LYLE XOX

Lyle XOX’s arresting photographs span a broad range of salient subject matter, from the serious to the satisfyingly frivolous, with several stops along the way. Given the prevalence of the “mask” in his photographs, the existential inquiry into the nature of the self is a strong undercurrent throughout Lyle’s practice.

Working with the fact that guise is a given in this image-saturated age in which we are all curating our own identity, Lyle embraces representations of the self through storytelling. His characters, all of whom are self-portraits, form a troupe of players that are icons and iconoclasts, mythical figures and other worldly creatures, caricatures, and originals. His incorporation of a variety of forms of expression contributes to the dissolution of expectations around gender, class, time, and place. All of the elements used to adorn the subject are the detritus of the modern world which create beautiful, expressive photographs that ask thoughtful questions about how we define ourselves in a sea of images and excess.

Lyle XOX has been featured in numerous international publications, including ArtNet, Vogue Italia, Surface, V, New York Times, L’Officiel, DAZED, Montecristo, and many others. In 2019, he released a book, published by Rizzoli in New York, titled Lyle XOX: Head of Design. He has given artist talks in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, Taiwan, and Amsterdam. In addition, Lyle XOX collaborated with renowned musician and performer FKA Twigs, created a campaign for the prestigious South Korean eyewear brand, Gentle Monster, and completed commissions for luxury brands Comme Des Garçons and Maison Margiela. Lyle is represented by Gallery Jones in Vancouver.
