WELCOME TO KENTUCKY PERFORMING ARTS

Welcome to the 2022/2023 Kentucky Performing Arts Presents Season!

It is wonderful to be together again, celebrating the arts with you. We hope you had a fun and relaxing summer. Kentucky Performing Arts certainly had a busy summer season, with two big moments in the history of this organization.

In June and July, the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts not only celebrated its 35th anniversary, but we doubled the class size! For the first time in GSA’s history, we were able to hold two three-week sessions. More than 500 students from all over Kentucky gathered at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where GSA’s faculty of professional teaching artists guided them through incredibly intense (and incredibly fun) arts instruction. Opening opportunities for scholarships to nearly 30 college and universities, and helping shape the next generation of Kentucky’s artistic leadership.

In August, we had a first for The Kentucky Center, as the touring production of the Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill was built and debuted on the Whitney Hall stage! Cast and crew lived as Kentuckians for nearly a month working tirelessly to create this remarkable show. The two-night debut at The Kentucky Center took us on an impactful, emotional journey that saw standing ovations throughout the performances.

Now, we are excited to bring you a season full of surprises, big names, diverse artists and diverse artforms. Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation will be perfect for a family night out, the iconic booms and bangs of STOMP will once again roar into Louisville, and Dorrance Dance will tap into Old Forester’s Paristown Hall.

Kentucky Performing Arts is honored to once again welcome the Brown-Forman Midnite Ramble Series to our stages, with Step Afrika! and Collage Dance Collective. Our newest venue, Old Forester’s Paristown Hall, continues to attract a broad range of exciting artists and shows, including indie rockers Hippo Campus, IMPACT professional wrestling, guitar legend Steve Vai, K-pop group OMEGA X, Louisville Orchestra performances, and more. To view the full calendar of events, please visit our website KentuckyPerformingArts.org

We thank you for joining us this evening and look forward to seeing again as we experience a powerful and entertaining season together.

GUEST

SYLVESTER

Join Kelly Ripa and special guest Justin Sylvester for the release of her new book, LIVE WIRE!

Entrepreneur, host, actress and producer, Kelly Ripa, is one of the most powerful voices in media. A beloved household name for nearly two decades, Ripa has a wide-ranging career both on and off camera, getting her start on All My Children and spanning over thirty years at ABC. Read all about her love story

with Mark, the sexism she faced in the industry, her Jersey pride, and more than a few embarrassing incidents that prove even being on screen five days a week doesn’t protect you from self-induced humiliation.

Surprising, at times savage, a little shameless and always humorous, LIVE WIRE shows Kelly as she really is offscreen — a very wise woman who has something to say.

Anjelah Johnson-Reyes was born and raised in San Jose, California and is of Mexican and Native American descent. She is one of five children and has a large extended family to which she remains close. In the beginning of her career, Johnson-Reyes was a professional cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders.

As an Oakland Raiderette, she was named Rookie of the Year and even performed in Super Bowl XXXVII. After that year she decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of acting.

She became an internet sensation with her viral video, “Nail Salon” which led to many stand up, television and film opportunities. That same year she joined the cast of, MADtv as a series regular, which spawned another internet sensation, “Bon Qui Qui.” This original character, a disgruntled fast food employee with no filter, has been enjoyed, viewed and replicated by over 65 million people worldwide. After recording and releasing three songs and two music videos as Bon Qui Qui, Anjelah signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records to release a full album titled, Gold Plated Dreams, which she’s toured twice selling out both times. Bon Qui Qui teamed up with Benefit Cosmetics for her third music video “This Is How We Do It”. After the success of her debut album, Bon Qui Qui released a Christmas EP titled Merry Hoodmas. All the songs are available on iTunes and the videos are currently on YouTube.

Anjelah has appeared in multiple ads and commercials including campaigns for Sprint, Visa, Snickers, Verizon, AllState, K-Swiss, Dryers Ice Cream and was the spokesperson for a Texas based restaurant chain, Taco Cabana. Anjelah has also guest starred on shows such as The Shield, Ugly Betty, Curb Your

Enthusiasm, and others all while touring with her stand up comedy.

In June 2009 Anjelah recorded her first one-hour special for Comedy Central and Warner Bros. Records titled, That’s How We Do It. Her second one-hour special, The Homecoming Show, aired on NUVOtv in July of 2013 and is currently available on Netflix. In 2014 Anjelah recorded her third hour special, Not Fancy which is a Netflix original, and is currently available for streaming. In 2017 she filmed her fourth hour special Mahalo & Goodnight in Honolulu, Hawaii. It premiered on the Epix channel and is now available for steaming on Hulu.

Johnson has starred in such films as Our Family Wedding, Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Enough Said, The Resurrection Of Gavin Stone, and the film Mom’s Night Out, which not only features Anjelah but also her husband, musician Manwell Reyes of the musical duo Panda$.

Anjelah resides in Los Angeles with her husband and continues to act and tour the country with her sold out comedy shows.

THE STATE OF SONG: “MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME” FACES A CHANGING WORLD

Sunday, October 23, 2022 | The Kentucky Center-Bomhard Theater

Delicious Bites Reception 4 p.m. | Program 5 p.m.

Kentucky to the World proudly presents a unique family and student-friendly event on Sunday, Oct. 23, featuring a dynamic combination of live musical performances, audience engagement and conversation with Harry Pickens, Hannah Drake, Ben Sollee, and Emily Bingham as part of the Republic Bank Foundation Speaker Series.

A reception with some delicious bites will kick off the event at 4 p.m. in the North Lobby for all attendees followed by the live program at 5 p.m. in the Kentucky Center’s Bomhard Theater.

This conversation will examine the role of “My Old Kentucky Home” as the song that represents our state, and thus ourselves, from its problematic roots to its modern disconnect.

This program seeks to begin the conversation about how KTW can work together towards rewriting Kentucky's song to the world by combining musical interactions with lively on-stage conversation and audience participation.

KTW CELEBRATES ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY

For a decade, Kentucky to the World's mission has been to elevate the cultural and intellectual reputation of our Commonwealth on the global stage. This is accomplished by sharing compelling stories of extraordinary people with Kentucky roots who are shaping the world with their creativity, intellect, and passion through live events, television specials, digital content, collectibles, school programs and other initiatives.

THE FUTURE OF KTW IN BOWLING GREEN

In 2022 KTW was recruited as one of the exclusive tenants in Western Kentucky University’s (WKU) Innovation Campus Collaborative SmartSpace. KTW will be in the company of the MIT Documentary Lab and The USC Civic Imagination Project with more to come. This new satellite space gives us the unique opportunity to work with more collaborators to reach broader audiences as well as showcase the vibrance of Bowling Green’s community, economy, and workforce.

The KTW and WKU in-kind partnership will offer more Kentuckians an opportunity to tell their stories through the KTW podcast booth. It will inspire other budding entrepreneurs with video content from interviews with successful Kentuckians airing throughout the innovation space. The goal is to inspire talented people to come from beyond our borders to find their futures in Bowling Green and in the rest of the state.

A U D I E N C E 11

“Kentucky to the World began in Louisville,'' said Shelly Zegart, KTW President and CEO, “and this new WKU partnership will give us access to a broader audience, new collaborators, and a footprint in a new part of the Commonwealth.”

WKU has redesigned the 30,000 square foot Innovation Campus (located at 2413 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY) to be a collaborative smart space for entrepreneurs throughout the state. The space offers fiber internet access and the ability to collaborate with other business owners in dynamic meeting spaces. The WKU CREATE (Central Region Ecosystem for Arts, Technology, and Entrepreneurship) is one of six innovation hubs throughout the state of Kentucky, similar to Louisville’s Amplify. In addition to the public-facing CREATE, the

Central Region and Innovation Commercialization Center will house university labs, a research foundation and companies’ headquarters.

“When I first heard about Kentucky to the World’s mission I knew it was an organization that we wanted to have involved in our Innovation Center,” said Sam Ford, Executive Director of AccelerateKY and fellow of CREATE.

“Talent is the most essential ingredient in our economic development of Kentucky. If we have talent who want to be here, that can’t be replicated. Sharing KTW’s success stories of living Kentuckians who have made it big is just further proof that it is possible to thrive here.”

BACKGROUND

KTW is unique in its singular focus on Kentucky ‘s intellectual and cultural

Preceding each live event KTW creates a specially designed program for more than 100 local high school students featuring an intimate briefing with our presenters, generously supported by The Bass Family Foundation.

If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase and a long list of

accomplishments including 2 RIAA Gold

Certified albums, over 1.5 million concert tickets sold, over 1 billion streams on Pandora, and over 2 million albums sold worldwide. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense... and with a sense of humor.

BUCKINGHAM

Lindsey Buckingham is one of the most inventive and electrifying musicians of his generation. His instinct for melody and his singular fingerpicking guitar style

Lindsey Buckingham, his first solo release since 2011’s Seeds We Sow. Entertainment Weekly called the new album "a California pop-rock meditation that draws on his Golden State roots and probes what Buckingham knows best: the intricacies of relationships” and named it one of the year’s 10 best, while Newsweek hailed it for featuring "all the recognizable elements of his sound: melodic hooks, intricate production, multilayered vocals, and shimmering guitar." Buckingham debuted the new material on a 2021 North American tour, during which Glide praised his live guitar playing as “captivating and flawless.”

Over the last four decades, Buckingham has developed a radical sense of experimentation and an unrivaled savvy

as a producer, skills he first honed as a singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer, and the musical visionary of Fleetwood Mac, where he wrote and produced several Top Ten hits, including “Go Your Own Way” and “Big Love.” Under Buckingham’s direction, Fleetwood Mac became one of the best-selling and most beloved rock groups of all time. As a solo artist, Buckingham often plays nearly every instrument himself; his complex arrangements and inventive production choices make his solo work thrilling to experience. In 2020, he appeared on The Killers’ single “Caution” and last year joined Halsey to perform her single ‘’Darling’’ on Saturday Night Live. He remains a highly sought-after collaborator, a maverick, and a visionary.
