AND THEY’RE OFF! “And they’re off!” This time of year, that phrase has special meaning in our little corner of the world. May means Derby Time! The annual celebration that puts Louisville, and Kentucky, in the international spotlight. It also means summertime is right around the corner, and this summer we are coming out of the gate strong with a number of major events both on and off our stages. In June, we welcome the cultural phenomenon Hamilton to Louisville for the first time. We nearly sold out all three weeks’ worth of performances in one day! As if that’s not enough, this summer we will open the doors to the latest member of our family of venues, Old Forester’s Paristown Hall. This 2,000-person standing room venue in Louisville’s historic Paristown Pointe neighborhood will create a new entertainment destination for national touring bands, as well as a home for collaborative projects, new works and nontraditional performance experiences by the region’s arts and cultural community. Of course, as I am always reminding people, what happens on our stages is only a part of what The Kentucky Center does and with summer almost here, we are gearing up for a pair of programs that will find us traveling all across the Commonwealth. In partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education, The Kentucky Center will present Arts Academies in June and July throughout the Commonwealth. This year the Academies will focus on Arts Assessment & Technology, with partner and host KET in Lexington, and Arts & Literacy Integration in multiple locations. The Academies will serve hundreds of teachers from Kentucky public schools. Summer is also time for our award-winning Governor’s School for the Arts, of which I am a proud alumna. GSA and its faculty of professional teaching artists guides more than 250 of Kentucky’s finest young artists through three weeks of incredibly intense (and incredibly fun) arts instruction. This year, we celebrate a new partnership as the summer program is held on the University of Kentucky campus for the first time. Of course, GSA creates opportunities far beyond arts instruction. Eighteen colleges and universities welcome GSA alums with scholarships, just for having completed the program. I thank you for joining us this evening. It is through your continued support we are able to sustain our mission to bring artistic inspiration and education to the Commonwealth and region. The bets are in and the gates are open, and “we’re off” to another great spring and summer season! Enjoy the show. Kim Baker, President and CEO, The Kentucky Center 4

Preacher Lawson Thursday, May 9, 2019 • 8 p.m. • Bomhard Theater
P
reacher Lawson was born In Portland, Oregon, but spent most of his adolescence in Memphis, Tennessee. He moved twenty times before the age of ten, but if you asked him what city he’s from he’d say Orlando, Florida, because that’s where he grew as a comedian. He started writing jokes when he was sixteen and decided to perform for the first time a year later on a bet with his mother. Best decision of his life. In 2015 Preacher won the title of “Funniest Comedian in Florida.” In 2016
he was crowned the winner of the Seattle International Comedy Competition. He has continued the wave of momentum on into 2017, and he’s on quite a roll this year so far, having made his television debut on NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly, followed by an appearance on Comedy Dynamic’s Coming To The Stage soon after. In 2017, Preacher made a big splash on NBC’s America’s Got Talent where he made it to the final 10 contestants. He was next seen on America’s Got Talent: The Champions, which premiered in January of this year.

Wu Fei was recently commissioned by Intersection Ensemble in Nashville to create new classical work for guzheng, voice and western chamber ensemble, which she titled If I Was a Batman Queen. Together as an entirely unique banjo- guzheng duo and bonded by their bi-cultural sisterhood, Abigail Washburn and Wu Fei sing and perform original compositions inspired by weaving together Appalachian and Chinese folk songs. Abigail & Wu Fei released their first duo record, produced by BĂŠla Fleck, in the fall of 2018. To support the mission behind their music, Washburn & Wu created an educational initiative called The Ripple Effect, which aims to bridge hearts and minds through crosscultural collaboration, starting with the U.S. and China, and the universal language of music.

The Kentucky Center presents
A/Tonal Saturday, May 18, 2019 • 8 p.m. • Clark-Todd Hall
A/Tonal was founded by two Louisville composers and two performers in 2013 who were deeply passionate about playing music of the past and present. Composers Daniel Gilliam and Erich Stem along with performers Carrie RavenStem and Jessica Dorman set out to create a group that would bring a lively mix of music presented in such a way as to give Louisville audiences an experience they will never forget. 14
The use of dynamic lighting on stage, audience members being encouraged to take pics or Facetime live, the exploration of venues outside of the traditional chamber group setting, and the commissioning and recording of music by living and local composers are some of the efforts that have distinguished A/Tonal as a group that is “breaking new ground” (Insider Louisville).
