WELCOME TO KENTUCKY PERFORMING ARTS “And they’re off!” This time of year, that phrase has special meaning in our little corner of the world. May means Derby Time! The annual celebration that puts Louisville, and Kentucky, in the international spotlight. After a challenging couple of years, we are excited to see the Derby back to its full glory, and all of the community celebrations surrounding this event. The Derby Season also means summertime is right around the corner and this summer we are coming out of the gate strong with a number of major events both on and off of our stages. This month, your Louisville Orchestra wraps an amazing and innovative season with Fantastique, featuring rising young composer, and Louisville native, KiMani Bridges, along with the world premiere Adam Schoenberg’s Automation — a double concerto for cello and pre-recorded cello, coupled with electronics and orchestra. In June, we will welcome the cultural phenomenon Hamilton back to The Kentucky Center’s Whitney Hall. And throughout the summer we have a robust lineup of performances including Valerie June at Old Forester’s Paristown Hall, The Mavericks at the Brown Theatre, and family favorite PAW Patrol at The Kentucky Center, just to name a few. To view the full calendar, visit our website KentuckyPerformingArts.org. Summer is also time for our award-winning Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA), of which I am a proud alumna. GSA brings together Kentucky’s finest young artists for three weeks of instruction in an arts intensive environment, with cross-discipline learning, special guest artist performances and lectures, and the opportunity to access critical life-changing college scholarships. This is a very special year for GSA as we not only celebrate GSA’s 35th Anniversary, we also double GSA’s class size! Thanks to supplemental funding, we are able to grow from 256 students to 512, with the summer program taking place over two consecutive three week sessions at the University of Kentucky. We are thrilled to provide more young Kentucky artists the opportunity to experience this transformative program. To learn more about GSA, including ways you can help support, please visit KentuckyGSA.org. I thank you for joining us this evening. It is through your continued support we are able to sustain our mission to bring artistic inspiration and education to the Commonwealth and region. The bets are in and the gates are open, and “we’re off” to another great spring and summer season! Enjoy the show.

91.9 WFPK presents

RODNEY CROWELL Sunday, May 15, 2022 | 7:00PM | The Kentucky Center-Bomhard Theater

A U D I E N C E

With more than 40 years of American roots music under his belt, Texas native Rodney Crowell is a two-time Grammy Award winner who has written 15 No. 1 hits, with five No. 1 hits of his own and a legacy of songwriting excellence, which has made him an icon among giants. With strong roots in country music, Crowell has written chart-topping hits for the likes of Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Keith Urban and more. But owing to the distinctly universal, literary quality of his writing, has also penned beloved songs for artists as diverse as Bob Seger, Etta James, the Grateful Dead, John Denver, Jimmy Buffett and countless others. A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Crowell is also the author of the acclaimed memoir, “ Chinaberry Sidewalks,” and teamed up with

New York Times best-selling author Mary Karr for "Kin: Songs by Mary Karr & Rodney Crowell” in 2012, with Karr saying of her collaborator, “Like Hank Williams or Townes Van Zandt or Miss Lucinda, "he writes and croons with a poet’s economy and a well digger’s deep heart.” Crowell was honored with ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award in 2017, and that same year released the album Close Ties, which spawned another Grammy nomination for “It Ain’t Over Yet” with Rosanne Cash and John Paul White in the category of Best Americana Song. In 2018, he opened his own record label, RC1 Records, and released Acoustic Classics in 2018 and TEXAS in 2019. Also in 2019, Crowell received the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award. His latest album, Triage, was released last July to much critical acclaim.

Republic Bank Foundation Speaker Series DIVING DEEP: CHRIS FISCHER’S JOURNEY TO SAVE SHARKS AND BRING BALANCE TO OUR OCEANS The Kentucky Center-Bomhard Theater 5:30 p.m. Reception | 6:30 p.m. Program

8

A U D I E N C E

Kentucky to the World is excited to welcome Chris Fischer, OCEARCH Founder and Expedition Leader, home to Louisville for an exclusive live program on Monday, May 16, 2022, at the Kentucky Center Bomhard Theater. As an explorer and disrupter, Chris Fischer grew up chasing fish and frogs around Kentucky. Across his life and work, Chris discovered his gift of seeing the “big picture,” creating solutions around that picture, and communicating those solutions in an accessible way to others. Through his passion for water and sea life, Chris created his collaborative vision for OCEARCH and began connecting expert fishermen with scientists around the endangerment of great white sharks. Sharks are the balance keepers of the ocean’s food chain and without them at the top, all other fish face the possibility of disappearing for generations to come. Since founding OCEARCH in 2007, Chris and his team have led 42 global expeditions aboard the M/V OCEARCH. During these expeditions, Chris and his team were able to collect previously unattainable research on our ocean’s giants such as their migrations, reproductive cycle, genetic status, diet, abundance, and more. Chris’ data-centric approach completely disrupts the research by making data collection and distribution collaborative, inclusive, and open sourced. This approach has inspired global ocean environmental protection policies with Chris working alongside presidents of several countries, including the U.S. In the spirit of including a global audience in his work, the OCEARCH TRACKER was launched in 2013, allowing nearly 3 million annual users to learn about sharks while tracking them across the planet in near-real-time.

A graduate of Indiana University, Chris began his career as an explorer as host of the four-time Emmy Award-winning “Offshore Adventures” from 2001 to 2009 before founding OCEARCH. For his work, Chris has received numerous prestigious recognitions, including The Explorers Club Lowell Thomas Medal for Imagination in Exploration and the Nominee Trust 100 Award for the top social innovators list. Peter Schikler

Join us for this live event where you’ll hear from Chris in conversation with our special guest host and fellow Kentuckian Peter Schikler. They will discuss Chris' global adventures alongside his crew as they dive in to find the solutions that will ensure a sea full of fish and fish sandwiches for many generations. Born and raised in Louisville, KY, our guest host Peter Schikler received his B.A. in Biology and Anthropology from Indiana University and an M.A. in Conservation Biology from Columbia University prior to obtaining his J.D. from New York Law School. Peter resides in Brooklyn, NY and serves as senior counsel in the New York City Law Department’s Environmental Law Division where he represents New York City and its agencies on a range of environmental matters, including sustainability and resilience issues as well as compliance with environmental review and land use regulations.

SHAPING KENTUCKY’S NARRATIVE Throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic, Kentuckians across our state continued to overcome challenges in the face of economic uncertainty. To showcase these stories of resilience, we launched our year-long initiative in summer 2021, “Kentucky: Resilience in the Face of Economic Change” to inspire people across the globe to see what’s possible. We’ve collaborated with Kentuckians such as MIT Comparative Media Studies Researcher and AccelerateKY Executive Director Sam Ford to share stories of resilience about Kentucky’s economic future. Sam said it best about the purpose of our resilience initiative. “From Paducah to Pikeville, Kentucky is filled with inspiring stories of innovation

We are excited to announce that the first installment of our newest multimedia storytelling series, "Kentucky: Resilience in the Face of Economic Change" is now available for digital streaming on Kentucky Educational Television's (KET) website. This film highlights stories of innovation in a state where core 20th-century economic drivers like coal mining, tobacco farming, traditional manufacturing, and transportation have faced significant disruption in the first two decades of the 21st century. It features our Resilience Initiative's kickoff event in August 2021 where a panel of thought leaders shared personal stories focused on the realities of Kentucky’s evolving economy and discussed how to move forward to achieve innovative economic and workforce development in the Commonwealth.

and resilience. In our communities, we know we need to invest in economic development, workforce development, and community development. But investing in narrative development is the vital fourth leg of the table.” − Sam Ford.

who are shaping our world through their creativity, intellect, and passion. In honor of Kentucky to the World’s 10th anniversary, we have plans to seize opportunities and create new programs to reach large audiences across our Bluegrass State and beyond. Our plans include growing the Republic Bank Foundation Speaker Series, creating a celebration in honor of the roots of Kentucky music, funding and producing a feature length documentary as the culmination of our year long Resilience project, expanding the use of our Illustrated Playing Cards by economic development and other initiatives, launching our satellite space at Western Kentucky University’s Innovation Campus, and so much more.

We’re also hosting a series of raffles and events, featuring curated collections of rare bourbon bottles from some of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail’s newest additions. The rare bottles have been generously donated by distilleries and collectors across the state. Visit our website at kentuckytotheworld.org to learn more about all of our projects and programs in 2022.

WHAT IS KENTUCKY TO THE WORLD? A Louisville-based nonprofit, Kentucky to the World elevates the cultural and intellectual reputation of our Commonwealth on the global stage. CODE

SANFORD BIGGERS

Codeswitch is the first survey of quilt-based works— inspired, in part, by the rich creative legacies of African American quilters—produced by the American interdisciplinary artist Sanford Biggers. The works, part of Biggers’s Codex series, consist of mixed-media paintings and sculptures done directly on or made from antique American quilts. Members see it all for free! Advanced ticket purchase strongly encouraged. Visit speedmuseum.org

Sanford Biggers: Codeswitch was co-organized by Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art & Thought, New Orleans, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York, and curated by Andrea Andersson (Founding Director and Chief Curator, Rivers Institute) and Sergio Bessa (former Director of Curatorial Programs, Bronx Museum).
