A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR RON ANDERS
At the core of Auburn, you’ll find our vibrant, beautiful downtown where the lines between town and gown overlap. It’s where we celebrate our victories. It’s where all facets of our community come together for parades and block parties, and it’s where we meet friends and family to shop and dine. And we’re excited to make it even easier to visit downtown this year by adding 350 new public parking spaces in the Wright Street Parking Deck.

STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS With an emphasis on how Auburn can help improve the world around us, plans for research growth concentrate on commitments for change in four focus areas. To move Auburn forward in these key areas, strategic investments are being made to foster high-impact interdisciplinary teams whose work supports these core commitments. 1. IMPROVE HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE IN ALABAMA AND ACROSS THE NATION As Auburn University works to improve health and well-being in the state, region and nation, areas of focus include nextgeneration therapeutics, health disparities, precision medicine, chronic and infectious diseases and health care quality and cost.
AUBURN RESEARCH AUBURN.EDU/RESEARCH Auburn University has been recognized as a Carnegie R1 institution, placing it among the nation’s elite research universities. Auburn earned this distinction by reaffirming its commitment to bring practical solutions to our communities and world. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, Auburn researchers leverage discovery and innovation to solve real-world problems and bring cutting-edge technologies into the marketplace for the benefit of citizens in Alabama, the region and the nation.

Auburn’s Health Sciences Sector includes the Harrison School of Pharmacy’s Pharmaceutical Research Building and the School of Nursing building. Both facilities are located near the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), bolstering collaborations among VCOM medical students and Auburn nursing and pharmacy students. Auburn is also dedicated to fighting devastating diseases, including GM1 gangliosidosis, a fatal childhood disorder that progressively destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Auburn is proud to be part of the first clinical trial of a GM1 gene therapy treatment administered to a child at the National Institutes of Health. 2. CREATE INTELLIGENT SOLUTIONS With an ever-changing technological landscape, Auburn is committed to being on the cutting edge of research that moves the world forward in areas such as automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, next-generation manufacturing, quantum computing and data science. The National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME) was founded in 2017 through a collaboration between Auburn University (AU) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) leveraged by a signed
AU/NASA Space Act Agreement. The center is also part of a new Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence, a collaborative effort among AU/NASA, ASTM International and Edison Welding Institute. NCAME aims to lead and foster effective collaborations amongst industry, government, academia, non-profit organizations and ASTM committees for ensuring a coordinated, global effort toward rapidly closing standards and workforce development gaps in additive manufacturing. Established in 2021, the Auburn University Transportation Research Institute provides a unified presence and strategic direction for promoting the renowned transportationrelated research conducted within the academic departments and research centers in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. Thanks to the reputation of the units under the institute’s umbrella — the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) and its affiliated asphalt test track, the Highway Research Center (HRC), the Alabama Transportation Assistance Program (ATAP) and the GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Laboratory (GAVLAB) — extramural funding for transportation is greater than that of any other single topic within Auburn University’s research footprint. 3. CREATE A MORE SECURE WORLD Working to foresee and counter the latest cybersecurity and homeland security threats, Auburn’s McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security, along with the Center for Cyber and Homeland Security and Canine Performance Sciences serve as key partners in making our world a safer place through innovation and discovery. 4. BUILD RESILIENT SOCIETIES Auburn also remains committed to research that will advance society in areas such as energy independence and resilience, environmental sustainability, including coastal ocean science, and preserving a sustainable food water supply. The Auburn University Water Resources Center facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration among Auburn University
faculty and staff on water-related research, outreach and instruction; conducts innovative research to find practical solutions for current and future water issues and empowers private citizens to become active stewards of water resources. Since 2008, Auburn has been a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-designated Center of Excellence for Watershed Management, enhancing Auburn’s efforts to address water quality and availability issues in Alabama and the region.
INNOVATION Six Auburn professors have been named fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, and the university continues to commercialize its discoveries to benefit the public. In 2020, option and license revenue for Auburn inventions totaled over $4.6 million. Together, Auburn researchers drive discovery to the marketplace, collaborating with industry and government to create new economic development opportunities. With expertise aligned to meet societal needs, Auburn research continues to make an impact on our world, serving as a catalyst for growth and prosperity in Alabama and beyond.
AUBURN OUTREACH AUBURN.EDU/OUTREACH As a land-, sea- and space-grant institution, Auburn University has a special legacy in serving the community beyond campus through outreach. For more than a century, Auburn has been engaging with communities, businesses, schools and government to help people meet their educational goals and to improve quality of life across our state. The division of University Outreach offers more than 800 programs annually providing educational opportunities for all ages. TRADITIONS
TOOMER’S CORNER
WAR EAGLE War Eagle is both a salutation and a battle cry. It is not a mascot or nickname. “War Eagle” has become a way for the Auburn Family to greet and identify with each other all over the world. It can be heard before kickoff when Auburn fans join together for a loud “War Eagle!” as the eagle soars inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.
8 I W WW. AU B U R N C H AMBER.COM
Toomer’s Corner is where fans head to celebrate after a big Auburn athletics win. The rolling of Toomer’s Corner at Auburn was named as the nation’s “Best Sports Tradition” by the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest. The intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue is where Auburn’s campus and the city of Auburn meet. It’s also home to the famed Toomer’s Drugs, where the tradition of rolling the corner is said to have begun. The local drug store had the only telegraph in the city, so when employees received news of an Auburn victory at an away game, they would throw the ticker tape onto the powerlines of the intersection. The tradition then changed to throwing toilet paper into the trees.
Pep rallies hosted by the Student Government Association and the city of Auburn are held at Toomer’s Corner during football season. Thousands of students, faculty and fans fill the downtown streets to cheer the Auburn Tigers. Encouraging spirit within the Auburn community and campus, these pep rallies boost enthusiasm and stir Auburn pride in the heart of each member of the Auburn Family.
EAGLE FLIGHT The Eagle Flight is one of the most treasured gameday traditions in all of college football. Fifteen minutes before each home football game kickoff, the eagle takes flight inside the stadium for what ESPN has proclaimed the best pregame tradition in the SEC. Even visiting fans are captivated as the eagle soars around to the thundering “Waaarrrr Eagle!” of fans. The eagles promote wildlife conservation as a part of the education initiatives of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Southeastern Raptor Center. The USFWS permits the raptor center to house eagles and use them on hundreds of educational presentations each year, including Auburn’s home football games.
TIGER WALK Tiger Walk is a tradition that began in the early 1960s. Two hours before kickoff of every home football game, thousands of Auburn fans line Donahue Drive to cheer on the team as they walk to Jordan-Hare Stadium. Tiger Walk is such a major part of gameday activities that it’s listed on the players’ gameday itinerary. Fans often carry on the tradition at away games and bowl games.
TIGER TRAIL Tiger Trail is a series of plaques honoring Auburn’s greatest athletes, coaches and administrators, located on the sidewalks of downtown Auburn. A new class of honorees is inducted each year to this prestigious path, which includes more than 130 of Auburn’s athletic elite. An interactive map of the Tiger Trail can be found at webgis.auburnalabama.org/ TigerTrailViewer.
AUBIE Aubie is the mascot of the Auburn Tigers. He is a spirit leader and goodwill ambassador for the university. With 10 wins, he has won more UCA National Champion mascot titles than any other university mascot. Aubie was named the 2014 Capital One Mascot of the Year and was the first college mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006.

OUR HISTORY
Auburn was officially founded in the winter of 1836 when Judge John Harper set out with his family and other settlers to build a town intended to serve as the religious and educational center of the area. In 1839, the Alabama Legislature approved incorporating Auburn. After two years of growth and prosperity, Auburn began vying for a Methodist male college. On Feb. 1, 1856, the Legislature incorporated the East Alabama Male College. In 1859, the college opened its doors as a private liberal arts institution affiliated with the Methodist Church. The college was forced to close its doors in 1861 when most students joined the Confederate Army, but reopened Samford Hall as a hospital from 1864-1866. In 1866, East Alabama Male College opened once again, but struggled financially. In 1868, the Legislature decided to create a public land-grant college to offer specific training to help Alabama rebuild its war-torn state. Though the trustees would have preferred not to give up their college, the state had land-grant money and no campus and East Alabama Male College had a campus, but no money. On Feb. 26, 1872, Lee County Legislator Sheldon Toomer wrote the bill making Auburn the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Through the years, the institution has had four official names:
(1856-72) EAST ALABAMA MALE COLLEGE (1872-99) AGRICULTURAL AND MECHANICAL COLLEGE OF ALABAMA (1899-1960) ALABAMA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE (1960-PRESENT) AUBURN UNIVERSITY

EDUCATION
AUBURN CITY SCHOOLS AUBURNSCHOOLS.ORG
As classes resume for the 2021-2022 school year, enrollment in ACS, one of the fastest growing school districts in Alabama, will be approaching 9,000 students. To accommodate these students, there are 13 campuses that make up Auburn City Schools (nine elementary schools, two middle schools, one junior high and one high school).
includes the reconstruction and demolition of Cary Woods Elementary School and J.F. Drake Middle School, demolition and reconstruction of the gymnasium at East Samford School, and a 10th elementary school. The complete plan can be found on the school system’s website at www.auburnschools.org. Celebrating diversity, ACS boasts 23 different languages spoken in the homes of students from 48 different countries of origin.
As a result of growth, the Auburn City Council voted to commit the city’s 5 mill property tax fund to the school district for school construction, effective with the fiscal year 2016. Project payments from this fund must be voted on by the citizens of Auburn. Most recently, the Auburn citizens authorized payments for the construction of Auburn High School with a capacity for 2,200 students, which opened in the fall of 2017, and Creekside Elementary School with a capacity for 600 students, which opened in the fall of 2018.
ACS was the first SMART Showcase District in the U.S. with all classrooms having SMART Boards to enhance the learning experience for students and teachers alike.
In May 2018, the Auburn Board of Education approved ACS Facility Master Plan 2028, a 10-year plan addressing the demolition, reconstruction and renovation of buildings as well as the impact of student growth on the capacity of facilities. Phase 1 of this plan, which began in the fall of 2018,
Both Wrights Mill Road Elementary School and Auburn Early Education Center have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools, and Auburn Early Education Center has been named an Intel and Scholastic School of Distinction.
50 I WWW. AU B U R N C HAMBER.COM
ACS has been named the best educational value in the Southeast by The Wall Street Journal, ranked No. 6 on the list of best public school systems in Alabama by Niche.com (2021), and has landed on the list of “Top 100 School Systems in the U.S.” in Parenting magazine.
In the realm of technology, ACS is proud of the 1:1 initiative that began at Auburn Junior High School in 2006. Expanding the initiative in 2018, iPads were provided to each student in grades 8-12, and then all seventh grade students received devices in 2019. On the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT), Auburn High School students consistently score above the state and national averages and are regularly in the top five in the state in these scores. With a 96% graduation rate (2020), Auburn High School graduates have been awarded more than $177 million in scholarships since 2012 ($26 million+ for the class of 2021). For more information on ACS, visit www.auburnschools.org and follow all things related to the school system on Facebook (search Auburn City Schools), on Instagram (@AuburnCityEdu) and Twitter (@AuburnCityEdu).

UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS AUBURN.EDU/SCHOLARSHIP AUBURN.EDU/AUSOM
Finding and applying for scholarships can be hard work. With the Auburn University Scholarship Opportunity Manager (AUSOM), it is much easier. Students can search and apply for scholarships, accept available offers and more. To receive consideration for need-based scholarships each year, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA must be received by the financial aid priority deadline. Students can find AUSOM on My Finances within AU Access. Additional information about AUSOM, including application completion and submission information, may be found on the Office of University Scholarship’s website.
STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES AUBURN.EDU/FINAID
Student Financial Services is home to financial aid, cashiering, billing and account services. Students may view their financial aid requirements and awards on their My Finances page of AU Access. To provide parent access to a student’s financial matters, students must complete the financial release form on their My Finances page of AU Access. In addition to filling out the financial release form, students must make parents or family members an authorized user through eBill to give them access to their billing. It is important to have this conversation with your student prior to the first billing cycle, so you have a clear understanding of who will be making payments on the account. eBill is the hub to all student bills at Auburn. This includes tuition and mandatory fees, dining plans, residence halls, parking tickets and other miscellaneous charges.

HEALTH CARE
EAST ALABAMA MEDICAL CENTER 2000 PEPPERELL PARKWAY, OPELIKA (334) 749-3411 EAMC.ORG For 40 years, area residents have associated Lee County’s only hospital — as well as medical offices and other entities within the organization — as East Alabama Medical Center. And while the hospital at 2000 Pepperell Parkway in Opelika will still be known as East Alabama Medical Center, the organization began rebranding as East Alabama Health in the first quarter of 2021. The rebranding discussion began in the fall of 2019, but work on the plan was put on hold in March 2020 due to COVID-19. Officials explain that the rebrand reflects the full continuum of care that offered to people who are both healthy and sick or

injured, while preserving the legacy of our East Alabama identity. Under the leadership of President and CEO Laura Grill, East Alabama Health (EAH) is expanding and improving with each new year. Long considered one of the best places to work in the region, East Alabama Health employs around 3,500 people — second only to Auburn University in this area. East Alabama Health’s history dates back to February 16, 1952 when Lee County Hospital opened as an 81-bed facility that replaced a 20-bed hospital in Opelika. Following a number of expansions over the years, the hospital changed its name from Lee County Hospital to East Alabama Medical Center. East Alabama Medical Center is licensed for 340 beds (314 acute care beds and 26 skilled nursing beds). More than 150,000 people annually are cared for at East Alabama Medical Center.
The Emergency Department there cares for more than 50,000 patients annually, and over 2,000 babies are born each year in the hospital’s Women’s and Children’s Center. East Alabama Health’s newest addition is an 85,000 square foot facility in the Auburn Research Park that is called Auburn Medical Pavilion (AMP). Located near the intersection of Shug Jordan Parkway and South College Street, the AMP’s first floor will consists of the East Alabama Medical Center Freestanding Emergency Department. It will be open 24/7 and be supported by an outpatient imaging center, a laboratory and a satellite pharmacy called East Alabama Apothecary. The second floor will house the East Alabama Ambulatory Surgery Center, which is a joint venture between East Alabama Health and close to 20 area physicians. A breast health center will occupy a portion of the third floor, while the rest will be built out in the future.
Back at East Alabama Medical Center, the birth of another new service awaits in Fall 2021 when the hospital adds a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). East Alabama Health also includes EAMC-Lanier, a second hospital located in Valley. It has 98 acute care beds, a 17-bed acute rehab unit, and a 103-bed nursing home. Also, East Alabama Health operates the Auburn University Medical Clinic and a host of other entities (see eamc.org). More than 200 physicians are on the active medical staff for EAMC and EAMC-Lanier, practicing in 34 different specialties.

The facility includes laboratory, X-ray and pharmacy services. The clinical staff consists of fully licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, technicians and other support staff. SPENCER CANCER CENTER 2501 VILLAGE PROFESSIONAL DRIVE, OPELIKA (334) 528-1070 EAMC.ORG/FIND-A-SERVICE/ CANCER-CARE In the summer of 2019, EAMC proudly opened the E.L. Spencer, Jr. and Ruth Priester Spencer Cancer Center, located just northwest of EAMC on Village Professional Drive (pictured above). The Spencers donated $2.5 million to the funding of the cancer center construction. Mr. Spencer served on the EAMC Board of Directors from 1982–2008, including the last 18 years as board chairman. ECONOMY & EMPLOYMENT
AUBURN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
AUBURNALABAMA.ORG/ED While Auburn University anchors Auburn’s economy and provides stability, the Auburn Economic Development Department has worked tirelessly to ensure that Auburn continues to grow in all economic sectors.
INDUSTRIAL GROWTH Auburn’s industrial base is built around small- to mid-sized value-added technology-based manufacturing and research firms. Auburn has three technology parks and one industrial park where the main areas of focus include aviation components, engines, filtration parts, power transmission parts, medical plastics, plastics packaging, wireless technologies and the following automotive parts: axles,
66 I WWW. AU B U R N C HAMBER.COM
aluminum components, driveshafts, engine components, metals, plastics, solenoid valves, and textiles. The city continues to support industrial development by providing space to small business entrepreneurs at the Auburn Center for Developing Industries (ACDI). The facility was designed to give young, developing companies a startup environment during their early years or during a transition to the Auburn community. Also supporting the economy in Auburn and helping the city to prepare for the future is the Auburn Training Connection (ATC). The ATC, a joint partnership between the city of Auburn and community leaders from industry, education and government, complements the Auburn Economic Development Department and is dedicated to quality workforce development in our community. The ATC ensures that our growing industry
base is supplied with a skilled workforce by partnering with manufacturers to identify and meet workforce needs and assimilating Auburn High School students and citizens into high-tech manufacturing careers. As part of the city’s commitment to workforce development, the Industrial Development Board (IDB) of the city of Auburn and Auburn University are partnering to better equip workers with the skills needed to flourish in today’s manufacturing world. The result of this partnership is the Auburn Advanced Manufacturing Training Center (AMTC), which provides space for training and machine prototyping, setup and development.
COMMERCIAL GROWTH Driven by the continued population growth in East Alabama and rapidly expanding tourism and travel marketing, Auburn continues to experience steady commercial growth. The Commercial
Development Department promotes and facilitates continued quality commercial growth and serves as a partner for providing tools and resources to establish businesses in Auburn and navigate the development process.
ENTREPRENEURIAL GROWTH The creation of technology-based startups is an important pillar of the city of Auburn’s economic development strategy and an initiative has been established to focus on entrepreneurship and technology. By providing resources and programming for entrepreneurs and aspiring tech startups, the city strives to improve the health of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, as well as further the growth and development of technology-based companies in Auburn. The Additive Manufacturing Accelerator in Auburn is a new resource for Alabama manufacturers and entrepreneurs. The accelerator was established to aid industries and startups as they create and develop new products using advanced additive methods, or 3D printing, in metals and polymers.

AUBURN RESEARCH PARK AUBURNRTF.ORG
Auburn Research Park is a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem and researchbased discovery space currently undergoing exciting transformation. For more than a decade, Auburn Research Park has been driving innovation –– from launching start-ups to supporting mature, knowledge and tech-based companies. As the southern gateway to the Auburn University campus, the park’s research and entrepreneurial environment serves to connect business with award-winning faculty expertise and talented students eager to gain real-world experience.
68 I WWW. AU B U R N C HAMBER.COM
Big Blue Marble Academy joined the park ecosystem in early 2019, providing much-needed early child education and daycare services not just to campus, but to the community as well. Big Blue Marble is a globally themed child care facility with year-round care for children ages infant to preschool, as well as after school care. Offering a rich variety of learning experiences, Big Blue Marble’s curriculum focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as immersive language programs in Spanish, French and Mandarin for all children. The Auburn Research and Innovation Center opened in September 2020, and is a 100,000-square-foot, $40 million investment in the park. This five story, mixed-use facility will be home to Auburn University’s vice president for research and economic development, a student accelerator, a business incubator, public meeting space, a café and a range of commercial clients. This facility has been designed to foster creative collisions between and among the many gifted minds and thought-leaders
who inhabit Auburn Research Park and the surrounding community. East Alabama Health, formerly East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC), joined Auburn Research Park in 2021 with the Auburn Medical Pavilion, an 88,000-square-foot, $35 million health sciences center that houses a freestanding emergency department, an ambulatory surgery center, as well as health science and medical research units. East Alabama Health’s presence in the park creates opportunities for internships and clinical research, and helps serve the medical needs of Auburn’s growing population. The Auburn metropolitan area, which includes Lee County and Opelika, is the fastest-growing region in Alabama outside of Huntsville. It is growing four times faster than any other area in the state with a predicted population of 180,000 by the year 2025. Corresponding growth in Auburn Research Park today is part of a larger strategy to meet needs and contribute to the economy of our energetic and ever-expanding community.

FIGHT ON YOU ORANGE AND BLUE. Over this past year, the Auburn Family was tested in ways we never anticipated. But thanks to the dedication of our faculty and students who adjusted quickly to new ways of learning, fearless alumni fighting on the front lines and the resilience of the Auburn community, we not only persevered — we grew stronger. That’s the spirit, Auburn.
