic grade. No audition is required as student advancement is made by instructor placement. Classes take place after school and on weekends. This ballet-based program teaches self-expression through the fundamentals of dance technique. Students learn to appreciate and enjoy movement, musicality, rhythmical awareness and movement vocabulary. The General Program provides many avenues into explorations of dance study, including programs strictly for boys, programs for beginner teens, and programs for students looking to study dance recreationally. Intensive programs are also available for those who would like to pursue more rigorous training. All students have the opportunity to explore dance as artists, performers, audience members and professionals. Students who wish to take their dance training to the next level, may audition for the Professional Program as early as Grade 5.

LEVELS 1–8

Ages 6–14 (Academic Grades 1–8) All levels are required to take at least one Ballet class per week. Other dance training techniques such as Jazz, Character, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Conditioning and Cecchetti Exam Preparation are introduced as early as Level 2. Younger students attend 1 to 2 classes per week, gradually increasing to 4 to 6 classes for the higher levels. After completing Level 8, students may continue their dance training with the Teen Intensive Program (TIP). Students may audition for the Professional Program as early as Grade 5.

INTRO TO DANCE LEVELS 1–2

Ages 10–16 (Academic Grades 5–10) Students with little or no dance experience are taught basic movements and principles of technique with a focus on alignment, flexibility and strength development. Students take 1 to 2 classes per week, after school or on weekends. Dancers in this program may transition into the General Program by instructor placement. This ballet-based program also introduces elements of modern and jazz.

NEW! BEGINNER TEEN BOYS (BTB)

Ages 12 and up (Academic Grade 7 and up) The class introduces elements of Ballet technique, and teaches many aspects of the art of movement, with a focus on alignment and strength. This male-only class allows you to develop dance skills and proficiency, in preparation for joining gender-mixed programs.

TEEN INTENSIVE PROGRAM (TIP) LEVELS 1–3

Ages 13–15 years (Academic Grades 8–9) This program is for advanced dance students who wish to maintain a high level of physical training while adhering to a standard academic timetable. It is designed to develop technique, strength and artistic expression. Classes include Ballet, Jazz, Cecchetti Exam Preparation, Pointe Work, Contemporary and Repertoire. Students are required to take 5 to 7 classes per week. Those wishing to pursue professional training may audition for the half-day Professional Program.

BOYS ONLY LEVELS 1–4

Ages 6–12 (Academic Grades 1–6) Boys are introduced to the physical elements of dance and learn aspects of movement, rhythm and musicality in a supportive and active environment. They learn appropriate dance class conduct that is based on self-discipline and the ability to work with others. Students take 1 to 2 classes per week, after school or on weekends. Boys may transition into the gender-mixed General Program levels at any time, where they will continue to learn movement principles in Ballet, Character, Jazz and Contemporary techniques. professional program Entry into all elements of the Professional Program is by audition only. Classes take place on weekdays, five days a week. The Professional Program is designed for the committed and talented dance student. Higher levels are for advanced dancers seriously considering a professional dance career. This balletbased program demands high levels of physical strength, technique and discipline. In addition to regular classes, Arts Umbrella professional-level dance students are given the opportunity to work with local and internationally renowned guest artists and to perform worldclass choreography through participation in the Arts Umbrella Dance Company. PRE-ELEMENTARY LEVELS

Ages 11–13 (Academic Grades 6–7) Classes take place after school and on weekends. This after school program introduces students to the rigour and physical demands of professional training with a main focus on ballet. The committed student will participate in 12–16 hours of dance instruction a week, receiving in-depth training with an emphasis on technique, vocabulary and style.

ELEMENTARY TO SENIOR LEVELS

Ages 13–18 (Academic Grades 8–12) Classes take place on weekdays, during the day. This advanced half-day program is for teens seriously considering a professional dance career. Students train five mornings or afternoons a week, up to 20 hours weekly. To complete their high school courses, students must either be home-schooled, or have their high school provide a half-day academic program for them. King George Secondary and Magee Secondary are high schools that provide a half-day Sports and Arts program (SPARTS). SPARTS offers students in Academic grades 8–12 the opportunity to complete their academic requirements in preparation for secondary school graduation and post-secondary entrance, while allowing them to maintain a rigorous dance training schedule. Students wishing to enrol in the half-day program must attend the audition on January 26, 2014.

GRADUATE PROGRAM

Two year post-secondary program. This program provides high-level dance training towards a professional career in dance. Applicants must be at an advanced Ballet level with a preprofessional background. Students receive between 35–50 hours a week of dance instruction at Arts Umbrella. Daily classes include Ballet training, Pointe or Men’s Work, Pas de Deux, Composition, Improvisation, Classical Variations, Cecchetti Exam Preparation, Body Conditioning, Health, Flamenco, Jazz and Contemporary techniques. The program also features residencies with renowned guest choreographers and rehearsals and performances with the Arts Umbrella Dance Company.

The unique Dance Diploma partnership between Arts Umbrella and Vancouver Community College furthers the Graduate program with academic classes in arts and culture, rhythm training and professional business skills through VCC. After successful program completion, students earn a post-secondary diploma, granted under the authority of the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education. Graduates of the diploma program who choose to further pursue their academic education, may be able to transfer some course credits to a certificate, diploma or degree program, and should contact the receiving institution for details on the transfer process.

As of September 2012, Simon Fraser University (SFU) will allow Dance Diploma program graduates who are accepted into the Dance program in Contemporary Arts at SFU to transfer 30 credits in Fine Performing Arts course work, as well as elective credits as articulated in the British Columbia Transfer System.

ARTS UMBRELLA DANCE COMPANY Ages 12 and up Members are students of the Professional Program, as selected by the Artistic Director, Dance. Established in 1985, the Arts Umbrella Dance Company provides young dancers with broadbased performance opportunities and technical training, in preparation for post-secondary dance education, or a career in a professional adult company. Past Company members have gone on to perform in companies around the world. The Company includes senior and apprentice ensembles that train, rehearse and perform new and innovative works by locally and internationally acclaimed guest choreographers. Company members perform in more than 15 shows a year, and have toured to Montreal, Toronto, New York, Japan and Holland. The Company instills a sense of commitment and discipline and teaches good work habits. Participation in the Company is supplemental to other program requirements, and requires full commitment from its members and their families. Company members must dedicate 6–10 hours per week to rehearsals, plus 4–10 hours per month to performances. MARQUITA LESTER Senior Ballet Instructor Marquita trained at the National Ballet School and danced with The National Ballet of Canada, where she later returned to complete the Teacher’s Training Program. Ms. Lester was Assistant to the Artistic Director of Alberta Ballet, and then made her indelible mark on Ballet British Columbia over a 19 year period as Ballet Mistress and Associate Director, working closely with Artistic Director John Alleyne. She has been a member of the Dance Faculty at Arts Umbrella since 2002. SABRA PERRY Ballet Instructor Sabra has performed in works by George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Thaddeus Davis, Ulysses Dove, Martha Graham, Nicolo Fonte, William Forsythe, Jodie Gates, Jae Man Joo, Desmond Richardson, and Juan Rodriguez. Sabra was a faculty member at Ballet Academy East in New York, a returning guest teacher at Alabama Dance Theater and the Parksville Ballet School. She holds a BA in dance from SUNY/ Empire State College in New York, and been teaching at Arts Umbrella since 2012. LYNN SHEPPARD Company Mistress, Senior Jazz Instructor Lynn trained at the Gladys Forrester School of Dance in Toronto and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. As a professional, Lynn danced for Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Judith Marcuse's Repertory Dance Company of Canada and JOE INK, where she worked with such choreographers as Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris, David Parsons, Ulysses Dove, Brian MacDonald, Ginette Laurin, Danny Ezralow and Margo Sappington. programs for home learners Arts Umbrella offers weekday arts education to Home Learner families in Metro Vancouver. Instructors of Home Learners classes work carefully with the Artistic Directors to further develop existing curricula to fit the needs of Home Learners families. Through hands-on arts classes, children ages 5–12 are immersed in creative discovery and fun learning. All Home Learners classes meet the requirements of the BC Ministry of Education.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR HOME LEARNERS

Intermediate (ages 9–12) Locations: GI Cameras, film and a fully-equipped dark room are included. This class helps you develop your technical skills with a manual 35mm camera. You learn about the history of photography and how pinhole cameras, photograms, cyanotypes and hand-colouring were part of the evolution of creating still images. Field trips on Granville Island provide ideas and inspiration from the natural and built environment.

VISUAL & THEATRE ARTS FOR HOME LEARNERS

Primary (ages 6–12) Locations: SS This year-long class is an integrated approach to the development of skills in both Theatre and Visual Arts. The program will investigate themes through both disciplines and will be tailored to suit the interest and skill level of the children enrolled. The theatre aspect will explore and experiment with creative expression of various emotions and reflect on this experience as a participant and observer. The visual arts piece is inspired by the work of prominent artists and encourages personal expression through the development of techniques in drawing, painting, printing and digital media. Topics and specific disciplines will change from session to session allowing students to register for a full year experience.

DRAW, PAINT AND MORE

Primary (ages 5–8) Discover artists from all over the world, and learn about colour mixing and patterning, brush strokes and blending. Develop your personal expression and explore drawing and painting with watercolours, inks, chalk and oil pastels, pencils, felts, pencil crayons and tempera paint. This class will explore two- and three-dimensional projects using tempera, watercolour, pastel, chalk, and a variety of found objects. Students will study pattern, texture, and colour as you learn to use clay, wood, fabric, paper, and other materials in unconventional ways.

CREATIVE DRAMA

Primary (ages 6–8) Discover your imagination, develop your creativity and build your self-confidence through exciting theatre games. In this class, you will develop your individual imaginative skills in this introduction to the world of theatre. You will learn to deliver lines with expression and character as you practice tempo, pace and timbre. By the end of the class, you will be able to repeat actions lines without prompts, and see how your character fits into the larger story.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Primary (ages 6–8) For those who love to sing, dance and act! Familiarize yourself with musical theatre repertoire through ensemble pieces, solos, vocal training, choreography and improvisation. Use techniques such as repetition, physical association, rhythm and patterns to memorize text and lyrics. You will learn how to recognize and repeat a rhythmical phrase, and understand the relationship between the physical body and music.

Intermediate (ages 9–12) For those who love to sing, dance and act! Gain a better understanding of chest and head voice, and singing in harmony. You will learn how facial expression and body posture can positively and negatively impact a performance. By the end of this class you will have a deeper understanding of how lyrics can be expressed both musically and dramatically.

DRESS-UP DRAMA

Early Learning (ages 3–5) The sharing of stories and myths from around the world sets the scene for the children's journeys through the landscape of imagination. Through inspirational theatre games, children use their imagination to propel a story of their creation, while developing listening skills, confidence and the ability to focus. Repetition, physical association, rhythm and patterns are used as methods of learning the basics of storytelling and pretending.

ACTING FOR THE CAMERA

Teen (ages 13–19) Explore on-camera acting and develop a deeper understanding of various on-camera techniques and screen directions through improvisation and scene studies. Build self-confidence and selfawareness through cold readings, audition skills and on-set simulations. By the end of the class, you will be able to apply specific strategies to your acting in order to increase emotional comfort and confidence in front of the camera.

CREATIVE DRAMA

Early Learning (ages 5–6) This class is packed with fun and exhilarating theatre games that encourage children to develop their imagination, creativity and self-confidence. They will learn the beginnings of improvisation, mime and movement through a process of interactive storytelling and an exploration of characterization. In order to ensure program quality and accessibility, classes are offered at four locations throughout Metro Vancouver. Please note that not all classes are offered at each location. Surrey Centre Park Place 102 – 13678 100 Avenue Opened in September 2012, Arts Umbrella’s newest facility is located in Park Place Towers at the King George Skytrain terminal. One studio space hosts many Outreach programs, as well as a select number of tuition-based, after school classes. See P39 for schedules and fees.

South Surrey Morgan Crossing 116 – 15850 26 Avenue Opened in January 2012, a three-studio facility in the Morgan Crossing area of South Surrey offers visual, media and performing arts classes Tuesday through Sunday, with many classes available on weekends. See P40 for schedules and fees.

Vancouver GRANVILLE ISLAND 1286 Cartwright Street Arts Umbrella’s core facility offers the most diverse selection of classes, and is home to the pre-professional theatre, dance and visual arts programs. Ten studios and classes 7 days a week means many options for arts learning, all year long. Q7 77 East 7 Avenue (at Quebec Street) Two performing arts studios are utilized mainly for pre-professional and professional dance classes. policies Instructors or program content may be changed at Arts Umbrella’s discretion, without notice. Information on the online registration system should be considered the most up-to-date. Some programs and classes may have specific requirements and policies. Please visit the website or contact Student Services for details. AGE Arts Umbrella reserves the right to withdraw students who have been registered into the incorrect age category. ATTENDANCE Every child who attends a class at Arts Umbrella must be registered through online registration or by Student Services. Instructors do not have the ability to register students. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class and unregistered students will be directed to Student Services. PARENT PICK-UP Arts Umbrella is not responsible for students before or after class time. If a parent/guardian is late picking up a child from class, a fee of $10 will be charged. Repeated lateness may lead to discharge from the class with no refund. FIELD TRIPS Instructors may lead supervised excursions during class time. Parental permission for these excursions is required at time of registration. Front Desk staff are informed as to location and times of all excursions by instructors before leaving the building. MEDICAL/LEARNING NEEDS Parents/guardians are required to inform Arts Umbrella at the time of registration of any allergies, or physical, emotional or learning needs their children may have.

LANGUAGE For safety reasons, all students must have a comprehensive understanding of English before attending classes. ADVERTISING AND PUBLICITY Arts Umbrella reserves the right to photograph and film students and their work for advertising and publicity purposes. Arts Umbrella reserves the right to use student artwork for exhibition at no charge. Parental permission is requested at time of registration. FEES Applicable program fees must be paid in full upon registration. A charge of $25 will apply to returned cheques. A $10 processing fee will be added to any registrations processed within 2 weeks of the Session start date. Payment can be made by cheque, cash, VISA, American Express or MasterCard. WITHDRAWALS, TRANSFERS AND REFUNDS All withdrawal and transfer requests must be received in writing. Non-attendance or non-payment of outstanding fees does not constitute a formal withdrawal. Fall, Winter, Spring Session • Withdrawals $50 • Transfers: $25 • Deadline: 48 hours after the 2nd class Year-Long Programs (Dance and Theatre) Withdrawals: • 2 weeks before start of program $100 • Before Sep. 30 - Arts Umbrella retains 30% • Before Dec. 1 - Arts Umbrella retains 50% • After Dec. 1 - Arts Umbrella retains 100%

WITHDRAWALS, TRANSFERS AND REFUNDS: CONTINUED Dance - Graduate Program An adminitrative fee of $100 will apply to withdrawals. Arts Umbrella will refund program fees to students who withdraw (voluntarily or involuntarily) within each term as follows: • Before the First Day of Term: 100% Refund (less adminitrative fee and deposit) • First, Second and Third Day of Term: 80% Refund (less administrative fee and non-refundable fees) • Fourth, Fifth Day of Term: 50% Refund (less administrative fee and non-refundable fees) • After Fifth Day of Term: No Refund Spring Break & Summer Programs • Withdrawals: 2 weeks before start of program $100; not accepted after the deadline. • Transfers: $50 Summer Dance Intensive • Withdrawals: 2 weeks before start of program $150; not accepted after the deadline. • Transfers: $50 ILLNESS OR INJURY A pro-rated refund may be issued outside of the above time guidelines if a written request is accompanied by a physician’s note. REMOVAL FOR CONDUCT Arts Umbrella reserves the right to remove any student who fails to comply with its rules and regulations or who engages in any activity deemed contrary to the fulfillment of Arts Umbrella’s objectives by the Director, Programming. In such an event, Arts Umbrella will be owed the fees for the complete session. Bursary recipients will be asked to reimburse the full value of any bursaries used toward their current registration.

In the event public schools are closed due to weather conditions, Arts Umbrella classes will also be cancelled. School closures are announced on local radio, television, and school board websites.
