FROM THE THEATRE How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in’t! – The Tempest

It feels amazing to be able to say this... Welcome to the 61st season of your Kentucky Shakespeare Festival! To those who’ve been here before – welcome home. And to those joining us for the first time – you are welcome here! Oh, how we’ve missed you and this experience after such a long road. We honor those who’ve come before us to grow Doug Ramey’s vision into what it is today – the many board members, leaders, staff members, artists, donors, volunteers, students, and audience members on whose shoulders we stand 60+ years later. As excited as we are to create and share this again, we must acknowledge the loss of the past year and the two plagues in society we continue to fight, COVID-19 and social injustice. Our hearts also go out to the many people impacted by both, who’ve lost loved ones, employment, stability, and we continue to commit to the work of anti-racism and stand against hate and injustice. Matt Wallace

There are many now no longer with us as we attempt to heal and connect. We dedicate this season, our return to Central Park, to the memory of two of our dear family members and Festival creative team, Barb Cullen and Paul Owen. Paul designed our 1990 stage house and returned as scenic designer through our 2018 season. Our dear Barb was our choreographer, responsible for those spirited dances, jigs, in the park since 2015. These exceptional human beings had in common incredible talent and generous spirits, as talented as they were kind. And it’s a loss not just for us, but for the community, with both having prolific careers in the theatre, impacting so many. We are incredibly grateful for our time with them and will do our very best to honor their memory through our work. At the top of the amphitheater in the center, you’ll see six new Olmsted Central Park Benches, we’re calling them “Decades Benches,” commemorating the six decades of the Festival. There is a bench for each of them, right next each other.

This is not Netflix, Hulu, or Zoom. We are not streaming or virtual. Welcome back to live, in-person theatre. Here, we are again connected to each other, and anything can happen. We’re able to provide this professional public service because of many generous donors. When those of you who can afford to donate at intermission, you’re helping to sustain and grow your Kentucky Shakespeare, allowing us to make future dreams realities. In this special homecoming summer take a breath, look around, and think about your Kentucky Shakespeare memories. We have so many more magical ones to create together, and we thank you for being part of our return. Welcome home. Enjoy your evening under the stars!

Shakespeare in Shakespeare in Love Listen for some of this iconic Shakespearean text found throughout Shakespeare in Love! “What light is light, if Silvia be not seen?” – The Two Gentlemen of Verona “Out, damn Spot!” – Macbeth “Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.” – Romeo and Juliet “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.” – Macbeth “Tell me how you love her.” – As You Like It

SONNET 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed, And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed: But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st, Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st, So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

“I will drag her out myself.” – The Taming of the Shrew “Dreams are the children of an idle brain, begot of nothing but vain fantasy which is as thin of substance as the air.” – Romeo and Juliet “O brave new world!” – The Tempest “I’ll wager my fortune.” – The Taming of the Shrew “The play’s the thing!” – Hamlet “I will do such things,-What they are, yet I know not.” – King Lear

O MISTRESS MINE TWELFTH NIGHT O Mistress mine where are you roaming? O stay and hear, your true love’s coming, That can sing both high and low. Trip no further pretty sweeting. Journeys end in lovers’ meeting, Every wise man’s son doth know. What is love, ‘tis not hereafter, Present mirth, hath present laughter: What’s to come, is still unsure. In delay there lies no plenty, Then come kiss me sweet and twenty: Youth’s a stuff will not endure.

“Lend me your ears!” – Julius Caesar “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright.” – Romeo and Juliet “O, you are sick of self love.” – Twelfth Night “Angels and ministers of grace defend us.” – Hamlet

LOOKING FOR LOVE IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES An Essay by Jonathan Smith, Professor Emeritus, Hanover College There is an old story—almost certainly apocryphal—that Queen Elizabeth I, having mourned the passing of Falstaff early on in Henry V, asked Shakespeare to write another play, about “Falstaff in love”; and hence, Merry Wives of Windsor. But a play about Falstaff in “love,” Shakespeare knew too well, is a contradiction in terms. Is “Shakespeare in Love” as paradoxical a phrase as “Falstaff in love”? Surely not, for someone who wrote (in sonnets and plays) so wisely about love. But the challenge of the phrase in this case is that the facts of the historical Shakespeare in love are just stubbornly uninteresting. In spite of an exciting and well-connected career in the London

theatre milieu, he returned home regularly to his wife and family, for whom he bought a splendid Stratford mansion as soon as he could afford it, died in the bosom of his family, and is buried in great honor next to his wife and daughter. But we know almost nothing about the sparks that animated that marriage, so for the purposes of Shakespeare in Love, Anne Hathaway Shakespeare must be set aside very quickly (“She had a cottage”) so we can imagine the sort of woman who would stir the love of Shakespeare: unsurprisingly, someone very like Viola in Twelfth Night or Rosalind in As You Like It, who shares his love of language, is at home play-acting in any gender, and fights courageously

“And from this loving marriage—not from Henry V— came all subsequent English monarchs from Henry VII on, including Elizabeth I, fan of Falstaff, and Elizabeth II, who reigns today.” for natural love and empowered women in a structured patriarchal world. And then, of course, she must disappear at the end, lest history be changed! And speaking of history, when Shakespeare culminated his great decade of English history-writing with Henry V, he apparently decided that this history series should end, like his comedies, with marriage. So the final scene of the play presents us with “Henry in love,” which for Shakespeare, characteristically, seems more like Much Ado About Nothing’s Beatrice and Benedick, with a language barrier thrown in. “Is it possible dat I should love de enemi of France?,” asks Catherine, and history suggests the question is an apt one. She did marry Henry and bear him a son (the ill-fated Henry VI), but with the vicissitudes of Henry’s ongoing campaigns in France and his early death, they spent no more than a few months together. And then she scandalized the royal court by falling in love with an obscure Welshman named Tudor—and presumably this really was love, since she had nothing but scorn to gain by it. And from this loving marriage—not from Henry V—came all subsequent English monarchs from Henry VII on, including Elizabeth I, fan of Falstaff, and Elizabeth II, who reigns today. 12

directed by Amy Attaway HENRY V – THE PLOT Soon after inheriting the throne of England, Henry V is considering the strength of a claim to the throne of France as well. But it’s when the Dauphin of France sends Henry an insulting message that he makes up his mind and decides to invade. Even the king’s former companions from his tavern days, while mourning the death of Sir John Falstaff, set out to join Henry’s army. The French royal family rejects Henry’s claim to the crown, so Henry attacks, taking the town of Harfleur. The English soldiers are in poor condition after this, thanks to sickness and foul weather, and begin to retreat, but Henry rejects the French Herald’s offer of ransom and the two armies prepare to fight at Agincourt. The evening before the battle, Henry tours the camp in disguise, finding out what his men think, which leads him to consider the heavy responsibilities of kingship and lingering questions about how his father took the throne. Meanwhile, French confidence is high. The battle begins: Henry rallies his troops and places them all in God’s hands... A U D I E N C E

(Our late-night 10:30PM production of the Louisville Improvisors LATE NIGHT SHAKES is intended for mature audiences only.) If we were rating the productions, they would be PG. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is a fanciful and fictional imagining of Shakespeare’s life. Although sexuality and attraction remain integral themes in the play, our production will not contain nudity or the level of sexuality that the film had. Through special permission from Concord Theatricals, we have been permitted to remove curse words from the production, making the script similar to the version of the script made available for high school productions. As in Shakespeare, the play does include innuendo and sometimes bawdy humor.
