Shoora Majedian is a Vancouver-based artist originally from Tehran, Iran. In her works, Shoora examines “personal and social memories influenced by her childhood in Iran and her experiences pre- and post- migration.” She completed a Master of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2021. The title of this piece, Two Suns in Veils, speaks to two women on the left side of the composition. They are dressed in burkas, a requirement of women in Iran. Meanwhile, the man in the foreground of the image glides through the water with no shirt on, unencumbered by the swathes of fabric that envelop the two women behind him. This piece highlights the difference between the male and female experience in a country controlled by religious leaders. The title alludes to the idea that the women are like the sun—bright, warm, extremely powerful—and yet they are shrouded while others are permitted to roam confidently uncovered.
