LOUISVILLE JUNE 2024

SUMMER IN THE CITY

Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August.”
– Jenny Han, screenwriter and producer

School is out, and summer is upon us! While this time of year can’t compete with the festive energy of Derby or the holidays, there is still something pretty magical about the lazy, hazy days of summer.

While it might technically be the off season for many of Louisville’s performing arts groups, anyone who needs a live entertainment fix between now and September can still find plenty of exciting shows and concerts on the calendar.

Just check out our Event Outlook on page 6 if you don’t believe us.

From The Bard’s classics to folk singers to rock tribute bands to a roaring good time with the Louisville Orchestra, there is something for everyone. Speaking of LO, check out our spotlight of their annual concert at the zoo on page 10

One of the very best things about summer is the city’s Cultural Pass program, which opens up the world of art, culture and performance to our city’s youth. Find out how you can get your kids involved on page 16. If your interests lie more in history than culture, check out all the offerings of the Kentucky Historical Society on page 9

For pure family fun, we’re pleased to spotlight a returning street festival in the heart of St. Matthews later this month. Get all the deets on page 14.

We also encourage you to support our advertisers whenever you can. These wonderful companies not only support the arts, they also make it possible for Audience Magazine to bring you all the stories in each issue free of charge.

So, slather on your sunscreen and soak up some summer magic for as long as you can!

See you under the sun,

Amy & Doug

KENTUCKY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Frankfort, Kentucky

Renowned historian Dr. Thomas D. Clark wrote that Kentuckians “have established their place in history decade by decade, and incident by incident, always with the winds of change blowing strongly in their faces.” The Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in downtown Frankfort honors Clark’s accomplishments and is the crown jewel of the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS)’s properties.

The cornerstone exhibit at the center is “A Kentucky Journey,” with interactive components about key events in Kentucky’s history and fascinating artifacts, such as President Abraham Lincoln’s pocket watch and a cast of Daniel Boone’s skull. Additionally, the center features the Kentucky Hall of Governors, the Stewart Home & School 1792 Museum Store, special exhibits, and

a research library. Space is also available for rental for special events, such as wedding receptions and conferences.

KHS also oversees the Old State Capitol building in Frankfort. This National Historic Landmark building served as Kentucky’s seat of government from 1830-1910. Special tours of the building describe the politics and personalities of 19th- and early 20th-century Kentuckians, who debated issues such as slavery, the Civil War, women’s rights, and civil rights.

The Kentucky Military History Museum, which is jointly operated by KHS and the Kentucky Department for Military Affairs, houses the exhibits, Kentucky Military Treasures and George M. Chinn: Sights Set on Innovation, along with 19th-century war records. A Civil War-era munitions

factory and the state arsenal for more than 100 years, this building is a popular stop for schools and military history buffs. During the Civil War, the structure was captured by Confederate forces, and it was central in the Union defense of Frankfort against John Hunt Morgan’s final raid in 1864.

To keep up with all the events and exhibits going on at the Kentucky Historical Society, follow them on Facebook at @KentuckyHistoricalSociety and visit their website, history.ky.gov

The Kentucky Historical Society is an agency of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet. It is also an affiliate of the Smithsonian, has full accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, and is a founding member of the History Relevance Campaign.

PASSPORT TO CREATIVITY

2024 CULTURAL PASS & SUMMER READING

INITIATIVES
KICK OFF by Fund for the Arts

School’s out, and the 2024 Cultural Pass and library summer reading programs are here to prevent summer learning loss, provide fun, free arts and culture experiences, and inspire young people of all ages to take full advantage of their passport to creativity.

Cultural Pass programs are available in Jefferson, Bullitt, and Oldham counties in Kentucky and Clark, Floyd, and Harrison counties in Indiana.

"Louisville's vibrant arts and culture scene is a cornerstone of our community's identity, and the 2024 Cultural Pass represents our commitment to fostering creativity and inclusivity,” said Louisville Metro Mayor Craig Greenberg. “This initiative is continuing to grow in its 11th year and is a wonderful example of how collaboration between city agencies and community partners enriches the lives of Louisvillians and visitors alike.”

Louisville Deputy Mayor David James, along with representatives from partner organizations Fund for the Arts, Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) and Floyd County Library, announced details of this year’s Cultural Pass and summer reading program at a kick-off event on June 1 at the LFPL Main Branch that featured activities and performances throughout the day.

2024 CULTURAL PASS

The Cultural Pass is an admission-free program that supports and encourages summer learning by providing free access and programming to over 40 of Louisville and Southern Indiana’s arts and cultural institutions, including Kentucky Science Center, Harrison County Discovery Center, Louisville Zoo, The Little Loomhouse, Louisville Leopard Percussionists, The Falls of the Ohio State Park, Speed Art Museum, and so many more. The program runs until August 4, when the school year resumes.

“Our arts and culture sector has so much to offer our young people all year round, but especially during the summer,” said

Andre Kimo Stone Guess, President & CEO of Fund for the Arts. “We believe that everyone in our community is an artist, and we encourage everyone to explore their artistic identities! Free access and specialized programming makes those opportunities infinitely more accessible, and helps build healthier, happier communities for people of every age.”

This year, TARC will help connect Cultural Pass holders who need transportation assistance to access arts and cultural venues

 Thanks to the Cultural Pass program, kids of all ages are immersed in arts, music and learning opportunities they may not otherwise have access to.

17 FUND FOR THE ARTS

through a limited number of passes for those in need, good for riding TARC throughout the summer.

"Our priority at TARC is helping everyone in our community have access to the important places of their life," said TARC Board Chair Ted Smith. "It isn't just the everyday needs of necessity, but also having access to the many great arts and cultural institutions our city has to offer that makes a person's journey complete. I'm happy TARC is able to help make that possible this year."

Community members can register for a Cultural Pass at their local library. Participating libraries include all LFPL locations, The Floyd County Library, Bullitt County Public Library, Jeffersonville Township Public Library, and Charlestown Clark County Public Library. To register, you must be under age 21, a resident of one of the participating counties and have a library card. Visit culturalpass.org to learn more about how to register for or use Cultural Pass.

The 2024 Cultural Pass is presented by the Fund for the Arts, Louisville Metro Government, Arts & Culture Alliance (ACA), and the Louisville Free Public Library, and it is supported by Louisville Metro Government, the Caesar’s Foundation, The Gheens Foundation, PNC Bank, the Sam and Bonnie Rechter Family Foundation, Chase Bank, the Sociable Weaver Foundation, the Owsley Brown III Philanthropic Foundation, and Brooke Brown Barzun and Matthew Barzun.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Presented by the Library Foundation, LFPL’s annual summer reading program is a free 10-week program that encourages kids and teens to read for fun over the summer by offering prizes and incentives. Every child who completes the program will receive an LFPL backpack or small shoulder bag.

In addition, those who complete the program will receive passes to local attractions and sporting events, such as Kentucky Science Center, Squire Boone Caverns, Louisville Bats, Racing Louisville FC, and select UofL sports, as well as sweet treats from Fazoli’s, Ehrler’s, Raising Cane’s, and Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie Co.

To complete the program, school-aged children must read 10 books, teens read six books, and preschool-aged children and younger need to read, or have read to them, 20 books.

“Summer reading is a great out-of-school program that helps kids and teens stay on reading level and return to school better prepared to learn,” said LFPL Director Lee Burchfield.

“This annual tradition reaches nearly 50,000 children in the Metro area, helping to create a habit and love of reading.”

For more information or to register for summer reading, visit LFPL.org/SummerReading or call (502) 574-1611

William M. Duffy’s (b. 1953) solo exhibition is the second installment of the Louisville’s Black Avant-Garde series at the Speed Art Museum, highlighting local, historically significant Black visual artists active from 1950–1980. A lifelong artist, Duffy first began with painting, silk-screening, and drawing. He then taught himself how to carve and sculpt through research, improvisation, and repetition. This retrospective exhibition spans over four decades of creativity and presents not only the sculpture that Duffy is known for, but also his drawings, paintings, and digital art. In addition to featuring works of fine art, this retrospective will include commercial works commissioned by local community groups, and works made over the course of his long career as an educator in Jefferson County Public Schools – and done in collaboration with his students.
