ANNUAL REPORT
Career Development and Corporate Relations
Dean’s Message
As I have settled into my new role as dean of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the exceptional programs we offer our students. One crucial puzzle piece that makes our college the best student-centered engineering experience in America is the Office of Career Development and Corporate Relations (CDCR).
According to data collected through the Auburn University First Destination Survey, nearly 90% of Auburn Engineering students gained positive career outcomes within six months of graduation if they completed an internship or co-op. Through co-ops and internships, our students earn opportunities to apply their classroom learning in a tangible workplace setting, gaining real-world experience before they graduate. Through mock interviews, resume and cover letter assistance, our students learn how to best display their engineering expertise for future employers. Through our numerous career fairs, our students are exposed to recruiters from the top companies in the country without ever having to leave campus.
As a result, we are fortunate to have incredibly valuable corporate partners who believe in our vision. They hire and train our students to become some of the hardest working and most innovative engineers in the American workforce.
It is my hope that every student in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering has the opportunity to take part in a highimpact educational experience, including internships, co-ops, undergraduate research and even study abroad opportunities. There is no doubt each resource the CDCR office provides is opening more doors for students to not only secure a job, but to jump start their careers.
I hope you will enjoy learning more about what has been accomplished this year. And if you’re looking for a great new employee, hire an Auburn engineer! War Eagle!

“ CDCR has significantly shaped my career trajectory and enhanced my professional development skills. As a first-generation college student who had little idea of what direction I wanted to go, CDCR was beyond helpful every step of the way. From my initial internship search process, to resume and cover letter assistance, career fair preparation and networking advice, I felt well-equipped to put my best foot forward. I was also able to utilize the CDCR team’s expertise when it came to assessing my internship offers, making an ultimate decision and further down the line when navigating full-time offers. I am extremely grateful to CDCR and the highly dedicated career coaches for their constant support in helping me with every request, no matter how trivial it seemed.”
HIGH IMPACT EXPERIENCES & OUTCOMES
Based on Engineering Student Responses to the 2021-22 Auburn University Campus Engagement and Experience Survey and Auburn University First Destination Survey
The CEES asks students to share feedback on 5 high-impact learning experiences (internship, co-op, undergraduate research, study abroad, and meaningful writing experience) in which they may have participated during their undergraduate career at Auburn. The CEES also asks about students’ academic engagement within their academic college/degree program. The CEES is administered approximately four weeks before graduation each semester.
HIGH IMPACT PRACTICES
High impact practices (HIPs) are defined by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) as teaching and learning practices that offer evidence-based significant educational benefits for students who participate in them, including and especially those from demographic groups historically under-served by higher education. Research, internships, co-ops, and study abroad represent four of 11 HIPs identified by the AACU.

When students gain experience through internships, co-ops, research, and study abroad, it has a proven impact. Students with experience in these high-impact practices secure full-time jobs at a faster and higher-paying rate than students who do not.
STUDENT EXPERIENCE
“As a graduating senior, I secured a full-time job with ExxonMobil six months prior to graduation. I am confident the professional experience gained through internships was the catalyst for my success. I always knew when I started at Auburn University that I wanted to gain real-world experience that would help me understand what I can do in my future career. The Engineering Career Fair and Co-op and Internship Interview Day my sophomore year opened my eyes to the diverse opportunities I could find as a chemical engineer. I am proud to say I completed three internships during my time at Auburn. I highly recommend Auburn students seek out internship, co-op, and other types of experience to ensure job success at graduation.”

EMPLOYER EXPERIENCE
“My main goal was to help Auburn Engineering students understand what is needed for a career in the tech industry. As someone who has been living on the West Coast for almost 15 years now but also grew up in the Southeast, it can be difficult to make the transition especially in this current macro-climate. I have a unique perspective on how to accomplish it and would like to share my story, advice, and network with others. I don’t run into many Auburn alumni in professional settings who are also in the tech industry. I’d like to change that and help students be successful if they want to pursue the path.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience with the round-table. It was well organized in advance and had great attendance. Students had wonderful questions, and we went the entire time without pause. I had a few students reach out to me afterward, and I’ll continue to give them advice and help in any way I can. I would definitely do a similar event in the future if provided the opportunity.”

ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE
“When McLeod first started participating in the co-op program at Auburn, no one knew who we were. Participating in on-campus interviews gave us a way to connect with students and hire the best and brightest. Over time our co-op program has grown and become a lot more structured and way more successful. It has been a great program for McLeod and a great program for the students coming in. Our whole goal with the co-op program is to find another avenue for hiring potential full-time developers out of universities like Auburn. Interviewing on campus makes this process efficient and creates a different avenue where you would have someone who would graduate college and have nine months of McLeod experience and be ready to hit the ground running as a full-time software developer at McLeod.”

“Recognition of the hard work I put into my classes and co-op employment was a very rewarding feeling. However, what means the most is that Auburn’s co-op program seeks to make a difference in students’ lives. I was able to put the monetary award toward college education expenses, and I am thankful for that financial support. My co-op experience was everything I hoped it would be. It allowed me to participate in a wide range of work, providing hands-on experience and opportunities to apply what I learned in my classes. On the job, I learned skills and knowledge I brought back to college and applied in the classroom. Co-oping also provided me with valuable work experience, which was key to helping me secure a full-time job upon graduation.”

“The co-op and internship program plays a key role in day-to-day operations at International Paper. Interns and co-ops receive robust onboarding at each of our facilities to understand safety aspects, environmental impact, and operational tasks. They are given projects that are significant to the business, allowing them to develop and apply their skills as well as explore what an engineering career will be in the pulp and paper industry. IP views co-op and internship as a great way to attract talent into the organization early on and potentially convert co-ops and interns to full-time hires with a wealth of experience when starting as full-time engineers.”

INTERNSHIP REPORTING
CONFIRMED INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES
SELF-REPORTED INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES
CDCR asks students to complete an internship reporting form and register for the ENGR 3920 or 7920 course, for undergraduate and graduate students respectively. The courses offer an official way to document internship experience on the student transcript and result in a certificate for each internship experience completed. Through the reporting process and course enrollment, CDCR certifies each internship and provides tools to enhance the quality of both the student and employer experiences.
CDCR seeks to substantially increase the rate of student internship reporting. Report an internship at aub.ie/internship-reporting

“The CDCR team provided one-on-one advice on my resume, printed quality copies for me, and even gave me career fair advice such as what to wear and how to speak with potential future employers. Through the career fair, I connected and interviewed with employers, which led to meeting my current supervisor at International Paper.
During my internship experience, I worked hand-in-hand with engineers and contributed to the company daily all while learning information that will help me in future Auburn classes and in my future career. My most impactful experiences were seeing the hard work that goes into making products we use on a daily basis, as well as an annual outage where I performed lockouts and safety training. I learned to enter equipment and understand how it works from the inside while it was shut down.
I am forever grateful to the CDCR team and International Paper for helping me land this impactful opportunity. I highly recommend using the CDCR resources to guide you through this process!”
