F R O M T H E T H E AT R E

Welcome to Actors Theatre of Louisville! I am thrilled to be making my directorial debut at Actors Theatre with this hopeful and uplifting musical. This story of combating and overcoming oppression is profoundly resonant right now. We need the story of Once on This Island to remind us of the importance of hope and solidarity in a time when it's easy to be caught up in our differences. This production brings us together with WaterStep as our Transformative Community Partner. This Louisville organization serves communities around the world that lack clean water, and empowers them to solve their own long-term water needs. I’m delighted to be pairing with a nonprofit that does such essential work. If you would like to lend your own support, we’ll be collecting shoes throughout January and February. By donating your new and gently used shoes to WaterStep, you’ll help fund safe drinking water projects all over the world. The proceeds from selling these shoes help bring clean water to those in need. I encourage you to bring a pair to donate next time you’re at the theatre. We hope that you’ll return on February 7 to join us for our annual Community Conversation. Using the production as a springboard, this evening brings community members together across generations to discuss issues facing our region. Mark Hogg, Founder and CEO of WaterStep, Denise Sears, President and CEO of Supplies Over Seas, and Olivia Allen, Founder of I Can Be, will join me for this conversation. I look forward to seeing you there. Beginning in March, the Humana Festival of New American Plays brings the future of American theatre straight to Louisville and to you. We are proud that Actors Theatre is an internationally acclaimed launchpad for groundbreaking new plays and extraordinary talent, and I hope you’re just as excited as we are to experience this fantastic lineup of shows and special events. Thank you again for joining us, and enjoy the show!

An Enchanting Musical Fairy Tale

Director and choreographer Robert Barry Fleming and the cast of Once on This Island in rehearsal for the show at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.

As the process began for this co-production with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati-based writer Erica Reid spoke with director and choreographer Robert Barry Fleming to take us behind the scenes of the epic musical Once on This Island. Erica Reid: The heart of Once on This Island is its uplifting and joyous score, which took home both a Tony and an Olivier Award. What excites you about sharing this musical adventure with audiences? Robert Barry Fleming: It is all about sharing a vision of hope, possibility and solidarity in a moment that feels rife with cynicism, adversity and division. Lynn

Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s beautiful, revelatory, Caribbean-infused score undergirds this life-affirming musical based on Rosa Guy’s stark yet beautiful novel, My Love, My Love: or The Peasant Girl. That contrast itself celebrates the power of storytelling and reflects on “why we tell the story.” ER: The Hollywood Reporter has called Once on This Island “an enchanting musical fairy tale.” Which elements of this fairy tale will feel familiar? What sets this story apart from tales we’ve heard before? RBF: It’s a fairy tale but substantive, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” as one of its

sources. So there is a spiritual dimension, which accompanies any classic that has stood the test of time. But it’s rooted in a cultural milieu that is distinct and existentially loaded. One that is about our collective oppression, liberation and transformation. So, Once on This Island is a tale with great profundity, working on those witnessing it on many levels. ER: Once on This Island is set in the French Antilles, a group of tropical islands in the Caribbean. What kind of creative opportunities does this colorful setting open up for you and your team? How can audiences expect to see this island come to life on stage? RBF: The complex history and politics of this region of the world are deeply informed by the legacy of colonial resistance. I believe that has made recovery efforts from repeated natural disasters—from earthquakes to 12

hurricanes—difficult to impossible. Yet the people endure and thrive. So, all the textures of that history, beauty and resilience manifest in the physical environment of our production in a truly powerful, elegant and nuanced way. ER: When Ti Moune prays to the gods of the island...they answer! Ti Moune catches the attention of the powerful gods of water, love, earth and death. What do you look for when you’re casting gods and goddesses? RBF: Artists who have charisma and power of presence that would evoke the essence of a major deity that could govern the forces of nature and human society. And we found them! These artists are absolute creative forces of nature. Originally published by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Arranged for Actors Theatre of Louisville by Hannah Rae Montgomery

LOUISVILLE L ANDMARK

DISCOVER THE PAST IN THE PRESENT AT LOUISVILLE’S LOCUST GROVE

Locust Grove

Locust Grove is where Louisville begins—where curiosity is welcome, and every day is a day for exploration. Built in 1792, this National Historic Landmark and historic house museum has welcomed artists, presidents, adventurers, and pioneers of early Kentucky, and was the final home of General George Rogers Clark, hero of the American Revolution and founder of the city of Louisville. This house was here at the beginning—the beginning of Louisville, of Kentucky, and the United States. Built in 1792 by William Croghan, an Irish immigrant and veteran of the American Revolution, Locust Grove was home to four generations of Louisville families and over 70 enslaved individuals. Croghan operated Locust Grove as a farm and was

also involved in surveying the area before and after Kentucky became the fifteenth state. Open for tours from February through December, Locust Grove is the perfect spot to explore the early nineteenth century through the daily lives of the people who lived and worked there and hear the stories of all who contributed to the history of the site. From the eight Croghan children born and raised in the house, to the enslaved individuals who built the house and farmed the land, there are many contributions to the rich history of the grounds. Locust Grove is also the only site still standing west of the Appalachian Mountains where Lewis and Clark visited together. During the daily tours, visitors will explore the A U D I E N C E

restored historic house and hear about the people who frequented its parlors, as well as venture out into the outbuildings and grounds to learn about the lives and stories of the enslaved community. This small farm distillery demonstrates the intersection between agriculture and alcohol at special events throughout the year, taking guests through the step by step process of turning grain, fruit, and water into spirits using 19th century methods. Annual events such as Gardeners’ Fair in May, a Free Fourth of July celebration, and the 18th Century Market Fair in October allow guests to immerse themselves in the stories of the past and be surrounded by the natural beauty of 55 acres of gardens and grounds. The site is celebrating its third century as part of Louisville’s great story. Come learn something old every day at Locust Grove and discover the present in the past. Historic Locust Grove is a 55- acre 18th century historic site located at 561 Blankenbaker Lane. For more information, visit LocustGrove.org or call 502-897-9845. 35

Actors Theatre of Louisville was founded in 1964 by Richard Block in association with Ewel Cornett. Jon Jory was Producing Director from 1969 to 2000. Alexander Speer was Executive Director from 1965 to 2006. ARTISTS UNDER COMMISSION In addition to reading script submissions from around the country, Actors Theatre of Louisville builds relationships with playwrights and encourages the creation of new work by commissioning plays from artists whom we admire. A new play commission engages a writer to pen a piece specifically for Actors Theatre of Louisville and allows us to support the work’s development from the earliest stages of inspiration onward. Some notable past full-length plays commissioned by Actors Theatre and produced in the Humana Festival of New American Plays include The Christians and The Thin Place by Lucas Hnath, Cry it Out by Molly Smith Metzler, For Peter Pan on her 70th birthday by Sarah Ruhl, Becky Shaw by Gina Gionfriddo, Maple and Vine by Jordan Harrison (co-commission with Berkeley Repertory Theatre), Big Love and The Glory of the World by Charles Mee, and Dinner with Friends by Donald Margulies (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama). COMMISSIONED WRITERS CURRENTLY INCLUDE: Jeff Augustin, Vivian Barnes, Lisa Sanaye Dring, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Idris Goodwin, Sarah Gubbins, Jane B. Jones, Rajiv Joseph & Bill Sherman, Jonathan Norton, Gab Reisman, and Alexis Scheer

For the love of the Bluegrass. Through March 1. Learn the story of the horse through art— stories like the world record race of rider Frances Dodge and Greyhound, the greatest trotter of all time. Together, they set a world record in 1940 at the Red Mile in Lexington. Frances had never ridden Greyhound before that day.
