Our on-site workshop can bring your jewelry dreams to life

At Aucoin Hart Jewelers, we recognize the emotional significance of something made “just for you,” and that is why we have a state-of-the-art jewelry workshop on site. If you can dream it, we can design it and create it. Sometimes we work from a brand new idea, other times we are asked to redesign a piece of jewelry that has been in someone’s jewelry box for awhile and needs a fresh look. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of upgrading the diamond or enhancing the setting style. At Aucoin Hart, we have proudly preserved the old-world tradition of custom designed jewelry, combining the traditions of hand crafting with the latest in technology. We use the world’s finest CAD/CAM technology, casting and milling machines and 3-D printers that produce the highest quality resin models. The process starts with a consultation and usually a sketch, followed by a 3-D rendering using CAD technology. This is followed by the creation of a wax mold, which is used to cast the jewelry into precious metal. Producing it automatically with

our casting and milling machines results in a high degree of precision. The piece is then finished and polished to perfection by our master jewelers, and our gemsetters secure the diamonds and gemstones with an expert, highly-trained hand. Through each step, you are invited to follow the creation of your piece of Aucoin Hart jewelry and witness your dream jewelry come to life. From start to finish, each piece of jewelry made in our workshop is designed and created using the finest materials and gemstones available, and everything is finished according to the principles of fine jewelry craftsmanship. This same level of expertise and attention to detail is applied to the jewelry that you bring to us for restoration, repair, redesign or even just cleaning. The Aucoin Hart workshop is always humming with activity, as our artisans design and create custom jewelry made to order or simply to fill the showcases in the store with beautiful, unique pieces. There is a great work of art in every box from Aucoin Hart, just waiting to be discovered.

8mm Akoya cultured pearl pendant with 0.27ct white diamonds, set in 18K white gold. $3,300

The Miracle of Pearls “My dream is to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls.” KOKICHI MIKIMOTO, FOUNDER

Kokichi Mikimoto made his dream of adorning women with pearls come true in 1893. After years of hard work and experimentation, he cultured the world’s first semi-spherical cultured pearl, the first pearl ever grown by man, cultivated by harnessing the natural processes of nature. Kokichi followed up in 1905 with another major achievement, cultivating the world’s first perfectly spherical cultured pearl, and would later also perfect the culturing of black South Sea pearls. Mikimoto’s groundbreaking technique made this coveted gem accessible to women everywhere, carving an everlasting niche in the world of jewelry.

In 1899, the first Mikimoto pearl store was opened in Tokyo’s

chic Ginza shopping district, followed soon after by store openings in London, New York, Paris, and Beverly Hills. By 1907, the company was also making jewelry in its own workshops, using the techniques of European goldsmiths. Today, Mikimoto is not only the world’s foremost producer of cultured pearls, but also a world leader in the design of exceptional jewelry. Mikimoto creations range from traditional fine pearl strands to innovative jewelry that combines pearls with other gemstones in modern designs. Whether it’s the timeless elegance of exceptional pearl strands or designs that represent upto-the-minute contemporary styles, the quality of the

workmanship in Mikimoto jewelry is second to none. Each beautiful piece reflects supreme dedication, passion and care. Amazingly, only the top 5% of all the cultured pearls in the world meet the Mikimoto standards of quality. As Mikimoto says: “To wear Mikimoto is to reflect the purity of the ocean… the mystery of creation… and to know you are adorned with the finest cultured pearls in the world.”

Aucoin Hart Jewelers is proud to carry an extensive

selection of Mikimoto jewelry. Our boutique incorporates a special space of honor for the display of Mikimoto’s earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces incorporating Akoya, as well as natural black, white, golden, multi-color or baroque South Sea cultured pearls.

Designer Profile:

Marco Bicego of Marco Bicego Jewelry

“I first get the idea for a piece from my travels — I’m incredibly influenced by the destinations I visit and the nature and architecture I see. Then, once the design is finalized, our craftsmen use a bulino tool to engrave hundreds of tiny lines on the gold surface, creating a tactile finish that remains practically unalterable through time. Should the piece include a colored stone or diamond, they are all hand-set. I am also inspired by the women who wear Marco Bicego. When creating my collections, I always keep the Marco Bicego woman in mind, especially her style and how she isn’t afraid to experiment with jewelry in unconventional ways. Many, if not all, of our collections can be worn together; I design with the mentality that pieces are meant to be artfully layered.”

Soft and feminine

Marco Bicego’s yellow gold jewelry is natural, understated and seductive

There is nothing like the softness of yellow gold. It is the ultimate feminine jewelry statement, classic and timeless. It works with vintage styles, and vintage dresses, which is important today, as vintage-themed weddings are very much in style right now. Yellow gold is more subtle than other gold colors, and it is also more natural. There is no such thing as naturally occurring rose, white, or green gold. Gold itself is only one color: yellow. Any other color is produced by mixing pure 24k yellow gold with other metals, creating alloys, or mixes of metals. Adding copper, for example, produces rose gold. Adding nickel or palladium creates white gold. Yellow gold is mixed with traces of nickel, copper, and zinc, which make it stronger and slightly lighter in color than pure gold. It is ideal for jewelry.

Marco Bicego’s new Lunaria collection epitomizes the

femininity of soft yellow gold. The collection is inspired by the translucent, disc-shaped seed pods of the Lunaria flower. This unique, organic shape is beautifully interpreted by Bicego with petal-like disks of gold linked by chains. The surfaces of the pods are engraved using the brand’s signature Bulino technique, a satin finish that lends itself particularly well to the motif because it creates an organic look, an essential expression of the Marco Bicego style. Each delicate, 18k gold petal-like element is surrounded by a carefully forged frame that is given a contrasting high polish for an even closer resemblance to the Lunaria pod of nature. The collection includes necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings, some of which incorporate precious gemstones cut in slices to repeat the shape of the flat, petal-like gold elements.

Signature Scintillation David Yurman’s Albion collection brings out the beauty of unique gemstones

The Albion, first introduced in 1994, is one of David Yurman’s most recognizable designs. Albion is a celebration of the beauty of cushion-shaped gemstones with the signature checkerboard faceting that creates a greater play of color and light. Now, David Yurman unveils a refined new iteration of the Albion, with softer, more sensual edges and a setting that holds the stone closer to the skin. The colored gemstones are backed with sterling silver for enhanced brilliance, and diamonds are set in a mosaic pattern, creating a scintillating sparkle. David Yurman’s wife, Sybil, once told him she wanted a bracelet that told time. This was the starting point for a timepiece collection that combines signature David Yurman design elements with exceptional technology and craftsmanship. Now, playing on the new look of the Albion Collection, David Yurman is introducing a watch that truly combines timekeeping with jewelry. The watch dial is square with rounded corners, taking its inspiration from the collection’s recognizable cushion-shaped gemstones. The linked bracelet makes the design perfect for pairing with a stack of David Yurman bracelets. David Yurman, one of America’s leading jewelry designers, has become an icon of American style. A former sculptor, David began to design jewelry more than 30 years ago, developing his passion into a global business. His signature pieces have become legends in jewelry design.

How to buy a colored diamond Three of the most important factors impacting the price of a natural color diamond are strength of color, rarity of color, and size. Strength of color: The color intensity of a natural colored diamond can be graded as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, or Fancy Vivid — with Fancy Vivid constituting the highest grade. The stronger the intensity of a colored diamond, the higher the value will be.

Natural fancy yellow and white diamond pendant set in 18k gold by Gregg Ruth. $6,500

Rarity of color: The rarity of a colored diamond will affect its price. The more common colors, such as gray, brown, and yellow, will generally have a lower cost than rarer colors, such as pink, blue, green, purple, and orange, which occur less frequently in nature. The rarest known and most expensive color of all is red. Size: Large colored diamonds are extremely rare. This makes them exponentially more expensive.

REFRESH, RESTYLE, REDESIGN For some couples, the best option is to upgrade to a new engagement ring due to a change in style preference or damage to the original ring. Consider enhancing the design with layers of meaning by adding children’s birthstones, specialized filigree metalwork, inscriptions to the band or three-stone “past, present, and future” symbolism. The trend for stackable bands is a wonderful way to upgrade existing jewelry and at the same time, to build on the story of you and your partner’s lives together. Adding bands for special anniversaries and life events creates new wedding ring ensembles. Many women also upgrade by adding color to their rings, with fancy color diamonds a favorite choice, as well as color in metals like rose or yellow gold. Just as when you picked out your original wedding rings together, it might be fun to make the choice to upgrade together — including a new ring for the groom — reliving the original moment of commitment. If you do choose to buy a new ring, take care to preserve the original, either for yourself or future generations. It is always possible to renovate fine jewelry in the future!

Cellini Dual Time models feature dual time zones and a day/night indicator. All contain high-precision automatic movements manufactured by Rolex, and all are chronometer rated, which means they have passed a series of tests that guarantee the ultimate accuracy and reliability. Nothing about the Cellini line is over-embellished or over-sized. They are available only on alligator leather straps in either black or brown. The dial is restricted to the timeless codes of fine watchmaking, including elongated Roman numerals, stretched applied hour markers, and two-edged, sword-style hands. The minute track has been moved closer to the inside of the dial, intersecting the numerals at the halfway point, to make the time easy to read. All of these elements combine to make the Rolex Cellini the ultimate watch for daily wear.

Daring Diver’s Watches A great dive watch not only serves a style function — as a sporty accessory — it is essential equipment for divers who want to survive their plunges into the ocean depths. A good diver’s watch should be water resistant to at least 100 meters. It should have a unidirectional rotating bezel so you can time your dive without the possibility of malfunction. It should have a screwdown crown and caseback, heavily luminated hands and markers, and a helium valve for decompression during deep dives. Here are some top choices for dive watches.

tudor The TUDOR Pelagos is the quintessential diver’s watch, used by underwater professionals. It has been designed for optimum readability, with large, luminated hour markers, hands and bezel. The luminescence is blue, the last color on the spectrum to be discernible at great depths. The case is titanium and steel, with a helium escape valve at 9 o’clock. There is a patented automatic adjusting clasp on its titanium bracelet. It is waterproof to a remarkable 500 meters. The TUDOR Pelagos now features a COSC-certified manufacture movement, the Caliber MT5612, which features an anti-magnetic silicone hairspring and an approximate 70-hour power reserve.

rolex Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller 4000 is an updated version of a model that was first launched in 1967 as the Sea-Dweller 2000 (water resistant to 2,000 feet). The new Sea-Dweller 4000 is water resistant to 4,000 feet. The only other revision of this iconic model was in 1978, also rated to 4,000 feet. New is the black Cerachrom bezel with PVD platinum markers, gold Chromalight hands and markers, blue Parachrom hairspring (in Caliber 3135), and a bracelet with Glidelock extension system and Oysterlock safety clasp. The case is stainless steel and retains the look of the ’70s version, including the famous helium escape valve.

luminox The Luminox ANU Chronograph No. 4241, with a 45mm, black PVD plated stainless steel case,a screw down crown and caseback, unidirectional ratcheting bezel, antireflective sapphire crystal, 200meter water resistance, signature PU strap and Luminox self-powered illumination. It is Swiss made and is authorized for Navy Use (ANU). It is the preferred timepiece of Maritime Commandos.

Designer Profile:

Penny Preville of Penny Preville Fine Jewelry

“My

original inspirations were my mother and grandmother. My

mother was an artist, an interior designer, and an antique dealer. My grandmother painted Art Nouveau motifs on Limoges Porcelain. Art and creativity surrounded me as a child. I used to visit my grandmother every Sunday. I would sneak into her room, where she kept a beautiful jewelry box that looked like a bejeweled treasure chest. Inside, I found gemstones, jewelry creations from Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef, and others. Each piece represented a story from my grandmother’s life. That was the beginning of my love affair with jewelry. Today, I’m inspired by the world around me. I study past and present cultures and ancient civilizations, along with nature, the arts, and fashion. I romance these elements, making them feel fresh for a conDiamond ring set in 18k white gold. $2,990

Bold gold jewelry is making a glittering comeback, with modern designs and an anything-goes attitude

is trending

Gold is back! The preferred metal of the disco era in all its glittering glory is back in style, particularly in shades of yellow. Designs are more modern, and in some cases more subdued, than they were in the 1980s, of course, with fewer high-polished surfaces and a greater concentration on hand-finishing. The newest way to wear gold is to don multiple pieces at once, mixing sizes, styles, colors, and textures for a look that is as individual as you are. It’s all about mixing, matching, and layering. From several dainty chains to one bold piece of yellow gold jewelry, anything goes. Here are five looks in gold jewelry that are trending right now.

David Yurman Belmont Necklace with white diamonds in 18k yellow gold. $3,600

1

Yellow gold Soft yellow gold is the ultimate feminine jewelry statement, classic and timeless. It works with vintage styles and dresses, which is important for bridal wear, because vintage-themed weddings are in style right now. Yellow gold can be more subtle than other gold colors, and it is also more natural — gold comes out of the ground in a yellow color. Given a high polish, it is at its most glittering. Gold is set to dominate the red carpet this fall.

Sapphire and diamond stack rings in 18k gold by Lauren K. $2,250 each

Stacks and layers

The hottest look in jewelry right now is to stack multiple rings or bangles or layers of necklaces. Layering gold pieces in a variety of textures, finishes, colors, sizes, and gemstone accents is a great way to create a look that is a true expression of individual style. The same pieces can be used to change your look on a daily basis, depending on what you’re wearing. This is your chance to be creative and go from bling to delicate or anywhere in between.

3 Links

Sapphire and diamond stack bracelets in 18k gold by Lauren K. From $1,375

Large-linked gold bracelets and necklaces are part of the comeback to big looks in gold. Links are one of the most versatile elements in jewelry, because they can be made in so many different sizes, shapes, and finishes. There is a trend toward square, rectangular, and irregular-shaped links. Hand finishing is important because links are larger, and a bit of texture offers an alternative to a high polish, which is very bold. Fortunately, the bigger sized links also leave lots of room for setting diamond accents.

Gold and Diamonds

After years of sheer gold surface, the unmistakable sparkle of multiple diamonds is making a return to jewelry design, with breathtaking results. This represents partly a return to tradition – gold and diamonds are the backbone of fine jewelry – but with a twist. New designs combine innovative diamond settings and sprays of smaller diamonds, rather than one center stone, in contemporary, innovative gold pieces. One new trend is open-worked styles, with diamond-set gold designed around negative space or gold that has been woven or scultped to include gaps. The result is a piece that is lightweight and highly wearable, but with plenty of sparkle.

Mixed colors

The three most common colors of gold — white, rose, and yellow — are all equally popular right now. You probably already have jewelry and watches in your wardrobe in all three colors, and now it’s acceptable to wear them together. This year, designers are including all three colors in the same pieces or in one collection, with designs that are meant to be mixed together in stacks or layers.

PEARLS

While a strand of pearls might seem mundane when it comes to haute couture fashion, fall’s runway shows in Milan made it clear the new trend is a classy option. We give a nod to the past while embracing the future. Designers including Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Thom Browne demonstrated pearls don’t always have to mean precious. Stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Sarah Jessica Parker prove how the jewelry stalwart can look fresh, sophisticated, and modern. Pearls have been translated into double rings, double-sided earrings, and the funky yet chic choker necklaces using double stranded pearls. Layer them as you see fit!

Watchmaking Wonders

Top Trends

Today’s luxury timepieces are designed to stand the test of time, with increasingly maintenance-free mechanical movements and cases made of precious metals and space-age materials. Because it is made to last, there is always a classic, timeless element to the design of a luxury timepiece. However, several trends and style developments are revealed each year at the two main watch fairs in Switzerland, Baselworld and the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. Some of these trends are nuanced variations on previous designs, and others represent innovations that push the boundaries of craftsmanship and technology. Here are seven trends that are currently shaping the modern mechanical watch industry.

1

1. Mixed Materials Watches are no longer made of just one material. Historically, luxury watches were made of gold, and then stainless steel began to dominate the industry in the late 1980s. Today, timepieces are just as likely to be made of titanium, ceramic, carbon, or a combination of these materials, mixed with stainless steel or gold.

2. Rose Gold Rose gold continues to be a strong color in watches, especially mixed with other warm colors, such as brown straps or dials. Rose gold was traditionally used for the cases of special watches — high complications and limited editions — to set them apart as exceptional and exclusive. Rose gold has since become the case color of choice, for its soft hue and understated elegance. It is made by alloying the gold with copper. Some alloys contain a touch of platinum for extra strength.

3. Jewelry Watches Today’s jewelry watches range from the high jewelry category, fully set with diamonds, to timepieces that are uniquely designed using diamonds in innovative applications — to form a motif on the dial or case, or to add sparkle in a freeform pattern to an everyday watch. Diamonds are no longer just for special occasions, but some occasions in particular call for diamonds. In some cases, like the Rolex, sizes have been reduced to make these watches even more wearable for every day.

4

4. Decorative Dials Today, it takes more than a super-complication or a mechanical movement to constitute excellence in watchmaking. The decoration and finish of a luxury timepiece has become as important as the mechanics on the inside. Master craftsmen spend hundreds of hours executing the finish on a watch, using the so-called metiers d’art: enameling, gemsetting, marquetry, and engraving.

>

5. Classic Timepieces and traditional

movements are making a comeback, after several years of oversized watches with multiple complications. Characteristics of the classic dress watch include

clean, minimalist dials with Roman numerals or sleek

markers and rarely more that one complication, aside from minutes, hours, and seconds.

It is water resistant to 200 meters, and features Luminox self-powered illumination. It is Swiss Made, and is the preferred timepiece of SXC astronauts and test pilots.

>

6

6. Blue Dials The hottest trend in watch dials is blue, in every shade and hue. The color is at its best next to white or silver (the same reason that, in jewelry, blue sapphire is always set into white gold, platinum, or silver). Blue dials usually go hand in hand with steel, platinum, or white gold cases, which makes the blue dials pop.

<

Rolex Submariner in 18k yellow gold and stainless steel, with a 40mm wide case that is water resistance to 300 meters. The unidirectional bezel features an insert made of scratch-resistant cerachrom, Rolex’s proprietary ceramic alloy, with numerals and graduations coated in gold. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal features the signature cyclops lens over the date.

7

7. Ceramic Bezels

Ceramic was introduced to the watch industry in the late 1990s and has since become one of watchmaking’s most important materials, taking its place next to gold and stainless steel. Ceramic’s magic lies in its properties of indestructability. It is temperatureresistant, hypo-allergenic, and will never rust, rot, or scratch. It is also bullet-proof — ceramic is used to make vests that can stop bullets from high caliber rifles. Ceramic can be infused with any color and is blessed with a silky texture that takes a high polish. All of this makes it particularly useful for bezels, the outer ring that joins dial and case and is the most susceptible to knocks and scratches.

FOREVERMARK DIAMONDS REPRESENT THE PROMISE OF PURITY, QUALITY, AND RESPONSIBLE SOURCING

Forevermark diamond engagement ring set in platinum and created by Aucoin Hart’s master craftsman.

A Diamond This year, Forevermark Diamonds has resurrected De Beers’ iconic “A Diamond Is Forever” slogan. “Forevermark has unveiled a powerful new marketing campaign that aims to highlight the brand’s driving belief in the power of a promise and why a Forevermark diamond can truly convey consumers’ most important promises in life,” says Stephen Lussier, CEO of Forevermark, the diamond brand from the De Beers Group of Companies.

In 1947, Frances Gerety, a young copywriter at the N.W. Ayer advertising agency in Philadelphia, penned what would become the most famous advertising slogan of all time: “A Diamond Is Forever.” And so De Beers — the name of an otherwise obscure South African mining company — was burned into the American consumer consciousness as the world’s source for diamonds. From this was born the Forevermark diamond brand. Diamond mining companies from Australia, Russia, and Canada now share De Beers’ formerly exclusive space in the diamond market, but De Beers alone is responsible for making the promise already established in consumers’ minds: that a diamond means love, forever. Now, Forevermark carries the promise of forever to a new generation. Only certain carefully selected diamonds are eligible to carry the Forevermark brand inscription, only certain designers and manufacturers may set them into jewelry, and only certain retailers may sell them. The Forevermark diamond journey begins at the mine, where rough diamonds are extracted from deep within the earth. Each mine produces a wide range of rough diamonds, but only the highest quality rough material will be cut into a Forevermark diamond.

Is Forever

Once cut and polished, experts at the Forevermark Diamond Institute in Antwerp, Belgium, carefully inspect each stone again to determine its fit for the brand. Between 5% and 10% are still rejected for not meeting quality standards.

It is also possible to choose from several diamond shape options. Baguettes are popular right now. This classic stone shape can be used to flank the center diamond in an engagement ring or in several new ways to create distinctive expressions. The baguette is fresh again and can easily give your ring some pizazz. The east-west stone setting, or setting a stone horizontally, creates an unusual and attention-grabbing look. A bonus of this setting is that it makes your stone appear larger. It works best with cushion, oval, marquise, and emerald shaped stones. Adding a halo to an engagement ring came into vogue briefly in the 1920s and has recently become very popular again. It creates the illusion of a larger center stone, adding

up to a big look without spending beyond your means. In 2015, halos are featuring different shapes than the stones they surround. Double (and triple) halos are getting more popular, allowing for unusual touches, such as using a row of yellow or pink diamonds or even blue sapphires. While there are a lot of exciting trends to consider and lots of stunning looks to make your engagement ring stand out, here’s one trend that won’t change — the perfect ring for you is the one that best symbolizes the personal journey you and your groom are about to undertake.

How to pick the wedding ring that’s right for you

When it comes to wedding rings, men now have an array of choices and styles that rival the options that women enjoy for engagement rings. This can make choosing the band more complicated.

From our collection of alternative metal wedding rings: Tungsten carbide. $260 Black cobalt. $290 Tungsten carbide with black sapphires. $520

Do you go with a traditional gold band? Do you want a more masculine style? Is platinum the “in” metal? Will a titanium band give you the sportier look you want? Should your ring have a bit of sparkle in it? What will a ring with combined metals look like? Never fear. We will arm you with the information you need and guide you in the process of selecting a ring that you can cherish for a lifetime. Start by choosing a metal. Gold is the traditional material for wedding bands. This symbolic metal is available primarily in yellow, white, and rose, although other colors such as blackened and brown gold can be

found. Gold can be finished in a variety of ways — from polished to matte. Since it is a softer metal, it can be scratched or dented, but it can easily be re-polished to its original shimmering glory. Platinum has also become a popular choice for wedding bands. It is one of the most durable and expensive of the precious metals, with a beautiful grayish-white luster. Platinum is heavier and stronger than gold, due to the density of the metal. It is also hypoallergenic — some people develop allergies from the alloys used in other metal bands. Palladium, part of the platinum group of metals, shares many of platinum’s attributes, such as its white color, strength, and durability. Since it is not quite as rare as platinum, and also not as dense, this metal is lighter and more affordable, and therefore a great choice for a wedding band. Like platinum, palladium is hypoallergenic. Titanium is extremely lightweight and very strong — three times stronger than steel — so it will last a lifetime. Titanium bands are highly resistant to bending and denting, but because titanium rings are so strong, resizing or changing them can be difficult. Titanium is hypoallergenic, very affordable, and comes in a variety of colors, including white, gray, black, purple, blue, and more. Tungsten Carbide wedding bands are usually dark slate gray or black in color. This metal is quite dense, which makes the rings feel similar in weight to other traditional metals. It is affordable, durable, and extremely scratch resistant, but it can crack or shatter if dropped or hit against a very hard surface, so it may not be the right choice for someone who works with his hands. Also important to consider, tungsten carbide rings cannot be resized. After deciding on the metal, you’ll need to think about a style. Classic weddings bands have made a comeback. According to Amanda Gizzi, of the Jewelry Information Center, the classic vintage style has regained popularity because this generation of grooms and brides has a strong connection to their grandparents. Traditional, understated rings

There is also a growing trend toward adding bling to the men’s wedding band. This look once appealed to a small group of men, but now, with the many available options, more men are considering adding gemstones. Ring stones include white, black, gray, or cognac diamonds, and even sapphires. They are usually flush-set on the band so they don’t get in the way. Designs span a range, from a single stone setting to a subtle row of diamonds on the edge of the ring, or having the entire band encrusted with stones. If you want some sparkle on your ring this might be the look for you.

After deciding on the metal, you’ll need to think about style.

are usually classic yellow gold or platinum, and have clean, smooth lines, that can be flat or rounded. Additional designs on the band may include a small bit of milgrain work. Another development in men’s wedding band styles is getting two bands. Women traditionally have two rings — their engagement ring and their wedding band — and now men can too. Men appreciate versatility with their rings, just as much as they do in their watches. Gentlemen have a long tradition of owning a classic dress watch, as well as their sports watch, and with two wedding bands, they have the same option to match their jewelry with their activity. Yet another trend is the masculine look of blackened or mixed metals in bands that are heavier and wider in size and feature textures and scrollwork. Many of these dark bands are made with titanium or tungsten, although blackened gold is also used. These darker bands feel

sophisticated and sleek and give the groom a distinctive look. Regardless of the ring you ultimately select, you should think about ways to make your ring even more special and unique. Traditionally, the inside of your band is personalized with your initials or the date of your nuptials. Fingerprints of your other half can be etched on the inside, as could an engraving of your love’s heart beat, a phrase, a lyric, or a location, such as the coordinates of where you first met. The inside of the band could even be set with hidden diamonds or other meaningful gems. Be creative — these are the special things that made you fall in love. Your wedding ring is a reminder of your special day, as well as a symbol of your unending commitment to your partner. You will wear it for the rest of your life, so make sure you choose wisely. Picking the right ring will take some time and consideration on your part, but in the end, it will be well worth the effort.

CRAFTING AN HEIRLOOM The art of decorative knives A William Henry pocketknife is as much intuitive as it is utilitarian, as much a piece of art as it is an award-winning accessory. Crafted from metals, wood, stone, exotic fossil materials, and more, each knife is the result of a succession of discreet steps that culminate in a small masterpiece. Matt Conable, president and creative architect of the company, is intrigued by the sensuous intersection of form and function, warmth and cold, hard and soft, and in his role as designer, this perspective is evident in the juxtaposition of patterns and materials. The earthy warmth of desert ironwood, for example, is the perfect counterpoint to cool Damascus steel, and the totemic DNA of fossil ivory effectively contrasts with the swirl of mokume gane. Founded in 1997, William Henry occupies a 6,400-square-foot manufactory in McMinnville, Oregon, that feels more like an artisan’s workshop

than a state-of-the art facility. Conable modeled the space after a custom knife shop, which is where he first honed his craft as a teen. With natural shell hailing from Australia, wood from such reaches as Morocco and Mexico, and fossil mammoth bone from Russia or Alaska, as well as metalworkers, fine engravers, and stone experts stationed all over the globe, each knife is a remarkable international affair. The components are precision machined to tolerances reserved for aerospace level work – often measured at 0.0005-inch, or one-twelfth the size of a human hair. But the final fit, finish, action, and sharpness are achieved by hand, employing the timehonored craftsmanship developed by generations of master cutlers. There are 22 craftspeople at the Oregon studio, collectively realizing the company’s motto: “Superlative function deserves to be elevated to superlative art.”

In recent years, Conable expanded the definition of William Henry to include a wider array of luxury accessories for men, including money clips, cuff links, key chains, and writing instruments. In 2014, the brand launched its first collection of men’s jewelry, which was received enthusiastically. William Henry’s collection of pens has already won prestigious awards and gained a new legion of devotees for their beauty, design, and original materials. The pen shop, adjacent to the knife-making area, has a buzz all its own. There, each pen is turned, assembled, and polished as a whole to a glass-like finish, rendering every piece unique. And here, too, it seems that human touch accounts for more than the most technologically advanced machinery: after multiple polishings, each of the rollerball and limited-edition fountain pens is carefully examined by hand for any imperfections. The names of the pen collections are an homage to the Willamette Valley wine country where William Henry is located: Cabernet, Chablit. The fountain pens feature 18k gold German-made nibs. A William Henry pocketknife takes more than 12 months to produce, the work of more than 30 artisans and 800 individual operations. There are currently about 10 distinctive knife collections available, each with a personality all its own. In addition, the company produces exclusive editions as well as one-of-a-kind pieces. “Heirloom quality,” a tenet on which the company was founded, doesn’t come easily.
